Bus crash dance gala
By Liam McNally
More than a dozen dance schools from across the west are coming together for a charity gala to raise money for Exford Primary School.
Melton’s Galactic Dance and Events owner and teacher Andrew Micallef was inspired to organise the Exford Primary Charity Gala after having students and family members connected to the May 16 school bus collision on Exford Road.
“Walking into the studio and having so many families affected completely broke my heart,” he said.
“I’m really trying to let these poor families knowthattheperformingartsarebehindthem and doing what we can to help them out.
“This is a cause that we need to get behind and we hope the whole community can as well … It’s a lifetime thing for these kids so we’re hoping to make this a yearly occasion.”
Mr Micallef said this is the first time any of these schools will perform together in a non-competitive environment.
“There’s never been anything like it in the western suburbs … The variety of performances, music, the high energy – it’ll be quite a spectacle,” he said.
“The fact that the dance community has come together for this cause is really inspiring … When it comes to these kinds of events everyone wants to put their best foot forward so that’s exactly what we’re going to get.”
Exford Primary school captain Lily and has been a student at Galactic Dance since she was three years old. She said it’s incredible how much support the school has received from different communities.
“It is even more special knowing that the fundraiser organised by Drew and Galactic and the other dance studios will not only provide support to the school but also a chance to entertain our community,” she said.
“Although I wasn’t affected physically by the crash, it was very heart-breaking and
overwhelming, knowing that my friends and classmates, including two of my fellow school captains were hurt.
“Ilookforwardtodancinginthecharitygala along with the other studios and helping to support my school community.”
The gala will include performances by
comedian Jordan Barr, Paul Rizzo as Michael Jackson, Enya Angel and the Robert Sturrock Dancers, Western Ballet Project, Flash Dance Performing Arts Studio, Dance Effects, Phoenix Dance Company, The Dance Centre, The Edge, Dream Entertainment Studios, Instyle Dance Company, The Dance Room,
Energy Dance Co, Eynesbury Dance Scene, Millennium Dance Concepts and Galactic Dance and Events.
The Exford Primary Charity Gala will take place on August 20 from 6pm at the Quin Auditorium in Braybrook. Details: https:// www.trybooking.com/CKARE

Council backs bridge proposal
By Liam McNally
Melton council has offered to support Diggers Rest residents’ preferred option for the new bridgethatwillreplacethelevelcrossingonthe Old Calder Highway.
At a Diggers Rest community meeting on July 12, about 80 Diggers Rest residents voted ontheirownpreferredplacementofthebridge, and selected a path south of the train station thatincludedabypassroadconnectingtheOld Calder Highway to Plumpton Road.
The suggested bypass was sent to the Level Crossing Removal Project team through
Engage Vic, which was taking community submissions until July 18.
The plan drafted by community members is similar to a bypass Melton council committed to advocating for the state government to fund in 2014 following a Diggers Rest local area traffic management review.
DiggersRestresidentDavidO’Connorraised the suggestion at a council meeting on July 31 .

Celebrating a free India
The Indian Senior Citizens Association of Fraser Rise is offering the Melton community a taste of a true Indian celebration with an Independence Day celebration at the Fraser Rise Community Centre on August 12.
From 6.30pm, the free event hosted by Hitanshu Gaur will offer singers, dance performers, games for kids and adults, a quiz and food stalls.
Independence Day celebrates the anniversary of India gaining independence from England on August 15, 1947.
Indian Senior Citizens Association presidentAnilPurisaidhelovesAustraliaand all it has offered him, but a part of his heart misses India and all of its celebrations.
“The event is called Vande Mataram which means ‘I praise you, my mother’. In India we consider our country our mother and no matter where we live the love never fades and we would always want to remember the
sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and celebrate being free,” he said.
“I lost my grandfather in the fight for freedom too … Independence Day celebration is a key reminder for all Indians to reflect back on what we lost in our journey to get freedom and express gratitude for every breath we take.”
Mr Puri said he is hopeful kids will see the event, and it might act as a conversation starter among their families to learn about Indian independence.
“I am very excited about the event … being able to bring the community together to celebrate something very important to my generation and pass that on to a new generation is very special.
