Labor holds the west By Ewen McRae and Tate Papworth Labor retained its hold on the west at the weekend’s state election. The ALP experienced significant swings in its favour across the state and Brimbank was no exception. Natalie Suleyman stormed to a resounding victory in the seat of St Albans. With more than 70 per cent of votes counted, Ms Suleyman held 71 per cent of the two-party preferred votes – a 3.8 per cent swing in favour of the ALP. It promises to be a busy next four years for Ms Suleyman, who last week joined Premier Daniel Andrews in pledging to remove three “dangerous and congested” level crossings in Deer Park and Sunshine West (Ardeer), and to upgrade Deer Park train station, if re-elected.

There was a really good feeling at the polling - Natalie Hutchins booths
’’
In the seat of Sydenham, Family Violence Minister Natalie Hutchins enjoyed a smaller one per cent swing towards her party to comfortably return to Parliament for a third term. Ms Hutchins said the result was a ringing endorsement of Labor’s family-friendly policies for the area. “It feels great to be re-elected, and there was a really good feeling at the polling booths I visited,” Ms Hutchins said. “I never take it for granted, but there were a lot of people really impressed with the level crossing removal on the Melton Highway, and we’ve made a commitment for more car parking at Watergardens that I think was really well received. “There’s a big agenda ahead. Getting people home from work quicker and spending more time with their families is a key to a lot of our policies. “I don’t think we can underestimate that there are a lot of families out there who are financially struggling and things like free dental care for kids is going to go a long way to support them. “The opposition campaigned pretty hard in my seat around crime, and I think people recognised that our number one crime issue is actually family violence, and that’s an area our government has made a huge investment and I’m looking forward to continuing to do a lot of work in that area in the future.”

In the seat of Footscray – which includes parts of Sunshine, Sunshine West and Braybrook – Labor’s Katie Hall will take over from retiring MP Marsha Thomson, who has represented the area since 2006. Ms Hall strengthened the Labor Party’s hold on the seat, with a 14.7 per cent swing her way delivering a commanding victory. Meanwhile, Ben Carroll has reclaimed the seat of Niddrie with a six per cent swing in his

“We’ve seen positive results right across the state and it shows what a positive agenda can achieve.” In the seat of Kororoit, Gambling Minister Marlene Kairouz has increased her lead in the seat following a 6.1 per cent swing her way. While Ms Kairouz already had a healthy lead in the seat, Labor now enjoys 76.1 per cent of the votes to make it one of the safest seats in the state.

Airport rail link a ‘capital’ idea By Ewen McRae Sunshine will become the capital of the west when the airport rail link is completed – that’s the prediction of Brimbank council. The federal government last week endorsed plans for an airport rail link running through Sunshine, backing both the state government and opposition in making the Sunshine route the preferred option for the long-awaited project. Federal government support for the Sunshine route could see the project begin as soon as 2020.
Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the vote of support for Sunshine was very satisfying. “The fact that the federal and state governments, as well as state opposition, agree that the Sunshine route is the best option for all Victorians demonstrates commendable bipartisanship,” Cr Congreve said. “The Melbourne Airport Rail Link, with a stop at Sunshine, will deliver critical infrastructure with significant benefits not just for Melbourne’s west, but for residents and businesses across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
“Council has advocated for the Sunshine route because of its tremendous potential to boost economic development across the west and maximise existing rail connections with metro Melbourne and the whole of western Victoria. “This option also has the potential to deliver enormous benefits to our local community, businesses and stakeholders – with a Sunshine Super Hub cementing Sunshine’s position as the CBD of the west.” The huge infrastructure project was kick-started by a $5 billion commitment from the federal government in its May budget, with
the state government also pledging an initial $5 billion towards the project. The project is expected to cost between $8 billion and $13 billion. Cr Congreve said the council would work with state and federal stakeholders, as well as the local community and businesses, to ensure the new route was a success. “We need consultation and engagement with our local residents, businesses and other stakeholders, along with considered planning, to ensure the hub is connected to the west through an integrated road and public transport network,” she said.

