United’s incredible feat

Calder United’s legacy continued to grow last Sunday as it won its sixth consecutive Nike F.C. Cup.

United claimed victory against the Bulleen Lions in an even contest. Both teams had plentyofshotsongoalearlywithoutmanaging a score. It wasn’t until the 78th minute when United’s Lucy Richards broke through to give them the lead.

Raquel Deralas then put through a 90th minute score to give them the 2-0 win and the cup.

After winning the first five cups under formercoachMarkTorcaso,Unitedcontinued on their winning ways under the new regime of co-coaches Helen Winterburn and Nathan Maiorana.

Winterburn said it was especially special with a new-look Calder and a younger squad, it was a great achievement.

“It’s a testament to the players, they’ve worked really hard this season,” she said.

“We’ve been building through the year and to come out on top, in a pretty tough game againstBulleenwhocausedussomeproblems.

“The girls stuck to the game plan, they knew what we wanted to do.”

United and Bulleen faced off in a National Premier League Women’s fixture on the weekend prior to the cup final, which gave Winterburn an understanding of how the Lions were going to approach the game.

“Theydidn’tlooktochangetoomuchIdon’t think,“ she said. “For us, having dominated the game the week before but not scoring, we had something on our backs.

“We set up in a very similar way as we did the previous week and then it was just about being clinical and scoring those goals when we did make it to the finals.”

Alana Cerne and Natasha Dakic have both returned to United from Western United and been key factors behind the team’s resurgence in recent weeks. Both players starred in the weekend’s final.

“[Cerne] was fantastic yesterday, breaking everything down and even getting forward and creating some opportunities for herself, she’s obviously had a stand out A-League season and it’s great for her to continue to build on the back of that with Calder,” Winterburn said.

“Tasha (Dakic) was solid yesterday, she’s got great passing ability and defensively she’s switched on, she can win balls in the air.

“To have those players back in the middle of your team, just helps definitely, they just help with the game and the players around them as well.”

With only one regular season match left against Bayside United in the NPLW, United needs to win to guarantee themselves a spot in the finals. The match was set to be played after deadline.

The club has already won two titles this season and is hoping to add the third to the cabinet.

“It’s the final push,“ she said. “I think we as a team, we’re coming into form at the right time at the back end of the season, which is what you want heading into finals.

“We can’t underestimate Bayside, we need to make sure we’re switched on for that game, the focus goes back in now.”

Have your say on accessing kindergarten in Brimbank

Council is seeking feedback on what is most important to families when accessing a kindergarten program. The Victorian Government has announced big changes to kindergarten as part of the Best Start, Best Life Reform. The introduction of threeyear-old and free kindergarten have already resulted in more demand for kindergarten in Brimbank.

We want to understand how these changes will impact on Brimbank families and what this means for how we plan and deliver services. We are seeking your feedback on:

• How the changes to kindergarten will impact how you plan to access kindergarten and childcare; and

• What most influences your decision when choosing a local kindergarten?

Charity wagon rolls on in west

We will use this information to:

• Review our Kindergarten Registration and Enrolment Policy, including whether new local criteria are introduced that will further prioritise access; and

• Inform future planning for kindergarten provision in Brimbank. Visit yoursay.brimbank.vic.gov.au to have your say until Sunday 17 September

West Welcome Wagon, a charity based in Sunshine that provides everything refugees and asylum seekers need to set up a home, have been given a leg up to help deliver critical services for those in the west.

West Welcome Wagon supports 700 households in Melbourne’s west, and provides a range of essential items including, beds, cots, white goods, kitchen utensils, food parcels, clothing, and more.

The charity has been awarded a federal grant that will pay for volunteers to undertake test and tag courses that will qualify them to check donated electrical goods and ensure they are in safe working order.

Chief executive Colette McInerney said the charity is supporting people from 42 countries, including Myanmar, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Iraq.

“Demand is constant for white goods in particular. They are out the door almost immediately. And during these cold winter months demand has also been strong for blankets and heaters,” she said.

West Welcome Wagon has grown enormously since its small beginnings as a Facebook group 10 years ago.

The charity now has two warehouses, two delivery vans, four paid staff and a band of dedicated volunteers.

Chair of the organisation Chris Scerri said thatduringitstimeacrossthepast10years,the charity has supported 2100 households to get back on their feet.

“Itissuchrewardingwork.Itislife-changing for the families,” he said.

High on the list of needs now for West Welcome Wagon are more volunteers and additional funding.

Fraser MP Dr Daniel Mulino said the staff and volunteers work hard so that people who come to Australia can create a home.

“Being able to check the safety of so many products – such as toasters, kettles, microwaves and heaters – will stop them going into landfill, which is also good for the environment,” he said.

Help to hatch a dragon

Local artist and designer Jennifer Tran is calling on the Vietnamese community to take part in a collaborative art project that celebrates traditional Vietnamese culture and stories.

TranisworkingalongsideMemeticaDaniele Poidomani to make the giant Lac Long Quan dragon, an inflatable dragon lantern that will be paraded at the Brimbank Be Bold Festival in October.

Tran is seeking help from the community to contribute in the making and sewing of the dragon.

“This is really a project for the community to be a part of, one that is designed and made by the people,” she said.