“Lastly,Indiansareallaboutfoodandmusic and I am very excited to see the community coming together and eat, dance together and make new friends.”
funding and possibly some developer funding as a part of the Calder Highway level crossing removal at Diggers Rest?” he said.
Melton city futures director Sam Romaszko said council will continue to pursue all available state funding and any applicable developer funding to support infrastructure improvements in the Diggers Rest area.
“In particular, council will continue to advocate to the state government for the best possible outcome for our Diggers Rest community as a part of the Calder Highway Level Crossing Removal Project,” she said.
The creation of a preferred route by Diggers
Rest residents was prompted by concerns the state government will select a path for the bridge that may require certain properties be targeted for compulsory acquisition.
The state government confirmed in July designs are yet to be finalised, but some land outside the rail corridor may be required.
The project team received more than 100 separate submissions from locals through Engage Vic surveys during community consultation before the cut-off of July 18. A state government spokesperson said the team will continue to consult the community as the project progresses.

Road planning delay ‘frustrating’
By Liam McNally
Moorabool mayor Rod Ward has expressed frustration at the state government over “continued delays” in announcing the preferred route for the Eastern Link Road in Bacchus Marsh.
Work on the Bacchus Marsh Eastern Link Road planning study started in May 2017. The road, if built, would divert heavy vehicles and through-traffic from the centre of town to ease congestion and improve safety.
The state government was due to announce
a preferred option in early 2023 but this has not yet been released.
Cr Ward said the delays were becoming “more and more frustrating”.
“Council first identified the need for an eastern link in the late 1990s,” he said.
“Following the decision by the state government not to proceed with the proposed Woolpack Road option in 2010, the residents of Bacchus Marsh have been waiting patiently for an alternate route to be identified.
“Regional Roads Victoria have done planning studies and identified options but
nothing has been announced.”
When council first proposed the need for an alternative route through Bacchus Marsh, it was hoping to remove large trucks from the town centre, reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety including on The Avenue and the Western Highway, improve access for visitors and connect with a future arterial road network.
Cr Ward said with Bacchus Marsh growing so rapidly, all these reasons were still valid, but were now amplified as traffic in the town is “busier than ever”.
“We’re calling on Regional Roads Victoria
to release the preferred route, which should have happened months ago, so we can get closer to actually making the eastern link a reality,” he said.
A Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson said the government is completing a range of complex studies as planning for the Bacchus Marsh Eastern Link Road continues.
“These studies are helping to determine a preferred alignment for a proposed eastern link, which we look forward to sharing with the community in the near future,” the spokesperson said.

Government denies rail axing
By Cade Lucas
The state government has denied reports that it has axed proposed rail lines to Melton and Wyndham Vale.
Reports last week claimed internal government documents released through freedom of information showed the Western Rail Plan, which involved new electrified train lines to Melton and Wyndham Vale, had been shelved.
Speaking outside state Parliament on Wednesday, Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan said the reports were wrong.
“Lets be clear, those reports and that characterisation are incorrect, ” Ms Allan said.
“Those documents that are referred to are internal working documents and do not reflect any government decision.”
Ms Allan touted existing projects such as the Metro Tunnel, level crossing removals and track duplications as already benefitting commuters in the west.
When asked if lines to Wyndham Vale and Melton,whicharecurrentlyservicedbyV/Line, would be electrified, she said it was important to complete projects in sequence.

Capturing Country spirit
Wadawurrung Traditional Owner and visual artist Jenna Oldaker has unveiled a new artwork that acknowledges and celebrates Eynesbury’s Traditional Owners.
The work, titled Murrup Dja (Spirit Country), is hanging in the Eynesbury Discovery Centre for public viewing during opening hours.
Oldaker said the artwork is a celebration of community and Country.
“Our ancestors and Elders travelled these lands sharing their culture, their stories and knowledge, and it is now our responsibility to take care of our Wadawurrung Country home,” she said.
