Plea for park fair go When two-and-a-half-year-old Bailey Minotti asks why his dad can’t come with him to his favourite park, his mother, Cait, doesn’t know how to respond. Cait said parks are meant to be a “family thing” but not all playgrounds in Wyndham are inclusive of the different abilities of community members. “He just keeps asking me, ‘When can daddy come … I wanna show daddy,’ and I’m like ‘You can’t,” she said. ’ “But [to] try explaining to him why daddy can’t come, it’s not an easy thing. “He sees other kids and he says ‘But their

daddy can come’ and it just shouldn’t be this way. He has a point, if their daddy can come to the park, why can’t his?” Presidents Park in Wyndham Vale is Bailey’s “absolute favourite”, according to Cait. But with her husband Stuart in a wheelchair and a baby in a pram, the Tarneit resident believes council should construct paths that lead to the equipment to make the area more accessible. “A path that leads you to the fence, and then you can look over a fence, doesn’t make a park wheelchair accessible,” she said. “He needs to be able to get up close, to be able to play and interact with his son, and he can’t, cause there’s tan bark everywhere. “They don’t see it from a wheelchair

user’s perspective, and actually see that that is pointless.” A spokesperson from Wyndham council said the council was currently in the early stages of delivering the short-term priorities of the Presidents Park Master Plan. “The Presidents Park Master Plan recommends the future redevelopment of the play area at Presidents Parks to a Regional All Abilities Play Space,” the spokesperson said. “Access for all will be front of mind in the future design of the space and community consultation will be undertaken to inform and guide the project. “The key elements identified as short-term

priorities include pathway connections, car parking improvements, community event space improvements and the Regional All Abilities play space.” Cait acknowledges that there are some accessible parks in the community, but says they’re “not as common as they should be”. “In today’s society, it shouldn’t be an afterthought, we shouldn’t be having to campaign for this, it should just be a natural thing that we’re making parks more accessible to everybody,” she said. “We should be able to just go to any playground, just like anybody else really, we shouldn’t have to go and check it out first and make sure daddy can come.”

Parking boost at Tarneit station New car parking is now available for commuter use at Tarneit Railway Station- one of the state’s busiest stations. An additional 500 parking spaces have been created, taking the total number of car spaces to 1500. “A 50 per cent increase in parking capacity at Tarneit station is a fantastic result and these additional spaces will ease the parking pain experienced by our community and improve transport connections in the west,“ Tarneit

MP Sarah Connolly said. A new bus interchange will also be constructed as part of the upgrades to Tarneit station, in an effort to double the number of bus bays and allow more bus services to run more often. Construction is set to begin in late 2022, with the new bus interchange opening to commuters late next year. The City of Wyndham is one of Australia’s fastest growing communities and Tarneit

station is the state’s busiest V/Line station outside of Southern Cross, with over 1.24 million commuters using the station in 2019 (pre-COVID). “The opening of the new Tarneit station car park will transform travel for one of Australia’s fastest growing communities,” Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll said. “More local residents will be able to find a park and connect to public transport.” The funding for the upgrades was delivered

as part of the state government’s Car Parks for Commuters program which aims to deliver new and upgraded car parks across the state. At Wyndham Vale station, 380 new and upgraded spaces will be constructed, boosting parking availability by about 40 per cent. To help commuters feel safer when travelling, new bicycle parking facilities, improved lighting and CCTV will also be delivered as part of the project. Details: carparks.vic.gov.au.

A slice of Werribee history on show The exhibition celebrating 145 years of Werribee Mansion is open for public viewing. Customer service officer Jenny Hanson said the exhibition was “a bit like a time capsule” and highlighted how Werribee Mansion had been a “good gathering place” for many residents. “It consists of all of the past events that we’ve had, there’s also historic information, there’s timelines, there’s information about conservation of the house,” Ms Hanson said.

“We’ve basically tried to cover the 145 years and all the different things that have happened in that time.” The exhibition also features personal stories, memories and photos from people who had visited the mansion. Ms Hanson said the submissions came from “all over the place” and shared stories from people across the state. “It showed the diversity, it showed the amazing experiences we’ve been able to create

for people,” she said. “It’s a real community hub from what I’ve gathered by all the photos, it brings people from all walks of life, for all different reasons. “It’s a place for people to celebrate and enjoy themselves and in a way, [the exhibition] is kind of thanking them, and it’s a celebration of all of us.” Ms Hanson said the exhibition will run until at least the end of the year at Werribee Mansion.

