Winging it in welcome win A colourful creation by Furlong Park School for Deaf Children pupils has been voted as Brimbank’s favourite. Pupils from seven primary schools last year decorated a 1.2 metre-high letter from the word “welcome” as part of the council’s “Welcome. We are Brimbank” campaign. The sign toured Brimbank in December and the community was asked to pick its favourite letter. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said Furlong Park’s colourful “E” had struck a chord with the community. “Congratulations to Furlong Park School for Deaf Children for winning the viewer’s choice,” she said. Furlong Park School for Deaf Children teacher Andria Mavrikakis said the winning piece was a team effort. “Our students collectively decided to paint the letter ‘E’ in yellow to best capture the word ‘welcome’ because they agreed that the colour yellow signified warmth, fun, happiness and friendliness,” she said. “Our students decided on the butterfly to represent our unique school community, because a senior student discovered that the word or sign for ‘butterfly’ in Auslan is also the same hand shape for the word welcome,” she said. “This realisation made the decision to go with the butterfly design definite.” Tate Papworth

Diving into new pool plan By Tate Papworth Brimbank council is yet to receive funding for its ambitious $60 million redevelopment of the St Albans Leisure Centre, but plans are afoot to upgrade the municipality’s other leisure centre in Sunshine. Brimbank council has flagged plans for a $35 million redevelopment of the Sunshine centre, releasing a master plan for public consultation. The plan includes a staged implementation to enable works to be undertaken when money is available.

The six stages include an indoor warm water pool and hall ($9.7 million); indoor water play unit and hall ($6.9 million); front of house areas ($5.3 million); outdoor pool and grounds ($7.4 million); health and fitness expansion ($4.7 million); and first floor administration areas ($1 million).

Cr Sam David, who was part of the council that built the current pool, said the job done at the time was a mistake. “One of my bigger, perhaps regrets, in all my years as a councillor was the swimming pool in Sunshine,” he said last week. “We should’ve finished the jigsaw then, in reference to building something for tomorrow, but we built something for that particular time. “It’s good to learn. If you make mistakes, you have to try to correct them. “I’m very deeply supportive of building something for tomorrow and if we build it, we

have to build it to the best of all. This is what we haven’t done in Sunshine.” Cr Margaret Giudice, who was also part of that council, said it was time for an upgrade. “We built what we could at the time, under the advice that we had and the money that we had,” she said. “We all knew in our hearts that somewhere down the track, that leisure centre would have to be refurbished and this master plan does identify that. “There’s no reason why this city can’t have two fantastic leisure centres.”

Council takes aim at sex trade By Tate Papworth Private investigators will be hired to smash Brimbank’s illegal sex trade. The investigators will be employed to enter alleged illegal establishments with the intent of gathering evidence that proves sexual services are being provided. Brimbank council endorsed the bold plan at its recent May meeting. It is believed up to 14 illegal brothels are operating within the muncipality. Mayor Lucinda Congreve first raised the

issue at the council’s February meeting, stating it was a pressing issue across the community. Last week she said the operation of illegal brothels had been an “ongoing conversation with us since we were elected”. “Some of the primary concerns are the number – over 14 that I know of are allegedly operating – and the locations. “They’re across the road from schools, they’re in main streets, they’re across the road from parks. Some are in residential homes.” Cr Congreve said there are a number of concerns with the alleged establishments.

“Many of them are fronts – including people being asked to do sex acts that they’re not comfortable with, trafficking of sex workers, drugs, other illegal activities like money laundering etc.” A council officer investigation into possible options to deal with illegal brothels recommended a collaborative approach with other agencies and requesting more police resourcing rather than investigators. But Cr Congreve said the problem needed tough action and recommended an alternative motion to hire private investigaors.

“We have evidence that other councils … that by employing independent investigators, they had managed to close down 14 illegal brothels,” she said. “If we maintain the status quo we maintain the results we’re getting now.” Cr Margaret Giudice spoke against the motion and questioned the effectiveness of the option. “We are not law and order,” she said. Private investigators would cost $36,000 annually. Cr Congreve said if it led to the closure of multiple illegal brothels, it would be money well spent.

