Help needed for hospital By Tate Papworth The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital will soon open its doors and the hunt is on for volunteers. Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital co-ordinator of volunteers Michelle Dellios said 100 volunteers will be needed to help run the hospital. “We’ve been working on building our volunteer base for months, probably since construction on the building was halfway done,” Ms Dellios said.

“We’re seeking people who enjoy interaction with children, women and families and have a strong belief in inclusion and diversity.” Volunteers will be recruited to carry out a range of tasks, including activities for children in the outpatient clinics, supporting families of children undergoing surgery, and fundraising.

Ms Dellios said it was a great opportunity for those wanting to work in the health industry. “It’s very rewarding work,” she said. “Volunteers are very appreciated here at Western Health, so if people have spare time and like to work with children it’s a real opportunity. “It’s a particularly good opportunity for people who might want to become a midwifery nurse or speech therapist to come experience life in a hospital.” Ms Dellios said the hospital would like a solid commitment from volunteers.

“We ask people for a minimum commitment of 12 months,” she said. “Given the nature of the work, we need people prepared to be reliable, turn up every week and provide a service for the community.” The hospital will be holding information sessions next month. The first session will be held on Thursday, March 14 from 6-7pm and the second on Friday, March 22 from 10.30-11.30am at Sunshine Hospital. RSVP to volunteer@wh.org.au or 8395 9092. Councillor complaints dismissed By Tate Papworth A councillor conduct panel has dismissed complaints against former Brimbank mayor John Hedditch. The panel found the complaints, relating to conflict of interest and bullying behaviour – made by fellow councillor Bruce Lancashire – did not amount to serious misconduct and that there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations. During extraordinary scenes last month, two councillors were taken to hospital by

ambulance after experiencing medical issues while making submissions to the panel. Mayor Lucinda Congreve last week said the council remained united. “Brimbank City Council is pleased that the process has concluded and that the two participants can now move forward,” she said. “The application considered by the panel did not impact on the day-to-day functioning of Brimbank City Council. Council’s service provision to the community was not affected in any way. “Despite this process, all Brimbank city

councillors have remained united in working in the best interests of the community. “When I was elected mayor, I made a commitment to exceptional governance – and together with my fellow councillors, I will ensure this continues.” Cr Congreve lamented the fact that the hearing wasn’t kept behind closed doors. “Brimbank City Council would also like to express its disappointment in the strongest terms regarding the public sharing of confidential information relating to the councillor conduct panel, particularly

allegations of misuse of conflict of interest provisions,” she said. “This action had the effect of airing unsubstantiated and untested information which, apart from being proven to have no foundations in the panel’s findings, was personally damaging and distressing to parties in the process.” The panel said the council’s internal dispute resolution process for dealing with alleged code of conduct breaches lacked clarity. Cr Congreve said the council was reviewing the process.

Council set to stream meetings

An ‘amazing’ race brings Keilor joy Jara Konteh is on cloud nine after sprinting to victory in the 2019 120-metre Keilor Gift. The St Albans local had to overcome a string of hamstring injuries in the lead-up just to compete in the Victorian Athletic League event at the Joe Brown Recreation Reserve on Saturday night, but emerged unscathed to secure the title on an unforgettable night. Konteh crossed in a time of 12.495 seconds, beating Matt Burleigh and Kristerfer Kardakovski.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Konteh said. “The atmosphere was just amazing. “Really, we just went there with the intention of trying to recover from all of the hamstring injuries and enjoy the night. “The coach thought I had a good chance of winning and I just had to execute the race plan.” Konteh will use the triumph as a launching pad for a shot at the Stawell Gift. In the 120-metres women’s final, Bree Masters etched her name into the history books.

Masters was victorious in a time of 13.914 seconds, pipping Hannah Duynhoven and Liv Ryan. It was a huge night of festivities at the Old Calder Highway venue. Brimbank council will begin streaming its monthly meetings from this week. Following the approval of a council policy on streaming in October 2018, the first meeting of the new year on February 19 will mark the first steps into the new era. However, while the meetings will be filmed each month, they will not be live streamed, and will instead be uploaded to council’s YouTube and Facebook pages within five business days. Council’s advocacy partnerships and community director Dan Hogan said this would be done to ensure confidential or inappropriate items were not aired live. “During the actual meeting, recording may be terminated or interrupted if there are concerns about airing inappropriate or confidential information,” Mr Hogan said. “If this occurs, the streamed content will include advice to the community that an interruption to the recording has occurred. “Editing will not generally take place for streaming purposes unless in exceptional circumstances, for example if there are concerns about inappropriate information in filmed content, or if there have been technical difficulties in the filming process. “At all times council will advise if editing has taken place.” Council meetings will be available at www.youtube.com/c/ BrimbankCityCouncil