Wyndham council has reaffirmed its support for national EveryAge Counts campaign, that seeks to end ageism. As part of the campaign, council affirms the importance of creating a community where every person is valued, connected and respected regardless of age. Councillors took the pledge to stand for a world without ageism where all people of all ages are valued and respected and their contributions are acknowledged, to commit to speaking out and taking action to ensure older people can participate on equal terms with others in all aspects of life. Wyndham council’s welcoming city portfolio holder, Cr Jennie Barrera, said this important campaign recognises that ageism can negatively impact a person’s life and limit their participation in community life. “When someone is judged negatively for being an older person, it can affect their job prospects, confidence, health, quality of life and control over their life decisions,” she said. Mayor Peter Maynard, said the city’s population of people aged 65 years and over is forecast to grow by 260 per cent. “That means in 2041 we’re expecting more than 62,000 people to be aged over 65,” he said. “This growth and the national aged care reforms – aimed to help people remain in their homes longer – means its key that council helps older people to make informed choices about living their best life.” Details: https://www.everyagecounts. org.au

Help secure arts centre funding Wyndham council is asking residents to help campaign for a new community and performing arts centre in the municipality in the lead up to the November state election. In a video posted to Facebook, council called on residents to lobby candidates to secure funding for the centre. “This area is today home to 34,922 people, it sounds like a lot, but it will soon be even greater,” mayor Peter Maynard said. “By 2040, this corridor will be home to a whooping 87,126 people. “With great growth, comes the need to invest in the services and infrastructure for the people that choose to call this area home, from now and into the future.”

Councillor Maynard told Star Weekly he had met or offered to meet all candidates running for election across Wyndham to advocate on behalf of all the needs of the municipality’s residents. “We’re calling on all candidates to commit to help fund new infrastructure for our growing community, including $20 million for The Black Forest Road North Community and Performing Arts Centre in Wyndham Vale,” he said. “The new building will include a new community centre, kindergarten services, maternal and child health services, a library and a performing arts centre.” Cr Maynard said council would continue

advocating to all candidates to “ensure we see the investment we deserve”. “We want commitments towards projects that will boost job opportunities and access, while bolstering our local economy,” he said. “We need to build better transport connections making it easier to move around Wyndham. “We also need support through education, and to build a stronger sense of community through sport and community infrastructure.”

Flaming hot fun at CFA If you have a burning question for the Truganina Fire Brigade, its community open day is the perfect opportunity to fire away. Members of the brigade will work alongside emergency responders, and run scenarios and demonstrations, activities for kids, and refreshments on Sunday, October 23. Brigade community safety co-ordinator and multicultural liaison Michele Abbott said the community would be able to see how the various groups worked together. “Our relationship with the community is vital, so that they learn we are there to help, especially when quite often when they first meet us it is in an emergency situation,” Ms Abbott said. “Getting to know us in a more relaxed environment on an open day or other community event can help to build that trust.”

The Truganina Brigade comprises of volunteer members, who will discuss with residents the importance of fire safety. “Ambulance Vic personnel will be teaching attendees how to perform CPR, St John members will be demonstrating some basic first aid and our VicPol members will be talking about community safety,” Ms Abbott said. “SES [will talk] about being safe during storm events, DELWP [Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning], Parks Vic and Wyndham council will be on hand to discuss controlled burns and also general burning restrictions in Wyndham.” A raffle and barbecue will also be available at the event, which will take place at the Truganina Fire Brigade from 10am-3pm. Road safety call after dam crash Raeleen Borg estimates it was about 4pm when she first heard the voice. It was Monday, September 26, and the Mount Cottrell resident was at her home on Sewells Road when a noise coming from her yard caught her attention. “I go outside and there’s this young girl in hysterics, just drenched in water, and I asked her ‘where did you come from?’, and she said ‘out of your dam’, Ms Borg said. “I said [to her], ‘out of my dam?’ and she said, ‘yeah, there’s a car in your dam’.” Ms Borg said the girl, who appeared to be in her twenties, was shaken and inconsolable. “It was terrible just to see her the way she was, in a panic, thinking she was going to drown in the dam,” she said. “We didn’t even hear her, and she said she had been calling out for help for ages.” Ms Borg said the girl told her she had been driving down one side of Sewells Road, when she saw another car coming the opposite way. “She thought he wasn’t going to move so she veered off the side of the road … ended up in my property and then landed in the dam,” she said. Sewells Road is a narrow sealed road, with gravel on either side. Two cars attempting to use the road at the same time are forced to move to the side, half on the gravel, to make way for one another. Ms Borg said the road also had deep potholes which are often camouflaged by dirt. Ms Borg said she’d been complaining to Wyndham council that someone was going to be injured on the road unless it was fixed, but her complaints weren’t rectified. “Every single road that’s around here, is just terrible [because of] the amount of traffic that comes through this area now, they don’t think before releasing the land to developers,” she said.

Ms Borg said that if the dam had been full, the driver could have drowned.

Council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said a number of roads in the area had been impacted by increased traffic volumes from surrounding developments. “Sewells Road is graded every six weeks, however Wyndham City officers are currently re-evaluating the schedule to manage road defects in a more timely manner,” Mr Thorpe said. “Following discussions with a resident from

Sewells Road who advised Wyndham City of a recent incident, officers have requested a safety audit be conducted to inform us of any interim measures that can be put in place to assist with traffic in the area. “This may include a reduction of the speed limit or additional advanced warning signage.” Mr Thorpe said there were currently no plans to upgrade Sewells Road to a full width pavement, as the area is subject to future

development which would include a series of road construction projects. Mr Borg said advocating for better roads sometimes felt pointless. “It’s like a broken record,” she said. “If something were to happen to her, I would have been traumatised, if we found her body. “I just want these road fixed, because I don’t want to see anyone hurt.”

