The three giraffes and many of their fellow zoo residents have been making short work of two willow trees donated by Melbourne Water. College asbestos blow By Tate Papworth Sunshine College’s redevelopment plans have been dealt a major blow. A $5.5 million blow-out in asbestos removal from the school means previous plans may need to be redrawn. Sunshine College school council member Vin Ryan said the community feared it would no longer get the school it was promised. “We were going to have a gym, arts centre, a senior building and a year 9 building,” he

said. “With costs mounting, this won’t happen. If we’re lucky we’ll get a year 7-8 building, but it’s not what was promised. “If you look at the school, the buildings are in a bad state – there’s no heating, which is a problem in winter.” The school has been granted $28.5 million to upgrade its facilities and had planned to consolidate its four campuses into two. But some construction has been deferred after asbestos was discovered at the school’s main campus in Lachlan Street.

The Victorian School Building Authority estimates the cost of the asbestos removal to be about $5.5 million, which wasn’t budgeted for in the initial plans. Additional funding for any deferred works is subject to future budget allocation. Education Minister James Merlino said it was a disappointing turn of events. “There’s nothing more important than the health and safety of our kids and we are getting on with the job of ridding schools of this harmful product,” he said of the asbestos.

Mr Merlino said asbestos removal had been included in the budgeting process. “But it’s still disappointing that there are higher than anticipated costs associated with removing this product from the school.” The Victorian School Building Authority is working with the school and the builder to determine which buildings will be prioritised. Building work priorities as well as educational and administrative requirements of the school will be considered when deciding which buildings will be deferred.

Keilor a winner in runway plan By Tate Papworth Aircraft noise over Keilor will decrease significantly if Melbourne Airport’s proposal for an additional east-west runway is approved, according to the airport’s preliminary draft plan. The plan, released to the public on Monday, outlines proposed flight paths and their associated noise levels. If the additional runway is built, the existing north-south runway will have decreased traffic in its southern direction,

which includes a flight path over Keilor. The plan states six per cent of the airport’s arrivals and two per cent of its departures will take place to the south. Plane departures are almost twice as loud as arrivals. But Sydenham and Keilor North will have more air traffic with flight paths to the west of the east-west runways to be used for 65 per cent of the airport’s arrivals and 29 per cent of its departures from 11pm-6am. The plan states that between 6am-11pm, flight paths to the west of the aiport will

be used for 82 per cent of the airport’s departures and nine per cent of its arrivals. The draft plan provides a strategic direction for the future development of the airport over the next 20 years. In addition to the new runway, it also proposes expanding terminal facilities south of the existing Terminal 4 precinct; expanding the internal road network and main forecourt; relocating freight activity to the Southern Freight Apron; and creating new and expanded pier facilities to the existing terminals.

