Fight to fix traffic ‘mess’ By Tate Papworth Residents of a Sunshine aged care facility fear a failure to fund traffic lights at a dangerous intersection is putting their lives at risk. Two years ago, a resident of Federation Residential Village Sunshine was struck by a car while crossing Ballarat Road and is now confined to a wheelchair. Despite a two-year battle and support from local MPs, Victoria Police, VicRoads and Brimbank council, the state government has failed to fund traffic lights at the Hulett Street and Ballarat Road intersection.

Village chairperson David Richardson said the intersection desperately needed addressing. “We’re going to keep pressuring for as long as we need to,” he said. “This is a clear safety issue and we don’t want anyone else hurt. “Two years ago, one of the residents of the village was crossing Ballarat Road to catch a bus and was hit by a car,” he said. “When police attended, they were treating it as a fatal accident. As it turned out, the resident survived, however he’s now permanently confined to a wheelchair.” Mr Richardson said the area was a confusing mess.

“The problem is currently, to come out of Federation Village, you have to cross Ballarat Road to get to the bus stop,” he said. “However, in order to negotiate that, you’ve got 10 different directional lanes of traffic. You’ve got traffic making U-turns, the traffic either side on Ballarat Road, traffic coming out of Wasley Street, traffic coming out of Hulett Street and traffic in the service roads. There’s all sorts of confusion. “We’ve sought assistance from VicRoads and Brimbank council, who agree there is a problem in this area,” Mr Richardson said. “We even had a member of the Brimbank

Highway patrol tell us it was one of the biggest safety concerns he has in the area.” Mr Richardson said VicRoads drew up plans to fix the intersection but a state budget funding bid was unsuccessful. “The suggestion is to close off the gap where people are making U-turns out of Carrington Drive, making traffic come up to Hulett Street where traffic lights will be installed. “Costing was done and plans submitted to the state government, but unfortunately funding wasn’t provided.” Mr Richardson said the residents would not give up on the fight for traffic lights.

College funding campaign win By Tate Papworth People power has prevailed. The Labor government has committed further funding to ensure Sunshine College gets the full redevelopment it planned. As previously reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the school’s plans to consolidate its four campuses to two and build purpose-built classrooms at its Lachlan Street campus hit a hurdle after asbestos was found on site. About $5.5 million of the allocated $28 million for the project was redirected to clean-up, meaning much of the school’s plans

were put on hold. The government declined to commit further funding to the school, but months of community campaigning came to a head last week. If re-elected, the government will invest $12.75 million for the next stage of the college upgrade which includes previously deferred works. This stage will include a performing arts centre, gymnasium, year 7-8 learning building, carparks, further demolition works and other upgrades. Earlier this month, Labor candidate for

the seat of Footscray Katie Hall said she was confident the school would be delivered as promised. “This should be an exciting project for students in Sunshine and I want us to be in a position to return to that excitement and optimism,” she said. Sunshine College school council member Vin Ryan said it was a victory for the community.

“We’re absolutely stoked with the news,” he said. “This was a really big effort from everybody involved, particularly Katie Hall and [Greens MP] Huong Truong. “Community effort was such an important factor here – a lot of people worked tirelessly for this result. “At the start of year we decided to scrimp on a few things like the carpark and landscaping, but we’re not going to have to do that anymore.” It is hoped that the upgrades will be complete for the start of the 2020 school year.

Full steam ahead St Albans East Primary School is going full steam ahead into a celebration of the best work of its pupils. The STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) night will feature pupils from all year levels. School principal Paul Busuttil said it was a great way for the school’s community to engage with the curriculum. “Schools around the world are recognising STEAM as being important subjects for children to learn, as they teach valuable skills and encourage problem solving and creative thinking,” he said. “This is an opportunity to showcase and celebrate students designs and work completed throughout the year. “It will also be a great opportunity for parents and students to engage in a variety of STEAM activities.”