The next stage of Hampshire Road’s makeover has begun. A $1.6 million upgrade for the stretch of road between Hertford and Ballarat roads has been brought forward following state government funding. Upgrades will include traffic signals at Foundry Road, bike lanes in both directions, two raised pedestrian crossings across Hampshire Crescent and new street lighting. Work began in March and is expected to be completed by July this year. Temporary road closures will be in place, but some work will take place at night to minimise disruption. The final stage of the upgrades, which began in 2015 should finish in 2021. Construction on the final stage, which ranges from Bennett Place to Devonshire Road will begin in early 2020. Work was scheduled to begin sooner, but the Sunshine Business Association, traders and the council have agreed deferring the work would be best to avoid impacting on the Sunshine Lantern Festival and the busy December trading period. Cr Hedditch welcomed the latest update. “We have some deferments going on until after the festival in January,” he said. “I welcome that and think the ongoing progression and building of this particular street is vitally important to the presentation of Sunshine to all those investors who are going to come and consider putting their hard-earned into this particular area as we go forward with some of the major infrastructure investments.”

Bad start to flu season

New policy to tackle green canopy cover

By Laura Michell Almost as many Brimbank residents have been diagnosed with the flu in the first five months of 2019 as were diagnosed in all of 2018. Data from the health department’s Local Government Areas Surveillance Report reveals that as of May 23, 338 Brimbank residents had been diagnosed with influenza. The report shows that 366 people from Brimbank were diagnosed in 2018. The data comes as health professionals warn of an “unusual” Victorian flu season.

Victoria’s acting chief health officer, Angie Bone, told 3AW last week the state had recorded five times the number of flu cases compared to the same time last year. She said there have been 23 deaths from the flu in aged care, while three children have also died from the illness so far this year. “We’ve certainly got an unusual flu season… it started much earlier than we would expect,” Dr Bone said. Brimbank GPs have reported an increase in the number of people being diagnosed with the flu, prompting IPC Health to offer free vaccinations at its Deer Park clinic. Chief executive Jayne Nelson said IPC Health wanted to ensure as many people as possible were immunised against the flu. “Having the flu vaccination protects not just the person, but the people around them,” she said.

Brimbank council has endorsed a policy to make the west greener. At its May meeting, the council endorsed Living Melbourne’s metropolitan urban forest strategy. Living Melbourne aims to change the way people think about building, growing, and valuing Melbourne. One of the key features of Living Melbourne is the mapping of existing canopy cover across Melbourne. So far the mapping shows the west lags well behind Melbourne’s other suburbs. Cr Daniel Allan said the numbers were alarming, but there’s scope for improvement. “I was shocked to learn that the eastern suburbs have a canopy cover of 25 per cent. I looked at what we have in the west and it’s a dismal four per cent tree canopy cover,” he said. “But there is hope. There’s six different actions, which gives us the hope. By 2030 it’ll go from 4 per cent to more than double that to 9 per cent. “Ten years later, it’s projected to come up to 14 per cent and by 2050 it’s projected to be 20 per cent tree canopy cover.” The council said endorsing the strategy ties in with other initiatives such as the Greening The West partnership. Firey awarded for service By Tate Papworth Aviation firefighter Carl Costin is the consummate team man, but last week he was recognised for his individual efforts. Mr Costin has been named as Airservices Australia’s firefighter of the year. He was presented with the award at Melbourne Airport (where he’s stationed) during a ceremony last week. “I’m thrilled to receive the award,” he said.

“It’s funny to be presented with something as an individual when you’re usually working in a team in this environment and I’m proud of the fact I’ve worked with some pretty amazing people.” As an aviation firefighter, Mr Costin and the team respond to emergencies on and around the airport. “We run a specialised fleet of vehicles which are primarily focused on that aviation side of firefighting, but we also do the other side of firefighting which includes car crashes, fire alarms, cardiac arrest,” he said. “Here we respond to about 1800 calls a year – about four a day. Half of those would be medical calls. And the rest are fire alarms, car crashes and things of that nature. “When we look at an aviation full turnout, that might be once every two weeks, but the vast, vast majority of those are just to standby in case something happens, because there might have been a malfunction of a tiny part of the aircraft.

“Certainly those top-tier events don’t happen very often.” The award comes after Mr Costin played a role in implementing major changes. “We shouldn’t just turn up to work and do the bare minimum. It’s been a privilege to change a few things in the service,” he said. “One of the things we changed was what you

might consider a largely corporate-based logo on the vehicles to something that’s recognised a bit more as an emergency service. “And recently I’ve been part of changes with space methodology and how we work with breathing apparatus.” Last year Airservices attended nearly 7000 incidents and saved 18 lives.