The piece uses traditional symbols to tell the story of Wadawurrung Country with an emphasis on the Eynesbury area including symbols for the Eynesbury Grey Box Forest and animals that live there, strips of blue representing waterways including
Peter Rabbit
the Grey Box Forest waterfall, shapes that indicate meeting places and elders and arches to symbolise mountains and nearby scar trees.
“The artwork I created encompasses many traditional shapes and symbols for people, animals, places and landforms in the area, like the waterways and the Grey Box Forest, and the journey they have been on,” she said.
“Aswehavecaredforthislandforthousands of years, the Country has reciprocated and cared for us providing healthy and nourished land and water, allowing us to create new life and spirit.”
The artwork is also accompanied by a detailed timeline of the history of the Eynesbury area.
The Eynesbury Discovery Centre is located at 479 Eynesbury Road, Eynesbury and is open seven days a week from 11am – 5pm.
comes before it and that’s what we’ve said all the way along.”
Melton mayor Lara Carli said council was awaiting confirmation from the state government about the future of the Western Rail Plan.
“ … But we remain hopeful the Victorian government will meet their commitments to deliver electrification and duplication of the Melton Line,” she said. “Electrification to the Meltonlinewillhavesomeincreaseincapacity. However, without duplication, there will not be increase in frequency and won’t meet the demands of our fast growing communities.
“Without duplication and improved frequency from electrification, trains will be arriving from Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh at our stations with no standing room meaning passengers from Melton to Caroline Springs will be left at the station.
Speculation about the Western Rail Plan’s future intensified following the state budget, wherenomoneywasallocatedforGeelongFast Rail, a project the government repeatedly said needed to be built first.
A government spokesman said Geelong Fast Rail was subject to the federal government’s infrastructure review.

The Venue is cheap and cheerful
By Chris Riley, Marquee Motoring
Today we’re looking at the cheapest of the cheap, the bottom feeders of the Australian new car market.
They’re cars offered at a rock bottom price, targeted at those who can’t afford anything else, but are still prepared to dig deep to get something new rather than second hand.
Wearing the crown as the cheapest new car currently available is the Kia Picanto hatch, priced from $16,290 plus on-roads. Cheapest SUV is the Suzuki Ignis at $19,490.
With no equivalent to match Picanto, Hyundai’s cheapest offering these days is the equally cheap and cheerful Venue, a smaller than small SUV priced from $22,000 plus on-roads.
It’s a rather boxy, odd-looking five-seater that’s just been updated, with comfort, convenience and connectivity upgrades across the three-grades, including Qi wireless charging which is now standard.
Styling
Venue aspires to be fun and funky like a lot of tiddlers. But it’s more fugly than funky, with its weird-looking front and over and under lights.
It looks okay up close, but not so good from a distance. Hopefully, this faux pas will be addressed at some stage.
The front-wheel drive Venue comes with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, the latter adding $2000 to the price.
It is followed by the better equipped Active at $26,250 and range-topping Elite at $28,750, both of which come with an auto as standard.
A contrasting roof in black or white is a no-cost option, while mica/metallic paint is an extra $595.
Butifyouwanttheroof,youhavetoforgothe sunroof (not sure why).
Standard kit includes cloth trim and manual air conditioning, with contrasting stitching and piping for the seats, steering wheel and gear shift boot, along with silver surrounds for the air vents and transmission lever.
There’s also alloys, a touchscreen, cruise control, power windows, auto headlights, auto high beam, daytime running lights, one-touch turn signals and an auto reverse wiper for the back window.
Venue rides on 15-inch alloys, while Active and Elite step up to 17s -- all come with a space saver spare.
Elite adds a sunroof, climate air, combo cloth and artificial leather seat trim, rear privacy glass, LED tail and daytime running lights, auto-dimming mirror and rear parking sensors.
Venue is covered by a 5-year unlimited kilometre warranty, with 12-month roadside assistance which extends with each service, provided it is with Hyundai.
Service intervals are pegged at 12 months/15,000km and lifetime capped price servicing is available.
Infotainment
Infotainment consists of an 8.0-inch touchscreen, with a system that features Bluetooth with audio streaming, AM/FM radio, four-speaker audio, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone connectivity.
Qi wireless charging is standard on all variants and there are also USB-A and USB-C portsanda12-voltsocketinfront,withanother two USB-C charge ports in the back for Elite.