Solution for a Trickey road

By Tate Papworth The Western Ring Road Trail is popular with cyclists, walkers – and rubbish dumpers. A section of the track between Forrest Street and Ballarat Road in Ardeer is strewn with litter – and local resident Matt Bell says it’s been a problem for a long time. “I moved into the area in early September, 2018, and was looking forward to walking my dog at the parks along the creek,” Mr Bell said. “However, I quickly discovered part of the Ring Road track to be covered in rubbish. “There’s car parts, a TV, a grill, bags, everything down there.” Mr Bell said he contacted the Brimbank council about the problem. “I called council a few weeks ago and they sent someone to have a look,” he said. “They identified the area, but told me it was owned by VicRoads.” Mr Bell said he was told VicRoads had picked up the rubbish, but a walk with his dog proved that to not be the case. “VicRoads said they picked up the rubbish, so I went down there,” he said. “I’m not sure anything had been picked up – there was still rubbish everywhere.” VicRoads director metropolitan assets Fatima Mohamed said the land was not owned by VicRoads. “The site next to the M80 Ring Road Reserve is not managed by VicRoads,” Ms Mohamed said. “A long-term plan for the ongoing maintenance of this site is required and we’re happy to offer our expert advice to the council and the private land owner.” Mr Bell said that while the ownership puzzle grew so, too, did the mess. “If it’s allowed to continue like this it may just turn into a dumping ground,” he said.

Brimbank council has installed speed humps on a small stretch of road in Sydenham, following community safety concerns. Three speed humps were installed on Trickey Avenue, between Overton Lea Boulevard and Pecks Road. The area concerned is about 500 metres long, and includes residential homes, as well as the Arcare Aged Care Home, a childcare centre and a swimming school. Council infrastructure director Neil Whiteside said the speed humps were a response to a traffic survey in 2016, and feedback from residents. “Council is responding to community concerns about road safety in Trickey Avenue, Sydenham, by improving lighting and installing three road humps,” Mr Whiteside said. “The project follows a thorough investigation of road safety concerns raised with council in 2016 – including a road survey – which looked at the speed, volume and type of vehicles – crash data and police report incidents. “Cars frequently park on both sides of the road – which further impacts on safety.” The traffic survey showed 3573 vehicles used the road every weekday. Council sent a letter to residents, and of the 37 replies just five were against the project. The project will also include lighting upgrades and will cost $65,000 to complete. Ewen McRae

Sydenham fire

Firefighters quickly controlled a fire which engulfed a house on Beaumont Court in Sydenham last week. Crews were called to attend the single-storey brick house just after 3am on February 12, and had the fire under control about 12 minutes after arriving at the scene. About 24 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus at the scene were supported by CFA crews and Ambulance Victoria paramedics. There were no reports of injuries. Family and friends of residents at Arcare Hillside in Sydenham gathered for a day of fun on Saturday as they opened the new-look 5-star aged care residence. The residence hosted a community day full of activities, including meditation sessions, family portraits, a flower arranging workshop, and a Mariachi band. But the highlight of the day for many was a cooking demonstration from the residence’s award-winning head chef Romaney Morcos, who guided onlookers through the keys to his delicious pasta dishes. While Mr Morcos has had a varied career in restaurants around the world, he said preparing the meals for the residents in Sydenham over the past 10 years had brought him as much joy

Brimbank will be one of the first areas to trial the new Police Assistance Line when calling triple-0 or local police stations. Members of the public who call with an inquiry may be transferred to the Police Assistance Line at the discretion of the officer taking the call. This would only happen if the inquiry meets a certain criteria and police will inform the caller about the new service. The Police Assistance Line will take reports or give advice on non-urgent crimes and events, where direct police attendance is not time critical, including burglary, theft, property damage, and noise complaints. From July, the Police Assistance Line will be a dedicated, public phone number for people to report or get advice on non-urgent crimes and events any time of the day.

School reunion delights By Tate Papworth Just a few years into her teaching career, Natalie Brown met Joseph Pham. Mr Pham was a student in Ms Brown’s prep class at St Peter Chanel Primary School in Deer Park in 1997. Twenty-two years later, they have been reunited at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. Ms Brown is the school’s new community engagement co-ordinator and Mr Pham is a first-year teacher.