Kicking out loneliness Peter Cullen has always wanted to do something meaningful with his life. The Werribee resident is the founder of Reclink Australia, a sport and recreation program which has benefited hundreds of disadvantaged Australians. Mr Cullen said he truly believes there’s a real help through community. “If we can include the unincluded, it brings home the power of inclusion and the power of validation through people being invited and people being able to participate,” he said. “It’s just very powerful in people’s lives.” To commemorate the 30-year anniversay of Reclink, the organisation is releasing a book titled ‘The Power of Sport’, full of contributions

from former and current Reclink participants. “I think it it’s a real education in understanding the power of sport, like the title suggests,” Mr Cullen said. “When I started Reclink, I saw people in deep isolation in the community. There’s a lot that stops people from drowning, but not a lot that helps people to swimming, and the desire was to take people from that deep isolation. “Thirty years later, with the impact of isolation through COVID, everybody’s talking about how it has affected people. “Community sport is a great way to take people away from that.” Details: https://reclink.org/about/news/ power-football-pre-orders-open-now

Police charged three teenagers following an assault in Hoppers Crossing. Authorities were called to a shopping complex on Heaths Road after reports of a group of youths fighting about 5.40pm on Thursday, October 6. A 14-year-old boy was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Calls for more snake warnings A resident is calling on Wyndham council to display better signage at known snake hot spots to warn residents of the potential risks. Wyndham Vale resident Dean Marks was recently using Presidents Park when he noticed a Tiger Snake, and became concerned at the lack of adequate signage. “We have a known risk so as a council they should as much as is possible and reasonable, mitigate such risk,” he said. “We have a great many in our communities that are infirm or disabled. It may be eyesight, age, an ambulatory movement issue, the person may be on a walking aid or wheelchair.

So they [should] advise and clearly mark.” Mr Marks said many Australians know we have venomous creatures that come out of hibernation in the springtime, but many migrants in the municipality may be unaware. “The west has changed a great deal in the past 30 years and the natural habitats for these creatures has been systematically destroyed and sold off to developers for new housing,” he said. “The development projects push these creatures into smaller and smaller areas.” Mr Marks said there are “simple” things the council can do to make the area safer

“Things like signage and advising people on the council website can assist in making people aware. “They can then make a choice … as to which areas of the park are safe to run your pups off leash and what times are better than others and also can guide people to understand what to do if they are bitten, that they are not permitted to indiscriminately kill wildlife.” A Wyndham council spokesperson said the council’s open spaces team works hard to ensure parks and open spaces are well maintained to prevent and reduce snake incidents.

“Parks are regularly mowed and kept tidy, so snakes are less likely to frequent the area,” the spokesperson said. “Council has signs located in areas where snakes have been known to frequent to remind residents to keep an eye out and be vigilant when walking in grass and open spaces during the warmer months. “Wyndham City has information on snakes and what to do if you see one on our website in over 60 languages.” Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au search?query=snakes

Make a splash at Werribee Outdoor Pool A refreshed Werribee Outdoor Pool has officially opened for residents to enjoy during the warm season’s swimmingly good weather. The space consists of an eight lane 50-metre heated pool, a leisure pool with water play features and shade shelters and an outdoor barbecue area for groups to make use of. A kiosk is also open for residents to purchase snacks and treats. A Wyndham council spokesperson said a number of upgrades to beautify the space had taken place over the off-season between May and September. “[This includes] resurfacing the concourse to create a non-slip and decorative surface,” the spokesperson said.

“The pool’s shades and sails have also undergone refurbishment and a deep clean. “We encourage all residents to make the most of summer and this much-loved facility in the heart of Wyndham.” A ‘Watch Around Water’ policy applies at the pool, which relates to parental/guardian supervision of children and is available to read on the website. Early day stay help for families A new Early Parenting Day Stay program will launch in North Tarneit in a joint partnership by Tweddle Child & Family Health Service and the Wyndham council. The Wyndham Day Stay Program will operate weekly for families with babies up to 12 months of age at the new Bembit Bag-rook Community Centre. “New parents face many challenges, and one of them doesn’t have to be travelling long distances to get the support they need. We’re thrilled to partner with Tweddle, and we know their support will have a lasting positive impact

