Poppy passion Caroline Springs RSL volunteers will be out in force for their annual poppy drive. RSL membership officer Peter Burquest said the drive enabled the sub-branch to remember those who served, as well as connect with the community. “Remembrance Day is a time to reflect on those who have served and those who gave their life for the country to prosper,” he said. “It’s also time to thank those who are still serving and pray for their safety during their deployments.” Volunteers will be at the Caroline Springs, Taylors Hill and Watervale shopping centres and Bunnings Warehouse Caroline Springs in the lead-up to Remembrance Day, November 11. Watergardens parking fix By Tate Papworth Years of parking pain at Watergardens station could soon be over. The state government has pledged to build more than 500 additional parking spaces at the station. The commitment is part of a plan to build 600 new and upgraded carparks across the west, including sites in Wyndham Vale, Werribee and Tarneit. The upgrades will include new lighting and CCTV for increased safety. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins welcomed the announcement.

“We know how frustrating it is to find a carpark at the station – that’s why we will build over 500 carparks at Watergardens to help get locals where they need to go faster,” she said. Parking woes at Watergardens station have been the source of community frustration and political discussion for a number of years. The problem was compounded in 2016 when Watergardens Shopping Centre imposed four-hour parking limits to eliminate all-day parking.

A community petition calling for a long-term solution to the parking problem was circulated soon after and received almost 650 signatures. In 2016, Star Weekly revealed that the state government was investigating ways to increase carparking around the station. An investigative group was chaired by Ms Hutchins and included representatives from Public Transport Victoria, VicTrack, Brimbank council and the owners of Watergardens Town Centre.

The group was to report its findings by the end of 2016, but by mid-2017 no progress had been made. The government said the additional carparks were part of its plan to deliver two new electrified metro rail lines – to Melton and Wyndham Vale. Earlier this month, Premier Daniel Andrews pledged $150 million toward a business case for the Western Rail Plan that would include fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat and the full separation of regional and metro train services. If Labor is elected, work on the business case will start next year and be finished by 2022, with the full project delivered by 2032.

Retailers at home in Braybrook By Joanna Catalano More than 750 jobs have been created with the opening of a new home living centre in Braybrook. The former Masters Centre has been redeveloped into Home Co, featuring brands such as Coles, Liquorland and Chemist Warehouse. In addition, 10 specialty retailers from across food and beverage, health and beauty and collectables sectors have joined. Leading international retailer TK Maxx is set to open at the centre early next year.

Coles says it is offering “market style” shopping in a store that features a bakery, continental delicatessen and butcher. Coles Braybrook store manager James Rotaru said he was looking forward to sharing the new store with the community. “Braybrook is a fast-growing community and we know there is demand for a new and convenient shopping destination,” he said. “We’re excited to deliver our customers great quality products and an exceptional customer service. We’re also delighted to create so many jobs for the booming area.”

Coles has created 194 new jobs through its new Braybrook store, with 44 recruits entering the workforce for the first time. The new Coles has 14 manned and 10 self-service checkouts. The Home Consortium is converting 40 former Masters Centres around Australia.

Spooks are sure to hit a sweet spot The spooky season is here. Watergardens Town Centre is inviting families to take part in ghoulish fun with the return of its Halloween Spooktacular. Tricks and treats will flow in all their ghostly glory on Wednesday, October 31. Watergardens centre manager Joe Galea said the occasion was growing in popularity. “We are extremely proud to see the event grow year after year … it offers such a unique and fun experience for the whole family,” he said.

Creepy and kooky one-day-only Halloween specials will be available, but two “zombies” could cross customers’ paths throughout the day. The town square will be transformed into a haunted cemetery covered in eerie skeletons, scary spiders and giant pumpkins. Families are being encouraged to dust off their broomsticks and wands, with the Spooktacular calling for families to don their creepiest costumes, with prizes for the best. There will be heaps of candy, with centre-wide