Library closure to usher in a new chapter Sydenham’s library and customer service office will close from Friday, June 14, to Sunday, June 16, for building work. Brimbank council said the work would improve the library layout and help create more seating by maximising floor space. During the closure, customers will still be able to renew and reserve items, borrow eBooks and eAudio books and access electronic databases and resources via the online library. Services at the library will be reduced on Thursday, June 13, to help prepare for the work. Computers will be unavailable from 5-8pm on the Thursday. However the after hours book return chute will remain open throughout the work period. The due date for library items will also be amended so they will not fall due during the temporary closure. Brimbank’s other four libraries – at Deer Park, Keilor, St Albans and Sunshine – will remain open during this time. The council customer service centre at Sydenham library will be closed during this period. Carjacking arrest

A man has been charged following an alleged attempted carjacking in Taylors Lakes. Police were called to a carpark on the Melton Highway about 9.30am on May 21. Police were told a man with a hand gun had tried to enter a car. He was arrested a short time later. A 42-year-old man, of no fixed address, faces several charges including attempted aggravated carjacking.

Brimbank police caught an allegedly unlicensed rider speeding on an unregistered bike in Hillside. Police said the rider, a 53-year-old St Albans man, was allegedly driving at 128km/h in a 60km/h zone. Police said the man failed a roadside drug test. The rider will face court and his bike was impounded.

A St Albans man, 37, will face court charged with speeding and firearm offences. Police said the man was caught driving at 160km/h along Barnes Road, Altona North about 6.20pm on May 17. It is alleged the driver had a loaded handgun and a large quantity of cash. The man was also charged with committing an indictable offence while on bail. ‘Thug’ jailed for one punch attack By Laura Michell A man who punched a stranger in an “unprovoked” and “random” attack outside a Cairnlea laundromat has been handed a five-year jail term. Daniel Vaofusi, 26, pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious injury, following the December 3, 2017, attack outside the laundromat. The County Court heard that CCTV footage of the attack showed Vaofusi walking up to the victim and punching him to the face, knocking him to the ground unconscious.

The victim, Levent Babacan was not known to Vaofusi and was waiting outside the laundromat for a friend. The court heard the footage showed Vaofusi walking away from the victim before leaving the laundromat with his partner and chid. It also heard that Vaofusi had intended to “warn” Mr Babacan, after he thought he had peered through the laundromat window at his partner. Mr Babacan was taken to Sunshine Hospital where we has diagnosed with bleeding of the brain and a hemorrhage.

He was transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He spent two weeks in hospital and a further three to four weeks in a rehabilitation centre. In sentencing Vaofusi on May 17, Judge Paul Lacava said Mr Babacan would suffer the consequences of the attack for the rest of his life. He described the attack as a “sickening, violent punch”. “Needless to say, the injury you caused to Mr Babacan was life-threatening,” he said. “This was truly an unprovoked and wanton random

attack of a thug. Unfortunately violence of this kind, and of this level, is prevalent in public places, and this kind of offending serves as a reminder to everyone that it can have unintentional but catastrophic consequences.” Judge Lacava said he felt Vaofusi did not show true remorse for his actions. “I can see you regret punching the victim however I don’t believe this comes from remorse, it’s the situation [the punch] has put you in,” he said. Vaofusi was sentenced to five years in jail with a non-parole period of three years.

Birth of a new idea Sunshine’s Youth Junction is about to take part in the world’s biggest baby shower. The Brave Foundation, a not-for-profit charity for expecting and parenting teens, has recently expanded its services to the west, which includes the baby shower. Brave Foundation mentor Zen Tebeje said the initiative will run through May across the country. “The main purpose is for participants to embrace their motherhood,” she said. “There’s a gold coin donation to participate, so all money raised across the country will go towards teenage expecting parents to help put them on track with things like employment, education and things like that. “It’s really all about supporting young mums aged 13-25.” Ms Tebeje said there will be a number of fun activities and services available. “We’re going to celebrate mums,” she said.

