Water safety warning By Tate Papworth The EPA has issued a warning to the public to stay away from a number of Brimbank waterways. The agency recommended that people avoid swimming in the water and keep pets away from Arundel Creek, Deep Creek and Maribyrnong River. Anglers have been advised not to fish in the Maribyrnong River upstream of the Calder Freeway to Deep Creek at Bulla, and within all of Arundel Creek. The warning follows a preliminary risk

assessment of data provided by Melbourne Airport about levels of PFAS at the airport and in surrounding waterways. Jacksons Creek and Steele Creek were tested but the warning does not apply to them. Normal drinking water supplies are not affected. Per-and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of manufactured chemicals which have historically been used in firefighting foams and other industrial and consumer products. The airport’s data shows levels in some locations – primarily in Arundel Creek between the airport boundary and Maribyrnong River

– are higher than the health-based guidance values for recreational water. The EPA is now organising a multi-agency working group, including Melbourne Water, Southern Rural Water, DHHS, Agriculture Victoria, Victorian Fisheries Authority, DELWP and relevant councils to conduct further testing of water, soil, plant and aquatic life to better understand any public risks. The EPA said results from the further tests will be made available to the public as soon as possible. Signage will soon be installed at the affected waterways. While the assessment indicates the use of Maribyrnong River water for irrigation purposes is low risk, further testing will be needed to confirm. Brimbank council said it had been made aware of the “contamination issues”. Possible links between PFOS and PFOA exposure and several health effects have been reported in epidemiological studies around the world. However, many of these findings have been inconsistent.

Vandals deface new park By Tate Papworth Sunvale Community Park has been vandalised just days after it was officially opened. Between 5.30pm on Tuesday, September 18 and 8am Wednesday, September 19, one or more vandals damaged grass and garden beds by riding a motorbike through the park. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice slammed the vandals and labelled the act an “insult.” “This deliberate and aggressive act of vandalism is an affront to our community,” she said. “It is a gross insult to the many people in our community who worked tirelessly over several

years to campaign for a community space that we can share and enjoy together. “It is an insult to our local residents, including many families and children who have already come to love this wonderful park.” Cr Giudice said security around the park will be increased. “Council has contacted Victoria Police to request police investigate and increase patrols in the area,” she said. “We call on anyone in the neighbouring community to report any information you may have to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. “You may be a nearby resident who heard or saw something when the damage took place –

or you might know someone with information about this crime.” The council said it will repair the damage as soon as possible and encouraged the community to continue enjoying the space. “We worked together to create this wonderful park and I know that we can continue to work together to care for and protect it,” Cr Giudice said. “We know that our proud and resilient community will continue to enjoy this wonderful park for many, many years to come. “I look forward to our community sharing in more positive celebratory milestones at Sunvale Community Park in the future.”

Holiday fun ready to ramp and roll Some of the state’s best scooter riders are set to roll into Brimbank these school holidays and locals have the chance to join them on the ramps. Grit Scooters is kicking off its Grit Pro Team Tour around Victoria with a stop at Braybrook on Thursday, October 5. Grit Scooters’ riders Angus Varney and Charlie Stamp will be offering mentoring sessions, sharing the benefits of being part of a team of unique kids and young adults. They’ll also show off some of their wildest tricks and stunts. The event, which was organised by Australian-based sports company Active Outthere, will also feature group lessons and a best trick competition. Active Outthere chief executive Brett Varga said it was a great opportunity for some active fun these school holidays. “We know how desperate parents become during the school holidays trying to entertain the kids, and we also know scooter riding [as a sport] is gaining in popularity every year,” he said. “We wanted to bring together some of the best riders in Australia from the Grit, Crisp and District teams to meet aspiring riders, teach them a few tricks, put on a bit of a ramp show, and to promote the benefits of being part of a team.” The event will take place at Rampfest Indoor Skate Park, 47-85 Hilary Street, Braybrook from 11am to 1pm. Sex diseases on the rise A surge in sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in Brimbank is prompting calls for locals to look after their own sexual health and get tested. Department of Health and Human Services deputy chief health officer Dr Brett Sutton said there had been a spike in the number of people infected. “The last decade has seen record increases in STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis, here and across Australia,” he said. “In 2017, Victoria had the highest number of STIs reported since records began in 1991.” Between 2012 and 2017 in Brimbank, diagnosed cases of gonorrhoea have risen by 91 per cent and syphilis by 100 per cent. “While this can be associated with more testing, improved testing technology and a growing population, this rise is also linked to changing sexual behaviours,” Dr Sutton said. “In particular, social media, dating websites and apps are changing the way we meet, connect and form relationships.” He said it was vital for people to get tested. “If you’re having sex with a new partner or don’t always use a condom, it’s recommended that you get an STI test. “STIs often have no signs or symptoms, and testing will ensure you and your partner don’t have to live with potentially serious, long-term consequences from a treatable infection.” Details: www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/ STI Tate Papworth

