Watergardens boom By Tate Papworth Watergardens Town Centre will undergo a radical $50 million transformation. Centre manager Joe Galea said the centre’s new food marketplace had been been inspired by – and would celebrate – the local community. “Work is now underway to create a bustling new modern food marketplace that celebrates the traditions of our community in addition to delivering a major new food retailer,” he said. The project will deliver 5000 square metres of transformed retail space and will include a new playground and a community space for activations and pop-ups. Just under 400 jobs are tipped be created during the construction stage and more than 400 new jobs are expected to be delivered once the project is complete.

Mr Galea said the revamp would celebrate “the centrality of food to our community” and would include a combination of fresh produce, speciality providores, multicultural street food vendors and a new Aldi supermarket. “The significant new food marketplace will celebrate generations and mirror the rich diversity of our community through the power of food,” he said. Mr Galea said the project was adopting a community first approach – and that there was more to come. “As a team, we have always held an ambitious, long-term view about the future of Watergardens,” he said. “The food marketplace builds on a number of initiatives currently underway, which further adds to its mix of uses and includes a new Officeworks, advanced preparation for a childcare centre and planning for serviced apartments that are proposed to be situated along Kings Road. “After considered planning, we are now equipped with the right plan to deliver our vision that pays tribute to the tradition and vitality of our community.” Mr Galea said the construction plan had been created to minimise any impact the project had on the community and retailers. Endangered species ‘poisoned’ By Tate Papworth Critically endangered flora and fauna could be wiped out to make way for a large-scale development in Delahey. Digital4 Pty Ltd, which trades as Broadcast Australia, has put forward a proposal that involves the rezoning, clearing and development of a 46-hectare greenfield site at 250A Taylors Road, Delahey. The site is home to the critically endangered native spiny rice flower and endangered wildlife including the golden sun moth and the striped legless lizard.

The proposal has been submitted to the Department of Environment and Energy. It’s the latest in a series of environmental concerns that neighbouring property owners have with the land. Judy Ingram, who has lived opposite the site for decades, said Broadcast Australia had neglected its responsibilities. “There’s been a serrated tussock problem in there ever since Broadcast Australia took over ownership in 2004,” she said. “It spreads quickly, so each summer I can’t use my backyard for four months because it’s filled with it.

“We’ve complained a lot, but were told that we just have to live with it because to get rid of it, they’d have to poison the land and that would be harmful to the endangered wildlife.” But Ms Ingram said that no longer seemed to be a concern. “The site has been poisoned and slashed right back,” she said. “There’s been developments proposed for this land twice in the past and both have been knocked back because of the endangered species. Birth seals a big deal for Brimbank The wait is finally over. At 9.22am last Wednesday, parents Lauren Mikhael and Edwin Baez welcomed a little girl into the world. The bub will forever hold a special place in western suburbs history as the first baby born at the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. More than 150 women, children, babies and about 200 staff members were moved into the hospital as part of a meticulously planned operation that took about four hours. The move also involved 24 babies in special care nursery cots. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said it was a momentous day. “The cutting-edge hospital is now complete … and local families are set to benefit from the very best in maternity and paediatric care,” she said. “Today’s move has required an enormous co-ordination and I’m so grateful to our hard-working hospital staff for making it all run smoothly.” The state-of-the art hospital includes 20 maternity delivery rooms, 237 beds, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics. It comprises nine floors, has more floor space than the MCG and was made with enough concrete to fill nearly four Olympic-size swimming pools. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said the hospital had changed the face of healthcare in the west. “The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital is a big boost for our community and for local families,” she said. “Thousands of mums will be able to have their baby and ensure they get the treatment and care they need.”

Walsh confirmed spraying of the site had been reported to the department. He said any development of the land would require an amendment to the Brimbank Planning Scheme. No application has been submitted to the council. Documents show that the development may result in the loss of up to five spiny rice flower plants, up to 10.281 hectares of golden sun moth habitat and up to 20.544 hectares of potential striped legless lizard habitat. The proposal is open for public comment at epbcnotices.environment.gov.au/invitations until May 24.

Lottery thrills in Brimbank Brimbank has two new multi-millionaires. A Delahey mum and a St Albans man each bought one of six division one-winning Tattslotto tickets with a total prize of $3,333,333.34 each. The Delahey mum discovered her win the night before Mother’s Day and said it was a wonderful gift. “This has been probably about 35 years in the making,” she said. “I’ve been using the same numbers – they’re birthdays and memorable days and things like that. “I was in total disbelief. I’m still kind of a bit weird about it. I don’t know. I’m still not really with it. It’s just incredible. “My husband and I often said if we were to ever win, it would be just our luck that there would be 30 winners and we might get $200,000, which would still be nice – but it’s not a million.” The St Albans man was equally thrilled with his collect, but vowed to keep working. “We’re going to buy our first ever house – we’re still renting,” he said. “We’ll also get some investments to build a portfolio for the future. We want to benefit the family for many years to come.” The man, who is in his 40s, said he’d known about the win for a number of days, but had been too busy to collect. “I’ve known since Saturday night, but haven’t had the time to get it,” he said. “We’ve been running around, getting organised. It’s been quite a crazy few days. “When I told my dad, he dropped the phone. Luckily, the phone still works.”

