Flag joy for Vikings Altona is back on top in the Western Region Football League division 1 competition. The Vikings won their second division 1 premiership on Saturday, defeating Werribee Districts in the grand final at Avalon Airport Oval.

The Tigers kicked the first three goals of the game, before the Vikings levelled the scores just before quarter time.

After then it was all the Vikings as they went on to claim the premiership.

Crime up in Hobsons Bay

By Matthew Sims Recorded criminal offences increased by 11 per cent across Hobsons Bay in the year to March, according to new Crime Statistics Agency [CSA] data.

The data showed there were 6209 recorded offences during the June 2021 to June 2022 period in Hobsons Bay, which was a jump of 616 recorded offences compared to the 5593 offences recorded during the June 2020 to June 2021 period.

Criminal offences in Altona increased by 7.4 per cent in the year to June, with property damage offences in Altona rising by 45.2 per

cent, while drug offences in Altona fell by 31.8 per cent.

In Williamstown, the data reflected there were 1112 recorded offences between June 2021 and June 2022, which was a 14.9 per cent jump.

The number of recorded theft offences in Williamstown during the June 2021 to June 2022 also increased by 49.1 per cent compared to the previous year.

In Maribyrnong, the data reflected a 3.6 per cent reduction in recorded criminal offences, with 8507 offences recorded in the year up to June.

Footscray’s data showed a 8.3 per cent

increase in the number of recorded criminal offences, including a 21.4 per cent jump in the number of theft offences and a 60 per cent increase in the number of recorded drug dealing and trafficking offences - from 15 to 24 offences.

In Yarraville, the number of drug use and possession charges recorded in the June 2021 to 2022 period doubled when compared to the previous year - from 16 to 32 offences.

Hobsons Bay local area commander Inspector Tim O’Connor said it was “incredibly positive” to have recorded criminal offences in Maribyrnong continue to decrease.

“While Hobsons Bay experienced an increase from the previous year, the numbers are stable when compared to pre-pandemic levels,” he said.

“We know that COVID lockdowns have had an impact on criminal offending, and we can expect to see an increase as we continue to emerge from the pandemic environment.”

Overall, the number of criminal offences reported across Victoria in the year ending June 2022 decreased by 10 per cent to 469,506 offences compared to the year ending June 2021.

Public holiday business dilemma

By Matthew Sims Deciding whether it is worth staying open during the two upcoming public holidays will be a “difficult” decision for businesses within Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, according to industry leaders.

A National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty The Queen will be observed in Victoria on Thursday, 22 September.

Announced by the federal government on September 11, the national holiday will take place the day before the AFL Grand Final

public holiday on Friday, September 23.

West Footscray Traders Association president Pradeep Tiwari said having two public holidays in a row will place extra pressure on local small businesses.

“With the small businesses everywhere, it will always be difficult with a public holiday with such short notice to come up,” he said.

“Many businesses are choosing to close because not only of the public holiday, but also school holidays would have begun and many families go away.

“We would like to request community to

support those businesses who chose to stay open on the day.”

Australian Industry Group Victorian head Tim Piper said while he supported the National Day of Mourning, he questioned the need for an annual AFL Grand Final public holiday.

“We’re not against the public holiday, it is acceptable for a monarch that has been ruling over Australia for 70 years,” he said.

“Why do we need a ‘Footy Friday’?

“We’re not going to get rid of it this year, accept it, but why do we need to

continue with it?”

Mr Piper said the two public holidays will be “costly” for businesses within the service sector.

“You’re going to have two days in a row of public holiday rates, so the service sector will be hit,” he said.

“For the non-service sectors...they will have to decide whether to close and not pay their penalty rates, or whether to open and pay the penalty rates.

“People will already have their plans and budgets in order.”

Play breaks down social borders Blurring the lines between the Australian myth of the bogan and the upper class is the focus of a new play set to grace the stage at The Substation in Newport.

Melbourne artist-led experimental art organisation APHIDS is bringing ‘Class Act’ to The Substation from Tuesday, September 27 to Saturday, October 1.

APHIDS co-director and lead performer Mish Grigor said the play looks at Australia’s overall approach to how we present ourselves

to society informs how we are perceived and the thin divisions between the bogan and upper-class lifestyles.

“I think Australia both loves and hates the idea of the bogan,” she said.

“That’s one of the stories we tell.

“I’m sort of a bogan.”

Incorporating dance elements from Alice Dickson and directed by Zoey Dawson, ‘Class Act’ is a re-imagining of the classic musical ‘My Fair Lady’ and a deconstruction

of the makeover trope.

Hobsons Bay council has adopted a new waste service policy, which would consolidate two expired policies and outline a number of changes to the council’s waste service, including the four-bin system implemented in February 2020.

At its meeting on Tuesday, September 13, Hobsons Bay council passed a motion to revoke the Waste Service and Charge Policy 2017 and the Waste Management Financial Reserve Policy 2018 and adopt the Waste Service Charge and Reserve Policy 2022.

Hobsons Bay councillor Pamela Sutton-Legaud said the new policy would not bring in any new changes but instead reflects and incorporates a number of recent changes to the council’s waste services.

“The two policies have been consolidated into one revised policy,” she said.

Since the two expired policies were adopted, council has endorsed or noted changes to the waste service including: • A new four-bin system endorsed on November 8, 2019 and implemented in February 2020; • Changes to frequency of collection endorsed on June 29, 2021 and implemented in November 2021; and • An option for a reduced charge for a tailored service for businesses noted on March 8, 2022.

General waste collection was cut to once a fortnight after the council rolled out a four-bin system in February 2020 to separate general waste, glass, mixed recyclables, and food and green waste but the council then reinstated a weekly collection of general waste at its meeting on June 29, 2021.

VU Polytechnic honoured for offering inclusive education Victoria University’s [VU] TAFE division Polytechnic has received the award for the Inclusive Training Provider of the year in the 2022 Victorian Training Awards.

Held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday, September 10, the awards celebrated the achievements of the state’s apprentices, trainees, students, teachers, training providers, employers and industry representatives.

The $5000 award celebrated VU Polytechnic’s demonstration of innovation, improvement and engagement for students with additional or special needs, including its learning model combining face-to-face

education with e-learning opportunities and offering students individual learning plans which can include specialist software, Auslan interpreters or note takers.

VU vice-chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker said diversity was at the heart of VU’s philosophies and practices.

“While we celebrate unemployment in Australia being at a 40-year-low, we often forget that a significant portion of Australians live with a disability,” he said.

“There is a huge wellspring of talent and opportunity among them, and one of our jobs is to ensure they have access to life-changing skills and further education.”

VU vocational education deputy vice-chancellor Dianne Semmens said VU Polytechnic has been an educational leader for a number of years with students from all backgrounds, including those with additional or special needs.

“We have a very deep and long history of empowering these students through education and training, and decades of success increasing their employment opportunities, which enriches the workforce for all of us,” she said.

VU Polytechnic has also collaborated with local industries and councils to place students with additional and special needs into work

placement programs, including programs within Western Health and the Western Bulldogs.