“We’ll have games, lots of food, a few speeches and people sharing their experiences.” The shower will be held at The Youth Junction, Sunshine from 11.30am on May 30. Ms Tebeje encouraged everyone to attend and support the cause. “Everyone is welcome. We’re fairly new out here in the west of Melbourne and we’re looking to engage with the local community,” she said. Workplaces are also encouraged to hold their own shower to help the cause. Council puts pokies under fire By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has introduced a radical new policy to minimise gambling harm. Under the new policy, the council will charge clubs that operate poker machines on council land commercial rates and will seek limited term leases. The St Albans Sports Club and Green Gully Soccer Club are the two affected clubs, but both would be eligible for rent discounts of up to 80 per cent if they implement gambling

harm-minimisation measures. Cr Virginia Tachos said the council will continue to lobby for regulatory reform. “Council acknowledges that many clubs with EGMs also play an important social role – we want to work with current venue operators to reduce gambling harm,” Cr Tachos said. “We understand that gambling is a legal form of entertainment that is also regulated at both a federal and state level – this council policy focuses on a public health response, reducing the potential harm and risks to our

community.” Brimbank has topped the list of money lost to EGMs for 10 consecutive years, with $1.4 billion lost over the past decade. In the past financial year, $139.5 million – or $382,000 a day – was lost on Brimbank EGMs. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the high losses were unacceptable. “It is unacceptable that Brimbank continues to experience the highest electronic gambling machine – or EGM – losses in Victoria, particularly so when you consider that we

are also home to some of Melbourne’s most disadvantaged communities. “Through this policy – we will seek to reduce the harms that these losses inflict on our community.” There are 953 EGMs in Brimbank – the maximum allowable under state regulations. Brimbank’s new measures don’t go as far as the Darebin council, which has a policy to cut or decrease support provided to sporting or community groups if they operate or receive help from poker machine venues.

Young star on the rise A Taylors Lakes soccer star has amassed a glittering resume and is now dreaming of gold. Michael Prapas is a member of the Victorian seven-a-side Cerebral Palsy State Football Team, which was recently nominated as a finalist in the Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards after the nationals. Michael’s father George Prapas said it’s been an incredibly rewarding journey. “He initially started off playing Auskick, but didn’t enjoy that as much, things like picking up the ball with his hands was a bit of a challenge,” he said. “We had some friends suggest he give football [soccer] a go so we took him down to Spring Hills, who were very accommodating and it grew from there.” Michael transferred to Northcote when he got to under-12s, and doors started opening. “When he got to under-12s we always knew it would be a bit of a challenge because they shift to full size pitches,” George said.

“His skills were good enough to match it with them all, but speed and agility was a bit of an issue. “Northcote City run a disability team, so we took him down there where he played for two years.” Michael was given the opportunity to train with the Victorian side while at Northcote. His skills were enough to earn him a spot on the team at nationals last year. “Nationals was a big learning experience for him, but he loved it,” George said. “He absolutely loved it. He’s currently training with them with the hopes of getting selected to go back to nationals this year. “He’s got three main goals set for this year, finish year 11 – that’s more his parents’ goal – get picked to play for Victoria and his long-term goal is to play for the Pararoos, the national team.” Tate Papworth

Rail split lands $100m funding ‘‘

new electrified metro lines, to Melton and Wyndham Vale. Additional tracks will also be placed between Sunshine and the CBD to allow more trains to run – most likely through a new tunnel that would be part of airport rail link. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta

Allan said it was vital the plan continued moving forward. “The Western Rail Plan is one of the vital projects our growing city and state needs – electrifying the rail lines to the west to run more services to our booming suburbs and a step towards fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat,” she said. “It’s part of our suburban rail and road blitz that is slashing congestion, boosting services and creating thousands of jobs.” Express fast rail services on the Geelong and Ballarat lines, including full electrification of

the lines, is also being explored by Rail Projects Victoria. Investigations and technical studies are being carried out to better understand existing conditions along the Melton, Werribee, Wyndham Vale and Geelong corridors. Community consultation is expected to begin later this year. Delivery of the Western Rail Plan in conjunction with the airport rail link is also being explored. A business case for the airport rail link is due next year.

