Professional wrestler Erika Reid will break out her best and boldest moves when she takes on an interstate rival this week. The Braybrook star will fight Perth’s Lena Kross for the first time at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee. The two women will feature as one of the main events in Battle Lines, presented by Showdown Wrestling. Reid said her beloved pet rat, Pixie, often accompanied her to wrestling events. She described wrestling as “like theatre, but fighting”. “People are like, ‘Wrestling’s so fake’, but it’s not – it’s hard to fake getting punched in the head,” she said. “With wrestling, I enjoy the creative outlet, I enjoy the character and I enjoy fighting – I think that’s lots of fun.” Reid said that her full wrestling character name – Dreamtime Voodoo Witch Erika Reid – demonstrated her pride in her indigenous heritage and hopes of being a role model for children and indigenous young people. An elderly woman who died in suspicious circumstances inside her home in Sydenham could have been dead for up to a week before her body was found, homicide squad detectives say. The woman has been identified as 77-year-old Vicki Ramadan. A handyman made the grisly discovery after coming to repair Ms Ramadan’s fence at her Marlborough Way home just before 10am on Saturday. Homicide Squad Detective Sergeant Graham Ross confirmed that Ms Ramadan’s body was found with injuries, but he declined to speculate on the nature of those injuries. He also confirmed Ms Ramadan had made multiple reports to police, including her house being burgled, in the lead-up to her death. “The circumstances of her death are suspicious,” Detective Sergeant Ross said. “There is some injuries to the lady … and there is a post-mortem underway as we speak and we won’t know the exact cause of death until that post-mortem is completed.” Ms Ramadan was last seen alive on March 29 when she was dropped home by a neighbour after she was found wandering the street in a disoriented state. “She was seen wandering the streets and she looked a little bit lost,” Detective Sergeant Ross said. He urged anyone who had seen Ms Ramadan between March 29 and April 6 to contact police. “It’s vital we narrow down the movements of this lady … a lot of neighbours in this area know Vicki as she has been in the area for quite some time,” he said. “We are appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at the address during that period of time … it’s most important they contact us.” Ms Ramadan was a widow who lived alone. Neighbours said she had recently spoken of being afraid of a group of squatters who were living in a house across the road from her home. Detective Sergeant Ross confirmed this was a line of inquiry police were examining. “We’ll be looking at that address closely to see if it is connected to this investigation,” he said. Police spent much of Saturday inspecting an abandoned property across the road from Ms Ramadan’s house. Baby battery death sparks review It’s been four years and two months since Allison Rees held her one-year-old daughter Isabella in her arms and kissed her goodbye for the last time. Isabella was 14 months old when she died after a small, round battery became lodged in her oesophagus. Last Thursday morning, Ms Rees stood outside the Coroners Court and said the family should be celebrating Isabella’s fifth birthday and sending her off to school. Instead, she broke down as she welcomed findings made following an inquest into her daughter’s death, which called for sweeping statewide clinical practice guidelines to be implemented in assessing
children who may have swallowed potentially lethal button batteries. “The thought of living without Bella and seeing her beautiful joyous smile again is heartbreaking,” Ms Rees said. “Even after all this time it still feels like a really bad dream. We believe our beautiful Bella could have been saved.” Isabella was sent home from Sunshine Hospital three times as doctors wrote off vomiting and fever as symptoms of a viral infection before she died on February 4, 2015. Rob, Isabella’s dad, told doctors he thought she might have swallowed something, but this information did not make it into medical
records, coroner Catlin English said in her findings on Thursday. Three days after the first hospital visit, Isabella was running a fever and vomiting. Ms Rees returned to the hospital and showed staff blood clots and dirty nappies containing black, tar-like faeces. On the fourth hospital visit, after Ms Rees found Isabella in tears and covered in blood in her cot, an X-ray discovered a small silver button battery lodged inside her. But by then it was too late. Isabella died hours later despite intensive resuscitation efforts. Ms English, who probed the safety of the batteries, as well as Isabella’s treatment at Sunshine Hospital, found that the medical care
she received was “reasonable”. But she said parents should feel empowered to express their concerns and have their childrens’ cases escalated if they don’t feel they are being heard. Sunshine Hospital has since adopted a Call for Help program which allows families to escalate their concerns. Ms English recommended that the Victorian Paediatric Clinical Network, Safe Care Victoria and the Royal Children’s Hospital develop blanket clinical guidelines for the assessment and management of potentially fatal battery ingestion. Cairnlea’s secret powder revealed Tucked away in the grassy suburb of Cairnlea lies a small building. It looks unimpressive and you’d be forgiven for walking past it without a moments thought, but the little building holds a special place in Brimbank’s history. The Black Powder Mill was built in 1942 in the midst of World War II with the purpose of making gunpowder. Friends of the Black Powder Mill’s Olwen Ford said the mill stands for so much more these days. “It’s a symbol of the explosives industry which started in Melbourne’s west 140 years ago,” she said.