In the 2021-22 year, 75 intellectually disabled students participated in a bespoke curriculum to prepare them for further studies or employment, with most progressing to further studies.

Other award winners included Apprentice of the Year Chhunly Taing, who is a leading hand on the Metro Tunnel project.

Council changes its rail priority

By Matthew Sims Hobsons Bay council has shifted its official advocacy priority on rail transport to support Rail Futures Institute’s East-West Rail proposal.

As reported by Star Weekly, the Rail Futures Institute [RFI] has put forward the Melbourne East-West Rail proposal, which would combine the first stage of the Melbourne Metro 2 [MM2] project with the Western Rail Plan.

The proposed rail system would provide access points between the CBD, Spotswood

and Melton, as well as a connection to Wyndham Vale.

During its meeting on Tuesday, September 13, the council passed a motion to amend its strategic advocacy priority to encoruage the state and federal governments to bring forward funding and planning for the proposal and reinstate the Paisley train station.

Hobsons Bay Strand Ward councillor Jonathon Marsden said the proposal would unlock the potential of the entire western Melbourne rail network.

“The idea has legs,“ he said.

“It has a lot of community support and it’s one of our top advocacy priorities.

“It’s time to get a wriggle on.“ Fellow Strand Ward councillor Pamela Sutton-Legaud said she supported advocating for the proposal as it was focused on the amenity of the community.

“If we do not advocate for these sorts of projects and have them created in a way that benefits us, we end up with a travesty, which is the (West Gate) Tunnel,“ she said.

“At the very least, I hope having a higher level of advocacy around this massive project will bring more benefit to us.“

Mayor Peter Hemphill said the motion would provide him with the impetus to request other western councils, such as Maribyrnong and Wyndham, also officially advocate for the proposal.

A state government spokesperson said the planned Metro Tunnel, Suburban Rail Loop and Western Rail Plan developments were continuing and satisfied the aims of the proposal.

“The government’s current solutions provide the benefits that this plan purports to achieve and it is happening right now,” the spokesperson said.

Jorquera won’t mourn Queen

Altona North’s Beatrice is excited to receive an innovative solution to stop her biting her left hand as part of the Tikkun Olam Makers movement.

Innovations making a difference Altona North’s Beatrice constantly has a smile on her face and a skip in her step.

However, the two-and-a-half year old has had a difficult start to her life, being diagnosed with Rett syndrome, a severe condition of the nervous system which affects body movement and muscle tone.

Her mother Eleanor said Beatrice has also been biting the fleshy part of her left hand between her thumb and forefinger, which has been breaking down her skin.

She said Beatrice also has apraxia, a neurological disorder which affects the brain’s pathways in performing learned movements

and started to regress in terms of learned behaviours and tasks.

“She lost the ability to self-feed,” Mrs Smith said.

“Now, it’s just trying to make progress.”

Beatrice was among a number of ‘need-knowers’ connected to a ‘maker’ through the Tikkun Olam Makers [TOM] movement, which creates and disseminates affordable solutions to the challenges of people living with disabilities, the elderly and the poor.

The TOM Makeathon event on Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September

18 involved the ‘makers’ meeting their ‘need-knower’, putting their theories designs into action and then presenting a prototype.

Yarraville ‘maker’ Desiree Riny said she had been involved with TOM since 2019.

“I started as a maker because I wanted to use my skills as an industrial designer to simply make a difference,” she said.

“This allowed me as an industrial designer to use my skills to make a micro difference in an ecosystem that needs innovative healthcare solutions for everyday people with needs.”

Maribyrnong Yarraville Ward councillor and Victorian Socialists Footscray candidate Jorge Jorquera has clarified his reasoning behind his absence during the council’s mourning of the death of The Queen.

During its meeting on Tuesday, September 13, the council moved a motion to suspend standing orders to acknowledge The Queen’s death.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, September 14, Cr Jorquera said he could not be part of a commemoration of the English Crown.

“Even the most cursory or shallow understanding of history demonstrates the complicity of the English Crown in all manner of colonial exploitation, racist oppression and wanton elitism,“ he said.

Cr Jorquera has campaigned for local government to recognise January 26 as Invasion Day and he successfully spearheaded the #racismNOTwelcome campaign in the western suburbs since becoming a councillor in 2020.

“Every day, thousands of people pass away who have contributed positively to society,“ he said.

“They deserve to be mourned, not those who have used their power to uphold inequality and injustice.“ Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said the council would be flying its flags at half-mast during the 10-day mourning period.

“Maribyrnong City Council extends its deepest sympathies to the royal family and to the citizens of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth as they grieve the loss of Her Majesty,“ he said.

COVID-19 ventilation device nominated for health award The personal ventilation hood designed to fit over a hospital bed and the upper body of COVID-19 patients known as the ‘McMonty Medihood’ was among a number of initiatives delivered across Western Health honoured with a nomination in the 2022 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards recently.

In the ‘Improving healthcare through clinical research’ category, Western Health received a nomination for the technology, which involves a small fan and special filter extract aerosol droplets, significantly reducing the risk of COVID transmission from patient to healthcare worker.

Western Health anaesthetist and intensivist Dr Forbes McGain took the concept of the ‘hood’ to the University of Melbourne’s Engineering Department in 2020 and said he was thrilled it was now in widespread use.

“It was a very stressful, difficult time in the early stages of the pandemic,” he said.

“There was no vaccine available and we really didn’t know what we were dealing with, but it was also a wonderful time to collaborate.

“There was a lot of fear among healthcare workers and it was really important that we

found a way to protect our staff, particularly our nursing staff, from the unknown.”

Western Health also received nominations in the awards for its Western Health’s COVID Pathways program in the ‘Improving integration of care for patients with chronic and complex healthcare needs’ category, provided monitoring and support for COVID-19 cases in the community who required additional care and assessed patients for their suitability to receive early COVID therapies that aim to reduce the risk of hospitalisation or emergency department attendance.

The state government also nominated its ‘Predict, prevent, priority: safety’ – an approach to OVA management’ strategy, which addressed the prevention of occupational violence and aggression, in the ‘Improving workforce wellbeing and safety’ category, while the launch of a new Aboriginal Outpatient Clinic in 2021 received a nomination in the ‘Improving Aboriginal health’ category.

The winners of the awards will be announced on Thursday, October 13.

Fears grow that dental wait times could worsen Dental care retention issues and pay disputes has spurred on public sector dentists across the Western Metropolitan region, including in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, to file for industrial action in support of reducing long waiting times and increasing access to public dental care.

The Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch [ADAVB] lodged an application with the Fair Work Commission for a Protected Industrial Action Ballot in pursuit of their claims for a fair enterprise bargaining

agreement for public sector dentists on Thursday, September 8.

ADAVB chief executive Associate Professor Matt Hopcraft said there was a 22 per cent decrease in dentist numbers across the Western Metropolitan region over the past four years.

“Recruitment and retention are a problem, and that’s definitely linked to pay,” he said.

“That’s making it harder for people to access services and contributing to the longer times.”

In May, formal bargaining discussions commenced between the state government

and the Professionals Australia trade union to advocate for adequate pay.