Ms Brown said they crossed paths during the school’s orientation earlier this year. “When we arrived on the first day, we both looked at each other and started laughing – it was amazing,” she said. Mr Pham recognised his former teacher, but was unsure of how to address her. “Nat saw my name on the sheet and then on orientation day we approached each other,” Mr Pham said. “I said, ‘Hello, Ms Brown’ and she said, ‘You ‘can call me Natalie now’ ”. Mr Pham is the first former student Ms Brown has crossed paths with as a teacher and she couldn’t be happier for him. “It’s really rewarding to see he’s gone down the education path and I’m really proud of who he is,” Ms Brown said. “I had a lovely relationship with his family, particularly his grandmother, which had a beautiful impact on me. That’s one of the great things about working in the west – the

people and the diversity out here is what’s kept me as a teacher this side of the city for all this time.” Mr Pham said that although it was 22 years ago, he still has fond memories of his former mentor.

“I was four-years-old … but I remember Natalie had a really strong relationship with me and my grandma,” Mr Pham said. “She was a real influence on my grandma, who was a real influence on me, which is a reflection on Natalie.”

Council wants gambling input Brimbank council wants feedback on its soon-to-be-finalised policy on electronic gambling. The policy sets out objectives, principles and statements for how the council will manage the impact, and reduce the harm, associated with electronic gambling in Brimbank. The policy has three main objectives; identifying gambling-related harms; reduce the prevalence of gambling; and increase the community’s understanding of gambling-related harms and reduce their reliance on gambling. The secondary aim of the policy is to examine online gambling and sports betting. Brimbank has recorded the highest losses on poker machines of any Victorian local government area for the past 10 years. The council says that while the levels of harm from online gambling and sports betting are significantly lower than poker machines, the level of participation in the form of gambling is growing rapidly. Feedback on the policy can be lodged up until 5pm on February 22. Feedback will be considered in an amended final draft of the policy for consideration by the council for adoption. On June 18, 2018, Ovessa HASSEN failed to appear on bail at the Sunshine Magistrates Court. A warrant for his arrest was issued for offences including theft of motor vehicle, handling stolen goods and unlicensed driving. Police are seeking information as to HASSEN’s current whereabouts. There are currently two warrants of apprehension in existence for Amara LANSANA. On February 24, 2016 a charge and warrant was issued at the Sunshine Magistrates Court for the offence of criminal damage. Another charge and warrant was issued on September 2, 2015 for the offence of possessing a dangerous article. Police are seeking information as to LANSANA’s current whereabouts. Drug paraphernalia being found on Brimbank streets is fuelling community concern over the use of recreational drugs known as “nangs”. Nangs is the common name for nitrous oxide canisters. A large pile of empty canisters was found in an Ardoyne Street carpark in Sunshine last week. Facebook user, Natalie, said: “I’m forever cleaning them up from out the front of the kinder.” Another Facebook user Jackie said: “... it’s pretty sad I think and I feel very sorry for the people who have to clean up and live close to it it’s just sad all round.” Brimbank local area commander Dallas Normington said while police were aware of the issue and were working to educate users, they had not noticed an increase in usage. “We’re not seeing a lot of this, but we are aware that there are people out in the community that are using these canisters,” Inspector Normington said. “Our real concern is that we’ve got people out there who are prepared to risk their health and safety by using these type of things. “And I’m not sure they have a real understanding as to the short and long-term impacts this can have on their health … people are placing their lives at risk by using these things.” Inspector Normington said police regularly confiscated the canisters from potential users, and tried to educate them and get them help. “It’s about talking to people about the risks

of these volatile substances and trying to steer them in a direction that they’ll be able to obtain the support and education they need,” he said. “We link in with council and other stakeholders, those with the understanding and the resources that can provide people with help on a long-term basis.” Brimbank council advocacy partnerships and community director Dan Hogan said they worked closely with a number of partners to help reduce the impacts of drugs. “Drug use is a significant problem that affects individuals, families and communities right across Australia,” he said. “Brimbank council recognises the importance of a harm minimisation approach to drug use in our community, and works with a number of partners and agencies to reduce the negative impacts of alcohol and other drugs.”