Brimbank bucks crime trends By Ewen McRae Crime is up in Brimbank despite an overall drop across the state, according to the latest figures. Data from the Crime Statistics Agency shows overall offences in Brimbank jumped by 2.35 per cent (13,920 offences to 14,247) in the year to June 30, 2018, however it is still well behind the record high of 2016 (15,296 offences). While overall crime levels were up, there were significant decreases in key areas, such as

burglary/break and enter (down 6.9 per cent), drug dealing and trafficking (down 9.86 per cent) and disorderly conduct (down 11.2 per cent). The biggest increases came in breaches of orders (up 19.5 per cent), assault (up 7.2 per cent), sexual offences (up 28.5 per cent) and robbery (up 15.6 per cent). It is only the second time since 2013 that offence rates have increased in Brimbank. Crime across the state has fallen by 5.6 per cent overall.

Crime Statistics Agency chief statistician Fiona Dowsley said the statewide figures showed general improvements in the past 12 months. “The Victorian victimisation rate is the lowest in five years, and the alleged offender figures are the highest seen in Crime Statistics Agency data holdings, which go back to July, 2004,” Ms Dowsley said. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the fall in the number of youth offenders in the crime statistics was one of the most pleasing

aspects, as was a drop in crime generally across the region. “Over the past five years we’ve seen a reduction from 20 per cent of our offenders being young people, to now just 16 per cent,” Ms Neville said. “The ones who are offending are offending more, but in these figures we’ve seen a small reduction in the recidivism rate. “The north-west region, which is our biggest contributor to crime, has also seen a 6 per cent drop since 2011, while the western region has also fallen 10.5 per cent.”

Tied to the community Western Health staff wore bow ties last week to signify a united front. The staff at Sunshine Hospital took part in the campaign to signify how important their role is in “tying it all together” so patients receive comprehensive care both within the health service and out into the community. The initiative was part of Allied Health Week, which promotes the services – from paediatrics through to geriatrics – that Allied Health professionals deliver. At Western Health, Allied Health services are provided in the emergency department, in inpatient acute and subacute wards, and the community. Western Health senior clinician physiotherapist Clare Holdsworth said the collaborative approach has yielded great results. “We are ‘can do’ people, and pride ourselves on how we work together to provide the best possible care for our patients and their

families,” she said. “As key members of a multi-disciplinary team, we are experts at identifying risks and implementing solutions that will help patients get back to living as safe, healthy and meaningful lives as possible. “Our diverse group of skilled professionals assesses and manages the consequences of illness and disability on a daily basis.” In the past year, Allied Health professionals at Western Health have provided 210,583 occasions of service to inpatients and 44,000 to outpatients. They have provided 47,232 interpreter services and completed about 150 research publications and presentations. A Kings Park woman has been charged with 19 counts of theft following an investigation into luggage allegedly stolen from Melbourne Airport. Police charged the 51-year-old following an investigation into thefts from the domestic baggage carousel between October 6, 2017, to September 5 this year. Detectives and AFP officers executed a warrant at a Kings Park property about 9am on September 20, with seven suitcases and property seized. The woman has been bailed to appear at the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on January 8, 2019.