“The Victorian Hospitals Industrial Association and the Australian Dental Association Victoria Branch continue to negotiate in good faith for a new enterprise agreement for public sector and specialist dentists,” a Victorian Government spokesperson said.

Mr Hopcraft said a salary increase would help ensure the sector would be strong and viable, so people could receive necessary care.

“Victorian dentists are paid on average 20 to 30 per cent less than their colleagues interstate, and that’s impacting on recruitment and retention,” he said.

“If the government doesn’t come to the table with a good deal for dentists, we’ll see more people leaving the sector and that can only mean that waiting lists will grow longer.”

Mr Hopcraft said ongoing impacts from long dental care wait times would have a “huge impact on people’s overall health and wellbeing”.

By Matthew Sims Maribyrnong council has formalised its position of not supporting advertising from fossil fuel companies on council property, such as sporting reserves.

Maribyrnong councillor and Greens candidate for Western Metropolitan Bernadette Thomas raised a motion at council’s meeting on Tuesday, September 13 for council to no longer support advertising from fossil fuel companies on council property, integrate this position into its sporting reserve signage policy, review council policies and strategies where needed and receive a report from council officers

by Tuesday, December 6 on progress made, with councillors unanimously voting to

pass the motion.

Volunteer-run and non-partisan climate advocacy group Comms Declare approached the council to support their campaign to ban fossil fuel advertising across the country.

Cr Thomas said the decision for council to no longer support fossil fuel advertising was in line with current strategies and thanked Comms Declare for bringing the campaign to the council’s attention.

“It aligns with the Climate Emergency Strategy and the Action Plan and the work that the Climate Emergency Community Advisory Group did,” she said.

“We know that if we are going to transition to a climate-friendly (and) a renewable-based future, we need every sector across our community to be on board.

Maribyrnong City Council acknowledged the Climate Emergency in 2019 and adopted its first Climate Emergency Strategy in 2020 and Climate Emergency Action Plan in 2022.

Maribyrnong councillor Simon Crawford said the motion would complement previous decision to not allow alcohol and tobacco advertising on council property.

“This is just another step in the direction of trying to not allow the promotion of activity that we’re trying to discourage,” he said.

“We’re trying to solve the climate issues, we don’t want to make them any worse.”

A group of inner-west families have united to call for Emmanuel College’s Altona North’s campus to become co-educational.

The group has launched a petition, which has attracted more than 300 signatures so far.

The petition said the community was in “desperate need” for a Catholic and co-educational secondary school in Altona North.

“Emmanuel College, St Paul’s Campus, in Altona North is currently offering Catholic, secondary education for boys only,” the petition read.

“Emmanuel College have embraced co-education at their campus in Point Cook.

“However, for many families in Melbourne’s inner-west, the Point Cook campus is not a viable option due to proximity and traffic conditions during peak times.”

The petition outlined the benefits of co-educational Catholic education.

“Gender-diverse educational environments encourage the development of empathy and cultivate synergy in society,” the petition read.

“Recent events around the world highlight the need for young men and women to develop skills before adulthood fostering the ability to work productively and harmoniously with different people from all backgrounds and genders.

“We, the families of Melbourne’s inner-west, implore Emmanuel College in Altona North to convert to co-education and allow the children of our community to become the empathetic and innovative men and women that society needs them to be.”

Looking at how environmental and community issues caused by the COVID-19 outbreak influenced our lives is the focus of a new exhibition on show at Footscray Community Arts.

Co-presented by Environment Film Festival Australia (EFFA), Footscray Community Arts and RMIT’s Curatorial Collective, the interactive art and film exhibition will explore themes of environment, gender, time, space, memory and essentialism.

EFFA short films screened during digital festivals during 2020 and 2021 will be screened during the exhibition, including films from Beny Wagner and Sasha Litvintseva, Jona Gerlach, Shirin Shakhesi and Sylvia Schedelbauer.

Partnering with RMIT’s Curatorial

Collective, emerging international artists Anita She, Bixiao ‘Frankie’ Zhang, Rosina Yuan and Sherry Liu will also be presenting their works.

Footscray Community Arts will also host a book launch of Hong Kong sustainable art group Artist Co-op’s new book ‘Sustainability Art in Hong Kong’ on Sunday, October 16, which will involve Australian and international art practitioners discussing the connection between art and contemporary environmental issues.

Sherry Liu will be holding artist chats every Friday during the exhibition at Footscray Community Arts from 2pm until 5pm.

Mayors welcome new migration opportunities

By Matthew Sims The mayors of Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong have welcomed news of an 21.9 per cent increase in the number of permanent migration visas available in 2022-23 across the country.

On Friday, September 2, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil and Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Minister Andrew Giles announced an extra 35,000 permanent visas would be available for the 2022-23 year - from 160,000 to 195,000.

Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said with about 25,000 new residents set to make the region home by 2040, it was important to ensure infrastructure, jobs, education, technology, and natural and urban environments created a inclusive, empowered and sustainable community.

“Hobsons Bay is a diverse community made up of residents from more than 130 countries, speaking more than 100 languages and from more than 80 faiths,” he said.

“Our cultural diversity brings both economic and social benefits to our community.”

Cr Hemphill said the council should also be offering more support to refugees from war-torn countries, such as Ukraine.

Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said Maribyrnong officially became a refugee welcome zone in 2005 and Maribyrnong council has since made a commitment to welcome refugees into the community.

“The City of Maribyrnong is proud to be one of the most multicultural municipalities in Victoria and has welcomed many new residents predominantly from India, China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Nepal,” he said.

“Our Council Plan 2021-25 articulates

Council’s commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community.

“Council has a key role in ensuring that all local service offerings such as, sport and recreation, libraries, community centres, youth services, and family services are inclusive of all our residents – this includes people who have arrived on humanitarian visas, people seeking asylum, those from refugee backgrounds, and individuals who have migrated to Australia.”

There will also be an increase in the number of available state and territory visas – from 11,200 last year to 31,000 places this year.

Hub contract awarded

By Matthew Sims Maribyrnong council has approved a contract for the construction of the Maribyrnong Civic Precinct and Community Hub worth $39 million.

During its meeting on Tuesday, September 13, councillors passed a motion to award a contract for the construction of the Maribyrnong Civic Precinct and Community Hub to Ireland Brown Constructions for the total contract sum of $39,126,941.

Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said the space would become a place that the community would enjoy into the future.

“It’s great to see the next steps of the new Civic Precinct and Community Hub – the

home of Maribyrnong City Council – come to life with the award of the construction contract,” he said.

“Works will take place over the coming years and once complete, will provide a modern, environmentally friendly space that pays homage to the rich history of the site and wider city.”

The works would involve the demolition of the single-level Community Well-Being building and three-storey office building, including detachment of the office building from the historic town hall and the construction of a new two-storey and six-star Green Star accredited office building and civic park, as well as refurbishment and conservation works to the heritage-listed Footscray Town Hall.

Maribyrnong councillor Michael Clarke said the investment in the facilities was a “momentous” commitment to the community.

“We are making history here this evening,” he said.

“What we’re looking to is a building that will once again welcome...the community back to this place once construction has been completed.”