Mixed feelings for new MP By Tate Papworth

Heavy mettle win for Prue Pulling trucks, heavy lifting and a multitude of Herculean feats are just part of a normal workout for Kealba strongwoman Prue Houston. Prue decided to set herself a new challenge and switched to strongwoman training from CrossFit. “I’ve always been into fitness and was doing CrossFit to keep active, but when I discovered strongwoman, I knew it would be something I’d love,” she said. “I just wanted to change things up in my training so I decided to do a competition. I came third and it lit the fire.” Prue set her sights on Ballarat’s Strongest Woman competition and began a six-week training block. That work paid off when she delivered a first-place performance. “I actually got personal bests in all my lifts,” she said. “I got 60 kilograms on the bench press, 125 kilograms on the deadlifts, an 80-kilogram clean press, 220-kilogram yolk, a 90-kilogram atlas stone carry and did the 10-metre truck pull in 23 seconds.” It was enough for Prue to claim first place – now she’s aiming for higher honours. “At the end of June, there’s qualifiers for nationals, back in Ballarat,” she said. “I’m aiming to qualify for nationals, which are up in Brisbane in July.”

Labor’s Daniel Mulino describes Saturday’s federal election as bittersweet. Mr Mulino made history, becoming the first member for the newly established seat of Fraser, but his party won’t form government after the Coalition claimed an unlikely victory. “It’s very exciting – I’m honoured to be the first member to represent Fraser, but it was certainly bittersweet given the national result,” he said. Mr Mulino and the Labor Party had made a number of election commitments contingent on forming government, including $5 million towards the St Albans Leisure Centre. The project is now left without federal or state government support, but Mr Mulino vowed to advocate for support in his new role. “Labor made an election commitment and I’ll continue to push for the leisure centre to get federal assistance,” he said. “I think it’s an innovative approach to a leisure centre … and requires the co-operation of all three levels of government. “I’ll continue to advocate for a lot of the issues we put forward. The leisure centre is one, but under a Labor government local schools would have received $28 million in funding over three years.” Mr Mulino also intends to make his voice heard as the Airport Rail Link and Sunshine Super Hub move towards a reality. “I’m keen that the way we procure this meets the needs of the community,” he said. “I want to see it give opportunities to young people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity and it must be designed in a way that benefits the community in the long run.”

Racism keeps police busy Police in the state’s north west metro region have responded to hundreds of prejudiciallymotivated crimes within a five-year period, with more than half of the offences related to a victim’s race or ethnicity. Victoria Police data shows there were 528 “prejudicially-motivated” crimes recorded in the northwest – which covers 14 municipalities, including Wyndham, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Hume and Whittlesea – between January 2014 and December 2018. This included 341 offences related to race/ ethnicity, 121 related to religion, 111 related to sexual orientation, 94 related to political beliefs and 21 related to disability. Brimbank’s Acting Police Inspector Terrence West said people who experienced or witnessed prejudice-motivated crime, including online crime, should report it to the police. “Victoria Police is here to help – we do not tolerate violence and we take all crime seriously, including that which is motivated by prejudice, racism or discrimination,” he said. Acting Inspector West said crime reports indicated that prejudice-motivated crime could occur in public places, retail environments and residential premises. “This may include threats to kill, threats to inflict serious injury, stalking, assault, destroying or damaging property, including

graffiti and threats to destroy or damage property,” he said. “We know that crimes motivated by prejudice cause serious harm to victims, often leaving them, and their communities, feeling vulnerable, threatened and isolated.

“There is no justification for prejudice-motivated violence here in Victoria.” Acting Inspector West said Victoria Police has a number of Multicultural Liaison Officers (MLOs) who could help victims of prejudice-based crime to make a report. WEstjustice chief executive Denis Nelthorpe said the organisation sometimes heard from clients who were subjected to racist comments in public. Mr Nelthorpe said while some people who committed such acts could be mentally ill or affected by drugs or alcohol, it could also occur when people were “uneducated or racist”. Victims of racism or discrimination can contact their local police station, or triple-0 in an emergency. Any information about a crime motivated by prejudice can be reported to Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.