A new era for retro skate shoe A passion for skate shoes from another era has turned into an international business for a Sunshine West man. Ben Brooks, a long-time collector of skate shoes, said he and many other members of the skating community had longed for the return of shoe designs from the mid-’90s and early 2000s. “People have been pushing the big companies to start issuing the older models, but there’s nothing out there,” he said. “I’d seen a lot of complaints and wanted to do something about it.” Mr Brooks soon turned his desire into action and ERAone Footwear was born. “It wasn’t a big decision I made to start a business – it all just sort of snowballed after seeing that gap in the market,” Mr Brooks said. He started with an initial run of 1000 pairs and said the rapid rate in which they sold confirmed high demand. “We shipped 500 off to Canada and took 250 pairs each for Australia and the USA,” he said. “We were pleased with how it sold and I’m hoping to have a line of shoes available soon. “There’s a second shoe just about ready to go and a third one in the works.” Mr Brooks said there’d been some learning curves along the way. “We cater for sizes 8 to 14, but what we found was that we sold out of sizes 10 to 11 really quickly and had a few 8, 9 and 14s left over, so that’s something we’ll adjust going forward.” Mr Brooks said he also planned to continue a tradition established with ’90s era footwear. “In that era, when you bought shoes, you wouldn’t just get shoes – you’d get a spare bag of laces and something free, like stickers and things like bottle openers,” he said. “We wanted to bring that back. Everyone got two pairs of laces, stickers and a key chain when they purchased our shoes. It doesn’t cost a lot to do that and that’s what it was like back then. Derrimut moves to new post code Derrimut’s post code is about to change. On August 31, the suburb’s post code will be switched from 3030 to 3026. An Australia Post spokesperson said the transfer followed an operations review. “We review our operations from time-to-time to ensure that our mail processing arrangements support the efficient and effective delivery of mail,” he said. “Following a review of Derrimut’s post code, we identified that we can deliver to our customers more efficiently by changing from 3030 to 3026.” Following the switch, Point Cook, Werribee, Werribee South, Cocoroc and Quandong will remain in 3030. Derrimut will join Laverton North in 3026. Derrimut resident Tony Malloy told 3AW the move had been a long time coming. “I’m happy,” he said. “It makes it a lot easier for location searching.” The Australia Post spokesperson said all impacted residents and businesses had been notified. “We have ensured all community members are informed of the change and what it means for them, and welcome any feedback via our social channels or by contacting us on 13 POST.” The old post code will be gradually phased out up until March, 2019. The plan will be open for public consultation until October 5. Four public forums, including one in Keilor, will be held during that time. Submissions will be considered before the plan is passed on to the federal government. The plan is expected to be formally adopted in December this year (pending ministerial approval), with implementation slated to begin next year. Deaths rock community A family is grieving and a tight-knit religious community is in shock after the death of two young children in a head-on collision in Truganina. The children have been identified as Ruana and Immanuel George from St Albans. Police last week charged a 41-year-old Rockbank man, who remains in hospital, with negligence causing serious injury and two counts of culpable driving. The children were travelling home with their parents from a birthday celebration when the collision occurred on Hopkins Road in Truganina in the early hours of Sunday, July 8. Ruana, 10, was killed at the scene. Her father, George Panicker, mother Manju Varughese and brother Immanuel George, 4, were rushed to hospital. Immanuel, also known as Manu, died at Royal Children’s Hospital about 6.30pm on Monday night. His mother remains in a critical condition. Mr Panicker was released from hospital, but has remained by his wife’s side. The family has been described as loving, quiet and religious by members of their community in Melbourne’s west. The vicar of St Mary’s Indian Orthodox Cathedral in Melbourne, Reverend Father Pradeep Ponnachan, said all were well-known members of the church. “They were a devoted, pious family,” he said. ”The church community is terribly disturbed, there is no words to explain.” Melbourne teacher Christina Prakanthan said she had taught Ruana classical Indian dancing for more than three years. She last saw the bright 10-year-old at her regular class on Friday night. “She started here as a young girl,” said Ms Prakanthan, who owns a dance school in Caroline Springs. “She was really friendly with

everyone, a bit shy in the class, a nice girl. I just loved her so much.” In a note last year, Ruana wrote: “What branthanatyam [Indian classical dancing] means to me. Trying your best and having a go, it also means to me learning all the steps and doing what the teacher says. And it also means to practise every day.” Other parents who have children at the dance school have expressed their shock.

In messages given to The Age via the dance school, parent Ujjwala Mukadam said: “Ruana had a very cute smile, and [was] my daughter Sanika’s best buddy in dance class. Lights switch completes job A generator powering the newly installed traffic lights at the busy Kings and Taylors road intersection in Delahey will soon be removed. Upgrade works to replace a roundabout with traffic lights were completed in February this year, but several residents have questioned why a generator remains on site almost five months after the lights were switched on. VicRoads regional director metro north west Vince Punaro said the lights will soon be operating without the generator. “The lights are operating as normal, however generators will continue to supply their power until next month,” he said. “We’ve requested PowerCor connect these lights to mains power as soon as possible.” The removal of the generator will complete upgrade works which also included bicycle lanes, a pedestrian crossing and upgraded footpaths designed to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The intersection is one of Brimbank’s busiest with more than 35,000 vehicles travelling through it each day. In February, Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said the upgrades would reduce congestion and improve safety. “This intersection has a terrible crash history,” she said. “These improvements will significantly improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.” Tate Papworth

Sunshine West chase charges

Police have charged a woman and a teenage boy following a car chase through Sunshine West last week. Police initiated a pursuit with an allegedly stolen car at 11am on July 10. The car was allegedly involved in a collision with a police vehicle during the incident. Three people from Hoppers Crossing were arrested soon after. A 36-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy face a number of offences, including theft of a motor vehicle, committing an offence while on bail and conduct endangering life. The woman appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 11, while the boy will face the children’s court at a later date. A 14-year-old boy was released without charge.