“It’s one of the last serving reminders of the industry and the thousands of workers who served in it.” The building and its machinery still function today and, once a year, the public is invited to have a look back into history. This year, the Black Powder Mill (corner of Parklea Avenue and Grassy Point Road, Cairnlea) will open its doors on May 4 from 11.30am. Ms Ford said it’s well worth a look. “We think this is the only mill of its kind in Australia that still works and it’s the last part of a factory – now gone – which was pretty important,” she said. “On the open day we’re
even going to have 19th century firearms being demonstrated … by a professional team.” Stories of the Black Powder Mill – which will involve members of Friends of the Black Powder Mill and the Sunshine District Historical Society sharing some of the more infamous stories of the mill – will take place at the Sunshine library on April 14 from 2pm. Police are warning Brimbank residents of a significant increase in the use of ‘mule bank accounts’ and are asking individuals to be vigilant when interacting with persons online. Police say the scammers – usually based overseas – will make initial contact via dating apps or online chat rooms. According to police, they gain your trust over a short period of time through ongoing communication and then ask you to assist with recovering money owed to them in Australia. The scammer will request the use of your bank account to facilitate money transfers and will offer you a small fee for your assistance They then proceed to transfer funds offshore through your bank account. These funds are likely to be ‘proceeds of crime’ from another scam or victim. Police say that by allowing the use of your bank account you become implicated in the scam and in certain circumstances will be committing a criminal offence. They requested that people refrain from providing any personal details to unknown persons through online interactions. Remembering a Kokoda kid By Tate Papworth Seventy-seven years on and the Kokoda campaign remains one of the toughest, bloodiest and gruelling in Australia’s history. It’s also the setting of remarkable bravery and teamwork – qualities Sunshine boy Sam Saliba had in spades. Sam was five when he arrived in Sunshine with his family in 1925 after immigrating from Malta. He was educated at a local school and as a young man got a job at Spalding Sunshine (now Bunnings) as a watchman. He also helped out at home on a small dairy farm. He was an exceptional footballer and a key member of Deer Park’s side in the late 1930s and early 1940s. His performances were so eyecatching that Sam was invited by Footscray VFL to do a pre-season prior to the 1941 season. Sam’s nephew Joe Azzopardi, who spent time on the Bulldogs’ board, said Sam looked destined to play in the big league. “Sam had caught everybody’s eye at the Bulldogs and the whisper was ‘that little Maltese boy from ICI Club is a ripper’,” Mr Azzopardi said. “However, just before the season started, the coach called Sam in and said ‘Sorry Sam – you are a bit too short – so sorry mate, you are not going to make the side’. “The Footscray Football Club records show that at the last minute before the 1941 footy season began, a young Spotswood prospect by the name of Charlie Sutton was signed up. “I guess you could almost say – the selected Footscray VFL side would have read – In: Sutton, Out: Saliba,” Mr Azzopardi said. “They would argue that they made the right move, as Charlie went on to captain and coach their first premiership side.”

It proved to be a sliding door moment for Sam who, still in his football gear, stormed out of the rooms feeling upset and frustrated, and headed straight for the Army drill hall next to the Western Oval. He voluntary enlisted to join the Army, as World War 2 was raging. He was told to go home and pack his bag and was sent to Queensland for urgent training. “The whole family were deeply concerned as
they had not heard from him for months, and as he was no longer playing footy for Deer Park, they wondered where he was,” Mr Azzopardi said. “Finally, a few months later, mum received a telegram from him saying – ‘Hello Big Sis, guess what – I have joined the Army and I am training in Queensland and should be home soon’.”
Sam was sent to New Guinea a few weeks later. A year later, his family received the heartbreaking news that he was wounded in action and died of his wounds on The Kokoda Track on December 19, 1942. A memorial plaque was placed on a tree at Spalding Sunshine and remained long after it became a Bunnings store, although Sam’s story has been seldom told.

Brimbank’s youth will be celebrated this week as Victorian Youth Week comes to the municipality. Brimbank Youth Services and Brimbank libraries have teamed up to host a series of events celebrating young people aged 12 to 25 and the positive contributions they make to the community. Police are appealing for assistance after a Sunshine North home was peppered with bullets on Thursday night. Mystery surrounds the death of a Sunshine West woman on a Qantas flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne on March 31. Two doctors on board the flight tried to save Aleisha Tracy, 33, before the plane could land. Paramedics were also on hand when the plane landed at Tullamarine about 9am but Ms Tracy could not be saved. The cause of death is unknown.

