Push for migraine centre By Tate Papworth A leading neurologist hopes to see the western suburbs become the nation’s capital for migraine research. Professor Tissa Wijeratne said that while migraines were incredibly common, little has been done to treat the debilitating disorder. “Australia is one of the most developed, luckiest countries in the world. Medicine in Australia is quite well advanced, however, Australia’s leading cause of disability at this point of time is migraine, which affects we believe just over six million Australians according to the latest global burden disease data,” he said.

“This cost the Australian economy close to $40 billion in 2018 alone. It continues to remain the least respected, worst managed, most unrecognised medical disorder in this country. It is very disappointing.” Professor Wijeratne said his long-term dream is to see a national centre of research of excellence established in the west to tackle the problem. “Australia is the only developed country with no national centre that is purely dedicated to the commonest medical disorder in the world that would drive research, which is quite sad,” he said. “We have some of the brightest and most brilliant young minds in the world. We need to

create platforms for these younger and brighter minds to work with older minds collaboratively. “I would love to see the establishment of a national, major research centre of excellence, hopefully to be physically located in the western side of Victoria. It will be a platform where the whole globe can come and spend some time.” While a national centre is still just a vision, Professor Wijeratne has established the National Migraine Foundation in Keilor East. Through his influence, Professor Wijeratne was able to have a World Brain Day, held annually on July 22, to centre around migraine. However his plans extend beyond the day. “I live in Melbourne and I chair this globally, so this is a unique opportunity for us to lift the

profile of this illness. Therefore we’re launching the first ever National Migraine Walk on July 21, the day before World Brain Day. “It’s a Sunday, there’s a football match on that day and I hope some of those fans can come and help us with this great cause to build a better Australia, with better brains and hopefully migraine fee.” The walk will take place from the Queen Victoria Gardens, opposite the Arts Centre to the State Library. Brimbank cockfighting charges By Tate Papworth RSPCA Victoria and Victoria Police have uncovered an alleged cockfighting operation in Brimbank. RSPCA Victoria inspectors seized from a Brimbank property birds they say appear to have been groomed for cockfighting. Ness said it was sad to see such barbaric activities still occurring. “While all those involved in this investigation were pleased with the outcome, it is a shocking reality that cockfighting continues in Victoria,” he said.

“We’re saddened to report that cockfighting is still happening in the community … we hope cases like this one will discourage people from participating in such a barbaric activity.” Cockfighting is illegal in Australia, as is possession of equipment designed for cockfighting. Keeping, using or assisting in the management of premises for the purpose of causing animals to fight can carry a two-year jail term and a maximum fine of $82,610. Possession of cockfighting implements such as spurs carries a maximum fine of $3304.

A quantity of drugs was also uncovered while inspectors executed the warrant. A 60-year-old Sunshine West man has been charged with trafficking and possessing a drug of dependence (methylamphetamine) and has been bailed to appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court on December 5. Syndenham star keeps on cooking Anushka Zargaryan’s MasterChef adventure may have come to an end last night, but her culinary journey is only just beginning. In an incredibly intense pressure test, the Sydenham local went up against Nicole and Tim for a spot in the final five. The three attempted to reproduce world renowned chef Ashley Palmer-Watts interpretation of a lamington. Anushka’s plate received positive reviews, the lack of a key component – raspberry gel – brought about her demise.

Anushka said her time in the MasterChef kitchen had been an incredible experience, but she was ready to go home. “It was a crazy experience. It was something I never thought I’d do, but I’ve done it and I have no regrets,” she said. “It was quite intense during my final days of the competition. I was physically very, very tired and I think I went into my final elimination challenge with the state of mind [that] I was ready to go home. I didn’t have nerves or anxiety – I was just spent.”

Anushka says she’s already started planning for the next step of her journey. “My long-term plan is to have a cooking school that will focus on using cooking as a form of therapy for food-related mental health issues like anorexia and bulimia,” she said. “Cooking can be a massive reliever and can help reduce stresses. “It won’t work for everyone, but … cooking isn’t just about food.”