Police officers, at-risk young people and future leaders from the west have joined forces to tackle the Kokoda Track. The group undertook the gruelling assignment over eight days, using teamwork, trust and friendship to get them through. Acting Superintendent Adrian Healy said the trek was a success in more ways than one. “Three-quarters of the youths that took part in this were at-risk, so part of this was building a sense of trust,” he said. “There’s been a number of police programs go to Kokoda and I think part of the reasoning behind that is that it builds on the qualities of the army. However, for me one of the best aspects of this was the friendships formed. We had five different cultures represented on this

trip and the conversations that took place were really enlightening.” Acting Superintendent Healy said the historical context of the track also played a prominent role. “There were things we saw which put things into perspective,” he said. “When you think of the heroic efforts of the soldiers – coupled with starvation, injury and snipers – our efforts seem insignificant.” Mr Healy said the group put months of preparation in before taking on the trek. “In total it was eight days and seven nights carrying 15 to 20-kilogram packs, so it required some preparation,” he said. Derrimut enjoys capital gains By Ewen McRae Derrimut home owners could be sitting on a gold mine, with new research revealing house prices in the suburb have increased by the highest percentage in the country in the past decade. According to CoreLogic research, house prices in Derrimut have increased by 257.9 per cent since 2008, with the current median house price in the suburb, $656,195, dwarfing the average 10 years ago of $183,352.

The increase was significantly more than the 153.9 per cent increase experienced by Victoria’s second biggest riser, Ashburton, and also well above the suburb with the second biggest increase nationally, western Sydney’s Strathfield (up 172.6 per cent). Houses in Ardeer (145.1 per cent increase), Burnside Heights (139.9 per cent) and Keilor East (136.2 per cent) were all in the top 10 improvers for Victoria. First National Deer Park director Joe Borg said the Derrimut increase was profound.

“Derrimut is outdoing the rest of the suburbs around it, that much is very clear,” Mr Borg said. “There’s accessibility there in terms of access to the freeway, closeness to the airport and still pretty close to the city, which does make it an attractive option to buy. “It’s still a fairly young suburb … with areas like Cairnlea pretty full, it’s no wonder more people look to Derrimut to buy, which will always push prices up.” Mr Borg said there was a mix of families,

developers and investors buying in the suburb, with a high number of overseas buyers helping to drive prices up. “There’s a lot of overseas buyers, particularly from Asia and the Middle East, and the number of investor buyers has really increased in the past 10 years,” he said. “The growth in the area has been huge … even with the market having a small dip, the results in Derrimut have been strong. “I’d expect prices in the area to continue to rise for some time yet.”

Healthy outlook for St Albans hub By Tate Papworth Plans to transform the Sunshine Health, Wellbeing and Education Precinct are open for public feedback. A draft plan to guide the area’s development has been prepared by the Victorian Planning Authority in partnership with Brimbank council and state government agencies. It covers the development of more health and education services in the precinct, along with shops and cafes, short-term accommodation, offices and housing.

It also proposes new land uses in some parts of the precinct to create more jobs in the health, wellbeing and education sectors and to improve local streetscapes and environment. The precinct covers about 67 hectares in St Albans, centred on the Sunshine Hospital and includes the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the draft plan showed how the precinct could develop. She said the precinct had the potential to “accommodate” more than 7200 jobs by 2051.

“This will mean a significant change to the intensity and type of land uses and development in the area,” she said. “Having a strategic plan will ensure that we’re responding to existing and surrounding land uses, as well as considering future land uses. “It is important that future growth of the area takes place in a planned way and is informed by feedback from the local community in St Albans, and delivers significant improvement to the area.” Community members are being invited to a drop-in session to ask questions about the

draft plan. The session will be held at St Albans Community Centre on Thursday, July 26, from 5.30-8pm. Once feedback has been received, the planning authority and the council will update the draft plan and prepare planning controls for the council to consider. If approved, the community and stakeholders will have another opportunity to provide further comment later this year. Feedback on the draft plan can also be provided online at brimbank.vic.gov.au/ have-your-say until July 31.

