Housing crisis deepens

By Liam McNally Eight thousand Brimbank and Melton households seeking crisis accommodation and private renal assistance were turned away last year, while another 7000 households are on a waiting list, according to the Salvation Army.

Data from Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) reveals that Melbourne’s west as Victoria’s highest proportion of unmet housing needs, with more than 20,000 households – or 6.9 per cent – deemed inappropriate. This means people are either experiencing homelessness, living

in overcrowded homes or spending over 30 per cent of their income on rent.

In Brimbank and Melton, the figure jumps to 7.2 per cent, or 4800 houses in Brimbank and 4100 houses in Melton.

Salvation Army Vicwest homelessness manager Cheryl McKinley said rising rents and inflation are causing a “very big” increase in people needing housing services in Melton and Brimbank.

“We’re seeing a move away from those just on a Centrelink … payment that are struggling with their rent working families are coming through our services for the very first time,” she said.

Ms McKinley said the Salvos are dealing with the increase in an already under-resourced emergency housing sector and wait-times are as long as “a ball of string”.

“There needs to be more affordable housing.

There needs to be more social housing that is built,” she said.

CHIA Victoria acting chief executive Jess Pomeroy said the report highlights the urgent need for more social housing in Victoria.

“The inner, west, and south-east parts of Melbourne are among the top 10 areas in Australia with the highest number of households facing unmet need,” she said.

“Victoria has the lowest proportion of social

housing in the country. We urgently need governments to provide a clear, long-term funding pipeline for social and affordable housing beyond the Big Housing Build.”

Victoria’s Big Housing Build program is a $5.3 billion investment in social and affordable housing that aims to deliver 12,000 new dwellings including 9,300 new social housing dwellings by 2026.

A government spokesperson said there is a “high demand” for social and affordable housing options across Victoria and Australia.

Council to investigate sediment

By Liam McNally Moorabool council will investigate “large amounts of sediment” getting into the Werribee River from Bacchus Marsh construction developments.

As reported by Star Weekly, The Bacchus Marsh Platypus Alliance and scientists from Bio2Lab have been using sensors to measure water turbidity (cloudiness caused by fine sediment) along the river, which showed turbidity at one sensor above the EPA pollution threshold on 95 per cent of the 117 days measured.

Moorabool councillor Moira Berry moved a motion at a council meeting on Tuesday, February 1 to investigate the large amounts of sediment, and the effectiveness of sediment barriers that are in place to prevent sediment from flowing into the storm water pipes.

Cr Berry said she had viewed the “excessive” amount of sediment entering the river.

“There was like an island appearing in the Werribee river, it is actually covering the food that the wildlife in the river feed on, particularly the platypus,” she said.

“The barriers that we viewed on the day that Cr Dudzik and myself were there were partly

falling down, sediment was getting under them hence why the sediment was going down the storm water pipes into the river.”

A report to the council meeting said the sediment is running from the storm water pipes that run from the new Stonehill Development area into the Werribee River at the rear of 270 Werribee Vale Road, Bacchus Marsh, and that the sediment is building up in the river and destroying vegetation and food for wildlife.

It said the sediment barriers that run alongside Werribee Vale Road, opposite the farmhouse at 270 are falling over, lifted in

spots and allowing sediment to protrude under the barrier which allows sediment to then flow into the storm water pipes.

The motion to investigate the sediment pollution and effectiveness of barriers was moved unanimously by council, and mayor Rod Ward commended Bacchus Marsh Platypus ALliance and president Jodie Valpied for their work along the river.

Stonehill developers RPM Group were contacted for comment.

Bloomin’ good sustainability ideas Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden (FMBG) is hosting a free guided tour as a part of the National Sustainable Living Festival on Sunday, February 12.

The National Sustainable Living Festival runs throughout February, and comprises more than 130 events across the country that are aimed at celebrating and showcasing ideas and actions for sustainability.

For the festival, FMBG is hosting a guided tour of the Melton Botanic Gardens to give people a chance to learn about climate-resistant plants that can tolerate a dry climate and low water requirements.

FBMG president John Bentley said they’ve been running the Sustainable Living Guided Tour for almost a decade.

“We think it’s really important because one of the underlying principles of the Melton Botanic Garden is sustainability,” he said.

“We showcase that through the types of plants that we have, low water use once plants are established, trying to reuse and repurpose materials where we can, sourcing from sustainable organisations, and through our practices at the depot.

On the tour guests will see sustainability principles and re-purposing in practice over a

gentle 90 minute walk and see garden beds that mimic conditions in Western Australia, South Australia, Southern Africa, the Mediterranean, California, and Central and South America.

Other highlights include the Dryland Eucalyptus Arboretum, Bush Foods Garden, Sensory Garden, and indigenous plantings along Ryans Creek and beside the lake.

The event will take place from 10am to noon on Sunday, February 12, walkers will meet at Depot 21, Williams Street in Melton.

Diggers Rest residents say they feel left out of the conversation about level crossing removal works along the Sunbury train line.

In October, Sunbury MP Josh Bull announced level crossing removals would take place at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road in Diggers Rest to make the Sunbury line free of level crossings by 2026. Mr Bull is also the level crossings parliamentary secretary.

Community advocate David O’Connor and 14 other signatories reached out to Mr Bull via post and email to ask for a face-to-face meeting with himself and the level crossing project team about a month ago, but they had not received a response when Star Weekly went to print.

As part of planning, the level crossing project team undertook site investigation works during November and December last year.

These works included geotechnical, land and utility surveying around the sites, traffic surveys along Watsons Road and Old Calder Highway and surveying of the rail corridor.

Mr Bull said there would be comprehensive public information sessions on every aspect of the Diggers Rest project prior to any construction.

“As with all local projects I am happy to meet with residents to hear their views and discuss the project in more detail,” he said.

Jasdev Singh, Diggers Rest resident and letter signatory, said he and others were anxious to make sure they were involved in the process of planning.

“We are not against removing the level crossing, but we want to know how they are doing it,” he said.

Mr O’Connor praised Mr Bull’s previous efforts to keep the community informed, but having not heard from him yet “makes us nervous”.

Transport tops Melton council’s federal budget wish list Melton council is calling for funding for construction of the Outer Metropolitan Rail and Road Ring and the Western Intermodal Freight Terminal in this year’s federal budget.

The council released its budget wish list last week, outlining the projects it believes need funding to help support more jobs, create better infrastructure and to help invest in the future of young people’s education.

The Outer Metropolitan Road and Rail Link is a critical transformational project that would connect the outer north, west and south-west of Melbourne along with freight hubs and employment precincts.