The inflatable dragon is a nod to the Vietnamese folklore of 100 eggs where †he Dragon Lord, Lac Long Quan falls in love

with Au Co, a fairy who gives birth to a sac containing 100 eggs from which 100 children were born, becoming the origin of the Vietnamese people.

Tran said it is important to create art that celebrates Vietnamese culture and stories in public spaces.

“I want to celebrate our community and our folklore, especially for the next generation in our community. It is so important for them to learn about their identity,” she said.

“The dragon represents leadership. We’ve become a community that is defined in the western suburbs of Melbourne and I want to celebrate that.”

The community is invited to visit the Bluestone Church Arts Space from August 22-25, between 9.30am-6.30pm to help out.

Meeting put off a week

It will be five weeks between council meetings in Brimbank after councillors failed to form a quorum at the meeting held on August 15.

Under the Local Government Act, a majority of councillors must be in attendance to form a quorum and allow for the meeting to proceed. The meeting on August 15 was deemed to have lapsed after 30 minutes from the scheduled starting time as council failed to have a majority of councillors present.

Brimbank council people, partnerships and performance director Georgie Hill said councillors in attendance for the August 15 meeting were Bruce Lancashire, Sam David, Maria Kerr, Jasmine Nguyen and Jae Papalia.

Lights, camera, action

Year 6 students from St Peter Chanel Primary School in Deer Park have created a series of e-safety films to help promote positive cyber behaviour.

Students created the films in response to a proactive incursion by local police officers who visited the school to speak about the ways young kids can stay safe online, including the dangers to look out for and what help is available to support them.

Students were tasked with writing a story that encapsulated their topic, and went to work to turn their story ideas into a script, complete

a storyboard, and film and edit their movies.

Year6schoolleadersJesseandChloesaidthe presentations took the groups a few weeks to create and are connected to the United Nations declaration about the ‘Rights of a Child’.

“The cyber safety presentation is about what we have learnt about staying safe online and tips for when you might get into tricky situations,” they said.

Students Guilia and Chloe created a film with their group members about the effects of videogamestoexplaintheimpactsofspending too much time on devices.

“It is extremely important that children understandthedangersbehindtechnologyand

the benefits of it too,” they said.

Students Jada and Soa said a highlight of the project has been getting to know new people, and collaborating with others.

“We really enjoyed creating these presentations with our group. All the amazing, fun ideas, the feeling of working together, and we love filming, especially the opportunities to participate in acting.”

The films were premiered to year 4 and 5 students at the school on Friday, August 18, alongside the police officers who first spoke with the students on the topic and the parents andfamiliesofthestudentsinvolvedincreating the films.

Cr Virignia Tachos was away on approved leave of absence, however an explanation has not been offered as to the absence of Crs Victoria Borg, Sarah Branton, Thuy Dang, Thomas O’Reilly and Ranka Rasic.

“Reasons for councillors being on approved leave of absence or simply being an apology for a specific meeting are not kept on the public record,” Ms Hill said.

Included in the agenda for the meeting on August 15 was the adoption of the new Brimbank Governance Rules 2023, which has received backlash from residents regarding concerns about the censoring or editing of public questions. The meeting will be rescheduled for Tuesday, August 22 at 7pm.

Boost for students in the west

Victoria University (VU) and local community-basedorganisation,commUnity+ have established a new alliance to strengthen critical services in the west and help boost employment pathways for students.

The focus on the new partnership includes student placements and internships with commUnity+, employment opportunities for graduating students, course content and guest lectures, research opportunities and community events.

Through a range of programs, commUnity+ offers adult education, Neighbourhood House and Legal Services – through the Brimbank

Virgin

Melton Community Legal Centre – as well as community engagement and development activities.

Beginning as a small residents’ action group at the Deer Park Neighbourhood House, commUnity+ has fundamental focus on positive change, growth, and empowerment.

commUnity+chiefexecutiveTraceyGaudry said the partnership provides opportunities for individuals to thrive and contribute to a brighter future.

“Through our partnership with VU, the purpose of commUnity+ is magnified as we continue to support, strengthen and enable

individuals and diverse communities in the west to flourish,” she said.

VU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker said the partnership will aid in developing new opportunities for the university’s student cohort.

“At the same time, we’re strengthening critical legal and community services and outcomes for the people of Melbourne’s west. Students, researchers, local employers, and stafffrombothorganisationswillundoubtedly benefit greatly from this partnership,” he said.

The partnership is a commitment to those who are marginalised or disadvantaged in the

Mary celebration 40 years old

As a young man, Frank Galea remembers being honoured with the important duty of carrying the statue of Santa Marija on his shoulders in a procession around his village in Malta.

The traditional procession is a part of the Festa Santa Marija Assunta, celebrated on August 15 each year and marks the ascent into heaven by the Virgin Mary.

Celebrating Deer Park’s 40th year of the Festa Santa Marija Assunta, the community came together last week to mark the occasion at St St Peter Chanel Catholic Church.

MrGaleasaidthetraditionaloccasionstems from back home in Malta, where the village came to life to prepare for the celebration.

“Back home we used to have eight strong men carry the life size statue on their shoulders, and carry it around the village in a procession that would take three to four hours. I first got to be a bearer when I was 17 up until I was 21, and each of us had approximately 70 kilograms on our shoulders,” he said.

“Back then in the village we would have 500 to 600 people in the church, it was so packed you couldn’t drop a needle in it.