trick or treating running from noon. Another event highlight will be an interactive space, with scary performers entertaining visitors before they enter Halloween Town for a spooky surprise. “We have thoroughly enjoyed our preparations to bring Halloween to the centre and we hope that all visitors will enjoy the safe environment we have created for kids to trick or treat,” Mr Galea said. The fight to return driving tests and vehicle checks to Sunshine will continue today. Peter Thomson has led a series of rallies calling for the services to be brought back and said he hopes the latest rally is well supported. “This is our first rally for a little while. My health wasn’t up to organising one up until now, but we can only do what we can do,” he said. “This is the last chance we’ll get before the [state] election to send a message, so we’re hoping for a big turnout.” The rally will be held outside the VicRoads Sunshine Hub on Clarke Street from noon. The hub was officially opened this year and the lack of driving tests and vehicle checks, public toilets, and the ability to make cash transactions has been widely criticised by members of the community. When directly asked if it planned to return driving tests and vehicle checks, VicRoads director of customer services Paul Santamaria highlighted other services. “The hub at Sunshine offers a more contemporary and efficient experience for customers providing a range of registration and licensing services via self-serve and fast-lane areas, digital kiosks and traditional counter based services “ he said. “Local customers can continue to pay their registration or driver’s licence renewals in cash at the local Australia Post outlet at Sunshine Marketplace.” Tate Papworth

Daughter’s aid saves dad By Tate Papworth When 12-year-old Annalise Vella found her father collapsed and covered in blood she remained calm and let her first-aid training come to the fore. It saved her father’s life. Rodney Vella was working on a car in the shed at the family home in September when he was injured. “I was using a five-inch grinder, which was in my right hand,” he said. “It slipped across the left and cut my wrist through the tendons and the main artery. “I passed out for about 90 minutes, bleeding to death on the shed floor. “I woke up cold and shivering, saw the cut and immediately put a rag over it. I lost about two and a half litres of blood.” Mr Vella said he managed to stagger out of the shed and towards the house. He reached the pergola and collapsed again. It was then Annalise sprang into action. “Annalise was on the phone to her mum at the time and saw me. So she immediately hung up and called an ambulance,” Mr Vella said. “She was so calm throughout the entire thing. She put me into the recovery position and spoke incredibly clearly to the operator. “She saved my life.” As if fate had played a hand, Annalise had undertaken a first-aid course at Mackellar Primary School in Delahey two

weeks before the accident. Mr Vella said his story proved the worth of such courses. “Annalise put all her training into play,” he said. “If she wasn’t home, I wouldn’t be here to tell the story.

“Her knowledge saved my life and I think stories like mine are a good case to make first-aid courses compulsory in schools.” Four weeks after the accident, Mr Vella is on his way to recovery, but he says there are a few hurdles ahead. “My progress is on schedule at the moment, which is great,” he said. “I’ll probably only get 70 per cent movement back in my hand, but 70 per cent is better than not being here at all.”

Moving right along Keilor Rotary Club and Sunshine Hospital are teaming up to get patients moving. The Rotary club’s Donations in Kind program puts secondhand mobility and lifestyle aids into the hands of those who need them most. Allied health education lead Angela Mucic said the program allowed patients experiencing financial hardship to access equipment for free. “Previously, the hospital provided equipment for 30 days for free,” she said. “But after that patients had to pay a hire fee or purchase it, so there’s often this limbo where people have had to give up equipment because they can’t afford it. “We think that could potentially contribute to people readmitting to hospital if they’re not

safe enough or having falls, so this program allows patients in hardship to have that equipment from the very beginning and as long as they need it.” Ms Mucic said a wide variety of equipment had already been donated. “We’ve only been going three months and we’re already seeing equipment returned from patients who’ve had it for a month of two and no longer need it,” she said. “That’s the aim, so it’s great to see. “It’s mainly four-wheel frames and bathroom equipment, like shower seats and over toilet seats. Remove our crossings: council By Tate Papworth Despite a community petition signed by 3000 locals and a lengthy campaign, three “dangerous” level crossings in Brimbank have so far failed to make the government’s level crossing removal list. The community has for years called for the removal of level crossings along the Ballarat rail line at Station Road, Deer Park; Robinsons Road, Deer Park; and Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West.