Network names new 5G suburbs By Alesha Capone Five suburbs in Melbourne’s west will be among the first in the state to have network sites built as part of Optus’ 5G home broadband rollout. The telco last week announced the first 30 suburbs and towns in Victoria where it plans to build the sites, including Braybrook, Laverton’s west, Hoppers Crossing, Williams

Landing and Maidstone. Other areas on the list include Greenvale Reservoir, Kensington, Geelong West, Norlane, Rye Central and Campbellfield South. The Optus sites, to be built by Ericsson, are set to have the antennas and equipment needed for 5G access installed across the coming months, although the locations are subject to change due to varying factors, including site acquisition.

Optus’ head of network access planning and quality, Kent Wu, said: “We are working closely with Ericsson to conduct critical inter-operability device testing so that we can deliver a compatible 5G home broadband product to customers and open these sites up as part of our expressions of interest campaign”. Fifth-generation cellular network technology, or 5G, provides broadband access, and is expected to deliver faster internet

network speeds and allow more devices to connect to the network at one time. Optus is planning to build 1200 5G sites across Australia by March next year. Optus has opened expressions of interest for customers from the 30 selected Victorian suburbs and towns to register their interest in connecting to 5G home broadband. Pressing need for print Two Sunshine artists are on a mission to teach more people about the art of printmaking. Fandata Studio owners Mito Elias and Ana Rita Pires are hosting workshops on alternative printing techniques in the coming weeks to introduce the art form to more people. Ms Pires said the workshops aimed to teach people new techniques and how they can create prints without traditional machinery. “We want to abolish traditional forms of printmaking and encourage people to discover outside surfaces and print directly on them,” she said. “The workshops will unlock unusual ways of making prints as traditional methods use heavy machinery that is not always accessible. “We want to bridge the gaps between the medium and the majority of people and teach people things they won’t have been exposed to before.” The husband and wife team, who both studied in Portugal, have been making a living as visual artists for many years.

They arrived in Melbourne from Portugal six years ago, moving to Sunshine almost five years ago. Ms Pires said there weren’t many opportunities for visual artists in Sunshine, so the couple decided to open their own studio. “There are more opportunities in surrounding neighbourhoods. We feel families in Sunshine want an arts hub and so that’s what we are offering,” she said. “Fandata Studio is a place where we will deliver workshops for the community.” The Alternative Printing Series workshops are on May 30 and June 6, 9 and 13 at 11 Sun Crescent, Sunshine. Following last weekâ€™s front page story in The Advocate about the lack of maintenance and the unsanitary conditions at Tottenham Primary School, bureaucracy has taken over. Parents at the school signed a petition asking for a definite answer from Department of Education by May 21 or they would stop their children from attending school on health grounds.

Sunshine Council will have the report of the committee it set up to probe the shortcomings of Ardeer by the end of June. The committee will hold a public meeting in Suspension St, Ardeer, on Thursday, 15 June, as the final step in its informationgathering process. It will then compile its report.

The State Government is looking into the conduct of Brimbank council with the office of the Minister for Planning and Local Government, Mr Maclellan, last week confirming an investigation was taking place. The ministerâ€™s spokeswoman, Ms Amanda Scanlan said the conduct of council business since it was elected in March 1997 was being scrutinised with an unnamed former local government chief executive officer heading the inquiry.

People experiencing early flu symptoms are being urged to attend a specialist influenza clinic set up in Deer Park as medical clinics and emergency wards are flooded with patients worried about swine flu. The clinic opened at ISIS Primary Care on Friday.

MY bRiMbAnK Jesuit Social Services has been helping migrants and refugees settle in the community for a number of years. Kara Mackay and Abbey Welsh are two people helping make what can be a difficult transition, easier. They spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank?

Tell us about Jesuit Social Services.

As someone new to the area, what’s struck you most? Abbey: It’s really great to see an area of the community I haven’t had the chance to previously see on a regular basis. It’s been an interesting journey, I think the overall spirit and resilience of our participants is incredibly obvious. What could be done better? Abbey: From a personal perspective, the scare tactics around refugees is so toxic and I think the people who hold those opinions probably have very little to do with refugees and migrants. If people were able to show even slightly more empathy or perspective on the reasons why people flee their countries, I just don’t think there would be that hostility. To have to leave your country for reasons out of your control, only to come here and

Kara: We have a couple of sites here and in St Albans. We do both group work and case work support for families and the Sunshine site also has youth programs, justice-related programs and housing programs. We have 300 volunteers spread across all programs in Jesuit Social Services. Walks us through a typical day. Kara: We might see four people a day each. Our caseload varies basing on need and complexity of participants. We work with people who have low and medium needs. We also do group work too. We really see the value in learning English as well as connecting communities together. We just want people and families to settle well in the area. Is there any issues you see arise regularly? Kara: In terms of being here in Australia, there is a housing crisis. In terms of housing affordability, we see over and over again, it’s becoming a huge challenge.