Mr Busuttil said the pupils’ skills should impress. “We have such a diverse, talented group of students here and the beauty of a night like this is that it gives them all an opportunity to showcase that.” The event is on Wednesday, October 24 from 5-7pm at St Albans East Primary School, 7-17 Station Avenue. Dirt bike riders rev up residents By Tate Papworth Sunshine residents say they have been forced off peaceful waterside walking paths by dirt bike riders who are tearing up the tracks. Residents say the riders are speeding around Kororoit Creek, making it unsafe for them to walk the paths. Sunshine local Greg Dixon says it’s a daily problem. “They start at about nine in the morning – you can almost set your clock to it,” he said. “There isn’t an hour that goes by where you

don’t hear them going through the paved and off-road areas of Kororoit Creek up until seven at night. “There’s potentially a lot of danger – these guys are flying through,” he said. “It’s just too dangerous to walk your dog or take your children there.” Mr Dixon said the problem had escalated since police presence decreased. “I’ve lived out here for about seven years and it’s got noticeably worse in the past few years. “There used to be a police presence in the park, but that’s since been pulled and the

problem’s got worse.” Mr Dixon said the bike noise was a constant, but he had also heard a number of altercations between riders are residents. “I’ve personally had three significant confrontations where guys [riders] have gotten too close, but I hear one every few weeks,” he said. “I’ve actually had to call the police twice due to an altercation, but nothing really gets done.” Earlier this year, Brimbank council introduced Victorian-first hoon laws which give the council the power to impound and

destroy bikes engaging in dangerous driving. However, Mr Dixon said the laws hadn’t deterred the riders. “Nobody really knows about these hoon laws,” he said. “If the council maybe put up some signage, it could act as a deterrent, but otherwise they haven’t done much.” He said a return of police presence would quell the problem. “Appropriate landscaping by the council would close off these tracks, but the No.1 thing we need is a return of patrols.”

New code word for cool Tech-minded girls are being invited to improve and hone their skills. Code Like a Girl – a Melbourne-based female tech start-up – is bringing its Roaming Classroom for Rebel Girls to Brimbank. The mobile pop-up classroom comes kitted out with colourful desks, lockers, neon lamps and motivational posters to transform local venues into inspirational spaces. Its workshops are aimed at increasing diversity in Australia’s future tech industry. The Brimbank classes will be held at the Visy Cares Auditorium, 80B Harvester Road, Sunshine on Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21. There will be three workshops each day for girls aged six to 18. Code Like a Girl co-founder Vanessa Doake said the idea was for girls to dive into coding in an inspired setting. “When girls come into tech companies in

the city there’s a real ‘wow factor’, but anytime anything happens in the outer suburbs or regional towns, they’re stuck with a community hall or library,” Ms Doake said. She said herself and fellow founder Ally Watson had worked hard to create a “cool” space they would have loved themselves as young girls. “The bright colours, the posters, the little details like programmable lamps … we hope the girls are going to be truly inspired,” she said. Sports grounds election boost By Tate Papworth Brimbank sporting grounds will share in a cash injection of more than half a million dollars from the state government. Labor has pledged $300,000 towards the Western Eagles Football Club in Albion, and $250,000 to the East Keilor football and cricket clubs if it is re-elected in November. The commitment will provide the Western Eagles with new LED lighting on the main pitch and pay for the current lighting to be moved onto the second pitch. Despite record numbers at the club, including

a growing women’s team, the Eagles cannot train or play on their grounds at night. Member for St Albans Natalie Suleyman said the upgrades would make the world of difference. “This upgrade will mean that day and night, the Western Eagles will have the facilities they deserve,” she said. Meanwhile, the East Keilor football and cricket clubs have been granted $250,000 to refurbish and extend the Overland Reserve pavilion.

The pavilion works will include female-friendly changerooms and amenities. The reserve is used year-round by the clubs, which have almost 400 players between them. But according to the state government, the existing facilities are not up to modern standards and are inappropriate for women. Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll said Overland Reserve was a much-loved space. “A female-friendly pavilion at Overland Reserve will provide more opportunities for locals to get active and play the sport they

love,” he said. “Overland Reserve is a real hub of our local community and these facilities will benefit our community for many years to come.” The addition of a first floor as part of the upgrade will provide space for the clubs and community to hold events and functions. The upgrade is part of a master plan for the reserve which includes new netball courts, ground realignment and lighting. The announcements come following commitments of $250,000 for Errington Reserve and $250,00 for new lighting at the St Albans Saints’ Churchill Reserve.