“Now, every year, we do exactly the same thing in Deer Park as we would back home.”

Outside of Malta, Australia is home to the largest Maltese population in the world, with the majority of Maltese immigrants residing in Melbourne.

Mr Galea said it is important for the community to find time to come together.

“There is not one family in Malta who doesn’t have a descendant living in Australia,” he said.

“That is why we celebrate it, it is in our blood.”

west, with an aim to better support shared communities.

Community lawyer and VU alumnus John Kon, now working as a lawyer with commUnity+,has a unique insight to the benefits of the collaboration.

“I believe this new partnership will provide opportunity for VU students to enhance their practical legal knowledge outside the classrooms and as a former VU student, providing mentorship to VU students will be a great honour for me in giving back to VU fraternity and in preparing the next generation of Australian Lawyers,” he said.

IBAC findings under review

The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) recently handed down its report into allegations of corrupt conduct involving councillors and property developers within Casey council.

Now, eyes are being cast onto councils across Victoria to consider the recommendations handed down in the Operation Sandon report, which includes a recommendation for a public register of interactions between councillors and developers.

Brimbank people, planning and performance director Georgie Hill said council has plans to consider the recommendations handed down by IBAC.

“While Brimbank council currently does not have a register of councillor interactions with developers, in the coming months we will be considering future governance arrangements in light of the Operation Sandon report and associated directions from Local Government Victoria,” she said.

In a statement issued by Premier Daniel Andrews, the state government said it intends to strip councils of some of their planning powers in order to combat corruption between developers and councillors.

“The IBAC report’s 34 recommendations will be given appropriate consideration, but it is the clear position of the government that the role of local councils in significant planning decisions should be reduced and we will have more to say on this matter.”

Lend a helping hand

Keilor’s Horseshoe Bend Reserve has laid dormant without plans for its future since closing in 2010, however a small group of passionate locals is looking to change that.

Born out of time spent in COVID-19 lockdowns, the group saw the significance of local green spaces and have since committed their time to form the Horseshoe Bend Community Group (HBCG) in an effort to bring life back to the local landmark.

HBCG member Marjorie Garcia said those passing by may have noticed the group’s handiwork with the addition of veggie crates behind the cottage and a revival of the existing fruit orchard.

The team now has plans to continue work at the site and are calling for Brimbank locals to join and help beautify the historic

community space.

“We’re looking to get more hands on deck to help revitalise the space. You don’t need to have a green thumb or be a gardener, our group is open to anyone who wants to get outdoors and socialise,” Ms Garcia said. “The group is all about making Horseshoe Bend Reserve a community hub for everyone to enjoy.”

With workshops ranging from beekeeping, food preservation, wicking beds and establishing an edible garden. Volunteers are being called to help not only with gardening, but also design and social media.

HBCG will be holding an annual general meeting on Wednesday, August 23, at 7pm at the Keilor Reserve Sports Club.

Update on Sunshine landfill

The EPA has granted Barro Group a three week extension on the deadline to provide a Landfill Hotspot Remediation Design. The final design must be verified by an independent EPA appointed auditor and is due on September 29. The design will detail how Barro Group plans to extinguish the remaining landfill hotspot. The plan must use the latest site information and best practice techniques and will include smoke, dust, and odour suppression methodologies. The EPA regularly inspects the Sunshine landfill, with the most recent inspections held on July 26 and August 10.

Police seize homemade firearms

Police have charged a man and seized two homemade firearms at a property in Keilor Park. Police executed a warrant at the property on August 14, as part of an investigation into the alleged trafficking of drugs of dependence and possession of firearms in the area. A 43-year-old Keilor Park man was charged with two counts of a prohibited person possessing a firearm, four counts of negligently dealing with proceeds of crime and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail. Police found two homemade firearms, numerous allegedly stolen identification documents and a Finks outlaw motorcycle gang jumper.

Funds to make local roads safer

Brimbank council has been selected as one of the first 11 councils to receive funding to develop, design and plan road safety improvements along council-managed roads, intersections and precincts.

Council will work closely with the Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission over four years to identify, plan, develop and deliver more road safety upgrades on local roads.

Road safety and improved transport infrastructure has been noted as a key priority for Brimbank council.

Brimbank mayor Bruce Lancashire said

council is looking forward to implementing road safety upgrades on local roads across the municipality.

“Our aim is to ensure there are safer vehicles on our road network, safer road designs, safer vehicle speeds and safer behaviour by those who use our road networks,” Cr Lancashire said.

Council’s Transport Priorities Paper 2022 identifies issues with the current transport network, and proposes service solutions and infrastructureprojectstoimproveconnectivity and safety in and around Melbourne’s western suburbs.

A great way to warm up

Lacing up and heading out for a run during the cold winter months can be a difficult task for many.

However some local residents are banding together for a free community park run as they brace the cold together.

At8ameverySaturdaymorning,Brimbank park is filled with runners, joggers and walkers joining in on a weekly five kilometre community park run event.

The event is entirely run by volunteers like Amanda Shinton, who describes the group as a charity, “run by the community, for the community”.

Ms Shinton said locals of all abilities and from varying age groups are encouraged to join and take part at their own pace.

“The best part is just seeing people improve week on week. You see them in the beginning struggling to complete the course, then all of a sudden they are completing the five

kilometres with no problem at all,” she said.