Our star’s time to shine A Sydenham singer is hoping to turn chairs, and heads, as she takes to the stage in one of the country’s biggest television shows. Fifteen-year-old Jessie Eilers’ blind audition will be broadcast on next Tuesday’s episode of The Voice. Although a seasoned performer with experience as a backup dancer and vocalist at Junior Eurovision, Jessie described The Voice audition as her most nerve-racking professional experience. “It was a surreal experience, definitely the most nervous I’ve ever been while singing and dancing,” she said. “It all happened really fast, but my focus was to make sure what I was singing connected.”

Jessie will be supported by her father at the audition, who has been her sole carer after her mother suddenly passed away in 2016. “My dad had a dramatic change. He was a really big sports person and suddenly went from that to taking me to singing and dance practice multiple times a week. “But he did all that and has been so supportive of me along the way.” Jessie said her song choice was for her mum. “I’ll sing Angel, which is a cursor to my mum. Robbery, assault charges

A Melton man has been charged with robbery and assault following an incident in Sunshine last month. It is alleged the 28-year-old man assaulted two teenagers and stole their mobile phones at Sunshine railway station on April 23. He has been bailed and will appear before the Sunshine Magistrates Court.

About 200 people are expected to pack out the Deer Park Club next month for the E.J. Whitten Foundation’s inaugural men’s health lunch. Foundation founder Ted Whitten said the lunch is another way of raising awareness of men’s health issues. “To be able to expose men’s health to the general community and to promote awareness and hopefully save some lives,” he said. “We’re going to have some serious speakers in regards to prostate cancer, but we’ll also have a bit of football as well. Brad Johnson, Sam Kekovich will … tell a few stories, so it’s a serious, yet a fun lunch.” While Mr Whitten is hoping to attract some corporate donations, he said the main idea is to save lives.

“We hope to gain the support of local business in the west to support this lunch, especially if they have a male-dominated workforce as they are our target audience,” he said. “Men over the age of 50 need to take charge of their own health, and if they have a family history of prostate cancer then they need to get an annual check-up from 40 years of age.” Mr Whitten said funds raised on the day will contribute to the foundation’s education programs as well as research and treatment of prostate cancer, a disease which kills an estimated 66 men a week in Australia. Construction on extensive upgrades to The Lakes Reserve flagship park began last week and will include a new activities and leisure area, improved playground, better views and more space for picnics. “We’re excited that work has begun on improvements to the much-loved Lakes Reserve in Taylors Lakes,” she said. “We’re upgrading the playground and introducing a new activity and leisure area with exercise equipment, an obstacle course, kick-a-ball space and more – along with a new irrigated picnic lawn, shelter, barbecue and improved views of the lake.” Safety will be improved at the park, as will the shared user path on the south side of the lake from Kings Road via Parmelia Drive to Sunshine Avenue. The playground and picnic areas will be closed and path access may be restricted while work is underway, but public toilets will remain open through most of the construction period. “I want to thank everyone for their patience … and encourage people to visit some of our many other wonderful parks here in Brimbank while The Lakes Reserve is temporarily closed,” Cr Congreve said.

Duke Street set to shine Sunshine’s Duke Street Community House had plenty to celebrate during Neighbourhood Week, thanks to a $199,100 state government grant. The funding will be used to bring to life the Create, Make, SHINE project, including refurbishment of learning spaces and the purchase of IT equipment including computers, iPads, and 3D printers. The program will pave the way for educational activities such as developing IT skills and computer use. Footscray MP Katie Hall visited the community house last week to make the announcement, saying the program would have a big impact. “I’m so pleased we have secured this funding for Duke Street Community House,” she said. “This project will change lives – by providing access to the people of Braybrook and Sunshine to the best technology available. “Duke Street Community House is a fantastic local organisation working tirelessly within our community. I’m proud to support the incredible work that they do.” The centre was established in 1973 to offer inclusive education and support services to the community. Friends farewell ‘gentle’ man By Esther Lauaki Parmpreet Punia has been remembered by his friends and loved ones for his kind heart and generosity. The 23 year-old, who recently moved from Tarneit to St Albans, died in the early hours of April 28 when the van he was driving collided with a truck while travelling from Melbourne to Adelaide delivering blood with the Australian Red Cross service. Gurpreet Sidhu, a roommate and close friend of Mr Punia, said he was a “child at heart”, always ready to help others and a hard worker. “We got to know about his death after some

common friends alerted us through Facebook,” Mr Sidhu said. “It took us a while to accept the news … He was an innocent and gentle human being. “His parents are in no condition to speak over the phone. Param was their only hope.” Mr Sidhu started a crowdfunding campaign on Facebook which has raised more than $45,000 to cover the cost of Mr Punia’s funeral and to support his family in India. “While we in Australia say goodbye to a friend and coworker, Parmpreet, the only son of his mother and father, are now without his support and face a tough struggle ahead,” he said.