Maribyrnong deputy mayor Sarah Carter said the priority of the hub would be to make it a space for the community to feel welcome.

“To keep and attract the best staff, we need to have a workplace that is fit for purpose and quite frankly, now it’s not,” she said.

“There has been enormous rigour put into the consideration of this project.”

The Altona and Laverton communities are encouraged to celebrate 22 years of achievements of the Bendigo Bank’s local Community Bank branches.

The Community Bank branches are hosting a joint community fair on Saturday, October 15 from noon to 5pm at Logan Reserve in Altona.

Festivities will include a sausage sizzle, musical performances from The Voice Generations stars Tim and Caitlin Rizzoli, face painting, petting zoos, vehicle displays and local sporting stars.

Chairperson Henry Da Silva said the locally owned and operated branch in Laverton is growing from strength to strength since it was established in 2000, with a further branch opening in Altona shortly after.

“Twenty-two years ago, we were able to open our branch thanks to the commitment and drive from the Laverton community,” he said.

“At a time when others were closing down their banks in our local precincts, we decided we would open and work hard to grow and develop together with our community.”

The celebration will mark more than $5.5 million distributed across the local community through the Altona, Laverton and Point Cook branches since 2000.

The Community Bank branches will also celebrate the success of their Defib your Club for Life project across the Hobsons Bay region, which has resulted in more than 100 defibrillators handed out to clubs and facilities across Altona, Laverton and Point Cook.

Council wants cycling stories I get around the municipality mostly by bike.

As a non-car owner, it is my lifeline to my community – my neighbouring suburbs, local events and outings.

I ride it to the shops, to the cinema, book group, visiting friends, to cafes, the library; to wherever I want to go locally.

I get to nearly all my duties as a councillor on my bike, and it means I get to see the local environment up close and personal.

So, you can imagine my devastation when my bike was stolen recently.

We’d been together for more than 10 very good years.

I’d recently given her a full service and replaced the seat and hand grips.

Losing her was like losing a long lost friend.

Riding my bike brings me a great deal of joy.

It’s also a great way to keep fit, reduce carbon emissions, congestion on the road and take short trips quickly and easily.

I get a thrill whenever I see others out on their bikes too and want others to share my experience of riding, but I know not everyone feels our roads are safe enough for them to ride regularly.

While riding a bike may be an old technology, as it becomes more popular, it’s also disrupting the way we have come to think of our roads – for vehicle traffic only.

A lot of people are choosing to swap their car for a bike or not buy one in the first place.

It makes perfect sense to me to ride to places that are less than five kilometres away from where you are, but if the road isn’t safe or there’s no path for you to ride along, you’ll be

Briefs Teenagers arrested Police arrested a 16-year-old Altona girl after she was allegedly seen driving in a stolen vehicle in Werribee on Friday, September 16.

Police have alleged five teenagers were observed driving in the stolen vehicle on Heaths Road in Werribee at about 9am. Police intercepted the car and arrested four people, before a 16-year-old Tarneit boy fled from the vehicle into a nearby shopping centre.

Police cordoned off the area and located the male hiding inside a change room inside a store.

A 17-year-old Tarneit boy, 16-year-old Tarneit boy, 17-year-old Hoppers Crossing girl, 16-year-old Altona girl and a 16-year-old Pakenham girl have been assisting police with their inquiries. The vehicle was allegedly stolen from a Truganina home on Thursday, September 15 in an aggravated burglary.

Long strides for cancer

Fast-track to tourism jobs

By Matthew Sims Williamstown resident John Ryan has raised more than $7000 for research and support for those suffering or recovering from prostate cancer.

What he thought was a basic check-up at his GP in early 2020 changed his life forever.

Mr Ryan said he was “shocked” by the diagnosis.

“It was a Friday afternoon and I had gone to the appointment without my wife or family,” he said.

“Afterwards, I decided to go down to the local pub, which is something I don’t normally do, and I just looked out over the water, trying to take in the diagnosis.”

Despite being put on medication, Mr Ryan’s prostate-specific antigen [PSA] levels continued to increase.

A further biopsy discovered three tumors, including one which was 13 millimetres long.

Mr Ryan underwent an aggressive prostatectomy and spent five days in intensive care.

He said with the recovery was “definitely not easy”.

“It’s not a manly experience,” Mr Ryan said.

He said having to adjust to having to wear a catheter and having incontinence issues was a mental strain.

Mr Ryan has started his participation in the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s [PCFA] Long Run challenge, which encourages people to run during September for prostate cancer research and support efforts.

At the time of publication, he has raised $7685 and ran 24 kilometres towards his goal of 100 kilometres.

Mr Ryan said he hoped his journey could inspire other men to check their prostate frequently.

“Don’t be a man about it,” he said.

“The earlier that it can get detected, the better.

“It’s now just as simple as a blood test.”

Mr Ryan said the PCFA’s support for those diagnosed was invaluable.

“You just have a plethora of support,” he said.

Victoria University [VU] is celebrating its contribution to the tourism, hospitality and event management industry workforce across the country for more than 50 years.

Ahead of World Tourism Day on Tuesday, September 27, VU is recognising the participation of a number of Melbourne tourism organisations who have provided opportunities for students to complete the 150 hours they must complete before they graduate, including Accor Hotels, Quest Apartments and RACV Clubs & Resorts.

VU’s Business School head Associate Professor Romana Garma said a number of the work placements result in a permanent position for the students.

“It is such a valuable experience for our students to work in their chosen industry before they graduate,” she said.

Known as ‘work-integrated learning,’ the placement has proven to be successful enough to allow for all VU business students in other majors, such as accounting, marketing, management and banking, to complete a guaranteed work placement from 2023.

Student Kayla Irvine said her time as an event management intern at sport talent and marketing agency TLA Worldwide provided her with an opportunity to apply her classroom theories to real-world work situations and then move into permanent employment afterwards.

Drawing leads to royal meeting

By Laura Michell Wednesday, March 5, 1986, is an incredibly special day for Caroline Springs’ Maryann Zerafa.

The then 20-year-old made her way to Melbourne Airport with her older brother to await The Queen’s arrival in Melbourne.

She was armed with a life-size drawing of the monarch that had taken about one month to complete.

She recalls a security guard helped her and her brother to hold up the poster – which Ms Zerafa estimates was six foot – as The Queen disembarked her plane and made her way towards to the waiting crowd with then

Premier John Cain. “[The Queen] said, ‘did you do that?’,” Ms Zerafa recalled.

“I said, ‘I did’, and she said it was very well done.

“I was over the moon.

“I remember thinking my mum is going to be so proud.”

Ms Zerafa’s brief encounter with The Queen earned her a spot in newspapers in the days that followed, with footage of her conversation with Her Majesty replayed on television news.

“The next couple of weeks … I went to my local Milk bar in Albion, Perth Avenue, and to my surprise there was a Royal Tour magazine with an A4 size photo of me holding my

Paddington in demand When news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death broke, an illustrated picture of her walking hand-in-hand with a recognisable, marmalade sandwich-loving bear began circulating on social media.

Alongside the image were the words, ‘I’ve done my duties Paddington, please take me to my husband’.