Police arrested a teenager last week in relation to an armed robbery in St Albans on September 12, as well as two robberies in Hoppers Crossing and another in Tarneit in August. Police were investigating the Tarneit incident in which it’s alleged four youths ransacked a Habitat Court home, producing a machete and assaulting a woman, before stealing her car on August 17. An 18-year-old arrested in Point Cook on September 20 is believed to be involved in all four incidents and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Horror crash shocks police By Tate Papworth Brimbank Highway Patrol officers have vowed to continue heavily patrolling the Western Ring Road after last week’s fatal crash left members devastated. The man who was killed was a passenger in a truck which stopped in the emergency lane on the Western Ring Road near Furlong Road, Greensborough-bound on Tuesday. The man and truck driver were adjusting the straps on their load when the 34-year-old was hit and killed by a passing crane truck.

Motorists using the emergency lane have been the subject of numerous police operations in the past and Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Andy Oakley said the accident had left officers devastated. “The car was stopped in the emergency lane for a reasonable reason and this has happened,” he said. “We regularly run operations on that exact stretch of road and it’s devastating that this has happened at a spot where we’ve handed out hundreds of tickets to people driving in the emergency lane. “It’s not that long ago that a similar incident

happened on the other side of the freeway where a physically sick man stopped in the emergency lane and was struck by a motorist.” In a recent operation, police caught 115 drivers using the Greensborough-bound emergency lane on the Western Ring Road at St Albans in a two and a half hour period. Sergeant Oakley said it was a cause of frustration that the message isn’t getting through. “Emergency lanes are there for a reason. They’re not there for people to make headway on traffic,” he said.

“Some of the risks people take, just to save 30 seconds is amazing. “A number of lives have been lost, hundreds of tickets have been issued, all for the sake of saving a miniscule amount of time, if any. “Two days ago I got a guy going 130km/h in the same stretch of road where the accident happened. People need to see how dangerous their actions can be.” Sergeant Oakley said police will continue to enforce the law. “We hand out a large amount of tickets each week and will continue to do so,” he said.

School art with heart Budding young artists at Albion Primary School had the chance to show off their masterpieces last week. The school held its first whole school art show last Wednesday and teacher aid Lorraine Furrugia said it was a night to remember. “The show was an enormous success – we had a fantastic turnout of parents, staff and children,” she said. “Every student was featured and it was so fantastic to see the look on all their faces when they showed off their work.” The school’s main building was turned into a giant art gallery for the show. “There were lots of colourful creations throughout the school,” Ms Furrugia said. “We had decorated trees, each student did a picture on a block, and we had a heap of paper mache animals too.” The school also auctioned off whole-class projects, raising a significant amount of money.

“Each class provided a canvas which we auctioned off at the end of the show,” Ms Furrugia said. “We actually managed to raise $1500 which for a small school like ours is absolutely amazing. “We’re very lucky to be part of such a generous community.” Given its success, Ms Furrugia hopes the show will be the first of many. “We’ll definitely look to do this again,” she said. “Karyn Johnstone, our art teacher, did such a fantastic job with this. “The quality of the creations – from prep right through to grade 6 – was absolutely incredible.” Tate Papworth Grade 4 pupil Megan gets in the frame with some of the school’s artwork. The controversial plan to build 72 townhouses at the former Keilor Park primary school site won’t go ahead. MY BRIMBANK DonateLife educator and Brimbank local Jessica Amsden talks to Tate Papworth about organ donation, its challenges and life in Brimbank. I moved to Brimbank two and half years ago. I didn’t know the area that well prior to moving to Cairnlea, so I have enjoyed exploring the area and what it has to offer. What’s your favourite thing about Brimbank? My favourite place is Brimbank Park. I love being able to take my dogs for a walk on the Maribyrnong River trail and feel like we are in the middle of a forest. I also love being part of the ParkRun at Brimbank Park, although the hills can certainly be a challenge! Overall, I enjoy Brimbank’s diversity – the people, businesses, cultures, and its location. What could be done to improve the area? More direct bike path connections to the city would certainly improve the area. This would provide another option to residents who do not want to undertake the commute on public transport and would help keep more cars off the road. It would also allow safe alternatives for those cyclists who do not want to ride on major city roads. Tell us about your role as a donation specialist nurse co-ordinator. I spent six years in this role, I was responsible for organising the organ donation process. This included supporting bereaved families and providing them with information they needed to make a decision about organ donation, right through to accompanying the donor in their