Mr Punia’s family in Australia decided he would be buried in Australia and not repatriated to India. “The decision would be made on the basis of the condition of the body, which we have been told is in really bad shape,” Mr Sidhu said. Australian Red Cross Blood Service acting chief executive Greg Wilkie said police were investigating. “Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the family, friends, and co-workers of the driver,” he said. Mr Punia is survived by his parents and a younger sister, who lives with her husband in Canada.

All eyes on the alpacas Young bookworms are urged to visit Melton and Caroline Springs’ libraries this Wednesday to join in a national event. The special storytime will take place at the same time in libraries, schools, and kindergartens around Australia as part of Library and Information Week (May 22-26). The picture book Alpacas with Maracas, written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove, will be read for storytime. Songs, fun facts about alpacas, and a craft activity will follow at both Melton and Caroline Springs libraries. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the event would be a celebration of reading for children. “There is a real sense of community in sharing the same book, at the same time with so many other people across the country,” Cr Turner said.

“Events like this create a great feeling of fun around reading and promote literacy skills and imagination.” Last year, more than 1,062,230 people participated in National Simultaneous Storytime at more than 8255 locations. The annual event, now in its 19th year, kicks off at both libraries at 11am on May 22. National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week will be held from 27 May – 3 June. This year’s theme of ‘Grounded in truth, walk together with courage’, asks us to reflect on the truth of the past, no matter how confronting that may be. In order to better understand local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, everyone is invited to a series of events being held as part of Reconciliation Week celebrations. A Flag Raising Ceremony at the Melton Civic Centre, 232 High Street, Melton, will take place on Monday 27 May from 1pm, while a guided walk through the Melton Botanic Garden to explore local Indigenous plants is planned for Friday 31 May from 10am to midday. At CS Gallery, a digital works exhibition by Wayne Quilliam will be showing until Wednesday 19 June. Titled ‘Djiwarr’, it explores the body’s relationship to land and culture. Cr Bob Turner I’m very proud of our welcoming community, so it saddens me when I see illegal dumping on our reserves, roads and waterways. Our City is something to be respected, which is why Council takes a firm stance against illegal dumping, and on prosecuting individuals and businesses who treat our municipality like their personal rubbish bins.

Melton Weir. Council officers patrolling the area obtained details of the vehicle used in the dumping and conducted an investigation in partnership with VicRoads. The owner of the vehicle was given the opportunity to explain his actions but failed to cooperate. The matter was then referred to the Sunshine Magistrates Court, where the offender was fined $10,000 plus costs of $852, with conviction.

We’ve recently had some great success with reducing illegal dumping, due in no small part to the efforts of our Amenity Protection team. They’ve conducted blitzes, undertaken surveillance and investigation, and developed a community education program. They’ve targeted dumping hotspots worked with builders and developers, and have implemented a “dob in a dumper campaign”, all with great results.

To say we are thrilled with this outcome is an understatement. It sends a clear message that dumping is damaging our community, and that Council not only has the capacity, but will absolutely prosecute offenders.

Cr Ken Hardy In a dynamic, fast-growing municipality like the City of Melton, the importance of a well-connected, safe and reliable roads and public transport network, cannot be underestimated. Which is why Council continues to deliver and advocate for the infrastructure required to meet the needs of our community. Council has long prioritised transport infrastructure as a key driver in sustaining residential and economic growth across our City; a priority characterised by our continued advocacy efforts for the construction of an interchange at Bulmans Road. This upgrade would have a significant impact on our local transport infrastructure, in particular Brooklyn and Clarkes Roads, which are integral to our current network, but will become increasingly important when the

Bulmans Road interchange is constructed. Council will undertake a road corridor study of Brooklyn and Clarkes Roads to identify not only what improvements to infrastructure will be required, but also the timing of these works. Being able to move easily throughout our municipality, whether by road, public transport, or one of our many mixed-use paths, should be a safe and pleasant experience for everyone. That’s why the intersection of Station and Brooklyn Roads, Melton South, has been earmarked for the installation of traffic signals that will alleviate the congestion that occurs at the roundabout when the adjacent railway crossing is in operation. This critical project is currently in design stages and is awaiting funding as part of Council’s future capital works program. MY bRiMbAnK Carolyn Maggs and Anne Wilson have dedicated decades to the Girl Guides. Now they’re encouraging young girls to give it a go. They spoke to Laura Michell. What’s your connection to Brimbank?

Guides for roughly 25 years.

Carolyn: I was born in Sunshine and have lived here all my life. Anne: I have lived in Brimbank all my life, being 60 years.

Why did you first become involved with the Guides?

What do you like about where you live? Carolyn: It is not crowded and is easy to get from place to place. Anne: It’s familiar and comfortable and easy to get to any destination when required to go anywhere. What, if anything, would you change?

What would you say to girls thinking about joining the Guides?