Audiences will embark on a journey to Neverland when Parkwood Green Primary School pupils tell the story of free-spirited and mischievous Peter Pan. About 500 pupils are taking part in the school’s Peter Pan musical, according to co-director Jacqui Hermina. It is the third year the school has put on the show, with Ms Hermina saying the children’s performances have improved vastly. The public is invited to the two-hour show on October 31 and November 1 from 7pm at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, 204 Churchill Avenue, Braybrook. Murray’s mission for life A Sydney man and his guitar have arrived in Brimbank as part of a three-year mission to raise funds for Lifeline. Murray Mandel left Canberra in March 2017 and is touring shopping malls around the country. So far he’s done 241 performances in 103 shopping malls and raised more than $38,000. Having finished the Tasmanian leg of his tour, Mr Mandel has made his way to Victoria. By Tate Papworth Airport West powerlifter Karl Di Falco has claimed his third Australian title and has his sights firmly set on the world championships. Di Falco defended his title at the Australian Powerlifting Championships at the Fitness Show Melbourne at the weekend, despite a drastically different preparation to previous years. Di Falco only had a six-week preparation for the event, but that didn’t seem to slow him down. “I actually went overseas for an extended period and took some time off,” Di Falco said.

“It’s the longest break I’ve ever had so it was a bit of a challenge to get back. “It was all a mental battle rather than a physical one ’cause it was such a small turnaround. “But I just focused session to session and backed off the weights when I had to.” Competing in the 69-kilogram category, Di Falco said he wanted to “terrorise things” and break his own squat record of 227.7 kilograms. He managed to break the record twice and will now focus his attention on the world title. “I really want to do the world titles in Shanghai next year,” he said. “I had already met the requirement to compete before the championships, but a lot of people encouraged me to do this, too.” Powerlifting isn’t the only thing keeping Di

Greens plan an end to pokies By Tate Papworth Western suburbs MP Huong Truong says the Greens would wipe out gaming machines statewide within 10 years. Addressing Brimbank’s pokies “scourge”, Ms Truong said the party would discard the 20-year licensing deal legislated by the state government last year. “Under our plan, we’ll phase out the licensing system and replace it with a final six-year licence,” Ms Truong said.

The council is calling for a number of reforms, including running an “ambitious, evidence-based campaign”, in partnership with the Alliance for Gambling Reform, calling for $1 maximum bets, reduced venue opening hours and fewer poker machines.

Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said a recent award presentation night was a great way to publicly recognise the exceptional contributions, hard work and determination of organisations and community groups making a difference within Brimbank. “The recipients have demonstrated an outstanding contribution in their respective categories and it’s an honour for council to pay tribute to these community-minded groups and organisations,” she said. “We are a proud and vibrant community and this year’s award winners and nominees are very much at the heart of what makes Brimbank such a wonderful place.” Awards were presented across five categories. Hospital works on jobs Brimbank jobseekers will soon have more opportunities to enter the workforce. State Industry and Employment Minister Ben Carroll last week visited Sunshine Hospital to announce $10 million funding for Jobs Victoria’s 22 partners. The funding will allow the partners, including Westgate Community Initiatives Group, to help more than a 1000 people into work. The Westgate group has worked closely with Western Health to support more than 60 jobseekers into roles at Sunshine Hospital. They include trainees helping health professionals to perform essential services

such as patient transport and movement, food service, maintaining beds, infection control and clinical cleaning. Mr Carroll commended the hospital for the part it has played in the scheme. “Sunshine Hospital isn’t just saving lives – they’re helping to change lives by giving people jobs,” he said. “Everyone deserves the chance to get a job and this new funding will help prepare, place and support over 1000 jobseekers into employment.” Tate Papworth

Sunshine council will join other metropolitan councils to pressure the Metropolitan Board of Works to establish a retail network strategy plan to restrict the number of large retail outlets in suburban areas. In the existing Sunshine shoppers catchment area there are plans for three major shopping complexes which would add another 300 shops to those already serving Sunshine and Keilor shoppers.