Last week the Labor government pledged to remove another 25 of Melbourne’s most dangerous and congested level crossings by 2025 if it is re-elected. Eleven of those 25 have not been named. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the council was hoping the three crossings on the Ballarat line would be on the list. Cr Giudice said the crossings are creating chaos on the roads. “Boom gates are down for 30-40 minutes per hour during morning peak times creating a

traffic choke point. “This includes periods of up to nine minutes where multiple trains are going through, including trains stopping at Deer Park, which means barrier gates are down for longer than necessary. “The roads are so heavily congested in peak periods that drivers are becoming frustrated and can display erratic driving behavior. This increases the risks for all road users. “Buses also face substantial delays at the Station Road and Fitzgerald Road crossings,”

Cr Giudice said. “Council has received numerous complaints from community members expressing their concern with the current situation,” Cr Giudice said. The government recently committed to electrifying the Ballarat rail line from Southern Cross to Melton as part of its Western Rail Plan. While the council welcomed the news, it says the electrification plans made the removal of the three Brimbank level crossings even more vital.

Letting the love shine Love letters with Sunshine at their heart will soon be penned and showcased. Visual artist Ana Rita Pires is calling for community participation in her upcoming exhibition, From Sunshine With Love. “We cover a wall in open envelopes and people from the public put stories inside them,” Pires said. “The project is actually called From X with Love and the name changes with each varying place it’s presented. “This is actually the second time I’ve done this – the first was held in Footscray back in 2015. “I live in Sunshine, so I wanted to come back and do this project in my own neighborhood, to connect with neighbours and the people I bump into on a daily basis.” Pires will run workshops throughout November and December to help inspire participation. “I’ll be running six workshops at the

Sunshine Art Space, with the first to be held on Thursday, November 15 from 11am-1.30pm,” she said. “They’re designed to promote creative development for the project and will include little prompts, like asking to describe Sunshine to someone who’s never been here before. “But most of all it’s an open space where I can engage with community members – it’s talking to people who are willing to participate. “It’s also just a lovely place where people can come and have a chat with each other and focus on handwriting in this text-driven world, a place to slow down a bit.” Tate Papworth

Walking stalls in Brimbank By Tate Papworth Four Brimbank suburbs have been named as being among Melbourne’s least walkable. The Domain Healthy Melbourne study by Deloitte Access Economics and Tract Consultants examined the health opportunities of Melbourne’s suburbs based on factors including open space, tree cover, access to fresh food and health facilities and the density of fast-food and liquor stores. The study also looked at the walkability of suburbs – how

planning, facilities and infrastructure promote walking. Suburbs were given a score out of 10 for how walkable they were, based on the distance to public transport and shops, the number of shops in an area and census data on methods used for travel to work. Burnside Heights, Keilor Park, Delahey and Hillside were named in the top 20 least walkable suburbs in the city. The 16 suburbs with best walkability scores were all within eight kilometres of the city.

Suburbs that scored the lowest were between 15 and 45 kilometres from the city Report co-author Daniel Terrill said health and activity needed to be integrated into the planning for residential areas of which growing populations will reside. Though the study showed much of inner Melbourne was very walkable, most suburbs were not. More than half of all suburbs included scored five or less out of 10. “The ability to integrate being active into everyday travel that residents are doing anyway

Love match for Keilor The Keilor Tennis Club has a new coach and he’s promising fun times ahead. Stefan Visser, who took over the reins at the club last month, says his tennis philosophy is simple. “The biggest thing for me when it comes to coaching is promoting fun and engagement,” he said. “I want to promote tennis as a life sport … in my experience, if kids are having fun and learning, you get them for life.” Visser, a teacher by trade, has had a long love affair with tennis. “The first sport I ever played was tennis,” he said. “My grandmother got me into it and I’ve loved it ever since. She’s actually in her 80s now and still plays.” Visser comes highly credentialled, having been part of the Melbourne International Tennis School since 2016, working as the head coach of Williamstown Tennis Club and Riddells Creek Tennis Club.