“This event is not a competition, we encourage both runners and walkers to participate. In the end, it’s great to see their smiling faces and how proud they are of themselves.”

Ms Shinton said while the course can be challenging, it is all finished by 9am where participants can stop off and grab a coffee at the local cafe.

“This is a fun, free event where you get to meet people from the community. It’s a good way to improve your health without costing you money which can be a challenge for people these days with the cost of living. It’s really about doing something for yourself,” she said.

The paper includes road projects to address congestion and traffic flow, and advocates for morepublictransportandactiveinfrastructure to encourage walking and cycling.

Council has been advocating for investment to prioritise improvement and enhance safety at high-risk locations.

Council said it embraces the safe system approach to road safety and supports the state government’s Towards Zero campaign which aims to prevent anyone being killed or seriously injured on the Victorian road network.

The state government said about 33 per

cent of road trauma takes place on local council-managed roads each year.

Transport Accident Commission chief executiveTraceySlattersaidlocalcouncilsplay a “crucial” role in identifying their region’s road safety needs.

“... This program will allow us to work together with councils to design and build safer roads for their communities,” she said.

A Safer Local Roads and Streets reference group will also be established to support the development of the planning framework, investment guidelines, tools and resources that will support councils.

Achieve your perfect smile with KND Denture Clinic

KND Denture Clinic is a family-owned business that has been operating for nearly 30 years in the St Albans area.

Prosthetist Sam Robertson is part of a dedicated team who pride themselves on producing the highest results and patient satisfaction by working with patients to create the smile that they have always wanted.

He wants to drive home the message of focussing on the importance of retaining all your teeth.

“Some people might think that missing one or two teeth isn’t too bad, but it can have a real detrimental effect on surrounding teeth and the dimensions on the face,” he said.

He encourages people to take notice of any feelings of discomfort in the mouth and to act on it as soon as possible.

“Prevention is always better than cure. Most issues can be easily treated and we welcome people to give our clinic a call to make an appointment to see a clinician where a treatment plan can be created and make sure it is specific to the patient, as there is no one size fits all approach. There is no requirement to have a referral to see a clinician,” he said.

The team can create full dentures to replace the loss of natural teeth in either upper or lower jaw, or even both. Each denture is custom made to create a natural appearance.

The team are also able to custom fit sports mouthguards for those playing competitive

sport, allowing them to breathe easier and have a comfortable fit.

KNDDentureClinicacceptsallgovernment formsincludingVeteranAffairsandVictorian Denture Scheme, as well as all types of private health insurance, with Hi-Caps facilities on

location. KND Denture Clinic St Albans is located at 192 Main Road East, St Albans. The Caroline Springs clinic can be found at suite 8, 242 Caroline Springs Boulevard. Operating hours are Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm.

West cheers on its heroes

Like the rest of the country, the western suburbs came to a stand-still on Wednesday night last week for Australia’s FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final against England.

A crowd of more than 1500 people – most of them clad in green and gold and barracking for the Matildas – packed a live site set up at Werribee’s Wyndham Park, while elsewhere, pubs, clubs and loungerooms were filled to capacity too. Many of them emptied before the finish though, as two late goals sent England to Sunday’s final; the euphoria of Sam Kerr’s second half screamer proving short lived. The legacy of this tournament certainly won’t.

Pipeworks set for an exciting future in Thomastown

Pipeworks Market has settled into its new home in Thomastown, and manager Peter Dimarelos said there is more to come for the iconic northern suburbs landmark.

First established in 1987, the Pipeworks Market was originally based in Campbellfield and quickly became the heart of the northern suburbs community.

The market closed in 2013 but is back and bigger than ever at its new location at 5 Dunstans Court, Thomastown.

The red carpet was rolled out on June 17 for the reopening of the market, a day that was jam packed with retailers and entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

Mr Dimarelos said the day brought the community together once again.

“The reopening was amazing, we managed to have a big crowd come through and enjoy all the things our market has to offer, from entertainment, activities and fresh produce,” he said.

“Everyone was just happy to be there, it was great.”

The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 4pm and stretches across an expansive 9000-square-metre space, with hundreds of diverse stalls and thousands of parking spaces.

MrDimarelossaidthemarketiscontinuing to grow week on week as it strives to deliver for the community.

“We really want people to come out and have a look at our new site. It is still a work in progress but we are here for the long run. Our attitude is to grow and make the market bigger and better every chance we get,” he said.

“The goal is to give value to people coming and to give families something to do on their weekends.

“There is definitely a nostalgia for the

old market and the community has come back together because of it. There are lots of familiar faces but also lots of new faces.

Honda ZR-V VTi X $40,200

Honda ZR-V VTi L $43,200

Honda ZR-V VTi LX $48,500

Honda ZR-V e:HEV LX $54,900

Honda ZR-V VTi L 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder petrol, CVT automatic, FWD

Note: These prices are drive-away.

Honda sets out its SUV future

Honda has shown its hand for the future with a deft shuffle of its SUVs, including the addition of a new model, the ZR-V, slotting in between the present HR-V and CR-V.

While the newcomer is different, it does go somewhat to cramping the style of its older siblings. However, Honda assures us that the coming of the all-new CR-V in 2024, as a bigger, more spacious model than at present, will resolve the situation.