Ardeer High School principal Hugh Turner was among the teachers who submitted to student “revenge” under a bucketing contraption at Ardeer High Schools “Ardeerfest” at the weekend. And four-year-old Luke Maaten had fun painting his face. The “Ardeerfest” also featured Macedonian and Maltese dancing, crazy bikes, computer games, food and clothing stalls, jazz, ballet and sport.

Up to 7000 householders will not be charged an interest penalty for the late payment of their rates after confusion over the Brimbank council’s payment scheme. The council will waive the interest fee charged at 12.3 per cent a year if ratepayers pay the first installment by November 6. The payment was due before September 30.

The Socceroos could soon be recruiting stars from a sunshine soccer club, thanks to a program that has the game’s national figures training local youngsters. Sunshine George Cross has sub-contracted a company called FunFootball to bring professional coaches and player-managers to the club to work with junior boys and girls, aged 11 to 18, for the 2009 season.

MY PLACE Kleo and Nick Mitris have opened the west’s first Hunky Dory fish and chip shop. The brother-and-sister team chats with Tate Papworth about the business, Brimbank and the future. What’s your connection with Brimbank? NM: We’ve lived in the area since 1985. I came here when I was 17 and haven’t left. How has Brimbank changed over the years? KM: When we came here, none of this was here. There was no Watergardens or real urban areas – it was all farms. We’ve seen it develop and grow. It’s like a second generation has come through. So you’ve recently opened a Hunky Dory fish and chip shop at Watergardens. KM: It’s been a real baptism of fire. We expected to be busy, but nowhere near as busy as it has been. We’ve actually had people from other stores come in to lend a hand, which has been fantastic. How busy has it been? NM: This morning we had people lining up since 10.30. We’ve been open for about a month now and we haven’t had a moment where the store has been empty.

Given the success, do you reevaluate your goals? NM: We don’t change our goals, but we have to get ready for summer. We want our outdoor area to be a destination point and we’ll be open late. This is the first Hunky Dory in the west and we want to make it something the community can be proud of.

Cats chase down Lions By Ewen McRae A Cameron Nicol century delivered the win to Hoppers Crossing in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association season opener against Taylors Lakes at the weekend. After Taylors Lakes fought back from a slow start last week to set a target of 239, the Cats seemed to have all the answers on day two. The top order wiped out much of the deficit before losing a wicket and the Cats batted through the day to finish on 6-296 from their 80 overs. Taylors Lakes president Rob Arnold said the first week of the game came back to haunt them when defending their total this week. “When we look back on it we only batted 72 overs, so there’s eight overs left untouched and potentially another 30 to 40 runs,” Arnold said. “In this competition you just can’t leave overs unused. You never know how day two is going to go so if we could have had a bigger total to defend it could all have been different.” Nicol opened with gun recruit Jack Rhodes, and together the pair frustrated the Lions’ bowlers with a well constructed opening stand, taking full toll of anything loose on a lightning outfield. Rhodes was the first to go for 39 when Nipun Sumanasinghe trapped him in front, but the 99-run partnership had Hoppers Crossing in the box seat. Sumanasinghe picked up a second to breathe life into the Lions’ day, but when Trent Said joined Nicol at the crease the match began to slip away. The pair moved to 180 before Said (36) departed. Manny Singh got Nicol to his century soon afterwards as the visitors closed in on the win. Nicol was eventually bowled for 103 by debutant Dilshan Kanchana (1-69) with victory in sight. could not think of a better match than Adam Contessa and the Sunshine Kangaroos. There is a buzz around Kinder Smith Reserve and rightly so as they have landed a good one. They needed to as Barney Hallinan left big shoes to fill. Adam has great credentials as a coach but more important is what he brings to the club as a successful person. He has plenty of football and cricket flags to boast of but he won’t because that is not what he is about. Sunshine went within a kick in 2017 of the ultimate and dropped out of calculations in 2018, but I expect the Kangaroos will bounce back in a big way in 2019.

coaching ranks of the VFL in the west are certainly impressive with the announcement of Daniel Giansiracusa as the new Footscray VFL coach, joining Mark Williams (Werribee), Andy Collins (Williamstown) and Gary Ayres (Port Melbourne). That is a select club where you need a minimum of 200 AFL games to be a part of it. Add numerous premierships as both player and coach, best and fairest awards and other achievements like Norm Smith medals and you have an amazing knowledge and experience base for young players to be developed.

