Townhouse takedown By Tate Papworth Controversial plans to build 72 townhouses on the former Keilor Park Primary School site have been scrapped. The site will now be sold as 28 individual suburban residential blocks by Development Victoria. The original proposal drew the ire of the local community, which packed out two public information sessions in July last year. The community cited a number of concerns surrounding the proposal including traffic conditions and the proposal’s ability to tie in with the character of the community. Residents lodged a formal petition against the proposal with the Brimbank council during its August meeting, which had 404 signatories.

Brimbank council will launch a bold makeover of the area and is throwing an evening of family fun to celebrate. Mayor Lucinda Congreve encouraged residents, traders and visitors to join in the celebrations. “Come on down to make a lantern, hear some music, try out the neon photo-booth and grab a coffee or ice cream on us – then sit back to enjoy the spectacular new lighting for the first time. “The design was inspired by the late artist Leigh Bowery, who grew up in nearby Sunshine and was known for his bold, provocative art and design. “The new Princess Street features bold colours and a fun, lively atmosphere, and creates a pedestrian-focused link between the St Albans train station, the nearby Errington Precinct, and of course, the Bowery Theatre.” The $1.175 million upgrade was funded by Brimbank City Council ($925,000) in partnership with the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program ($250,000). The new design is aimed at enhancing safety with improved lighting and Brimbank’s first shared pedestrian and traffic zone, where pedestrians have right of way. It also includes extra garden beds, trees, feature lighting and new seating, all in a vibrant, theatrical design. The celebratory evening will be held on Wednesday, May 15 from 5-7pm.

Community sentiment against the proposal was so strong that member for Niddrie Ben Carroll was forced to step in. Mr Carroll wrote to the then Minister for Major Projects Jacinta Allen requesting the project be reviewed. Mr Carroll welcomed the new proposal. “I shared many locals’ concerns about the overall size of the original proposal,” Mr Carroll said. “As someone who grew up in the adjacent suburb of Airport West, I appreciate what a close-knit and proud community Keilor Park is. “This new proposal keeps with the character of the community and will provide the opportunity for people to build their dream home and family life in Keilor Park.” However Stop Keilor Park Development chair James Gevergizian said it wasn’t a satisfying outcome. “We needed facilities for the community. At the moment if you look around Keilor Park, we don’t have many. We’d hoped for a small development with a small facility for the community.” Keilor Park Primary School closed in 2008. The site was then zoned from Public Use (Education) to Neighbourhood Residential and purchased by Development Victoria to develop housing.

Tributes paid to hit-run victim Tate Papworth A St Albans soccer club has paid tribute to a revered member of its family after he was killed in a hit-and-run incident. They’re fascinated by pulling the blanket back and watching the worms wriggle underneath it.” She said there had been additional benefits to the vegie venture. “The kids come out to the vegie patch and

Pupils at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children have been rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty with growing enthusiasm. The school recently received a $1000 Woolworths junior landcare grant and has put it to good use, establishing a vegie patch and worm farm. Early education co-ordinator Mel Walsh said it was great to see the children cultivate their green thumbs. “We wanted the kids to be able to walk out into the yard and pluck something from the garden and use it in the kitchen,” she said.

Melbourne Airport and Brimbank council have put pen to paper on a partnership to work on a range of issues. A number of councillors visited the airport last week where a memorandum of understanding was signed. Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said he was delighted to officially signify the partnership. “For Melbourne Airport, this MOU signals a closer partnership with Brimbank,” he said. “It will create the foundations for us to work more closely with council, and to partner on a broader range of initiatives.” He said he looked forward to ways the airport could work with the council to enhance the area. “We recognise the impact the airport has on the community, as a major employer and as a tourism gateway and we are very proud of the contributions that we make to the region, especially in the Brimbank and Hume areas,” he said. “From our conservation work to investing in education, we are constantly looking at ways to enhance the community in which we operate in and this MOU will form part of our ongoing commitment to local residents and the municipality as a whole.” One key project promises to be the highly touted airport rail link, which will include a super hub in Sunshine. Brimbank council has previously called for greater communication on issues affecting the community, such as PFAS in the waterways.