Square’s fresh food makeover By Tate Papworth The new and improved CS Square Shopping Centre has officially opened its doors. The $45 million upgrade boasts a host of new stores with an additional 6500 square metres of retail space. Among the fresh new stores are Woolworths, Priceline, The Reject Shop and Pacific Smile. The new Woolworths store will also offer a significant boost to employment for the local community, with 120 team members required. Woolworths says the store has been specifically designed to meet the needs of Caroline Springs residents and will include artisan breads, a marketplace feel to fruit and vegetables, an extensive selection of deli products, an array of fresh seafood, an in-store sushi counter and made-to-order cakes. Woolworths Supermarkets Victoria general manager Andrew Hall said it was one of the first Woolworths stores to trial the neighbourhood food store concept. “Woolworths Caroline Springs marks an evolution in our journey to create a neighbourhood food store, with the needs of the local customers at the forefront of its design,” he said. “This store is only the third of its kind in Victoria and will not only provide a great shopping experience for local customers, but also good prices on products they want, a great fresh offer and the convenience they are looking for in their busy lives.” Parking at the centre has also been improved. An additional 240 carparks have been added, bringing the total number of parking spaces to 1175. The works are stage three of the centre’s

Taylors Lakes Secondary College assistant principal Sasha Mildenhall has been named as one of 12 winners of the 2019 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards. Ms Mildenhall’s award is fitting acknowledgement of the lasting impact she’s had at the school.

She created a program to identify and extend gifted students which raised results across the board at the school. The resources she has developed also address the needs of students whose giftedness is accompanied by disability or other learning needs. She said it was vital that the curriculum kept all students engaged. “At the heart of everything I do is the belief that every student should have the opportunity to learn something new every day,” she said. “Helping colleagues understand how to modify the curriculum for highly capable students, who might otherwise disengage, is vital to ensure individual student’s needs are fully met.” Ms Mildenhall said her interest in the education of gifted students has now developed into a specialisation that is “influencing educators across the globe”. a partnership between the Commonwealth Bank and national education charity Schools Plus and are fast becoming one of the most prestigious prizes for Australian educators. Each of the 12 recipients receives a prize valued at $45,000 to assist with their
professional development, roll out a new education project in their school, and take part in an overseas study tour to a high-performing education system. Ms Mildenhall was chosen from more than 400 education professionals nationwide.

The council has release Brimbank Chat, which provides online access to the customer service team from Monday to Friday between 8.45am to 4.45pm. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was a great way for the community to have its questions answered. “In addition to visiting a customer service centre, emailing or calling, Brimbank Chat provides another way for our community to reach us,” she said. “When accessing the feature, look for the Brimbank Chat icon on the right hand side of council’s website at brimbank.vic.gov.au “What’s great is that you will always chat to a person and not a robot or a non-council staff member located offshore.” Cr Congreve said the service has been introduced after community feedback which identified a want for an alternative way to interact with the council about its services. “Council is committed to providing accessible and timely services that meet the needs of our diverse community,” she said. Cr Bob Turner It’s budget season, with the details of both Council’s 2019/20 draft budget and the Federal Budget 2019 being released last week. Locally, I’m proud of our significant investment of $62.4 million in capital works projects, delivering new and renewed roads, buildings, recreation, leisure and community facilities, footpath and bike lanes, library resources, street tree-planting and lighting, and public art.
Across the Easter long weekend, Council civic centre and library opening hours and waste collection days will be altered. Residents can call Council’s 24 hour phone service on 9747 7200 and a Council officer will contact you during business hours. If the matter is urgent, the operator will connect you to Council’s emergency after hours paging service.
Of these projects, the highlights include the Aintree Children’s and Community Centre, intersection works at Taylors Road and Westwood Drive, the design of the Eynesbury Station Early Learning Centre and the redevelopment of Macpherson Park. The fact is we are one of the nation’s fastest growing municipalities and this road is of national significance. Funding this project would not only create local jobs, but also improve the safety and congestion problems local and other drivers experience on a daily basis. Cr Michelle Mendes The draft budget was passed at last week’s Council meeting and is now open for public comment. I am proud of what the budget proposes and the consultation work that has been completed in partnership with the community, but we still need your input to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our City, now and into the future. Watts Ward residents will be pleased to hear that the construction of playgrounds at the Bloomsbury Drive Reserve and Morton Homestead, and the construction of stages 1 and 3 of the Macpherson Park redevelopment are included in the budget, as well as soon-to-commence work on the much-needed extension to the Diggers Rest Preschool. With State Government funding of $350,000 in addition to Council’s budget of $979,000, the work on the
Diggers Rest Preschool will create a larger learning space and an additional 33 kindergarten places for three and four-year old children. It’s a great win for the rapidly growing Diggers Rest community and one I am very pleased about. Finally, thank you and congratulations to everyone who attended or was involved in this year’s Harmony Day celebrations at Morton Homestead. As always, the event was rich in colour, joy and smiling faces and it was an honour to attend on behalf of the people of Watts Ward. In response to calls for improved lighting around the lake to enhance community safety, more than 70 light towers have been installed around the lake’s perimeter. “Lake Caroline is a wonderful spot for Caroline Springs’ residents to socialise, exercise and enjoy the local sights and birdlife,” Ms Kairouz said. “The Light Up Lake Caroline project makes it a suitable venue for people to visit at night as well.” Lights now cover the full 1.9-kilometre perimeter of the lake, making it a safer place for walking after dark. For nearby residents, the lights dim to 50 per cent after midnight before returning to full strength at 5.30am. The project was supported by two state government grants valued at $355,000, as well as a contribution of $360,000 from Melton council. The money for the project came through the government’s Public Safety Infrastructure grants, which support projects that improve community safety, security and confidence in public places. Across Victoria, the grants are being used

Dim view of traffic light issue By Tate Papworth In November last year the Brimbank council expressed its delight that work had finished on a $4.46 million project to duplicate Hume Drive. The project, a joint effort between Brimbank and Melton councils, doubled the available lanes on the popular road and included the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Hume Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard. But if you ask frustrated motorists, the project is far from finished.