The chance to end the Deer Park dynasty in the Western Region Football League was one of the big attractions for new Sunshine coach Adam Contessa. The former Western Bulldog was named as coach of the Kangaroos last week, joining the club after successful coaching stints in the Essendon District Football League with Pascoe Vale and Airport West, including a premiership in 2012. After Sunshine played off with Deer Park in the 2017 WRFL decider, Contessa said the challenge of knocking off the six-time reigning champs was his greatest motivation. “A big part of me taking on this role was the challenge that Deer Park presents and the opportunity that’s there,” he said. “I know some people from Deer Park that have been there since they started on this journey they’re on, so from a coaching perspective and a club perspective, I want to be involved in the team that takes that mantle off them. “It’s an individual and a collective challenge, and would be an incredible achievement to be

Familiar face to lead Sunshine Sunshine Baseball Club may have a new man with the coaching reigns this season, but he’s far from an unfamiliar face around the club. Stuart Clayton has stepped up to take on the club coaching role this summer, some 35 years after first joining the club. He’s held numerous coaching positions down the grades, as well as many years on the committee. He said the opportunity to lead the club into an exciting new era was one he was relishing. “It’s all about having good people around you and trying to teach this young group the right way to play the game,” Clayton said. “When I put my hand up for the job I wanted to make sure the senior guys were happy for me to take on the role, and all the feedback I’ve got was very positive. “No one knows the club better than I do I suppose, so I know what we’ve got to do and where we’ve got to go. It’s been a fantastic couple of months to start with and now it’s about keeping that rolling for the rest of the season.”

While pitcher Tayler Rowe injured his knee in round one, Clayton said the return of Australian under-23 pitcher Jeremy Young in November would give his side a boost as they look to push for finals this season. “I’m pretty sure that once everything clicks we can get on a bit of a roll,” he said. “We want to be competitive in every game and to push for finals later in the year.” In Saturday’s game against Upwey Ferntree Gully, Sunshine had an early lead but struggled to contain the visitors’ hitters as the game progressed. They eventually lost 5-1. Sunshine held a one-run advantage early in the game and pitched and fielded well throughout, but three runs in the fifth innings to Upwey turned the game on its head. Altona North posted 6-173 off its 40 overs, with Shane Jones the pick of the bowlers with 2-31 off seven overs. In reply, Deer Park got good contributions at the top of the order from James Leach (32) and Shiran Rajakaruna (25), but with seven players failing to reach double figures the task proved too much. Jones added 20 runs to go with his wickets, but Deer Park was all out for 138.