St Albans’ history goes on show By Laura Michell Local historians Joseph Ribarow and Nick Szwed are proud of St Albans. The pair have dedicated years to researching and documenting the history of their hometown and the people who grew up there. Later this month, they will share their passion for the history of St Albans with the community during a presentation at St Albans library for the National Heritage Festival. The photographic exhibition will take residents through the 150 years of St Albans. Mr Ribarow said the suburb had gone through significant change but its reputation as a home for migrants had not altered. “St Albans is a migrant suburb in the most positive sense,” he said. “I think St Albans is one of – if not the most – multicultural places in Victoria.” Mr Ribarow said the population of St Albans exploded in the 1950s following European migration to Australia after World War II. Prior to that, the suburb was home to just a few hundred people. Both Mr Szwed and Mr Ribarow arrived in St Albans with their families as migrants in the early 1950s. They remember the area being home to a community that felt like “one big family”. Mr Szwed said he remembered families, with the help of their neighbours, building simple bungalows on their land to live in while they constructed the family home. “By and large the settlers that arrived after the war were very harmonious because they were looking for peace. As far as I was concerned, it was a very big family,” Mr Szwed said. The area now known as St Albans was part of the Braybrook Keilor Farmers Common, before being sold off about 1868.

Mr Ribarow said the area was predominantly dairy land prior to migrant settlement. He said St Albans was in a rain shade area, making farming difficult. As a result, many farms in the area failed. Mr Ribarow said one of the most interesting

parts about researching St Albans’ history had been uncovering the stories of the people who lived there. He believes one man in particular – Frederik Charles Stenson – should be honoured. “I think he is Mr St Albans,” Mr Ribarow

said. “He represented St Albans on the Keilor council for 40 years before he died in 1857. I think there should be a memorial in some way.” The 150 Years of St Albans presentation will be on Thursday, May 30, 11.30am-12.15pm. Details: brimbanklibraries.vic.gov.au

Cops pursue ‘brutal’ death case Police are continuing their investigation into the death of a 77-year-old Sydenham woman. Vicki Ramadan’s body was found in her Sydenham home on Saturday, April 6. Police confirmed Ms Ramadan’s body was found with injuries. Homicide Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper soon after called for public assistance. “There’s still a lot of unanswered questions,” he said. “It was a brutal attack – there’s no other way to put it. A vulnerable, 77-year-old woman living by herself – it really was a horrific attack.

“What we are also interested in, is if anyone can provide details of any suspicious activity in and or around Vicki’s Marlborough Way home.” Detectives set up an information caravan for a day and were re-examining an abandoned house after several squatters spoke to police in connection to the murder. Despite the public call for information, the only update police had on the case was that “homicide squad detectives are continuing to investigate”. Stuart Anderson, a neighbour of Ms Ramadan, last month told Nine News how he found her.

“I felt sick, like I felt really sick,” he said. “I was nervous – just a big shock of fear went through me.” Ms Ramadan was often seen walking and was known to use public transport, in particular buses and taxis. She also regularly visited Watergardens shopping centre and was well known by local traders. Police confirmed Ms Ramadan had made multiple reports to police in the lead-up to her death, including that her house had been burgled. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Bridesmaids Dressing Room has taken home the gong for Best Bridesmaid Gown Business at the Australian Bridal Industry Awards for the sixth consecutive year. The business achieved an overall score of 99.69 per cent for its products, quality, customer service and overall experience. At the same time, the business was accorded hall of fame status for its ongoing success. Bridesmaids Dressing Room director Aneta Pazeski said this was a huge honour. “It’s great recognition of all the years collectively, of not only winning awards, but the effort and courage that it takes to run a business,” she said. “To be inducted, a business within the membership base of the Australian Bridal

Robbery car search

Police are searching for a blue Mitsubishi Lancer stolen from a Taylors Lakes house during an aggravated burglary on May 5. Police said three masked men forced their way into the Tasman Crescent home about 4am and stole a set of keys to the car. Brimbank police have praised most motorists for “doing the right thing” following a booze bus operation in St Albans. Police carried out 861 breath tests and 10 drug tests during a Furlong Road operation on May 8. Police said two drink drivers, one drug driver and one unlicensed driver were caught, while one car was impounded.