Elite also adds another two speakers, digital radio and built-in navigation, but reverts to wired CarPlay and Android Auto.
You also get Sounds of Nature, with six background soundtracks.
ThelatestupdateseestherolloutofHyundai’s Bluelink connected car services, which offers Automatic Collision Notification, Natural VoiceControlandsegment-firstremotevehicle control functionality via an app.
It’s free of charge for the first five years and transferrable if you sell the car within this period.
Engines / transmissions
Motivation comes from a non-turbo 1.6-litre petrol engine with old-time multi-point injection that produces 90kW of power at 6300 rpm and 151Nm of torque at 4850 rpm.
Drive is to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.
You can change gears manually using the transmission lever, but steering wheel change paddles are not provided.
Safety
Venue scores a four-star safety rating, with six airbags, a rear-view camera and autonomous emergency braking (City, Interurban and Vulnerable Road User).
There’s also a lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW)andemergencylanekeeping(ELK)and tyre pressure monitoring across the range.
Elite adds Blind spot alert and rear cross-traffic alert.
The car lost a star because of marginal performance in its ability to avoid a rear-end impact with vehicles in front.
Driving There are three drive modes from which to choose (Normal, Eco, Sport) plus a further three traction modes (Snow, Mud, Sand), both selected via a central rotary/push button knob.
But with a mere 170mm of ground clearance wewouldn’tbetakingitoffroadanytimesoon.
One of the big attractions of this car is ease of getting in and out, something that will be appreciated by older buyers.
Once inside it has stacks of headroom too,
even with a sunroof fitted.
Venue is simple to operate and super easy to drive which should also endear it to oldies.
The driver’s seat is height adjustable and the steering wheel is both reach and height adjustable.
Analogue dials have made way for a digital instrument cluster, with a small centre area that can be configured and choice of three colour schemes.
The 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine makes a fist of it, but with just 151Nm of torque, it’s never going to set the world on fire. Bear in mind,however,thatthecarweighsonly1200kg which partially compensates for this.
With another 20Nm of torque, the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo found in the Picanto might be a better choice?
This is offered with Kia’s slightly more expensive Stonic but it comes at a price.
At just over four metres in length, Venue shinesaroundtownwhereitiseasytodriveand park and the engine comes under no pressure.
Steering is sharp and light, and combined with compact dimensions, makes low speed manoeuvring a piece of cake.
While Venue can keep up with traffic on the motorway, it never really feels relaxed in this environment.
More surprisingly, however, was the way the transmission began hunting between gears.
This was in the 100-110km/h speed range withcruisecontrolengaged, whereitconstantly switched between gears on reasonably flat terrain.
The thing tends to become a bit breathless and lacks punch around 110km/h, making
Venue: $22,000 (manual), $24,000 (automatic)

overtaking problematic most of the time.
Gear hunting used to be a thing with four-speed autos when they ran out of options on hills, but never on the flat.
Ride quality is firmish, but not uncomfortable, thoughitcanbecomedrummy on coarse bitumen.
With a short wheelbase, speed humps are the enemy because the front doesn’t get time to settle before the rear wheels lift. One thing missing from the mix that we have come to appreciate in more recent times is adaptive cruise control.
The small boot hides a two-level floor, with 355 litres of cargo capacity.
With a 45-litre tank, Venue uses standard 91 unleaded with fuel consumption a claimed 7.2L/100km.
We were getting as low as 6.5L/100km but finished on 7.6L after more than 300km. The long-term average was showing at 7.0L/100km. That’s a good result considering the engine’s size and lack of sophistication, but it could be better.
Summing up
Venue is basically a good jigger (journo talk for okay). It represents a cheap and cheerful solutiontotransportifyou’renotinthemarket for something fancy.
The boxy design delivers a spacious cabin, with easy access, although rear legroom could be an issue, so be sure to try it on for size.
Importantly, it provides high levels of safety and doesn’t use much fuel unless you flog it -- but is best confined to city use rather than venturing out onto the open road.