New rooms for Sunshine kindergarten

The first sod was turned on the extension to the Alexandra Avenue kindergarten in Sunshine last week. The $1.49 million extension will add two new rooms to the early childhood precinct, and is being jointly funded by Brimbank City Council ($940,080) and the Victorian government ($500,000). Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve and St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman visited the site last week for a ceremonial sod turn and to inspect the progress of the project. “We’re very happy to be able to partner with the Victorian government to deliver this project to the community,” Cr Congreve said “Brimbank council is committed to early years’ education and to providing quality service infrastructure for the community. “These new kindergarten rooms will provide more places to meet growing demand in the area, and add to the existing services and programs already available at the Alexandra Avenue Children’s Centre,” she said. The rooms will allow for more than 60 kindergarten students, and is expected to be completed later this year.

JDC Studios step it up By Ewen McRae For the fourth straight year, a Ravenhall dance studio has been crowned the best in the state. JDC Studios has been a high performer at the annual Kids Artistic Revue competition, and this year added to it’s impressive haul of accolades by taking out the Top Studio award for a fourth straight year, alongside a range of individual awards. It was also named as the regional champions in the Starpower Talent Competition.

Studio director Jason Di Cicco said it was a big tick for the work of everyone at the studio. “We believe in providing our students with top quality training and highly skilled teachers,” he said. “We offer all new students the opportunity to come down and trial our classes whether it be for fun, sit exams, or for students who want to compete in competitions.” Mr Di Cicco will now begin preparing a group of his dancers for their next challenge, performing at Disneyland in the US as well

as attending the Abby Lee Dance Company, which featured in the TV series Dance Moms. “In June last year I travelled to Las Vegas representing Melbourne as an international adjudicator for the American dance competition finals,” Mr Di Cicco said. “After seeing the American talent I thought it would be an amazing experience to travel to America later this year with my students.” JDC Studios will have an open week starting on February 25, with interested dancers getting the chance to come and trial the facilities.

When a home really is a castle By Tate Papworth Meet the king of the castle. Keilorâ€™s much-loved Overnewton Castle turns 170 this year and one man can be credited to helping to keep it standing. Dr Leslie Norton bought Overnewton Castle with his wife and young family in 1975, however the castle was in much different condition back then. â€œWhen we first came here it was nearly falling down,â€? he said.

â€œWe sort of fixed up the roof and dried the house out. We moved into one room, then that became two rooms and so on as we kept going. It took nearly 25 years to get it to where itâ€™s at today.â€? The castle was built by the iconic Scotsman William Taylor, who purchased the land in 1849. He initially built a simple single storey bluestone colonial-style homestead with six rooms with large shuttered windows and wide verandahs. However a trip to Scotland in 1859 left Taylor with grand plans. â€œWhen Mr Taylor went to Scotland for a holiday, Queen Victoria had just built Balmoral Castle, so everyone had to have a Scottish baronial house like that here,â€? Dr Norton said. â€œThatâ€™s why he came back with the plans for this.â€? The Scottish baronial style is visible throughout the house with rough textured

masonry, steep pitched roofs and overhanging battlement corner turrets. Taylorâ€™s influence is also still visible to this day â€“ the Taylor family crest â€“ a mailed arm and fist enclosing a dagger and the motto â€œSemper Fidelisâ€? (always faithful) â€“ proudly adorns the space above the window in the master bedroom.

Several other windows have Taylorâ€™s initials carved above them. Once complete, the once simple homestead consisted of more than 35 rooms, including seven bedrooms, a schoolroom, library, drawing room, two kitchens, five servants rooms and a billiards room. Many original features are still present

throughout the castle, such as tiles in the bathrooms, a claw-foot bath and an old wood stove in the kitchen. A bluestone butchery and dairy, lamp room, bootroom, coachhouse, stables, woolshed, shearing sheds and machine shed also still stand as outbuildings on the estate. William Taylor died in 1903 aged 85, and six

and big enough for us to have our kids here. Itâ€™s got a nice, warm atmosphere about it and was a great place to raise five children.â€? Dr Norton said living in such a high profile place has had a number of highlights over the years. â€œWeâ€™ve had quite a few films made here, which has always been exciting to see the hundreds of people that come along to help make the film up,â€? he said. â€œWe also had a fire in 1978 that hit the shed at the back of the house, but it didnâ€™t get to the house. â€œAlso around that time we had a big flood and the place was nearly cut off from Footscray.â€? Dr Norton said he hopes the castleâ€™s rich history is around for many years to come.

months later is wife Helen aged 71 passed away. Their eldest son William Henry continued to manage the estate until he died in 1939 aged 81 and his wife Beatrice in 1948. The estate remained in the Taylor family until 1959. Pet project cleaning up By Tate Papworth Candace Colaco has created a little project making a big impact. The 22-year-old’s passion for the environment has prompted her to create the Little Litter Project, which is helping clean up Brimbank’s parks and reserves. “About a year ago I’d take the Western Ring Road to come back from uni and I’d pass by the Calder exit where there’d be so much litter,” Ms Colaco said.