An 11-year-old boy has been hospitalised after being mauled on the face by his family’s pet dog in Melbourne’s north-west. The child suffered facial injuries after being bitten by the dog, a doberman, in the backyard of his home at Cairnlea. Emergency services were called to the Spearfelt Court property at 3.20pm. “Local rangers are attending the scene and will remove the dog which has been temporarily secured in the rear yard,” a police spokeswoman said. Brimbank Council’s city development director Kelvin Walsh said council officers had been assisting police. “In a tragic backyard attack, an 11-year-old child was mauled on the face by a family doberman,” he said. “Our thoughts are with the family of the injured child and we wish the child a speedy recovery. “Council animal management officers were called to assist police. The dog is not registered. “Council will continue to offer Victoria Police ongoing assistance in the investigation.” The boy was taken to The Royal Children’s Hospital in a stable condition. It follows the death of Mill Park man Leo Biancofiore on Wednesday who was mauled by his son’s American Staffordshire terrier. Police were called to a house on Ancona Drive in Mill Park about 6.40pm on July 10 following reports a man had been attacked. Spreading Laura’s love By Tate Papworth Laura Fregonese effortlessly commanded the attention of every room she entered. A lover of dance, fashion and the Western Bulldogs, Laura’s infectious energy attracted people. Laura’s brother Marcus says she was always positive, warm and never short of a smile, which is why it came as a complete shock to everyone when she took her own life in 2009. “She worked hard, she was studying PR at uni, she was a typical 20-year-old girl just enjoying life and navigating her way through it all.

“But behind the scenes there were some challenges and demons that nobody knew about. “I suppose it was her nature that she didn’t want to burden anybody with her problems.” Ten years on Marcus says not a day goes by where he doesn’t think about his little sister. “I think about the world we live in today, the charities that exist, the social commentary and I think if it had’ve been now, could she have been saved? “Back then it still wasn’t something that was discussed openly, in some sections it was even looked on as a bit taboo.” Marcus, director of hockingstuart Sunshine, says Laura spread love everywhere she went and so in that spirit the Spread the Laura Love Charity Gala was born. “I’ve always wanted to honour Laura’s memory and legacy. Cardiac care heads to stores Some of Brimbank’s biggest supermarkets will soon be fitted with life-saving machinery. Coles and selected Woolworths stores are set to unveil Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to provide rapid care to customers or staff having a sudden cardiac arrest. The roll-out across Coles stores is the byproduct of a partnership between the supermarket chain and the Heart Foundation. Coles director of safety David Brewster said staff would be trained to use the equipment. “By having defibrillators available for our customers and team members, we will be even more able to provide help that has been shown to increase the chances of survival for people who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest,” he said. “All our first-aid team members will be trained in the use of the AED … we have chosen an easy-to-use device that includes audio and visual instructions.” The announcement follows a move by Woolworths to introduce an AED to its Caroline Springs store last month. Group manager Alain Gradidge said he was pleased with the move. “Having the local community able to access this treatment, could help to save lives,” Mr Gradidge said. “The best medical advice tells us that access to an AED early on can greatly increase the chance of survival.” Tate Papworth

Recently anointed NAIDOC Person of the Year Dean Duncan conducted a smoking ceremony for the children. “Essentially, it’s to cleanse the place and provide a safe, caring, nurturing environment for the kids,” Mr Duncan said. “It reassures parents, as well, that they’re coming to a centre that provides that … and more importantly it gets rid of all the negativity surrounding us in the community.” Mr Duncan said his recent award came as a surprise, but meant the world to him.

“It holds a lot of significance within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” he said. “I love coming to places like this and educating, so to be recognised for it is fantastic. “Education has always been a personal passion of mine. Growing up in the bush, I wasn’t allowed to go to the local school because I was Aboriginal. “I even had to wait until I was about 12 years old until I was allowed to swim in the town, so education around respect and different cultures is close to my heart.” Tate Papworth

