A tale of two donations

(Marco De Luca)

Mother and daughter Sarah and Caitlin Hall have teamed up to cut off their ponytails and raise money for the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Sunshine. After witnessing a friend cut off her hair, Ms Hall said Caitlin, 11, was inspired to follow in her friend’s footsteps. “Caitlin has been growing her hair for quite some time and a friend of hers at school did the World’s Greatest Shave a few months ago and Caitlin was inspired by that,” she said. The pair researched many different organisations that would accept donated hair, until they came across a charity that was a perfect fit for them both. “We came across Sustainable Salons Australia, which are one of many charities that take hair,” Ms Hall said. “This particular one looks after not only young people’s hair, but also old people’s hair like mine.” The pair want to go one cut above and raise money for a charity. “Our goal is a massive $3000. We set a big target. I don’t know if that was a wise thing or not. “We’ve suggested we’d like for the money to go to Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital because it’s a new hospital. It fits with us, being a mother and daughter.” To donate: bit.ly/2ZrPDs6 Jessica Micallef

Tip growth gets go-ahead By Tate Papworth The Brimbank council and residents have slammed a decision to approve a large expansion of the Melbourne Regional Landfill at Ravenhall. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last week approved an additional seven cells at the landfill which will allow the site to operate until about 2036. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the decision means the west will continue to be the dumping ground for greater Melbourne. “We’ve been fighting against this landfill

expansion for almost two years now. Our community is extremely opposed to the expansion of the Ravenhall tip, as is this council,” Cr Congreve said. “This is particularly concerning because it doesn’t encourage the development of an environmental sustainable solution to managing waste in the medium to longer term. “Expansion of the landfill also means we could be seeing rubbish trucks travel across metropolitan Melbourne and Brimbank to the tip, impacting on our city for years to come.” The council has been appealing the tip expansion since 2017. It says the expansion

doesn’t align with state government policy on the grounds that it could potentially divert investment from alternative forms of waste disposal and innovation. “On behalf of our community and the west, we’ve been fighting against a plan to extend a rubbish tip that already has existing problems, and which would lock the area into using obsolete and ineffective modes of waste disposal,” Cr Congreve said. “The tip expansion would reinforce Victoria’s reliance on landfills … over the long term, which is contrary to future direction for waste management in Victoria.” Mayfair Electric Recliner Lift Chair from

Stop the Tip lead campaigner Marion Martin said the community had been let down. “It’s very disappointing. We’re still going through it all and our lawyer is currently looking over it,” Ms Martin said. “There’s a lot of conditions [in the approval]. I don’t have much confidence in the EPA anymore, but hope it does its job enforcing the conditions.” Brimbank council and the Stop the Tip Group said they would review details of the decision before determining further options. “Were hopeful we’ve still got somewhere to go,” Ms Martin said.

Flu cases top 500 in Brimbank By Laura Michell More than 500 Brimbank residents have been diagnosed with the flu so far this year. The Local Government Areas Surveillance Report of the Department of Health and Human Services reveals that as of June 20, 534 people in Brimbank had presented with the flu. The report says 366 people from Brimbank were diagnosed in 2018. Statewide, 18,500 people have been diagnosed with the flu this year.

Western Health said the flu season had arrived earlier than usual, with an increased number of people a day presenting to Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department with flu-like symptoms since the start of June. The last bad flu year was in 2017, when 35 people a day presented to Sunshine’s emergency department. September is considered peak flu season. The hospital has recorded an increase in the number of children being treated, with many needing to be transferred to the Royal

Children’s Hospital for treatment of severe illnesses. Deer Park’s IPC Health has recorded an increase in the number of people receiving flu vaccinations, as well as a rise in the number of people being diagnosed early in the season.

The latest figures come as Health Minister Jenny Mikakos warned people to stay home from school or work if they were suffering from the flu. “This is how the flu is spreading across the community,” she said. “It’s really important that people take heed of those simple precautions.” Ms Mikakos said there were nine times more confirmed flu cases in Victoria this year than the same time last year. To date, 31 people, including three children have died from the flu this year.

Free classes no stretch for studio A Derrimut yoga studio is hoping to stretch new participants to their limits with a series of free classes. Carja Yoga is celebrating international yoga day and will be hosting free classes all day from Friday, June 28 to Sunday, June 30. Free classes for beginners and children will also be held from the beginning of July. The studio recently celebrated its second birthday and founders Caroline, Jennifer and Rodrigo say it’s been a dream come true. The three founders grew up in the western suburbs with humble beginnings.