on the lives of mothers, fathers and children,” Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard, said. The program offers additional guidance around sleep and settling, feeding, attachment and bonding, establishing routines, mental health and developmental ages and stages. Egg producers fear shell shocks If there’s ever been a time third generation egg farmer Danyel Cucinotta has been worried for the future of the industry, it’s right now. The Werribee South farmer runs L.T’s Egg Farm with her sister, and the pair are responsible for the care of about 30,000 chickens. “We mostly service our own Wyndham community. We do quite a bit in the western suburbs of Melbourne, cafes, delis, fruiterers [and] butchers,” Ms Cucinota said. It’s estimated by not-for-profit group Australian Eggs that the nation consumes about 18 million eggs a day, and Ms Cucinotta says most of these eggs are domestically produced. “The next time you’re out for brunch at a cafe and you order eggs, you’re supporting local farmers,” she said. But with the ever present risk of Avian Influenza, biosecurity fears, and the reviews of the Animal Welfare Legislation, Ms Cucinotta said there are many factors that threaten to impact the supply of eggs. “Avian Influenza is carried by migratory birds and as you can imagine, because we don’t have border patrol for birds, and as they migrate, they could be carrying disease with them,” she said. “Birds fly over certain farms, they defecate, we might step in poo and then we go into a shed and take Avian Influenza in, and wipe out our whole flock. “In Werribee South because we have such beautiful parkland across from us, as lovely as it is, it creates a huge biosecurity risk for us, we’ve gotta be really careful about the people we let on our farm, the way we let people on our farm and the kinds of biosecurity rules we use.” But right now, Ms Cucinotta said the “big risk” for the industry is the outcome of the

review of the Animal Welfare Legislation. “The standards and guidelines for poultry have been released on a national level as a recommendation, and there is concern of a phase out of cages, and that would be extremely problematic,” she said. A Department of Agriculture spokesperson said the department would be phasing out conventional ‘battery’ cages, the standards would allow the use of larger, furnished cages that provide welfare improvements, including a nest area, scratch area, perch and foraging material. About 50 per cent of egg production in Australia is in cage systems, Ms Cucinotta said, but they aren’t always the harmful, cramped cages people might envision. “Cage systems are not the cages that existed in the’ 80s that you see on social media, cage systems have come such a long way,” she said. “It’s really important because it provides better biosecurity, it provides us with consistent sustainable eggs, so when it’s winter and free range birds stop playing we still have the ability to access a steady flow of sustainable eggs because we have cage environmental sheds. “We can provide a safe protein at a lower cost [to the consumer] essentially.” There are some practices the farm enacts to keep their chickens in egg-cellent condition. “We have foot maps at every entry into our shed, which has certain chemicals on there that ideally kill off any bugs or debris that they’re walking in with,” Ms Cucinotta said. “Our staff have specific uniform that’s only used when they’re on our farm [and] we have washing stations. “We check our birds twice a day, checking their overall health and wellbeing of a chicken daily is important.” Sisters Danyel Cucinotta and Renay Ahmed.

Libs commit to reserve upgrade The Goddard Street Reserve sporting fields will undergo a $700,000 upgrade, if the Liberal and National parties are successful at the state election in November. The Liberal party said the commitment would fund the installation of flood lighting for the oval to allow for Wyndham Suns Football Netball Club to extend their game time and training into the evenings. Wyndham Suns Football Netball Club president Graeme Clarke welcomed the proposed funding and said the lights would have many benefits.

“When daylight savings finishes in April, it suddenly gets dark at five o’clock and not being able to supply a location for different teams to train, we don’t want to have them train over Christmas and not be able to train again,” he said. “We want to try and develop female participation in sports, we have a pretty diverse community in the area and we need need to engage more with the community to make sure it’s a place that they want to come to.” Mr Clarke said he believed local sporting clubs were “100 per cent” neglected by all

levels of government during election time. “There’s a perception I suppose that you’re on the bottom of the list for anything,” he said. “All the things most other clubs have got, when you ask for them they’re hard to get because the easy response is ‘you’re less than ten years old, the facilities are still new’. Liberal candidate for Tarneit, Preet Singh, said the money would be an excellent commitment for the Tarneit community. “Tarneit has grown rapidly and is expected to continue at this pace well into the future,

these facilities are needed now and will service those future residents,” Mr Singh said. “Our team will work with the community to provide better opportunities for players of all ages.” The funding will also go towards the development of a new turf wicket, aimed at providing the Tarneit Central Cricket Club the opportunity to bring in more players and further training for national and international competitions.

Trick or treat for charity When Maria Lodola-Price began decorating her house in Manor Lakes for Halloween, people would flock to her door to get a glimpse of the spooky set up. The interest from other people prompted Ms Lodola-Price to set up a community Halloween event and since beginning to fundraise in 2016, has managed to raise over $20,000 for charity. “There will be lots of spooky Halloween decorations, with animatronics, lighting and sound effects, candy for the kids and people dressed in costume that they can take photos with,” Ms Lodola-Price said. “We set up the graveyard display in Leichardt Drive Park, with fake coffins and gravestones, there’s a costume contest booth for people, and for pets, with a professional photographer to take photos of all the entrants and there’s lots of great prizes to be won. “We’ll have food trucks, including a pizza truck, burgers and fries, someone selling