Sports club on a roll A western suburbs club that provides athletes with intellectual disabilities opportunities for competition close to home is looking to expand. The Melbourne West Special Olympics Club, which currently runs sessions in Footscray, Maribyrnong and Avondale Heights, is eyeing expansion into Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. The club provides weekly training and regular competition for people with intellectual disabilities in sports such as swimming, athletics, basketball, tennis and tenpin bowling.

The group recently began offering bocce competitions at the Cub Italia Sporting Club in St Albans as part of its expansion across the west. Melbourne West Special Olympics Club chairman Gavin Dovey said the club aimed to make sports accessible and enjoyable for people with intellectual disabilities. Cash boost for youth justice By Laura Michell A program aimed at keeping Brimbank’s youth out of the justice system has received a $200,000 boost from the state government. The Youth Junction was one of seven groups to recently receive a Youth Crime Prevention Grant from the government. The Sunshine-based organisation will use the grant to continue its Youth Umbrella Project, which aims to reduce crime among young people aged 10-24 who have had contact with, or are at risk of, being involved with the

criminal justice system. The project partners with a number of organisations including Victoria Police, Chin-Up, WEstjustice and YouthNow. The Youth Junction chief executive Karen Hart said the Youth Umbrella Project connected young people with services and education and training programs to help break the cycle of crime. Dr Hart said 210 people accessed the program in its first two years. It is hoped the $200,000 grant will allow an additional 120 young people to access the

The Youth Junction has a plan to try and address the need of all young people who present to our service.” St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said the grant would help The Youth Junction to empower young people to fulfill their potential.

Deer Park Club a winner A Brimbank club has been named the best family club in Victoria. The Deer Park Club picked up the award at the recent Community Clubs Victoria awards, where it was also named as home of the best entertainment program. It is the second consecutive year the Deer Park Club has been recognised at the awards, after winning the award for best renovation last year. Deer Park Club general manager David Thompson said the club was proud to have been recognised for its family environment and entertainment program. He said one of the highlights of the club’s entertainment program over the past year was the outdoor cinema nights for children. “Our club has, and continues to, grow substantially and we really do offer something for everyone. Our club welcomes everyone and our members feel as though they can have a go

School site sold for $8.2m By Tate Papworth The site of the former Calder Rise Primary School sold at auction for $8.2 million last Wednesday. The buyer has not been revealed, but speculation is that the land was purchased by a large-scale aged care or retirement housing provider who plans to be turn the site into a retirement village or aged care facility. A large crowd gathered to watch the much-talked about parcel of land go under the hammer. The auction, which attracted four bidders, ends a long-running push for the land to be kept for community use. The school was closed in 2009. Councillor Virginia Tachos has long advocated for the land to be kept in the community and said she was upset by the outcome. “It’s a great disappointment that Calder Rise and five, in total, school sites were sold in Brimbank. “These were community-owned assets in the first place paid for by taxes on our community. This already publicly-owned land should have stayed in community hands for future generations. “Vale Calder Rise.” However not everyone was upset by the outcome. Melbourne Auction Company auctioneer Paul Tzamalis said despite a dip in the market, rare opportunities such as the site will always attract buyers. “The vendor took the recent dip in the market into consideration, but they had a firm view on what the value was and were happy to hold it until the right buyer came along,” he said. “I dare say via public auction you might get

PFAS barrier breakthrough Australian engineers claim to have developed a world-first solution to stop the spread of potentially toxic PFAS compounds. PFAS, historically used in products such as firefighting foams, do not break down easily and can lead to ground and water contamination. Contamination has been detected at Melbourne Airport and some Brimbank waterways. Engineers Australia Victorian president Grant Scott said a newly developed product has been found to stop the spread of PFAS from concrete. He said the product, X55, creates a barrier which helps to encapsulate and stabilise the contaminants. “Part of the issue is that concrete is like a sponge,” Mr Scott said. “Once it [PFAS compounds] are in it, it lasts a long time. “When it rains, it resolubilises and can flow across into ground water, which is how it ends up in soil and waterways. “We’re going after the primary source first, then we’ll look at secondary sources.” X55 is non-toxic and can be sprayed or layered on to materials as a paste. Mr Scott said X55 had been tested for four years, including at airports. He said he believed Melbourne Airport was interested in current field trial results. Tate Papworth