Sisters Caroline and Jennifer, miserable and feeling imprisoned by their full-time corporate careers, decided to travel to India as an escape from life’s challenges. There they discovered yoga and from then on harboured the ambition to open a yoga studio, to serve the community. They say there are no barriers to participation and Nancy Evans, 74 years old, is true testament to that. “I knew I had to start somewhere. I am more flexible and have greater range of motion,” Ms Evans said.

“I can move in ways I couldn’t before. I always feel amazing and so good after a class at the studio.” Bec Hingert, a survivor of lymph node and liver cancer said yoga helped her healing process. “Since starting yoga, my family and friends have noticed a significant change in me for the better,” she said. For more information on the classes visit: www.carjayoga.com or contact 0435 370 790.

Brimbank’s chances of becoming the Australian headquarters of the national women’s soccer team have been given a boost. Announcing a shortlist of candidates, Football Victoria last week nominated Brimbank, Casey, Darebin, Maroondah and La Trobe University in Bundoora as preferred locations for the Matildas. The process will now move into discussions with the respective municipalities as part of a feasibility study. Concept plans and cost estimates will be developed once a preferred site has been identified. Football Victoria chief executive Peter Filopoulos said the facility would be a game changer for women’s soccer in Australia. “Just as the Matildas are doing Australia proud on the world stage, it’s incumbent on us as a nation to provide them the high-performance home base that will help them stay at the forefront of international football and ensure the game keeps developing the stars of tomorrow,” he said. “The creation of a national Home of the Matildas will go a long way towards helping the game in Victoria meet our stated objective of 50/50 gender participation by 2027.” In March, Brimbank council rejected a proposal to include $300,000 in its draft budget to conduct “a number of studies and planning investigations” for the headquarters. At its April meeting, Cr Margaret Giudice said the council wasn’t in a position to carry out the work suggested. Tate Papworth

Protest hits the streets

Crime rises in Brimbank

By Tate Papworth “How many more people have to die before this is fixed?” It’s a question Albion locals have asked themselves for years as they fight for safety improvements along a fatal stretch of road. Fed up residents last week took their anger to the street, with about 70 people protesting at the corner of Hulett Street and Ballarat Road. This year, two pedestrians have been killed and a third is on life support after being hit by vehicles between Hulett Street and the M80.

Brimbank’s crime rate has risen by 9 per cent in the 12 months to March, driven by a surge in thefts. Latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency reveals 19,187 offences were recorded in Brimbank in the year to March, up from 17, 619 offences in the 12 months to March 2018. Thefts rose 15 per cent as a result of increases in thefts from retail stores and motor vehicle thefts. In the 12 months to March, more than 740 motor vehicle thefts were recorded, up from 685 in the previous 12 months. Thefts from retail stores rose 22 per cent from 714 offences in the 12 months to March 2018 to 869 offences in the 12 months to March 2019. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said the increase in offences could be attributed to police work. “We can continue to prevent and detect crime,” he said. Crime Statistics Agency Data also revealed a 16 per cent rise in family violence incidents in the year to March, with 2839 incidents recorded. “We don’t want to be attending one family violence incident and we are trying to stamp it out. We know it is a huge problem in society,” Deputy Commissioner Patton said. Statistics also show a drop in burglaries, with 1523 offences recorded in the 12 months to March, down from 1567 in the previous reporting period.

Too many people have been injured or killed on that road - Sergeant Andy Oakley

’’

VicRoads, Brimbank Police, the Brimbank council and residents all agree that the stretch of road is unsafe, but safety improvements could still be at least a month away. As previously reported by Star Weekly, VicRoads has earmarked three intersections along the stretch of road for safety upgrades. Despite acknowledging it as a hazard, upgrades have not been funded. VicRoads chief executive Robyn Seymour told 3AW last week that safety fixes are coming, but not immediately. “Obviously infrastructure upgrades take quite a lot of time … I have referred this matter to our experts in our safe system infrastructure group to look at what we can do short term to manage the risks in this area until we can get the longer-term solutions in place,” Ms Seymour said. “We’ve got to look at what we can do as quickly as possible. I’ve given them a month to

Some of the protesters hold signs at the corner of Hulett Street and Ballarat Road. (Luke Hemer)

look at what we can do and then we’ve got to develop long term solutions that make sure that these kinds of fatalities … is prevented.” Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Andy Oakley has been a leading voice in calling for safety upgrades along the road. Sergeant Oakley told Star Weekly that lowering the speed limit would be a good

starting point. “Too many people have been injured or killed on that road,” he said. “Until it’s fixed, the speed limit needs to be reduced - 80km/h is fast. Given the number of pedestrians on the road, until there are sufficient crossings and breaks in traffic, it needs to be no higher than 60km/h.”