Phoenix are ready to perform on the big stage
Melton Phoenix’s destiny in FV state league 5 west is in its own hands in the final three rounds.
The Phoenix sit in third spot, two points behind West Point and seven points behind Balmoral.
With West Point having a bye in the final three rounds and the Phoenix playing both the top teams in the run home, the fight for promotion is on.
Phoenix coach Darren Traynor said the top two teams will be promoted, while the team that finishes third will face a state league 4 team in a play off.
“We never do it easily at Maccy Park,” he said.
“We play Balmoral which is the top team on August 11 at home and then the last game we play West Point.
“It’s exciting to be at this point with three games remaining and playing two games against the top teams.
“There’s some big challenges and we’re looking forward to it.”
For the Phoenix it’s the second straight
season its promotion hopes have gone down to the final rounds.
Last season it finished second, only goal difference behind Barwon, but missed out on promotion with only one team going
up last season.
Traynor said that had made the group determined to seal promotion this season.
“It was a kick in the backside and we are hopefully going to turn that around this year,”
he said.
With a catch up round on the weekend, the Phoenix had the weekend off.
Traynor said he would have been happy to keep on playing with the side on a winning run.
“We are in some good form,” he said. “Since Balmoral the first round when we lost, we had had one draw and won the rest of our matches.
“But the whole league had the weekend off.”
Traynor said the playing group was feeling pretty positive heading into the last three rounds.
With the two games against the top two sides both at home, he said they were hoping to see a big crowd down at MacPherson Park.
“I really think it will be effort from the boys that will get us across the line,” he said. “We play two really good sides and we don’t take anything away from them.
“It’s a big challenge and something we are looking forward to as a team, as a club. Hopefully we’ll get the Nix family down there and bring our best.”

Bears ready to go again
By Tara Murray
Burnside Heights will come again after a heartbreaking semi final loss in the Essendon District Football League division 1 women’s competition.
The Bears seemed destined for the first grand final spot for much of the match against Greenvale, having taken a lead early on.
The Bears held strong as the Jets came hard in the second half and remained in front of most of the last quarter.
AfreekicktoTaliaMottaintheJetsforward line gave her the chance to win the game with four seconds to go.
Shedidexactlythatandcauseda3.6(24)-3.4 (22) loss for the Bears.
Bears president Justin Peagram said the girls were disappointed but were keen to make the most of their second chance in the preliminary final this Saturday.
“The girls were disappointed as they couldn’t hold on,” he said. “In the last quarter there were a few things which fortunately didn’t go our way.
“We got the double chance and we have
another crack at it next week and I think if we can get through next week we will come at them hard.
“They know they have their [Greenvale’s] measure, they just have to put it together.”
With the last two games between the two sides decided by less than two goals, the final was always set to be a close one.
Peagram said they were happy with the first half, but the third quarter proved to be the difference in the game.
“The third quarter led them down unfortunately,” he said. “The first quarter they came out firing, held on in the second quarter and the third quarter we just didn’t make the most of the opportunities.
“Then in the last quarter, Greenvale was always going to come home hard with the wind and down hill.
“We just couldn’t hold them.”
Peagram said the message from coach Jeff Stevens after the game was to make the most of opportunities when they arise.
“We had a couple of opportunities deep in the forward line [in the third quarter] but didn’t make the most of them,” he said.
“Jeff just instructed the girls that it was just that third quarter. It is close, you have to make the most of the opportunities and that was the message, when we get a chance you have to take them, it’s too close these heartbreakers.
“They earned the right for a double chance and they have the chance to exercise that next week.”
Peagram said Holly McGregor in the ruck, Payton-Ani Ozols, Ebony Stevens, Kayla Ravanello, Krissy Trang, Holly Taylor and Caitlin Murphy were the standouts for the side.
The Bears this week face the Essendon Doutta Stars in the preliminary final on Saturday afternoon at Monk Oval.
The Stars had a big win in their semi final against Gisborne.
“It will be a pretty tough ask as they are back to full strength [with Victorian Football League Women’s players] and we don’t have that luxury,” Peagram said.
“The girls will give a good count of themselves, they will want another crack at Greenvale so they will come out firing.”