Year 8 student Jude was nominated for an In2science Award in mathematics. (Shawn Smits)
State maths honour all adds up A year 8 Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student with an aptitude for maths has claimed finalist status in a statewide award. Jude was nominated for an In2science Award after taking part in the mentoring program. In2science is run by RMIT, La Trobe, Melbourne and Monash universities and Swinburne Institute of Technology for students undertaking a STEM course. Vinh Pham, from RMIT, spent 10 weeks at the Braybrook college working with students. At the end of his placement, Vinh and the
college maths teacher nominated Jude as an “outstanding student mentee” for his engagement, effort and outcomes. Jude said it was a nice surprise to find out he’d been nominated. “I didn’t actually know we could get an award from this, so it was a surprise for me,” he said. Jude and his family attended the award ceremony at Melbourne Museum last week. He said it was a positive experience even though he didn’t take out the top gong. “Vinh taught me a lot about algebra and
linear graphs,” he said. “He was a really good teacher. He knew what he was doing and was very supportive.” While Vinh helped Jude improve his skills, his strong interest in maths helped his progress. “Maths and English are my two favourite subjects,” Jude said. “I like the relationship between numbers and problem solving.” Details: in2science.org.au
Lighting upgrades at three Brimbank sporting fields will go ahead next year, allowing for greater levels of sport and recreation participation. Brimbank council last week awarded a contract for sports ground lighting upgrade works at Churchill Reserve in St Albans, and Ainsworth and Ralph reserves in Sunshine West. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the three projects would provide substantial improvements to the enjoyment of participants at the venues. “This project will invest approximately $990,000 in sports ground lighting improvements to soccer pitch No. 3 at Churchill Reserve, the football oval at Ainsworth Reserve, and the soccer pitch at Ralph Reserve,” Cr Congreve said. “This will increase the grounds’ capacity and will serve the clubs well for training and competition. “Council expects the lighting upgrades across the three sports reserves will continue to boost participation in sport for people of all ages, abilities and gender. “This is important work – we know that improvements to sport facilities have a real and measurable impact on participation and levels of physical activity – supporting everyone in our community to live healthy and active lives. “The lighting upgrade works will provide increased opportunity for sport and recreation and better access for the wider community.” The upgrades are expected to be completed by early June, 2019. Hot property in St Albans By Tate Papworth Nobody told St Albans buyers that property prices are falling. A dated 1950s property at 20 Collins Street sold for $1.28 million recently – $311,00 above reserve. Ray White real estate agent Lam Nguyen said the result took even him by surprise. “We had a number of bidders turn out for auction and even had people fly over from Vietnam to bid, so we were hopeful of getting around the $1 million mark,” Mr Nguyen said.
‘‘
People tend to hold on to properties in Collins - Lam Nguyen Street
’’
“But it did surprise us that it went above reserve as much as it did.” The three-bedroom house on about 622-square-metres had belonged to the same owner since it was built – with Mr Nguyen saying the rarity of sales in the street may have played a role in the sale price. “You can feel the heat of the cooling market, but there’s still more good purchases to be had in St Albans,” he said. “People tend to hold on to properties in Collins Street, so this proved to be a rare opportunity.” Mr Nguyen said the buyer had local connections and had yet to determine what to do with the property. Mr Nguyen said the fact the property sat within the Residential Growth Zone and was within walking distance of everything St Albans offered made it incredibly desirable. While the market may be cooling, St Albans

isn’t unfamiliar with high sale prices. A four-bedroom house on 590-square-metres at 73 Alfrieda Street recently smashed its reserve by $620,000 to fetch a suburb record price of $2.52 million.
Mr Nguyen said the suburb was the strongest in the area he covered. “St Albans is our biggest suburb,” he said. “It’s a desirable location and offers a lot of opportunities for prospective buyers.”

Third runway process stalls Public exhibition of Melbourne Airport’s plans for a third runway has been temporarily grounded. The plans were due to go on public display at the beginning of next month, but the airport last week advised it will happen next year following recent planning changes and a failure to meet internal deadlines. Australia Pacific Airports Melbourne chief of aviation Simon Gandy said a specific date had yet to be set. “Writing a major development plan is a consultative process that sees us working closely with stakeholders, from regulators to airline customers to the local community,” he said. “It’s important that the plan is thorough to ensure it’s based on the best, most accurate information available – so we’re taking the appropriate time to get it right. “Following initial feedback and some recent planning changes, we want to take the time to ensure that this information is incorporated into the planning and development of this critical asset.” The airport said it was reaching capacity on its current crossing runway system and by 2020 demand from airlines would exceed capacity. In 2016-17, Melbourne Airport experienced 117 weekdays with on-time morning peak performance of 75 per cent or less. Tate Papworth

Brimbank council picked up two awards at the recent Planning Institute of Victoria awards night. The council took home awards for planning excellence in the Public Engagement & Community Planning category for its Plan Brimbank campaign earlier this year. The campaign included an interactive game that asked for feedback across a number of broad land use and planning themes. The council also won an award for Improving Planning Processes and Practices for its new online payment tool. The council will be considered for the PIA National Awards, to be announced on the Gold Coast on May 15, 2019.