“The Honda ZR-V is Honda Australia’s first, brand-new core model to be introduced in Australia in 20 years and uses an enhanced version of Honda’s global architecture,” said Honda Australia director Carolyn McMahon.

The Civic-based ZR-V comes in three petrol-only grades and a range-topping petrol / electric hybrid. Prices start at $40,200 for the VTi X with the hybrid e:HEV LX costing $54,900.OntestwastheZR-VVTiLat$43,200. All prices are drive-away.

Standard equipment on the base model includes premium cloth upholstery, a 9-inch infotainment touch-screen, eight-speaker sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, eight-speaker sound system, 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 11 airbags, 17-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers and parking sensors front and back.

In contrast, the VTi L takes on leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, 18-inch alloys, heated door mirrors, hands-free power tailgate, rear privacy glass, combination LED tail-lights and metal paddle shifts.

All ZR-Vs come under Honda’s five-year

unlimited kilometre warranty, with 24/7 roadside assist. Service intervals are 12 months or 10,000 kilometres and capped at $199 per visit.

Styling

At a tad over four-and-a-half metres long, the ZR-V is knocking on the mid-size SUV door. With a forceful front, the radiator grille shows off why black is the new chrome, cropping up in all classes of automobile, from bargain basement compacts to high-end aristocrats and anything in between – a ZR-V, for example.

By contrast, the headlamps flanking the front each share a home with daytime running lights and dynamic direction indicators under a single sleek clear plastic ‘roof’.

In profile the SUV is neither too tall nor too small – a genuine design Goldilocks – and leads to a rear as neat and tidy as a tucked-in shirt. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are a step up from the entry-level 17s.

Interior

Seatingisfirmandcouldgiverisetocomplaints on long journeys. Head and legroom are excellent. However, in the back the high-set floor leaves little room for toes under the front seats.

Out back there’s also a fold-down armrest with cup holders, double USB-C charge points and bottle nest. ISOFIX points are fixed for the outboard edges of the rear bench.

Access to the 380 litres of boot space comes via a power tailgate operated from an external switch, or with a gentle ‘kick’, Sam Kerr-style, to the rear bumper. Fold the 60 / 40 seat backs and 1312 litres becomes available.

The under-floor comes in two parts and can be used to separate cargo. There’s room only for a space saver spare wheel.

Honda has hooked in to the floating centre console with decent-size cubby below.

Deep cup holders are situated ahead of the gearshift switch. Door slots will take 700 ml bottles.

Infotainment

A 9.0-inch touchscreen is small by present-day standards but is home to a simple menu layout for wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, eight speaker sound system.

The 10.2-inch digital information cluster screen displays a good amount of driver information. Up front are USB-A and USB-C, in the rear two USB-C points.

Engines / transmissions

The Honda ZR-V VTi L relies on a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated with a CVT automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

Maximumpowerof131kWcomesupat6000 rpm; top torque of 240 Nm between 1700 and 4500 rpm, making for flexible performance from go to whoa.

Safety

The Honda ZR-V leads the class in passive safety with 11 airbags, including a front-centre and driver’s knee airbag.

Active safety includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, driver attention monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic jam assist, traffic sign

recognition, front and rear parking sensors, plus tyre pressure monitoring.

Driving

With 240 Nm of torque on tap from a low 1700 revs well managed by the CVT tuning, the ZR-V pulls away with little fuss. Acceleration into a motorway stream of traffic is likewise. Engine, wind and road noise are all-but absent, except in the last case on course surfaces. Ride and handling are competent thanks to a well-tuned suspension. Town work on test was as expected for a light vehicle, while body roll on fast bends was minimised and road blemishes ironed out with ease.

As a performer, of the three drive modes, Normal is, well normal, for day-to-day city traffic, while Eco saves fuel but obviously dumbs down the driving experience. Sport makes the best of the turbo for a taut response to right-foot input. Honda puts a combined urban / highway fuel consumption of 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the ZV-R petrol vehicle. On test the VTi L came up with 9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and as low as 5 litres per 100 kilometres on the open road.

Driver’s view all round is mostly good but is let down by limited rear-window glass. There’s a neat lock-as-you-walk-away form the vehicle when you have your hands full.

Summary

As a long-time possessor of a self-propelled Honda lawnmower and large house block I have been pleasantly surprised with the machine’sperformanceandreliability.Itmakes me wonder if the same could be applied to the company’s new SUV down the track.

Finals drought ends for Albion Cats

Albion is on its way to its first finals series since 2011 in the Western Region Football League.

The Cats who sit in second spot within division 2 have had a strong season under new coach Blake Richards, who was still playing at the club the last time they participated in the finals.

“We’ve had a pretty good playing list with some serious depth,” Richards said.

“We’ve been able to combat any injuries throughout the year and players have reacted to the different level of training, and they really care about the footy club and they care for each other and results have gone that way.”

Two of the club’s young guns who have helped them soar back into the top four include Darcy McPherson and Benjamin Doll.

McPherson has been named in the best players every game he has played this season, to go with 27 goals for the year.

Doll is the league’s leading goal scorer with

36 majors from his 11 outings.

“(McPherson) is probably the opposition’s biggest focus, he gets hit very hard every week and the kid just continues to get up, get up and get up,” Richards said.