Rent crisis hurts most vunerable By Laura Michell Vulnerable Brimbank residents are facing a housing crisis. A new report highlighting the municipality’s lack of affordable rentals for households receiving income support payments paints a grim picture. Anglicare Victoria’s Rental Affordability Snapshot, which surveyed more than 1203 rental listings across Brimbank during the weekend of March 23, reveals there are almost

no affordable rental properties in Brimbank for people relying on Centrelink payments. The analysis found just nine properties that were affordable for families on welfare, while none were affordable for single parents on Newstart, single people on Youth Allowance or Newstart or singles receiving youth allowance who live in a share house. Households receiving the minimum wage were better off, with 666 affordable listings found. Anglicare considers a rental property as

affordable if it has enough bedrooms for the household and costs less than 30 per cent of the household’s total income. Anglicare Victoria western regional director Claire Nyblom said that while nine properties were found to be affordable for families on welfare payments, the reality was that those properties would be rented to the applicant most equipped to pay the rent. “There are still no affordable housing options for people receiving full Centrelink benefits, including Newstart, aged pensions

and disability pensions. This leaves our most vulnerable community members in a state of housing crisis,” she said. “This creates a cycle of people needing to access services for support with rent, to access food and to seek support with utilities which may be overdue. Many people go without food or other essential items to avoid eviction from rental arrears.” Ms Nyblom said the shortage of affordable rental properties was putting low income earners at risk of homelessness.

Centre plays around Brimbank Shopping Centre has unveiled its newest attraction, which is bound to excite the younger members of the community. The centre celebrated the opening of its new children’s playground earlier this month with a day full of music and activities. Centre manager Linda Vella said it was a fantastic day of family fun. “The opening of a new kids’ playground at Brimbank is a big deal for our littlest guests so we wanted to mark the occasion with something to make them, and their families smile,” she said. “It was a full day of fun stuff for the kids, including roving entertainment, face-painters, kids’ activities and even a silent disco.” The new playground brings a touch of the sensory with a double-sided touchscreen featuring interactive and engaging games; a colourful, light reactive slide; a magical owl-shaped kaleidoscope mask; and balance testing ‘boinks’ – bouncy, sound-reflective

Lakeview leads the way By Ewen McRae Lakeview Senior College has known for some time it had a special teacher in Melanie Brooks, and now the whole state knows. Ms Brooks was last week named the Teacher of the Year at the VCAL Teacher Achievement Awards, while the VCAL program that she runs at the Caroline Springs school was also named as the best in the state. The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a ‘hands-on’ option for students in Years 11 and 12. Ms Brooks said it was a shock to win, but nice to get the recognition from her peers. “It was very exciting, and nice to be recognised for all the hard work that goes on here,” Ms Brooks said. “I’ve been involved with VCAL for 16 years, so it’s probably recognition for the work over a long period and lovely to get that and share it with my friends and family. “It’s also great for the kids to know that our program is state level kind of stuff, and that what we’re doing here at the college is seen to be worthy and a best practice model.” For Ms Brooks, her work prior to arriving at Lakeview is what gave her the passion to create such a well respected VCAL program. “Before I worked in teaching I worked a lot in student wellbeing, and some drug and alcohol work, and I felt like I was working with young people after the fact,” she said. “A lot of them had disengaged with education because there wasn’t an alternative for them. And VCAL is such a great option for kids who don’t see themselves as university candidates. “It’s such a great way to stay involved with education for kids, because they build networks, get hands-on working experience, but also get a qualification they can use once

they finish school.” The VCAL program at Lakeview has undergone a number of changes since Ms Brooks arrived in 2017 and immediately saw some opportunities to revamp the way things were done. Last year saw students build and

operate a coffee cart at the school, which they still run, giving students first-hand experience with running a business. “When I got here we shook everything out of the box and made some improvements which have really helped liven up the program,” Ms Brooks said.