Visser said he is itching to become a member of the Keilor community. “I’m looking forward to being an adopted Keilor person. I want to get to know people first. Vision Australia has set up shop in a new home in Sunshine. Australia’s largest provider of services for people with blindness and low vision moved from Kensington to a state-of-the-art centre in Withers Street, Sunshine, this month. Vision Australia says the move will help improve services for those with blindness and low vision in the north and west of Melbourne. Regional business manager Jacinta Waters said the new space was much more accessible for clients and the general public. “We have strived to deliver the best possible environment for our clients, volunteers and staff … that we think is among the best for all of our centres in Australia,” she said. “It’s less than 200 metres from Sunshine railway station, the bus interchange and taxi ranks. “We have used high-contrast office furnishings to make it easier for our clients to navigate once inside. “And the new centre includes a retail space and technology hub featuring the latest accessible technology that’s designed to support our clients to live the lives they choose.” The new premises also includes the headquarters of Vision Australia’s Seeing Eye Dogs Australia, the Leigh Garwood Indoor Mobility Centre, a sensory room and a woodwork shop. Vision Australia, a not-for-profit organisation, has 28 centres across the country and outreach programs in the Northern Territory and Tasmania. The new Vision Australia centre is located at 20 Withers Street, Sunshine.

St Albans Secondary College dominated the runway and the scoring at the Fashion Awards Australia earlier this month. The school proudly took home the John Claringbold Memorial School Cup after hard-working St Albans students claimed top place. The cup is presented to the school that receives the most points during the competition. Fashion Awards Australia is aimed at recognising talented school and TAFE students and new and emerging fashion designers. The annual awards had 285 entries this year, with the awards night held at Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing. Among the St Albans Secondary College stars were Julie Lay and Amritjit Kaur. Julie won the year 11/12 designer of the year gong and placed third in two categories. Amritjit received the year 9/10 designer of the year award and placed second in two divisions. Cairnlea’s wheel deal Cairnlea Park Primary School pupils will soon be spending more time on two wheels. The school has been donated 30 bikes as part of the Fix the Cycle program. Under the program, offenders on community correction orders upgrade bikes donated by police and the community. The work is carried out under the supervision of corrections staff. Cairnlea Park Primary School community engagement and transition co-ordinator Natalie Roach said the new additions would significantly bolster the school’s bicycle education program. “Currently the program runs two students to one bike, but this will mean we’re able to run two classes at the one time and every

student will have their own bike. “A lot of our kids don’t have bikes or the skills to ride bikes, so this is a great way of teaching them those skills and bike and road safety.” Ms Roach said the donation would also give the school the ability to give back to the community. “We were also able to get some smaller bikes, which we might be able to give to people in the community who don’t have the funds for their own bike … whether it be the kindergarten or someone local,” she said. A charity swim has turned into an artistic dream for a Cairnlea graphic designer. Raymond Lim was taking part in a 24-hour swim at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) in May this year when his artistic streak kicked in. “It was a long swim, so we had a bit of time on our hands between laps,” Lim said. “While I was waiting for my swim, I did a water colour

Brimbank council meetings will be available to stream from the start of 2019. The council said the decision gives the opportunity for community members who cannot attend council meetings in person to watch debate and decision-making at their own convenience. Mayor Margaret Giudice said streaming meetings will boost transparency and engage the community. “All council meetings are open to everyone, but we understand that not everyone has the time to come along on the day,” said Giudice. “With streamed council meetings, we’re making it easier for everyone to keep involved and up to date on council meeting decisions. “Best of all, you’ll be able to access the council video stream from wherever you are, at any time that suits you. All that’s needed is access to an internet enabled device, to get the video.” However meetings won’t be live streamed. Cr Giudice said the decision to stream council meetings as video on demand rather than live stream was made after doing a lot of homework on the different streaming options. Meetings will be made available to the public online as video on-demand after the meeting. Chook book a real blast Pupils at Mother of God Primary School in Ardeer have become published authors. Author Emma Bowd worked with the pupils over a seven-week period to develop a story as part of a writer in residence program. The end result is Super Astro Chicken and the Giant Red Tomato. The story follows the adventure of Super Astro Chicken and her dreams of a life of adventure. When she sees a giant red tomato in the night sky, she becomes more determined than ever to head for outer space. Ardoch Youth Foundation programs team leader Bess Norton said the program inspired creativity. “This is a way to engage children in literacy,” she said. “We put a writer in the school for a

seven-week period and they hold book-writing workshops with the grade 4 and 5 students. “The writer helps the children identify story ideas, build characters, pen their stories, edit them, create illustrations and eventually put a story book together.” Bowd spent five weeks developing the story with pupils before using the final two weeks to put the project together. Ms Norton said the children were excited to see the finished product. “At the end of the program, all the students receive a copy of the book, which is always a big thrill,” she said. “We’ll also look to put a few copies of it within Brimbank libraries.” Details: ardoch.org.au Tate Papworth