“I kept looking at it every day and after a month I called the council and VicRoads and they told me it was due to the roadworks going on there and it would be cleaned. “It just wasn’t getting done, so I thought if I started doing clean-ups locally, I might raise enough awareness to get bigger areas, like off the freeway, cleaned.” And that’s what Ms Colaco did. She began taking a bag out to her local parks and conducting regular clean-ups. After a while Ms Colaco decided to share her journey with the public. “I started cleaning local parks and decided to start a little blog to let people know about the clean-ups. “But I also post about waste management and things like that,” she said. “It’s made a little difference already, for example my friends now bring a metal straw when we go out and things like that.” Ms Colaco says she’s learnt a lot about being

The State Government has finally made a decision about land set aside at Derrimut to be used as cattle saleyards. Following a meeting between representatives of Sunshine, Altona and Werribee Councils and the Ministers for both Planning and Health to discuss the future Newmarket saleyards and whether they would be reconstructed at Derrimut, it was decided to retain Newmarket yards, and to … reduce the size of the Derrimut site.

More than 400 blocks of potential residential land with commanding views of the Maribyrnong River and the city are lying idle in Sunshine. The land is owned by about 400 people who are unable to build homes because their properties are zoned industrial instead of residential.

Residents in Taylors Lakes have issued a plea to the Brimbank council to closely monitor the actions of a rockblasting contractor following allegations of emotional trauma to their families, and structural damage to their homes.

Caroline Springs CFA first lieutenant Roy Worner was brought to tears sharing his experience of fighting the state’s worst bushfires. His volunteers were among thousands working tirelessly across the state. Mr Worner’s crews worked 15-hour shifts battling blazes in the Kilmore area.

I have been living in the western suburbs since 1974, most of that time in the Brimbank area. What do you like best about the area? The area is remarkably rich in cultural diversity and I like to imbibe other cultures. What could make the area better? Green areas with native trees and shrubs. Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in Brimbank? I love the restaurants around Sunshine and St Albans. How long have you been involved in the pottery classes at the Hunt Club, and how did you become involved? I have been running classes at the Hunt Club since 2008. What have been some of the highlights of your time running these classes? To know so many extraordinary, kind, artistic people along the years and see them flourish and reach their potential. I hear you are looking for more participants to ensure the classes continue to run, what is involved in the classes? In our lovely bright Pottery Studio, we run hand-building and wheel-throwing classes for adults and children. The classes cater to different levels from beginners to advanced and participants learn a variety of techniques ranging from pinch pots, coiling, slab work to sculptural forms and work turned on the wheel.

Each person is encouraged to make what they are interested in eg bowls, plates, cups, sculptures, and all works are fired. In term 1, Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning classes have been postponed until term 2 however we are taking expressions of interest and will run a class if there is sufficient

enrolments. The eight week Wednesday night and Friday morning programs for adults are both full. We are open for enrolments for “Play with Clay” a program for children 8-12 years starting Saturday, March 2. We will also run a no cost explore clay activity for young people at the Deer Park library during Youth Week,

On the Panjali menu, there’s dosas, vadai, dal and curries. But you’ll also find roti canai, mee goreng and nasi lemak. I cannot recall – in what is now many decades of trawling funky eats places all over Melbourne – any other eatery that so thoroughly, wonderfully expresses a particular school of transnational cooking, in this case Indian/Malaysian. Panjali has been open about three months and is popular – as I discover on a CTS reconnaissance trip for Sunday lunch. The service is warm and the prices are extremely cheap. It’s closed on Mondays, but other than that it keeps long opening hours. House-made curry puffs ($5 for two) are ungreasy and have a thick casing that is nevertheless good; the spud-based vegetable filling does the job. On my initial solo visit, I go for the eponymous banana leaf meal. When Nat Stockly and I return for a more in-depth exploration of the menu, he does the same. The basic banana leaf meal costs $9.90 and consists of a generous rice pile anointed with vegetable-studded dal, with various vegetable dishes arranged alongside, along with rasam, yoghurt, pickle and pappadams. For an extra $6, I top my meal up with a truly excellent and big fried chicken piece. For $8, Nat gets a serve of lamb curry. It’s quite good, but could’ve been a bit hotter. Nat opines that often the state of pappadams