Support for Parkinson’s Parkinson’s Victoria will be holding a seminar for those recently diagnosed with the condition. The seminar, which will be held at the Sunshine Hospital on Friday, May 17 from 2-6pm, is designed to help people better understand and manage the condition. Parkinson’s Victoria clinical nurse consultant Victor McConvey said The Recently Diagnosed Seminar will provide people diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the past five years with vital information about living with the complex, progressive neurological condition. “Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s is a life-changing experience,” he said. “Individual reactions to diagnosis can be as varied as the symptoms of the condition. “There is no blueprint for how to deal with the changes and adjustments that come with living with a chronic health condition.” He said the seminar would provide an opportunity for people to have their questions answered by experts, find out what services are available to them and to meet others who share similar experiences. MY bRiMbAnK Niki Risteski runs Zumba classes at the Taylors Hill Neighbourhood House. She spoke with Ewen McRae. What is your connection to Taylors Hill?

have a laugh . At the end of each term I organise a class with other Zumba instructors and we all teach together, giving the students a taste of different Zumba styles. We have barbecues, tea and coffee and get to know each other. We also have fun themed classes. For example, I will be having a glow theme for the Monday class for Mother’s Day and you get to bring your mum for free. Kids are always welcome to my classes for free with their parents as well so it also creates a place for parents to be active together with their children.

I lived in Taylors Hill when it was first established for a few years and then I moved to Sydney where I married my husband. After 14 years we decided it was a good time to move our family to a place we felt at home and safe and where all of my family live. What do you like best about the area? I love the community! The people in the area are friendly. There is everything we need here – shops, buses, supermarket, doctors – it’s convenient.

When do you run your classes? I teach Zumba for adults on Monday and Thursday at 6.30-7.30pm and now we have begun a Zumba kids class on Wednesday afternoons from 4.30-5.15pm

What could make the area better? Maybe a police station that is manned 24/7 in case of any emergencies and maybe upgrade some of the parks in the older estates. (Joe Mastroianni)

Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in the area? We enjoy going to Toscanini’s in CS Square, the food is delicious, and Slices in Caroline Springs. Can you tell me about your work at the Taylors Hill Neighborhood House? I am one of the tutors at the Neighbourhood House and I teach Zumba and Zumba kids. I love giving back to the community so the Neighbourhood House is the best place for me. How did you become involved? I decided to look into places where I could

teach my Zumba classes and stumbled upon the Neighbourhood House. I had a look around and found that it was exactly the type of place where I would love to teach, close to home and a part of the community. This is where I began teaching my first ever Zumba class. I ran four weeks of free Zumba during Active April and it had such a great response we decided we would make it a permanent class. The class grew from once a week to now three classes a week.

What is it about Zumba that makes it so much fun and keeps people coming back? Zumba is a workout in disguise. Every class feels like a party. The atmosphere in a Zumba class is fantastic, so much energy and everyone always looks happy. It’s just so much fun. Dancing has a lot of benefits to people’s health, mentally and physically. Zumba is a safe place for people to come and work out and become social, you get to meet new people and even

Every class is a highlight for me, I love seeing my students come back and have fun at every class and to be able to put a smile on each of their faces each time is a highlight for me. I love watching the kids dance with their parents and even better when they come up to the front and teach with me, it makes my heart full of love. What would people be surprised to know about you? Most people are surprised I teach Zumba to be honest! I don’t look the sporty type, but I am fit and it’s all because of Zumba. I am a mum of three and I’m 36 years old. People are always amazed at how much energy I have.

The Albion explosives factory site is up for sale. The 500 hectare site will be officially on the market on 20 May. The decision to sell the site comes after the state governmentâ€™s refusal to take on the billion-dollar development planned for Albion. It will be offered as one site, and will not be broken up in any way other than to allow for the official government plan to be followed.

The St Albans Business Group launched its bid to put the railway station underground at a public meeting attended by 300 residents on Monday. The bid, called Operation Underground, received a major boost on Monday afternoon when the Minister for Roads and Ports, Mr Craige, announced the State Government would provide $100,000 to investigate ways of reducing traffic congestion around the station.

Former Brimbank councillor Natalie Suleyman has indicated she would like to represent the community again, despite several allegations having been levelled against her in a scathing report by the Ombudsman. Event gaining traction Get ready to start your engines at the Gisborne Vintage Machinery Rally and Tractor Pull. More than 1500 people are expected to attend the annual event at Gisborne Steam Park. Organiser Arthur Boyd said the classic event was the perfect opportunity for people to take a step back in time. “People get to experience the yesteryears,” he said. Tractor engines, a steam roller, classic and vintage cars, trucks and trains, miniature train rides and an animal farm will feature at this year’s event. The tractor pull was started more than 40 years ago by the Gisborne and Steam Engine

Society group, now known as the Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society. Mr Boyd was a founding member of the first event. “The first one was outside Macedon House … that was a long time ago,” he said. “Then we had one in Sankey Reserve – it’s been around for a long time. “We sort of ran the first one to attract attention so that we could get more members.” This year’s event is on Sunday, May 19 between 9.30am-3pm at Webb Crescent, New Gisborne. “People can order online and they get an estimated delivery time, which is usually always spot-on,” he says.