Falcons lock in coaches
Caroline Springs has locked in its coaches for the upcoming Victorian Turf Cricket Association season.
The Falcons have new coaches for both their men’s and women’s sides, as they continue to build their program.
Shiran Rajakaruna has been appointed the men’s coach for the division 3 season.
“Arriving from Sub-District club Endeavour Hills, Shiran possesses a wealth of both playing and coaching experience that he is excited to share with our young playing group,” the club said on social media.
“Previously at Mulgrave CC, he is no stranger to the VTCA having coached at senior division club Deer Park as well as played at Williamstown CYMS.
“Approachable and knowledgeable, we cannot wait to see Shiran get the best out of our playing group and lead us to more success this summer.”
The Falcons finished in fifth last season in division 3, missing out on finals by six points. It was the Falcons first season in division 3.
The Falcons premiership winning women’s side will also have a new coach.
Gary Pretty has come on board to lead that side heading forward.
“Gary boasts an extensive cricket resume including being a first XI premiership-winning captain-coach at Rupertswood while also holding life member status at Sunbury United,” the club said.
“Having claimed our maiden senior women’s premiership last summer, Gary will build on the foundations set within our squad as we look to grow and take them to the next level.”

Tymms steps down as head coach of the Bloods
Melton coach Aaron Tymms will step down as coach at the end of the Ballarat Football League season.
While his side is on top of the ladder and aiming for a second straight premiership, Tymms decided now was the time to step back and let someone else take on the role.
“I’m hanging up the whiteboard and whistle,” he said. “I’ve been at the club seven years and six of them as head coach.
“I’m stepping away so they can learn from someone else. For a lot of the boys I’m the only senior coach they’ve had and if not [Brad] Murphy would be the only other coach.
“It’ll be good to learn from someone else. It could still be the same message, but a different voice.”
Tymms said when he went for the job originallyhedidn’tthinkhewouldgetthejob and was doing the interview for experience.
Since then the Bloods have been one of the top sides in the competition, making two grand finals and winning one of them, with two COVID-19 years in the middle.
Tymms said he was happy with how things had panned out.
“We’re in a strong position and I have confidence where the club is on and off the field,” he said.
“We’ve got three teams looking at finals this year. We’ve been strong each year and we’re around the mark this year.”
Tymms said he would look to spend more time with his family and help out with his son’s football next year.
He said he wouldn’t coach, but would step in where he was needed.
“My kids are 10 and 14, it’s time for their dad to be around a little bit more,” he said.
“It’ll be good to be around Tuesday and Thursday nights. I still enjoy Saturdays and
will likely go down to every home game, but I’m stepping back a little.
“I also have a Europe trip booked.”
Tymms said he doesn’t know what the future holds in terms of coaching, but didn’t rule out returning to it in the future.
“I started coaching as soon as I finished playing,” he said. “My wife reckons I won’t last five minutes without it.
“I might help someone.”
While Tymms has made a decision about his future, he is focused on helping the Bloods go back-to-back.
They sit on top of the ladder with three rounds to go.
“There are some really good sides at the top end,” he said. “It would be great to get the fairy tale ending but we knew what life is like.”
Thriller ends in a draw
By Tara Murray
The top of the table clash in the Ballarat Netball League between Darley and North Ballarat turned into a thriller, with the teams having to settle for a draw.
Last season’s two grand finalists have been the standouts this season, with the only defeat for either team coming in the first match up between the sides.
On Saturday, the Devils got out to an early lead, before North Ballarat took a one goal lead into quarter time.
Scores were level at half time and again at three quarter time. The two sides still couldn’t be split at the final siren, with the match finishing in a 51-all draw.
Devils coach Di McCormack said it was a really good game of netball.
“We got a good jump on them and led 6-1 before they fought back and it was a really good match from there.
“We started with Bec [Hicks] on the bench and gave Liv [Cawthray] the opportunity to start with Mon [Nagle] starting with her.
“After the first little bit it went well, there was a little bit of physicality and she stepped it up.”
McCormack continued to try things in her shooting end, with Hicks coming on at goal attack and Cawthray back at goal shooter.
