Triple treat needs help A young St Albans family is in need of a helping hand … or six. Irshad and his wife Shahid, both from Pakistan, have no family support in Australia and are struggling with newborn triplets and a three-year-old daughter. The triplets, girls Maheen and Sineen and a boy, Mohamed, are making good progress, however Irshad said it has become very hard to care for three babies plus a toddler. “I really need to return to work, but it is difficult leaving my wife on her own with such small children,” he said. “I drive a taxi, but I’ve only been able to do about three shifts of the past few weeks and it’s not enough.” He said it’s also taken a toll emotionally. “We just need some extra hands to help – my wife isn’t getting much sleep at all.” The Multiple Birth Volunteer Support Foundation, an organisation that helps families with multiple births who have little support, has come to the couple’s aid but needs more volunteers. Reward to catch a killer By Laura Michell Police are offering a $1 million reward in a bid to solve the cold case murder of a woman in St Albans more than three decades ago. Antje Jones, 34, was shot on September 15, 1981. Her body was found in her brother’s Theodore Street address about 3.20pm. Homicide Squad Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Rowe said Ms Jones was asleep when someone entered the house and shot her multiple times in her upper body. Ms Jones was in Melbourne as a witness in a court case for a car crash from several years earlier and was staying with her brother.

She had moved from Melbourne to Queensland to live with her parents and three-year-old son after divorcing her husband about a year earlier. Police announced in 1982 a $50,000 reward for information to help solve Ms Jones’ murder, but no information came to light. Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Rowe said Ms Jones’ ex-husband has always been a person of interest in the case. He said police believed more than one person was involved. Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said investigators believed the murder was targeted. “Over the years, we have followed up a

number of avenues of inquiry and we now believe one of our key persons of interest in the case may have organised for Antje to be killed. “Instead of returning home to her little boy, Antje’s life ended violently in Melbourne.” Detective Inspector Stamper said he was hopeful the $1 million reward would bring forward new information. “Thirty-seven years is a long time to keep a secret … someone who may not have wanted to provide information to police previously may now feel ready to do so.” Anyone with information about the murder is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 18000 333 000.

Brimbank, Melton up in smoke By Laura Michell Brimbank and Melton have the highest smoking rates in the west, new data reveals. Victoria University’s health policy think tank, the Mitchell Institute, has released new figures revealing daily smoking rates across Australia. In Brimbank and Melton, more than 17 per cent of adults are daily smokers. Brimbank is home to 26,921 daily smokers, while 17.690 people engage in the habit in Melton.

Hobsons Bay has a daily smoking rate of 16 per cent, while Wyndham and Maribyrnong’s smoking rates are at 15 per cent. Nationally, 14 per cent of adults smoke daily. The institute said national smoking rates have been on a steady decline since its peak in the 1970s when almost three quarters of Australian

men and one quarter of women smoked. Mitchell Institute health policy lead, Ben Harris said the local smoking rates were troubling. “We need to target and redouble our efforts to facilitate opportunities for people to quit,” he said. “We know that local factors are influencing the smoking rates. Where we live, where we work, when we left school, and who we know influences smoking. “We also know that the best way to stop children picking up the habit is to help

the adults around them quit smoking.” Mr Harris said governments needed to better target their advertising and health services budgets to communities where smoking rates remained high. “We know the Quit smoking messages, combined with information on packaging about disease caused by smoking is very effective in encouraging people to quit. Using local approaches and local knowledge could help make sure that all Australians are given the best opportunity to quit smoking and improve their health and wellbeing.”

None can match Jack’s devotion Jack Nunn is on a mission to better educate the community about Kororoit Creek. When Mr Nunn moved to Albion last year, he noticed a sign next to the creek at the end of his street advising that there was 30,000 years of Aboriginal history in the area. The sign got Mr Nunn thinking about the creek, its history and its benefits to the community, prompting him to arrange a citizen science project in the area. The project – Campfires and Science – will include talks from Wurundjeri elders about

how people used to live along the creek, as well as environmental DNA testing of the creek, drone mapping and a meal around the campfire. “The people who lived here 30,000 years ago would know more about what’s living in the creek than we do now,” Mr Nunn said. “We will monitor it to see if anything has changed in a year, two years.” Mr Nunn, who is founder of not-for-profit organisation Science for All, said the organisation would also partner with the