Knights split with coaches Melbourne Knights have parted ways with head coach Micky Colina and his assistant, Steve Gojevic. The Knights announced the decision after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Oakleigh Cannons in the National Premier League at Knights Stadium on Friday night. The Knights have gone winless in May, picking up just two points from four games. They are, however, still in the top six and a strong finals chance. Melbourne Knights have turned to stalwart Marijan Cvitkovic to take on the role of captain-coach for tomorrow night’s FFA Cup clash with Avondale. Deer Park dominates By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park’s dismantling of Werribee Districts will have the rest of the Western Region Football League division 1 quaking. The Lions were nigh on faultless in a commanding 55-point win that quickly turned one-sided on the scoreboard at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen described the ruthlessness of the victory as a “brutal assault on the opposition”. “That was probably the best game of football we’ve played in over 18 months,” he said. “I couldn’t have been more proud of the side today.” Deer Park, the six-time defending champion, was charged up for this one. After conceding the first goal of the match, the Lions banged on six unanswered goals to take a 31-point lead into quarter-time. Bullen rates Werribee Districts highly and was thrilled to blow them out of the water early. “Their list has improved dramatically over the course of the last 12 months,” he said. “To go out and kick six in the first and nine in the second was absolutely outstanding.” Kwame McHarg scorched the field with his pace and wowed the fans with his skill to collect best-afield honours. “Kwame was absolutely outstanding,” Bullen said. “He continually took the ball away with pace at the stoppages.” By no means was McHarg alone – this was a Lions team with no weak links. The Lions’ talls were dominant, with Jase Perkins and Chris Stewart kicking five goals each. And the smalls chipped in, Shannon Byrnes and Spiros Amarantidis adding three apiece. Ruckman Troy Kelm has been a big part of Deer Park’s early success. With Chris Stewart nursing a leg injury and playing predominantly forward, Kelm has been important in providing first use for the Lions’ onballers. Stewart has another issue stemming from

the game, with his hand blowing up “like a watermelon” following his stellar performance against Werribee Districts. “He potentially might have a small crack,” Bullen said. In division 3, Sunshine Heights caused an upset by downing previously undefeated Tarneit by 23 points. Mathew Serafin’s four goals were crucial for Heights. Albanvale slaughtered Wyndham Suns by 112 points, Nathan Black leading the way with 13 goals. Black is the premier forward in the division with 37 goals in five games.

The Springers had a comprehensive five rubbers to two victory over Tarneit in the grand final at Loops Table Tennis in Sunshine West. Xavier Dixon was the star of the show for the Springers – the Australian under 21 champion had crushing wins in all three of his games. After Dixon’s dominance, all that was left for Caroline Springs to do was for the Poplawski boys – Mark and William – to pick up a game each en route to the title. Late goal sends Rovers to the top in a tight contest A moment of brilliance from Davut Tahir has seen Albion Rovers gleefully take their turn in the game of musical chairs at the top of the Football Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west ladder. With the Rovers and Epping City so closely matched at Cairnlea Park on Saturday, the game was crying out for an extra effort to settle the score. Tahir stepped up to seal a 2-1 win for a sublime finish. With 15 minutes left in the match, Tahir broke the stern resistance of what had been a fairly sturdy Epping City backline. “Davut’s goal was very classy, very skilful and that’s what it was going to take to win that game,” Rovers coach Kevin Theuma said. “He brought the ball down on his chest just outside the box, did a bit of a fake, turned the defender inside out and had a shot.” Albion is top of the league for the second time in three weeks. In an incredibly tight race, the Rovers are one