She said at this point of the season it was the perfect opportunity to make sure they have all bases covered.
“They were different elements,” she said. “We wanted to see how it works.
“It wasn’t a knee jerk reaction, they were strategy for the next time we meet them.
“We haven’t had that luxury in a long time.”
Hicks shot 24 goals for the Devils, while Cawthray shot 23 goals.
McCormack said that midcourter Shannon Blackman was their best player having a fantastic game.
The Devils remain on top, four points clear of North Ballarat.
McCormack said they were confident of having a big finals series as they aim to go one better than last year.
“It feels like the year that Rupo [Rupertswood, where most of the team is from] won the grand final,” she said.
“There’s a really good vibe and the ability to come together under pressure.”
McCormack said while it would be nice to go through undefeated, the main focus for them was to have as many tools in the tool box as possible for finals.
The Devils face Melton South and Melton in the next two rounds, both which sit outside the top six.
They then finish the season against third placed Sunbury Lions. McCormack said while they were taking it week by week, the Lions challenge was one they were
Galofaro takes lead at Storm
New Sydenham Hillside women’s coach Michael Galofaro is keen to help the club’s women’s program further develop.
Galofaro has come through the junior ranks and was part of the club’s second XI last season.
When the opportunity came up to coach the women’s side, Galofaro said it was something he was excited to do.
“It’s something new for me, I’ve never done something like this before,” he said.
“I wanted to give it a go and I wanted to help the club out in a positive way.
“It’s a good opportunity to try it out as well.”
Galofarosaideveryonehadbeenreally supportive since the announcement and he was keen to get started.
He said he would look to work closely with men’s coach Warren Hackney, who has previously coached the women’s side and instrumental in setting up the program.
“I’ll look to work with the girls that have been playing under other people and what has been working,” he said.
The club is keen to have two women’s sides again this season. Last season the Storm had one team in the Cricket VictorianWomen’sCommunityCricket Competition and one in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association.
The club will have a meet the coach day in the coming weeks and are hoping to get some new players on board.
Galofaro said having been at the club he already knows most of the team, but is excited to get to work with them on the cricket field.
For Galofaro, who will continue to play in the men’s competition, Sydenham-Hillside is the perfect place for someone to start or continue their cricket journey.
“Sydenham-Hillside makes sure that they work with what your needs are and are good at supporting everyone.”

Better Eclipse launched the biggest campaign of his career in style when he accounted for severaltalentedrivalsintheOurMaestroFree
For All at Melton on Saturday night.
Greg Sugars latched onto the back of Hurricane Harley when that horse made a three wide move with a lap to travel and Better Eclipse assumed the role outside the leader Yambukian for the final 900 metres of the race.
Better Eclipse ($5) joined Yambukian upon straightening before surging to the lead half waydownthehomestraightandhadsufficient in reserve to hold off Hurricane Harley and Yambukian in a slick 26.4 last quarter.
Sugars was suitably happy with the performance of his stable star who hasn’t been seen since returning from a New Zealand campaign in April.
“His work at home has been super and he
was pretty close to the mark tonight and he willprobablysharpenupwiththerun,”Sugars said. “I was about to take off approaching the bell but when Hurricane Harley went in front of me I thought I’d just tag him into it.
Sugars said the horse had thrived from a short spell in the paddock following the trip to New Zealand.
“Hehadahecticseasonasafour-year-oldso he needed a break when he came home from New Zealand and he has come back better for it,” he said.
Sugars outlined the son of Betterthancheddar’s immediate racing itinerary for the remainder of them year.
“He’ll go to Sydney for the Len Smith Mile and then onto the Victoria Cup and all going well we will head up north for the Inter Dominion with him,” he said.
Star Celebrity continued to build on her
picket fence form line after leading all the way in the Alabar Vicbred Platinum Mares Sprint Championship Final on Saturday night. The Emma Stewart trained four-year-old has now won her past seven starts.
Allan McDonough wasted little time putting the $1.90 favorite into the early action as he pushed through aggressively from an outside second row draw to wrest the lead from stable mate Whatadelight shortly after the start.