Owner Neil Raina says Smokin’ Joe’s uses fresh vegetables and fresh dough every day – and the quality and the taste that result ensure locals return again and again.

Smokin’ Joe’s delivers to a wide range of areas including Sydenham and Hillside.

The menu at Smokin’ Joe’s, which opened in July last year, features fine fare that ranges from traditional and gourmet pizzas to pastas, risotto, grills, salads and, of course, desserts.

Karry says the usual delivery time is 30 to 40 minutes – regardless of what has been ordered.

But the pastas and traditional pizzas are just as popular. These range from the napolitana to the supreme or the signature Smokin’ Special pizzas – they come in small, large, family and “New Yorker” sizes, the latter for the truly hungry. Manager Karry also says the restaurant offers dietary choices. “We’ve got gluten-free options such as glutenfree pizza bases and risottos – and halal options,” he says. Smokin’ Joe’s has a staff of 10 people. Some man the kitchen, some take care of customers in the 20-seat cafe or outside in the eight-seat dining area – and some take care of deliveries. The team members are always determined to give good customer service, says Neil.

As the weather cools, Neil has been seeing more and more online orders.

“People order everything,” he says. “Almost equal pizza and pastas and parmigiana.” He says the team is happy to help with catering. “We just need a day’s notice for big parties,” he says. “Tell us the day before and we can do it.” Neil is enthused about Smokin’ Joe’s location. “Next door there’s a football club,” he says. “There’s a beautiful village shopping strip. It’s a very vibrant and small community. “If you’re health conscious, you don’t need to eat pizza – you can eat pasta, you can have a grill item, you can have our salads. SPORT Lakers respond to tough times with a thumping win

Caroline Springs has put a tumultuous lead-in behind it to create a club milestone in Western Region Football League division 1. The Lakers improved to 3-2 – and moved ahead of the win-loss ledger for the first time since its promotion to the top flight – with a 214-point shellacking of Albion at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. The win came after a tough week for the Lakers in which star key position player Brian Lake was de-registered for an accumulation of suspensions. Even without Lake, the Lakers found alternative avenues to the big sticks, piling on 35 goals against the hapless Albion. Lakers football manager Marc Raak said the margin represented success in terms of the challenge faced by the Caroline Springs players. “The score represents what we had to do,” he said. “Obviously Albion aren’t at full strength, but we still had to go out there and play good footy. “Brian Lake didn’t play this week due to suspension, so we had to find some other avenues to goal and we did that really good today.” It was all one-way traffic from go to whoa.

Cody Raak and Luke Edmondson helped themselves to seven goals apiece for Caroline Springs. Raak, the son of Marc, was named best-on-ground for his tireless efforts across half-forward. Edmondson played more as a deep forward, but was just as effective for the Lakers. Frank Campisi chimed in with five goals. “The forwards all got a bit of a taste for it today, which is good,” Raak said. “The pressure in the forward line was really good as well.” The Caroline Springs midfield delivered a power-packed performance. Captain Keenan O’Shea, star recruit Stephen Brewer, Max Tessari, Jerome Caterino and Beau Naim dominated, continually pumping the ball into attack for the Lakers. While Caroline Springs is in rare air on the ladder, a word of caution will be delivered to the players this week at training about not getting ahead of themselves. For the Lakers, there are tough games against Altona, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee Districts, Spotswood and Deer Park ahead. “It’s a huge month for the footy club,” Raak said.