Since then, sales of the beloved, red-booted, bucket hat-adorned plush toy have skyrocketed at Keilor Park’s Aussie Toys Online*.

“Paddingtons with little boots are what have been walking out the door,” manager Sarah Thomas said.

“They are always popular at Aussie Toys Online, but we’ve seen an uptick and are selling 10 times more than we’d see in a month.”

Ms Thomas said while the company ships Bluey costumes overseas, it was the first time Paddington bears were making their way as far as North Carolina in the United States.

“You could not imagine how I felt!”

Ms Zerafa still has the drawing as well as clippings of the news articles and recordings of the TV news bulletins she appeared on.

She said that when she heard The Queen had died on Thursday, September 8, she was in disbelief.

She said her first thought was for her 86-year-old mum, Antoinette, who inspired her love for the Royal Family.

“I thought, ‘my poor mum is going to be devastated’,” she said.

“I was devastated … you just think she is always going to be there.”

MY PLACE UK expat Andrew Turner has put down roots in Footscray since moving to the area 14 years ago. He spoke to Matthew Sims about his love for running and cycling around the area, including taking part in the weekly Maribyrnong parkrun event.

What is your connection to Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay? I’m originally from the UK. I first visited the inner west when I stayed with a friend who was living there when I came to Australia backpacking in 2001.

After meeting and marrying my Australian wife we moved (back) to Melbourne in 2007 before settling in Middle Footscray in 2008.

We were drawn in by the location and diversity in the area.

Over the years, there has been a few changes, with plenty of construction, new infrastructure and a change from old pubs, like the Buckingham Hotel to a bar scene.

What do you love about where you live?

I love the easy access to so many different types of cuisine and such a range of produce at the market.

It’s convenient to get into the city by bike or train.

The Maribyrnong river is a great place to relax and exercise.

The beach is close by in Williamstown.

We also enjoy being able to wander down to the cafes in Seddon and restaurants and the Sun theatre in Yarraville.

We like riding our bikes to Williamstown and Altona beach.

I also normally cycle to the office in the city where I work in technology for a super fund.

The range of food and cultures you can come across within a few kilometres in the west is amazing.

African flavours have become a favourite and at times, pockets of Footscray can remind me of visits to Vietnam.

favourite too, reminding of curries in England with new dishes to experience too.

Running during lockdown led me to discover more green spaces and streams like Stony Creek.

How has your passion for the west informed your life and work?

I can’t imagine living anywhere else in Melbourne other than Footscray. I’ve become

a fan of the Doggies so I loved living through the eruptions of red, white and blue across the west in 2016 and watching the final at the Whitten Oval with thousands of other fans.

Where is your favourite local place to spend time?

Maribyrnong parkrun! Becoming involved in parkrun, initially as a runner and now helping out with the event team has been a great way to

make connections, form friendships, improve my fitness and learn new skills.

Initially, it was the running that got me interested after a tip from a friend.

As I came to value parkrun more, I wanted to help make sure it could continue so I got involved in volunteering there.

Initially, I took on roles I found easy such as photographer and pacer.

After COVID, I joined the core team of volunteers that ensure the event happens every Saturday at 8am!

After a bit of training I became a run director.

Although it may sound hard, the team of volunteers normally makes it quite an easy job.

Often I have plenty of time to congratulate runners and walkers crossing the finish line, sometimes along with their four legged friends.

It’s great that everyone is welcome and we get a range of ages from 4 year olds with their parents to those in their 70s and 80s.

Whether you walk or run, everyone covers the same five kilometers, you certainly don’t need to be an Olympian, but you may bump into one on the start line occasionally.

Afterwards, many of the participants pop over the river to the Boatshed to grab a coffee and maybe breakfast.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

As well as making new friends at parkrun, I’ve encouraged family members, friends and neighbours to try parkrun.

I might even check whether there is a local parkrun before I head off on holiday.

Leunig gently rocks the boat Cartoonist Michael Leunig is a son of the west. He was born in East Melbourne and educated at Footscray North Primary School and Maribyrnong High School. His poingnant, philosophical cartoons have become part of the consciousness of Melbourne as Phil Jarratt discovered.

hey say you should never meet your literary heroes for fear of disappointment, and I think there’s an element of truth in that, although the fault might lay with the expectations rather than the hero.

The thought came back to me the other night when, following a glowing introduction, an old man with a shock of white hair, dressed in jeans and sandals, shuffled to the microphone at the front of the room and seemed to struggle with its operation.

I use the term “old man” with the same sense of reverence used by Noel Pearson when he referred to Gough Whitlam, with the highest level of love and respect, as “this old man” in his beautiful eulogy.

Being but a few years behind him, I don’t get to call Michael Leunig old with anything other than reverence. But in a way, the great cartoonist, poet and philosopher has always seen the world through the prism of a wisdom way beyond his years, and often completely beyond our comprehension.

Except that it all made perfect sense, the duck, the moon, Mr Curly and Vasco Pyjama, the whole damn circus. It was the universe drawn small.

As Barry Humphries wrote in 1975: “Leunig’s subjects are as ambitious as his technique is simple. World cataclysm, The Flood, loneliness, cruelty, lust and greed.

Through these runs the vein of his compassion and humanity - his humour - illuminating many a darkling theme.”

Or as the artist himself put it in 1992: “A cartoonist will create a standard figure - the

Everyman, Everyperson image that becomes their messenger, their angel … In my case I create this character gradually over the years, this poor little wretched fool with big wide eyes, a bit of an innocent. He’s a bit genderless, a bit ageless — not quite human, more humanoid. A bit like a monkey or a foetus. But it’s a life spirit, you see, that people can trust. There’s no possible threat with this character. It can propose the most ridiculous things, or soft, touching little innocent things or it can be bawdy … People know it, know it can say anything and they always forgive it.”

Michael Leunig, now 77, was born in East Melbourne in June 1945. He was the son of a slaughterman, the second of five children.

His website bio contends he “was educated at Footscray North Primary School and Maribyrnong High School, plus at various factory gates, street corners, kitchen tables, paddocks, rubbish tips, quarries, loopholes, puddles and abattoirs in Melbourne’s industrial western suburbs”, finding creative inspiration from “Enid Blyton, Arthur Mee, Phantom comics, The Book of Common Prayer, J.D. Salinger, Spike Milligan, Bruce Petty, Martin Sharp, Private Eye magazine and The Beatles”.

Following his dad into the meatworks straight from school, Leunig was politicised by receiving his military conscription papers in 1965.

We’re not sure how he dodged that bullet, but he finds fame – and later adulation – as a political cartoonist on the game-changing Nation Review at the start of the ‘70s.

As a casual contributor to the Review

who never missed an issue, I was amused, fascinated and puzzled by Leunig’s cartoons, never having seen anything quite like them. I remain, more or less, in this state.

The list of Michael Leunig’s awards and achievements is very, very long, but since the cartoonist says he’s forgotten most of them because they are meaningless, let’s just mention that the National Trust declared him an “Australian living treasure” in 1999, which seems appropriate.

“I wanted to talk about the role of the artist in difficult times,“ he said.

“Actually, life is a difficult time. It’s not easy.