MY BRIMBANK Rhonda Floate, a pillar of early childhood education in Brimbank, recently celebrated her 30th anniversary with Keilor Gatehouse Preschool. She chats with Tate Papworth about a life spent shaping future generations. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I moved to Keilor Downs in 1980 and I’ve been at the kinder since 1989. What’s kept you in Brimbank so long? I love the general feel of the community. It’s a really family oriented area. The children I’ve met through the kinder have also been absolutely wonderful. Is there anything you think could be done to improve the area? On the whole, I love the area and the community. However, transport is a bit of a problem. It’s getting bigger and bigger, and with that traffic builds, which is something we could look at. I think the public transport options out here could be improved. What’s changed over the years? The kinder has changed a bit over the years. We were once run by council and were even called Calder Rise Preschool back in the day. The early years framework is also something that’s been brought in, which changed things a bit. I’ve worked with four amazing teachers over the years, as well. They’re all very different, but amazing in their own way. What’s been the best part of your job? The families I’ve met, the children and the people I work with. We’re a family at Keilor Gatehouse. We all have the same goals for the

Vandals riding trail bikes last weekend rode into Diamond and Bon Thomas Reserves and smashed into two new pre-school and infant welfare centres under construction. They succeeded in doing damage estimated to $2,000. The centres being built are to cost a total of $300,000.

The Hunt club in Deer Park is being used illegally and patrons could be in danger of death or serious injury according to a Sunshine council report. The club, in Ballarat Rd, attracts hundreds of people to community activities and regularly holds art shows and conferences. It is currently on land zoned Dangerous Industrial, which prohibits the use of the building as a “place of public assembly.”

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds plenty to explore at Karlaylisi Don’t let the Ballarat Road address mislead – Karlaylisi is on Gordon Street. In fact, it occupies the exact same premises as the sadly short-lived Spice Klub and its Indonesian offerings. Karlaylisi delivers Uyghur cuisine – the food of the Uyghurs, who live mostly in China’s Xinjiang province. There’s oodles to like about Karlaylisi. Indeed, it could be tossed up as the perfect template for the perfect CTS eating house. The menu is long, stuffed with dumplings, hand-made noodles, soups, cold dishes and kebabs. And lots and lots of lamb dishes. Some items are certainly for larger and planned groups – the roasted whole lamb ($350, $180), for instance. Or even the lamb casserole with steamed wrap bread ($60). Yet despite the ambitious menu and that this appears to be a one-man show, we found our food to be fresh, hot and delivered to our table with admirable speed and wide smiles. An early highlight – actually, THE highlight – are the lamb skewers ($2 each, minimum of five). These feature bigger chunks of meat than we’ve had elsewhere. They’re more tender, too, and a little less seasoned with salt and cumin. There’s some fat, but it all tastes way more than good. Siyi qanalgan lagman ($14.50) is a homely

From the dumpling/pastry list come tugra ($13), lamb dumplings. Once again rather plain, they nevertheless go fine. Aqqik korulgan chop ($14.50) is a much sexier (ie. oilier and with some chilli heat) noodle dish with lamb, garlic chives and sesame oil. Kala til kormisi ($14) is stir-fried beef tongue. I expected this to have a more pronounced chargrill or wok hei aspect. Instead, the meat is quite silky and very tender. The overtly meaty vibe of our menu choices is ameliorated by the complementary salad presented to us. Laohusai ($13) is a delight, zingy and fresh with loud voices of garlic and vinegar coming through. We will return to Karlaylisi – there’s so much to explore! Industry insiders offer these tips: 1. Spruce up the garden The front yard is your first chance to make a good impression, and it’s worth investing some time to get it looking its best. 2. Freshen up the facade Stand outside the front door and look at it with fresh eyes. A neglected facade will make people feel like the home hasn’t been well maintained. • Clean front door and walls • Buy a fresh doormat • Add pot plants 3. Make an entrance Clear away all clutter that can pile up near the front door, and remove any furniture that’s too large for the space. 4. Declutter the entire home Think minimal: clear crowded shelving units, keeping only a few key pieces. Clearing all horizontal surfaces can transform a room’s look. 5. Remove personal items and family photos A primary objective should be to make interiors look beautiful, but impersonal, so people can imagine themselves living in the space.