Five months on, the traffic lights have not been switched on – despite council assertions that the job is done. One motorist labelled the works a disgrace. “The lights are still not in use, it’s causing a lot of problems,” he said. “We’ve exhausted all avenues. Everyone is blaming each other – VicRoads, Melton council, Brimbank council.” Brimbank council contributed about $1 million to the project which was managed by Melton council. Melton capital projects manager David
Caligari said a number of setbacks had caused the delays. “Due to technical setbacks and a cross boundary location, the traffic signals at Hume Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard have taken longer than expected to be switched on,” he said. “The physical location of the traffic signals across the administrative boundary of electricity distribution networks has caused complications in the meter allocation process. “In addition, defects in the civil and electrical works related to the power supply required
rectifications and a mandatory re-approval process. “We understand motorists’ frustration and this is a priority that we are actively following up with the electricity providers and VicRoads.” The council has resubmitted relevant documentation, however it still doesn’t know when the lights will be switched on. Construction on the project began in March last year and was estimated to be completed by mid to late 2018. The works also included landscaping improvements and upgrades to existing roundabouts.
Working on working out Up to 1000 people are expected to attend the biggest boot camp in Melbourne’s west, which was spurred by high levels of stress in the transport industry. Westgate Gym at Altona North is holding the event to raise awareness of depression and anxiety and funds for Beyond Blue. Gym owner Martin Williams said mental health was an important issue in the area as it has many transport and logistics workers. “[With] the high level of stress in the transport industry, long hours, it’s kind of a dangerous field,” he said. “We’ve got all the major transport industries this way; it’s more a heavily male-dominated factory industry. “Beyond Blue recognises the male stress and anxiety that can play a part.” Mr Williams said working out was a way for many to improve mind health. “When you’re training and you’re enjoying the training environment, it becomes a part
of your lifestyle and it’s a really great form of escape,” he said. “We find a lot of members here are very structured in the way they train and their dedication to their training, and it becomes an integral part of their life. “It’s an integral part of both your mental approach to life and your physical ability to be able to cope.” The boot camp is on May 4 from 7.30am, with a second morning session planned if the event gets too big. School unlocks keys to success By Jewel Topsfield - The Age The winner of The Age’s Schools that Excel in Melbourne’s west in the government school category – St Albans Secondary College – has become something of a cause celebre. In her 2014 book Class Act, Maxine McKew wrote that “in the bad old days, the school managed to fit the disparaging stereotype of a westie school – a tough place with poor attendance, low performance and almost zero expectations”. It has since become a resounding success
story, often hailed as a shining example of how socio-economic disadvantage does not have to equate to low educational outcomes. In 2011, Joanne Ha, whose portrait is in the school foyer, became the first student at the school to achieve a perfect VCE score. Over the past decade, St Albans’ median VCE score has gone from 28 in 2009 to 30 for the past four years. This puts the typical St Albans student on par with the statewide average. It’s an achievement that is all the more impressive considering that between 2003 and 2014, the median study score at the school
never rose above 29. Principal Kerrie Dowsley says the achievements of the school’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students have been equally significant and celebrated. “Part of what we do is recognise success,” Ms Dowsley said. Class Act outlines the details behind the school’s stunning transformation – the emphasis placed on lesson planning and improved teaching practices. Teachers explicitly outline what will be covered in class and review the lesson at the
end. But three years ago, when the school appointed a student learning action team, the students asked: “Why don’t we know about this?” “For us a key lever has also been about activating student voice in their learning,” Ms Dowsley says. “One of the first jobs which they took on was to design a poster, now up in every classroom, which sets out what teachers do to support learning, and what an active learner should be doing at each stage of a lesson, such as note making.”