donation operation. I was also responsible for gathering information about the donor, identifying and assessing risks to recipients, and referring organs to transplant teams in Victoria and Australia. Addressing the needs and wishes of the donor and their family is always our first priority. What was the most challenging part of the job? Meeting families on the worst day of their lives. But I also considered it a privilege because I was able to help them honour the wishes of their loved one. Raising organ donation with families who did not know the wishes of their loved one is more difficult. When a family knows if their loved one wanted to be an organ donor, the clarity this can provide at a time of immense grief and loss is profound. For this reason, I would encourage anyone reading this to consider if you were in the rare circumstance where you could become an organ donor, what you would want? I would then ask that you register this decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register at www.donatelife.gov.au and tell your family about your decision. Tell us about your current role at DonateLife. My current role at DonateLife Victoria is as an educator. The education team at DonateLife Victoria trains donor co-ordinators and other donation specialists in Victorian hospitals. We run educational workshops for hospital medical and nursing staff to increase their knowledge and understanding to help ensure we identify every opportunity for organ donation.

A powerful consortium has unveiled a detailed plan for Melbourne’s long-awaited airport rail link. AirRail Melbourne, comprising IFM Investors, Melbourne Airport, Metro Trains Australia and Southern Cross Station, unveiled its blueprint for the development of the rail link with the Victorian and Australian governments. The consortium has promised the fastest travel times, a premium around-the-clock service and enhanced access for regional Victorians under the $15 billion plan. The rail will have a 20-minute travel time to the city, using a redeveloped Sunshine Station super-hub and will boast around the clock trains, departing every 10 minutes during peak periods. Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said it was imperative the highly touted

project is done right. “As Melbourne marches toward becoming Australia’s largest city our infrastructure needs to keep pace,” he said. “As we expand our runways and terminal facilities we also need world-class linkages between the airport, city and regional Victoria. “Our vision is for a seamless passenger experience at the airport, properly integrated between the train carriage and the terminal.” Southern Cross Station chief executive Colin Chanter said the plan significantly bolsters the rail network. “With more than a million people passing through our station each week, Southern Cross is uniquely positioned to connect local and international travellers with Melbourne Airport, the CBD, metropolitan Melbourne and the rest of Victoria,” he said. The 27 kilometres of new track will include twin rail tunnels and open up additional capacity for rail services to Melbourne’s west. Construction would begin in late 2020.

Council’s airport input Brimbank council will make a submission to the Melbourne Airport Master Plan, which will provide a 20-year vision for the airport’s development. Mayor Margaret Giudice said the council had the chance to ensure Brimbank residents’ views are considered in any changes to the bustling airport hub. “Council wants to make sure that the Melbourne Airport expansion will benefit Brimbank and that Melbourne Airport continues to address the amenity impacts on Brimbank as a result of airport operations and development,” Cr Giudice said.

Air traffic noise and environmental concerns will form a key part of the council’s submission. “Airport noise is a key issue for our community, especially during the evening for people in Keilor Village,” Cr Giudice said. “Council wants an appropriate network of Environmental Monitoring Units (EMU) installed, including an EMU at Keilor within the City of Brimbank. We also want the airport to engage with the affected community in Brimbank in relation to the short term noise impacts while the third runway is being constructed.” Ewen McRae

Housing Commission bureaucrats have ordered the owner of a house in a former Commission estate to keep off his own property until repairs to the house are completed. The owner, Mr Dave Jennings, who began buying the new house in Warmington Ave Sunshine four years ago told The Advocate he is in “a bureaucratic mess.”

A $5.5 million, 10-cinema complex will open at Highpoint City Shopping centre before Christmas. Equipped with a cocktail bar and Dolby stereo for sound that surrounds, the cinemas will screen latest releases, simultaneously with city cinemas, Monday to Saturday from 11am and Sunday from 1.30pm.