A cracker of a show Once upon a time, a much-loved ballet came to Keilor. As part of school holiday festivities, Keilor Central is joining the The Australian Ballet to bring costumes from its Once Upon A Time: The Nutcracker production to the centre. Assistant marketing manager Daniela Valencia said the display would complement the centre’s dance-themed holiday activations. “The Australian Ballet is Australia’s national ballet company and they’ve been kind enough to lend us these costumes,” she said. “We’ve also partnered with the Keilor studio dance school to do some classes so it all ties in nicely. “It’s a great opportunity to learn something different.”

Children will also have the chance to show off their creative talents. “We’ve got a colouring competition … kids can go to our website, download the template and then all they have to do is drop it off to the barrel in store,” Ms Valencia said. “The winners, which will be drawn on July 12, get tickets to Once Upon a Time: The Nutcracker, which is showing in Melbourne on Nutcracker September 19. “It’s really exciting … we hope the customers love it as much as we do.” The exhibition will run until July 12. Straw argument for city

Businesses suck it up to save on litter

By Tate Papworth Thousands of single-use plastic straws and cups have been diverted from landfill to help teach local students about sustainability. The plastics were collected from restaurants in the Sunshine CBD, as an extension of the Sunshine Business Association’s Straws Suck campaign. Not-for-profit student-run social enterprise group Enactus collected the plastics and delivered them to Sunshine North Primary School where grade 5/6 students took part in a workshop to re-purpose them – creating terrariums.

‘‘

It was a great experience for the young people

’’

- Carson Luk

Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said it was a fantastic way to continue to rid the precinct of single-use plastic. “The traders were already aware of the Straws Suck after we visited them earlier in the year and provided them with free paper straws and dispensers,” he said. “Going from store-to-store with Enactus and asking for participation in this project was an extension of this.” The students were also able to make some money out of the venture. Students held a stall at the Sunshine Business Association’s Friday Street Market where they sold their terrariums. “The market was a huge success,” Mr Luk said. “They [terrariums] sold out in 40 minutes

and raised around $250 along with donations. “The money raised will be channeled back into Sunshine North Primary School’s sustainability program.” Mr Luk said it was fantastic to see Brimbank’s youth embrace sustainability in a practical way. “It was a great experience for the young

people to practice social entrepreneurship by selling something to the public that they made themselves,” he said. “At one stage we had the student sustainability representative from the school talking to the sustainability co-ordinator of the Brimbank council about their roles and actions to date on plastic reduction in Sunshine.”

The Sunshine Business Association may think straws suck, but its sustainability program does anything but. The push to rid the business district of single use plastic straws has landed the association and the Friends of Kororoit Creek a nomination for the Sustainable Cities Litter Prevention Award 2019. But Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said it was only one step in a broader strategy. “The Straws Suck campaign is but step one of a broader plastic-free Sunshine campaign,” he said. “Other stages will be, single use plastic bags and single use take away containers.” The campaign was launched in 2018 and aimed to change the way businesses operated to reduce litter. Single use plastic straws were phased out and replaced with paper straws in more than 80 cafes and restaurants throughout the precinct. The campaign also involved installing anti-litter bin wraps on more than 100 rubbish bins. Mr Luk said the campaign has so far been a success. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised with the support from major stakeholders including the traders, the Brimbank council, Friends of Kororoit Creek, Enactus, the local schools, and the community.” Tate Papworth

Locals rubbish system

Funding bonus for St Albans primary school

By Tate Papworth Derrimut residents say they have no faith in online reporting systems after illegally dumped rubbish has turned the side of Mt Derrimut road into a makeshift tip. One resident said she reported the rubbish, dumped before the Western Freeway overpass on Mt Derrimut Road, but “nothing much happened”. “It just kept getting worse and worse. At the beginning it looked like a hidden pile, but each time I drove past it got worse,” the resident said.

‘‘

St Albans East Primary school will soon have bigger and better classrooms. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman visited the school last week to announce $8.7 million funding to build a new permanent modular building. Ms Suleyman said it’s a major win for the St Albans community. “We’re ensuring local students have the best facilities, our classrooms have the best teachers and every child is given every chance to succeed. “Local families will soon enjoy great new facilities at St Albans East Primary School.” St Albans East Primary School principal Paul Busuttil said it’s more than just a building. “This funding will change the lives of our students and community,” he said. The funding was allocated in this year’s state government budget as part of a $5.6 billion commitment to upgrade 1400 school buildings and fund about 14 new schools scheduled to open by 2021. Victoria University Secondary College is also set to benefit with $23.95 million allocated to deliver a science tech engineering arts maths building, a learning village building, a performing arts building, and a food building.