Halloween-themed cookies, fair floss and a coffee van with all food vendors donating 10 per cent of their sales on the night to Starlight Children’s Foundation.” The nonprofit organisation provides gifts and games to hospitalised children, a cause Ms Lodola-Price cares deeply about. “Having in grown up in Canada, Halloween for us is just a night about having fun,” she said. “There’s loads of kids out there who are seriously ill and don’t necessarily get a lot of fun in their day, Starlight Children’s Foundation tries to bring a bit of fun back to those kids in hospital.” Entry is a gold coin donation, and the event will run on Halloween night on Dalrymple Boulevard between Amadeus Street and Ellenborough Cresent, approximately 500m from the Manor Lakes Community Learning Centre. Community centre now open in growing Tarneit A new community centre built to cater Tarneit’s growing community has been opened by the state government. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard joined Local Government Minister Melissa Horne and Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly to officially opened the new Bembit Bag-rook Community Centre on October 5. “Tarneit is one of our fastest growing communities, with the population forecast to more than double in the next 20 years,” Councillor Maynard said. “Our proactive delivery of new community centres with critical health and education services in high-growth areas is a major priority and achievement for our city.” The $20.9 million centre will offer a range of community, health and educational services, programs, and activities for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, including kindergarten and maternal child health services. Council said not-for-profit organisation Bestchance, which will seek to deliver quality education, care and therapy services for children, will manage the centre. Bembit Bag-rook will also include a family area, as an outdoor barbeque area, basketball and netball courts and a playground. “It’s exciting that the Tarneit community now has a new space for sport, recreation and family support services, that will be enjoyed for generations,” Ms Connolly said. The Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation worked with Wyndham council to name the Centre, chosing “Bembit” which means flower in the Bunurong language and “Bag-rook” meaning. women. by state government investments worth $5 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund and Building Blocks Grants program, the project is one of 30 projects the state government has funded with Wyndham council.

Road funding Community groups wanting to address road safety issues in their local areas can now apply for a state government grant. The Transport Accident Commission Community Road Safety Grant Program provides grants of up to $30,000 to not-for-profit groups, schools and other community organisations to develop and implement road safety projects. The program comprises of two rounds per year and encourages groups to work closely with their local communities to develop solutions to address road safety issues, on projects that align with the Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2021-30. The state government said communities often have unique road safety needs, and local groups can be well-placed to identify these specific problems and implement solutions. “The TAC Community Road Safety Grant Program provides an opportunity for groups and organisations to implement positive changes and address specific road safety issues affecting their communities,” Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll said. As the year has progressed, 36 pedestrians have lost their lives on Victorian roads, up from 20 at this time in 2021. In order to address this issue, the state government hopes the program will prioritise projects that focus on protecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Applications for the second round of the 2022 TAC Community Road Safety Grant Program will close on November 9. Repurposing for a better world In the heart of Whittlesea garbage is being given a new life and waste destined for landfill has been given a purpose, as Holly McGuinness discovers.

n Epping company is leading the charge on sustainable practices by repurposing typically non-reusable materials in a bid to reduce waste and pollution. RepurposeIT was founded by George Hatzimanolis in 2015 with the aim of finding new uses for used construction and demolition materials. RepurposeIT estimates it recycles more than 500,000 tonnes of waste a year, saving about 84,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Recently, RepurposeIT has been working with Major Roads Projects Victoria on the M80 Ring Road and North-East Link. “We were able to take contaminated soil, repurpose some of that by washing it, then add that sand with cement and supply it back to the project as backfill for some electrical conduits,” Mr Hatzimanolis says. “That is a full circular economy-type solution.” The company has also recently partnered with Whittlesea, Hume, Manningham and Moreland councils to accept compostable materials that end up in FOGO bins (Food

to the rest of the world and what they’re doing about this issue, but to start to lead now and to be in a country that’s really investing in new technology and in new startups,” Mr Hatzimanolis says. Swinburne University of Technology professor of geotechnical engineering Rahul Arulrajah has worked alongside RepurposeIT to do just that. Professor Arulrajah has helped the company to identify innovative ways to move away from using virgin materials and resources drawn from quarries. “There’s thousands of quarries in Victoria, the initiative is to reduce the environmental impact of having new quarries,” Professor Arulrajah says. “If you can divert them from landfills and use them for a higher value use, such as roads

or footpaths, which the RepurposeIT products are ideal for, then you’re very much finding the hole for these products. “If you reduce the need for quarry materials, you reduce the environmental impact.” Professor Arulrajah has concerns that if mining and quarry practices continue, and renewable practices aren’t seriously invested in, then there’s a risk for significant environmental scarring. “In the end you’d have a scarring of the land and what normally happens is they try to make use of the quarry and potentially have to fill it up, it’s land that cant be used anymore,” he says. “It affects the vegetation, the groundwater seeps in and the water could be contaminated.” He says there is a push to find new ways to use reclaimed products after China placed a

complete ban on the importation of Australian solid waste in 2021, following on from tough restrictions introduced in 2017. Mr Hatzimanolis says he hopes to take RepurposeIT’s facility “off the grid” within the next few years. The plan is to use a method called anaerobic digestion to break down biodegradable materials, including food waste, and convert them into fuels that can power the facility. “We’ll use that to digest and capture the gas that would otherwise be emitted to the atmosphere, we capture that gas and convert it to renewable energy,” Mr Hatzimanolis says. “This is an energy source that runs through a converter and produces electricity … That’ll be enough to take us off the grid, which is something that we’re striving towards in the next couple of years.”

