Former mayors return Two former Brimbank council mayors have been given another shot at representing the municipality. Brimbank’s first democratically elected representatives in more than seven years were provisionally named at the weekend, 2605 days after the previously elected council was sacked and replaced with administrators. Two councillors from the sacked class of 2009, Sam David and Margaret Giudice, were declared councillors at an official ceremony at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre yesterday. Ms Giudice, who was found to have breached the Local Government Act by the Victorian Ombudsman in 2009 for submitting misleading expense forms for her mobile phone, told Star Weekly earlier this year she would use two phones – one for personal use and another for council business – if elected. The majority of the new council are women, with the Grasslands ward all female: Victoria Borg, Duyen Anh Pham and Lucinda Bailey. Former councillor Troy Atanasovski missed out on Grasslands, despite collecting the third-highest number of first preference votes, 3094. In the hotly contested Harvester ward, John Hedditch, Kim Truong and Sam David came out on top. “I didn’t think I’d be this excited,” Mr Hedditch, a long-time Sunshine community advocate, told Star Weekly on Monday. “It’s a really diverse and multicultural council, lots of women, lots of different cultures and [political] independents,” he said. “The council needs a fresh start and the work begins in earnest tomorrow. 12328938-HM44-16

It’s not about shady backroom deals with developers.” Former mayor Giudice joins Georgeina Papafotiou and Bruce Lancashire in the Taylors ward. “This is sweet vindication,” she said. “I’ve worked really hard to get back.” Virginia Tachos and Daniel Allan will fill the Horseshoe Bend ward positions. Victorian Electoral Commission spokesman Mike Lagastes said the VEC had not so far received any request for a recount. Full polling information is available at www.vec.vic.gov.au

Soul searching, vaudeville style Aurora Kurth will take to the stage this month in one of the leading roles in variety and vaudeville show The Carnival of Lost Souls. The Albion resident will play the fortune teller and a central role in a love triangle that dominates the show’s narrative. She said the performance is about an old-school style travelling circus that features elements of cabaret, illusion, acrobatics and circus. “And it’s all drawn together under this rich, gothic palette,” she said. The Carnival of Lost Souls is set in the 19th century and is performed in the Melba Spiegeltent. It is making its global debut in Melbourne before moving on to travel the international festival circuit. It will run on November 11 and 12 at Melba Spiegeltent, 35 Johnson Street, Collingwood.