I could eat them all day. Perhaps it could be said this kind of food is not for everyone – the vegetables (cabbage, beans, pumpkin, okra, broccoli) are cooked down to quite an extent. But the food and the place that serves it most certainly hit the spot with us, and will do likewise for dedicated CTS readers. From the noodle line-up, mamak mee goreng ($10.90) is simple, lovely and surprisingly dry – in a good way. No meat or seafood here, the dish getting its flavour kicks mostly from just cabbage and egg. The many tempting roti variations will have to wait for another visit. Instead we order chicken murtabak ($10.90). It’s tremendous in every way – hot and fresh; and delicate and hearty at the same. The stuffing is a great mix of onion, egg and shredded chicken. And I love the lightly pickled fresh onion served on the side for extra crunch. Four things Melbourne tenants and landlords should know Tenancy laws in Victoria cover more than 500 sections of legislation in the Tenancies Act, so it’s little wonder few tenants or landlords know it inside out. While most landlords do the right thing by their tenants, and many of the day-to-day rights are well known by both parties, several critical details in tenancy agreements are worth knowing. Here are some of the rights tenants might not know they have:

1. Steam-cleaning the carpet is not always mandatory

When tenants leave a rental property, they often believe or are told they must steam-clean the carpets when they vacate. However, in Victoria it is not always mandatory. Tenants Union of Victoria’s Yaelle Caspi says the Residential Tenancies Act states the tenant needs to “leave the property in a reasonably clean condition”. If you’ve made a mess of the carpet, get it steam-cleaned. If you haven’t, speak to your property manager. If a landlord fails in their duty to repair a property or undertake maintenance, it isn’t just a gripe that a tenant should sweep under the rug. In fact, renters have a right to be compensated by their landlord if they are not carrying out their duties under the act. “This is true, too, if the tenant’s quiet enjoyment of the property has been disturbed by the landlord repeatedly coming to the property without proper notice, or by holding too many open-house inspections,” Caspi says.

SPORT On-song Saints well and truly alive St Albans Saints could not have asked for a better start to the 2019 National Premier League 2 west season. They slaughtered Whittlesea Ranges 6-0 on the road at Epping Stadium on Saturday, with new recruits making significant contributions. Saints coach Kruni Razov was pleasantly surprised after witnessing 90 minutes of ruthless football from his side. “As a coach, you couldn’t ask for a better start,” he said. “It was fantastic.” The rout began early when new recruit Adam Hodor put St Albans ahead in the 19th minute. The Saints’ lead doubled just before half-time through captain Michael Grgic. There was more domination in the second half, with new recruits Jordan Wilkes and Ayodeji Omoboye finding the back of the net for St Albans before substitute Joseph Monek came on to complete the job with a double. Razov was delighted to see St Albans’ tough pre-season pay dividends.

“The boys were happy with themselves and it’s pleasing for a coach,” he said. “After your players do 12 weeks of hard pre-season, you don’t know what you’re going to get in round one, so it’s good for them.” St Albans will host Moreland City in its home opener at Churchill Reserve on Sunday. In top-flight NPL, it was a successful weekend for both of Brimbank’s clubs. Melbourne Knights caused an upset on Friday, beating Oakleigh Cannons 2-1 away after a double from striker Hamish Watson. Green Gully Cavaliers claimed all three points after a second-half goal from Alex Salmon secured a 1-0 win over newly promoted Altona Magic on Saturday. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ You know your suburb has arrived when you are mentioned almost daily in traffic accident reports and you get your own football team. Welcome the Truganina Thunder to the WRFL – and it is pronounced Trug-a-nine-a. The club will field teams in the junior competition in the under-8, 9, and 10 boys and under-10 girls based out of the ground at Mainview Boulevard. The club has been born out of the Auskick program, which is the natural progression needed for sustainable growth. In the past, clubs have fast-tracked senior teams and paid – and in some cases, continue to pay – the price. The Thunder is the 35th club to compete in the WRFL. I wish it the best for the future. ■ AFLX confuses me – not because of comic book team names, unique rules and playing conditions or the game-changer player role. I am confused because I can’t work out why it exists. If fans need a footy fix they have AFLW to watch. There are practice matches in the next few weeks if fans want to see the men going around and most clubs have open training sessions and match simulation to watch, as well. So what void does AFLX fill? I agree it takes both potential publicity and funding away from the women’s competition. I doubt any players will be reflecting on their AFLX premiership medal and tattoo in a decade. ■ There was another successful meeting for local track athletes at the Keilor Gift last weekend, with Jarod Sutton winning the 400-metre novice event and Nathan Burfitt saluting in the 1600-metre front-marker handicap. Megan McMahon and Jody Richards have been outstanding performers on the circuit over summer, giving veteran coach Terry McGarity plenty to smile about. All four have local football connections through umpiring and clubs and Nathan has been senior team manager at Deer Park for a number of years.