Wire thefts ‘cripple’ sports clubs By Tate Papworth Frequent copper thefts across Brimbank are taking a heavy toll. In the past year, there has been a high volume of thefts of copper cabling across the municipality, including three incidences in October, Brimbank council says. Brimbank infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the thefts were crippling local sports clubs. “Many of these copper cabling thefts have occurred at community sports grounds where
floodlighting has recently been installed,” Mr Whiteside said. “Not only do these thefts come at a significant financial cost to the community – currently over $300,000 in insurance claims have been lodged – they can also heavily impact the amenities and the users of these grounds. “In some instances, where sports ground lighting has been affected, night training sessions have either been cancelled or last-minute alternative arrangements made. “Clubs have further been burdened by needing to manage the logistics associated
with putting temporary and unexpected arrangements in place and having to let people know of changed circumstances.” In June, Star Weekly reported that up to 10 sports clubs had been hit by a spate of copper wire thefts across Melton and Brimbank. They included wire valued at an estimated $130,000, stolen during seven thefts at sports grounds across Brimbank between August, 2017 and April, 2018. Mr Whiteside said a number of strategies were being put in place by the council to tackle the problem.
“Since the first incidence of copper cabling theft, council has been working with the police on a number of preventative strategies, including surveillance and the installation of security equipment in an attempt to counter the problem,” he said “Council will continue to work with the police on deterrents and enforcing tough penalties.” Mr Whiteside is urging community members to keep an eye out and report suspicious activity to the police or by phoning the council on 9249 4000.
Listening beat for police Brimbank police officers descended on shopping centres, train stations and other public spaces last week in an effort to gather insights and details about safety issues affecting the community. The initiative – called Community Safety Networks – is a partnership project between Victoria Police, Victorian government, Crime Stoppers Victoria and Neighbourhood Watch. Brimbank police officers were at Keilor Central last Tuesday to begin four days of community engagement in which they spoke with residents, business owners and commuters. Brimbank Local Area commander Dallas Normington said police officers loved increasing their community connections. “We’ll be speaking to people right across Keilor, Deer Park, Cairnlea, Sunshine, St Albans and Taylors Lakes … this is an opportunity for them to have a say on the key issues within
Brimbank,” Inspector Normington said. “We know that people have great insight into their local community and ideas about other ways to prevent crime. “Issues identified during this engagement activity will inform the development of local projects and initiatives to help improve community safety.” The Community Safety Networks initiative kicked off last year with sessions held in Wyndham, Melton, Whittlesea, Cardinia, Latrobe and Ballarat. The second round included Brimbank, Dandenong, Frankston, Knox, Shepparton and Geelong. Brimbank ramps up pokies fight By Ewen McRae
“Brimbank is home to some of Melbourne’s most disadvantaged communities,” Cr Congreve said. “Yet year after year, Brimbank experiences the highest EGM losses in Victoria. “We need to take action to reduce the harms that these losses bring to our community.” The draft policy’s goals are identifying gambling-related harms, reducing the prevalence of gambling, increasing community understanding of gambling-related harms and reducing the reliance on gambling. The policy includes opposing any licensing applications for new or transferred EGMs, disallowing
Brimbank council’s fight against the harm caused by pokies is continuing with a draft policy aimed at reducing gambling losses. Brimbank has long held the unenviable title of the state’s biggest loser when it comes to pokies, with $382,000 a day lost on the machines in the past financial year. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the policy “aimed to reduce the economic, social and health harms associated with Electronic Gaming Machines (EGMs).”
any new EGMs on council-owned land and working with current EGM operators to reduce community harm. Much of the debate at last week’s council meeting centred on two clubs that operate EGMs on council land – St Albans Sports Club and Green Gully Soccer Club. Cr Congreve said that while such clubs provided many benefits to the local community, those benefits had to be balanced against the harm caused by EGMs and the need to combat those harms. “Council recognises that gambling is a legal
A very wet court case Ms Mayoh said. “We put a drier in for the carpet, but it absolutely stunk afterwards. “We’re going to have to put a claim in for new carpet, but how can we do that with the drainage the way it is? We’ll be putting in a claim each time it rains. “We had our club champion awards and not one person was in the clubrooms.” Ms Mayoh said that while heavy rain fell only a few times a year, it was an inconvenience the club shouldn’t have to deal with. “This has been an issue for as long as I’ve been president here,” she said. “The council keep telling us they’re looking at things, but we just want it fixed.”
Keilor Tennis Club’s courts looked more like swimming pools after heavy rain last week. Heavy downpours across a number of days left the club’s four courts ankle deep in water. Club president Lisa Mayoh said the drainage at the club was inadequate and in need of replacing. “We’ve been asking the council to do something about the drainage for three to four years,” she said. “Each time we have heavy rain, it gets worse and worse. “The water was ankle deep [last week] and took a good couple of days to disappear,” Ms Mayoh said. She said once the flood had drained away it left a black slime across the courts, forcing the club to purchase sand to soak it up. Finals matches scheduled to be played at the club on Wednesday and Thursday last week had to be cancelled because of the damage. “The clubrooms were also saturated,”

Units rejected over ‘character’ By Ewen McRae Brimbank council has knocked back a planning permit for an Albion development after a community outcry. While council officers endorsed the development at 63 Derrimut Street, Albion, a community petition against it prompted councillors to deny the permit. The development would have included five double storey units replacing a single storey weatherboard dwelling. Council officers recommending approving
the permit, however councillor John Hedditch proposed an alternate motion to refuse the permit, saying it was “out of character with the area” and was an “over development of the land”. “We met with residents on the site, and there was a whole range of local area issues identified around the impact on the street,” Cr Hedditch said. “We have a real range of problems here, especially the massing of five small homes on the one thin site is seen as problematic.” Cr Virginia Tachos also spoke against
approving the permit. “I’ve read the 19 objections, and they all tend to say that there is that character of the area that is an issue and they want that retained,” she said. “We’re talking about respecting our local amenities. “This is a family area that is already busy, and five properties on the one block is not in keeping with the local character.” Cr Bruce Lancashire supported approving the permit, saying it met all the requirements under the planning scheme.
“I support the recommendation of the officers. I believe they have done their job very well and responsibly, and negotiated a very good result for this development,” he said. “It complies with the requirements [and] it also fits into the neighbourhood character of the area. “In terms of affordable housing, going from one house to five is all about providing and improving affordable housing for our residents.” The permit was refused by a vote of eight to two.