Cops probe footy coach attack By Lance Jenkinson Victoria Police and the Western Region Football League are investigating after a heated after-game confrontation led to St Albans coach Perry Meka requiring hospital treatment. The WRFL confirmed an incident took place after the Hoppers Crossing and St Albans division 1 game at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday, July 6. Video of the incident shows supporters gathered outside the ground. It is alleged that soon after, the St Albans coach was struck and

taken to hospital with head injuries. A WRFL statement said: “The WRFL can confirm an alleged incident took place 45 minutes to an hour after Saturday’s senior match between Hoppers Crossing and St Albans. The WRFL is investigating further, as are the two clubs. “The WRFL is proud of the tireless work clubs and the league undertake to establish a safe, welcoming and family-friendly environment.” Hoppers Crossing president Darren Cassar condemned acts of violence at football matches. Cassar, who had left Hogans Road Reserve before the alleged incident took place, offered

his support to Meka and stood in solidarity with St Albans president James Perkin. “Football clubs and football grounds are a happy place for people to come and show support, regardless of what team they’re supporting, and should be made to feel safe,” he said. Cassar has been in contact with Meka since the alleged incident to check on his health. “I’ve spoken to him three times and he seems to be OK,” Cassar said. “I wish St Albans all the very best for the remainder of the year. I wish Perry Meka all the very best.”

Cassar said the Hoppers Crossing Football Club had co-operated with both Victoria Police and WRFL investigations. He praised the WRFL for its support of both sides. “The WRFL have been instrumental again in support to both clubs,” Cassar said. “I really hope we can all move on as a football community.” Perkin said he had been instructed by Victoria Police not to comment on what is an ongoing investigation. “Police have instructed me to say nothing,” Perkin said.

Pay dirt with giant spud A St Albans man couldn’t believe his eyes when he uncovered a giant sweet potato from his neglected garden bed. Gus Favola planted a crop of sweet potato a number of years ago and had left the garden to its own devices since. “I obviously missed a few smaller ones after I harvested my first crop,” he said. “They’d just been sitting in the garden – I and hadn’t done much, in fact I’d left them, even things like water was only what it got from the sky. “They eventually took over the whole garden and I went to harvest them because they were spilling over to my lawn.” Mr Favola’s neglect proved to be a gardening masterstroke. “The top of the potato was poking out so I cleaned around it and as I dug it just kept getting bigger and bigger. “I haven’t officially weighed it, but I’d guess

it’s around 10 kilograms, which is a little off the record of 38 kilograms from over in Spain.” As for what to do with the prized potato, Mr Favola hopes it can go to those who need it most. “It’s far too big for me to eat. I’m hoping a kitchen or from a place that helps those in need might want it, they keep for about six months.” He said he hopes to harvest again next year. “What I’ve missed will grow again this spring. Not sure how much I’ll get. If conditions are right, it’ll grow next year.” Tate Papworth

Sun may set on women’s project By Alesha Capone A group which offers education and social activities for women with disabilities, mental health issues and chronic illnesses is facing an uncertain future, due to a cut in funding. The Sunrise women’s groups, run by Women’s Health West (WHW), meet fortnightly in Laverton, Sunshine and Wyndham. Under the initiative, WHW also runs a group in Melton for carers. The Sunrise program, which has been running for more than three decades, is attended by about 70 women every year.

The Sunrise program is mostly funded by the state government, along with some funding from the commonwealth. But as government funding doesn’t cover the full costs of running the program, WHW has been contributing its own money to help keep the program afloat for many years. In addition, the introduction of the NDIS means Women’s Health West is set to lose about one third of the government funding it receives for the Sunrise groups. Star Weekly understands that WHW has already been forced to reduce the number of Sunrise groups it offers.

From January next year, WHW have to cease running the Melton group and it will need to review the entire Sunrise program next year. In response, WHW has launched a fundraising campaign, asking for donations from the public, to help keep the Sunrise program afloat. WHW’s strategy, advocacy and community engagement director Louise Falconer, said: “Women’s Health West’s Sunrise program has a number of tangible benefits for women in our community who are living with a disability. “We’re committed to raising as much funding as we can to ensure its longevity.”