“Now we’re playing catch up, we have to change because the infrastructure that we build in the future is definitely not going to be of the same resources that we’ve been using in the past.” Mr Hatzimanolis believes Australia needs to invest in research and development to build a circular economy. “It’s the only economy that’s sustainable,” he says. Due to Australia’s rich resources, he believes the country has fallen behind in research in this sector, in comparison to European countries such as the United Kingdom, Denmark or Sweden. He says these countries have been pioneering research as they’ve dealt with the challenges around switching to renewables. “We’ve got an opportunity not just to look

Now the range has been topped up with petrol / electric hybrids. Kia’s only seven-seat sports utility vehicle comes in the top GT-Line specification only, the straight hybrid version in front or all-wheel drive guise, while the hero model is a plug-in electric hybrid vehicle. The common-or-garden hybrid Sorento kicks off the range with the front-wheel-drive variant selling for $66,750 before on-road costs. The all-wheel-drive version carries a $3000 premium, pushing the price up to $69,750. The plug-in hybrid Sorento is on sale from $80,330 before on-roads. More spacious, more versatile with class-leading innovations wrapped in finely tailored style, says the maker, the new Sorento not only is the most high-tech Kia car ever made, but also leads the way in SUV design.

Styling While retaining much of the Sorento family physical features, the Hybrid has evolved with a new interpretation of the trademark ‘tiger nose’ grille, with a wider shape wrapping around the integrated LED headlights on each side. This assertive nose is complemented by a wider lower air intake, incorporating wing-shaped air curtains to channel air around the car.

Interior Quilted Nappa leather appointed seats (front heated and ventilated) set the theme for a cabin of quality materials and craftsmanship. Connectivity is front and centre with a 10.25-inch colour multimedia touchscreen linked to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 7-inch LCD instrument display carries range of system info. The position of the touch screen on the centre dash of the test car had its problems, with air-con controls underneath easy to catch accidentally while resting the palm on working the screen. Audio is handled by a six-speaker system, while dual-zone air-conditioning keeps occupants in relative comfort. Customising is the name of the game with a 10.25-inch full colour touchscreen atop the centre console, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster directly in front of the driver who also has a colour head-up display, including speedo and speed limits on the windscreen. The touchscreen comes up with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity, satellite navigation details, including a sharp map display, and access to the 12-speaker Bose audio.

The Sorento Hybrid is powered by Kia’s 132 kW / 265 Nm four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine combined with a 44 kW / 264 Nm electric motor, charging a 1kWh lithium-ion battery situated under the boot floor. Power is put to ground via a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission and constant all-wheel drive.

Giants’ tough weekend By Tara Murray It was a tough weekend for the Werribee Giants on the diamond in the Baseball Victoria Summer League division 2. After a first up win, the Giants found the going tougher on Sunday against Ormond Glenhuntly. In a low scoring game, Ormond Huntley won 3-0. Giants’ president David Bishop-Worn said it was a pretty disappointing result for the side. “Our bats didn’t fire unfortunately,” he said. “We also made a couple of errors which resulted in the opposition scoring runs. “We’ll have more of a focus on batting this week and just try and bounce back for next week.” Bishop-Worn said Trent Pantalleresco pitched well before being relieved by youngster Addison Bishop-Worn He said for Addison to be pitching in the first side, while still playing under-18s was a really good effort. The Giants are one of five teams with one win after the first two rounds. The Giants men’s sides struggled across all divisions on the weekend, with all suffering losses. It was a better weekend for the women’s team which beat the Mitchell Majors, 14-5. They have won both their matches so far. “They are improving week by week and the extra training sessions they are doing is working,” Bishop-Worn said. “They are a great bunch of girls” The women’s side this week faces the Geelong Baycats, while the men’s side is at home to Doncaster.

Mixed results in Churches Players in the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association were among the rare ones to get on the pitch on Saturday. As heavy rain left many other competitions with no choice but to cancel their rounds for a second straight week, the Churches competition was spared the pain. In the E.Cocks/B.Haining Shield, Tarneit Central split their two matches. The Tarneit Central Red side beat United Tarneit. Central made 7-151 off their 35 overs. Jagmeet Mangat and Yasasa Weerasinghe took two wickets each. The match went down to the wire, with United Tarneit bowled out for 141. Garry Bandara top scored with 46. Williams Landing beat Tarneit Central Blue. Williams Landing made a massive 6-263 from their 35 overs with contributions throughout the order. In other matches, Truganina beat the Brimbank Strikers, bowling them out 18 runs short of victory. Truganina made 7-168 before restricting the Strikers to 151. New coach has Point Cook players aiming high New Point Cook Carmine Conte is aiming high in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3. After a disappointing 2021-22 season when the side finished second bottom, the side had changed a number of things with the hopes of turning things around. Conte returns to the club that he coached when they were based in Wyndham to lead the club in a new chapter. “It’s been harder than I expected after not doing it for so long,” he said. “But we’re in for the long haul and we’ll keep pushing. “As a club we have had a phenomenal pre-season where we have built on a great culture with developing an exciting and talented group of players throughout all grades. “We are thrilled with the continued development that our young talent has shown, along with a few strong additions to the squad as we look to push for success in all competitions.” Conte said they were getting more than 50 people at training having made a strong