A family celebration The tight-knit St Peter’s Catholic Primary School community has celebrated the school’s 40th anniversary. Past and present pupils and other guests last month enjoyed a celebratory mass officiated by Bishop Mark Edwards, followed by a community lunch and entertainment. The principal of the Sunshine West school, Karen Bergin, said many hours were spent swapping stories and sifting through nostalgic memorabilia. “We had a fantastic day – it was actually overwhelming with 400 to 500 people coming back to the school,” Ms Bergin said. “We had a number of people who were here in 1979 when school started which was fantastic … it was more than just St Peter’s, it was a day of fun and colour for the whole West Sunshine community.” Ms Bergin said the school had become a real family in the past four decades.
“We’ve become such a multicultural, multi-faith school,” she said. “On the day, we had an Ethiopian family showcase their culture as well as a few other nationalities – it really showcased who we are as a community.” Ms Bergin has been principal of the school for the past seven years and said it’s been a privilege to hold the position. “This school is a real hidden gem of Sunshine West – a lot of people don’t know we’re here,” she said. “Our numbers have stayed pretty stable at 180-200, but we’re always looking to add to the family – we’re more a family than a school, being small we all know each other.” Tate Papworth Bishop Mark Edwards, Violet, Andrea McKenner, Mena Yemata Tadese, Grace Frazzica. Two new partnerships will aim to provide support to people in the west experiencing hardship. Western Health and the Western Bulldogs have each entered 23-year partnerships with Netflow – an organisation with a focus on road projects in Australia and New Zealand. The Western Health and Netflow partnership will support the Greatest Need Project, a Western Health initiative aimed at supporting patients experiencing severe disadvantage. Western Health Foundation director Julia White said the partnership would ensure the
program is around for many years to come. “The Greatest Need Project was established to provide direct assistance to those in our community at risk of falling through the gaps,” Ms White said. “It’s an innovative program, designed to respond on a patient-by-patient basis to ensure everyone is able to receive the best healthcare for their specific needs. “Funding for the program is sourced completely through corporate and individual donations and we are thrilled that Netflow has stepped up as a major contributor to ensure the long-term viability of this program.” The partnership between the Western Bulldogs and Netflow will aim to support newly-arrived migrants and refugees in the
western suburbs. It will deliver settlement and employability services to an additional 130 new migrants and refugees each year across western Melbourne. Western Bulldogs Community Foundation general manager Kashif Bouns said the partnership would create long-term benefits for the booming west. “The western suburbs continue to be one of the most popular places for new Australians to call home, and the demand for our programs is ever-growing,” Mr Bouns said. “This partnership with Netflow means we now have the ability to assist more newly-arrived refugees and migrants each year for 23 years.”

Bank funds go full circle A Deer Park bank is looking to funnel its profits back into the Brimbank community. Circle Alliance Bank has recently undergone a restructure to become a social enterprise and aims to return at least half of its profits to the local community. Circle Alliance marketing specialist Steven Jackson said it was about serving a different kind of shareholder. “We don’t make profits for a group of shareholders, our customers are our shareholders, meaning we want what is best for them,” he said. Mr Jackson said the organisation’s support doesn’t stop at cash donations. “We also donate all of our staff two days a year to work for a local charity of their choice,” he said. “Last year we all chose to help gather and wrap Christmas presents for the homeless through Anonymous X. “We’re also donating time expertise in the financial sector. We aim to work with the community and make people financially literate – whether that be offering budget advice for free or something as simple as offering migrants advice on how to set up a bank account.” Mr Jackson said the bank is in discussions with several local groups, working on areas that are mutually beneficial. “We’ve got a few things in the pipeline – we’re currently talking with Good Return, IPC Health and a number of other groups,” he said. “We also donate time to Sunshine Secondary College to go through mock interviews with the kids and prepare them for their first job.” Tate Papworth

MY bRiMbAnK Johanna Van Dreumel has seen a lot of changes over almost four decades of service at Western Health. She spoke with Tate Papworth.
I love the multiculturalism. I love the way people are proud of where they come from and they show it off with things like food, festivals. What do you think we could do better? We all need to accept one another. You’ve worked at Western Health for 39 years. What’s kept you around for so long? The women and their babies. I only planned to stay here for five years when I first came here, but the women kept me around. I love the multiculturalism of Sunshine Hospital and I love educating these migrant families. The west has exploded in the past few years, which I’m sure has impacted the hospital. What’s been the biggest challenge? It’s so much busier. It’s that much harder to keep people working as a team because it’s so large. It’s like when your family gets bigger you lose contact with some people. We find that we’ve got little pods of areas now, whereas before we were a lot smaller and more compact and we worked better as a team. It’s just the acuity. We’re so busy. Tell us a bit about your role. I’m a mother craft nurse. I work alongside
midwives and as of recently I do breast feeding assistance. So I visit most of the new mums or the ladies who are having breast feeding issues and I do breast feeding classes every third Saturday. I like to include the partners in these talks too because they’re part of the family. Education aspect has really developed over the years. We’re empowering these women with information so they can make choices. You’ve mentioned multiculturalism a few times – how does the diversity of the west impact your job? It’s beautiful. People come from all different cultures and we can learn from that. It’s not really a challenge with things like language barriers because we have translators and all sorts of things like that. It can be different cultures and the way they bring up their children. Just because we live in a wealthy English society doesn’t mean our way is the right way. You must be excited about the Joan Kirner Hospital about to open? I can’t wait to go to the new building. These women are going to be blown away when they see what we’ve got. Just for me, I’ve seen such a difference from what we started off with in my early days at Footscray Hospital. I never thought I’d see the day where I’d see something like this. Medicine has changed a lot – for the better.