SPORT Deer Park outplayed by Yarraville Footscray Deer Park suffered its first loss of the premier bowls season, going down to Yarraville Footscray on Saturday. Despite coming into the game on the back of three powerful wins, Deer Park could only manage to draw one rink while registering big losses in the remaining three as it went down 98 (17) - 59 (1). Deer Park president Neil Cromie said it was a disappointing day. “You’ve got to give Yarraville Footscray credit, across the board they were a lot better than us,” Cromie said. “They were more consistent, and kept the pressure on us all day. Unfortunately each time

we tried to get back into the game they kept it steady and kept going down the path of what they were doing. “There’s no excuses from our side, sometimes you just get outplayed and that’s what’s happened.” While the early stages of the match were tight, the home side had soon established a lead across all four rinks, and it was an advantage it drove home as the match progressed. Skip Chris Ball was able to stage a comeback to split his rink 24-apiece, but that was as good as it got for the Parkers as the hosts enjoyed a commanding victory. While it was a bad day for the visitors,

Cromie said his side was still well-placed a month into the season. “If you’d told us we’d be 3-1 after four games you’d take that quite happily,” he said. “Our next game is at home, which gives us another chance to establish a domination that we’re trying to achieve on our home surface … hopefully we can put this weekend down to just a blip. “It goes back to a bit of a football analogy of home ground advantage, that’s what we’re aiming for … it builds up a sense of expectation in sides coming here that we’re hard to beat here.” Ewen McRae

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Next Tuesday Matt Hill will call the race that stops the nation. He called Winx to her fourth Cox Plate last Saturday, but it wasn’t always the Group One superstar races for the Altona resident. Hill started at the bottom, or not very far from it, calling dogs in his teens. He was trying to get a foot in the door and got an opportunity through Mr Clayton to call races with literally two dogs at Werribee. Mr Clayton is Alan Clayton, a dog breeder and well-known identity around Werribee, especially the Werribee Football Club where he has been a player, committee man, fundraiser, sponsor, you name it. ■ Mark Williams is making his mark in the west, now that he knows it does not cease at Williamstown. He spoke at the Cox Plate lunch and told the story of the tie that made the 2004 AFL grand final ending so memorable. You will remember his famous choke gesture to the grandstand that day, and his post-game speech castigating the major sponsor of the Power. The tie he was wearing at the time was auctioned at a Port Adelaide function not long after the history-making win and went under the hammer for $38,000. It was bought by Tony Santic, owner of Makybe Diva, which has won three Melbourne Cups and one Werribee Cup. ■ The Western Melbourne Group is looking good in its quest for one of the two A League licenses the FFA will grant in the next expansion of the competition. The group is now in the final six contenders and is confident of success. There is no doubt it would be an enormous boost for the City of Wyndham and the west in general. Soccer definitely needs a base in the west of Melbourne to grow the sport and to service the growing participation and interest from the area. We can only hope that the shoot-yourself-in-the-foot mentality that has been the hallmark of soccer’s hierarchy does not strike here.

Lions caught in the spin By Ewen McRae Taylors Lakes spilled to its second loss of the sub-district cricket season on Saturday, after it was unable to capitalise on a strong start against Werribee. While the top order set up a good platform, the middle order crumbled as the Lions managed 9-160 from their 45 overs. In reply, the hosts had no answer for Werribee captain Tim O’Brien, who’s unbeaten 80 guided his side home with 27 balls to spare. Taylors Lakes president Rob Arnold said his side was getting closer but just fell short at times throughout the day. “We were in the ballpark but just couldn’t get over the line,” Arnold said. “Their spinners got on top of us in the middle overs, and then when we got to 10-15 overs left with wickets in the shed we tried to push it along and that’s when wickets can happen. “At the time, we thought 160 would be competitive if we bowled well, but in hindsight maybe 180 was needed. There wasn’t much bad fielding or dropped catches, they just gave us