The average person doesn’t know which agency is responsible - Resident

’’

“Over a period of a few weeks it went from big black bags, then tyres, then children’s toys and even furniture dumped there.” The resident said she reported the matter to the council but was told it wasn’t on council land. She then went to VicRoads, lodging a complaint both on the agency’s website and Facebook page, but has not had a reply. Star Weekly contacted VicRoads last week and was told the site is under the jurisdiction of Major Road Projects Victoria. After Star Weekly brought the problem to their attention, the Western Roads Upgrade team inspected the site and said the rubbish would be cleaned up this week. Major Road Projects Victoria project director Frank De Santis said they would also repair damaged fences and investigate further security measures to limit public access. “Our Western Roads Upgrade maintenance team regularly inspect roadside areas to keep

them safe for all road users and will continue to do so over the next 20 years,” Mr De Santis said. “Our maintenance team is cleaning up this site at Derrimut and investigating further security measures to avoid further instances.” However the concerned resident said the system was too convoluted. “The average person doesn’t know which

agency is responsible for each piece of land,” she said. “It means in most instances we’re not sure how to lodge a complaint. If we log something thinking it’s council land and it’s not, then the problem won’t be fixed. “What’s the point in having the service if people don’t know who to tell?”

Dying laws bring ‘peace of mind’ By Tate Papworth Ardeer resident Nia Sims says Victoria’s new assisted dying laws will change her life. As of Wednesday last week, terminally ill Victorians are able to begin the process of accessing voluntary assisted dying. Ms Sims, a leading voluntary assisted dying advocate, said she was relieved. “This law is about peace of mind,” she said. “I may not need to use the medication, but just knowing it is at hand will make it easier for me to live with much less anxiety.”

‘‘

Just knowing it is at hand will make it easier for me - Nia Sims

’’

Ms Sims has been living with a severe form of rare autoimmune disease scleroderma for more than 20 years. “The ability to choose a gentle death gives me a new peace of mind that I won’t have to suffer a prolonged, traumatic death,” she said. “It’s not something I expect a great number of people to

want to access, but it’s extremely important to those who do.” The medication will not be easy to access – Victoria’s voluntary assisted dying model is described as the world’s most conservative. A person can only gain access if they meet all of the strict eligibility criteria, make three clear requests and have two independent medical assessments that determine they are eligible. Furthermore, the conversation must always be started by the patient. Medical practitioners who raise the topic will be subject to unprofessional conduct investigations.

Plunge in for big fun It may be the middle of winter, but Watergardens Town Centre wants you to join its school holiday pool party. The centre will introduce an inflatable pool with a difference – instead of water, it will be filled with balls of fun. Inflatable pool toys, shapes, beach balls and a host of other fun items will be included, with all children invited to dive in on the fun. The pool will be open from Saturday, June 29, until Sunday, July 14. Located outside Woolworths, near Bakers Delight, the pool will operate from 10am to 3pm daily and until 6pm on Fridays. Centre management said the Play Pool would be the perfect backdrop to capture some great snaps of the kids having a ball and an ideal spot for parents to park their prams and take a break. While fun and even selfies are encouraged, there are a few ground rules.

BE

A maximum of eight children will be allowed in the pool at one time and children are not to be left unsupervised. Participants must also be 100 centimetres tall or more. Details: watergardens.com.au/play/events/ the-play-pool-19 Tate Papworth

It can also only be accessed by adults with decision-making capacity who are suffering and have an incurable, advanced and progressive disease, illness or medical condition that is likely to cause death within six months. Ms Sims said some of the safeguards were disappointing. “We’ve got to start somewhere, but for those who supported the law it was disappointing to see the life expectancy criteria drop from 12 months to six,” she said. “Accessing this isn’t a quick process – it can take weeks as it is.”

MY BRIMBANK Kaye McKenner, who has worked at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School for 38 years, is retiring from her business manager role. She reflects on a remarkable journey with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I lived a large part of my life in Albion and now I live in Derrimut. I’ve also worked at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School for over three decades. What’s kept you in the area that long? The sense of community. We’ve always been involved in sports and the local sporting clubs in Brimbank are wonderful. It’s also really close to everything, with the city not far at all. I hear you’ve worked at St Peter’s Catholic Primary School for 38 of its 40 years. (Joe Mastroianni)

I have. I’ve been very lucky. I can’t say much more other than it’s a lovely little school. You would have seen it evolve a lot. It certainly has. When I first started, it was mainly service families because you had the army and navy nearby. When they closed, enrolments dropped a bit, but over time they’ve come back up. The buildings are also a lot different. The facilities have evolved.