A state government spokesperson said: “A portion of Women’s Health West Home and Community Care – Program for Younger People (HACC–PYP) funding is being transferred to the NDIS according to the number of their clients who transition to the new scheme.” The spokesperson said Women’s Health West would continue to receive HACC–PYP funding to support clients not eligible for the NDIS. Bollywood by design A Brimbank woman is joining a Bollywood megastar and his wife in bringing the flair of Indian fashion to Melbourne. Vishwajeet Pradhan, who has appeared in more than 200 movies and his wife, Sonalika, will host the inaugural India Fashion Week Australia in Melbourne next month and hopes it’s the start of big things. Vishwajeet said the event was about providing a platform. “As an actor, wherever I have worked, I’ve always thought Australia has a huge talent pool – whether it be in acting, painting, design, modeling,” he said. “But there’s not sufficient platforms here. I’m sad these creatives have to go to LA, London or Canada … if we can create something locally, that would be the goal.” Sonalika said while the Melbourne event would be the first, but by no means be small.

“It’s not just about designers – there will be performances and lots of awards,” she said. “MTV India and Colours TV will be televising this to 50 million people in 17 countries and in 2020 we’re hoping to take this to Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Sydney.” The gala celebration will have Brimbank representation, with local Amanda Pollard named as one of the judges. “I’m really excited to see the designers who are attending,” she said. “We’ll be judging the emerging talent. Springing into action The Spring Hills Football Club turned pink on Sunday night. Hosting its fifth annual Think Pink Foundation game day, the female sides ditched their regular uniform for pink attire, all in the name of raising funds to support women and men with breast cancer. independent foundation that raises funds to provide free services to breast cancer patients and their families, assisting them with their cancer journey. “We hold a sausage sizzle, rattle tins and at the end of the day there’s a fun match between the mums to raise a bit of money too. “We try to raise about $10,000 for the cause but there’s a bit of an education element too.” Money raised from the day provides services such as free unlimited counselling with breast care nurses, free accommodation for families from regional Victoria, professionally fitted free wigs and therapeutic massage and exercise classes. A helping hand for James By Alesha Capone For young James Quinn, it’s a helping hand like no other. The four-year-old boy has been given a Batman-inspired prosthetic hand, thanks to an innovative and environmentally-friendly organisation based in the west. James, who was born with an underdeveloped hand, was last week presented with a plastic “Phoenix Hand” which will assist him in learning how to manipulate his hand muscles and provide mobility support.

The Phoenix Hand was created at the Werribee-based Envision Hands, a joint venture between charity Envision and the Wyndham Rotary Club. The project turns recycled plastic bottle caps into prosthetic arms and hands for children around the world. Envision Hands is aiming to collect one million bottle tops and turn them into 100 prosthetic hands and arms before the end of the year. The initiative, a world-first, involves the plastic from donated bottle caps being turned into material used to create parts for a custom-made artificial limb, via a 3D printer. The Coca-Cola Foundation has provided Envision Hands with a grant to purchase a “Shruder”, a plastic shredding machine created by Plastic Collective, so they can shred the bottle tops. project after a breakfast lady from her son’s kindergarten contacted the project’s founder, Sean Teer, on their behalf. “Sean said that he and Joe (project co-ordinator Joe Ferlazzo) would love to meet all of us, measure James up for a prosthetic hand and we did just that,” she said. Mrs Quinn said that the Envision Hands

team had visited the kindergarten, and their family’s Melton home, to measure and fit James’ prosthetic. Mrs Quinn said James was “a massive superhero fan” and that he had described his Batman-inspired hand as “brilliant”. “James is such a smart, confident boy and we only want to see his confidence keep growing

as he gets older,” she said. “We hope that by having this prosthetic it will allow him to stay confident and the cool factor of it being a superhero hand will help the way other kids interact with James as well.” Envision has set up webpage to raise funds. Cr Sophie Ramsey Winter is bearing down on us with a vengeance now, so I hope everyone is keeping warm and avoiding that dreaded flu. I was thrilled to see that significant investment in sports infrastructure, and the increase of the Pensioner Rebate program, were included as part of Council’s expenditure in our 2019/2020 Budget. Investment in recreation, leisure and community facilities have been long-standing priorities for me, so it was especially pleasing to see the allocation of $15.3 million for key infrastructure projects, including $3 million for the construction of stage 1 of the Cobblebank Indoor Stadium— an initiative I put forward, and a vital project I’ve long advocated for. The multipurpose stadium which will include six highball courts and change rooms, as well as parking and

