Magic Man has a festival spell
(Luke Hemer)
One of Melbourne’s most loved magicians is bringing his mind-bending act to the Melbourne Magic Festival in the school holidays. Albion local Alex the Magician sold out his performances last year and says his shows will be even bigger and better this time around. “It’s a bit of a family magic show with a difference,” he says. “It’s a show about a magician who’s on the hunt to find the world’s most awesome magic trick. “It’s a family show, but there’s a lot of amazing, magic moments that adults will be astonished by, too. “It’s mainly a show for kids aged five to 12, but it’s a show with a difference – the kids are invited to help out and get involved as we hunt for the final surprise.” Alex said the festival was a highlight. “The show has been selling out each year, so it’s kind of found its feet and it’s something I love to mix up each year,” he said. “It’s the largest public magic festival in the world – there’s over 300 shows.” Alex’s show will be held at The Melba Spiegeltent, 35 Johnston Street, Collingwood, from Monday, July 8, to Saturday, July 13. Sensors for parking bays By Tate Papworth Brimbank council will introduce parking sensors in a number of on-street parking bays in Sunshine and St Albans. The sensors will allow council officers to track parking data, including duration of occupancy, making it easier to issue infringement notices to motorists who exceed time limits. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the sensors would help ensure turnover in high-demand areas.

“The sensors are intended to help with turnover of parking in line with parking limits, and to ensure sufficient parking is available for visitors, customers and residents,” she said. “Parking limits are there for a reason. They make it easier for drivers to find a parking space

in areas of high demand, which ultimately allows more visitors and customers to flow through our town centres. “One hundred parking sensors will be installed in selected on-street public carparking spaces – 50 along Devonshire Road, Sunshine, and 50 in Alfreida Street, St Albans. “There will be no changes to your obligations as a driver,” Cr Congreve said. “You still need to obey the limit on the parking sign. There will be no change to how parking infringements are issued.”
Cr Congreve said the sensors would have other benefits. “In addition to helping with the turnover of parking, the sensors will collect data that will help council to better understand parking use and demand within our town centres,” she said. “It’s also an efficient way for council to manage public parking without having to rely so heavily on manual chalking of tyres.” The sensors are expected to be turned on this month. The council says more information will be available closer to the date.

Third runway ‘soul destroying’ By Tate Papworth Melbourne Airport’s third runway plans have been described as a ‘demolition order’ for Keilor. The airport last week announced that plans to build its third runway as east-west facing had been put on hold because a possible north-south runway could “deliver superior outcomes”. However, Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association president Susan Jennison said it would be far from a superior outcome for Keilor.
‘‘
We really need the runway capacity
’’
- Lyell Strambi
“It’s a demolition order. It’ll destroy Keilor. There’s no consideratiom – it’s soul destroying,” she said. “I honestly can’t believe it. I can’t believe the amount of work put in over the years and suddenly there’s a change of mind.” The airport has long planned to include four runways in a hashtag formation and
had resolved to build its third runway on an east-west alignment. However, Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said new data had prompted a re-think. “Our review provides strong evidence to suggest the north-south parallel could now provide a superior outcome in terms of availability, capacity, long-term investment profile and community impacts.” Mr Strambi said it had been determined an east-west runway would allow for significantly less traffic than first thought.
If the airport opts to build in a north-south direction it would mean an increase in traffic over Brimbank suburbs. Mr Strambi said a decision on the best option would be made as soon as possible. “We really need the runway capacity and the sooner we can build it, the better,” he said. The airport anticipates a three-month review period during which 18 community workshops will be held. Mr Strambi said it was imperative the airport made the correct decision, but was conscious of its responsibility to neighbouring communities.

Firebrace’s X-factor hits St Albans While in Brimbank, he visited Copperfield College, where he spoke of his journey and encouraged students to follow their dreams. A few lucky people will have the chance to take the stage with the star on Sunday. On the day of the performance, a limited number of people will have the opportunity to work with Firebrace and learn his new song, Spirit. They’ll then be invited to perform it with him on stage during the concert. Firebrace has a strong connection with his indigenous heritage and his concert marks the start of NAIDOC week in Brimbank.