focus on that. He said there was a group of eight or nine people helping him out with the coaching. Conte said they would have a different looking side to last season. “We’ve finished recruiting and we’re happy with what we have achieved,” he said. “We’ve got a young fellow [Joshua Van Zyl] from South Africa who is the most dedicated cricketer that I’ve seen. “He’s showing a lot of talent in the nets. “Harry Singh played for us a few years ago and after playing in premier cricket is coming back to us. “We have an Englishman [Ross Martin] who has come across and is my assistant coach.” Conte said there were a few juniors who hadn’t played for a few years that had returned to the club including David Hicks. In a pleasing sign, a couple of young players are on the fringe of playing first XI cricket. Conte said they had high expectations this season. “The squad is looking really good,” he said.

“We want to make finals and win it all. We will take it one week and a time.” Point Cook is hoping it will finally get its chance to take to the field on Saturday after the first two weekends were called off due to heavy rain impacting grounds. Strong athletics start By Tara Murray Athletes hit the track in the opening round of the Athletics Victoria Shield League on Saturday. The start of the new season saw a return to the premier division for Western Athletics, which claimed the division 1 shield last season. Western Athletics sit fourth after the first round on 3237 points, with Essendon, Diamond Valley and Eaglehawk ahead of them. Western Athletics president Peter Cashin said it was pretty exciting to get back out there, with many athletes making their debut. He said they were originally not sure what was going to happen with the weather, but it turned out to be a nice day. “We had some personal bests, some national qualifiers first up,” he said. “There were also some club records which we were happy about as it’s a new season. It bodes well for the rest of the season.” Cashin said their focus this season was on making sure they got the best out of their athletes. He said if they could make the finals play off, which is for the top five clubs, it would be amazing. Kyle Lobo, Steven Morgan and Ethan Sneyders all made their AVSL debuts. The under-16 men came second overall in their age group. A number of athletes achieved top five results. Kate Siviour finished first in the open women’s three kilometre walk, while in the same age group Rebekah Sutton was first in the

shot and third in the hammer throw. In the female under-20 age group, Jade Chitty finished second in the three kilometre walk, while Charlotte Drake finished third in the 1500 metres. Emily Morgan finished first in the under-18 female javelin, while Lucy Cleveland finished fourth in the under-16 400 metres and Liz Hall was fourth in the 1500 metres, while Tahnee Hutchison finished fifth in the under-14 100 metres. On the male side of things, Brayden Portelli finished first in the open 100 metres and Brandon Muscat finished first in the 1500 metres. In the over-40s, Stan Peska finished first in the discus and third in the javelin. In the men’s under-20, Bol Mathieu finished first in the javelin and third in the high jump, while in the under-18s Jaydon Nti finished first in the 100 metres and Jeremy Nti finished third in the same event. Xander Byrne finished first in the 110 metre hurdles. In other results, Jeeva Vijayagopal finished first in the 400 metres, third in the 100 metres and fourth in the long jump in the under-16s, while Matthew Musarra finished third in the 1500 metres, Ethan Sneyders finished fourth in the 400 metres and the javelin and Armeet Dhaliwal finished fifth in the 1500 metres in the same age group. Nelson Banigo finished second in the 100 metres in the under-14s.

Werribee’s hopes of a second straight win to start the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Competition is on hold for at least another week. Unlike the majority of the men’s competitions that didn’t go ahead on the weekend after heavy rain left many grounds unplayable, the women’s competition pushed ahead, having also gone ahead the previous weekend. In the Shield 3 T20 competition, two of the four matches went ahead with grounds in Melbourne’s north-west among those the most heavily hit by rain during the week. Werrribee’s match against Craigieburn was one of the two that didn’t go ahead with the match abandoned. The two teams, that both won in round one, share points with the match declared a draw. It was the same result in the Sydenham-Hillside and Ballarat Women’s (2) match. In the matches that went ahead, Coburg and Melton Centrals were the winners. Coburg easily accounted for Keilor. The Blues were sent in and were bowled out for 62 with a ball remaining. Noura Abdul Qader top scored with 15 at the top of the order. Maria Nativo top took 4-6 off her four overs. Coburg finished 1-64 in reply. Melton Centrals had little trouble against Clifton Hill (2). Clifton Hill made 1-83 off their overs with Rebecca Bonnici the wicket taker for Centrals. Centrals finished 1-85 in reply hitting the winning runs with four balls remaining after losing an early wicket. This Sunday, Werribee is set to face Ballarat (2) at Chirnside Park in Werribee. Sydenham-Hillside is set to host Clifton Hill (2), while Melton Centrals is set to face Keilor and Coburg (2) is set to play Craigieburn. Cats full of confidence for a successful season Confidence is abuzz at Hoppers Crossing for the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west season. The Cats have been one of the big movers in the off season, with several new players to step into their top side. One of them is new captain-coach Simon Lambert who is excited by the upcoming season. “It’s the strongest position the club has been in for a few years,” he said. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the amount of depth at the club and the facilities. “We have a lot of good cricketers at the club and we wanted to keep what we have and add a few more. “Hopefully we can get the results on the board.” Lambert said they had about 70 players attend training sessions across all grades which is a positive sign. He said from a first XI perspective there