Carolyn: Nothing, except to stop high-rise buildings being built in single storey residential areas. Anne: I’m very happy with how the area is always changing for the better, especially the latest plans from the state government to take out the three level crossings in Deer Park.

Carolyn: Come and give it a go. You will make new friends, have fun and learn new things. Anne: Girl Guides gives girls the tools to become confident, self respecting, responsible individual young women with leadership and personal skills to do anything they choose to do as an adult.

How long have you been involved with Deer Park Guides?

Where is your favourite local place to spend time?

Carolyn: I have been connected with Guiding in Brimbank since I was 11-years-old. Anne: I have been a leader with Deer Park Girl

Carolyn: Home. Anne: Home with my family is all I need at the moment.

Anne: I was a Brownie when I turned seven and never really left Guides, although I did have a break for a number of years before returning as a leader.

The Democrats put no pressure on Mr Charlie Skidmore to direct preferences to Labor in the elections. Mr Gus Kacinskas, of Lalor branch of the Australian Democrats said this yesterday. He added that the Democrats decided the result of the election – by their influence on close seats.

Sunshine Council faces a repair bill of almost $20 million to fix rotting drains in Braybrook and Maidstone. And the bill might climb higher if private home owners or the Ministry of Housing decide to sue because houses are sinking and cracking. The massive debt is being called the “potential number one crisis” of the council in modern times.

Students and residents at Sydenham have won their fight for better safety on the Melton Highway level crossing of the Melbourne-Bendigo railway line with the State Government last week announcing a $4 million road duplication project. A spokeswoman for the State Government said mini-boom barriers would replace the crib crossing, out of funding allocated for the level crossing upgrade.

The release of the Victorian Ombudsman’s report on Brimbank Council now threatens to embroil the current council. While Ombudsman George Brouwer has revealed the previous council as “corrupt and self-serving”’ community representatives are asking why a major event was not mentioned in the report’s 30 recommendations.

Apply to share in $600,000 in community grants The annual Brimbank community grants program provides financial support to not-for-profit and community groups to deliver projects and events to help make Brimbank stronger. $600,000 is now available in community grants for 2019/2020 – plus extra support for applicants, to give local community groups the best possible chance of success. To help local community groups prepare their applications, we’re offering information and drop-in sessions, including a Vietnamese language session. Interpreters will be available for all sessions – however these must be booked in advance. Come along to the next drop-in session on Monday 27 May at 2-3pm at the Keilor Library, 704B Old Calder Highway, Keilor. You can ask questions about the grants and receive oneon-one advice on your application. There is no charge to attend, and no RVSP is required. Council continues to power ahead on projects to benefit our community. There’s certainly a lot happening but here’s a quick snapshot. In the coming years the Melbourne Airport Rail Link will put Brimbank at the heart of exciting new developments in the west. Last week I visited Melbourne Airport to meet with its CEO, and we agreed to work closely together in the future so that our community will benefit in such areas as: • • • •

Economic developments Employment opportunities Educational opportunities Environmental issues

I also enjoyed a great tour of the Airport, which included a walk through airport control – did you know Melbourne Airport handles over 36 million passengers per year? Other tour highlights were a behind the scenes look at the new security screening process, a birds eye view of the new Airport Rail Link corridor and the T4 Express Link, and discussion on these projects. There’s a lot happening with the Airport! In other Brimbank news: • A reminder that Council is offering $600,000 in community grants during 2019/2020. We’re offering heaps of extra support for applicants, to give local community groups the best chance of success. This includes plenty of information and drop-in sessions around Brimbank, so jump on our website for more details or to apply for a grant before 14 July. • Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on Council’s Draft Budget for 2019/2020. Submissions closed on 17 May. On 27 May we’ll hear from people who made a written submission. Finally, the Annual Budget will be considered for adoption at the June Ordinary Council Meeting. We’re introducing a new At Call Hard Waste Collection Service for residential properties. This will replace the annual city-wide kerbside hard waste collection.

All the hard waste and green waste you place out for collection as part of the At Call Hard Waste Collection Service, will need to be ready for collection within your property boundary – in your front yard or on your driveway.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll be able to book one no charge At Call Collection each financial year, at a time of year convenient to you. This means no more waiting to find out what collection week has been allocated to your street each year, and having to scramble to get everything together in time. You’ll be able to get up to four cubic metres of hard waste and two cubic metres of green

Need more than one collection per year?

We’ve got you covered. Affordable additional user pays collections will be available too.

Much of what we throw out is food waste, making up almost half of our average household rubbish. Composting at home is a great way to cut your waste in half, reduce your carbon footprint, and make rich soil and fertiliser to grow healthy gardens. Organic material that ends up in landfill breaks down in a way that can create harmful greenhouse gases, including methane, which contributes to climate change. Keeping this waste out of landfill will also reduce our waste management costs. Composting is something we can all do to minimise waste going to landfill and help make a big difference for the environment. Why the new service?