The Western Intermodal Freight Terminal

at Truganina would be the catalyst for thousands of local jobs and see the removal of up to 2000 daily truck movements from Melbourne’s west.

The council is also calling for further funding for upgrades to the Western Highway, with $10 million allocated last year for a business case.

The council is also continuing to seek the electrification of the rail line to Melton and new stations at Mt Atkinson, Thornhill Park and Calder Park, and the adoption of the Melbourne Metro 2 East- West Rail Link.

The council wants the creation of a new tertiary school of medicine to train doctors and

allied health specialists for outer metropolitan areas and regional centres locally.

An expansion of the state government’s announcement of a TAFE in Cobblebank for the construction sector to also include logistics, health, education and community services is also on the list.

Melton mayor Lara Carli said the budget submission is about securing investment in key major projects that will boost our economy and create significant long-term jobs.

She said it’s a chance to create easy lifestyles in the outer west where people can work close to home and spend more time with family.

“Council’s jobs and investment attraction

strategy demonstrates how an accelerated pipeline of investment can deliver 100,000 jobs in the City of Melton by 2050 contributing $19 billion to the economy and an additional $10 billion in supply chain impacts,” she said.

“Our federal budget submission is founded on this strategy. We’re wanting all three levels of government to work together to provide an equity of opportunity to our residents with access to local, quality diverse employment, skills and education as well as upgraded roads and efficient frequent public transport.”

Free kinder opens opportunities

By Liam McNally A Melton childcare service operator said the state government’s introduction of free kinder has been “amazing“ for his centre, increasing enrolments by 50 per cent and allowing more educators to be hired at above the recommended ratio.

More than 2750 early childhood services across the state are offering free kinder for Victoria’s three and four-year-olds in 2023 as a part of the state government’s Best Start, Best Life reform.

Ninety-seven per cent of Victoria’s kindergarten providers have opted-in to free kinder, including sessional kinder and long

day-care centres, with 100 percent of kinder services in 44 local government areas opting-in to the state government’s free kinder program.

Under the $270 million initiative, children enrolled in three-year-old kindergarten will receive between five and 15 hours of funded learning each week, and those in four-year-old kindergarten will receive 15 hours per week.

The government promises free kinder will save families up to $2500 in fees per child each year and give more than 28,000 Victorians greater flexibility to return to work if they choose.

Participating kindergarten programs will receive funding directly from the state government.

Melton’s Early Learning Childcare and Kindergarten communications officer Rohan Jarrah said the program has been “amazing”.

He said free kinder has increased sign-up to their kinder program by about 50 per cent, which has allowed them to hire more educators.

“Everyone’s really happy with it,” he said.

“We’ve been able to introduce above-ratio educators for three to four hours per day in the kinder program, and that’s helped us better design our program around children who need inclusion support.”

The Best Start, Best Life reform aims to deliver free kindergarten for three and four-year-olds, create 50 government-owned and operated childcare centres and establish

pre-prep, an extra year of play-based learning.

All children enrolled in funded three-year-old kindergarten will receive a free Kinder Kit full containing educational toys, books and resources.

Early Childhood and Pre-Prep Minister Ingrid Stitt said that for young families Free Kinder means “more choice, more flexibility, and more money in their pockets”.

“With this reform we’re making sure every child gets the early education they need to thrive,” she said.

“Free Kinder doesn’t just give our littlest Victorians the best start in life, it also gives parents, particularly mothers, the freedom to go back to work if and when they choose.”

‘Real honour’: Principal Almost 300 pupils arrived at the new Thornhill Park Primary on Monday, January 30, for their first day of school for 2023.

Principal Darryl Spiteri said there’s a “really great atmosphere” at the Baxterpark Drive school.

“There’s been a real sense of community connection from the offset, it’s been a really good start,” he said.

The new facility is made up of 16 classroom spaces divided into three “learning neighborhoods”, with a dedicated art room, STEM room, food-tech room, performing arts space and a competition-size gym.

Mr Spiteri has worked in education for more than 20 years, primarily in the western suburbs, most recently he was the principal of the nearby Rockbank Primary School.

Mr Spiteri said it’s a “real honour” to be a

principal in a new school.

“It’s something that is a rare opportunity and doesn’t come around very often … It’s amazing to start from the ground up … now that it’s up and running, seeing everything happening, it’s like all of your work comes to life,” he said.

“The intention of our school is to create a space where students feel safe, where they feel safe to learn, where they’re able to be curious and to learn new things, where they’re challenged to find out things that they really want to know.

“I also think it’s important that we create a real sense of community culture, bringing in our families and some of our community groups and ensuring that Thornhill Park Primary becomes a hub for the new suburb.”

Five new west schools open More than one million Victorian students returned to school last week, with families in Melbourne’s growing western suburbs benefitting from five of 12 new schools open for term one.

Education Minister Natalie Hutchins officially opened Thornhill Park Primary School, Ngarri Primary School, Karwan Primary School, Nearnung Primary School, and Lollypop Creek Primary School and welcomed the schools’ first students.

Ngarri Primary School has space for 650 students, while Karwan Primary School, Nearnung Primary School, Thornhill Park Primary School and Lollypop Creek Primary School have space for 525 students.

The schools feature specialist learning spaces for subjects including food technology and science as well as a competition-grade gymnasium, two outdoor hard courts and music and drama spaces.

Ballan Library is one step closer

By Liam McNally A concept plan for the $7.25 million Ballan Library and Community Hub has been approved by Moorabool council.

The new centre was confirmed in January last year after $5 million in funding was secured through the Growing Suburbs fund and the Living Libraries program.

The concept plan for the library was put to council at a meeting on February 1.

The concept plan includes a variety of study spaces and flexible meeting rooms spread across the library, an outdoor space to cater for programs and events, exhibition spaces, a dedicated children’s library area, a dedicated teen space, and a maternal and child health space with waiting area and parents’ room.

Key design factors considered include creating a street presence which is in keeping with the historical buildings in the area while creating a contemporary façade with an

“inviting presence”, incorporating recycled products, ensuring the building has good transparency to show activity in the building, and creating the opportunity for a civic plaza area and a laneway with rear access to the existing council car park.

The Ballan Library and Community Hub will now go into more detailed architectural planning. Construction is expected to begin in mid 2023 and be completed mid to late 2024.

Moorabool mayor Rod Ward said council is

“very pleased” to approve the Ballan Library and Community Hub Concept Plan.