Swish deal for Panthers Junior basketballers in Sydenham hope to have a competitive edge this season after receiving a welcome boost of equipment valued at more than $2000. The Sydenham Panthers received Molten basketballs and coaches boards to cover both the on-court and tactical sides of the game. The equipment, donated by McDonald’s Sydenham as part of the Macca’s on Your Team initiative, was presented to junior club members last week. Grant Francis of the Sydenham Panthers said the club was thrilled. “Our club prides itself on providing a level of challenge which helps our players to improve their skill level and allows them to be competitive,” he said. “To have this support from McDonald’s is fantastic.” The Macca’s on Your Team scheme provides essential sports equipment to

junior community sports clubs throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. Brimbank City Councilâ€™s annual hard waste collection commenced 2 July and will continue over a six week period finishing on 10 August. Hard waste will be collected from different residential areas of Brimbank on different weeks as shown on the map below. Two warrants were issued for her arrest for offences including obtaining property by deception, burglary and theft of motor vehicle. Trees a top treat at zoo By Tate Papworth Giraffes, elephants and orangutans have been filling up with a special snack from Taylors Lakes. Melbourne Water removed two large willow trees from the Lake Shelduck retarding basin last week and passed them on to Melbourne Zoo for use as food. Melbourne Water project manager Elmo Tharmaseelan said the zoo worked closely with the team during the removal process. “We were thrilled to learn that these trees were suitable for the zoo and it’s great to know they are going to provide a source of food for the animals,” Mr Tharmaseelan said. “We had a representative from Melbourne Zoo on site the entire time we were removing the trees to ensure that everything was done correctly for the animals. “We have been able to provide a total of approximately six tonnes of snack material for them, which is a great result. “This is the second time Melbourne Water has identified that it had suitable material to donate to the zoo and we will be looking for further opportunities to make donations like this in the future. “The roots of the willow trees were growing directly into the weir, and as a result our retarding basin upgrade works couldn’t proceed without removing them,” he said. “These upgrade works are necessary to ensure the retarding basin continues to operate safely and protect the local community from flooding.” Melbourne Zoo life science manager Adrian Howard said the “fresh browse” provided important nutritional and enrichment components for a number of Zoos Victoria animals.

I was a little kid growing up in Tripoli (Libya) and my father was employed as a petrol delivery supervisor at the American air base located three kilometres from our house, so I had the opportunity to visit the base quite often, watching and listening to American bands playing R&B, blues and jazz. I focused on the guitar players and I decided that I wanted a guitar and that I was going to be a guitar player.

You’ve toured with some of the biggest names in music such as The Supremes and John Farnham. Tell me an interesting story from those times? In the early ’80s, my band Koco got booked to support and back Helen Shapiro (a very famous English vocalist). She is best known for her 1960s UK chart toppers You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness. This was the first encounter with an international star and in order to impress Helen and the Australian agency that booked the show, the band stayed up all night to rehearse and memorise the whole show. It was a good start and the band ended up getting lots of other gigs supporting and backing Australian and international artists. What are you doing nowadays musically? I’m employed by the Department of Education

as a specialist guitar teacher and currently I’m working at Sunshine college senior campus teaching VCE year 12 group performance. I also perform with various line-ups at venues around Melbourne. My aim is to promote the guitar as a valid comping instrument and further exploring its possibilities as a soulful and melodic instrument. What do you like about Altona? I discovered Altona when I met Grace (my wife) in 1999. At the time, I was living in Werribee … when she took me to Altona, I fell in love with the place after the first visit. I love the Esplanade, the horizon and the ever-changing colour of the sea, the smell of the seaweed and the abundance of open spaces. What would you change? Absolutely nothing – it’s perfect the way it is. What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery and why? I love Mosaic and the amazing ambience and the fact that the management promotes live music three nights a week. I also hang around Pier 71 to catch up with friends and to have a taste of Italy. Get it right on bin night: organic waste

Mayor’s Message

Cr Bob Turner Council prides itself on hosting vibrant community events that everyone can enjoy. This month is no exception. Join us on Saturday 21 July, at the Papercut Colour! exhibition opening at Melton Library and Learning Hub.