Friends of Kororoit Creek to restore the creek, carry out water pollution testing and plant trees. “I want to leave [the creek] better than I found it,” he said. “I want to make people aware and show them ways to get involved.” Campfires and Science will be held on June 29 at Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House. A Sydenham psychiatrist has been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours. Dr Samir Nicolas Ibrahim has been awarded a Medal of the Order (OAM) for his service to psychiatry and to the community. Dr Ibrahim has been a psychiatrist for 39 years and has practices in Sydenham and Bundoora. He is an international member of the American Psychiatric Association, and secretary of the family research and interventions section of the World Psychiatric Association. A fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists since 1997, Dr Ibrahim has served as a Victorian representative on the Family Violence Psychiatry Network Committee since 2014. Dr Ibrahim, who arrived in Australia from Egypt 25 years ago, said he loved helping people with mental health problems find their voice. “People with mental illnesses … they are not well appreciated in society,” he said. “I love working with black horses. It’s my hobby, not my profession.” He is a member the Coptic Christian community and a current lecturer at St Athanasius College. Dr Ibrahim was elected president of the Australian Egyptian Federation in 2017. “It was an honour to be elected because I was elected by the Muslims before the Christians,” he said. “It shows us not to look at religion – we are all human beings.” Laura Michell

Luca’s memory lives on By Tate Papworth Luca Sautchuk never took a breath in this world, but he’ll have an impact on the lives of people for years to come. Luca was born sleeping on January 2 this year at the Sunshine Hospital. He was diagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia at the 25-week gestation period. His mother Lauren said the news devastated the family.

“Luca had a hole in his diaphragm and his organs drifted up into his chest cavity, pushing his right lung near his shoulder, his heart to the right and leaving no room for his left lung to develop,” Lauren said. “I’d never heard of it before but it’s as common as spina bifida and cystic fibrosis. We began researching online and it was pretty grim reading the statistics and survival rates.” Lauren said she and her husband Chris took comfort in knowing they weren’t alone. “Finding out there’s other people who have gone through it, finding support groups, it’s comforting in a devastating time,” Chris said. Luca’s parents also took comfort in the time they got to spend with their son. They spent two days with Luca in a bereavement room, made possible with the assistance of a cuddle cot. “There aren’t really any words to describe how it [the cuddle cot] benefited us during such a tough time,” Lauren said.

“It allowed us to form memories with Luca and spend some time with him. We were able to live with him for two days as our son before we had to say our final goodbye.” Now they’re helping parents in similar situations. Lauren and Chris raised more than $6000 through a GoFundMe page and last week donated a cuddle cot to the Joan Kirner

Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Luca’s memory. “To be able to help someone else do the same with their child is really overwhelming, it means a lot,” Lauren said. “It was also amazing to see where the money was coming from, it wasn’t just friends and family, it was people all over the world who had been through a similar situation.”

MP backs Kealba battle Kealba residents fighting against a proposed development at the former secondary school site received a major boost last week. Kealba Residents Against Over Development members have been vocal in their opposition to plans for more than 200 townhouses and apartments at the Driscolls Road site. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman raised the matter in state Parliament last week. “Residents are concerned about the over development of this particular plan,” Ms Suleyman said. “As a local and former Kealba High student, I understand and share the concerns of the local residents.” The matter is with Brimbank council, which is expected to make a determination at its June meeting. Ms Suleyman urged the council to consider the community when making its decision. She said any development needed to fit in with the character of the community. “Many residents have submitted objections to Brimbank City Council,” she said. “This is an important and significant site for Kealba. “It needs to fit in with the character of the area and not adversely affect the day-to-day living of the Kealba residents.” Tate Papworth

Drug charges

A Braybrook man has been charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis, after police allegedly seized 660 cannabis plants from a Mullenger Road, property on June 5. The man, 28, was also charged with theft of power and possessing a prohibited weapon. A Bacchus Marsh man, 23, was also charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis and theft of power.