less chances and batted really well, so credit to them.” The day started well for the Lions, with Michael Brne and Chris Marr getting off to a strong start after the home side won the toss and elected to bat. Brne was particularly aggressive on anything loose, hitting nine boundaries on his way to 50 off 45 balls, before he was the first to go to have the Lions 1-69. Marr was more watchful at the other end, but when Vishesh Bansal (6) was dismissed, and Marr (34 off 76 balls) was trapped in front, the home side’s innings started to lose momentum. Werribee’s spinners dried up the runs through the middle of the innings, with the home side unable to pierce the field and use the fast outfield to full effect. Kamal Guraya (16 off 64 balls) struggled to turn over the strike, while Nipun Sumanasinghe’s 26 was the final score in double figures as Werribee’s bowlers ran through the middle and lower order. From 4-132, the Lions slumped to 8-148 as opening bowler Bradley Apps (3-47) returned

to tidy up the tail, and O’Brien (2-27) did his bit. The chase began with Andrew Ford and Shaun Dean, who laid a solid platform with a composed 26-run partnership. When Ford fell for 18 it brought O’Brien to the crease, and he proceeded to turn the game in the visitors’ favour with some fluent strokeplay and smart running. Despite losing Dean (14) and Adam Alifraco (7) with the job only half done, the combination of the Werribee skipper and Chris Hennessy (34 not out) was too much for the Lions bowlers as the visitors grabbed their first win of the year. With games to come against southern powerhouses Caulfield and Oakleigh, Arnold said his developing side was ready for the challenges ahead. “I think those two finished one and two in their division last year, so it’s a good test for us,” he said. “Whatever eventuates this year, it’s another year of cricket under the belt for our young guys so it will hold us in good stead for the years to come.”

Sunshine pins its hopes on returning pitchers

Sunshine was left to rue two poor innings in the field as it fell to its fourth straight loss of the summer baseball season on Saturday. Coming up against perennial powerhouse Essendon, the Eagles had an early one run lead, but a number of fielding errors in the second gave the visitors the lead and they never relinquished it in a 10-7 win. Sunshine coach Stuart Clayton said his side performed well for most of the game but couldn’t bridge the gap as the match wore on. “We got that early lead, and were looking alright,” Clayton said. “But they got batters on base in the second, and a couple of fielding errors gave them the lead, and then there were a couple of walks in the third and before we knew it, we were 5-1

down. From there every time we got a couple they got a couple straight back, so those early runs killed us in the end.” Sunshine started with Griffin Weir on the mound, before youngster Lachie Ruyter took over through the middle of the game as the home side tried to get into the contest. With the start of mid-week games this week, the Eagles were wary of tiring out their pitching stocks and rotated the pitcher heavily as Essendon grabbed runs as they needed them. The Eagles hitters were impressive at the plate as they continued to score and keep the chance of a win alive. Clayton said there were plenty of positives to take out of the loss, and with the mid-week

Keilor’s tail end slips up By Ewen McRae A heartbreaking late order collapse has seen Keilor slip to its second loss of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association season on Saturday. Chasing Seddon’s 5-195 in the senior division, Keilor needed just seven runs from the final nine balls of the day, and with two wickets in hand looked like taking its first points of the year before disaster struck. Shafraz Mohamed, who had hit two beautiful boundaries to bring Keilor within sight of victory, was caught trying to find the fence in the penultimate over, before wicketkeeper Chetan Arjun was bowled by Damith Priyadarshana with three balls to spare and just five runs needed for the win. Keilor captain Daniel Stavris said he was proud of his side’s effort, but some mistakes at crucial times cost them the win. “It was a good effort, but you don’t get six points for a good effort,” Stavris said. “We were always under a run a ball, so I always thought we had it under control, but we just panicked a little bit, I thought, and lost wickets at the wrong time. “We knew if we kept wickets in hand we’d win, we got bowled out so we lost. We’ve got an inexperienced kid at 11, and two experienced blokes ahead of him, so they probably needed to get us over the line and they couldn’t quite get there.” Earlier, Keilor took control of the contest with three early wickets, as Arkii Van Wills (0), Priyadarshana (12) and Ben Speake (1) all fell cheaply to have the visitors in early trouble at 3-17. From there, Duleeka Thisakuttige and Liam Braithwaite were able to stabilise the innings, with their 129-run stand giving Seddon a defendable total. Braithwaite looked right at home when he got to the crease, with his 70 coming off just 79 balls, while Thisakuttige anchored the remainder of the innings to be unbeaten on 85. In reply, Keilor lost Luke Delbridge for a duck early when Chris Sole disturbed the timber, but it was able to settle the innings with a succession of handy partnerships. Nathan Beever (41), Stavris (14) and Upal Bandara (22) all got good starts, but it was Kaushal Lokuarachchi who looked like giving the hosts the win, with his whirlwind 59 coming off just 48 balls. Sole (2-33) got the crucial wicket of Lokuarachchi, while Hayden Dryiski (3-40) was crucial through the middle and later part of the innings before the late drama. Stavris said his side was not far off breaking through for a win this season. “It was pleasing not to lose wickets in clumps, cause that’s been a bad habit of ours in recent years,” he said. “I think if we improve our fielding, a bit of our bowling through the middle and just staying calm under pressure, we’ll go alright. “We’re looking forward to Yarraville Club this week, they’re 0-2 as well so it’s a big game for both clubs.” 64 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 30, 2018