An internationally acclaimed artist will perform an intimate show at St Albans’ Bowery Theatre this weekend. Isaiah Firebrace, winner of the eighth season of The X Factor Australia will perform his Live and Beyond concert for 200 people on Sunday. While well known in Australia, Firebrace became popular worldwide after he performed in the 2017 Eurovision song contest grand final with his single, Don’t Come Easy Easy. Having just completed shows in Europe and the Sydney Opera House, Firebrace is embarking on a series of more intimate shows.
J.R. Parsons Reserve is set for a long overdue upgrade. Brimbank council has unveiled a draft community vision and site plan, which is set to revitalise the tired facilities. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council wanted to make the reserve a place people could be proud of. “The aim of the draft community vision and site plan is to make this reserve the best it can be for the wider local community and the sports clubs that call the reserve home,” she said. “We want to create new opportunities for the reserve to become a destination for locals to socialise, play, exercise and network; while also improving the landscape, safety and amenity.” The plan includes widening oval two to allow a 50 metre radius cricket oval within the sports field. The surface would be upgraded with warm season grass. New lighting would also be installed. A new tennis pavilion and courts would be installed and the carpark extended to 120 spaces. Cr Congreve said community feedback had already helped develop the draft plan. “We’ve already undertaken a range of consultations to help inform the development of this draft community vision. “The response has been great to date. We thank everyone who has already been part of this process which has helped shape the draft vision.” The draft plan is open for public exhibition until July 29. Kealba plans slammed
By Tate Papworth
Brimbank councillors have slammed a developer for taking an application to build 208 townhouses and units on a former school site in Kealba directly to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The council was set to vote on the planning application last week but the council’s city development director Kelvin Walsh said the developer had decided to have the matter heard in VCAT. “In the case of the application for approval of a development plan for the site at 27 Driscolls
Road, Kealba, council officers had assessed the proposal that was originally submitted for 232 dwellings and had advised the applicant that they could not support that proposal,” he said. “The applicant made changes to the proposal to reduce the development to 208 dwellings, however officers had advised that there were still significant concerns with the proposal and they were still unable to support it.” Kealba residents opposed to the scale of the development rallied at the site prior to last week’s council meeting. According to one organiser, more than 200 people attended to voice their concern.
Mr Walsh said the developer had waited 60 days after being provided the amended plans before taking the matter directly to VCAT for consideration. Cr Daniel Allan said: “When you have a plan where council officers have raised a dozen different issues … when you have … nearly 800 objections by locals – you have to ask yourself, ‘What made the developer think that 208 units and townhouses is a positive outcome for the community?’. “Simply put, this development plan does not benefit the community.” The matter will be heard at VCAT this month.
Brimbank council has joined a growing number of governments in declaring a climate emergency. The council last week unanimously passed a motion by Cr John Hedditch to declare a climate emergency. Council officers will now prepare a plan which will outline the steps the council will take to ‘restore a safe climate’. “It’s a significant risk, climate change, not just to the community, but to the world,” Cr Hedditch said. “Within Brimbank, we already see an increase in frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, declining rainfall and an increase in overall temperatures, which impacts the most vulnerable residents. “It will affect our economy, our fleet, our sustainability, our health and human services responses – it covers the whole of council and … will require a whole of council response.” The move was welcomed by the Brimbank Climate Action group, which put forward a petition with 307 signatures requesting the council declare an emergency. Brimbank Climate Action co-founder Julia Collin said the residents were heard. “It’s possible, and necessary, for local government to play a role in the climate emergency.” More than 20 Victorian councils have declared a climate emergency as part of a worldwide campaign. Pupils put in top effort Pupils at University Park Primary School are taking an important cause to the floors of Keilor Central. Grade 1 and 2 pupils at the St Albans school have been collecting bottle tops for community aid organisation Envision so they can be used to help create 3D printed hands for children in developing countries. As part of the campaign, a collection bin has been set up at Keilor Central to collect bottle tops. Centre assistant marketing manager Daniela Valencia said the initiative had proven successful. “It’s been really lovely to see how much this has been embraced,” she said. “One of the teachers in charge of it let us
know customers were really curious, so they’ve decided to keep it longer than originally planned.” As well as the bin, pupils have spent time at the centre to help educate shoppers. The message: “Does the community realise that bottle tops cannot go into their recycling bin at home?” features prominently on the collection bin, which will remain at Keilor Central throughout the school holidays. “To be able to support a local school has been great – it’s something we want to do a lot more of,” Ms Valencia said. “It’s fantastic to see young people passionate about such a terrific cause.” Tate Papworth