So after 38 years you’re calling time. How are the emotions? It’s bittersweet. I’ve enjoyed every moment here. As I said, it’s a lovely little school. I’m

going to miss the children and that interaction. They’ve always been such chirpy, happy kids, so I’ll miss coming in every day. What’s been the highlight?

Definitely the children. I’ve loved watching them grow up into wonderful people. It’s amazing to see some of the earlier ones come back with their own children. Some of them think I’ve been around forever.

Deer Park Residents’ Association’s dissatisfaction on the “poor” reply to its request for a return to an elected council in Sunshine will be aired at a meeting next month, the association president, Mr Ian Coussens said this week.

Melbourne Westend Market and the adjacent Building World are potential fire hazards, according to an official report by officers of the Metropolitan Fire Brigades Board and Sunshine Council. The report says there are insufficient means for people to escape from the buildings in a fire.

Brimbank ratepayers can expect to pay on average an extra $22 a year if the 1999-2000 council budget is formally adopted next month. It took the council just three minutes to adopt the draft budget at Monday night’s meeting.

Churches are struggling to keep up with the demand for their help as the number of people affected by the world financial crisis continues to rise. The numbers visiting St Albans the Martyr Anglican Church in St Albans asking for food and clothing have risen at least 20 per cent this year, but supplies are limited, Reverend Faith Johnston says.

Property of the week

SYDENHAM 1 Overton Lea Boulevard, 3037 Calder Real Estate Agents: 9307 0111

Price: $695,000 – $760,000

This property has at least three trump cards: a classic, beautifully presented residence; a prized location putting Watergardens Town Centre and station within a two-minute zip in the car; and a block of about 1140 square metres. The block, shaped in such a way that there’s space to erect a second side-by-side house, STCA, adds considerably to the attraction of the property – whether to add value or to luxuriate in the extra space. The open-plan layout includes no less than five living zones: a carpeted lounge 14 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 25, 2019

room with adjoining dining room; a casual meals space with bay window; a rumpus area with second bay window; and a sitting area. Wall paint is a creamy sandstone, carpet is grey, and grey roman blinds dress the living areas’ windows, while drapes and sheers appear in bedrooms. Everything is fresh, and large windows admit abundant morning and afternoon light. Neighbouring the laundry, the large kitchen has loads of cupboards in a shade

matching the walls, soft-grey laminate benches, a corner pantry, a dishwasher and stainless-steel wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop. Ranged along a north-heading hallway are the four fitted bedrooms, the main bathroom with the tub under a lovely big window, plus a separate toilet. The large main bedroom, with a split-system, has twin walk-through robes, and a dual-basin en suite with the luxury of a tub to soak away the day’s cares. Out back, a concrete patio is the spot

for a barbie, while a future pergola would provide an escape from the westerly sun. The yard has thriving lawn and is fenced off for security for kids and pets. A garden shed sits on the other side of that fence, an area also suitable as a dog run. Also on offer are ducted heating and cooling, CCTV cameras, electric roller shutters, a remote-controlled double garage, and solar panels currently on 68 cents a kilowatt rebate. Carole Levy

Within a five-minute stroll of Banchory Grove Grassland Reserve, this revamped residence packs a punch in the decor stakes, with a stylish palette of varying shades, a combo of on-trend furnishings and several designer lightfittings. The main bedroom of three has lovely floorboards that also make an appearance in the living area with gas log fire. The shared bathroom has full subway tiling and dual basins with exposed chrome pipes, a walk-in shower, plus cleverly placed greenery. The kitchen, with a stack of mid-grey cabinetry, has lovely splashback tiles in soft-grey, a 900mm gas cooktop and a lower-set wall oven beneath a microwave nook. A covered alfresco area looks out to a spacious lawn and there’s a side gate for backyard access. Included are solar panels and remote-controlled garage with internal access via the laundry.

Just 400 metres from Victoria University’s Sunshine campus and with schools and public transport at close quarters, this house is a good find for savvy investors. Three bedrooms have built-in robes, while a study retreat could easily be converted to a fourth bedroom. Timber floors lead from the front door into the living room, where there’s a wall heater surrounded by stone, and on to the adjoining meals area. The kitchen has a generous breakfast bar, timber cabinets and stainless-steel appliances. The bathroom is light and has plenty of room to add a free-standing tub. The backyard has a paved area that extends up to a vast, secure shed. An air-conditioner, a paved driveway, secure gates and security screens are extras. Sitting on about 650 square metres, this dwelling offers up plenty of options.