We found there was strong community support for an At Call Collection model in Brimbank when Council carried out community consultation as part of developing our Waste, Recycling and Litter Strategy 2018-2028. Last October, Council endorsed the At Call service model as the new hard waste collection service to be implemented in Brimbank from mid-2019. Keep up to date at brimbank.vic.gov.au

Capital Works What’s bold, colourful and glows in the dark? Have you seen the bold new makeover of Princess Street, St Albans, featuring a spectacular lighting display and colourful designs inspired by the late Leigh Bowery? We recently celebrated the new, vibrant Princess Street with a fun, family-friendly evening of music, lantern-making workshops and street performers. The design was inspired by the late artist Leigh Bowery, who grew up in nearby Sunshine and was known for his bold, provocative art and design.

What’s new about Princess Street?

The new Princess Street features bold colours and a fun, lively atmosphere, and creates a pedestrian focused link between the St Albans train station, the nearby Errington Precinct, and of course, the Bowery Theatre at St Albans Community Centre. We want this to be a safe place where people feel comfortable getting around or meeting up with friends. The new design enhances safety with improved lighting and Brimbank’s first shared pedestrian and traffic zone, where pedestrians have right of way. The area also includes extra garden beds, trees, feature lighting, and new seating, all in a vibrant, theatrical design.

Recent improvements

• Fosters Road and Victory Street, Keilor Park – Road improvements and Local Centre upgrades are completed at cost of approx. $1.7 million. This included streetscape works at the Fosters Road shopping precinct and new raingardens along Victory Street to improve the water quality of stormwater from the road, before it runs off into drains and waterways.

• Another three park upgrades – ($100,000 each) were completed including Eurora/Koroit Place Reserve, Taylors Lakes, Ashton Avenue Reserve, St Albans and O’Connors Paddock, Cairnlea. The upgrades included new playground areas, picnic shelter and extensive tree planting at each site.

Works underway • Victoria Crescent, St Albans – Council completed streetscape upgrades including footpath replacement and upgrade, street furniture and soft landscaping at a cost of $120,000.

• Kurung Drive Reserve, Kings Park – The $400,000 upgrade was opened in March and includes a new play zone, basketball and netball courts, picnic, shelter and BBQ facilities and extensive tree planting.

• Green Gully Reserve Suburban Park, Keilor Downs, Stage 2 – The upgrade will provide a new play area, fitness stations, path improvements, toilet upgrade, extensive tree planting and a new full size basketball court at a cost of $700,000.

• West Esplanade, St Albans – The $100,000 pedestrian improvements will include a shared user path extension from the northern end of the rail parking area to opposite the St Albans Primary School (Ruth Street Bridge over rail). Work is expected to be completed soon.

• Hampshire Road, Sunshine, Stage 4 Upgrade – The $1.6 million project will include a new signalised intersection at Foundry Road and separated bicycle lanes from Ballarat Road to join the existing bike lane on Service Street.

• Lionheart Reserve, Taylors Lakes – Female-Friendly Change Room upgrade to reconfigure and upgrade two change rooms, to provide accessible and unisex spaces for all. The $339,450 project is due to be completed mid-2019.

• Alexandra Avenue Children’s Centre, Sunshine – Two new kindergarten rooms with space to accommodate 66 children will be added at a cost of $1.49 million. The upgrades will include a new playground valued at $160,000. The centre provides access to long day care, Maternal and Child Health services, allied health services for early years, and family services.

• The Lakes Reserve Flagship Park, Taylors Lakes – Will undergo a $3.34 million dollar transformation including a new activities and leisure area, improved playground, better views and more space for picnics.

• Errington Reserve, St Albans – Council is constructing a $4.3 million sports and community pavilion and new tennis courts valued at about $1.9 million to replace the existing pavilion and old Meals on Wheels building. Site mobilisation has commenced and demolition of the existing structures will soon follow. The new site will include three new synthetic grass courts and one multi-use hard court with LED lighting, to be located near the new sports and community pavilion. • John McLeod Reserve, Deer Park – Female-Friendly Change Room upgrade to reconfigure and upgrade two change rooms and two umpire’s rooms, to provide accessible and unisex spaces for all. The $371,405 project is due to be completed mid-2019.

Looking forward

• Keilor Park Tennis – Upgrade works will include converting tennis courts 1 and 2 to synthetic grass courts with new LED lighting and fencing. Works are expected to start soon. • Delahey Recreation Reserve, Delahey – Upgrades will include a new skate facility at a cost of $300,000. • Kevin Flint Reserve, Cairnlea – A $242,000 sports ground lighting upgrade to 100 LED lighting on pitch 1 and pitch 2 is expected to start soon.