of six teams who have occupied top spot in the first nine rounds. That is why it was so important for the Rovers not to settle for a share of the points, which both coaches probably would have been content with on the balance of play. “It wasn’t a pretty game, but I’m more than happy to win ugly to be honest,” Theuma said. “Points in the bank are better than points you are chasing, especially with the closeness of this season. “We were fourth on the ladder and now we’re first after the results. “It was a solid gutsy win from the boys because that game could’ve gone either way.” Albion’s first goal was a scrappy one scored by Nathan Long. The victory is not the only good news for the Rovers lately. Striker Adamson Ajayi’s return in the transfer window has excited the fans. Cavalier career kicks on By Lance Jenkinson Green Gully Cavaliers striker and NPL Golden Boot frontrunner Alex Salmon has found a second home in Keilor Downs. The Englishman is enjoying his time in Australia so much that he is open to settling here – and that is good news for the Cavaliers. “I came to a bit of a crossroads in England and fancied a change,” Salmon said. “I moved over to Perth because I knew a couple of lads there and my uncle was also there. “I just started playing football over there and enjoyed it. “I love the lifestyle here in Australia and I don’t think I’ll ever move home, to be honest.” Salmon moved to Perth three years ago and played in the NPL WA competition with Armadale, Bayswater City and Inglewood United. After some persistence from Green Gully general manager Raymond Mamo, Salmon eventually made the decision to move to Green Gully. Salmon has had a spectacular impact for the Cavaliers.

The 24-year-old has moved to equal top of the goalscorers chart with 13 goals, equal with Hume City’s James Brown. Salmon scored a double for Green Gully in a 4-2 defeat to Altona Magic at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. It was another demonstration of how easily Salmon has fitted into the Cavaliers’ mix. “Everyone at the club has made the transition and me coming across really easy,” he said. “All the lads are great – and the manager. I’m happy there and I’m settled. “I live around the corner from the football club, so it’s easy for me. It’s a lovely place [Melbourne] and I’m loving every minute of it.” Growing up just outside Liverpool in England, Salmon never envisaged his football path would take him to Australia. His boyhood dream would have been to be scoring goals at Goodison Park for his favourite club, Everton. Salmon was once in the professional system in the UK, graduating from Carlisle United’s youth academy to the senior squad. After three first team games, Salmon was loaned out to Alloa Athletic in Scotland.

From there, it was all non-league football for Salmon, taking in stints with Celtic Nation and Workington. He impressed in his time at Workington, but not enough to get back into the football league, so he decided to move Down Under. Even though he is so far away from home, Salmon has no trouble keeping in touch with friends and family. “I don’t feel like I haven’t seen them in ages,” Salmon said. “You can just FaceTime them now and it’s fine. “I speak to my friends every day, I speak to my family every day, so there’s not much that is missed.” Salmon has promised a family visit at the end of this NPL Victoria season, but not before he has played his part in completing Green Gully’s journey from the relegation play-off last season to finals contender this campaign. “It’s what we aim to do at the start of the year,” Salmon said. “You want to be up there by the halfway point and we’re around the mark. “You put a couple of wins together in this league and you never know what’s going to happen.”

The Keilor Thunder is back in business in Big V men’s state championship basketball. The Thunder players have won their past two games, consigning their worrying three-game losing streak to the scrap heap. The best part for the Thunder is that its return to form has come on the road. It snapped out of its funk with a win over Corio Bay Stingrays on May 18 and backed it up on Sunday with a hard-fought 89-83 victory over Chelsea Gulls at Patterson River Stadium. There was little to separate Keilor and Chelsea for most of the game, but Mike Anderson and BJ Symons came up big for the Thunder at crucial moments. Anderson compiled 26 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to show why he is one of the premier imports in the league. Symons scored 26 points, with all coming from the field at 80 per cent efficiency. Thunder coach Liam Glascott rotated heavily, with Carlo Camp one of the main beneficiaries with nine points off the bench. Fourth-placed Keilor (8-5) will take on third-placed Hume City Broncos (9-4) in what shapes as a mouth-watering contest at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium on Sunday. In women’s state championship, Keilor Thunder overcame a slow start to mercilessly dispose of Southern Peninsula Sharks 96-61 at Hillview Stadium on Saturday night. The Thunder trailed after the first period by four points, but upped the ante thereafter to out-score the Sharks 78-39. Aneta Bandilovski was on fire from the three-point arc for Keilor. The sharpshooter scored 23 points, including four threes, to go with five steals and three rebounds. Erin Bollman was influential with 21 points and six rebounds, while A’Lexus Harrison double-doubled with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Keilor is 8-2 and flying high in third spot on the ladder.