Assistant principal Vineta Mitrevski said the nomination was recognition for a lot of hard work. “We’re a small school and we’re up against schools three times the size of us,” she said. “We know we’re on the right track … just because we’re smaller doesn’t mean we have any less passion. “We’ve got the right people, with the right purpose in the right place … to be named as one of three finalists out of over 7000 applicants is vindication.” The list of more than 7000 applicants was narrowed down to 30 candidates, with Monmia named as one of three finalists.
Ms Mitrevski believes the school was nominated for its dedication to transforming its culture into one of continuous improvement. She credited its success to a vision embraced by the whole school community. “There is a strong focus on learning for all and equal value given to achievement, engagement and wellbeing,” Ms Mitrevski said. “Staff work in collaborative cultures in high-performing teams ensuring all students achieve their individual goals. “Our Naplan results have soared and we think this success should be celebrated.” Details: education.vic.gov.au/about/awards/ Pages/veea.aspx Tate Papworth Monmia Primary School staff Tan Ly, Mandy Peters, Lucia Vorpasso, Vineta Mitrevski and Kathryn Buthgieg. St Albans plan is all business A plan to jump-start St Albans business activity has been released for community consultation. Brimbank council unveiled its Go St Albans plan at last week’s meeting, with mayor Lucinda Congreve saying it was an important part of the ongoing work to revitalise the area. “St Albans Town Centre is already a vibrant and multicultural centre of which we’re very proud, with a thriving business mix,” Cr Congreve said. “We want to attract even more people to visit, shop, work, study and live there. “One of our Go St Albans program priorities is to prepare a business plan that will take the centre to its full potential by building on the centre’s strengths, capitalising on opportunities and addressing challenges. “Council wants to grow St Albans into a place that offers quality services and facilities to residents, employment for the local community and a place that draws visitors from across Melbourne’s west for its fresh produce and quality eating, and cultural and recreational activities.” The short-term priorities of the plan include finalising the Collins Street master plan, a carpark management plan, evaluating CCTV in the centre and preparing a plan for the Alfrieda Street pop-up-park. Feedback on the proposed Go St Albans plan can be provided at brimbank.vic. gov.au/have-your-say until January 17.

Sunshine West park win By Tate Papworth Dalton Street Reserve in Sunshine West is to be revamped. The park will receive a full circuit path for walking and jogging, with exercise equipment along the way, as part of the government’s Community Support Fund. The upgrade had earlier this year been submitted as part of the state’s Pick My Project initiative but was unsuccessful. The $200,000 project was recently approved after lobbying by Katie Hall, who was elected Footscray MP at the weekend.
Ms Hall said it was a win for the community. “I’m passionate about the provision of high-quality, public open spaces,” she said. “I loved this project idea and when it wasn’t successful in the Pick My Project grant round, I lobbied for funding. “This will keep Sunshine West kids active and outdoors.” The upgrade will include a children’s play space, signage to educate visitors about the park environment and art installations. St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said it was time for the well-used park to get an upgrade. “This funding will make the much-loved
Dalton Street Reserve an even better place to get active,” she said. The Pick My Project bid was submitted by local resident Michael Smith. “I … come here quite a bit with the kids. I thought the place could do with some natural kids play themes like rocks and logs,” Mr Smith said last week. “There’s lots of elderly residents too, so to provide them with path to walk the park makes it multi-generational. “I’d given up when it wasn’t selected in Pick My Project, so I was ecstatic when Katie got in touch.”

Simone, Maria, Georgia, Angela, Jolene and Jotthe with the buddy bench. (Dennis Manktelow)
Buddy good bench design A special place for fostering friendship has taken pride of place at St Lawrence Primary School. VCAL students at neighbouring Marian College donated a buddy bench to the school with the hope that it will help create many friendships in coming years. The Marian College students spent the past term decorating the bench as part of a project to expand their personal development skills. Buddy benches, a concept that began overseas, are placed in school grounds so students who are feeling lonely or need someone to talk to can get support. St Lawrence Primary School learning assistant Maryanne Said believes the bench will have a positive impact at the school.
“We’re really happy to receive the bench,” she said. “It’s a great idea for students who might be struggling on the playground. “We had kids sitting on it right away, which was really good to see – they get together, have a chat and probably don’t realise it’s evolving into something else.” The bench has been placed in front of the school’s discovery centre. “The bench is obviously moveable, but we decided to place it in front of the discovery centre so we’d be able to keep an eye on the students who are going there and to make sure they’re doing OK,” Ms Said said. Dad inspires a champion boxer By Goya Dmytryshchak
‘‘
I remembered that grief … I think it really - Sylvia Scharper pushed me
’’
(Damjan Janevski)
If You Could See Me Now – that’s the song world champion boxer Sylvia Scharper thinks of when she enters the ring and remembers her father. The Footscray boxer lost her dad when she was a teenager after he went into hospital to await a heart transplant and experienced complications. “I was pretty lost for a good 10 years,” she said. She started doing Thai boxing, which reminded her of sparring in the backyard with her father, before switching to boxing. “It ended up being a way that I processed my grief,” Scharper said. “Maybe … it was a bit of rage gone into something productive because I felt pretty robbed. “When you fight, you’re pretty vulnerable and your character and your strength and your self-belief all come out in that process – and it was sort of then that I realised how stuck I was. “Dad was my No.1 fan so I kind of had to build myself up again on my own.” Scharper, 36, has been immortalised in Relentless: The Sylvia Scharper Story Story, a film from Welcome Stranger Productions directed by Altona Meadows’ Aaron Ellis and produced by Taylors Lakes’ Lester Ellis jnr. It follows their documentary about Graeme “Porky” Brooke, Stolen Glory: The Tale of Porky Brooke, which has been acquired by SBS. In 2015, Scharper had her first shot at world title glory, but fell short to Marnelle Verano of the Philippines. Believing Scharper was a world champion in the making, Aaron Ellis started following her with a film camera. In March last year, she went up against Queenslander Kori Farr for the Women’s
International Boxing Association world bantamweight title. The fight resulted in a draw – which Scharper described as another of the most devastating moments in her life. Ellis had planned to stop filming after the fight, but decided a draw wasn’t a good note to end on – so he kept the camera rolling. The week before Scharper had another attempt at the world title, Ellis showed her footage of the draw to jog her memory.
“I saw how emotional I was and I think it made a big difference in how I came out to that fight because I remembered that grief – I was devastated,” Scharper said. “I think it really pushed me, reminded me.” Last December, Scharper beat Thailand’s Rungnapha Kaewkrachang to become WIBA’s super-flyweight world champion. “I bawled like a baby when I won because it was the culmination of 10 years of work,”
Scharper said. “I’m only competing against myself so it’s mental warfare over myself. “I always feel like my dad’s with me. I think if he saw the determination with which I’ve applied myself to something that I probably wasn’t that suited to, he would be really proud of me … I think of him every fight.” Relentless: The Sylvia Scharper Story will premier on Wednesday, November 28, at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre.