Keep your home safe this winter Wood burning heaters

It’s that time of year! Winter’s near and wood heaters are starting to fire up. If used incorrectly wood burning heaters emit more pollutants/ smoke and use fuel inefficiently.

• Use plenty of paper and small, dry kindling under the wood to get a good fire

• Leave at least 2cm between pieces of wood • Reload wood regularly but don’t overfill

Smoke alarms

We know that working smoke alarms can save lives if there is a fire in the home.

From 1 July 2019, we’re introducing new ways to dispose of electronic waste (e-waste), following the Victorian Government’s state-wide ban on e-waste being sent to landfill.

E-waste includes anything with a battery, plug or cord that is no longer working or wanted. This includes old mobile phones, televisions, computers, monitors, printers, refrigerators, washing machines, heaters and other electrical goods.

• Air intake on heater should be left fully opened for at least 30 minutes after lighting

Never let your fire smoulder overnight. Choose dry well seasoned wood and store it under a roof to keep it dry. Stack wood loosely off the ground in a criss-cross manner.

e-waste ban coming soon

New e-waste drop-off points will be set up to collect, dismantle and recycle discarded products, at no charge. More information will be available as we approach the mid2019 ban.

Here are some simple tips to help you get a hot fire burning quickly and efficiently.

Check chimney for smoke. If there is smoke coming out of your chimney, your heater is not burning efficiently - some light smoke should not last longer than 20 minutes.

REMINDERS

It’s important to test alarms each month, and to change the batteries each year. Press the test button to be sure your alarm is working. Remember that the actual smoke alarm unit has an expiry date – in fact all smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years. We strongly advise that you check all smoke alarms in the home, check if the battery is still charged, and if the alarm is ready and working.

SPORT Inaccuracy crushes Western Region’s interleague hopes

The Western Region Football League never had a semblance of control over the scoreboard during its 42-point loss to Goulburn Valley Football League in the AFL Victoria Community Championship interleague clash on home soil at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The WRFL’s best took on the Goulburn Valley region in a mouth-watering encounter, but the hosts were made to rue both their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to hit targets inside 50 under pressure. A lot of the WRFL’s shots were from long distances, which was reflected in the team’s poor conversion of four goals from 18 shots. “They had a spare behind the footy during play and we just didn’t do a good enough job of rounding him,” WRFL coach Brad Julier said. “A lot of our shots were from 40 to 50 metres out instead of 20 to 30 metres, which we would’ve liked. “We just couldn’t get it deep enough inside 50 to get a good shot on goal.

“A lot of it was rushed, their pressure was pretty good.” Julier was pleased with the fight shown by the WRFL players, who played catch up as they trailed at every change. Had it not been for their inaccuracy in the final quarter, the WRFL might have had an unlikely comeback. “We were sort of hanging around all day,” he said. “The last quarter we challenged, but kicking seven behinds in that quarter didn’t help us.” Josh Macdonald was named the WRFL’s best for his impact on the wing. Macdonald was praised for his willingness to work both ways. “He used the footy well and his work rate was sensational,” Julier said. Daniel Nielson was the pick of the WRFL defenders for his work across half-back. His reading of the play stood out. “The ball came in quite a bit, but he was rock solid in the defence,” Julier said.

Brydon Hodgson put his body on the line for the cause in the midfield. “He crashed and bashed for us,” Julier said. “They were a pretty solid side size-wise but he used his body well and worked really hard in there for us.” While the result was not what the WRFL desired, the success of the occasion strengthened the league’s appetite for interleague football. Julier was impressed by the support of the top club, the players and the league officials. “There was great buy-in from a lot of the competition’s best players,” he said. “I think we had 17 WRFL juniors in the side – guys that have played all their junior footy with the WRFL – so there’s definitely a lot of talent there and we’re keen to keep pushing that. “It’s a big step forward for representative football in the WRFL.” Lance Jenkinson