All smiles after top Gift By Lance Jenkinson It was the 12 exhilarating seconds that made Jara Konteh’s recovery from 11 hamstring injuries worth all the sweat and tears. Konteh stood proudly on the podium as the 2019 Keilor Gift champion on Saturday night after swooping on first place in the final at Joe Brown Recreation Reserve. The St Albans resident could not contain his delight post-race, with his beaming smile illuminating the stage. “To live that moment and be crowned the Keilor Gift winner is pretty amazing,” Konteh said. “There was so much adrenalin pumping. “Being able to perform in front of that crowd and be recognised for your efforts – it’s an amazing feeling.” Konteh endured a hellish 2018 season. Chosen for the world junior athletics championships, the 19-year-old succumbed to the hamstring injuries that have plagued his past three seasons. “I’ve done 11 hamstrings – five on the left and

six on the right,” he said. “The determination to wear the green and gold just keeps me going. “That’s my dream – I’ve always had it since I was young.” Konteh made the tough decision to split with former coach Steven Gaffney recently. He described Gaffney as a “great man” who had been influential in his running career. But after so many injuries, Konteh needed a change of coach and some new ideas – he found guidance in the form of Scott Rowsell. “He [Gaffney] was completely all right with it,” Konteh said. “He’s the guy that really got me into the sport, so I’m grateful for that. “I made the switch of coaches as I figured out that I’d try something new.” Incredibly, the Keilor Gift was Konteh’s first Victorian Athletic League meeting. His only other Gift race was in Devonport, Tasmania, which ended in him hobbling away with a hamstring injury. If Konteh pulls up well after Keilor, he will turn his attention to this Saturday’s Geelong

Gift, which he will use as a launching pad for a possible shot at the Stawell Gift. A talented sportsman, Konteh’s long-term dream is to represent Australia as a sprinter. He had the potential to be a good rugby union or rugby league player, but athletics is his favourite sport. “I used to play multiple sports when I was young – you could call me an all-rounder,” he said. “I was pretty good at rugby and soccer – mainly rugby. I was supposed to try out for the Storm and Rebels junior teams, but I turned it down for the love of running.” Konteh had massive support from family and friends at Keilor, who he thanked after the race. His greatest supporter, long-time girlfriend Rose Nguyen, was unfortunately absent due to work. “She just came off a flight – she’s a flight attendant – and I told her of the win and she started screaming in the airport,” Konteh said.

■ Any cricket team going into the last fortnight of the regular season with a slim chance of finals action needs only look to Sri Lanka’s Test win over South Africa last week for inspiration. Yarraville Club Cricket Club’s first XI heads in to its last VTCA Turner Shield game of the year against Strathmore knowing not even that kind of resilience will help it. It will miss finals after losing to Sunshine United.

Saints’ prayers are answered with last-minute thriller St Albans’ season was at the crossroads in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division on Saturday. The Saints’ aspirations for the rest of the summer hinged on the result of its mouth-watering fourth-versus-fifth battle with Spotswood at Donald McLean Reserve on Saturday. A thrilling 12-run victory was enough for the Saints to not only stave off the threat of relegation, but also have one foot in the finals with one round to play. Saints captain Rob Nikolic was delighted with the outcome of what he described as his side’s “biggest game of the year”. “There were two sides to it,” he said. “If we lost, we would’ve been back down in a relegation scrap, but if we won, we’d be safe from relegation and looking towards playing finals. “It’s just a relief to get the win.” This was not just a win for St Albans, it was a test of its character. Playing away to Spotswood is hard any time,

but when you win the toss, elect to bat and your top order crumbles to be 4-19, your odds are significantly weakened. But St Albans dug deep and found a way back into the contest on the back of stellar batting from Shanaka Silva and Billy Whitford. Silva kept calm to make 72 off 116 balls and Whitford made 37 off 59, during their 84-run fifth wicket partnership. “They just batted time and they did it quite risk free,” Nikolic said. “They both had very composed innings and batted a long time to get us back into the game and set us up where we could send in some blokes who can hit a ball late in the innings.” It allowed Tom Langley-Dunn to come in later in the innings with a carefree approach and produce some fireworks. Langley-Dunn made 32 off 24, including two big sixes that were the difference in the game. “We knew if he could get his eye in, he’d do some damage at the end,” Nikolic said. St Albans was content with its 7-175 off 40 overs.