Growing Suburbs Fund, for projects ranging from the development of recreation reserves across the City, to community pavilions and centres. We expect to be notified of the outcome in the next couple of months and will keep you updated.

This exhibition was created by participants in artist, Anu Patel’s, Papercut Colour workshops featuring age-old symbols of unity, longevity, peace and love. We also invite you to come along another great PopCulture event on Friday 27 July, and celebrate a special Christmas in July screening of comedy classic, Home Alone. And finally, I’d like to congratulate all the women who are about to take part in the next Daughters of the West program. Starting this week, participants will learn about exercise, healthy eating, mental health and gender equity, and as a graduate of the Sons of the West program, I know firsthand the benefits this has on health and wellbeing.

Another thing that Council prides itself on is advocating on behalf of our community to secure funding for the timely delivery of critical infrastructure. We recently submitted 12 funding applications to the State Government’s Melton City Council is urging residents to get it right on bin night, and be careful when sorting their rubbish, as a large number of green organic waste bins have been contaminated. Materials such as nappies, general waste, rocks, building materials, plastic bags and bricks have all been found in in kerbside green waste bin collections. This meant Council was forced to send the material to landfill. Since January this year, about 33 tonnes of green waste has had to be diverted to landfill because of excessive contamination. Council is concerned with the amount of green waste being sent to landfill, as the material could be better used in farming and agricultural environments. It is also becoming costly for Council, and in turn, ratepayers over time. Collection drivers, Council officers and bin inspectors will be ramping up patrols in a bid to reduce contamination among organic materials. Residents found to have contaminated their organics bins may be fined up to $155, depending in what type of waste is found. Those who are unsure of which bins to place their rubbish within can call Council on 9747 7200, for more information.

Council has allocated $2.9 million to the design and construction of City Vista sports precinct, which will include ovals, tennis and netball courts and a pavilion in Fraser Rise, a rapidly growing suburb in our community. We have also committed further funding for stage 1 of the MacPherson Park redevelopment project. Improvements will include a new sports pavilion, car park, landscaping, entry road improvements, and a multipurpose synthetic field. Funds have also been allocated to the completion of the long-awaited Caroline Springs Leisure Centre redevelopment project, and the construction of the new sub-regional tennis facility. The Lions only led by 10 points at half-time despite having the “lion’s share of play”. “We probably went too wide with our forward entries and just couldn’t capitalise,” Bullen said. “To Spotswood’s credit, they had

some really good match-ups and some of their younger players were causing us havoc.” The second half was all one way traffic though. Deer Park piled on 11 goals to three after half-time for a runaway win. Kwame McHarg was back to his best with six goals, while Dyson Stevens and Will Krithararis were dominant at the coal face. A handful of youngsters stepped up for the Lions, but none more so than Aaron Britten, who was a nigh on unstoppable half-back. Deer Park is equal on nine wins with Werribee Districts, Altona and ladder leader Hoppers Crossing. Meanwhile, Sunshine’s finals chances hit a snag with a 28-point loss to Altona, Caroline Springs had 57-point loss to Hoppers Crossing, Albion lost by 20 points at Wyndhamvale and St Albans was no match for Werribee Districts in a 78-point defeat. Falcons’ tough run home By Tara Murray City West Falcons have moved into the Victorian Netball League championship division top four, but the hard work is just beginning. With a tough draw in the run home, the Falcons know that any wrong move could see them miss finals. On Wednesday night, the Falcons produced a strong four quarter performance in a 71-38 win against the Ariels. Falcons coach Marg Lind said it was a strong all round performance and they made sure they kept their foot down all game. “We played well,” she said. “We got off to a blinder of a start. They reshuffled after the first half and got better, but we were still on top. “We’ve still got some things to iron out though.” The win coincided with the Falcons having their four Australian Netball League players all back on the court together. Jane Cook enjoyed her return to the side, shooting 59 goals from 66 attempts. Lind said the connection of Cook and wing attack Maggie Lind was really strong. “Jane is a great post up player. “She had a bit of fun. She’s got some good friends in the team and she just relaxed.” Lind was full of praise for Cook’s shooting partner Tahnysha Salanoa, whose confidence is growing. The umpires gave Zoe Davies best on court, while Anger Akec was given the two votes. The win moves the Falcons into the top four and just four points off second place, but they have a tough draw ahead of them. They face three of the top five sides in the run home. “We’re mindful that we might have to go undefeated to make the top four,” Lind said. “The other teams in the top five have an easier run. “We’ll give it a go, we have nothing to lose.” It’s the same mentality for the Falcons division 1 and under-19 sides, which both sit fifth after good wins against the Ariels too. Lind said having a full championship division team would help the other two teams. Uneeq Palavi stepped back into division 1 on Wednesday night and shot 51 goals from 54 attempts. don’t pretend to be an expert when it comes to watching a footballer and being able to say with certainty he will or won’t make it. There are too many variables, and after talking to various recruiters over the years, there are many I don’t understand. All I will say is, if Sam Collins did not play his way back onto an AFL list last Saturday with his performance for Werribee against Essendon, I will never speak about any player’s ability again. He was so outstanding it was ridiculous. It was one of the most complete games you could ever witness from a key defender. Marks, spoils, tackles, smothers, hitting targets – he did it all. If he had run up the grandstand stairs and topped up the supporters’ beers, it would not have been the least bit surprising. While I still can talk about players’ ability, I hope the recruiters are looking at Josh Porter and Keegan Bray because they both have the X factor.