This solidly built house, within a two-minute car trip of St Augustine’s Primary School and close to parks and transport, has the good bones of its era underscoring a fresh look – particularly highlighted in the kitchen, one that any family cook will appreciate. The four spacious bedrooms are up top, along with main bathroom and powder room. Two bedrooms have built-in robes, one has a walk-in, and the main’s is a walk-through to the en suite. Views from a balcony are also on offer with the main bedroom. Beyond double doors, a foyer kicks off the entry level floorplan, with an open study next up then through to the spacious living hub. This has an exposed-brick archway in the carpeted sitting area, giving a nod to the past. The kitchen takes starring role here. It has a stack of crisp-white cupboards juxtaposed against expansive black stone benches and cherry-red glass splashbacks. A 900mm gas cooktop and underbench oven, plus a dual-drawer dishwasher are also on board. Out back, an undercover alfresco area combines with a paved area (perfect for popping up a market umbrella) and a good wedge of lawn and established plantings. The property also has a split-system and a remote-controlled double garage.

SPORT Van Hoon’s return adds promise to premiership plans

Jared Van Hoon will be returning to play with Sunshine next summer. (Damjan Janevski)

Sunshine has made a big splash in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 off season. The Eagles have re-acquired American utility Jared Van Hoon for next season. Van Hoon was one of the stars of the competition as a player-coach with Sunshine before returning home last year. Now he is back and Sunshine coach Stuart Clayton believes Van Hoon could be the missing piece in the team’s quest for a premiership. “He’s coming back to play with us and that might be the difference,” Clayton said. “We’re hoping anyway. “He’s one of them guys that will have an impact through his experience and we rate him very highly.” First and foremost, Van Hoon was a popular figure in his time at Sunshine. The Eagles rated him so highly to turn him from the club’s import player to a player-coach.

Van Hoon expressed his contentment with Sunshine at the time and it is no surprise he chose to return to the club. “He fitted right in when he was last at the club,” Clayton said. “He would’ve stayed for that extra year, but he had a partner at the time who wanted to go back [to America] for family. “He’s keen to come back now and is excited to play.” On the field, Van Hoon is a coach’s dream. He is an outstanding batter, a dominant starting pitcher and is strong defensively. There are so many strings to Van Hoon’s skillset. He is also a natural leader. With Sunshine in a premiership window, Van Hoon’s addition could be significant. “He’s a utility – he can play anywhere,” Clayton said. “He can play middle infield, he can play third

Sleepy Saints pay price By Lance Jenkinson The glamour and the riches of the FFA Cup national round of 32 have eluded the St Albans Saints. The Saints are disappointed to fall one step short of a potential high-profile meeting with an A-League club in the next round. The Kruni Razov-coached Saints were ousted from the knock-out competition in the seventh round with a 3-1 loss to Bulleen Lions at the Veneto Club on Wednesday night. “I’m very disappointed,” Razov said. “I’m more disappointed for the club and the boys. We deserved a lot more from that game, but we didn’t get it.” St Albans had a harrowing start to the game. The Saints trailed by two goals after the opening five minutes – and it could have been even worse. “We just fell asleep in the defence for the first two goals,” Razov said. “Bulleen also hit the post in the seventh minute as well. After that, it woke us up.” They Saints needed a steadying influence – they found it through midfielder Michael Grgic. The Saints slowly took control of possession and fought the rest of the half out well, but to no avail on the scoreboard. “After the very poor opening seven minutes, it was probably a 50-50 game in the first half,” Razov said. The second half was much better from St Albans. The Saints bossed the game for the most part and got rewarded with a goal to Ayodeji Omoboye in the 81st minute. Omoboye made a perfect run behind the Bulleen defence and latched on to a delightful cross from Joseph Monek to score. Adam Hodor was a spark off the bench for St Albans, while the physicality of Nana Yaw Otuo-Acheampong was crucial. Razov believes his side was unlucky not to be awarded two penalties in the second half. The Saints were also a little too wasteful at the end of their attacking moves. “In the second half, we were the dominant side and should’ve had at least one, but probably two penalties,” Razov said. “It just didn’t fall our way in the second half, but that’s what happens when you give away silly goals early in the game.” Bulleen clinched its victory with a goal from the penalty spot from Josh Knight. St Albans can now focus solely on NPL 2 west. The Saints are in contention for promotion, but slipped to third on Saturday after a 2-2 draw with Moreland City. David Stojic rescued a point for the Saints with an 88th minute goal. 40 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 25, 2019

Joseph Monek has been influential in attack for St Albans Saints. (Shawn Smits)

Razov could see the benefit of having total focus on the league, but would prefer the alternative. “I’d prefer it to be the other way and still be involved with both competitions,” he said. “We do have a lot of sore bodies.