‘Exhausted, alone’: Call for help By Tate Papworth A leading advocate for carers in Brimbank is calling for the establishment of a carers hub to be made a priority. Despina Havelas said she had to leave her job to care for her son because there was little in the way of support. “NDIS feels like you’re learning a new language and there’s not much around to help you learn the terminology,” Ms Havelas said. “When my son finished school last year, I didn’t know where to go – there just wasn’t much in place to help with the transition.”
Ms Havelas said there had been much talk from Brimbank council about establishing a hub for carers, but nothing had eventuated. “All three tiers of government should be supporting carers,” she said. “What is the council doing? “There’s been plenty of times that I’ve been exhausted and alone. “A hub would give people in the same situation a chance to speak to others, to know they’re not alone, to find important information and to find agencies. “The NDIS is incredibly complex. Brimbank has a high number of people where English
isn’t their first language – if I found it hard to understand, how are they going to go?” Brimbank community wellbeing director Kath Brackett said the council feasibility study into a hub, endorsed at the council’s meeting in December, 2018, didn’t support the concept. “The evaluation found a range of priority needs and issues relevant to people with disability, their families and carers,” she said. “[It] determined that due to the diversity and complexity of these issues and needs, allocation of physical space or the provision of an information focal point alone
would not adequately respond to this range of needs. “The evaluation made a number of recommendations aimed at building council and the community’s capacity to respond to these needs. “In tracking the implementation of these recommendations, council has been providing quarterly updates to council’s Disability Advisory Committee. “Council also recognises that accessibility is a key factor and making use of council facilities, such as neighbourhood houses across the municipality, needs to beconsidered.”
PJ parade at hospital Sunshine Hospital staff have worn pyjamas to work – in a bid to get patients to shed theirs. The Western Health campaign is a 100-day challenge that is encouraging patients to ditch their pyjamas in favour of regular clothes, when suitable. End PJ Paralysis campaign founder Brian Dolan said getting out of pyjamas had a proven positive impact on recovery. “We know that keeping people in bed is harmful,” he said. “They have more harm events in terms of pressure sores and falls, they have a longer length of stay. So we’re actually killing them with kindness by keeping them there. “We’re dealing with a problem that’s been hidden in plain sight – it’s always been there. “If you are a relative or loved one, bring clothes in and encourage your family member to get dressed and go for a little walk each day –
even meeting in the coffee shop, rather than by the bedside. With your help, and together, we can End PJ Paralysis.” About 100 staff wore their pyjamas to help launch the campaign last week. Professor Dolan said it was terrific to see the campaign so widely embraced. “I’ve never seen so many people in their pyjamas at work – from the executive leadership onwards … going around talking to people, praising them and cheering them. “It’s good for staff themselves to experience that feeling of vulnerability and awkwardness, but it’s also a bit of fun.” Tate Papworth Brian Dolan (in striped nightshirt) with hospital staff. Rates cut on the way for most By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is upbeat about its 2019-20 budget. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the budget, adopted by the council last week, covered a number of initiatives and would deliver a win for ratepayers even as rate revenue increases by 2.5 per cent. “The vast majority of residential ratepayers – 72 per cent – will receive a reduction in their rates for 2019-2020 financial year,” she said. “As a community-first council, we are
delivering a budget that focuses on improving our city, investing in our built and natural environments and supporting our community to have the best possible quality of life.” The budget has allocated $71.6 million for capital works projects. In total, $29.6 million will be put towards road and footpath improvements, $16.8 million into sports facilities upgrades, $5.4 million for town centre upgrades and $4.9 million for parks, playgrounds and open space improvements. sustainability projects and $1.7 million will be used for bike and walking paths. The budget also includes $2.2 million for the redevelopment of the St Albans Leisure Centre, with further funding for construction to be allocated in the 2020-21 budget. “Importantly, the budget also includes
funding to develop the St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub in Keilor Downs,” Cr Congreve said. “Council is proud to get this project under way, with investment to continue in 2019-2020 and subsequent funding in the Long Term Financial Plan.” The budget includes $36,000 for the council’s plan to rid Brimbank of illegal brothels. Under the plan, investigators will be employed to enter alleged illegal establishments with the intent of gathering evidence that proves sexual services are being provided.

Meet Brimbank’s next generation of town planners. Grade 4 pupils at Sacred Heart Primary School in St Albans have spent the past term building a Lego municipality modelled on Brimbank. The pupils were asked to create layouts for new suburbs and choose buildings and other features to be included in each area, such as parks, houses, hospitals and schools. They also had to name their new suburbs. The layouts were then joined together to give the pupils a blueprint for their new municipality. Teacher Katie Bulboa said the project was part of the school’s STEM program. “We researched Brimbank City Council and solved problems we found in the community, such as sustainability,” she said. “The students built a whole new city council to help solve the problems of today.
“Each student had a specific job within their group. The project taught them about critical and creative thinking.” Next term the pupils are hoping to show their creation to Cr Margaret Giudice who visited them during the creation of Lego Brimbank. Laura Michell

Major project planning a priority By Tate Papworth
including encouraging jobs and investment, ensuring inclusive and locally responsive design, improving traffic and transport connections, best-practice project delivery and effective stakeholder engagement,” she said. “This is the start of something big in Brimbank. The Western Rail Strategy includes major improvements to the rail network that transects Brimbank, including building the Melbourne Airport Rail Link.” The council has unveiled its preferred urban design principles for the Sunshine super hub – with the hope it will pay homage to the area’s heritage.
Brimbank council says it will continue to push to have its voice heard as planning for major projects ramps up. The council has endorsed a draft response strategy to the Western Rail Plan, which includes the airport rail link and Sunshine super hub. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said community feedback had been included in the response, which would be submitted to the state government immediately. “Feedback covered a range of themes,
“In addition to developing Sunshine as a super hub station, these are transformational projects that will only succeed if the needs and aspirations of our community are embedded in project planning,” Cr Congreve said. There are 10 key urban design principles outlined by the council, including delivering a holistic integrated redevelopment of the station precinct, creating a “sense of place” for the local community with a distinctive character specific to Sunshine, maximising economic development opportunities and retaining, enhancing and expanding pedestrian linkages to the station and across the corridor.
The council is also calling for integration of local and regional cycle connections, engagement with the community as part of the decision-making process and sustainability. “These projects require extensive community input and we will work hard to make sure the voices of residents, businesses and community groups are heard throughout planning and construction,” Cr Congreve said. “Our next step is to develop an engagement program to develop a shared vision that articulates our community values and shared aspirations for the Western Rail Strategy in Brimbank.”
Carving out a legacy student could represent something from their own culture while incorporating indigenous art themes into their piece.” Each student will “thread” their completed art piece on to the pole, which will be installed at the garden near the school office. “It will be there forever and will be a representation of themselves that they will leave with the college,” Ms Brooks said. “We’re hoping to add more poles to the garden for the students to leave a legacy.”
Creativity is at the heart of the newest program at Lakeview Senior College in Caroline Springs. Year 12 students are carving out a “legacy” by creating a totem pole with the help of indigenous artist Simone Thomson as part of their creative industries VCAL program. Teacher Melanie Brooks, who leads the program with Rachel Collins, said the project was a hands-on experience for the students. “We started our creative industries program this year and decided that we wanted to bring in an indigeous artist to work with the students to teach them how culture is represented in art,” Ms Brooks said. “It’s really important for us to model and respect our indigenous culture to our kids. “Aboriginal art is a way of storytelling and connection to Dreamtime … we came up with the idea of creating a totem pole where each