MY BRIMBANK Jordyn Charge is moving full speed ahead to a career in racing. The 19-year-old sprint car driver talks to Esther Lauaki about the road ahead.
title a couple of years ago. I was also named Sprintcar Racing Association of Victoria rookie of the year in 2015-16. Tell us about your latest achievement in sprint car. Earlier this month I placed third at the 360 Sprintcar Allstars Series at Moama [Heartland Raceway]. It was a special moment for me to get a podium placing next to my mentor Matthew Reed. Matthew’s been such an influence on me throughout my career, so to finish on the podium with him was one of my new career highlights, and I can’t thank him, along with all of my family and sponsors, enough for all of their ongoing support.
(Pictures: Supplied)
What do you love most about the sport? Going fast and learning from my mentors.
What’s your connection to the west? I live in Melton, went to school in Caroline Springs. How long have you lived in the area? All my life.
What are you passionate about? Sprint car racing. How long have you been sprint car racing and how did you start? I started racing junior quarter midgets (cars)
when I was five then I started sprint car racing when I was 16. My dad used to race so that’s how I got into it. I’m in my fourth season [in sprint car] now. I’ve been nicknamed the “leadfoot kid”. My first big win was the Victorian 360 Sprintcar
How far do you want to go with your racing? All the way. I want to do it full-time and race in America. But I know there’s a lot of work to do to get there. It’s going to be important for us to improve our consistency … to qualify better in order to regularly crack the top-10 finishes in feature races. Our team endured an up-and-down run last season despite showing good speed at various race meetings, but we’re confident in our ability to enjoy a strong 2018-19 season, continuing to learn more as we attempt to move further up the field on a regular basis.

Western suburbs tax evaders owe the taxation department massive sums of money, according to figures released in Canberra last week. Of the five million dollars understated in Victoria, Western Suburbs, individuals and companies owe the tax man in increased tax assessed plus additional tax charged, approximately a quarter of a million dollars.

A row over property development in Brimbank could force a split in the community, councillors warned. The caution was issued at a Brimbank council meeting last week during debate on a proposal to build 14 double-storey townhouses at 100 Taylors Road, Keilor Downs.

New high-tech hospital
Imagine a hospital where real-time video of premature babies is available to family members around the clock. Or where children can interact with images on a digital picture wall, and women can personalise their birthing experience through customisable sound and lighting. These are among the high-tech hopes for the west’s newest facility, the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital (JKWCH), when it opens next year. But to ensure families have the best experience possible, Western Health now needs community help. The Western Health Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to raise $1.5 million towards additional point-of-care ultrasounds, special care nursery and maternal-foetal medicine technology, artworks and furnishings for play spaces to inject a sense of fun. Adele Mollo, Western Health’s divisional director Women’s and Children’s Services, is calling on the community to donate and help deliver the hospital families in the west deserve. “We want to be able to provide the best healthcare experience we can for babies, children and pregnant women,” Ms Mollo says. “Healthcare shouldn’t be a postcode lottery. “People in the west deserve excellent care that is

view the new baby from any location,” she says.
She says a NICVIEW system – a secure, interactive camera system in the nursery – would be of comfort to families, particularly with the west’s diverse cultural mix.
The new nine-level JKWCH is scheduled to open mid next year, with 20 labour delivery rooms, 39 nursery cots, 64 women’s inpatient beds, 32 children’s inpatient beds, four operating theatres and additional outpatient clinics.
“Many of our families have relatives not living in Melbourne and this system would allow them to

A nicely balanced mix of old and new, this renovated property has got plenty of character and will appeal to many. The charming cream and burgundy facade combined with a neat front garden creates a lovely street presence. Inside, three bedrooms (all with built-in robes) are at the front of the house. A clever change in ceiling level and flooring from ash-toned boards to tiles, marks the change of moving through the comfortable living area to a dining zone while keeping the hub nice and open. From here, sliding doors open to a north-facing courtyard. The modern kitchen has glossy white cupboards, stainless-steel appliances and patterned grey and white splash back. Stylish bathrooms add a touch of glam. Split-systems in the kitchen and a bedroom control climates from each end of the house. There is a single carport.
This renovated house is just a short walk from Sunshine station and schools, with the shopping of Hampshire Road and surrounds just a little further. On entry are two bedrooms, both with built-in robes. The kitchen has a functional design and looks smart with dark benchtops set against white cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. A neat dining space leads into a large lounge. A separate study could be utilised as a third bedroom. The bright bathroom has been renovated. Yards front and back are blank canvasses, awaiting a creative gardener’s touch. The backyard has a shed for storage and a single carport takes care of parking.