“You would’ve had a semi-final in the Dockerty Cup and then you would’ve had to play the FFA Cup, so it’s an extra two games thrown in somewhere in the next six weeks. “It’s hard on part-timers, but it’s still disappointing to go out.”

base, pitch and he was one of our better batters in the middle of our line-up. “That’s something we missed last year, that one extra batter.” Meanwhile, after the reappointment of Clayton as coach, Sunshine wasted no time bringing back the coaching staff that took it to the finals last season. The Youngs – Gavin, Jordan and Jeremy – and Leigh Davis will be Clayton’s assistant coaches. Sunshine has managed to keep together the squad that performed so well last summer. The Eagles do not forecast wholesale changes, but have a couple of irons in the fire. “There’s a couple of players who have said we’d love to come over, but it all depends on clearances now,” Clayton said. Lance Jenkinson

Green Gully draws on its fighting spirit A 10-man Green Gully fought back from two goals down in the second half to draw 3-3 with Port Melbourne Sharks in a thriller in the National Premier League at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. Port Melbourne opened the scoring with a goal from Brody Taylor. You can always count on Alex Salmon to get Green Gully back in the game. The league’s equal most prolific striker, with 17 goals, equalised for the Cavaliers just before half-time. The second half seemed to be turning into a nightmare for Green Gully. Port Melbourne skipper Michael Eagar and Yuta Konagaya scored consecutive goals for the visitors. Green Gully went down to 10 men after a red card was shown to Matthew Breeze but Green Gully refused to give in. The Cavaliers began their comeback when Jonathan Bounas played a one-two with Jeremy Walker and powered his shot low and hard inside the far post. In the dying minutes, Salmon’s strike from the edge of the area made its way through a forest of legs and into the back of the net. Melbourne Knights are licking their wounds after a 2-0 loss to a new-look Dandenong City away on Friday night. Brendon Santalab was superb for City with a double. In NPL Women’s, Calder United handed out a 9-0 drubbing of Geelong Galaxy. Catherine Zimmerman fired in a hat-trick for United, while Angela Beard and Aleks Sinclair scored doubles. Calder will tackle Bayside United away at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Saturday. In Football Victoria men’s state league 1, Sydenham Park has taken over top spot after a 1-0 win over Whittlesea United at Keilor Lodge Reserve. Juso Julardzija scored the game’s only goal for the Reds in the first half. North Sunshine Eagles battered Keilor Park 4-1 to consolidate third place. Nick Epifano scored a double for North Sunshine. Westgate moved to within a point of top spot in men’s state league 2 after a 3-0 road win over Albion Rovers. Lance Jenkinson

Sunshine derby goes to great Heights in thumping win The battle of Sunshine has gone the way of Sunshine Heights. The in-form Heights took care of business with a commanding 143-point win over cellar dweller North Sunshine in their Western Region Football League division 3 clash at Ainsworth Reserve on Saturday. The Heights have won five of their past six matches to move back into the top four after a week on the outer. Sunshine Heights’ victory was set up with a scintillating 12-goal-to-nil second quarter. The Heights ran rampant after quarter-time and kicked 19 of the last 20 goals for the match. Damien Farnfield’s team had 45 scoring shots to seven, underlining the one-sided nature of the derby. Albanvale has made a statement in the top-of-the-table clash, becoming the first team to beat Glen Orden this season. The Cobras were resolute defensively, holding the Hawks to just five goals in a 50-point road win. Justin Brook

Leo Eliepa bursts away from the pack for Sunshine Heights. (Mark Wilson)

was named best-on-ground for the Cobras and Graeme Catterall kicked three goals. Braybrook recorded a 74-point win over Wyndham Suns, but dropped out of the top four

on percentage. Paul Cutajar-Milosev kicked seven goals for the Brookers, taking his tally to 46 for the season. Bradley Busuttil added six. In division 1, St Albans has become a giant killer in the past two weeks. A week after taking down reigning premier Deer Park, the Saints ended ladder leader Altona’s six-game winning run. The Saints claimed a 10-point victory at Kings Park Reserve that will instill a heap of belief into the Perry Meka-coached side. Benjamin Said was once again dangerous inside 50 for St Albans, kicking five goals. Said sits second on the top-flight goalkicker list with 37 goals, just four behind Deer Park spearhead Jase Perkins. Deer Park put a stop to its two-game losing streak with a 126-point win over newly promoted Point Cook. Perkins was on fire for the Lions with 10 goals, while Kevin Klix added five. A rough start hurt Caroline Springs dearly

in an otherwise competitive 58-point loss to Spotswood. The Lakers trailed by 35 points at quarter-time and never seriously threatened, but managed to avoid a blowout against one of the flag fancies. Sunshine was outplayed by Werribee Districts in a 60-point defeat. In division 2, there were only three games played after Manor Lakes forfeited its match against Wyndhamvale. Yarraville Seddon continued its hot form in the match of the day with a 42-point win over Point Cook Centrals. In other games, Parkside was too strong for North Footscray, winning by 39 points, and West Footscray got over the line by 18 points against Newport. In Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C, PEGS had a day to forget, losing by 92 points to Mazenod. Lance Jenkinson