2 July 2019 Melton City Council Community News
Celebrate NAIDOC Week
Mayor’s Message
Cr Bob Turner Last week, Council adopted its 2019/2020 Budget, demonstrating our continued commitment to delivering high quality programs, services and infrastructure to our residents, now and into the future. This financial year, we’ll be investing in infrastructure projects totalling $62.4 million; including roads ($19.2 million); buildings ($18.78 million); recreational, leisure and community facilities ($15.45 million); footpaths and cycle-ways ($1.09 million); and street lighting improvement ($154,000).
A wood burning workshop and a tour of Melton Botanic Garden are among the FREE events on offer in the City of Melton as part of NAIDOC Week. The annual celebration of Indigenous culture, achievement and history is an opportunity to learn something new and support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. In a special men’s workshop, artist Mick Harding will teach participants wood burning techniques. Come along to KIRRIP House on Monday, 8 July to learn this traditional craft from an expert in symbolism, culture and fine arts. Garden lovers, green thumbs and even foodies will enjoy next Friday’s event – a walking tour of Melton Botanic Garden. Your guides will show you plants indigenous to the Melton region and other Aboriginal-use plants including bush tucker plants. You will see Ryans Creek, the Indigenous Peoples Garden, Victorian Volcanic Plains Garden, the Bushfoods Garden and more. There will also be a flag raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at Melton Community Hall next Wednesday. All listed events are FREE. Men’s Wood Burning Workshop Date: Monday 8 July Time: 10am – 12pm

Significant capital projects include completion of Aintree Children’s and Community Centre; design of Eynesbury Station Learning Centre; extension of the Diggers Rest Preschool; signalisation of intersections at Taylors Road and Westwood Drive, Caroline Springs Boulevard and Rockbank Middle Road, and Ferris Road and Hollingsworth Drive; and
construction of playgrounds at Arbour Boulevard Reserve, Bloomsbury Drive Reserve and Morton Homestead. Recreational projects include design and construction of stages 1 and 2 of Eynesbury Recreation Reserve, stages 1-3 Macpherson Park redevelopment, and stage 1 of Cobblebank Indoor Stadium; replacement of Kurunjang Tennis Courts; and completion of City Vista Sports Pavilion and fields. I’d like to thank the residents and community groups who shared their ideas during the budget engagement process, and everyone who put forward a Section 223 Committee submission. Your insight enabled us to prepare a budget that strives to deliver infrastructure, programs and services for our community. To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au
Watts Ward
Cr Michelle Mendes Roads, buildings and recreation infrastructure, along with quality services and programs, dominated the 2019/2020 Budget, adopted by Council last month. Some great projects are set to be delivered across the municipality, like the design and construction of stages 1—3 of the MacPherson Park redevelopment; the construction of playgrounds at Bloomsbury Drive Reserve and Morton Homestead; and the extension of the Diggers Rest Kindergarten. All these projects are being undertaken in Watts Ward, and I for one am excited to see the community come together and enjoy these great facilities. Last week, Council marked the commencement of works on the Diggers Rest kindergarten extension, which will deliver a new kindergarten room, offices, and external playspaces to the existing centre.
The extension has been designed to meet the needs of the growing number of three-year-old and four-year-old children living in Diggers Rest. With around seven per cent of the Diggers Rest population aged under four years, this project will go a long way to ensuring local families have access to quality child care and educational services. And finally, if you’re looking for something interesting to do this week, I’d highly recommend popping into CS Gallery and taking a look at the outstanding Home exhibition—an impressive showcase of some never before seen textile artworks created by local artists. The State Government has refused to allow the Housing Commission and other government authorities to comply with the Uniform Building Regulations. This follows a request by Sunshine Council to the Premier requesting that he enact legislation to require compliance with all the provisions of the regulations from all State Government departments and instrumentalities.
A multi million industrial estate is to be built at Sunshine by Dalgety Developments, City Link Properties and Glen Gala Estates. Located on Fairburn Rd and the extension of Somerville Rd, Westlink Industrial Park is on land valued at more than $50 million, with an end development value of more than $250 million.
The John Darling and Son flour mill in Albion is set to reopen. The proprietor of the Sydney Street mill, Mr Chris Moss of Baramon Sales, made the revelation last week, ending almost two years of speculation about the future of the mill.
Brimbank property owners owe the council $7.3 million in unpaid rates from the last financial year. The council’s 2008-09 budget was worth $118 million, with rates revenue making up more that 72 per cent of cash flow.