As well as the honorary doctorates and so on, I’ve also been cancelled quite considerably.

“It’s a big thing to have spent your whole working life offering things to your culture in a quite experimental way, but I think I’ve done it in good faith, made a few mistakes, offended a few people, not deliberately. That’s the nature of political cartooning, but you hurt people without intending to, and so you have to become more thoughtful about your own ideas.”

Although he never moves from the general to the specific, Leunig seems to be referring to last year’s “cancellation” from The Age and Sydney Morning Herald over his “Tank Man” cartoon which they declined to publish.

In it he juxtaposes the famous 1989 photo of the lone man defying the tanks on Tiananmen Square with a cartoon of a lone protestor in front of a loaded syringe. I don’t know if it was anti-vaxxer sentiment driving the cartoon or a more philosophical objection to mandates, but perhaps the bigger question is why ban it?

It was by no means my favourite Leunig but it didn’t offend me as much as the racist undertones of some of the late, great Bill Leak’s work, which we were all given the opportunity to see and judge.

Leunig softens the mood by placing himself in the context of history. “[When I started] it was the ‘60s and people were into rocking the boat. Now I think it’s rocking too violently, and I just try to steady it.”

In a moment he will delight us with his skill at “making marks” on paper, but first he offers a poem from his canon: Artist leave the world of art, Pack your goodies on a cart, Duck out through some tiny hole, Slip away and save your soul.

Leave no footprints, don’t look back, Take the dark and dirty track.

Cross the border, cross your heart: Freedom from the world of art.

I love that. The morning after, still pondering other parts of Leunig’s “muddle”, I pick up the Saturday Age, as is my habit, and go straight to the back page of the Spectrum section to see if the old man still has it.

I find a beautifully-drawn cartoon of the prime minister kissing a baby, then dropping it and running after being informed that it had been named after Julian Assange.

Cruel, coarse, caustic, hilarious – I laughed like a drain.

Yes, Leunig still has it, in spades.

Women bridge the building gap

By Matthew Sims Eight days of hard work has come to an end for 20 young women in Maidstone as part of construction of a scaled down replica of a steel cantilever bridge.

As part of the Constructionarium Australia All Female Build 2022 program, Constructionarium Australia. Major Road Projects Victoria, Level Crossing Removal Project, Rail Projects Victoria, Seymour Whyte, Aurecon and SMEC joined forces to deliver the eight-day training program from Wednesday, August 31 to Friday, September 9.

With a number of the participants only recently launching their careers in civil construction, the program aimed to develop the skills they needed to manage the build from start to finish, such as learning to identify risks and developing strategies to achieve the desired finished product.

Drive like a World Rally champ

By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring In motoring terms, the letter ‘N’ mostly stands for ‘neutral’ (aka going nowhere). But in the case of the Hyundai i20 N, nothing could be farther from the truth. The maker has been spruiking the compact as bringing the DNA of its World Rally champion to the street as a daily driver.

And there is little evidence to seriously doubt this. Powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine, mated with six-speed manual transmission, maximum power of 150 kW is enough to fire the hot hatch from zero to 100km / h in 6.7 seconds.

Based on the third-generation Turkish-built i20 hatch in Europe, the N version is nostripped out model on steroids. There’s much to admire in comfort and convenience for this class of car.

Pitted against the Ford Fiesta ST, Volkswagen Polo GTI and Suzuki Swift Sport, it serves up an encyclopedic list of performance goodies.

And the price of $34,990, plus on-road costs, which recently went up by $2000, is nothing to be sniffed at.

It can be had in five different colours: Polar White and Performance Blue, at no cost; or Metallic Sleek Silver, Mica Phantom Black and Mica Dragon Red, all $495. A black roof adds $1000.

Styling The rally inspired look is designed to match high performance by minimising drag and boosting power. Up front, air duct and splitter look the part, while out back a rather ragged design is topped off by a pared back rally-inspired roof mounted twin-layer spoiler that here looks more of an afterthought.

Hopefully, it makes up in aerodynamic efficiency.

A black radiator grille, based on a chequered flag, is dominated by the Hyundai badge and (you’ve guessed it) the letter N. LED headlamps on both sides incorporate tick-shaped daytime running lights.

Fog lamps flank a second grille strip low down. Whiz-bang wheel design, featuring red brake callipers peeking out from behind five Y-spoke 18-inchers, put the finishing touches to the hot hatch.

Interior Inside it’s Ns all round, with letter-specific touches such as N sport leather-trim seats with integrated headrests, leather wrapped N steering wheel and gear knob, plus sporty N alloy pedals. The iconic red steering wheel-mounted Rev Button chips in with a tempting finishing touch.

Wheels pushed out to all four corners of the car offer up a spacious cabin, capable of carrying five grown-ups in relative comfort.

Front bucket seats offer ample support in recommended enthusiastic driving, while shoulder and leg room in the back can take all but the bulkiest footy front row at a push.

Storage is king, with spades in versatility.

For example, there’s a multi-level boot with a movable floor, incorporating a fitted cargo net, in the upper position. Drop the 60/40 rear backrests and there’s a flat load area.

Taking the floor out unveils a deep cubby in spite of there being a space-saver spare underneath.

Infotainment Where do I start? The i20 N encompasses a plethora of computer-age automotive menus presented in twin 10.25-inch dashboard digital displays, offering instrument and entertainment info.

In fact, there’s almost too much to take in.

Included are worldwide track maps with lap times; personalised throttle response settings, exhaust note and stability control all accessed at the touch of two steering wheel-mounted

exceeded; Lane Following Assist, which keeps the car centred between lane markings; and Blind Spot Collision Warning, an alert when a vehicle approaches the driver’s blind spot.

Passive safety is in the hands of six airbags.

The instrument cluster has a range of display functions. On a more relaxing note, the car is fitted with a Bose eight-speaker premium sound system.

Engines / transmissions A 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder pumps out 150 kW and 275 Nm, matched with a six-speed manual gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential that drive the front wheels.

Driving Fuel (regular unleaded) consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres is claimed by the maker on the combined urban / highway cycle.

On test the lively hatch recorded 10 litres per 100 kilometres and 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres respectively.

An N Power Sense Axle up front and Dual Coupled Torsion Beam Axle at the rear provide stiff ride and handling, which did not miss a bump on the ubiquitous uneven Aussie road surfaces. Trackwork is more to the hot hatch’s liking.

Steering is precise and direct thanks to reduced steering gear ratio over the standard model, while the limited-slip diff, plus 215/40R18 Pirelli P-Zero tyres, developed specifically for the i20 N, has the car efficiently carving through corners.

High performance brakes with bigger front discs resist fading, produce consistent pedal feel and maximise heat endurance.

Bulldogs primed for big season

By Tara Murray Footscray is hoping a well balanced side will again have them in the mix at the pointy end of the Victorian Premier Cricket season.

The Bulldogs core has returned this season, while they’ve looked to add a bit more bowling depth.

New Bulldogs coach Dale McDonald said things had been going really well so far.

“Training has been really positive and we have a few new recruits,” he said. “It’s looking really good at this time of the year.