“This is the next step in making the hub a reality. The hub will be a fantastic asset for the community of Ballan and surrounds, and also result in an exciting and vibrant ‘plaza style’ meeting place in the Ballan town centre,” he said.

“We can’t wait to be able to offer this terrific community hub to residents and visitors to Ballan.”

Origami entrepreneur A Hillside teenager has been nominated in two categories in the 2022 Victorian 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards after developing a successful small business, and using that platform to launch a social enterprise.

Kiana Jackson has been nominated for the HR Gurus Career Achievement Award as well as the Strategic Alliance Network Small Business Award.

In 2020, the now 17-year-old returned from three months of study at a Japanese international school to a Melbourne in lockdown.

During lockdowns she began practising origami, a hobby which quickly developed, into a small business, Kiana Mei Design.

Kiana Mei Design sells origami-based art at over 70 markets in Melbourne, including at permanent stalls at St Kilda Esplanade and Queen Victoria night markets.

Kiana said with hard work and determination she built her business to a $70,000 a year income stream while studying year 11 full-time.

“Being nominated for both the awards is definitely something that I feel very honoured about, especially to have my work and what I do recognised, it definitely is such a privilege to have been chosen for both categories.”

Kiana is ready to use her business platform to launch a social enterprise, a series of “zero-cost” markets for stallholders under the age of 18.

Kiana said she hopes to support young people with their entrepreneurial journey.

“Mentoring them and giving them advice and allowing them to start their business in a supportive environment … and allow young people to earn an income from their passions and ideas just as I did,” she said Winners will be announced on April 28.

Commercial boost for Thornhill Park residents Thornhill Park residents will soon have access a $45 million town centre, dubbed Central Square, following the start of construction on Sunday, January 29.

Melton mayor Lara Carli led the sod-turning ceremony to mark the beginning of construction along with about 100 guests.

Situated on an 8170sqm site, the new town centre will span two levels of around 3500sqm of commercial floorspace.

The centre will be anchored by an IGA + Liquor supermarket and will be home to an Anytime Fitness, a medical centre, a Discount Chemist Outlet Pharmacy, and a selection of specialty retailers, cafes, and outdoor dining amenities.

The centre will be serviced by 115 onsite car parks, and its design also allows for further activation in the form of weekend markets and stalls.

Central Square is being developed by Landmark Developers on behalf of Central Square Pty Ltd. Local Builder, Insitu Group have been appointed for the construction and delivery of the project.

Central Square director Preety Dandiwal said Thornhill Park estate is currently “quite limited” in terms of amenity and “residents have recently expressed the frustration of not having everyday essentials within reach“.

“We have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to give back to the community on a local level while also creating local jobs,” she said.

A raffle was drawn at the event from which three community members won a share of $3000 in prizes.

Melton’s petrol prices are coming under greater scrutiny with a local MP vowing to help take action to bring prices in line with neighbouring areas.

Melton MP Steve McGhie said the area’s families are being unfairly hit with higher prices than people in neighbouring suburbs, often paying more than 20 cents per litre extra at the pump and spending at least $10 more every time they fill up.

Mr McGhie said he has taken the issue up with the Consumer Affairs Minister Melissa Horne and will be contacting federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor to discuss this issue soon, as fuel prices are regulated by the federal government.

“In the interim I strongly encourage residents to complain to the ACCC [Australian Competition and Consumer Commission]” he said.

The ACCC’s latest petrol monitoring report showed that average petrol prices rose in the 2020 September quarter after a record low earlier in the year.

Although the ACCC does not set fuel prices, it does monitor retail fuel prices on a daily basis.

A spokesperson said it has the power to investigate where it sees issues of concern.

“Where we find sufficient evidence we will take action to protect consumers against misleading and anti-competitive conduct by fuel retailers.”

Mr McGhie’s promise to take action was widely welcomed on social media, where some residents said they had seen price differences of up to 50 cents per litre between Melton and Watergardens.

Melton’s Andre Peters said the lack of independent competition makes it easier for the major fuel companies to keep prices inflated well above those in neighbouring suburbs.

“Sadly there is no competition in Melton as there are no independents,” he said.

“Generally we pay at least 20 cents a litre more at times in Melton.”

A BP spokesman said petrol prices at the pump can be impacted by a number of different factors.

He said while there are currently about 1400 BP branded sites across Australia, about three quarters are owned by independent business partners who set their own retail pricing.

“When it comes to retail fuel pricing, our aim is to be competitive and attract customers to our sites,” he said.

“Generally speaking, the price at the pump is impacted by a number of different factors.

In particular, international product prices and competition between service stations in a local

area. There are also other factors including exchange rates, taxes and local operating costs.”

On Monday, unleaded 91 pump prices at Melton’s BP, Coles Express and 7/11 Mobil were all at 155.9 cents per litre, according to price comparison website Petrol Spy, with Woolworths Caltex at 168.9.

Meanwhile Bacchus Marsh BP, Coles Express and 7/11 Mobil prices were 129.9 cents per litre – 26 cents less per litre – and independent outlets were just 119.9 cents per litre.

Melton’s petrol prices are coming under greater scrutiny with a local MP vowing to help take action to bring prices in line with neighbouring areas.

Melton MP Steve McGhie said the area’s families are being unfairly hit with higher prices than people in neighbouring suburbs, often paying more than 20 cents per litre extra at the pump and spending at least $10 more every time they fill up.

“I have had many constituents raise concerns regarding the prices of petrol in Melton being noticeably higher than in other areas,” Mr McGhie said.

“I am deeply concerned that families in Melton are paying more than they should be.”

Aerodrome looks to the future

By Liam McNally The Bacchus Marsh Aerodrome will have capacity for air traffic to grow by almost 50 per cent in the next 20 years, following Moorabool council’s approval of a masterplan for the aerodrome.

The Bacchus Marsh Aerodrome was constructed in the 1940s and it was originally used for military training.

The aerodrome currently hosts three gliding clubs, the Australian Gliding Museum, two flight training schools, two aircraft maintenance businesses, and is used

for private flying and aerial firefighting.

The facility recorded 30,000 air-traffic movements in 2022 and is projected to increase to 44,600 movements by 2042.

The master plan aims to oversee the growth over the facility over the next 20 years by improving facilities and accommodating for demand increase.

Items to be actioned in the plan by 2025 include developing business cases for runway lighting installation and terminal facilities, investigating opportunities for the installation of a helicopter landing site, JET A1 fuel facilities, and parallel gliding strips,

as well as installing public toilets.

By 2027, it is hoped the runway and taxiway can be widened, while there are also plans to construct a common user terminal facility, investigate a turning lane into the facility and sealing internal roads.