(Tate Papworth)
MY BRIMBANK We ran breakfasts every month which just got bigger and bigger. We’d get 300-400 people. During our first couple of years we came up with lots of plans. What sort of plans? We got developers for Cairnlea, Caroline Springs, we were responsible for the Ring Road. One of our patrons happened to be Ralph Willis who was Bob Hawke’s treasurer at the time. He gave us the tip that if a road connects two highways, it’s a federal government responsibility. He had a chat with Bob and the plan to be able to drive from Albury to Geelong was realised with the Ring Road. We were also responsible for Docklands Stadium. We flew a plane over Melbourne – we needed a good sporting facility in Melbourne’s west. And you’re a mad Bulldogs supporter?
Joe Azzopardi lives and breathes the west. He spoke with Tate Papworth about starting a successful business, his role in major projects and his love of the Bulldogs. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I was born and bred in Sunshine. I was born at the Sunshine Hospital in 1945 and I’ve been a Sunshine boy through and through. There’s been many a day where I’ve been overseas and I’ve found myself telling people about Brimbank. And you got your first job in Brimbank? After graduating from school, I wanted to be a
fitter and turner. I went looking for work and managed to get a position at Fairway Scales. I started as an apprentice, then went into the machine shop, then the welding shop and then the drawing office.
my first job and I thought I wanted to offer opportunities to young people. I put on an apprentice. I put one on every year for 20 years – they were all with me 21 years later – the first one is there to this day.
And after that you opened your own business?
Tell us about your role as part of the Western Region Economic Development Organisation.
I decided to open my own business. I drew up a logo at my kitchen table and United Scales was born. We started in Braybrook – I always remembered the excitement I felt when I got
It consisted of about 10 people, I represented small business on it. We met every month with the view of creating employment in the west.
My family and I came back from a trip to Malta in the last week of September in 1954. It was the week the [Footscray] Bulldogs had won the grand final. There were red, white and blue streamers and balloons everywhere. I asked mum what was going on and she told me the local football team had won the premiership. I decided they were my team from then on and for the next 50 years we never won one. And you helped create football history. David Smorgan knocked on my door one day having heard about my business and that I loved the Bulldogs. He asked me to be part of a rival ticket and we eventually formed a board. I’d talked about the [team’s] name and was of the view we had to change it. Once David invited me in, I said I thought the name needed to be changed and that was the start of the Western Bulldogs.

Looking for all the world like a modest weatherboard from the street, this place reveals itself to be way more than that once you step onto the porch and through the door. The journey through shows a beguiling mix of stylish revamp and retro, contemporary edging out the few old-school elements. Rooms that stand out for their design pizzazz are the all-important kitchen and the shared bathroom. The former is a terrific space, with an island bench topped with white

Caesarstone, lots of white pot drawers and glass-fronted overheads, and an underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. A full-width window splashback is a stunning effect, as are the tiny red mosaics in splashbacks. A walk-in pantry doubles as the laundry. An adjoining meals area links with a large carpeted family room, a great spot for chilling out or entertaining. It has an ’80s look, with exposed ceiling beams and timber walls, as well as a brick bar in an island of slate. The spacious lounge room, open to the
entry hall, has an old-style gas heater set in a modern surround, as well as retro carpet that’s also in bedrooms. Those bedrooms, two with robes, share a bathroom decked out in grey and white, with walk-in shower and modern vanity and tapware. The alfresco area presents a surprise of the very good kind. A huge deck beneath the pergola’s exposed joists is fully enclosed and has a wood heater, while a timber-framed slider opens to another surprise. A timber arbour introduces a yard with

old tropical trees and plantings creating a jungle-like space that’s obviously been growing for years. It’s really quite special – and timber walkways add to the vibe. If you can bear to uproot this unique garden, the block of nearly 700 square metres (zoned residential) has redevelopment potential, STCA. It’s tucked of Ballarat Road, and a five-minute walk from Albion Primary School. This eye-opening property also has a garage and a shed. The generous open plan kitchen and meals area has plenty of windows to draw in light, while refreshed kitchen cabinets provide ample storage space. The house has two bedrooms and a bright central bathroom. In the backyard, mature fruit trees, lawn and paved zones invite the inclusion of new gardening and outdoor entertaining projects. Polished timber floorboards and air-conditioning are inclusions.