would be five or six new players in the side this season. “We were expecting to get in some quality players, two or three, but five or six is a bit more than we expected,” he said. “We’re looking forward to what they will do. They will all be welcomed additions and add some depth to our second side and our third and fourths sides will be stronger. Former first class batsman Shijit Chandran joins the club, while English wicketkeeper-bats Alex Bone have both come across. Gurpreet Singh and Ed Common both turned up to training after moving to the area and will be handy inclusions to the side. Lambert said there was a lot of talent among the squad. “We have five spinners and it’s one of the best spinning attacks I’ve seen in my time,” he said. “We have nine bowlers and nine or 10 batters. We’ll be very competitive.” With the influx of players and more depth,

Lambert and the club are keen to return to finals for the first time since the 2015-16 season. “If we put everything together on the field, we will be hard to beat,” he said. “We’re aiming for finals.” The Cats will be hoping to get under way this Saturday after the two first weekends were cancelled due to wet weather. The association has changed the fixture to ensure no matches are lost due to the delayed start to the season. The round two two-dayer will become a one-dayer starting on October 22, while round one will be played as a one-dayer this Saturday. Speaking before the decision was made, Lambert had said he was hoping to see that would be the case. The Cats will face Yarraville this Saturday, while Werribee will play Spotswood. Sports shorts FV West Point has appointed Tom Petreski as coach for next year’s FV state league 5 west season. Petrski spent most of last season in a player-coach role where he showed passion, dedication and commitment to the club and playing group all throughout the season. West Point finished this year in sixth spot, winning half their games. The club is expected to start pre-season next month.

Bowls The Bowls Victoria weekend pennant season is set to get underway this weekend. Werribee is playing in division 2, section 1 alongside Hoppers. Hoppers will start its season against Yarraville Footscray 3, while Werribee will play Deer Park 2. Altona Sports, Altona 2 and Melton 2 are the other teams in that section. Werribee’s second side is in division 3 and its third and fourth are both in division 4. Point Cook’s top side is in division 4 and Mt Cottrell’s top side is in division 5.

First up loss for United Western United’s A-League Men’s title defence got off to a less than ideal start on Friday night against Melbourne City. In a rematch of last season’s grand final, City was able to get some revenge against United coming away with a 2-1 win. United took to the field with 10 of the 11 players who started in the grand final, with James Troisi completing the line up in his United debut. Aleksandar Prijovic missed the game after an interrupted pre-season. United dominated the contest for the first 10 minutes, before City started to get into the game. They would open the scoring just before half time through an own goal. Star striker Jamie Maclaren doubled the lead in the 59th minute. United got one back in injury time through Nicholas Milanovic but it was too little, too late. United coach John Aloisi admitted post game that it wasn’t their best performance.

“We were second best overall,” he said. “We started the game really well … the first 10 minutes I thought we were good and we created a clear chance, weren’t able to put away and they got a lift when Leo [Larcoix] caught dribbling the ball in an area he normally wouldn’t. “After that they got on top of us.” Aloisi said they were better in the second half and started to win a bit more of the ball. But it didn’t result in converting on the scoreboard. “We came out and started to do a little bit more control with the ball and then we give away another goal, which was really unlike us, after that we were chasing a little bit,” he said. “There was some good signs in the second half, even though not at our best we were still able to come back into the game. “It’s a pity we gave away that second goal, if we didn’t we thought we would still get chances which we did.

“Overall the performance wasn’t our best.” Aloisi said Milanovic, who has been strong during the pre-season, showed plenty in his short period on the ground including scoring. The loss was marred by an injury to Tomaki Imai. Speaking straight after the game, Aloisi said Imai’s AC joint was out of place and they would wait until scans to know the severity of it, but said it looked bad. Aloisi was quick to point out that they lost their opening game last season on the way to a championship, so there were no early panic stations. “We know every game is tough, not our best performance,” he said. “The opposition were better than us tonight. “We again showed good signs and we’re a team that won’t stop even if not playing at our best.” United’s next match is on Sunday against Sydney FC.

Point Cook Centrals welcome back Dean Henderson for next year’s Western Region Football League division 1 season. Henderson, who is a utility, left the Centrals at the end of the 2019 season. Centrals, who were undefeated in 2022, have also announced the re-signing of Daniel Strnak. Strnak kicked 53 goals this season playing a key role in their premiership success.

M-League The Altona Falcons made their debut in the top men’s and mixed competition in the state, the M-League competition on Wednesday night. The Falcons, who are affiliated with the City West Falcons, have sides in the premier men’s competition and the premier mixed competition. Several of the City West Falcons’ Victorian Netball League players are part of the mixed team. The men’s side lost 47-44, while the mixed side won 56-55.