While the big players in the gas crisis is the Victorian Networks Energy Corporation (VenCorp) and Esso-BHP, one Ardeer company is the vital link for residents and industry in Brimbank. Cr Ken Hardy Our Build Melton Hospital campaign is off to a tremendous start with over 11,000 signatures already delivered to Parliament House. I would like to thank everyone who has shown their support so far. The need for a local, 24-hour hospital in our City is clear; the health of our rapidly growing community is a priority and we cannot continue to travel long distances and wait in long queues for emergency or specialist medical care. Building a public hospital in the City of Melton will improve health outcomes and quality of life, but it will also strengthen the local economy by creating jobs and promoting investment. During an anticipated four year construction period, it’s been estimated that 550 jobs will be created, with an additional 1600 indirectly linked jobs. Once operational, we estimate the hospital would employ up to 3000 people in skilled and unskilled

positions, plus another 2179 jobs in supplying and supporting the facility. We should also consider how a hospital will stimulate the growth of related industries, such as allied health clinics, training centres and specialist consulting rooms, and the knock-on benefits to existing local accommodation providers, cafes, restaurants and retail outlets. In fact, we estimate a new hospital will generate benefits worth an extra $1 billion a year to our local economy. That’s why we’re working so hard to advocate on behalf of our City. SPORT Saints rise up in unusual circumstances The Saints received an email from the FFV notifying them off United’s decision to forfeit the game, but there was no explanation why. “When our coach got the email initially from the FFV, we really pushed to get the game to happen,” Cicak said. “Our coach did ask, but all they would say is that it was unforeseen circumstances, they didn’t give any reason.” St Albans will gladly take the spot in the state league second tier. It will be the highest division the Saints have ever played in. “We’ve made club history,” Cicak said. St Albans enjoyed a stellar season. The Saints came second to Hume City, finishing nine points back. AFL career of Ryan Griffen is over, announcing his retirement after 257 games, 202 of those as a Bulldog. The dual Charles Sutton medal winner, All Australian and former Bulldogs captain played his last game for GWS in its loss to Collingwood. Griffen’s exit from the Whitten Oval was one of the most unpleasant departures I have seen in my time at the club. I don’t know any more about the circumstances than anyone else who reads the papers, but it was not good for club or player. I always liked Griffen and found him to be good fun and a decent person. I hope Bulldogs supporters welcome him back in time, as his contribution during a difficult time should not be forgotten.

trophy cabinet at John McLeod Reserve just got a little more crowded with Deer Park adding yet another cup to the collection, defeating a brave Hoppers Crossing on Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval. Deer Park proved to be as unstoppable as ever, taking the club into new territory in suburban footy history. Kwame McHarg and Chris Stewart chalked up their sixth individual premiership medals and Stewart further enhanced his stature with a Herb Pascarl medal. A Barry Priest medal is all that is missing from his collection, and probably likely in a week’s time. Cavaliers’ great escape By Lance Jenkinson Green Gully has executed the great escape to keep its spot in the National Premier League soccer top flight next season. The Cavaliers had one foot firmly planted in the second tier NPL 2 for most of their promotion-relegation play-off final against Moreland City at AAMI Park on Sunday, but pulled off a miraculous comeback to win 3-2 in extra time. For most of the 90 minutes, relegation looked to be a reality that powerhouse Green Gully would have to come to terms with. The Cavaliers stared a harrowing two goal deficit in the face after 89 minutes. This was not a game in which the Cavaliers dominated and were out of luck either, it was one they were out-enthused and second best. When Ratip Cieli toe-poked the ball past Cavaliers goalkeeper Lucas Spinella to make it 2-0 to Moreland City with one minute of regulation time remaining, there was certainly no inkling of the miracle that was to unfold for Green Gully in stoppage time. The fourth official put four minutes up on the board – most believing it only served City a chance to lap up the spoils of their fine work. Green Gully had other ideas. The Cavaliers saw stoppage time as one final chance to preserve their top tier status. Then, out of the blue, a speculative cross nodded on by Mitch Cooper found its way to the back post, where Cavaliers defender Manny Muscat tapped home in the 91st minute to halve the deficit. Muscat’s influence when Green Gully coach Stephen Downes called on him as a second half substitute was enormous. The veteran was enterprising with his attacking play out of defence, every ball reached its intended target and his defensive energy detonated a number of City forays forward. Muscat would turn from scorer to provider for the unlikely equaliser in the 93rd minute. Jay Davies, who was a ball of energy himself all day, floated in a cross that was only half-cleared away by the City defence. Muscat put a header back into the mixer where Callum Richardson was waiting and finished with a header. The ball only crossed the line by a matter of centimetres, but it was all it took for the game to go into extra time. With the extra 30 minutes, Green Gully finally got a stranglehold on the game, though Moreland City was not without its chances. Eventually, Green Gully got right on top. Davies continued to pass and run,