An expanse of green turf, landscaped gardens and bridge to the decked porch and front door present a vibrant welcome to this 1970s-era house. Inside, pale floors and walls keep the palette neutral. Glossy white floor tiles lead from the entry down a short corridor to the bright lounge room and living space and a pendant hangs from an ornate ceiling rose. Step through a sliding door and down into a light-filled dining area with a ceiling fan and trouble-free vinyl floors. This is overlooked by a kitchen with glossy cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances, splashback and benchtops as well as plenty of food preparation space. Four bedrooms grace the front of the house. SPORT Green Gully draws on confidence to topple Avondale Green Gully has conquered the toughest challenge in NPL Victoria soccer. Alex Salmon scored the winning goal in second-half stoppage time to lead the Cavaliers to a 2-1 win over runaway ladder leader Avondale at Avenger Park on Saturday. Salmon, the competition’s leading goal scorer, was played in by Cavaliers defender Daniel Jones, took on the last defender and powered it past the goalkeeper to spark wild celebrations on the visitors’ bench. Salmon revealed that encouragement from Cavaliers midfielder Jay Davies played a part in him taking on the last defender and working into a one-on-one position with the goalkeeper to score the winner. “I could hear Jay behind me just saying, ‘Get at him’, so that’s what I did,” Salmon said. “I just took him on, their keeper came out and luckily I just found the corner with my shot.” Even when Green Gully found itself a goal
Alex Salmon scored his 18th goal for the season for Green Gully. (Paul Crossley/GGSC)
down after eight minutes when Liam Boland, a former Cavs player, scored for Avondale, Salmon had belief. “Everyone knows in and around the squad,
we’ve got quality players,” Salmon said. “I don’t think we ever struggle to score goals, so it was just important to not let your heads go down when you concede a goal with a lot of time left.” Green Gully got back into the contest when Andy Brennan coolly slotted an equaliser before half-time. The Cavaliers fed off that goal and a positive team talk from coach Stephen Downes at the break. “He said if we bring the same intensity and everything we had been doing in the first half and take that into the second, we’d win the game – and that’s what we did,” Salmon said. The win was significant for Green Gully because it had drawn all four earlier matches in June. Getting three points and solidfying their spot in fifth – five points inside the top six – was a weight off the Cavalier shoulders. “There’s been a lot of drama in the last couple of minutes in the last couple of weeks,” Salmon said. “It was nice to be in the right end of one
this week. The lads stuck together, they worked hard and we got our reward in the end.” Green Gully will host South Melbourne in a blockbuster on Saturday from 3pm at Green Gully Reserve. Meanwhile, Melbourne Knights left Port Melbourne with glum faces after a 2-1 loss at SS Anderson Oval on Saturday evening. Mohamed Awad put the Knights ahead in the 62nd minute, but the Sharks claimed all three points with late goals to Yuta Konagaya and Finn Beakhurst. In NPL Women’s, Calder United scored three goals in each half in a 6-0 win over Bayside United at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex. Catherine Zimmerman scored a double for Calder with the rest coming in singles from Adriana Taranto, Melissa Taranto, Angela Beard and substitute Polly Doran. Lance Jenkinson

Westgate’s week of woe By Lance Jenkinson Westgate might have won at the weekend, but it did not win the week in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west. In an unfortunate twist to its season, Westgate finished a rollercoaster week three points worse off in the standings, despite picking up a 2-0 win over Altona East Phoenix at Paisley Park on Saturday. Through no fault of the players, Westgate had six points deducted from its points tally, the club received a $3500 fine and a club associate was banned for life for throwing a can at a referee after emotions boiled over after the round 10 game against Hoppers Crossing. The net result at the end of a week’s worth of work for Westgate was -3 in the points column. While the Westgate powerbrokers attended tribunals and will consider appealing the severity of the points deduction, all that coach Nik Kovacevic and playing group could do was get on with the job. 40 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 2, 2019
In tough wintry conditions, Westgate managed to return home with a two-goal win against a plucky Altona East Phoenix. “It’s disappointing, obviously,” Kovacevic said of what transpired in the lead-up to the game. “The playing group gets punished for something they haven’t done. “That was going to be a challenge for the playing group, could they get over the little hurdle after finding out the news on Tuesday night at training? “We responded well, so that’s all I can ask.” Westgate had the unenviable task of kicking into the breeze in the first half. While there was a bit of damage limitation mode about their play, Westgate was not without its chances. Just before the half time whistle, Westgate found the game’s opening goal through Bobby Eftimoski. “The wind was straight down one end,” Kovacevic said.
“It’s challenging when it’s that strong, it’s a lot harder for the team trying to get out. “The keepers were trying to clear the ball and it wouldn’t have been going 25 or 30 metres.” Westgate had the game more on its own terms in the second half. The key driver for Westgate was new recruit Josh Calabria. Calabria, brought in from NPL club Pascoe Vale, dictated play from the central midfield position. “It’s no coincidence that we’ve done really well in the last three weeks since he’s come in,” Kovacevic said. It was not until late in the second half that Westgate would get the insurance goal it needed. Eftimoski turned from scorer to provider, sending in the cross that found young winger Daniel Soumelidis at the back post and he made no mistake with the finish. Westgate will host Hume United on Saturday evening at Ardeer Reserve.
Keilor Thunder put on a late show to snap a four-game losing streak in the Big V basketball men’s state championship. The Thunder squared their season win-loss ledger at 9-9 with a come-from-behind 81-74 win over Corio Bay Stingrays in a low scoring tussle at Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday night. Trailing by four points at three quarter time, Keilor produced a dominant fourth quarter, out-scoring the Stingrays 26-15 in the period. BJ Symons was the go-to player for Keilor. Symons finished with an efficient 26 points on 12-from-17 shooting and eight rebounds. Chris Kaba came off the bench and added some scoring punch for Keilor. Kaba accumulated his 16 points in just 15 minutes. Bradley Kelleher scored 11, including some vital baskets late in the contest. The workload was otherwise fairly evenly spread. Keilor will look to build on the win in a busy upcoming double header weekend. The Thunder will travel to Hume City Broncos on Saturday night before hosting Blackburn Vikings on Sunday. With the Thunder three games out of the top four with six to play, they are venturing into must-win territory. In the women’s state championship, Keilor Thunder was on the receiving end of a heavy 92-70 defeat to top-of-the-ladder Werribee Devils at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday. After a competitive opening quarter, the Thunder conceded a whopping 36 points in the second period and never recovered. Aneta Bandilovski was potent for the Thunder, scoring 21 points. A’Lexus Harrison did a lot of the heavy lifting inside the paint with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Erin Bollman scored 19. With a 10-4 record, the Thunder still remain comfortably inside the top five. Keilor will be looking to bounce back on their short trip to Hume City Broncos on Saturday evening. Lance Jenkinson