Price: $670,000 – $720,000
This modern and marvellous abode offers stylish low-maintenance living in a great location. The grey, white and charcoal colour scheme introduced by the street frontage seamlessly continues once inside. The house has three bedrooms with built-in robes, the main with an en suite. The kitchen is sleek with white stone benchtops against a combination of white and charcoal styling. It has plenty of cupboards, stainless-steel appliances and a breakfast bench. The adjoining dining space is flooded with sunlight thanks to big windows on both sides and has a split-system. A large lounge completes the hub. Close to shops, transport, schools and parks, the property also has a double garage and a water tank.
This solid three-bedroom brick veneer is ideal for family living. With warm tones and tiled flooring running throughout, internal spaces are welcoming and low-maintenance. The lounge gets lots of natural light thanks to a large window and has a gas heater with mantel. The kitchen has timber cupboards that provide loads of storage and a brekkie bench. The kitchen overlooks a bright dining space featuring a large curved window. The property has established front and back gardens, both of which are well designed and cared for. Located close to Sunshine station, shops, schools and parks, this property offers the lifestyle convenience of a central location. Inclusions are gas heating, a split-system, alarm and single garage with a kitchenette.

Property of the week
KEILOR 23 Riverside Avenue, 3036 Stockdale & Leggo St Albans: 9366 2154 At the end of a leafy cul-de-sac, this distinctive house has four levels, each taking in spectacular vistas of Brimbank Park below. The neighbourhood is surrounded by Keilor’s undulating green wedge, adding considerably to the cachet of the property. It’s the kind of place that, from the street, appears small and modest but that all changes once inside. Beyond densely planted gardens that cascade down to the front door, entry is to a floorboarded hallway, to the left of which is access to an extra-big remote-controlled double garage.

Completing the entry level are a study (or fourth bedroom), a powder room and the first of three fitted bedrooms which, like all the others, has a balcony for those views. Tassie oak stairs ascend from entry to the top floor where two spacious bedrooms each have fitted walk-in robe, en suite and split-system. En suites are identically decked out in green marble but just one has a spa tub. And balcony views apply. Down another flight of stairs from ground level is the living hub laid with polished floorboards. The views, from inside and a balcony, are at their best on this level,
where the third marble bathroom is found. The kitchen in here, with white 2pac cabinetry and charcoal granite benches, sits under a decorative bulkhead. It has a walk-in pantry and stainless-steel mod-cons. Heading down another staircase, there’s a huge storage room and cellar half way down, while at the bottom another tiled living room, with neighbouring laundry, emerges. This has a slider to a long verandah where the outlook is all leafy gardens. Steep steps, going under a wisteria

arbour, descend to the bottom of a garden where kids will happily believe fairies live among fruit and olive trees. Flights of stone steps along each side of the house head up and past pretty gardens to arrive at ground level once again. With a strong claim to uniqueness, the property also has ducted heating, ducted vacuum, alarm, a satellite dish, intercom and vertical blinds all through. Keilor Village’s shops and primary school are four minutes away by car. Carole Levy 25 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 27, 2018

HARVEY NORMAN BEDDING WATERGARDENS SPECIAL LIFTOUT
ZARA BUNK
Three stars of Christmas …..from Harvey Norman Bedding Watergardens
Avelyn Miranda’s bedding store is chock full of wonderful items, big and bold to small and perfect, to make any bedroom a retreat. And getting your home ready for Christmas is the best excuse to buy a new bedroom item to bring pleasure, impress visitors or freshen up a look, writes Carole Levy.
36 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 27, 2018
Meet your bedroom stylist Avelyn Miranda A Owner of Harvey Norman Bedding Watergardens What’s on your bedside table? A lamp, photo of my daughter, Ava, phone charger and reading glasses. What time is your alarm set for?
GATSBY CHANDELIER
At 5.45am – when I get up to feed Ava and then leave for work at 7.30am for a 9am start. What’s your favourite bedroom furnishing colour? I like blues. My bedroom has white wall paint, with blue and silver accents. It’s in the Scandi style. If money was no object, what dream item would you have in your fantasy bedroom? A huge round bed, preferably with beach views, and a chandelier – the more bling the better. How important is the thread count for bed linen? Hotel-quality 1000-thread sheets feel wonderful, but that’s really the only advantage. Lower thread counts are often preferred because the fabric is cooler and allows more air to flow through. Is there a particular colour palette emerging in the bedroom scene? Yes, we’re seeing lots of blush, an old-world pink. Rose gold is also popular for bedside tables and lamps. It’s a very romantic look.
MOTHER NATURE
ZARA BUNK
Of course, beyond these three stars, the store has numerous support acts.
For kids, bedrooms are more about play and create between sleep times. That’s why the Zara bunk bed earns a Christmas star. It may be a bit big to wrap up under the tree, but imagine your child’s face waking up in this on Christmas morning.
Beds come in all different styles, shapes and colours and to suit all budgets. There’s a large range of beds, pillows and bed linen. Modules set up as rooms give customers a chance to visualise items in their own homes and see how the experts put things together.
Your child will love playing in their pine “house”, enjoying role-play games with siblings and friends – and stairs are built in to add to the fun.
The Gatsby chandelier is one of the more blingy lightfittings on offer, but there are plenty more to suit all home decors – from mid-century retro to streamlined and contemporary.
GATSBY CHANDELIER
Wall art ranges through romantic and traditional to bold and contemporary, while different sizes and framing options refine the choice. A piece of art is such a personal statement, but Avelyn stocks something for all tastes.
The second Christmas star goes to the Gatsby chandelier. Dripping with Swarovski spectra and Egyptian asfour sparkling on a bouquet of chrome, the Gatsby will obviously fit an opulent bedroom. But it can be a star in other bedroom styles, as well. The French provincial style can accept this level of glam, but the Gatsby chandelier can also be a knockout statement in a pared-back bedroom with old wooden floors, a banged-up chest and heritage bed linens MOTHER NATURE CANVAS And the third star? Wall art, in this case the Mother Nature canvas. This will bring a soothing vibe to a bedroom – and a reminder of nature’s beauty never goes astray. Mother Nature will be a statement piece, not least because of its size (160 x 120 centimetres). It also picks up the blush shades that Avelyn says are an emerging colour trend in bedrooms.