“His effort and loyalty to the jumper is next level. He trains really hard, he prepares correctly. He’s a ripper.

“(Doll) is an extremely talented footballer, he reads the ball incredibly well, he’s hard to play on,verycraftyaroundthegoal, makesthemost of his opportunities.

“The best part about those two boys is they’re Albion juniors and they’re very young, only 22, 23, so they’ve got some good footy ahead of them.”

Withthebyetheweekbeforefinals,Richards said he was thankful their win against North Footscray last round was a tough game to prepare for what is ahead of them.

“I think if it had been the other way and

we beat them by a big margin, we might have brought some bad habits into the finals,” he said.

“We’re still going to train pretty hard this week, get the legs ticking over to gain a bit of fitness but still manage our injured players as well.

“And the chance to have two weeks to plan for one week, which is going to give me some more time to get everything correct.”

With Parkside set to face the Cats in a semi final on the weekend, Richards said if his side brings their intensity and effort they can match it with anyone. The winner will be straight into the grand final and the loser will play in a preliminary final.

“It’s about coming with the right mindset and getting everyone right at the right time, which looks like it’s happening.”

Bulldogs ready to bite in AFLW

With the AFLW season quickly approaching it’s time to check in on how the Western Bulldogs are approaching the year. Harper Sercombe chatted with Gemma Lagioia from the Bulldogs to hear her thoughts on the pre-season and what to expect from the Dogs in season eight of the AFLW.

Western Bulldogs young gun Gemma Lagioiaisreadytotakehergametothe next level as the Bulldogs set their eyes on season eight of the AFLW

After spending her first three years within the AFLW system as an outside midfielder, Lagioia has been setting herself up for a season kicking goals.

“I’ll spend some more time in the forward line for sure,“ she said. “That’s where I’ve been training in the pre-season, so I think that’ll be my main position.

“Kate McCarthy is the new forwards coach so it’s been great working with her and she was a small forward as well, so learning off her has been really good.”

With the season just around the corner, Lagioia said her focus is to play some more consistent footy to help her team stay within the top eight.

Lagioia played four games in AFLW season sevenaftersixgamesinthefirstseasonin2022.

“As a team we just want to improve on how we went last year,” she said.

“We think we can win the whole thing, that’s our aim.

“We just want to play some really good exciting footy and just do as well as we can.”

Already written in Bulldogs folk law as the three time All-Australian and four time best andfairestwinnerissettoembarkonherfourth year as stand alone captain, Ellie Blackburn will be instrumental in returning her side back to the premiership successes of 2018.

“She’s amazing. She’s the best captain I’ve played under and I look up to Ellie so much,” Lagioia said.

“She’s had a great pre-season, there’s no doubt she’ll go into the season and just play the exact same as she has in the previous five seasons, if not even better.

“I’ve just learnt so much off of her, I’m really appreciative of playing under her.”

The Dogs added some depth and experience to their list in the off season through Maggie GorhamfromGreaterWesternSydney,Brianna McFarlanefromtheBrisbaneLionsandmature aged draftee Dominique Carruthers.

“All three of them have fit in so well and all of them have made quite big moves down here, and they just fit in with the girls so well, they add so much to the group and I’ve really been enjoying getting to know them,” Lagioia said.

Along with the fresh recruits there has been plenty of progress made at the kennel throughout the preseason.

Midfielder turned key forward Gabrielle Newton and winger Aurora Smith, who is

comingoffanACLinjuryfromseasonsix,have particularly caught Lagioia’s eye.

“(Newton), in the forward line, I’ve been able to play pretty close to her all pre-season, I think she’ll be great and kick goals every game hopefully,” she said.

“(Smith) has been able to have a pretty full pre-season, so I’m looking forward to seeing how she goes.

“I think everyone has taken really big steps this pre-season, we’ve all been working really hard, so I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone goes.”

The Dogs moved back into their traditional home of Whitten Oval during the off season following ongoing works to the ground and facilities.

“That’s been really good, the girls have been loving it,” Lagioia said.

The Bulldogs had their first hit out against Hawthorn in mid August in a pre-season match.

The Dogs won and Lagioia impressed in her new position kicking one of the Dogs’ five goals, although the focus was playing the way the team wanted to play.

“Our focus has been on working really hard defensively… we just want to get our game plan right and do what we want to do, as opposed to

focusing too much on the opposition,” Lagioia said.

The Dogs were to face last year’s preliminary finalists North Melbourne in their last game before the season begins on Saturday, after deadline.

They start their season on September 2 with a clash against Geelong.

The Bulldogs are looking to improve on last season when they finished in seventh spot, six points outside the top six.

“I’m so looking forward to round one, Geelong in Geelong, I’m really looking forward to that,” Lagioia said.

“Looking more into the future, we’re so excited about our first game at Whitten Oval in round five.

“There’s just so many points along the way that I’m excited for.”

The Dogs will play the Saints under lights in their return to Whitten Oval on Friday, September 29.

Relief for Eagles women as promotion secured

Keilor Park women’s team is heading into the Victorian Premier League for season 2024.

The Eagles have guaranteed themselves a promotion with two rounds remaining in the FV State League 1 competition.

While the promotion is secured, the Eagles sit only two points behind table leaders Bundoora, which sets up a nail biting finish to the championship race.