“We’re excited and want to play these sides and see where we’re at.” As for Lake’s de-registration, Caroline Springs will exhaust all avenues to see one of its marquee players back on the field. As it stands, it will likely be a forlorn task – but the Lakers will not die wondering. “The right of appeal is normally 12 months’ time,” Raak said. “We’ll look into it with the AFL Players’ Association and see if there’s any other avenues where we can speed that up. “We’ve got to remember, this [Lake’s suspension record] goes far back to when he was a 17-year-old kid playing for an Adelaide club. “It’s a harsh penalty when you’re a 17-year-old and you got suspended for two weeks and it carries over 20-odd years later. “We’ll do the best for Brian, as we always do as a club, and if we can get to the table and state our case … we’ll see what happens.” Caroline Springs playing coach Brodie Holland was also recently de-registered for exceeding the threshold. Lions rebound after a rare loss By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park was in unfamiliar territory in the seven days leading into its grand final re-match with Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League division 1 at John McLeod Oval on Saturday. The Lions, six-time defending champions, are the side that is used to serving up thrashings to their hapless opponents, but this time it was they who were on the end of a rare blow-out loss after a 68-point belting from Altona the week before. Lions coach Marc Bullen described the performance on that day as “un-Deer Park like”. Instead of putting the blowtorch on his team, Bullen gave the players some breathing space and just watched to see what kind of reaction would come. It was a positive response as they produced a hard-fought, 20-point win over Hoppers Crossing. “The players let their colours down last week,” Bullen said. “There was some soul searching throughout the course of the week. “I didn’t really finger point or lay a blame, I let the guys self assess. “Sometimes you have to have trust in your group and just look at them without saying anything, which is what I did this week and we got a great performance. “That was the response we were after. “Definitely a pleasing result after not performing last week in such a big game.” Deer Park’s team defence was certainly much better, restricting Hoppers Crossing to just 11 goals after totally breaking down the week before. “We had 15 goals kicked against us at half time against Altona and 134 points for the total,” Bullen said. “It was very un-Deer Park like.” There were some outstanding individual performances for Deer Park. Spiros Amarantidis was electrifying with six goals. When the big moments came for the Lions, it was usually Amarantidis putting the finishing touches on the moves. He is playing career-best football. “He is probably one of the form players of the competition,” Bullen said. “His effort was outstanding, kicking six goals as a crumbing small forward. 48 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 14, 2019

Deer Park identified big bodied Hoppers Crossing midfielder Ashlin Brown as a player it needed to nullify. Trent Williams put his hand up for the run-with role and limited his impact. “He did a huge job on him,” Bullen said. If there was an area of the ground that Deer Park could exploit Hoppers Crossing, it was in the ruck. The Warriors were short a big man with Daniel Riosa injured and Lions big man Troy Kelm took full advantage. “He was great today playing the lion’s share in

the ruck,” Bullen said. “I think it was won and lost in the middle of the ground and there were some really good performances throughout the game.” With Kelm dominating in the ruck, it allowed Chris Stewart to play exclusively forward after he suffered a corked thigh. Stewart’s influence in the goal square was profound as he bagged five crucial goals. It might have been a strange week for Deer Park, but there is nothing strange about where they sit on the ladder in top spot. The Lions will remain in that position for

two weeks with next weekend set aside for interleague action. Meanwhile, St Albans had a 56-point win over Sunshine at Kings Park Reserve. Ben Said kicked four goals for the Saints to make it 17 in four games for the small forward, while Daniel Castellano kicked four for Sunshine. In division 3, Sunshine Heights was over the moon after a 57-point win over Laverton away at Laverton Park Reserve. The opposite could be said for Albanvale, who went down by 37 to Tarneit, and North Sunshine, who lost by 177 to Wyndham Suns.

Calder slams home an early goal in impressive display The signs were there 39 seconds into the match that Calder United was going to prove a handful for rivals South Melbourne in the NPL Women’s soccer at Lakeside Stadium on Friday night. Without even a minute on the clock, Angela Beard netted the quickest goal of the season to set United on its way to a 4-0 road victory. Calder president Eric Psarianos could not believe his eyes. “It was the quickest goal I’ve ever seen,” Psarianos said. “She lobbed it over the keeper from about 35 yards out. “It was fantastic to see.” United scored two goals in each half and were stern defensively. “To play them on their own home turf and put a strong performance in like that

was amazing,” Psarianos said. “It was a very complete performance by the girls. “I can’t tell you the name of one player on the night who didn’t perform.” This has become a trend for Calder United. United is 11 points clear on top of the ladder – though second-placed Bulleen Lions have two games in hand – and riding a five-game win streak. This incredible run from United is not simply about talent. “They are absolutely playing for one another at the moment,” Psarianos said. “The spirit amongst the team is nothing like I ever seen before.” Stacey Papadopoulos doubled Calder United’s lead in the 23rd minute. United had motored out of sight after goals