Mayor Rod Ward said the plan was developed after consultation with stakeholders and the community.

“It is an important document that details use of the land, and ensures long term viability of the aerodrome whilst providing an exciting blueprint for future development and opportunities to further enhancement of

the Bacchus Marsh Aerodrome,” he said.

“It will also protect the aerodrome from surrounding growth and inappropriate activities.”

The plan comes a week after the state government announced a grant of over $450,000 for the aerodrome, which Bacchus Marsh Aerodrome management chairman Trevor Oliver said would go towards taxiway surface treatment works and the installation of a lighting system.

Hair-raising challenge A young Melton girl will be giving her long hair the big chop in order to support kids going through cancer treatment.

Hannah, 9, has been growing her hair for almost half of her life, so that one day she could cut it off and donate it to be used in wigs for people going through chemotherapy.

She decided to undertake this endeavor at just four years after losing her grandfather, Bob Willey, to cancer in 2018 and becoming inspired to do something to make a difference.

Four years and 35.5cms of later, Hannah is finally ready to chop her locks. Her family signed up to Variety’s Hair with Heart charity, and the date has been set as February 25. Hannah said she still misses her grandfather, but is feeling “proud of herself” for the work she’s doing.

Hannah’s father, Cameron Willey said he’s also feeling proud.

“There’s been lots of knots and tears and hair brushes that we’ve gone through over the past four years, but we’re super proud of her,” he said.

“It’d be good for anyone and everyone to get on board with it, it’s a great charity that helps sick kids feel normal while undergoing treatment.”

Along with the hair, Hannah is also donating money to Variety through the Hair with Heart program, and people can contribute to her cause.

Wigs can cost families up to $6000, and last 1 to 2 years, meaning families can spend tens of thousands of dollars on the purchase of wigs throughout a child’s youth.

Businesses adapt to plastic ban Businesses in Melbourne’s west have welcomed the state government’s ban on single-use plastics.

The ban on single-use plastic came into effect on Wednesday, February 1, requiring business owners to stop handing out drinking straws, cutlery, plates, drink stirrers, and expanded polystyrene food and drink containers.

Michelle Bailey, owner of Melton catering business Graze With Michelle welcomed the change.

“I think it’s a positive change. A lot of people

have phased it out a long time a go anyway.

For my business, I’ve always chosen to use biodegradable palm leaf platters and bowls,” she said. “I think reducing waste is important to everybody across the board.”

Another western suburbs business owner, Khoa Ngo, began making changes to his bubble tea businesses about a month ago.

Mr Ngo said the transition was “hard in the beginning” because he had to spend money buying the new supplies.

“I have a lot of [plastic] stock left and I don’t

know what to do with it, at least $1000 worth,” he said. “But I know it’s for environmental reasons. I have kids so I know we have to protect the earth for the future,” he said.

Single-use plastics currently make up a third of Victoria’s litter, and the state government said it is committed to diverting 80 per cent of waste from landfill by 2030.

Environment Minister Ingrid Stitt said the government is “taking action” to protect Victoria’s environment and reduce pollution by banning single-use plastic items and

“supporting businesses to switch to reusables instead.”

“Plastic pollution has significant impacts on our health, wildlife and the environment.

This single-use plastics ban is a crucial step to protect Victoria’s rivers, waterways and oceans from plastic pollution,” she said.

Last year, the state government said it invested $1 million towards new technology that will turn hard-to-recycle materials like cartons and coffee cups into sustainable building products.

Blood-y good donation When Graham Becker donated blood for the 300th time, he was challenged by a nurse to keep going.

The Western Suburbs resident was told he has “great veins” and should easily be able to reach 1000.

“I said, ‘alright, I’ll see what I can do’,” he said.

In late January, Mr Becker made a “milestone donation” and donated for the 600th time.

“I’m in my 42nd year of donating, I have helped save 1800 lives so far,” he said.

Mr Becker began donating in the 1980s and is adamant the process is not as painful as some believe.

“When I first got my drivers licence I ticked the box to become an organ donor, and I figured I’m donating my organs, what else can I donate?,” he said.

“I gave blood for the first seventeen years and because I’ve got such good veins, the nurses switched me over to platelet.

“You got to see the patients in the oncology

first hand so that was a bit of motivation to keep going, and then they switched me over to plasma.

“Now I give blood, plasma, platelet, and I’m on the bone marrow registry as well Mr Becker says he classes his actions as “community service” but says the heartfelt thanks he receives in return is welcome.

“I’ve had certain times when the blood bank would issue out a video, letting you know your blood might have gone to this patient, like a 16-year-old leukaemia from Queensland,” “You’re a part of that girl surviving.

“I’m just doing my bit for the community.”

Mr Becker shares his contributions on social media, and hopes other people can be inspired to donate too.

“I always say on my posts, roll up your sleeves, come on down and join,” he said.

“Everyone is precious.”

Structure review for Moorabool

By Liam McNally Moorabool council will undergo an electoral structure review that will reconsider the appropriate number of councillors, wards, and ward boundaries for the municipality.

Throughout 2023-24, 39 Victorian councils will undergo electoral structure reviews, with round one reviews for 12 rural shire councils, including Moorabool, kicking off next week.

Moorabool currently has four wards. the Central Moorabool, West Moorabool, and Woodland wards have one councillor each, and the East Moorabool ward has four councillors.

The Local Government Act 2020 introduced several changes, including that all small and large rural shire councils must now have electoral structures that are either unsubdivided, subdivided with single-councillor wards, or multi-councillor wards with an equal number of councillors per ward.

The reviews will be conducted by independent electoral representation advisory panels. Under the act, the electoral commissioner or delegate must be a member of a panel.

Electoral commissioner Warwick Gately said the panels will consider if councils have an appropriate number of councillors and whether

they should be one large unsubdivided area or subdivided into wards.

“If the council will be subdivided, the panel will look at how many wards the council should have, the number of councillors in each ward, ward boundaries and ward names.”

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) will provide technical and administrative support to the panels.

The 12 councils in round one have been divided into three groups. For each group of councils, there will be two public information sessions to announce the start of the reviews, explain the processes, and open the submissions period.

The VEC encourages all Victorians, particularly those in the local council areas under review, to contribute to the review process and have their say.

For group three, which includes Moorabool, online public information sessions will be held at noon, February 6, and at 6pm, February 7.

Preliminary submissions open 9am February 8, and close at 5pm March 1.

People interested in making a submission can map their proposed electoral structure online using the public submission tool available on the VEC website.