football is in pretty good shape but the ongoing viability of clubs is a continuing issue. Inner suburban clubs are again feeling the pinch as the areas around them deal with a shift in population. There were many reasons behind the model Deer Park instigated. It had no juniors so it improvised and was fortunate to have the fiscal know-how to make it work. The Cavaliers went into 2018 as one of the fancied teams for the NPL title, but finished the season third-last. There has to be a summer of soul searching at Green Gully to ensure it is not in this position again in 12 months time.

St Albans has been promoted to the Football Federation Victoria women’s state league 2 next season. The Saints will go up in unusual circumstances without a ball even being kicked in the promotion-relegation play-off final against Maidstone United. The game between the Saints, who finished second in women’s state league 3 west, and United, who finished third-last in women’s state league 2 north-west, did not go ahead because United forfeited the match. Saints captain Iva Cicak was shocked the match did not go ahead. “We were really keen to play against them,” she said. “We wanted the challenge of playing a state league 2 team. “It would be a good preview for us if we were to get promoted, which we are now. We were disappointed when we heard they forfeited.” The reason behind Maidstone United’s forfeit remains a mystery to Cicak and her St Albans teammates.

Stewart cranks out another showstopper

Six of the best for Lions By Lance Jenkinson This was a premiership with six appeal for Deer Park. The Lions broke new ground in becoming the first non-amateur top flight team in AFL Victorian metropolitan leagues to register an astonishing sixth consecutive premiership with a runaway 48-point win over Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League division 1 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen is rarely lost for words, but on the day his club set a new record, he was taken aback. “I don’t know what to say to be honest,” he said. “It’s pretty raw at the moment. “It’s hard to explain.” The eight-goal margin would suggest that Deer Park had the game all on its own terms. That is half right, as the Lions did totally dominate the second half, but it was so far from the truth if you take into account a super competitive first half. Bullen was seething at quarter-time and rightly so. The Lions had the aid of a strong breeze and an extra man for 15 minutes after Hoppers Crossing’s Harley Armstrong-Weston was shown a yellow card, but they could not capitalise in the first quarter, finishing with 2.5 and a flimsy five-point lead. Hoppers Crossing had a chance to stamp its authority on the game in the second term, but they too did not make the most of the strong wind at their back. Ryan Kitchen ran into an open goal to give the Warriors a lead, but Herb Pascarl Medal winner for best-on-ground Chris Stewart replied with a stupendous goal to wrench the lead back. Instead of taking the ball out of the ruck, Stewart kicked the ball in mid-air from about 25 metres out and it fortuitously sailed straight over the goal umpires hat. from hard up on the boundary that would have been goal of the day in most other games had it not been for Stewart’s pearler. That would be the Warriors last lead of the game. James Wong and Stewart rounded out the quarter with goals to give Deer Park a 12-point lead at the main break. It was a crucial buffer because up until

that point Bullen was unusually tense on the sidelines. “I didn’t think it was going to happen for us in the first half of footy,” he said. “I thought it wasn’t going to be our day.” Never fear, Deer Park would find its very best form of the season in the second half. The Lions piled on 7.8 to 2.2 in the second half – only their wayward kicking for goal stopping it from being a total blow out. Once Mark Galea’s beautiful snap goal for Deer Park to start the third quarter was followed up by a long goal from teammate Wong, it seemed only a matter of time before the Lions would break the game open. Daniel Strnak, who had a stellar game as a small forward for Hoppers Crossing, got one against the run of play, but his team had to wait until time-on of the last quarter to get the goal umpires’ two flags waving again when Kitchen got a consolation goal. In between, it was all Deer Park. There were dominant Lions players on every line. Wong, after a slow start, became the most dangerous forward in the match, though Galea could have some claims too. Jason Kennedy was rock solid at full-back in his last game before going into retirement, while Rodney Van Riet’s experience shone through, Kwame McHarg got stronger as the game wore on and Trent Williams played a negating role. Jake McKenzie and Paul Bower, both superb ball users off half-back and through the midfield, were stiff to be second-best in the race for the best-on-ground medal. However, the honour simply had to go to Stewart. Bullen was tremendously proud to lead Deer Park to a record-breaking sixth straight flag. “It’s just a great feeling from a personal point of view and more importantly for the club to succeed six years in a row,” he said. “We could’ve lost two of the grand finals out of the last six by an inch and the challenge came at us today in Hoppers, who were sensationally coached and had a great game plan, but we managed to overcome them.”