Moynahan is not a household name in sport in the west yet his passing last week in Russia will be felt by many. Bernie played cricket at Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club and made the club the centre of his universe. Not surprisingly, he was a Life Member. He was also a Hall of Fame inductee at the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club. Bernie was on committees, and even when he wasn’t, was one of the people who worked tirelessly for the club. He enjoyed life and travelled the world watching sport. Bernie’s life ended in Russia on a trip to watch the Socceroos. He developed pneumonia and complications set in, which resulted in his death. A sad way for his life to end, especially for his family, who were helpless as events took place. Condolences to his family and many friends in sport in the west.

done to the Wyndhamvale Football Club on its first senior win of the 2018 WRFL season last weekend against Albion. The Falcons have been doing it hard and after 11 losses must have wondered whether a win was possible. Being the only senior team not to have a win in the three divisions is not a sought-after title and they have avoided that stigma. Can they avoid relegation? The next two games, away to St Albans and home to Caroline Springs, will decide their fate. Similar story for last year’s grand finalists Sunshine … if they are to make the finals, they need to step up in the next two weeks or it is an early finish for the Kangaroos. Kevin Hillier

Lind said it was a really big game for them. “They are really experienced,” she said. “Last time we played them, it was like rabbits in headlights. “[Now] We’ve got that enthusiasm and confidence that we’ve built the last few weeks.”

Two games were circled on the fixture as crucial for reigning premiers Deer Park in its bid for a double chance in the Western Region Football League division 1 this season. Matches against finals contenders Spotswood, which they won by 62 points at John McLeod Oval on Saturday, and last year’s runners-up Sunshine Kangaroos, who they meet at Kinder Smith Reserve this upcoming Saturday, are just about the only hurdles facing the Lions in the run home in their quest for a top three finish. The Lions will only face one more finals contender in their last five games, so if they can nail a win over Sunshine, they will be well on their way to an all-important double chance. Lions coach Marc Bullen labelled Saturday’s victory over Spotswood – albeit in a game which saw both sides severely undermanned – as pivotal in the big picture. “It’s a massive eight quarters of footy against Spotswood and Sunshine in the context of the season,” he said. While both sides had key players missing, Deer Park showed its strength in depth.