Draftee continues Keilor tradition By Tara Murray There were more than a few nervous moments for Calder Cannons’ Curtis Taylor during last week’s AFL draft. Taylor was a late invite to attend the draft’s first round on Thursday, but his name wasn’t called out. After a sleepless night, Taylor went back to Marvel Stadium [formerly Etihad Stadium] on Friday to listen to the rest of the draft. Taylor was expected to be taken by pick 30, but had to wait a bit longer to hear his name. North Melbourne traded Western Bulldogs for pick 46, to pounce on Taylor. Taylor said he wouldn’t change the draft wait for anything. “It’s amazing and I’m just stoked and over the moon,” he said hours after being selected. “I can’t describe the feeling. “I had my head in my hands just waiting for my name to be read out and when it was, I was rapt. “It was stressful, but that’s all part of being drafted.” Kangaroos coach Brad Scott quickly introduced himself, telling Taylor the club was shocked he was still available at that pick. “They didn’t think I would get that far and when I was, they jumped at the opportunity to pick me up. They were really rapt and keen for me to get into it, as I am.” Going to North Melbourne means that Taylor can continue to live at home, just two suburbs away from Arden Street. Taylor, whose relatives include Shane Warne, is the latest in a long line of players to get drafted out of Keilor Football Club. He is the sixth player since 2014 who has come through the club’s junior ranks and gone on to be drafted.
“Paul Ahern is down there at North and he’s a Cannons boy,” Taylor said. “A few other guys like Jayden Laverde, Nick O’Kearney and Damo [Damien Cavka] have also come through and they’ve all experienced it. “I do speak to them, especially Nick O’Kearney, who has been a massive influence for me, giving me advice leading up to the draft.” Another big influence for Taylor has been Keilor senior coach and Collingwood premiership player Mick McGuane. McGuane thrust Taylor into Keilor’s side as a 16-year-old in 2016, where in just his fourth senior game he played in an Essendon District Football League premier division premiership. “Mick has been amazing,” Taylor said. “What he has been able to give me and the opportunity to play senior footy at a young age, really helped. “It’s been that good to experience, that I’ll always cherish, but it’s a new chapter in my football life and I can’t wait to get started.” Taylor didn’t have long to let the news settle in, as he joined the Kangaroos at training on Monday. Taylor was one of four Cannons players picked up in the draft. Rhylee West, was taken by the Western Bulldogs as a father-son pick at pick 26, with co-captain Jack Bytel taken by St Kilda at pick 41. Lachlan Sholl made it a fourth Cannons player selected, taken by Adelaide at pick 64.

SPORT Cougars cruise to a comfortable win wicketkeeper Dave Rogowski who led the way with 56. Long remained alive on 39 when he declared, while Jarrod Catania produced 48 from the lower order. The lead of 135 proved to be more than enough. The Cougars skittled the Lions for just 115 in their second dig. Moore was once again a menace to the Lions batsmen, taking 4-31. He finished the match with a bag of 10 wickets. Catania and Nadzielski took two wickets apiece for the Cougars. Kealba-Green Gully is entrenched in the top two following the victory.

List joy for new Bulldog By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets defender Buku Khamis endured a lengthy draft period, but he finally got his wish of landing on an AFL list. The 18-year-old was hoping to be selected in the main AFL draft and was tipped to do so by the experts, but was overlooked there before eventually being listed by the Western Bulldogs as a pre-selected rookie. Khamis, who was born in South Sudan and arrived in Australia in 2006, was glad to land at the Bulldogs, a club that had worked with him as part of its Next Generation Academy. “I was hoping to get picked up in the actual draft, but at the end of the day I’m just happy because I’m on an AFL list at the Western Bulldogs,” Khamis said. “I’m stoked to be officially a part of the Western Bulldogs. I’m just so grateful to be at a great club.” Khamis was expected to attract a bid by another AFL club in the draft, but surprisingly one never came. That allowed the Bulldogs to pre-select him ahead of the rookie draft – something of a steal for a player who excelled for Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships. He earned All Australian honours at the championships, displaying incredible athleticism, tremendous reading of the play, strong intercept marking and clean use of the ball by foot. Khamis will relish the chance to grow with the young Bulldogs’ list under coach Luke Beveridge. Having already been involved at the kennel as part of the Next Generation Academy, he expects the transition to the big league to be a smooth one. “I think it will help make the transition easier because I already know what it’s like and what to expect and how the people are there,” he said. “It is very exciting to go to a club where they have very young players. “I think we can relate to each other. “We had a function with the new draftees and a few staff members … the message was to just come in and enjoy it, work hard and have fun, as well.” Khamis is grateful to all the people who offered guidance throughout his junior career, particularly former Jets coach Torin Baker. Baker was not only his coach at the Jets, but worked closely with him at Maribyrnong College. “Having him work at my school helped shape the player I developed into,” Khamis said. “He’s helped me out with my craft and the Jets
IN THE DOGHOUSE seven years out of the hot seat, Chris Murphy has jumped back into the role as president of the Spotswood Football Club. The Murphy name is synonymous with the Woodsmen, with his parents Len and Joan long, long time servants of the club. Chris is as passionate about local footy and his club as anyone I have met and he will continue on the good work done by Alan Given over the past seven years. Annette McLaren continues in her role as administrator (now in her 16th year) and Michelle Langlands continues as treasurer for her fourth year. Spotswood is a powerhouse club in the WRFL with a very healthy junior and senior history, and is a trailblazer in the development of female footy in the west. More importantly is the roll Joan makes rather than plays, as her sausage rolls are the best I have tasted.