There’s an old adage – it’s a jungle out there. But for students at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College it’s a jungle in the classroom. The school’s sustainability team had 30 indoor plants delivered to the school, all in the name of science. Year 10 student Christine, a member of the sustainability team, said the plants were placed in one of the science labs and experiments are being conducted to assess oxygen levels, health and wellbeing, and productivity levels of students in the plant room, versus a controlled room. “Plants in classrooms show us that we can be sustainable, but they also increase oxygen levels, which we think will have a positive impact on the learning environment,”

Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault and road rage incident in Cairnlea on May 23 at the intersection of Furlong Road and University Boulevard, about 2.45pm. Green group’s ‘emergency’ call By Tate Papworth A group of environmentally-conscious residents are calling on Brimbank council to play a bigger role in the fight against climate change. The Brimbank Climate Action group wants Brimbank to join 22 other Australian councils in declaring a climate ‘emergency’. It’s part of a global online movement which has amassed the support of 597 councils. Once a council declares an ‘emergency’, councils develop their own action plans, which

are encouraged to identify local opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Conducting community outreach strategies, lobbying the state and federal governments to also declare an ‘emergency’ is also encouraged. Brimbank Climate Action co-founder Julia Collin said someone needed to lead the charge in order to enact change. “This all came about because a couple of us were chatting online about how we feel leadership is lacking at federal level on climate change. “There’s a real need for urgency at every

level of government across the community,” she said. “The Brimbank council has shown some leadership with things like greenhouse emission targets, which is great, but we need more – we’re calling on them to join the other 22 Australian councils.” The action group already has 44 members and plans to table its petition to council at its June meeting. “The council needs 20 signatures to accept a petition as valid, but we want to get 1000,” Ms Collin said. “It’s gone out on Facebook and we’re engaging the community with a few

other initiatives to spread awareness. We’ll be collecting signatures from friends, neighbours, sporting clubs, businesses – anywhere.” If the council declares a climate ‘emergency’, Ms Collin said meaningful action can then become a reality. “The first step is getting the petition up, but after that we want the community to really pull together to develop a climate emergency response plan. Young at heart Julie Zapasa believes everyone can learn new things about themselves and the world they live in just by listening to their inner child. The Melton artist is about to launch a new exhibition at the Sunshine Art Spaces Gallery in collaboration with fellow Melton resident Michelle Hoskin. Known as Childe, the exhibition is inspired by the spirit of the inner child. Hoskin’s works draw on childhood fears, the struggles of growing up and parenting, while Zapasa’s works are playful. Zapasa came up with the idea for the exhibition after selling some paintings about children at her last exhibition. She asked Hoskin – who is debuting her work – to join her and share her perspective as a parent. “For me, creating artworks have caused me to travel away from my inner child and

this exhibition brought me back. It was very emotional,” she said. Zapasa, who attended high school in Sunshine, said she never thought she would have the opportunity to showcase her work where she grew up. “I have been exhibiting and creating for 25 years, little did I realise I would be coming back to Sunshine,” she said. Shared experiences help heal By Ewen McRae John Naidu joined the Australian Army straight out of high school with the dream of seeing the world, and during a 15-year career he experienced all it had to offer. Across seven international deployments, Mr Naidu served at East Timor’s early elections, civil war in the Solomon Islands, helped earthquake recovery in Pakistan, as well as time in Iraq and the conflict in Afghanistan. “It was beautiful,” Mr Naidu said. “From the moment I joined to the day I discharged, I loved every moment.

“I saw the positive side of the world, the negative side of the world, I saw suffering in Iraq, Afghanistan, especially East Timor, I saw how little people survive on and how much people have. “I experienced a lot of variety of life in the 15 years I was in the army.” Mr Naidu started as a private in the infantry and moved up to lance corporal, specialising in reconnaissance. In mid-2009, while leading an operation in Afghanistan, Mr Naidu’s life took a turn. “I was a section commander at the time, and I lost one of my soldiers,” he said. “I had eight blokes under my command, and there was an incident with an IED [improvised explosive device]. One guy lost his life and another lost his leg. “That experience haunts me to the day. When I saw death that close, I had nightmares for a

while, and that incident is the one that changed me as a person, as a soldier, and everything else.” Mr Naidu returned to Australia soon afterwards, and was deployed just three

months later to Pakistan. But the close call in Afghanistan had changed him. “That sort of experience has given me a bit of survivors guilt,” he said. “As a section commander it was my duty to