“It’s been really good and I love coaching, so it doesn’t feel like it is a chore.”

McDonald said there had been only a couple of changes to their first XI squad for this season.

Siddhesh Dixit is playing cricket in New Zealand this season as he seeks higher honours, while Matthew Underwood has decided that he isn’t playing cricket this season.

McDonald said they had lost some from the lower grades as well, who had gone back to play local cricket.

The two inclusions for the Bulldogs this season have come from interstate.

“Aaron Harding played under-19s for New South Wales,” McDonald said. “He is a fast bowler.

“We’ve had a guy come over from Tassie for work opportunities, Umair Butt. He played first for Sandy Bay, he’s an opening bowler.

“We have some younger guys who have come through our academy as well.”

McDonald said there would be some growth from their young stars this season, which will hopefully hold them in good stead.

Mitchell Jamieson made his first XI debut last season and had a really strong under-17 campaign.

McDonald said the young batter had spent plenty of time working with Cricket Victoria coaches during the off season.

taker last season, is another they’re expecting to take another step.

McDonald is hoping that they might also have a breakout season from Dylan Brasher, who won the Ralph Wiese Medal in the recent Darwin cricket season.

“It’s really good for him and hopefully we’ll see bigger things from him,” he said.

“I was watching him and seeing how he goes. He got back yesterday and was back at training last night.

“Hopefully he’ll have a good season.”

McDonald said the group was excited to get back into playing some two-day cricket this season, after not playing any for the last two years.

He said he doesn’t think they have to do a lot different from last year to be in the mix again, “It’s just taking opportunities in games,” he said. “Casey South Melbourne played off in a grand final and we had beaten them.

“I don’t think we’re too far away and a bit of extra depth with front line bowers has added

Wilcox earns rising star nomination Western Bulldogs young gun Rylie Wilcox has made her mark in the AFLW already earning a rising star nomination.

IIn just her third game at senior level, Wilcox registered 11 disposals and 252 metres gained to be named the Bulldogs’ best on ground in a thrilling win against Fremantle.

The 17-year-old year 12 student also slotted her first career goal midway through the second quarter, showing great composure, elite running and a classy finish.

Despite coach Nathan Burke saying after the game that he thought she deserved a nomination, Wilcox was shocked when it was announced.

“I’m pretty stoked about it,” she said.

“I didn’t expect it to be honest. I just played footy, and when Monday came around, [I was like] why am I the last one, “I’m so grateful for it.”

Wilcox said she put plenty of thought into her goal to ensure that she got the desired result she was after.

Wilcox, a former Northern Knight, was drafted to the Kennel with the Bulldogs’ first selection in the 2022 draft.

She said that she was already feeling at home in the AFLW with it being a big step up in intensity that pushes her to her limits.

Wilcox said she could have never imagined at the start of the year that she would be playing AFLW this year.

“Absolutely not at all,” she said.

“The first thing came to mind [when they brought forward the season] I thought you have to be 18 before August [and] I’m December, so I’m going to be next year.

“When it came out you had to be turning 18, I was pretty stoked about it but I was like crap school and everything, but I’m stoked about being at the Bulldogs.”

Wilcox said it had been difficult at times juggling playing footy and doing year 12, but said the school, her family and the club had been really good.

Bulldogs coach Nathan Burke said Wilcox has been “amazing” for the Bulldogs and had already exceeded expectations from when the club drafted her.

“We needed a smart winger who could play that position really well... we brought (Wilcox) in for a role –did we expect that she would play the role so well? Probably not,” he said.

“In her preseason – only training once or twice a week at times – she just forced her way into the team.”

Wilcox is averaging 13 disposals, two marks and two clearances per game.

The side spent the weekend in Nathalia as they prepared for the season.

The Bulldogs kick off their season October 1 in a two-dayer against Frankston Peninsula.

Bulldogs fall short in final Footscray was beaten by a better team on the day in the Hockey Victoria Premier Vic League women’s grand final.

After winning through to the grand final in a penalty shootout, the Bulldogs faced a massive test against Essendon on Saturday.

Essendon would make the most of its opportunities on the way to the premiership in a 4-1 win.

Bulldogs coach Alex Shirley said that Essendon was too good in the end.

“They were really clinical up front,” he said. “The match was probably closer than what the score line showed, but they just took the most of their opportunities.”

Essendon led 2-0 at half time. Having come back from that score line late in the season to come away with a draw, the Bulldogs had been confident they could still make it a contest.

Shirley said in the end it proved to be too tough an ask.

“They got one with 20 seconds left in the second quarter,” he said. “Had it been 1-0 we would have been really confident.

“We always thought we could get back into the game, we had a couple of chances but we didn’t make it count.

“They went up their end and scored twice to put it to bed.”

Despite the loss, Shirley said it had still been a pretty positive season. It’s just the second time the club has made a premier league grand final.

The club’s reserves side was able to beat Essendon in their grand final earlier in the day in a penalty shoot out.

Shirley said things were bright for the future of the club.

“That was a really good result,” he said. “One game doesn’t decide your whole season.

“We had plenty of positives and the reserves won.

“It was good for the club to get some rewards for all the hard work. We’ve got a good group and we’ll look to work hard for next year.”

Having fun the key for Sunshine Hockey Club Sunshine Hockey Club isn’t the biggest club.

In fact it’s not like most other hockey clubs competing in the Hockey Victoria winter season.

The club of more than 40 years has just one team coming in the metro 1 north-west women’s competition.

The club made this year’s grand final, losing to Altona. While Sunshine has one side, Altona on the other hand has more than 30 sides.

Sunshine captain Cassie Huett said the club was about a group of women who just want to just play hockey each week.

“We’re a low key hockey club,” she said. “It’s only our team and we don’t have other teams.

“We have all played at various levels before.

We don’t even train, we turn up every week and have fun with it.

“Some are a little fitter than others, with some playing football outside of hockey which helps.”

Huett said knowing the preparation they put in each season, they were thrilled to make a grand final.

She said Altona was just too good in the end, with the result a 3-1 loss for Sunshine.

“It was a good season. We seem to make the grand final every seven years and always against Altona,” she said.

“The night before we found out that we were playing Altona. We were meant to play another team, so it caught us on the back foot.

“We had a good record against the other team we were meant to play. Altona beat us last time we played them. They’re a really good team with set players and they had five subs, we didn’t have one.”

Huett said they get along really well with the Altona side and while they enjoy playing them, know that they’re hard to beat.

While there could be the temptation to grow

the club, Sunshine is happy with the one side and what they’ve been doing.

She said they don’t have the time nor the backing of a big club to grow even more.

“We’ve been going in excess of 40 years, started by our matriarch Rhonda,” she said.

“I’ve been playing for 17 years and we’ve had a core group of players most years.

“Some years we’ve only seven players and need 11 players to play. We might find a new player every few years, but generally it’s just us.”

Huett said for them it wasn’t about rising up the ranks to play at a higher level, they were happy with where they were at.

“We don’t take it too seriously, that is the key,” she said. “No point for us to be more serious, we stay in the same leagues.

“We’re always competitive each week.”