When McDonough released the reins approaching the home turn, Star Celebrity reeled off a 26.4 last 400 metres making it impossible for any of her rivals to run her down in the home straight. The daughter of Always B Miki has now won nine of her 20 starts and McDonough said she had proven herself against the best of her age.
Darley re-signs Jordan
By Tara Murray
Darley has locked in Dan Jordan for another two Ballarat Football League seasons.
On Tuesday, The Devils announced the club and Jordan had agreed to terms to lock him in until the end of 2025 following careful consideration and acknowledgment of Jordan’s outstanding leadership and dedication to the team’s success.
Devils president Mark Shelly said the committee and football department were in unanimous agreement to extend Jordan’s tenure as senior coach to the end of a fourth season.
Jordan said he was honoured and excited that the club has shown faith in appointing him for the next two years.
“I feel as a whole club we are establishing a great platform to build sustained success and I, the coaching group, board, playing group, members and supporters are motivated to return the Devils to the top tier of the competition across all grades.”
Darley football operations manager, Craig Baker expressed his enthusiasm about the
extension.
“The club was keen for Dan to continue for another season, and when he mentioned two more, we jumped at the opportunity,” he said.
“We feel this appointment gives not only our senior players, but also our junior players the best possible chance to become senior footballers- under a coach with AFL experience. One point players are extremely important to the club.”
Meanwhile on Saturday, the Devils got an important win against North Ballarat.
The Devils kicked straight in the first quarter to lead by 10 points and still held a slim lead at half time.
The margin blew out to 27 points at the last break, with the Devils able to finish it off to come away with a 10.11 (71)-5.7 (37).
Joel Cadman and Darren Leonard kicked two goals each for the Devils, with Matthew Brett named best on ground.
The Devils move to second on the ladder.
The Devils face bottom side Melton South this Saturday.
In other results, ladder leading Melton had to survive a scare against the Sunbury Lions.
The Lions were within touching distance all game, but couldn’t get close enough to make the the Bloods panic.
The Bloods getting the win, 13.11 (89)-9.8 (62).
Braedan Kight kicked four goals for the Bloods, with Ben Archard named their best.
The Bloods remain two games clear at the top of the table.
Bacchus Marsh got its third win of the season, beating Melton South.
The Cobras started well and led by 30 points atquartertimeand32pointsathalftimetime.
A seven goal to nil third quarter put the result beyond doubt, with the Cobras winning 18.18 (126)-2.8 (20).
Jake Owen kicked five goals in a best on ground performance for the Cobras.
Tyson Shea and Josh Huxtable were other standouts.
For the Panthers, it was all single goal kickers.
Jarrod Bibby and Rhys Lee were named their best.

A-League
Western United has secured the services of Grace Maher from Canberra United for the A-League Women’s season. The 24-year-old will add to United’s list of young centre-backs, adding ball-playing ability into the backline. Maher said the chance to join a grand finalist team in its second season was one she jumped at. “I’m extremely pleased to be joining Western United for the upcoming season…I really felt this team will push me out of my comfort zone, making me a better player and person,” she said.
RDFL
The Western Rams scored their highest score of the Riddell District Football League season against an undermanned Diggers Rest on Saturday. The Burras led throughout the contest, but weren’t able to blow the Rams away in a 17.13 (115)-5.4 (34) win. Marcus Calvaresi kicked four goals for the Burras in a best on ground performance. Ryan Tyson was the Rams best.
RDNL
The Western Rams have moved back into the Riddell District Netball League top five with two rounds remaining. The Rams faced Diggers Rest and were too strong all day, winning 81-38. Malia Seumanutafa shot 51 goals for the Burras, while Maggie Payne moved from defence into attack for the Burras, shooting 24 goals. With Romsey losing, the Rams are now in fifth spot, two points clear of the Redbacks. Meanwhile, Melton Centrals had a 52-42 loss to Riddell.
WRFL
Caroline Springs has slipped out of the Western Region Football League division 1 top four after losing to Yarraville Seddon Eagles on Saturday. The Eagles led all day after restricting the Lakers to just one goal in the first half. While the second half was even, the damage had been done with the Eagles winning, 14.13 (97)-9.12 (66).