Openers show the way By Ewen McRae A century opening stand has guided St Albans to a huge win in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division opener, knocking off reigning premier Yarraville Club on Saturday. Chasing down the Clubbers 7-223 from last week, St Albans could not have asked for a better start as openers Brenton Cook and Simon Lambert laid the perfect platform with a 123-run partnership, allowing the middle order the freedom to chase down the target with plenty of time to spare, though not without some nervous moments. The Saints eventually reached the target in the 72nd over, finishing on 8-223. St Albans’ coach Rob Nikolic said all credit had to go to his openers, who produced the match-winning stand. “That’s probably one of the best opening partnerships I’ve seen at the club,” he said. “To come out and do that in our first game in the top division, against probably the best team in Victoria outside of Premier Cricket, was just outstanding. “Cook played a couple of games for us last year, but that knock from him was outstanding, and it was probably a different innings from Lambert, who’s a very good player, but he just anchored the whole innings which was crucial in the end.” Cook and Lambert took up the challenge against the reigning champs with aplomb, with Cook playing the role of aggressor while Lambert was more patient but equally impressive. Will Sheridan was his usual tidy self with the new ball for the visitors, however Joseph Blake took some early punishment at the other end, with his four overs costing 26-runs and getting St Albans off to a good start. Cook hit eight boundaries and two big sixes in his knock of 71 off just 104 balls, but when he was trapped in front by Adam Contessa (1-22) the visitors started to get back into the contest. From 0-123, St Albans slipped to 5-161, with Chathura Darshana (4-85 off 26 overs) doing some damage. Lambert was the third man out for a vital 60. While the Clubbers had a sniff of a comeback win, a pair of 20s from Pawandeep Singh and captain Tom Langley-Dunn were enough to guide the Saints home. Nikolic said he hoped this was the start of a strong season at the highest level of VTCA. “The expectation from us first of all was to survive and avoid relegation, so this is a good start towards that,” he said. “Hopefully we can build on this and … establishing ourselves as a permanent fixture at this level.”

In division one north, PEGS put in a good all round performance to snare a win over St Francis De Sales. PEGS took to the field first, and some tight early spells helped keep the home side to 8-133 from 40 overs. Jake deGabrielle was the standout with 3-12, and he got good support from the rest of the attack as everyone chipped in. With the bat, a 48-run opening partnership laid the platform for the chase. Skipper Lucas Elliott top scored with 34, and with Kristian Dixon (28) and Kapila Goonewardena (20) both batting smartly they reached the target in the 38th over.

Kealba Green Gully has launched its North West Metropolitan Cricket Association season in perfect style, claiming an outright win over Burnside Springs in the George Luscombe Shield. Four wickets to Robbie Bullock (4-42) helped dismiss the visitors for 209, before a frantic chase saw the hosts get full points, finishing on 5-144. Deer Park’s strong start to the Premier Bowls season continued this week, with a hard-fought win over reigning premiers Altona. Taking on its local rivals under lights on Friday night, Deer Park took out three of the four rinks to claim a 75 (16) to 68 (2) victory. Robert Doody and Brett Mahoney both scored crucial wins in their rinks to set up the win, with Deer Park now one of just three unbeaten sides after two rounds of the season. It will host top of the table Lilydale this week with the chance to take top spot early in the year.

Melbourne Knights head coach Aljosa Asanovic and assistant Dean Racunica have departed the club to take up coaching positions in Saudi Arabia. The duo will join Al-Ittihad. Both men were a key part of the Knights’ fight to avoid relegation in 2017. The club will now begin the hunt for a new coaching team to help the club improve on its 9th place finish in 2018.

The Mini began life as a tiny no-nonsense very practical car that could carry four people with less squeezing than might have been expected and became a legend. BMW Mini was launched in 2001 after the British maker got into so much financial strife that the German company moved in to sort out the mess. Thankfully, the guys and gals at BMW understood that though Mini had remained a sensible car, it had also become the king of the customisers. Styling changes on the latest Mini are minimal. Instead of making exterior changes, technology and infotainment have received major upgrades based on those introduced in recent years on BMW’s own models. A new palette of colours and trims have been introduced.

Styling

New design LED lights are standard on the Cooper S – the model we test – and on John Cooper Works. The LEDs are integrated into the main headlight fitting and increase both low and high-beam range. An optional adaptive LED system using a matrix high-beam function that adapts to the road ahead was on our test car and certainly made night driving safer and simpler.

The Cooper S has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that produces 141 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque. always in the correct gear, though habit had us probably using the paddle shifters more than required. Having said that, there’s no way I would buy a Mini of any sort with an automatic. Ride comfort is generally good, but some hard bumps and dips did find their way into the interior. Fuel consumption isn’t something that’s generally spoken about when testing a performance car, but efficient engines are often surprisingly economical. Which was the case in the Mini Cooper S around town. When fanging in the country, it sat in the nine to twelve litres per hundred kilometres range. On motorways, that dropped to below the sevens.