Crossing Sports Club held its annual awards night last Saturday with three new inductees into the club’s Hall of Fame. Recently retired footballer Matt Ryan joined cricketers Greg Kennedy and Mark Craig to receive the highest accolade from the club. With nearly 1000 games between them, each was well deserving of the honour. Chris Guy was named the Rising Star after a breakout year with the Warriors and Jason Dowie deservedly received the Committee Person of the Year award for his untiring work for the football club. Big news at the football club is the move by Shane Buckingham to step down as president.
■ In
the early days of the WRFL radio coverage moving to WYN FM there were a few people who were less than helpful. One of the people who gave great moral support from within the radio station was David Kennedy. Sadly David passed away earlier this month. David was a life member of the North Melbourne Football Club, after 30 plus years service, and his passion for the Kangaroos was shared with his love of broadcasting and presenting his jazz and music shows on WYN FM. A gentleman through and through, a loyal and decent man, he will be sadly missed.

coaches at training have been really good in helping me become a better player.” After starting his life overseas, Khamis found out about Australian rules football when he arrived as a six year old. He ambition when he first played, at St Albans Football Club, was to simply have fun. “They had a huge impact,” Khamis said. “It’s where the journey began, I started my junior

footy there and they’ve been really good to me. It was all about having fun and enjoying my footy at that stage.” Khamis’s family has also developed a love for Australian rules. “Over the years they’ve embraced it,” Khamis said. “They were stoked for me that I was finally on an AFL list and that I’m staying in Melbourne.”

Kealba-Green Gully took full advantage of its clash against winless Northern Lions in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association Luscombe Shield with a points-boosting outright victory at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. The Cougars had already sealed first innings points on day one, so their order of business into the second day was to extract maximum points. The Evan Long-captained side achieved its goal without needing to bat for a second time. The victory was set up for Kealba-Green Gully on the first day when they rolled the Lions for just 80 after a six-wicket haul from Jaydan Moore and four wickets from Matthew Nadzielski. The Cougars easily chased down the runs for first innings points before powering past the target to finish on 8-215 declared. Giant night for Jets captain By Lance Jenkinson Knowing it would be his last chance for some time, Western Jets captain Xavier O’Halloran savoured every moment that he got to spend with his family on Saturday before his impending flight to Sydney on Sunday. The reality was setting in that he would be leaving his family home of 18 years and moving interstate after being drafted into the AFL by the Greater Western Sydney Giants with pick 22. O’Halloran had been working diligently towards his dream of becoming a professional footballer throughout his time with the Jets and knew there was a strong possibility he would be forced to leave Victoria. While there will be an obvious transition period that comes with such a major life change, O’Halloran could not be more excited. “I knew a couple of months ago that there was a possibility that I’d have to move interstate,” he said. “I’m accepting of that. Once I’m on the plane, it will all be real … I’ll definitely be super excited then.” O’Halloran’s selection was outstanding value for the Giants – getting the Vic Metro captain with pick 22 could be viewed as a steal. O’Halloran was exemplary on and off the field for the Jets in the TAC Cup, which translated into selection for Vic Metro. He shone in the Big V at the under-18 national championships. Be it as a midfielder or across half-forward, O’Halloran showed plenty of poise. The 18-year-old is at ease in heavy traffic as a
midfielder, while he can create separation from an opponent as a forward. Expect the St Bernard’s product to thrive in the elite environment of an AFL club. It is not only his on-field play that would have made O’Halloran an attractive proposition to the Giants. He is a noted leader at every level he has played. “I’m hoping to be able to provide the club some good footy and continue to do that as long as I can,” he said. “Also, hopefully show the leadership skills that I’ve shown through the Jets and school footy, as well as Vic Metro.” O’Halloran’s draft night was a bit different to the norm. The youngster from Altona did not get an invite to night one, so he thought he might not be taken as one of the first 22 players. But that all changed when the Giants called out his name. “You could say I got the best of both worlds,” he said. “I got to spend my time with my close family [watching the draft on TV] and then being able to go in [to Marvel Stadium] later, about 15 minutes after hearing my name called out and meet all of the GWS team. It was a pretty surreal night.” O’Halloran joins former Western Jets alumni Callan Ward and Adam Kennedy at the Giants. Zak Butters was the first Western Jets player taken in the draft. The speedy midfielder from Darley was selected by Port Adelaide with pick 12. Butters missed the second half of his top-age year with the Jets after undergoing shoulder surgery, but not before he had impressed for Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships.