Led by head coach Sam Pirruccio alongside co-captains Carla Pelligra and Emily Stipic the team has only conceded one game for the entire season. Which came in a 2-0 loss to Bundoora back in round two.

Pelligra said the promotion is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication.

“Not only this year but years prior to get to where we are today,” she said.

“It’s so rewarding to see all the hard work pay off and I’m so proud of all the girls.

“Keilor Park as a club have also worked hard behind the scenes to support our women’s teams at the club and it’s great to see this hard work come to fruition.

“We’re all really looking forward to the coming years, to keep progressing our skills

and showcasing our talents to the leagues.”

“At the start of the year, I knew we had a special team who would do great things. I am beyond proud of all the women who play in the seniors and reserve team, the girls are so talented and deserve to be rewarded with this amazing opportunity,“ Stipic said.

The Eagles have been a scoring powerhouse throughout the season bolstering a goal difference of 51 thanks to the 68 goals they have scored throughout the season.

This scoring attack has been led by Sarah Dewitt and Khiana Shervey who have 21 and 18 goals respectively.

Via social media the club expressed its support for the team’s achievements.

“This year marks an extraordinary milestone for our talented ladies who have poured their hearts and sweat into achieving this remarkable feat,” the club said.

“Their dedication, perseverance, and hard workhavepaidoff, andwecouldn’tbeprouder of their incredible journey.

“Aswebaskinthegloryofthisachievement, we’reremindedoftheinspiringspectacleofthe FIFA World Cup, which has only fuelled the

flames of passion for soccer within our female program. “The global stage has showcased the power of women in soccer, and we’re committed to nurturing and empowering our players to reach new heights as well.”

Impey’s tough decision

A career in sport has always been on the cards for Lucas Impey, the hard decision is just which one.

Coming from an elite basketball pedigree withhismotherJodiplayingmorethan300Big V games and his father Christian playing high school basketball in America and has coached for more than 20 years, Impey was aways going to step on the basketball court.

“They pushed me really hard to play basketball but they were always open to me playing two sports,” he said.

“They back me 100 per cent, and that’s something I really appreciate, having them in my corner.”

Impey was on track to follow in their footsteps, having made every state team from under-16s to under-20s. However, a call from the Western Jets in the Coates Talent League asking him to attend a pre-season training threw a spanner into the works.

“I said, yeah why not? I’d put footy on the back burner for four years or so, I missed it,” he said.

“I came down for a run and I really loved it, ended up doing the pre-season and starting the season.

“I haven’t looked back since, I’ve played a couple of games of basketball but footy’s been the priority this year.

“I found a new love for footy and now that I’ve been away from basketball every time I’ve got to come back, I’ve really enjoyed it.

“Honestly, I think I really needed to change, it’s been good, it’s been an eye opener.”

While a decision between the two sports will have to be made in the future, Impey is in no rush to disturb what he has going at the moment.

Impey has been a ruck sensation since joining the Jets program, averaging 24 hit outs from his seven outings. He said a lot of credit has to go to his coaches who have instilled their confidence in the raw talent.

“They’ve backed me 100 per cent that I’m going to win every contest and it just drives me to want to play really well every game,” he said.

“My local coaches down at Darley have definitely helped me a lot, they’ve given me a lot of confidence to go out there and just try new things.

“They don’t care if I make mistakes, so it’s really the coaches pushing me to be better.”

Although, the transition into footy wasn’t as easy as Impey has made it seem with doubts creeping in at the start of pre-season.

“I was just really rusty, and I thought I didn’t really fit in,” he said.

“Once I kept going back to footy and everyone started to kind of get to know me a little bit, there were no doubts whatsoever that I made a good decision.”

With a decision on his sporting career still pending, Impey isn’t looking too far ahead in terms of career aspirations.

“Whichever sport I do pick, I’m going to try and go as far as I can.”

Sunshine YCW has announced the signing of Amitoj Kang for the upcoming Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 season. Kang, who plays for Sunshine Football Club which shares the same facilities, joins the club from division 1 side Sunshine. He is a wicketkeeperbatsman with a high score of 77 and a high number of dismissals as a wicketkeeper. He played a mixture of first and second XI cricket last season.

Burnside Heights is after a new women’s coach for next year’s Essendon District Football League women’s season. Jeff Stevens, who has coached the side for the last five seasons, stepped down after the side’s division 1 preliminary final loss.

President Justin Peagram said Stevens leaves the role on a good note. “After five years he thinks he has done as much as he can,” he said. “He thinks they need a change of voice.

The Lions ready for semi final against Oak Park

There is no ceiling on what Taylors Lakes can achieve this Essendon District Football League division 2 season.

The Lions had sealed up a top two spot a couple of weeks ago and have been preparing for a semi final clash with Oak Park since.

Lions coach Steve Burns said for the group being in finals was only the start of what they wanted to achieve.

“We’reinfinalstowinit,”hesaid.“Whatever we do now is a bonus.

“What we set out to do was to play finals and we ticked that box. Then we wanted to finish top two and we ticked that box.

“We haven’t set a ceiling on what we can achieve. We’ll see how we go in the semi final and we will be better for it in the second final we play.

“Hopefully we can go all the way.”

Burns said having locked in their place a few weeks ago, they had been able to work on some certain things, while managing the players.

He said before Saturday’s game the group had continued to gel as the season goes and that if they had no injuries they should go in at almost full strength.