Bringing history to life one last time Western suburbs author Alison Stuart is returning to the fictional town of Maiden’s Creek for one last time.

Her third book in the Maiden’s Creek series, titled ‘The Homecoming’, is now available in local bookstores, including Book and Paper in Williamstown. Based on the town of Walhalla and set in 1892, the book follows Charlie O’Reilly and her return to the town as acting matron of the local hospital.

Stuart said her passion is writing historical fiction and incorporating romantic elements into the story.

“I believe the history is very important as part of the story,” she said.

“I just think so much of the past dictates how we think today.

“It puts us into context.”

Stuart said the first book in the Maiden’s Creek series, titled ‘The Postmistress’, focuses on the smallpox epidemic, which echoed a number of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She said she approaches her characters by thinking about who would have been the key people within a small Australian town in the 1800s.

Stuart said ‘The Homecoming’ also features a murder mystery, inspired by her Harriet Gordon murder mystery series written under the pen name of A.M. Stuart.

“I enjoy the puzzles of writing murder mysteries,” she said.

Stuart said while she is bidding farewell to the Maiden’s Creek series, she is also planning for the next Harriet Gordon book to be the series’ last.

“I’m looking forward to starting something new,” she said.

With the fire danger period in effect across Melton and Moorabool, Greater Western Water (GWW) is encouraging customers to be prepared with alternative water sources in the event supply is impacted by fire.

In a bushfire, customers may experience low water pressure, loss of supply or reduced quality of water. This could be due to heat and fire damage to equipment, or extreme demand for water from firefighters.

Operations and Delivery Solutions general manager Jodie Hallam said while GWW is prepared for the fire season, water supply cannot be guaranteed during a bushfire. As a precaution alternative supplies of water should be on hand.

“The above average rainfall has led to increased grassy growth and an increased risk of fires as the grass dries out during warm and dry conditions. In the event of a fast-moving fire, it’s vital to be prepared with access to alternative drinking water for household members and pets.

“The Fire Ready Kit available at the CFA website is a great resource and provides lots of helpful advice on how to prepare for bushfires, including ways to set up alternative water supplies that are independent from the mains,” she said.

If the water supply is affected, GWW will alert customers via text messages, web updates and social media. Ms Hallam reiterated the importance of customers having up to date contact details on their GWW account to ensure they can be reached.

“Notifications about impacts to water supply may include boil water notices or do not drink notices. We urge all customers to check their personal details are up to date on their GWW account to make sure they receive all safety messages.”

Good Shepherd welcomes family violence initiatives Melton-Brimbank family violence service Good Shepherd has welcomed the news that the state government has implemented all 227 recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Minister for Prevention of Family Violence Ros Spence announced the government has implemented all recommendations of the 2016 Royal Commission on January 28.

The government said the Royal Commission revealed the devastating prevalence and impact of family violence and set out a framework for whole-of-system reform to end family violence in Victoria.

Since first opening in 2018, the Orange Door Network has assisted more than 267,000 people, including more than 107,000 children.

Good Shepherd general manager of safety and resilience Livia La Rocca said the state government “must be commended on their significant investment and commitment to addressing family violence”.

“There has been a great investment from the Victorian government in additional resources to assist victim-survivors from more flexible funding, case management boosts and refuge support to funding for pets who are important members of the family,“ she said.

“Additionally, there has been a commitment to acknowledge and support children as victim survivors with specific funding for children in refuge. There has also

been an investment in workforce capability with funding and mandatory qualifications for frontline family violence practitioners.”

Ms Spence said the government will continue “to ensure the lived experiences of victim survivors of family violence are at the forefront of reform, policy and service delivery.”

“Victoria owes victim survivors a great debt for their generosity in sharing their stories and experiences, so that we can continue to improve the way we prevent and respond to family violence,” she said.

“Definitely the Lerderderg River is a calling card. I grew up in the western suburbs of Melbourne so my parents used to load us up and drive us up to Mackenzie Flat so we could go for a swim … and definitely the gorge walk out to Grahams Dam, which is only an hour’s walk and reasonably easy,” she said.

“Unfortunately while other kids were watching Video Hits of a Saturday morning, I was being dragged around to do bush walks and picnics.”

Ms Karner recommended people looking for a “hidden gem” check out the Brisbane Ranges camp sites.

“It’s not as busy as somewhere like the You Yangs or Lerderderg, it’s a little bit further out of Bacchus Marsh but it’s very quiet, lots of beautiful nature. In springtime there’s orchids

Walking the heritage high wire A group of West Footscray residents have questioned the value of Maribyrnong council placing interim heritage controls on their homes, despite many being unable to carry out basic repairs and having their market value slashed. Matthew Sims spoke with property owners about how a permanent heritage overlay would impact their dreams for the places they wish to call home.

est Footscray resident Arthur Richardson is a Vietnam War veteran who has been unable to work since 1996.

Now, he said that due to Maribyrnong council’s planned amendment to implement an interim heritage overlay on his house, the projected market value of his Duke Street house according to a local real estate agent has dropped by up to $400,000 or about 18.4 per cent – from $1.85 to $1.9 million to $1.45 to $1.55 million.

“Besides the mental fuss it’s caused, the financial loss is enormous,” Mr Richardson said.

In September 2021, council endorsed the West Footscray Inter-war and Post-war Heritage Precinct Study 2021 for community consultation conducted across 1400 property owners in December 2021 and requested the planning minister provide authorisation to prepare and exhibit a planning scheme amendment to implement interim planning controls to protect the precincts in the study.

The minister granted authorisation in November 2021, with interim controls then implemented on December 12, 2021.

Under the interim heritage overlay controls, more than 900 affected property owners across eight precincts need a planning permit to demolish, alter or extend a building or construct a new building, with the intended aim to conserve and enhance the heritage value of the impacted properties.

Maribyrnong council conducted public consultation of the permanent overlay from February 28 to April 7, 2022.

After receiving 199 submission during this process, the council requested the planning minister to appoint an independent planning panel, with public hearings held in late November and December of last year.

Mr Richardson said as Duke Street contained a mixture of inter-war, post-war austere and post war brick veneer houses, it should not be considered as part of any heritage overlay.

“Our street should not be on it at all,” he said. “We are so far removed from the viewing public.”

Mr Richardson said he was “disgusted” with the council’s decision and lack of proper consultation with the community.

“They are ruling people’s lives.”

Maribyrnong chief executive Celia Haddock said the controls are the result of 18 months of community engagement of the draft West Footscray Neighbourhood Plan, beginning in 2017.