Thunder rolls over latest win

City West Falcons goal defence Zoe Davies. (Shawn Smits)

Young Falcons stand up By Lance Jenkinson City West Falcons are the hottest team going around in western suburbs sport. Winning has become an addiction for the Falcons, with their record reading 13-0 in the Victorian Netball League championship division. The top-of-the-ladder Falcons won a heart-stopper 51-49 win over Southern Saints at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. No matter what team Falcons coach Marg Lind sends out – this one was full of youth due to the unavailablilty of three stars through representative duty – they are getting the job done. Lind was pleased to come away with a victory from a game that could have gone either way. “We had a very small window where we got a few goals up in the last quarter,” she said. “Other than that, it was pretty much goal-for-goal the whole game. “We were happy to get the win because we didn’t have Molly [Jovic], Jini [Tharjini Sivalingam] or Jane [Cook].

“We pretty much had our younger players on the court and I thought they did well to hold up under consistent pressure from Saints. They’re in pretty good form at the moment.” The main area of concern for City West heading into the game was the attacking circle. Cook and Sivalingam have been prolific goal scorers for the Falcons this season. Enter Uneeq Palavi, a young goaler who shone brightly in her first start. After shrugging off some initial nerves, Palavi finished with 49 at 88 per cent conversion. “That’s her first full game run for us in champ, so that was a really good sign,” Lind said. “She probably tried to do too much early in the game … in the second half she settled into the role well and started to really perform.” When the game was there to be won, it was at the other end of the court that City West gained its advantage, with a five-minute period in the fourth quarter turning the game in the Falcons’ favour. The game changer for the Falcons was goal keeper Sarah Szczykulski, who was able to break up play with solid defence and be a motivator with her voice.

“She had a five-minute patch where she got a bit more aggressive and was up and about talking to the others and being really positive,” Lind said. City West had to call on teenager Mel Oloamanu to play an important role at goal defence. Oloamanu replaced Zoe Davies, who received a knock to her nose. “She did really well for her first run in championship,” said Lind of Oloamanu. “She’s a good up-and-comer.” City West has opened a two-and-a-half game lead over the rest of the competition. Lind believes victories such as the one over Southern Saints are worth more than just premiership points. “Games like that are a real test of our culture,” she said. “It’s a really good window into what we’ve got to look forward to, but it’s also a window into what our vulnerabilities are. “The big positive for the club is we know the young ones have got the capacity now.” City West’s undefeated record will be put to the test when it faces a desperate finals-hunting Melbourne University Lightning at SNHC on June 26.

Keilor Thunder showed the gulf in class between the premiership contenders and the also-rans in the Big V basketball women’s state championship. The Thunder were merciless against bottom-of-the-ladder Warrnambool Mermaids in a 109-40 win at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday. Erin Bollman was the star of the show – the Thunder import finished with 30 points, 16 rebounds and nine steals in only 28 minutes of court time. Chloe Hildebrand continued her fine scoring touch with 19 points, while Aneta Bandilovski had a well rounded line of 16 points, five assists and five rebounds. Keilor is sitting fourth on the ladder with a 10-3 record, but it will be put to the test when it faces ladder leader Werribee Devils at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday. In the men’s state championship, Keilor Thunder’s woes continued as it slumped to a fourth straight loss. The Thunder was beaten 68-65 in a nail-biter against Hawthorn Magic at the Boroondara Sports Complex on Sunday. The fifth-placed Keilor is 8-9 and in desperate need of a win against Corio Bay Stingrays at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday night. Lance Jenkinson

Western Jets in fighting win Western Jets have moved into the NAB League top four after grinding out a seven-point win over Greater Western Victoria Rebels on the road at Mars Stadium on Saturday. The Jets held sway at every change to keep the Rebels at arm’s length throughout a low-scoring game. Cody Raak, Lucas Rocci and Joshua Kellett were the standout players for the Jets. Daly Andrews was the top ball winner for the Jets with 27 disposals. Archi Manton was the only Jets multiple goalkicker with two, as they shared the goals around. The Jets will ride a four-game winning streak into their clash with Calder Cannons at RAMS Arena on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson 41 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 25, 2019