So often during Deer Park’s record-breaking run of six Western Region Football League division 1 premierships, big man Chris Stewart has been involved in a key moment to change the course of a grand final. It should be no surprise Stewart was once again involved in all the big moments of the Lions 48-point grand final victory over Hoppers Crossing at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, earning the Herb Pascarl Medal for best-on-ground in the process. Stewart was tireless, roaming from the defensive 50 metre arc to his own team’s goal square and every blade of grass in between. He dominated in the ruck and was an imposing presence in the air when either drifting forward or backing back in defence. You hear the saying, we wish we had two of him, but Stewart covers so much ground that coach Marc Bullen would not be greedy enough to ask the football gods to deliver another Stewart. The best thing about Stewart, if you talk to his teammates, is he is all about the team. Stewart backs that up when securing the medal for best-afield in the grand final. “The Herb Pascarl was never on my mind,” he said. “There was only one medal [a premiership medal] that I wanted. “I did take a couple of good contested marks and played my role, but I thought Jake McKenzie was outstanding today, Trent Williams’ role on Ashlin Brown was sensational, and Paul Bower was an absolute star, he sold that much candy he could open his own store. “I’m obviously humbled and honoured to be recognised as the best player in the grand final.” Stewart provided three game-changing moments in the second quarter on Saturday. With the game in the balance, Stewart kicked the ball from the ruck contest from mid-air without taking possession and it struck his boot so sweetly it sailed between the big sticks from about 25 metres out. Moments later, when Hoppers Crossing was in the attack, Stewart drifted across for what could have been a goal-saving mark. The most underrated act by Stewart that quarter was his strong mark at the edge of the goal square and instead of going back with a goal he would kick 10 out of 10 times, he brought his teammate Jase Perkins into play for an easy goal. Stewart is one of only two players to play in all six flags, along with Kwame McHarg. Bullen has either been coach or player-coach in all six. By no means is it a ho hum experience for Stewart. “You feed off the players who haven’t played in one,” he said. “The boys we brought in this year, Dyson Stevens, Will Krithararis and Paul Bower, just seeing their excitement in the build-up to grand final week and the nerves on them, it’s what you play footy for.” Lance Jenkinson

Another honour shows Sarah has the Wright stuff

Sarah Wright’s unbelievable start to her football career has continued, with the Keilor midfielder claiming a second straight league best and fairest. Wright was the runaway winner in the Northern Football League Women’s division 1 best and fairest award announced last week, finishing 10 votes clear of second place. She was also the clear winner in the Essendon District and Western Region Women’s best and fairest 12 months earlier. Wright said she didn’t expect to win the NFL best and fairest, let alone come away with two awards. She was also named the most valuable player by the coaches and had earlier been named in the team of the year. “I didn’t even realise there were two awards,” she said. “I was expecting [twin sister] Gem to steal a lot of the votes. I’ve got some pretty good teammates as well. “The umpires did one award [best and fairest] and in a few games I may have spoken back to a few umpires, so I didn’t think I was a chance. “It’s really exciting and pretty surreal at the moment.”

While Wright won the award on 24 votes, she correctly predicted her sister would poll well too. Gemma finished equal second with Blues teammate Sabrine Navarro and Darebin’s Shannon Egan on 14 votes. Wright said she could not imagine such success as she only made the move from basketball to football last year. She decided to give up basketball for football half way through last season. She had been part of four Big V state championship sides with the Hume City Broncos. “I’ve always played school footy and dad has coached footy,” she said. “Kicking was difficult at the start and I struggled, but [coach] Emma [Kerry] helped with that. “I’ve got such good teammates at Keilor and I already knew a lot from basketball.” Wright said she had enjoyed the challenge of going up a competition. Last season, the Blues dominated the combined EDFL/WRFL competition on the way to winning a premiership.