“A key theme that emerged in community feedback across this engagement focused on retention of existing neighbourhood character and the perceived lack of guidelines for heritage,” she said.

“The interim overlay approved by the planning minister is designed to safeguard existing character while potential ongoing heritage protection is considered.

“No decision on permanent heritage controls has been reached and the amendment is yet to be considered by council.”

West Footscray resident Cameron Goodison said he and his wife bought their Wellington Street home with the hope to make it their dream home and add a third bedroom despite it having a number of issues, such as a leaky roof and floorboards in need of replacement or repair.

“We are planning to have a family,” he said.

the decision to implement interim controls and push for a permanent heritage overlay with little to no direct consultation with homeowners.

“We’ve contacted the councillors and had no response,” he said. “It would have been so easy to do consultation.”

Mr Goodison and his wife have now had to move forward with renovation and extension plans six times more costly so as to not infringe with the heritage overlay controls, with any other work such as installing solar panels visible from the street or removing asbestos restricted.

“To do any work, we need to get a planning permit,” he said.

“I’m not sure it is all that safe.”

Mr Goodison said he believed the majority of affected properties within the overlay were not of significant heritage value and required immediate repair work.

“My personal opinion is they should have done a development overlay,” he said.

“Almost none of these houses are intact.

recommend any houses currently within the interim heritage overlay controls.

Mr Goodison said with the influx of young families coming to the west on the back of large-scale projects such as the Metro Tunnel, the council should be looking at supporting development to support projected growth.

“I think we’re sitting in one of the perfect spots for medium-density housing,” he said.

Royal Historical Society of Victoria heritage committee deputy chair Ian Wight said the controls are still able to change further.

“The community needs to understand that people have still had the full opportunity to object to the amendment and the council and the panel can recommend changes to the amendment in the light of these objections,” he said.

“We have not yet heard from the panel and the council may make further changes before it goes to the minister for approval.

“The interim control will lapse in favour of an amended permanent amendment.”

Mr Wight said he believed the distribution of the heritage overlay in the amendment was “fairly selective”.

“This is a difficult decision for councils,” he said. “This follows a standard procedure that has been applied in most municipalities across

Victoria to identify and document significant heritage places.”

Mr Wight said his impression is that similar heritage overlays had delivered benefits to a number of areas, including heritage overlays in Brimbank and Wyndham.

“Having had extensive experience assisting councils with heritage studies and implementation, I have found most residents in proposed heritage overlay areas have welcomed the introduction of the overlay for the benefits it brings,” he said.

“There are now around 180,000 properties in Victoria covered by the heritage overlay, most of these in residential precincts.”

The next step is for the independent planning panel to provide a report advising council and the planning minister, with the report expected early this year.

Maribyrnong council must then consider the panel’s recommendations before deciding on the amendment and submit it to the planning minister for approval, with the whole process scheduled to conclude mid-2023.

By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring If ever there was a car that needed no introduction it’s the Toyota Corolla. First released in 1966 and arriving in Australia the following year, it is the all-time biggest-selling car worldwide, passing the 50-million mark in 2021.

The current (12th generation) Corolla has been on sale here since 2019 with an upgrade for the 2023 model year providing the latest fifth-generation hybrid powertrain, the latest version of the Toyota Connected Services system as well as upgrades to the multimedia system.

As before MY23 Corolla comes in three grades: Ascent Sport, SX and ZR, each with the choice of petrol-only or petrol/electric hybrid.

Toyota is very serious about electrification and has put a lot of work into making all its vehicles low polluters. Since 2016 Corolla has come with the option of a petrol/electric hybrid and this week’s review is on the entry-level hybrid Ascent Sport hatch.

Styling With the growth in SUVs, designers of traditional sedans and hatchbacks have tended to lean towards lower, sleeker profiles as a point of different to the boxier SUV shapes.

The Gen 12 Corolla is a good example. It’s longer, lower and wider than before with a more coupe-like silhouette which combine to give a much bolder stronger road presence.

The front is quite low and the slim headlights are connected across the complete car and run well up into the sides of the bonnet. The lower grille is very large and makes a nice styling statement.

Exterior changes for the upgraded model include new 16-inch wheels for Ascent Sport and SX grades, and a redesigned front grille for both hatch and sedan variants.

Interior The interior is neat and tidy with everything in the right place. Seats are wide, comfortable and supportive. Headroom is fine in the front seats but marginal for taller rear-seat passengers 20 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 7 February, 2023

There’s no sunroof option which would otherwise reduce space.

There is reasonable width for three adults sitting in the rear seat although legroom is limited even in the longer-wheelbase sedan.

At 217 litres with the rear seats in place boot space is quite poor. 60/40 Capacity with the rear seats folded has not been listed.

Engines / transmissions The upgraded hybrid system uses a newly-developed high-output motor generator, power control unit and downsized hybrid transaxle. These provide a 13kW increase in peak power to maximum combined petrol / hybrid output of 103kW with the 1.8-litre engine.

Petrol hatch and sedan variants comes with the ongoing 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 126kW / 202Nm for the hatch and 126kW / 203Nm for the sedan.

Both petrol and hybrid models are front-wheel drive through a CVT with 10-speed sequential shift mode.

Corolla Hybrid has a 72kW/142Nm 1.8-litre Atkinson Cycle and a 53kW/163Nm synchronous permanent magnet electric motor. They drive the front wheels by way of an e-CVT automatic.

Driving There’s height and reach steering wheel adjustment. The driver’s seat has eight-way power adjustment. The front seats are comfortable and provide good support in normal driving even without side bolsters.

As with all Toyota hybrids, Corolla takes off silently under battery power before transitioning smoothly to the when needed.

The same thing happens with the stop/start system in slow traffic. In gentle downhill cruising on the open road the battery will again take over.

There’s excellent vision all round and sharp acceleration for safe urban manoeuvring.

The steering responds promptly and gives excellent feedback through the wheel.

Claimed fuel consumption for the Ascent Sport hybrid is listed at 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged around 4.8 L/100 km

Tyre noise is low at slow speeds on very smooth surfaces increasing quite a bit on rougher surfaces.

Summing up Toyota Corolla Hybrid offers excellent value with hatch prices ranging from $30,630 to $37,620.

For these prices you get a great looking small car with a large range of both safety and convenience features. And one that’s now fun to drive.

Coaches join forces at the Panthers New Melton South coach Jason Hamilton will be joined in the coaching box by his great mate Ryan Hoy for this year’s Ballarat Football League season.

The Panthers announced last week that Hoy would be co-coach alongside Hamilton as the Panthers look to rise up the ladder.