House cladding salesman who were named in Parliament in 1977, for employing dubious sales techniques, are operating again in North Sunshine. In October 1977 the then Minister for Consumer Affairs, Mr MacLennan, said in Parliament that the selling methods of a group of cladding companies operating in the Sunshine area “borders on harassment and coercion.”
The April meeting of Sunshine Council came to an abrupt and fiery end last night when a sickly odour was released in the council chamber. At least one woman is recovering after being overcome by fumes, Mrs Georgina Lialos, who suffers from a heart condition vomited and then collapsed after the smell invaded the room.
One of the more unusual relics of early 20th century Maribyrnong River history has gone astray in the wake of school closures and council reforms. The White Lady statue stood in the Tea Gardens at Avondale Heights. With the demise of Keilor Council, the Tea Gardens, which now are part of Canning Street Reserve, came under Moonee Valley council.
Brimbank’s broadband trouble spots could be a thing of the past thanks to a new Federal Government package, but a state MP believes residents have bigger issues than internet access. Residents of Sunshine West, parts of St Albans and Keilor as well as newer areas such as Hillside and Caroline Springs, have struggled to get broadband, but under the new plan they could have access within eight years.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a star achiever in Sunshine There are – I believe – three places serving the food of Afghanistan in Sunshine. Amid the (mostly) Vietnamese hubub around Sunshine central and Hampshire Road, they are easy to miss – and Afghan Star is perhaps the most anonymous of them. It looks, from the outside and inside both, like a humdrum takeaway joint of non-specific origins. You can get a pizza here – with pineapple, if that’s your kind of thing. The decor is utilitarian. But after sporadic visits over the recent couple of years, I reckon it’s time for a CTS story. Because I really do like this place. And if the review visit – with Bennie Weir and Nat Stockley in tow – doesn’t quite reach the heights of my previous (solo) visits, I nevertheless remain enamoured of Afghan Star. Here is less proper restaurant routine and more a place to grab some quick and very cheap Afghan food. There’s a range of stews/curries called qorma. I’ve tried a couple of them; they’re good. But really, the top action here is all about grilled meats. Though the flatbread is stupendously wonderful – it’s hot, freshly made and enormous. On each and every visit I have made to Afghan Star, I have taken at least half one of these home with me. And if I order charcoal chicken, I end up

Because a whole, excellent chook – with flatbread, some salady bits/pieces and a minty dipping sauce with a subtle yet important chilli kick – costs $14.99. The chicken is very, very good, best and most juicy/succulent on the bone, though inevitably a bit dry in the heart of the breast. That’s what the minty sauce is for. It’s a fine thing that there’s plenty of my chicken to go around, because Bennie is disappointed with his doner mix kebab platter ($10). For starters, he doesn’t believe it accurately reflects the colour photo at the serving counter upon which he’s based his selection. It’s OK – but amounts to HSP on a plate. Much better – and returning to the heart of the Afghan Star matter – is Nat’s mix kebab platter, another $14.99 steal served on rice and with the same flatbread, salad and sauce. The tikka/shish lamb meat is very tasty, though a tad on the dry/tough side. Just a tad … The kobida/kofta minced lamb meat is much better – chewy and nicely (mildly) seasoned. SPORT Saints send a strong message By Lance Jenkinson St Albans issued a ‘be careful what you wish for’ message to newly promoted Point Cook in a 92-point drubbing in the opening round of the Western Region Football League division 1 season. The Saints gave the newcomers an unruly welcome to the top flight at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday, producing an impressive brand of attacking football coupled with a bruising attack on the man and the contest. There would have been a number of sore and sorry Point Cook players the next morning as the Saints’ bigger bodies came to the fore. New Saints coach Perry Meka wants to see that hard-at-it style of football played by his team to be its trademark for the rest of the season. “Our game plan is to win that hard footy, get it back in our hands and make them pay the other way,” he said. “I thought they followed the game plan that we’ve been working on during the pre-season. “It doesn’t matter about the opposition if we play our style of footy.” While it was a convincing win for St Albans, it was not all to Meka’s liking. The Saints were dominant across all lines, but their finishing left a lot to be desired. They had an inaccurate return of just 17 goals from 33 scoring shots and there were some selfish misses that will be brought up in the review. “They’re all keen, it’s round one and they’re all trying to get on the scoreboard, I get that,” Meka said. “It’s something that’s not in our game plan, it’s not in our team values, so it’s something we’ll work on. “We had plenty of opportunities – our inside 50s was 57 to their 17. “To kick 17.16 shows we’ve got some work to do. “We need to just straighten up a bit with our forward 50 entries and make them pay on the scoreboard a bit.” Big man David Kovacevic was a standout for St Albans.