St Albans Saints have secured former AFL player Josh Hill ahead of the 2019 season. Hill, a former Western Bulldog and West Coast Eagles player, is still playing with the Northern Blues in the VFL, but will play with the Saints whenever there is a chance. Hill worked with new St Albans coach Perry Meka at the Blues last season, and will work with the Saints multicultural and indigenous coaching/mentor programs in 2019. Hill played 173 games and kicked 226 goals in his 10 year AFL career.

A well crafted 87 from Geeth Alwis was not enough to get St Albans a win in its clash with Strathmore at the weekend, as it failed to chase down 243 in the VTCA senior division. Alwis received good support from Shanaka Silva (52) in the chase, but a flurry of late wickets cost them in the charge towards the total as they were bowled out for 197. Elsewhere, Sunshine United fell agonisingly short of a comeback win in its clash with Doutta Stars, posting 8-218 after the Stars had earlier made 3-232. Tom Duxson (44) and Adam Duxson (33) were the best for United with the bat, but it was a team effort as only two batsmen failed to reach double figures in the chase.

Reigning premiers Kealba Green Gully fell to a shock loss to competition newcomers Tarneit Central at the weekend, conceding a huge total before collapsing with the bat later in the day. The visitors took a liking to the Cougars bowling attack as they pummelled them all over the park to post 7-256 from their 40 overs. The home side had a forgettable afternoon with willow in hand. Jarrod Catania (34) fought hard, but the next three highest scorers were just 15 as they were dismissed for 119 in the 27th over.

In division two pennant bowls, Keilor scored a resounding win over Essendon on Saturday as it won all four rinks. It was a dominant display from the home club as it grabbed its second win of the season, 99 (18) to 57 (0). The win lifts Keilor to sixth on the table after a month of games. In division three, Sunshine VRI split its rinks with Altona but fell short of the overall win as it lost 83 (14) to 63 (4). It was Sunshine’s third straight loss. In an interesting move, Lexus will import only hybrid versions of its Lexus ES 300. Now in its seventh-generation, the ES is being offered in Luxury and Sports Luxury grades. Compared with the outgoing gen-six Lexus ES, power has been increased by almost six per cent to 160kW, while fuel consumption has been reduced by 16.4 per cent to 4.6 litres/100 kilometres as measured on the Australian combined cycle. A new-generation 2.5-litre petrol engine is among the most thermally efficient in a production vehicle. It is linked to an electric hybrid system with components that are smaller, lighter and more efficient than in the outgoing model. In an apparently odd move, the Japanese company that has made its name by providing near-silent running is offering drivers the chance to turn on an “active sound control”. This generates an audio feedback that gives the aural effect of up and downshifts like those experienced with a geared automatic transmission. We will comment on this when we borrow a road test car from Lexus. Alloy wheels are standard; 17-inch for the ES Luxury and 18-inch under the Sports Luxury. To counteract noise that can be generated by low-profile tyres, the 18-inch wheels have a hollow rim structure to help reduce the noise. Infotainment is controlled through a 12.3-inch multimedia screen and there’s a wireless phone charger. Satellite navigation, Lexus Enform and DAB+ digital radio are standard. ES Luxury features a 10-speaker Pioneer audio system. For Sports Luxury, the Lexus ES debuts a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface pad has