bring my men back, and I didn’t. It was still fresh in my head, but I thought I was ready to be deployed again. “When I went to Pakistan I struggled a bit, because this time it wasn’t a war, it was more human, a humanitarian task, so I’d just come back from war and now I’m doing something totally different which is helping out people. “After that tour I didn’t feel good inside, mentally and everything. I started drinking a bit, having dramas at home, and a lot of other things, but luckily at that time I spoke up, and I was diagnosed with PTSD.” Mr Naidu discharged from the army in 2016, and settled with his family in Woodlea estate, near Rockbank. He became involved with the Caroline Springs RSL not long after. At 38, he is one of the younger veterans at the RSL, but he said the shared experiences has helped him adjust to his new life. “It was rough in the early days,” he said. “One minute I’m in charge of 60 soldiers, to now looking after the kids at home, it took a while to adjust but I really enjoy it now. “I was looking for belonging, and I realised there were more soldiers going through the same things that I was going through. Even though most of them are Vietnam veterans, they’ve fought the same mental war that I was going through, so they had that experience of dealing with it to talk to me about. “A lot of veterans struggle with anxiety and shut themselves away, so we’re really conscious about meeting up regularly and helping each other out. I’m a real people person so that is something I really enjoy doing, and it’s really important.” Mr Naidu helped with the design and construction of the Aintree war memorial, and now hopes to begin work in the customs or immigration sectors.

Madam discovers joy in writing By Alesha Capone Brothel madam Lily Yang has penned an autobiography detailing her childhood in China and eventual journey to Australia. Yang – who is madam of The Cherry Tree Garden in Williamstown North – says her book, Take Memories, Leave Footprints, “doesn’t actually dwell too much on being a madam in a brothel”.

Rather, the book details how a young Lily and her family were exiled to a village in far north China to be “rehabilitated” during the Chinese Cultural Revolution before going on to detail her experiences growing to adulthood. Yang, who lives in Caroline Springs, described writing the book as “a wonderful experience”. “Writing is a bit like reading a book in reverse – one thing remembered leads to uncovering other unremembered things,” she said. “That was the real joy I found in writing. “I was lucky, as well, because I had grown up with storytellers, especially my father and an old Buddhist lady in the village when I was around 10 years old. I would sit enchanted by the ‘word paintings’ and the legends of old China and its superstitions.” Yang has written two previous books, one of which is based on the true story of a young girl in Cambodia who escaped from child sex slavery and gets help from Yang. Yang said proceeds from sales of her books go towards the Sunlight Foundation, a charity

she established to provide funds to rescue, rehabilitate and educate victims of child sex trafficking gangs in Asia. Yang said she wanted to “speak out”, on the issue.

“I want to be a voice in my industry that says this is not right and it must stop,” she said. Yang said she believed what she does as a madam “is fun, necessary and helpful to society”.

MY BRIMBANK Kristine Bugeja takes pride in highlighting the achievements of Brimbank’s youth. The Youth Junction communications and marketing co-ordinator spoke with Tate Papworth.

I work at The Youth Junction, an organisation offering a range of support services to disadvantaged young people aged between 12-25 years. Approximately 50 per cent of those residing in the Brimbank municipality. What do you like best about the area? Brimbank is really vibrant and constantly evolving. The richness of culture, development of infrastructure, particularly around the train station area, allows for easy access to Sunshine. What could be improved? There are approximately 36,671 young people aged 12-24 years residing in the City of Brimbank. However, the relatively small population of young people involved in anti-social behaviour and criminal activity is unfortunately often highlighted and gives a very negative impression of young people. We continue to see poverty and trauma in the lives of young people, despite Brimbank enjoying gentrification, which is why we constantly improve our wraparound support services to offer relief to young people facing hardship and disadvantage. Tell us about your role at Youth Junction? I am the communications and marketing

co-ordinator. I’m responsible for the communications, partnerships and public relations engagement along with the effective management and awareness of our brand and profile. I co-ordinate our online presence through social media, community engagement and effective marketing strategies. I love watching the young people’s journey as they engage in our services and I am determined to capture their highlights and achievements as these good news stories build confidence in the community. Any exciting projects on the go? We are working towards updating some significant spaces within the Visy Cares Hub, including a refurbished kitchen and barista space called Homebase and a revamped interactive space right in the heart of the Hub, which will include digital screens, state-of-the-art furniture, plug-in capabilities for electronic devices, which are all designed to offer a contemporary multifunctional educational space for young people. When will that open? To launch our new spaces, we’re organising an event on Monday, August 12 from 11am-12.30pm at the Visy Cares Hub. This event will align with the International Youth Day with the focus on transforming education among other activities on that day.