The ruckman handed Point Cook youngster Aker Ali a lesson. “I thought he was our best player by a mile,” Meka said. “He played a ruck rover’s role like he does. “He had a great day.” St Albans had 12 individual goalkickers, including three each to Ben Said and Lachlan Calder. Shylo Smith was the pick of the Saints midfielders for his work at the coal face. “Our whole midfield were on top, but in saying that, our backline held the opposition to four goals,” he said. St Albans will face a much tougher assignment this Saturday when it hosts Hoppers Crossing at Kings Park Reserve. “We’re really looking forward to the challenge,” Meka said. “I’ve said to the players already, we need to start looking ahead straight away. “It’s a home game, we’ll get a big crowd, we’re really looking forward to it and I can’t wait.” In other division 1 games, Albion was powerless to stop Werribee Districts, losing by 188 points in a desperately one-sided game. Deer Park unfurled its premiership flag before dominating Caroline Springs by 78 points on a day when former Western Bulldogs forward Jack Redpath kicked three goals on debut. Altona led at every change en route to a 23-point win over Hoppers Crossing. In division 2, North Footscray was victorious in a 46-goal shoot-out over Manor Lakes by 28 points. Wyndhamvale won a low scoring affair by 13 points over flag fancy Yarraville-Seddon. Newly promoted Point Cook Centrals cruised to a 39-point win over West Footscray, while Parkside crushed Newport by 61. In division 3, North Sunshine could only manage one goal in a 204-point humiliation against Laverton. Albanvale was impressive in a 71-point victory over Sunshine Heights. Glen Orden opened its account with an 88-point win over Wyndham Suns, while Braybrook went down by 79 points to Tarneit.

Dodgy pre-season gives way to Kangaroo optimism Adam Contessa was feeling a little apprehensive ahead of his first game as coach of Sunshine on Saturday. Aside from the normal butterflies in the stomach that come with coaching a side for the first time, Contessa wanted to put his mind at ease after a less than ideal preparation by his side for the start of the Western Region Football League division 1 season. “It was a real unknown for us today,” Contessa said. “Our practice match form wasn’t great and that was basically because we had six to 10 blokes unavailable every game … it was like a revolving door. “This was the first real hit-out with the majority of those blokes playing together as a group. “We walked away from the game thinking, ‘We’re going to be competitive’.” The record books will show that Sunshine lost to Spotswood by 37 points at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Kangaroos were “outclassed” on the day, but Contessa was encouraged by what he saw. “The big one for us was just the endeavour, the ability for us to just have a crack,” Contessa said. “We had close on 70 tackles for the game. “The contested ball and the 50-50 work – the boys didn’t concede any real easy ones to Spotty.” Sunshine had moments when it seemed an upset could be on the cards. third quarter. But Spotswood steadied to kick away in the fourth. Contessa rued some early misses in the first quarter when Sunshine was aided by a strong breeze. “We missed two or three really gettable shots and we went into the quarter-time break a couple of points up – but it could’ve been two or three goals,” he said. “It may have just shifted a bit of momentum.”
Big man Declan Moloney received praise for his part in an enthralling ruck duel with Spotswood star Murray Boyd. Moloney was forced to ruck all day with Sunshine’s No.1 ruckman Jesse McInneny out injured. “His competitiveness against Boyd in the ruck gave us an opportunity to win stoppages,” Contessa said. “You need big guys to step up and have a presence on the ground and he really did that.
“He took a few contested marks and really just busted his gut all day.” Fabian Brancatisano looked good in a new role for Sunshine. Usually a weapon across half-forward, Brancatisano was seen to have even more value to the Kangaroos by splitting his time between midfield and half-forward. “He’s a natural half-forward goalkicker, but we’ve had to change his game from what he’s been used to because we think he’s got that X-factor with his pace and can break the lines,” Contessa said. “He did it a number of times today – he kicked a goal, but he set up a few for us. “It’s a learning curve for him at the moment, playing on the ball … there’s a lot of upside for him in that role.” New signing Cam Holdsworth impressed on debut for Sunshine, finishing with a game-best four goals. Dillyn Fedley, another recruit, shone with his work in defence, while Harvey Daniher fought hard at centre half-back. Sunshine will play its home opener against Deer Park at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday. The Kangaroos will again go in as underdogs, but Contessa is adamant his side will not shirk the contest. “I know that the boys will be taking it on full steam ahead,” he said. “If we can bring that attack on the ball and the endeavour, you never know.” Lance Jenkinson

Keilor coach Mick McGuane was full of admiration for the return of Nick O’Kearney in Essendon District Football League premier division on Saturday. McGuane’s young charge made a healthy return to the field for the Blues – of paramount importance after a neck injury put his football career on hold in round 15 last season – and played a starring role in a 60-point win over Glenroy in the season opener at Sewell Reserve. “The way he assaulted the footy today, you would never have thought he had an injury of that magnitude,” McGuane said. “He was just a delight to watch.” O’Kearney was sorely missed by Keilor in last year’s grand final loss to Aberfeldie – just as the young midfielder desperately missed football during the time he spent on the sidelines. There was no holding back O’Kearney once he got the green light to return to training. O’Kearney’s fearless endeavour to training had McGuane thinking he would be impossible to keep out of the round one action.