The two have previously played football together and replace Heath Pritchard, who coached the side in recent seasons.

“Ryan brings a wealth of coaching experience especially around junior development through his past coaching of young talent,” the Panthers said on social media.

“He’s a strong believer in giving opportunities to younger players and guiding them through the transition into senior football.

“Ryan is also a big believer in creating a brotherhood and strong culture amongst the playing group both on and off the field.

“Ryan has also been instrumental in

recruiting new players to our club which will improve our list and add more depth moving forward.”

Hoy thanked the club and Hamilton for giving him an opportunity to showcase the talent the club has.

Hamilton said he was looking forward to coaching together after having been on the field together.

Hamilton previously told Star Weekly it was the allure of working with a young group of players that attracted him to the role at Melton South.

“I’m really confident that I can get the job done and get the boys back up the table from where they’ve been the last few years,” he said.

“Our young guys are improving and are only going to get better. They mean 100 per cent for the club and they’re loyal guys too.”

The Panthers also announced two new signings last week as local football clearances opened.

Cassius White joins the club from Hillside, which plays in Essendon District Football League division 1.

He has previously played with Hoppers Crossing and been part of the Western Jets pathway program.

“Cassius is a 21-year-old utility player with speed to burn,” the Panthers said on social media.

“Cassius is looking forward to joining South alongside some close friends.

“Look out for Cassius’ lighting speed and ability to hit the scoreboard.”

While rain and wet grounds played havoc across the competition, the Lions produced one of their best bowling performances against second placed Box Hill.

The Lions went into day two slightly disappointed after a late batting collapse on day one. They eventually made 210, bowled out with more than 10 overs to spare.

Lions coach Mitch Stephens said they were pretty confident of getting on and playing on day two, with only a small wet piece on the pitch a concern.

Once out there, the Lions showed what they could do, bowling Box Hill out for just 79 in the 48th over.

Stephens said the day definitely didn’t play out the way they thought it would.

“We thought it would be a tough battle that would go late into the day, but it went the other way,” he said.

“We were helped by the way that Box Hill played, we were a bit confused. Their tactic was to be really defensive and we took our chances when they came.”

Stephens said while they were confused about Box Hill’s game plan they were able to stick to theirs and it worked in their favour.

“It was nice for the bowlers to be able to bowl one side of the wicket and bowl with consistent line and length,” he said.

“We stuck to the task and played the way we wanted to.”

Stephens said the bowlers bowled really well as a group.

Andrew Reid-Dick took 3-34 off his overs, while Brad Jones took 2-9 off 12.2 overs and Stephen Wiig took 1-6 off his eight overs.

Stephens said the win helps the group’s confidence grow any further that they can beat any side in the competition.

“We spoke about taking it just one week at time and preparing to play who you play next,” he said.

“We play pretty simple cricket. We can beat anyone and it shows what we are doing is working.”

With only three games being played on day two, the results and luck fell in the favour of Melton.

While the Lions sit in ninth spot, they are now only a game outside the top six with three rounds remaining.

Despite being in the finals mix, Stephens said they really hadn’t spoken about it. He said they continue to look at it one week at a time.

“We still sit outside the top six,” he said. “To get in there we have to beat Balwyn, who is up there, Yarraville and Williamstown.

A-League Western United academy goalkeeper Mayan Mayan has been called up to the South Sudan squad for the upcoming U20 African Cup of Nations in Egypt. Mayen will join the squad in camp ahead of the tournament’s commencement on February 19.

Georgies ready for new premier level challenge It’s a different challenge, but the same focus remains for Caroline Springs George Cross.

After earning promotion from state league 1 north-west following two years of hard work, the Georgies are back in the National Premier League competition, where they want to be.

The side will be in NPL3, the first time in the NPL since they were relegated from NPL2 west at the end of the 2018 season.

Coach Eric Vassiliadis said they were keen to test themselves back at the higher level.

“It’s an exciting time for us,” he said.

“There’s some new challenges and it will be a significantly different ball park. We’re pretty positive, it’s seven weeks to go before round one.

Vassiliadis said they know that they came off a pretty impressive season last year in state league 1 north-west.

He said they had freshened up the squad with some new faces and he said they

were looking OK. He said they believed they had the right personnel and balance in the squad.

“There’s that natural attrition,” he said.

“Jake Wardle who played a big role in squad has joined Melbourne Victory’s NPL side.

“We’ve brought in some new international players and some local players to give some more support.”

Wardle said he was keeping the names of who they had signed close to his chest until the transfer window closes.

He said with the transfer window closing four weeks before the season starts, it’s another challenge they’re dealing with.

In a positive sign, the club is finding not only players, but coaches and sponsors are keen to get involved.

Having focused on promotion back into the NPL competitions, the club has had to reassess their goals.

Vassiliadis said they have three key performance indicators that they are looking at. “Everyone is on the same page for the club,” he said.

“There’s a real edge at training and people want to grow the club. We’re not resting on our laurels, we want to push and go again.

“We want to continue to invest in infrastructure and our junior platform. We want to have a real foot in the door for the B-league and be in those conversations.

“And we want to ensure we have everything in place to be in a position to push for promotion.”

The Georgies start their season on March 18 against Box Hill United.

An enthralled Melton crowd was treated to a titanic battle from start to finish, with reinsman Jack Callaghan defiant on Spirit Of St Louis amid relentless challenges.

He first saw off Mach Dan and then favourite Copy That as they set down a 1 min 20.43 secs lead time, some five seconds quicker than the 2022 edition.

While more pressure was poured on, with Rock And Roll Doo and Old Town Road advancing, favourite Copy That was sensationally eased out of the race after reportedly choking down.

Meanwhile, Honolua Bay lay in wait five back in the running line and got an armchair ride up on the three-wide train behind Mach Dan. When those inside tired, Moran capitalised, cutting the final corner to the sprint lane. It would be a decisive move.

Spirit Of St Louis’ outstanding fight finally faded in the final stages as Honolua Bay swept clear on his inside, winning by five metres from I Cast No Shadow and Old Town Road.

Bacchus Marsh has received a big boost with former Essendon player Jake Long committing to the club for this year’s Ballarat Football League season.

Long, the son of Essendon legend and premiership player Michael Long, played five AFL games for the red and black after being drafted as a father-son pick.

He played 82 Victorian Football League games for the Bombers between 2014 and 2019.

Long is currently with Collingwood’s VFL side and will play with the Cobras when he doesn’t have VFL commitments.

The Cobras made the announcement on social media last week.

“We have signed Jake Long for season 2023,” the club said in its post.