On a mission to empower children and their families The early intervention specialist team from Melbourne City Mission (MCM) is bringing skill and passion in helping children with developmental delay or disability in the Brimbank-Melton areas.

“The children I work with benefit the most when the whole family and a support network are involved. We can make goals together, practise at home, at the park, at kinder – anywhere that works best.”

Early Childhood Intervention Services manager Sally Moore says the team is equipped to support children and their families as they work towards goals and milestones.

Lucy Rudge is a speech pathologist and key worker. She mentors families and educators, providing strategies that support children’s communication and development.

“The journey for families from diagnosis to accessing support can be quite overwhelming,” she says. “Our early intervention specialists offer support every step of the way.

“While some people think the main role of a speech pathologist is to help people to talk, we support many more aspects,” Lucy explains, “from developing attention and play skills to learning new vocabulary and problem-solving in social situations.”

“We work in partnership with children and families to put building blocks in place for lifelong learning and development.” MCM provides speech, physio and occupational therapy, as well as specialised teaching. Every family is matched with a key worker, such as occupational therapist Samara Mascarenhas, who grew up in Melbourne’s west and loves helping others. “It takes everyone being involved so we can support children in the best way possible – support during setbacks and celebrations when we achieve goals,” says Samara. “It’s so important to empower the whole family and grow everyone’s knowledge and skills.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for people with disability to access support, achieve goals and live a positive life. The NDIS roll out started in Melbourne’s west in October 2018. The scheme currently provides support for almost 6000 children aged under six in Victoria. SPORT Keilor on the right track to make finals Keilor has a better understanding of where it sits in the Essendon District Football League Women’s Premier division competition. Under a new coach and with two teams merging into one, the Blues were an unknown quantity heading into the season. They have shown though that they will be a contender, sitting second, with only two losses to an undefeated Aberfeldie. Blues coach Ron Sikora said they were getting a better understanding of where the team is at in terms of personnel and skill. “From a club point of view with new coaching personnel we knew it would take a few weeks,” he said. “We’re still going through all the players and knowing where they fit in the side.” Sikora said one focus this year had been changing the mentality away from the game just being a social outing. He said there was a great culture at the club,

but they wanted to take things to the next level. “It is different, but credit to the girls who are taking it on board.” Sikora said they had been working on a few areas that would help them close the gap with Aberfeldie. “Take away the start and it could have gone either way,” Sikora said of the second time they played the Gorillas. “That has now been our focus. We had a slow start against Westmeadows as well. “That was the focus against Hillside and we were able to rectify that. “If we meet them [Aberfeldie] again, who knows what will happen.” He said some players who were yet to secure their spots in the side were making sure they were putting in the extra work away from the group to try and secure their place. Falcons flying high in VNL City West Falcons have left a trail of destruction across the Victorian Netball League championship division over the first 11 weeks. The Falcons are a perfect 11-0 and their hot run of form is showing no signs of abating. Falcons coach Marg Lind has been impressed with the team-first ethos among her players that started to build on their run to the premiership last season. “This team gets along really well,” Lind said. “They’re quite connected as a group and there’s a lot of trust there. “They still have that connection we started to build last year and that’s strengthened a bit this season.” City West has long been a powerhouse of Victorian netball. The Falcons have built a reputation as a team that is meticulous in their planning and have the ability to execute to the nth degree on game day. In the latest win, a 66-31 drubbing of Casey Demons at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night, the players took it upon themselves to move mid-courter Molly Jovic into the attacking circle without notifying the coaches once the score blew out beyond 30. Past Falcons squads probably would not have thought about making a move without running it by Lind or one of the assistant coaches, but this team lives a little on the edge. “They enjoy a bit of fun, a bit of camaraderie and that’s what that was all about,” Lind said. “They’re quite entertaining as a group actually. They have a few moments when they go a bit silly and take some massive risks, but that’s usually when they’re 20 goals up.” You can bet the City West players will not be pulling any stunts like that next time they are on court. The top-of-the-ladder Falcons will feature in a match of the round blockbuster against Geelong Cougars at Eagle Stadium in Werribee this Wednesday night. Western Suburbs sit tight in a season up for grabs Not often will you find a team “happy” to be sitting third-last on the ladder at the Queen’s Birthday break in the Football Victoria men’s state league 2. Western Suburbs is in 10th place after 10 games, but still in a strong enough position to challenge for all that the league has to offer in what has been a remarkably tight season. You can throw a blanket over the first to 10 teams on the ladder with only seven points between them. Suburbs are not only comfortably seven points clear of the relegation zone, but they are still in the promotion hunt as they trail a bunch of inconsistent teams. Not only do the raw numbers help Suburbs, but their form has been superb in recent times. After losing their first four games, Suburbs have gone unbeaten in their past six, winning three and drawing three leading into the break. Suburbs assistant coach Nick Efthymiou is buoyed by where the team is placed in the standings.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this,” he said. “There’s usually a runaway team by this stage, but there isn’t this season.” While Western Suburbs lost its opening four games, it did so by extremely fine margins. With a new coaching staff on board, led by head coach Gary Groenewald, there was expected to be some early teething issues. Groenewald decided to give the established players first shot at making the senior team, which included last year’s reserves players. A heavy pre-season schedule included lots of experimentation with younger players, and as a result Suburbs entered round one slightly behind the eight ball. The experience gained by the younger players at the club will hold them in good stead should they be called upon this season. “What we did was invite all the reserves players from 2018 and gave them the opportunity to develop,” Efthymiou said. “We’ve got one of the best development