“We’ve managed them to make sure they’re right for the final,” he said. “Like every term we have three or four players gone for the season, which is disappointing for those boys.

“If we haven’t had any new injuries we will go in full strength.”

For the club, it’s the seniors first finals appearance since 2013. Burns said it was reward for all the work that had been put in.

“Thecommitteeandthefootballdepartment have been amazing and given me everything that we need,” he said.

“The volunteers around the club have done a fantastic job as well.”

The Lions finished the regular season on Saturday against East Sunbury, winning 26.16 (172)-4.5 (29).

The Lions shared the goals around with 15 players hitting the scoreboard. Ethan Caffari

was named their best.

Burns said they were looking forward to the challenge of facing Oak Park this week with a spot in the grand final on the line.

“We still feel like we have another level to go to be able to beat Oak Park, Northern Saints and whoever makes finals [the Sunbury Kangaroos].

“We have a young group and have beaten everyone below us twice except the Northern Saints,

“We‘ve taken on every challenge except against the top two, there’s another level to go.”

In division 1, St Albans beat Hillside, while Deer Park lost to Rupertswood. Those match ups will again be played in the first week of finals.

Keilor Park beat Westmeadows to seal its spot in division 1, while Keilor had a massive win against Avondale Heights in premier division.

Lakers upset by Warriors

Hoppers Crossing got just its second win in the Western Region Football League division 1 season, upsetting finals hopeful Caroline Springs.

The Warriors started the game on top, keeping the Lakers goalless in the first quarter.

The Lakers began to work their way back into the game in the out scoring the Warriors, four goals to one.

The Warriors proved they were up for the fight taking back the lead for the three quarter time break.

Inaccuracy cost the Lakers in the last quarter. While they had eight scoring shots for the quarter, they were able to kick just two goals.

It would prove costly, with the Warriors winning 8.11 (59)- 7.15 (57).

William Young was awarded as the Lakers’ best on ground, with Ryan Allan kicking three goals.

The Lakers remain in fifth spot, but are now a game outside the top four.

In division 2, Sunshine crushed the second bottom team North Footscray to lock in a finals spot.

Teen’s Asia Cup dream

The hard work and hours of travel have paid off for rising Woodend basketball star Cooper Duff-Tytler.

Having not been in the state program at the start of last year, Duff-Tytler was last week named in the Australian under-16 team to play in the FIBA Asia Cup.

The achievement is not one lost on the teenager.

“It means a lot,” he said. “I always dreamt of playing for Australia and it’s a reward for all the effort.

“I was shocked and it’s really exciting.”

Duff-Tytler was among 30 players that were invited up to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra in the lead up to the squad being picked.

The players were picked on their performances at state level, with the final Australian team selected from there.

“Whoever played well they were selected,” he said. “We trained up there for a couple of days.”

The Asia Championships will see the Crocs

face the likes of Japan, China and New Zealand at the tournament next month.

Duff-Tytler said he was looking forward to the challenge.

“It will be really quick and physical,” he said.

“I’ve really improved leaps and bounds the last couple of years.

“I’ve put a lot more time into it with extra training.”

Having started his career at the Macedon Ranges Basketball Association, Duff-Tytler was soon playing with the Sunbury Jets.

This year he joined Keilor Thunder and is part of its Victorian Junior Basketball League Victorian championship team which is on track to making finals.

Duff-Tytler said he was enjoying his time at theThunderandsaidhehadareallygoodcoach. He said he was unsure how much of finals he would play with the national team duties.

Duff-Tytler’sKeilorteammateSaPilimaihas also been named in the Australian under-16 team.

There’s been plenty of travel for Duff-Tytler, who goes to school in PEGS in Essendon, for his sporting loves.

While Duff-Tytler is excelling on the basketball court, he isn’t 100 per cent sure that is where his sporting future lies.

As well as being a talented basketballer, he’s a budding football star as well. He was part of the Vic Country under-16 team at the national championships earlier this year.

“I’mstillenjoyingbothfootyandbasketball,” Duff-Tytler said. “I’ll see where they take me.

“The footy championships we went to the Gold Coast for the champs and won the championship which was good.

“I played all right in the first game. It was a good experience.”

Duff-TytlerispartoftheCalderCannonsand has been training with their under-18 squad.

For now though the focus is on basketball.

“I’ll put footy aside at the moment to train for Doha,” he said. “I’ll put in as much time as possible to make sure that I’m ready.”

It was a goal fest for the Kangaroos with five players kicking three or more majors. Charly Williams led the way with a six goal haul.

Stuart Purves was best on ground with his three majors in the 24.21 (165)- 7.6 (48) win.

Last placed Braybrook were smashed in its final game for the season.

The Brookers were 142 point losers in the 22.21 (153)-1.3 (9) clash with Wyndhamvale.

Albion had a bye before their finals series begins with a game against Parkside to come.

In division 3, a top two clash did not live up to the hype with second placed Albanvale losing to the Suns by 91 points.

The Cobras will face the Suns again in the first week of finals and will hope to improve on the 23.15 (153)- 9.8 (62) loss.

Sunshine Heights had a big win against local rivals North Sunshine.

The Dragons won 23.13 (151)- 10.10 (70), with Giovanni Raffaele booting seven of their 23 goals.