This year they finished runners-up to Bendigo Thunder in NFL division 1. “We had no expectations and knew this year would be tough,” she said. “Emma just said to be competitive and see how it goes. “There was a lot more tougher competition and we learnt a lot from the opposition.” However, Wright’s season ended in disappointment. The Blues lost the grand final, and Wright fractured her neck in the game. “I’m in a neck brace at the moment,” she said. “I fractured my C6 and C7. I’m in the brace for another three weeks and hopefully it’s healed and I don’t have to have surgery. “I did it in the first quarter and played out the grand final and didn’t realise I had done it. “I was pretty sore and sorry for myself as we had lost and that was just a kick in the butt.” Bigger things could await both Wright sisters, who finished one-two in the Blues best and fairest at the weekend. “Gemma and I have both had AFL and VFL clubs speak to us,” Wright said. “I want to try and get as high as possible.” Tara Murray

From the west to the best By Lance Jenkinson The record button had been pressed and the interview with western suburbs-raised Collingwood forward Will Hoskin-Elliott was about to begin – until a familiar voice piped in before the first question could even be asked. The man with that distinctive voice was none other than Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, who enthusiastically congratulated Hoskin-Elliott on a fine game in the Magpies stunning preliminary final win over Richmond at the MCG on Friday night. It was a dream night for Hoskin-Elliott. The 25-year-old had played a big part in getting his boyhood club Collingwood into the 2018 AFL grand final. Having McGuire come in to pat him on the back after a job well done, it does not get any better. Hoskin-Elliott was smiling from ear to ear. His family, a lot of whom bleed the black and white of Collingwood, would have been immensely proud. “I’m over the moon, absolutely over the moon,” Hoskin-Elliott said. “I was a Pies fan growing up, so it’s been even better for me. “Mum and my two older sisters were pretty full-on Collingwood supporters growing up and I got passed down the jerseys, so I stuck with them and I’m glad I did.” Hoskin-Elliott will play his 100th AFL game in the grand final. A wiry medium forward with incredible game sense, a leap that takes you aback and an eye for goal, Hoskin-Elliott has carved out a fine niche for himself in the big league. Drafted by the GWS Giants in 2011, Hoskin-Elliott played 52 games over five seasons before crossing to Collingwood. The move to the Magpies has been great for club and player. Hoskin-Elliott has been a mainstay of the team, playing 22 games in his first year and is already up to 25 this season. This week, when he takes to the field in the season decider against the West Coast Eagles, it will be special. “I was there in 2010 for the draw [when Collingwood drew with St Kilda in the grand final] and I went to the grand final parade and that sort of stuff,” he said. “It’s just going to be amazing to be on the opposite side of it this time.”

Hoskin-Elliott’s game was refined at the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. The Jets turned him from a talented junior into a top four draft selection. “I got picked up in the under 15s through the Brad Johnson Squad,” he said. “I was lucky enough to get drafted at the end of the 18s carnival. “I had a good time there and still speak to a lot of the players. “It’s a very good club.” Home is where the heart is for Hoskin-Elliott. Getting to represent North Sunshine, a club that has struggled for the most part since his junior days, on the big stage will be a proud moment for him.

Who would have thought a Roadrunners junior, who only got the chance to square off with division 1 juniors when he moved to the Jets, would be gracing the hallowed turf of the MCG on that last Saturday in September? “I only played for North Sunshine as a junior and we were always down in the C-grade and had one or two good players in our team,” Hoskin-Elliott said. “I got picked up very early by the Jets and sort of spent most of my time there and didn’t get much of a chance to play North Sunshine footy after that. “I still get back down to North Sunshine now and watch all the boys. “They’re struggling a little bit, but they’ve been unreal for me.” Hoskin-Elliott is ready for the biggest stage of all. He will not be the only western suburbs nurtured player on the field on Saturday. Jets alumni Liam Duggan, from Bacchus Marsh, and Daniel Venables, from Keilor, are expected to be selected in the West Coast Eagles team.