MY BRIMBANK Jozsef Tallosi’s music rings out through the halls of Sunshine and Footscray hospitals, giving a lift to patients and staff alike. He spoke to Tate Papworth about his love of violin and classical music. What’s your connection to the area? I’ve been playing the violin at Footscray and Sunshine hospitals for about eight months now. Tuesday at Footscray and Wednesday at Sunshine. What spurred you into volunteering your time? I love playing the violin. A musicians unwritten task is to let people hear something they don’t know. A lot of people come up to me and ask what music I’m playing. I like to think they go home and look up the composer. I love spreading good music. I bet the patients and staff appreciate your music? I get lots of comments. I’m not a comment hunter at all. It’s really lovely when people do come up to you and tell you they love it. Some people even stop for 5-6 minutes and listen. They’re the real listeners. If after that they say they love it, then that means a lot.

Where did you learn? I was taught in a normal school in Budapest. I moved out to Australia in 1986, but I’ve made sure I keep playing. I came to Melbourne – I’ve done other jobs, but the violin has always been with me. When I first got here, some weeks I worked 70-75 hours, but I’ve always managed because of the violin.

When did you start playing? All my life. The violin was bought for my brother who is two years older than me. That didn’t work out that well and my father asked if I wanted it. I said yes and it went from there.

The community’s first chance to have its say on Brimbank Council’s proposal for a $30 million civic centre produced some fiery debate, new ideas and a strong warning against development at Errington Reserve. The council is hosting four community consultation evenings, with the first held at the Errington Community Centre in St Albans last Wednesday, just metres from the council’s preferred site.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives the thumbs up to an old favourite’s revamp The many shoulder-to-shoulder eating houses of Footscray are forever in a state of flux. Old ones close, new ones open, stayers are overhauled, new names and a lick of paint are applied to the tired – and some disappear forever. It’s a fascinating cycle, one experienced – often subliminally – by anyone who spends time there. And so it is that our fave pho joint has had a makeover. We’ve always favoured Hien Vuong Pasteur – for the high quality of its food, but also because it’s a smallish family operation that can be relied upon to always have a seat or table to spare. So in some ways we’re sad to see its old-school formica/utilitarian/white classic pho house appearance give way to something hipper. But in truth the revamp here has been done with more class than most in this neighbourhood – it’s stylish and welcoming, a central high table with stools surrounded by orthodox tabling. And it appears to be working! On both our recent visits, the place has been bustling. And the food? Well that hasn’t changed – still top-shelf pho house classics, including superb medium pho with sliced chicken and beef ($12). Like most of its kind, Hien Vuong Pasteur has a smallish range of more exotic dishes, including bo kho (beef stew, $12).

SPORT Albanvale’s hard work rewarded in winning weekend Albanvale has secured some big wins during its seven-game unbeaten run in the Western Region Football League division 3, but this was the one they desired the most. The Cobras had a commanding 48-point victory over Tarneit at Robert Bruce Reserve on Saturday, which ticked all the boxes. Firstly, it got a bit of payback on Tarneit, a side that had beaten them by 37 points earlier in the season. This was seen as the “last challenge” for the Cobras after beating all the other teams in the league this season. A victory like this was also handy reward for the hardy Cobras fans. Cobras coach Andrew Bryson was also not shying away from the value the win will have for his team’s confidence. “The major focus for us today was knowing the importance of winning and what it meant for the rest of the season,” he said.

“We really wanted to test ourselves against another top-three side. Albanvale’s hunger and tenacity was on show from the opening bounce. The Cobras burst out to a 36-point quarter