“I’ve known this kid since he was probably 12 years of age and it means a lot to him to play the game and play with his mates again,” McGuane said. “I’ve been watching him at training the past four or five weeks … just watching his habits. You could tell he was going to put his hand up to play in the season opener. “Once we got through the last two weeks after his specialist cleared him, it was all systems go. “He had a standout game – kicked four, got a lot of possessions and used the ball well.” Keilor showcased its talent depth in the win over Glenroy. With a host of stars missing, McGuane had a chance to see how good the players underneath performed in the heat of a top-flight game. “We had a very young team,” McGuane said. “We had four first gamers … three of the boys played in their third senior game and another three who played 19, 17 and 13 games respectively. We knew it was going to be a challenging day at the office, so to come away
with winning the game by 10 goals was quite positive for the first game of the year.” Keilor’s leaders came to the fore. Dean Galea spearheaded the victory with eight goals and a number of selfless acts. “He kicked the goals that mattered and he always does,” McGuane said. “He was also a decoy at times, sliding in behind the opposition’s defence. “A lot of people wouldn’t see that – and think Galea wasn’t part of that forward passage and ask why. But he understands the game and sometimes you’ve got to be selfless.” Kane Barbuto was dominant at the clearances, while David Isbister was willing to put his body in the line of fire. Cavs kick into top gear By Lance Jenkinson Green Gully was at its damaging best in a 4-0 thrashing of Pascoe Vale in National Premier League soccer at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. The Cavaliers scored three second-half goals to get back into the winners’ circle for the first time in three weeks. Striker Alex Salmon moved into the golden boot lead, scoring a hat-trick to take his season tally to 10 goals in eight games. Cavaliers right back Jeremy Walker said it was his side’s most complete performance of the season so far. “Everyone on the pitch was at it today,” he said. “We were a bit more clinical and capitalised on everything, which is what we’ve been pushing for.” The opening eight rounds of the season have been a mixed bag for Green Gully. The Cavaliers are yet to truly indicate whether they are destined to contend for the title or settle on a mid-table finish, but their early form suggests last year’s relegation near miss was a scary once off. The Cavs’ best is as good as most in the competition, but that sort of form has found a way of eluding them in certain games. Walker is hopeful the strong showing against Pascoe Vale will see his side take strides towards more consistency. “That’s a start for us now,” he said. “Hopefully, we can push on with some winnable games in the near future.” Salmon was the talk of the Green Gully changerooms on Saturday night. The 24-year-old scored a wonderful headed goal on the back of a Jay Davies cross that put the Cavaliers in the lead midway through the first half. Salmon proceeded to knock in two more goals – both more elementary than his first goal – in the second half. Jordan Hall scored the Cavs’ other goal early in the second half. Walker said Salmon worked hard on his finishing – but there was more to his game than that. “He pops up and scores goals, but he also works hard for the team defensively,” he said. Walker has been one of Green Gully’s standout players in the opening two months. The 25-year-old school teacher is one of the Cavaliers’ hardest workers, using his defensive nous to detonate opposition attacks one minute and putting his speed and endurance to work to offer support to the attack the next. The Tasmanian is able to sustain his high-energy running for the full 90 minutes – a big reason why he enjoyed A-League time with Melbourne Heart and Perth Glory. Walker leads by example as vice captain of Green Gully.

Keilor Thunder has won four of its past five games to join the contending pack in Big V men’s state championship basketball. After its three-game winning streak came to an end with a narrow 85-79 loss to Hawthorn Magic on Saturday night, the Thunder bounced back with a stirring 94-86 win over Hume City Broncos at Keilor Basketball Stadium. Keilor held the lead at every change and went into the final quarter in total command. The Thunder got an even performance out of its starting five. Chris Kaba’s 19 points were the best among the starters, but it was BJ Symons’ 21 points off the bench that were the team’s best for scoring. Mike Anderson had a double-double for Keilor, finishing with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Joel Bellman impressed with 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Keilor will be back on their home court on Sunday, hosting the Chelsea Gulls from 3pm. In the women’s state championship, Keilor Thunder romped to a 95-70 road win over McKinnon Cougars. Erin Bollman had 30 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and five steals in a superb showing for the Thunder.