Young skipper leads by example By Lance Jenkinson When it came to the big moments for Vic Metro at the AFL under-18 national championships, it was invariably Xavier O’Halloran who stood up and pointed the way. Whenever the Western Jets have needed an impact at a crucial stage of a game, such as an important clearance or a team-lifting defensive act, it is often O’Halloran answering the call. It’s what the 18-year-old from Altona does and it’s the reason why he was trusted with the Western Jets captaincy at the start of the TAC Cup season and then evolved into Vic Metro skipper by mid season. “I’ve embraced it since day one and loved every minute of it,” O’Halloran said of the captaincy duties. “It’s about paving the way for your teammates 100 per cent of the time. “If you’re getting the majority of them to follow the example you set, you’re doing the right job. “That includes showing them in times when a kid needs to step up late in a game that I can step up and do the job, and hopefully that becomes contagious and the rest of the boys can follow that too.” O’Halloran, a powerful midfielder out of St Bernard’s College, has excelled as captain from day one. Jets coach Torin Baker has described him as a “strong leader” and reiterates that almost on a weekly basis. Firstly, O’Halloran is a stand-up citizen, no job is too small for him behind the scenes. “It’s just the little things that are important as captain,” he said. “Whether that be picking up a drink bottle at training that someone might’ve left on the ground or sweeping the rooms after the game.

“It’s also showing support for your teammates on and off the field. “If they’re having a bad day, someone is injured or something has happened in their home life, it’s sending a message or giving them a call to make sure they’re OK.” It’s the little things that translate into O’Halloran’s game on the field too. Sure, the AFL recruiters will remember his huge pack mark and calm set shot goal from

They will have the markings in their note pads to remind them of his big third quarter to get his team back in the match against South Australia. Fresh in their minds will also be his exquisite pass to Ben King for the match-winning goal against Allies. It’s the things that might go unnoticed

observing from the grandstands that O’Halloran likes to pride himself on and endears him to his teammates. “I just try and go week-in, week-out and just give four quarters of consistent effort,” he said. “Whether that be one per centers, putting on some body pressure or some tackles or a block for my teammates. “I just start with the team things, try and base my game from that and work my way from there.” O’Halloran, who got his start in Auskick at Altona Juniors, was surprised when he got the nod to lead the Big V, but he should not have been, considering his body of work. “When I heard the news I was actually quite shocked,” he said. “I didn’t expect to get that role, but I was certainly stoked about it and extremely honoured to lead such a group of boys in an elite program.” O’Halloran was disappointed that Vic Metro finished the championships as runners-up, but SA was stronger for longer in the decisive game. His next mission is to lead the Jets “deep into the finals”, while concentrating on maximising his grades in year 12 at St Bernard’s. O’Halloran is tipped to be drafted to the AFL later this year. “That’s always been the dream since I was a young kid,” he said. O’Halloran is the July nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. O’Halloran will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist him in achieving his sports goal.

Saints march back into the finals mix It was no masterpiece, but cashing in all three points was all that mattered for the St Albans Saints. After entering the match on the back of consecutive losses, there was heightened urgency for the Saints to find a way back on to the winners’ list and they did so with a scrappy and somewhat lucky 1-0 win over Sunshine George Cross at Knights Stadium on Saturday. Saints coach Kruni Razov was breathing a sigh of relief after a frustrating day at the office. “We made it very hard for ourselves, but in the end it was a job well done,” Razov said. “We didn’t want to make it three straight losses, that’s for sure, so that was pleasing … the win gets ourselves back in the mixer there.” Take the first half in isolation and Razov has little to be downcast about. All that was lacking for St Albans in the opening 45 was finishing as they dominated possession and created a host of scoring opportunities. Rodrigo Covarrubias missed from the penalty spot, but made amends with a goal two minutes before half-time, which turned out to be the winner. Amid the goal celebrations, Sunshine’s Brandon Scerri was brandished a red card. With the Georgies down to 10 men, you would have thought St Albans would maintain its dominance, but that was far from the case. Sunshine played its best soccer a man down and had a chance from the penalty spot in second half stoppage time to find an equaliser, but failed to convert. “I was very happy with the first half, not happy with the second half,” Razov said. “We went into cruise control and made it hard for ourselves. I don’t know what it is, even about five or six weeks ago against Eastern Lions, the same thing happened, they got a red card late in the first half and we just took our foot off.” The keys to the victory for St Albans were