Sunshine glows in rain By Lance Jenkinson A Ben McInneny masterclass of the forward craft had Sunshine in seventh heaven in the Western Region Football League division 1. McInneny kicked a game-breaking seven goals to lead the Kangaroos to a 44-point win over Point Cook at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday. It was the Roos first win since May, ending a five-game losing streak. Kangaroos coach Adam Contessa lauded McInneny’s monumental effort on a wet and windy day not usually suited to commanding performances from key forwards. “He was presenting really well and he just had sticky fingers today,” Contessa said. “He got into the right spots, he made a few tough marks look easy and then he also capitalised. “It’s about making the most of your opportunities and he did that. “He kicked 7.1.” McInneny’s seven was also a reflection on the silver service that went into the Sunshine forward 50. The Kangaroos opted for a direct link to goal, rather than overusing the ball. It worked with the Roos kicking 20 goals on what should have been tough conditions for scoring. “We kept it pretty basic because of the conditions that we had,” Contessa said. “We couldn’t be going wide and having tough shots.” Sunshine’s forward line clicked for its second-best score of the season – 20.11 (131) to 13.9 (87). If McInneny was not reeling in the marks, it was Lachie Smart picking up the ball like a Hoover. Smart relished his chance to play exclusively forward and snared three goals to go with strong forward defensive pressure. “He’s been playing forward and through the midfield this season, but we just said we want you forward today and your role is to crumb the packs, present and make the most of the opportunities and he did,” Contessa said. Midfielders resting forward, Jake Allan and Josh Linton, finished with two goals apiece for Sunshine. Declan Moloney was immense in the ruck for the Kangaroos. Moloney was not only effective with his tap work, but also got plenty of the ball around the ground to finish with 23 possessions. The Thunder was on-song from the outset, opening up a 14-point lead by the end of the first quarter, which stretched out further the longer the game went on. Balmoral’s form an ominous sign for opponents Balmoral’s form has been second to none over the past two months in the Football Victoria men’s state league 5 west, but they are keeping a firm lid on expectations. Even amid an eight-game unbeaten run, which has included seven emphatic wins by three goals or more and seen them move into the title race, Balmoral coach Sergio Lunedei will not allow his charges to look any further than seven days into the future. “I don’t think about winning leagues, I just think about the next opponent,” Lunedei said. “Every week we’ve got someone to beat and if it ends up bringing us to the league then we’ll win the league. “We’re trying to build up the culture at Balmoral first of all.” Balmoral smashed open the premiership race with a 4-1 win over Barnstoneworth United, who entered the round on top of the ladder, at

JT Gray Reserve on Saturday. All of a sudden it has turned into a four-horse race with Keilor Wolves (32 points), Balmoral, Barnstoneworth United and Barwon (all 31) separated by just one point. If Balmoral suffers a loss to fifth-placed Ballarat this Saturday, you can add another name to the list of title and promotion hopefuls. By Lance Jenkinson Melbourne Knights have a chance to become the first club in the 110-year history of the Dockerty Cup to achieve 10 titles. The Knights advanced to the final with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over FC Bulleen Lions in the semi final at Broadmeadows Valley Park on Wednesday night. Standing in the way of the nine-time winners will be Hume City, who they will face in a mouth-watering final at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on August 10 to decide the 2019 champions. Knights caretaker coach Marijan Cvitkovic is proud of the work that his team has put in to reach this point of the competition. “It’s a really good feeling,” he said. “It’s a fantastic reward for the group. “It hasn’t been an easy run to get to the final. “We’ve played some really difficult teams along the way, but the boys have shown their character. “We’re really looking forward to it. “Hopefully we can end this cup run with a bit of silverware, which would be fantastic for the group.” Melbourne Knights were not too worried about going into the half-time break against Bulleen a goal down. The Knights were kicking into a forceful breeze in the first half, which played a massive part in their concession of the first goal to Bulleen’s Phil Petreski. “They scored a freak goal from the corner that went straight in due to the wind and the rain being so strong,” Cvitkovic said. “I don’t think it was in Jordan’s [Gifkins] control at all as a goalkeeper. “So at half time, the message was just to stay patient and don’t get too frustrated.” The game changed complexion with immediate effect in the second half. Once the Knights took the lead, they never looked like squandering it. “We only had a couple of key points at half time, which was play to feet, stay patient and not to get too frustrated and the boys did that in the second half,” Cvitkovic said. “We were playing to feet, we were attacking and we were smart with the ball.” Watson is one of the recruits of the year for the Melbourne Knights. Not only is the New Zealander a handful for opposition defenders, but his tireless work rate allows him to be an extra number when the Knights are on the back foot.