“Jake possesses excellent skills and composure as well as the ability to create headaches for opposition teams with his run and carry.

“Welcome to Jake, his partner Cass and daughter Lek to the Cobras.

“We are all looking forward to enjoying watching Jake streaming through the middle of Maddingley Park.”

Long is the second new signing who has been on AFL list for new coach Jason Williams.

The Cobras announced the signing of Luke Goetz before Christmaws.

Goetz was drafted by the Western Bulldogs with selection 29 in the 2015 AFL rookie draft, and has more recently played VFL with Footscray, Essendon and Carlton.

Matt Smith-Bye is the other signing which has been announced by the Cobras so far.

“Originally from Melton South, Matt had some time away from footy before a return with Ballan in the CHFL [Central Highlands Football League],” the Cobras said on social media.

“Matt was named in Ballan’s best players in 12 of his 15 games in 2022, with his hardness at the ball and intensity both traits we can’t wait to add to our group.

“We can’t wait to officially welcome Matt and his family to Maddingley Park in season 2023.”

A lot on the line for Melton’s Bowls Vic teams Plenty is on the line for Melton’s two Bowls Victoria division 2 sides in the coming weeks, for very different reasons.

Melton’s top side, which plays in section 2, sits atop the table and is keen on premiership success and promotion.

The club’s second side, which plays in division 1, is fighting off relegation.

Melton’s Conrad Dawson said it had been a real mixed season for the club.

“Our top side is doing really well,” he said.

“Our second side is in a battle for relegation and has a couple of games to save their season.

“Our fourth side is also looking at finals, it’s just our second and third sides that aren’t in good positions, hopefully they can be saved.”

Dawson said they would look to stick with the same line ups, with the second side starting to find some form in recent weeks.

He said they had two really good wins and were keen to finish the second on a high.

The bottom two sides of each section will be relegated, along with the two lowest points scorers from across all the grades.

For the top side, Dawson said it’s about continuing on doing what they’ve done so well this season.

United’s ‘amazing’ start

By Tara Murray Western United coach Mark Torcaso wants his playing group to continue to keep a level head as they get into the second half of the A-League Women’s season.

Having exceeded all expectations in their debut season with nine wins from their first 10 matches, there’s plenty of excitement surrounding United.

Torcaso wasn’t keen to set expectations heading into the season. He said the start they’ve had has been pretty incredible and he’s not setting any limits on what they can achieve.

“It’s been pretty amazing to be honest,” he said. “I’m very proud of how fantastic the girls have been.

“The whole squad and their application. The results are starting at training, but we can’t get ahead of ourselves.

“We take each game and each week as it comes, it’s been so enjoyable.”

While many people have been surprised how a large amount of the group had stepped up from the National Premier League Women’s competition, Torcaso is not one of them.

Having coached a bulk of the group at Calder United, where they won several trophies, Torcaso expected good things from them.

“Those Calder girls who have come through with me, it has been amazing,” he said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling that these women each week keep going.

“They’ve exceeded my expectations. I knew they would adapt to it and they stuck with and were patient, whether they’ve played five minutes or almost every game.

“They’re good enough to play in this league.”

Many of the players have spoken about the Calder United culture and the impact that has brought to the group.

All the players are buying and the results are showing. On field, Hannah Keane has been the star, leading the golden boot award for the highest goal scorer.

Having been cut by Melbourne City at the last minute a few years ago, she’s been keen to make her mark.

“I knew Hannah had this quality,” Torcaso said. “I was surprised no one had picked her up and I had followed her progress since she was last in Australia.

“I kept track of her and said if I ever get to an A-League club, I would contact her as I wanted her to play for me.

Hannah Keane has been a star for United this season.

“She has so much more to give, the surprises are still to come.”

United’s early success has seen the club continue to attract good players in the midseason transfer window, Alana Beard, another to play under Torcaso at Calder, joined the club bringing plenty of experience, as did Danielle Steer, who was playing overseas.

Having lost Jessica McDonald back to America with her stint over, the arrivals came at the perfect time.

Torcaso said the pair would be important in the run home.

Another player Torcaso is hoping will play a big role in the run home is Matildas star Chloe Logarzo.

“Chloe has a bit of a foot niggle so she had to pull out of the Matildas camp. Hopefully she can continue her progress so she can be available for the world cup.

“Hopefully we’ll see her back on the field in the next few weeks.”

As for the second half of the season, nothing changes for Torcaso and the playing group despite being the hunted.

United was set to face Perth Glory on Saturday, after deadline.

“We want to keep level headed, keep challenging, keep on being a nuisance to the opposition side,” he said.

“I keep telling them to be annoying and focus on each week and each game.”

On Saturday, it was good results for both sides.

The section 1 side upset finals bound Keilor.

The match went down to the wire, with Melton 2 winning 87 (14)-81 (4).

The win has Melton in fifth position.

The section 2 side had a massive win against Whittlesea 3.

With three rink wins, Melton got the points 101 (17)-67 (1).

The result means that Melton will finish top no matter the result in the final round of the season.

Storm out of T20 contention Sydenham-Hillside’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association T20 campaign is over after a loss in the first round of the knockout stage of the competition.

The region round of the competition started on Tuesday night, with the final 16 teams split into groups of four.

The Sydenham-Hillside made it through the pool knockout stage, where it was drawn to face senior division side, the Druids in one of the first matches scheduled for this round.

The Storm won the toss and elected to bat on their home pitch. They were out for 128 on the final ball of the innings.

Stefon King top scored for the Storm with 36, in an innings which included three fours and one six.

Asela Rangana Dasanayaka Aluthge was the pick of the bowlers for the Druids, taking two wickets.

After losing an early wicket, the Druids steadied and were able to chase down the runs with more than four overs remaining.

Dasanayaka Aluthge top scored with 43 off 25 balls. He hit four fours and two sixes.

Muhammad Sajawal took 2-17 off his three overs for the Storm.

The Druids’ opponent in the next round is yet to be decided.

Deer Park was set to host Sunshine in the other game of the pool on Thursday night.

Wet weather prevented the game going ahead, with it to be rescheduled.

PEGS fate in the competition is also undecided.

West Coburg and PEGS were set to face each other on Tuesday night, but the game was cancelled due to the ground being wet.

The winner of that match will play Jacana, which accounted for Sunbury.

Werribee Centrals advanced with a win against Gellibrand and will now face Maribyrnong Park St Marys which beat Sanctuary Lakes.

The remaining games are scheduled to be played within the next week.

The next round of the competition is scheduled for February 14.