Deer Park works hard in the weather for a tough win Deer Park not only had to contend with Caroline Springs, but also treacherous weather in a 39-point win in the Western Region Football League division 1 match at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. The Lions worked hard to create separation from the home side on the scoreboard, but just as hard to negotiate the wet and wild weather. “I haven’t seen rain like that for a long time,” Deer Park coach Marc Bullen said. “You could hardly see two foot in front of you in that last quarter.” Deer Park went to the main break with a 15-point lead, but were not playing the kind of football to enthuse Bullen. “They challenged us in the second quarter and at half time I put a bit of pressure on a few players to stand up,” he said. “We got the job done at the end of the day, so it was good.” In-and-under ball winner Kevin Klix thrived in the elements. “Young Klixy was the small, dynamic player on the park,” Bullen said.
“He was the best player on the ground.” Ruckmen and key position players are usually hindered by the slippery conditions, but Scott Greenhough seemed to thrive in it. “He loves these sort of wet dour days,” Bullen said. “He butters up from his ruck contests and he gets the footy out off the deck. “He’s a real good asset for us in these conditions.” Two Jacks – Purton-Smith and Redpath – found some form for Deer Park. Purton-Smith is one of the chief playmakers of the side and an on-field leader. Redpath, a former Western Bulldogs forward, is still finding his feet at the level, but produced one of his most energetic games of the season. “He [Redpath] played as a high forward today and kept presenting,” Bullen said. “He got to some key contests on a tough day. “He’s starting to move very well, which is good for us because we need him firing heading into the tough run of games that we have.” Kwame McHarg was the only Deer Park
player with multiple goals, kicking three. On a day when finding a way to goal was tough, Caroline Springs only managed one major. Deer Park will face Sunshine Kangaroos at John McLeod Oval on Saturday with key players Chris Stewart and Jake McKenzie edging closer to returning from injury. The Kangaroos will enter the game on the back of a 36-point loss to ladder leader Spotswood at Kinder Smith Reserve. Albion went down by 169 points to Werribee Districts. In division 3, Albanvale and Braybrook played out a draw at Robert Bruce Reserve. When the full time siren went, the Cobras and the Brookers were locked on 46 apiece. Sunshine Heights continued its stellar form with a one-point over Glen Orden at Ainsworth Reserve, while North Sunshine went down by 100 points to Tarneit. Lance Jenkinson

Saints on a winning roll By Lance Jenkinson St Albans is all the rage in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Saints have emerged from the shadows and into the spotlight as genuine finals contenders. Saints first-year coach Perry Meka had trust in his team from early in the pre-season, but doubts remained within the playing group only a matter of a month ago. That was understandable considering the Saints are coming off a four-win season in 2018 and have not featured in finals since 2014. Meka could sense his side shedding those doubts. After rolling through bottom-of-the-ladder Albion, St Albans did the unexpected – beating six-time defending champion Deer Park and Altona, top of the ladder at the time, in consecutive weeks. The Saints rounded out an incredible month on a wet and wild Saturday with a 97-point win over Point Cook at Kings Park Reserve. “I’ve always had belief in them, but I’m not sure the players had the belief in what they can do,” Meka said. “The beauty of that [wins over Deer Park and Altona] is, they’re starting to believe they’re capable. “I’m saying to the boys, all that you’re telling me now is that you are capable, now you have to execute it … and they are.” St Albans made a huge splash last week with the addition of West Coast Eagles 2006 premiership star Sam Butler. Butler recently moved to Melbourne from Perth to be with partner Natalie Medhurst, who plays for Collingwood in the Super Netball competition. Butler carefully considered his playing options and felt the Saints would be an excellent fit. “It’s super for our footy club,” Meka said. “Not only does his record speak for itself at the highest level, but he’s a really good bloke. “When that opportunity came up and he shifted here, we said, ‘Why don’t you come down to the club and have a look?’ “To his credit, he did come down, trained a bit, had a look and came and watched us against Deer Park. “He liked what he saw and jumped on board.” Butler will be one of the most versatile players in the WRFL. In the AFL, the 33-year-old made his name in defence, both as a stopper who could play on talls and smalls and also as a neat user of the ball. But Meka will not pigeon-hole his new recruit. He can play anywhere – that’s the beauty of him,” Meka said. “He can play at either end, but we’ll also use him in the midfield.”