Cavs united over brave stand By Lance Jenkinson Not since 2016 have Green Gully Cavaliers captured national attention as they did in the past week. Two years ago, the Cavaliers shocked the nation with a 2-1 upset win over A-League club Central Coast Mariners in the FFA Cup, a result that understandably created headlines. It took an incredible team performance for the Cavaliers to bring down a team of professionals on that unforgettable August night at Green Gully Reserve. Green Gully was last week the talk of the soccer nation again – this time for a totally different reason. Cavaliers forward Andy Brennan made the brave decision to come out as gay. It was always going to be a big story, with Brennan being the first former A-League player to come out. Just as on that day when Green Gully defeated Central Coast, the club united – this time in support of Brennan. Cavaliers striker Alex Salmon said Brennan’s declaration took a lot of courage. “When he told me, I said – it’s obviously a burden that’s been hanging over him – don’t feel like you can’t talk about it with all the lads,” Salmon said. “It speaks volumes about the group that we’ve got at Gully that he feels comfortable in doing that and coming out to us guys. “He’s a good lad … I hope he’s happy.” The decision to come out removed a weight from Brennan’s shoulders. Not only did his Green Gully teammates rally around him, but he was also overwhelmingly applauded in football circles. In an Instagram post, Brennan wrote: “It’s been tough to talk about this, but I couldn’t be happier with how people have reacted to the news. I always wanted it to be on my terms and in my words, and I can’t thank everyone enough for the support.” Brennan made a substitute appearance in Green Gully’s 1-1 draw with Oakleigh Cannons in the National Premier League at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. The 26-year-old had a significant role to play, slotting into the left side after Matthew Fletcher went down with a hamstring injury. When Brennan came on to the field, he did so with the Cavaliers a goal down after Wade Dekker had put Oakleigh in front after eight minutes. “It wasn’t like us,” Salmon said. “We’ve started well in the past five or six games. We’ve usually been the ones that have scored early.” But Green Gully did find a way to earn a share of the points. The equaliser came just after half-time when captain Nick Kalmar scored from a free kick. Kalmar, Jay Davies and Jonathan Bounas were influential in the midfield for Green Gully, while wing backs Jordan Lampard and substitute Jeremy Walker worked hard to defend and create. Manny Muscat played his last game for Green Gully after announcing his retirement during the week. Muscat had a decorated career locally with Green Gully and Sunshine George Cross, at A-League level with Wellington Phoenix and

Melbourne City and internationally with the Maltese national team. The 34-year-old played the final 13 minutes of the match and walked off to a guard of honour after the game. Salmon was impressed with the way Muscat approached his football in the short time he was a teammate. “He puts his tackles in, he’s got good quality on the ball and you can’t argue with what he’s done in his career,” he said. “It was nice for him to get his send off and I hope he enjoyed it.” Green Gully remains steady in fourth spot ahead of a clash with seventh-placed Altona Magic at Green Gully Reserve this Saturday. Meanwhile, Melbourne Knights played out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Dandenong Thunder at Knights Stadium on Friday night.

Gian Albano scored a double for the Knights with his second coming from the spot in second-half stoppage time to earn a point for his side. Marijan Cvitkovic was the Knights’ other scorer. The fifth-placed Knights will be back at home on Friday night to tackle the Oakleigh Cannons. In NPL women’s, Angela Beard scored a double in Calder United’s 4-0 win over Senior NTC at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Friday night. Speedster on track for glory By Lance Jenkinson Matthew Payne is scorching athletics tracks across Australia with his speed. The 15-year-old from Newport is one of the standout sprinters in his age group in the nation. He was a force at the state championships and showed his potential at the nationals to complete a sensational summer in athletics. Payne puts his success down to his commitment to improve. “When I want something, I go very hard for it,” he said. Payne ran to glory in the 100 metres and 200 metres at the Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships. The Williamstown Athletic Club member used the wins as a springboard for his season. “Knowing I could win the 100 metres and 200 metres at state level against the previous national champion, who was from my state, gave me a lot of confidence,” Payne said. “That was probably where my best form was in regards to personal bests and times. “I just went out there and ran my absolute best in good conditions against really good athletes.” Payne went on to represent Victoria at the Australian Athletics Championships. The Maribyrnong College student was due to compete in two events – the 100 metres and 200 metres – but a hamstring strain cost him the chance to compete in the 200. While that was a setback, Payne was able to show off his talents in the 100 metres, returning with a cherished silver medal. “That would be my main highlight so far,” Payne said. “I went up with somewhat of an expectation of myself to win a medal – whether it was necessarily gold, silver or bronze, I didn’t

“His determination and fierce competitiveness under pressure is second to none. “Matthew deserves these successes as he always is holding himself to a higher standard.” Payne got his start in athletics in 2012 as a member of the Williamstown Little Athletics Centre. It was not until 2016 that he began to take the sport seriously after winning a medal at the state championships. His first love is Australian rules and his dream is to play in the AFL. The Western Bulldogs supporter intends to take the elite pathways in both footy and athletics for the time being. The Williamstown Juniors midfielder played in the School Sports Victoria football team last year and is trying out for the team again this year. The question that will inevitably pop up in the coming years for Payne is whether he ultimately decides on athletics or football. Right now, he can’t answer that. “I love them both the same at the moment,” Payne said. “I still want to do athletics as it’s complementing my football a lot. “I’ll do that all the way up until I’m told not to by a coach. Or if footy doesn’t work out I’ll continue athletics.” Payne is aiming to be part of the Western Jets under-16 squad for next season. Payne is the May nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Payne will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club to assist him in achieving his sports goals.