The Saints were feeling a little uneasy about their standing in the game though when Spotswood advanced to 2-95. Once they removed Woodsman top scorer Ross Horkings for 44, the dominos began to fall. St Albans found a host of avenues to wickets with Whitford, Silva, Langley-Dunn and Geeth Alwis snared two wickets apiece, but more importantly built pressure through dot balls. Spotswood was strangled so hard it fell short of victory, finishing on 9-163 off its 40 overs. “It was a real hard-fought win, real gritty,” Nikolic said. St Albans will visit Keilor in the last round knowing a victory will seal their finals spot. Keilor is licking its wounds after a 116-run loss to Strathmore at Syd McGain Oval. Sunshine United is still a chance of finishing in the top four after ending the finals aspirations of two-time defending champions Yarraville Club in an edge-of-your-seat one-wicket win. Calder United has claimed a three-peat of Football Victoria women’s community shield titles. United made it three in a row on Friday night at Green Gully Reserve with a 3-1 win over FC Bulleen Lions in the traditional season opener. Catherine Zimmerman scored a double for Calder before Polly Doran added a third. The Lions pegged a goal back through Kayla Morrison, but it was too little too late. Calder will open its women’s NPL campaign with a home game against Alamein at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Lions could only muster a paltry 145 with Lachlan Marr top-scoring with 44. Big leap for martial star By Lance Jenkinson Making his entrance into taekwondo at age four, Cameron Moyes has spent more than a decade on the mat – but he will look back on 2018 as his break-out year. The 15-year-old from Hall’s Taekwondo jetted to three overseas destinations for major tournaments and reeled in a swag of medals. “It was a very big year, my biggest year yet,” Moyes said. “Last year, I was at the top of the cadet division, which is an age group between 12 and 14, and I was 14. “That gave me some confidence going across the world. I knew it was going to be the best opportunity before I lead into the juniors division [age 15 to 17].” Moyes relished not just the thrill of success, but also the chance to travel and meet new people. “I love the travel,” he said. “Going to different countries for tournaments and meeting a lot of people is a great experience. It’s great to get out and see new things and look at how other

countries do it to improve my learning. It’s just an overall amazing experience.” Moyes was a serious competitor in all the events that he entered. Facing the world’s best, the Hoppers Crossing martial artist came fifth at the World Poomsae Championships in Taipei. A tricky draw did not help Moyes, but the experience of facing the world’s best was unforgettable. “I fought the actual winner of the world championships in the first round, so that was pretty tough,” he said. “It was pretty unlucky to get him, but still it was a great experience.” Moyes had great success at regional events. His time in Tahiti at the Oceania Championships and the President’s Cup yielded a medal haul in individuals, pairs and teams events. The Westbourne Grammar School year 10 student reaped three gold in poomsae and a silver medal in sparring at the President’s Cup, then three gold medals in poomsae and a bronze medal in sparring. Moyes also claimed a bronze medal at the European championships in Spain in poomsae.

It was a remarkable effort considering he was battling jet lag and had limited sleep. Moyes, who got his start at City West Taekwondo, is ready to make his transition into the juniors division this year. He is targeting strong performances at the President’s Cup and Australian Open – both events will take place on the Gold Coast. “Hopefully, I can learn as much as I can so when I’m 16, 17, at the top of the age group, it can be a big year for me again,” Moyes said. He trains four days a week with coaches Jihun An and Jerry Moraitis at Hall’s Taekwondo and puts in extra sessions at home. Moyes is the February nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Moyes will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist him in achieving his sports goals.

Sunshine Eagles ended the weekend in second spot on the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 ladder. The Eagles enjoyed a resounding 11-1 win over Berwick City Cougars on the road on Saturday to strengthen their bid for a top-two finish. The two sides will meet again in the final round on Saturday at Barclay Reserve.