Sharks march to derby win
St Albans midfielder Marc Dawson announced his retirement to his teammates on Thursday night. (Mark Wilson)
While the past month has been a thrilling ride for St Albans, there was also a tinge of sadness with club stalwart Marc Dawson deciding to hang up the boots. The Saints’ 300-gamer announced to the playing group that he had played his last game in the memorable win over Altona. Meka offered Dawson that chance of a farewell game, but he declined. “He came to me on Tuesday and said, ‘I’m shot, I can’t get out
of bed on a Sunday morning [because of the physical toll of playing games]’,” Meka said. “I offered to play him this week against Point Cook for his last game and to make a song and dance about it, which he deserved. “But he said, ‘No, I had the biggest smile on my face when we beat Altona, a top team – I’m happy with that’.” Dawson will not be lost to St Albans, joining Meka’s coaching panel.
Hillside claimed bragging rights over local rival Taylors Lakes in Essendon District Football League division 1 at rain-drenched Hillside Reserve on Saturday. The Sharks were at their stifling best in the 54-point win, keeping the Lions to three goals. In attack, Hillside kicked a winning score in the wet. The Sharks finished with 11 goals, including an exhilarating six-goal final term when ground conditions were at their worst. Raafat Rachrache was the main source of goals for Hillside with four majors. Rachrache is the team’s second leading goalkicker for the season with 18 goals. Matthew Patane, Hillside’s leading goal kicker, added three to take his season tally to 22. Victor Micallef, Bevan Newell and Lachlan Rayner were the other stand-outs for Hillside. For Taylors Lakes, there were only single goalkickers on a tough afternoon at the office. While Hillside is in the finals mix, the Lions are way down in third last with just two wins from 10 games and under threat of relegation. Hillside will continue its finals push when it hits the road to play second-placed East Keilor at Overland Reserve on Saturday, while Taylors Lakes will be aiming to cause an upset when it hosts top-of-the-ladder Tullamarine at Lionheart Reserve. In premier division, Keilor secured a 71-point win over Glenroy to move to 10-0 for the season. In division 2, Burnside Heights was pipped by 11 points at home to Moonee Valley in a top three clash. Toyota’s new HiAce a safe bet By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Fifteen years is almost three lifetimes in motor car terms but that’s how long the previous Toyota HiAce commercial van was on the Australian market. Despite increased competition in recent years it’s been the top-selling van throughout that 15-year period and is sure to continue with the release of an all-new model. The most noticeable change with new HiAce is that it now comes in a semi-bonneted configuration that not only provides extra collision safety but also, allows the engine to be moved forward ahead of the front axle rather than under the cabin as in previous models. This provides improvements in cabin comfort, seating and ergonomics as well as greater stability and ride comfort. As before, the new HiAce comes in long wheelbase (LWB) and super long wheelbase (SLWB) lengths. These have been increased by 640mm and 750mm respectively with the overall length of the LWB now up 570mm to 5265mm and SLWB by 535mm to 5915mm. The increases are within the cabin, with cargo space unchanged at 6.2 cubic metres and 9.3 cubic metres. Model variants are two-seat LWB and SLWB vans, five-seat LWB crew van and 12-seat Commuter bus. As before, HiAce comes with the choice of petrol or turbo-diesel engines although they have been given significant boosts. The new 3.5-litre V6 petrol replaces the previous 2.7-litre four-cylinder unit with peak power up by 89kW to 207kW and maximum torque by 108Nm to 351Nm. Although down in capacity from 3.0 litres the new 2.8-litre turbo-diesel generates more power (up to 30kW) and torque (up to 150Nm) depending on the model variant.
AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE LWB Van 3.5-litre petrol: $38,640 (manual), $40,640 (automatic) LWB Van 2.8-litre turbo-diesel: $42,140 (manual), $44,140 (automatic) LWB Crew Van 2.8-litre turbo-diesel: $47,140 (automatic) SLWB Van 3.5-litre petrol: $48,640 (automatic) SLWB Van 2.8-litre turbo-diesel: $52,140 (automatic) Commuter 2.8-litre turbo-diesel: $67,140 (automatic) Commuter GL 2.8-litre turbo-diesel: $70,140 (automatic) Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Toyota dealer for drive-away prices.
The new 12-seat Toyota HiAce Commuter. (Supplied)
The two-seat LWB vans get the option of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic while the SLWB vans and Commuter are auto-only. With its larger cabin, the interior of the new HiAce is a much more appealing place for long-suffering drivers. Access is easier, there’s a lower seating position with height-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel with controls for the audio, infotainment and cruise control systems and a variety of storage areas.
Importantly, new HiAce comes with a range of Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance features including pre-collision safety system with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection; lane departure alert with steering assist; road sign assist (certain speed signs only); auto high beam; blind spot monitor; rear cross traffic alert; reversing camera; front and rear parking sensors and up to nine airbags. Infotainment features are now right up to date with the latest generation multimedia system. Displayed