coaches going around in Gary Groenewald and he wanted to give them an opportunity. “We had 15 practice matches and exposed them to senior football, then on the eve of the season, we topped up and complemented our playing group with some senior boys. “We estimated it would take about six weeks for our plan to start working and now we’re seeing what the group is capable of.” Efthymiou is full of praise for the leaders who dragged Western Suburbs out of its early slump. Captain Goran Petrovski has led from the front, while Ricky Castro, Chol Nyok and Julian White are willing to guide the youngsters. Philip Ajao has been a fantastic addition to the front line. By Lance Jenkinson PEGS is approaching the most important phase of its Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C season – and the players know it. The battling Bombers are bottom of the ladder with a 1-7 record, so will be fighting for survival in the division in the second half of the season. While PEGS coach Dane Pound gave the team last Thursday night off training leading into the bye, the players did not clock off mentally or physically at the weekend. With most opposition clubs taking in a little bit of rest and relaxation, the PEGS players decided to use the match-free weekend to improve their fitness base. The team made a pact to keep up their standards over the Queen’s Birthday break following its gut-wrenching loss to Hampton Rovers in which it faded out late in the game. That sort of drop-off has been a regular occurrence for PEGS in recent times – a young side that competes hard for three quarters, only to run out of petrol late in games. The leaders want to change that trend and have called on the players to take it upon themselves to build on their fitness over the break so they can better run out games. “I noticed as a group after Saturday’s loss to Hampton, they were very disappointed,” Pound said. “They were actually furious with themselves – and that was a by-product of them and not me. “I’m trying to keep it as positive as possible because I know where they’re at and they’re playing some good footy. “But they were the ones that were like, ‘That’s not good enough’ … on the bye weekend, everyone has to log in to Strava, which is a team fitness app we’ve got, do three sessions, two minimum. “They understand that at this time of the year they can take advantage of the fact that some C-grade amateur teams might relax a bit and have this week off and kind of cool their jets a bit. We’ve identified this period as crucial.” PEGS will face a must-win game against third-last Ajax on June 15 at PEGS Sporting Fields after the break. This is your classic eight-point game for the Keilor Park-based Bombers – four points acquired to build some confidence and four points denied to a rival in the relegation mix. “We are really pushing the barrel up hill if we lose this next one,” Pound said. “It would be a really long road home. “If you want to avoid relegation, which is our aim at the moment, you want to be winning five or six games. Keilor Thunder will have a lot on its plate when it returns to the court in the Big V basketball men’s state championship this weekend. The Thunder, knocking on the door of the finals with an 8-6 record, will begin a double header weekend on the road at second-placed Casey Cavaliers (11-3) on Saturday night. If that was not tough enough for the Liam Glascott-coached Thunder, they will come face-to-face with runaway ladder leader McKinnon Cougars, who are 13-1, at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday.