Psarianos is expecting a much tougher encounter this time around. “It’s not going to be an easy game because they’ve got a couple of their Emerging Matildas back,” he said. By Lance Jenkinson Keilor Park has been a bit flat in the early rounds of the Football Victoria men’s state league 1 season, but it put the fizz back in its game with a resounding 3-0 win over high-flying Altona City at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles produced a timely reminder of their potential with easily their best performance of the season, making their move from the bottom half of the table and into fifth spot in one fell swoop. “To beat the second side is no mean feat,” Eagles president Paul Portelli said. “It makes a statement that we’re still there. “It was like a six-point game for us.” Keilor Park did most of its damage in the opening 20 minutes. The Eagles set the tone with a goal through Malik Furlong after just 10 minutes. Furlong latched on to a well-weighted through ball and calmly slotted it past the keeper. It was also a precursor to one of Furlong’s best games for the Eagles. “He’s only a young boy, but he stepped up today,” Portelli said. “He scored the first goal and he was very consistent, always winning the ball and creating.” Goran Jozeljic doubled Keilor Park’s lead just eight minutes later. Jozeljic forced the opposition goalkeeper into error and took advantage of the turnover to score with a tap in. “He toiled away up front,” Portelli said. “We kept the pressure on them in the first half.”

The half-time whistle brought to an end a first 45 minutes of dominance from Keilor Park. The second half though was a different story. The Eagles managed to get a third goal through substitute Adrian Barresi, but it was not a totally comfortable lead. Altona City began to make more incursions into their front third and forced Eagles goalkeeper Frano Saric into action. Three Keilor Park injuries – ankle complaints for Jozeljic and Harry Hillary-Jenkins and a leg injury to Barresi – meant coach Paul Falzon did not have the chance to make any tactical moves. A red card to Sean Sacco for handling the ball in the box was another blow to the Eagles. Saric ensured the Eagles’ clean sheet would remain. “He made an excellent penalty save,” Portelli said. It was a win with the lot for Keilor Park. The Eagles played some breathtaking football and also showed character with a man down. It might be the result that turns the corner for the Eagles. “It was a top class performance today,” Portelli said. “I think the boys were really frustrated last week drawing with Essendon Royals. “They took their frustration out on Altona City this week.” It sets up a huge fifth-versus-sixth local derby between Keilor Park and Brimbank Stallions at the Club Italia Sporting Club on Saturday. “There’s always a bit of a rivalry between the two clubs, so it should be a good one,” Portelli said.

Knights hit a speed bump Melbourne Knights are in the midst of a slight lull in the National Premier League. The Knights have picked up just a point from their past two games and tumbled down two spots to fifth on the ladder. A disappointing draw with bottom-of-theladder Kingston City was followed by a 3-1 loss to Hume City on the road at Broadmeadows Valley Park on Saturday night. Marijan Cvitkovic put Melbourne Knights ahead after six minutes. The Knights’ night turned sour thereafter. They conceded three unanswered goals, two to City’s star striker James Brown, who has scored 11 in 12 games to sit second on the league’s golden boot. With two wins from their past six games, Melbourne Knights will be desperate to take advantage of the fact three of their next four games will be played in the friendly confines of Knights Stadium.

The Knights will host Dandenong Thunder at Somers Street on Friday night from 7.45pm. Green Gully Cavaliers turned it on in a 4-2 victory over Dandenong Thunder at George Andrews Reserve on Saturday night. The Cavaliers moved up to fourth on the ladder after a fourth win in five matches. Green Gully will be looking to continue its strong form when it hosts Oakleigh Cannons at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday from 3pm. In NPL 2 west, St Albans Saints had a costly 2-1 loss to Springvale White Eagles at Churchill Reserve on Sunday. Even a draw would have put the Saints clear at the top of the ladder, but instead they are top on goal difference from the Eastern Lions and Werribee City after the loss.