St Albans moved into third place on the ladder ahead of a showdown with fourth-placed North Geelong Warriors at Churchill Reserve on Sunday. Sunshine remains on the bottom ahead of a trip to Werribee City on Sunday. In the top tier NPL, Green Gully fell out of the top six after a 1-0 loss to Northcote City at Green Gully Reserve. The Cavaliers face a massive game against Melbourne Knights at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday night. Wayne Rooney, who has played with Everton and now ManU. He’s the same age as me. He came from a small club and made a big impact. His was the most expensive transfer in the early 2000s and he’s the highest goalscorer for England and ManU. How did you get interested in football? It started in childhood, but I got a renewed love for the international game when I worked in a backpackers hostel in Melbourne’s CBD in my early 20s. I met heaps of people from all over Europe who were mad keen on football and my fandom got a whole new lease on life. Now I’m a full-on supporter. Which team do you think will win this year? France. Their first team is full of superstars such as Pogba, Griezmann and Martial. France is so strong it’s been said they could field a first team from the bench. Their stamina and cardio capacity will set up France for a win.

France wins World Cup thriller By Ben McKay The French were dancing in the Moscow rain after they became World Cup champions for a second time with a 4-2 defeat of Croatia. France is rejoicing in a new generation of footballing heroes after Les Bleus defeated Croatia 4-2 in a stunning World Cup final success in Moscow. Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba fired France to their second World Cup triumph on Sunday at the Luzhniki Stadium, 20 years after their first win on home soil. The most celebrated tournament in a generation enjoyed the highest-scoring decider since 1966. Much like the past month, the final had everything. Amid the Parisian next-gen pair’s fine goals and Ivan Perisic’s thunderbolt, there was a first own goal in 21 finals, a VAR-confirmed penalty and a goalkeeping blunder that handed Croatia a late lifeline. Crashes of thunder and the occasional downpour only added to the biggest occasion in world sport. Even notorious artist-activist group Pussy Riot got in on the act, stopping play in the second half with a pitch invasion to protest political repression in host nation Russia. But at full-time, it was the French players who were joyously running laps of the pitch, tricolour in hand. On this evidence and the youth of the swashbuckling French champions, this side just might dominate international football for years to come. French coach Didier Deschamps proclaimed: “How marvellous!”

“We did not play a huge game but we showed mental quality,” he said. “And we scored four goals anyway. We are proud to be French, to be Bleus … vive le Republic!” Led by a man-of-the-match performance by Antoine Griezmann, France weathered early Croatian attacks to score with their first effort. Griezmann sent a free kick, dubiously won, into no-man’s land on 18 minutes, with Mario Mandzukic glancing into the net for an own goal. Perisic responded for Croatia soon after, winning a free kick he would score from.

Indefatigable Luka Modric’s floated set piece could not be cleared and fell to the left winger, who turned N’Golo Kante on the edge of the box to thrash the ball home with a slight deflection from Raphael Varane. The star Croatian turned villain 10 minutes later, handballing clumsily in the box for a penalty referee Nestor Pintana awarded after video assistance. Griezmann made no mistake from the spot for his fourth goal of the campaign. Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic couldn’t abide the decision, although he said he respected it.

“In a World Cup final you do not give such a penalty, but it in no way diminishes France’s win,” he said. In the 20 minutes after the break, France became world champion. Mbappe showed his deadly pace in a right-wing breakaway, pulling back for Griezmann who found Pogba to score on his second attempt. Then came the 19-year-old’s moment as he followed Pele to become just the second teenager to score in a World Cup final. Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic couldn’t save Mbappe’s effort as France steamrolled the underdogs. Despite going the distance to defeat Denmark, hosts Russia and England through the knockout stage, Croatia had a foothold on another startling recovery on 68 minutes. French captain Hugo Lloris attempted to turn Mandzukic, but the striker stopped him in his tracks and deflected the ball into the goal to make the score 4-2. But when Croatia needed to find another gear in the final 20 minutes, the task was simply too tough. Russia president Vladimir Putin and FIFA supremo Gianni Infantino presented the victorious French with their medals in torrential rain. The trophy was next before the players celebrated. The victory makes Deschamps, captain of the France’s victorious 1998 side, the third man to win the World Cup as player and coach after Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer. Midfield powerhouse Modric was named as the tournament’s best player after the match, and awarded the Golden Ball. The dynamic Mbappe picked up FIFA Young Player award.