NAB League Western Jets coach Robbie Chancellor is headed back to the AFL after being appointed Greater Western Sydney’s head of development. The Giants announced that Chancellor would be a key part of new coach Adam Kingsley’s team going forward. The two worked together previously at St Kilda, where Chancellor was opposition analyst and manager of performance analysis before transitioning to coaching and becoming an assistant coach at the Saints. Chancellor coached the Jets for two years, including winning the club’s first premiership with the girl’s team this year.

WRFL Finalists dominated the Western Region Football League division 1 team of the year which was announced last week. The team included 19 players who played in finals, with Point Cook’s Nicholas Buykx, Sunshine’s Belal Abou-Eid and Brandon Lester the three exceptions. Minor premiers Caroline Springs and premiers Altona each had six players named in the team. Altona has played on four lines with Saad El-Hawli at half back, Joel Menadue at half forward, Elliott Cavallaro in the pocket, Josh Bench as a rover, while Ethan Taylor and Jack Norman were named on the bench.

Matilda coup for United

By Tara Murray Western United’s inaugural A-League Women’s squad has received a massive boost with the signing of Matildas’ star Chloe Logarzo.

United announced last week that Logarzo would join the club on loan from Kansas City in the National Women’s Soccer League in America.

Having played for 54 games for the Matildas, including scoring eight goals, Logarzo is one of the most experienced players in United’s squad.

She made her debut for Australia in 2013 and recently returned to the squad after recovering from a serious knee injury.

Logarzo has previously represented Colorado Pride in the United States and played in top divisions in Sweden, Norway and England, where she lined up for Bristol City in the Women’s Super League.

A two-time A-League champion with Sydney FC, Logarzo returns to Australia for the first time in two years.

“I am really excited to be returning to the A-League with a new club, new city and a new challenge ahead of the World Cup,” she said.

“There is no better time to return home to the A-League than now, leading into the World Cup and with Western United, a new and ambitious club.

“I feel incredibly confident that this is the correct decision for my return to playing.”

United coach Mark Torcaso said Logarzo’s signature was a major coup for the club and signalled its intent heading into the competition for the first time. He said she is a world class talent and would be huge for the playing group and the league itself.

“I’m really excited and proud that we can give Chloe a platform to continue her return to the pitch ahead of the World Cup next year,” he said.

“She is the type of player that can change a game in an instant and I can’t wait to work with her and see her help us on the pitch, but also off the pitch with the knowledge she can share with our younger players.”

Western United women’s football manager Amanda Stella said Logarzo would bring fans through the gates.

“Chloe’s leadership and standing in the game will help set the foundations for our culture and vision moving forward as a Club in the A-League Women,” she said.

Logarzo will join up with her new teammates in pre-season training in early November ahead of the opening round in the A-League Women’s season, which begins from November 18.

Meanwhile on Thursday, the fixture for the A-League Women’s season was released.

United will begin its new journey into the competition with a blockbuster rivalry clash against Melbourne Victory.

The home fixture will be played at City Vista Recreation Reserve – the first of five home matches at the venue in the west – on November 19.

United will also play home matches in Ballarat, while the location of two matches is still to be confirmed.

A massive 12 months for Western United’s Rhys Bozinovski has continued after being named in the Young Socceroos squad. The 18-year-old was called up to the squad for the first time for a three-day camp in early August and has been rewarded with another selection, this time as part of the squad that will play in the Four Continents Tournament later this month. The squad will play matches against Morocco, Chile and England.

VTCA The Victorian Turf Cricket Association will get underway with a round of one-day matches on October 1. In round one in the senior division, Yarraville Club is on the road against Westmeadows, while the Druids host Keilor. In other divisions, Deer Park will play St Albans, Aberfeldie will face Haig Fawkner in a grand final rematch and Sunshine United will play Craigieburn.

Happy homecoming for Menadue Altona star Connor Menadue was hyped up in the lead up to the Western Region Football League division 1 grand final.

Having returned to his junior club this season, the former AFL-listed player, was always going to be a key in who decided the premiership.

Menadue was good early, setting up a couple of goals and kicking one himself against Werribee Districts. He would continue that momentum and was named the Herb Pascarl Medallist as the best player on the ground.

Vikings coach Corey McCall said Menadue was keen for the big day to come round.

“Connor was hyped up for a week,” he said.

“I told him he needs to calm down for a bit.

“He’s obviously come back from playing AFL footy and he has some real confidence about his footy.

“A lot of the other boys were like he might have gone a bit too far with the confidence, everyone is different with approaches.”

For Menadue this year was about returning

to his home club and enjoying his football having tried to make it at the highest level.

Having come through the club, he knows how much this means to everyone.

“Just being able to come back and play for the local club, I played for as a junior,” he said. “A lot of mates play here, my brother plays here.

“He was a big reason why I wanted to come back, I wanted to enjoy my football too.

“It feels great and seeing all the smiles on all the faces of players, coaching staff, fans.. you can tell that everyone wanted it after the last few years.”

Menadue said he had been a bit sore leading into the grand final, but had tried to set himself up for a big game.

He said he knew that he could step up on the biggest stage.

“I was ready to try and have a good game and give ourselves the best shot at winning,” he said.

“I always knew I could change a game like that, I was hoping my body would allow me

to do that today. I felt pretty good today, really happy with that win.

“I really wanted to play well for the team and it’s nice to get recognised.”

While Menadue was named best on ground, his brother Joel Menadue did a lot of the damage early up forward.

The return of Connor to Altona played a big part of Joel cementing his spot in the senior side. He was named in the WRFL division 1 team of the year.

McCall said Connor made the call when he decided to come back, that he would take his brother with him.

For Connor, Saturday was a dream come true, playing in a premiership with his brother.

“He has had a terrific year,” he said. “He’s gone from a handful of senor games last year, to come in a had a huge role with the success of where we are now.”

It was a big day for the Menadue family, with Jackson Menadue playing in Werribee Districts reserves premiership side.

Tigers maintain pride in defeat

By Tara Murray Werribee Districts fairy tale run in the Western Region Football League division 1 didn’t get the perfect ending the club was after.

Having been 30 points down at half time in an elimination final, the Tigers fought back to beat Hoppers Crossing.

They then knocked out Deer Park and minor premierships, to win through to the grand final against Altona.

But the Tigers first WRFL senior premiership will have to wait at least another year, after strong performance by the Vikings.

The Tigers kicked the first three goals of the match. The Vikings kicked the next three to level scores on quarter time.

After that, it was the Vikings who had control of the game. They would eventually win, 10.21 (81)-9.4 (58) to lift their second season premiership.

Tigers coach Chris Gilham said in the end they were beaten by a better team on the day.

“We obviously wanted the fairy tale premiership after the run we’ve had by full

credit to Altona,” he said.

“I said to the boys after the game, as much as right now hurts, still got a lot to be thankful for.

“There was a 10-15 minute period had after those three finals wins that were worth every part of today’s disappointment, “We’re super proud of our club today. We didn’t win today, but we didn’t lose today.”

Gilham said a key start was a focus for them and they were able to do exactly that. He said the Vikings were able to absorb the pressure and then come at them and hit the scoreboard the other way.

“Credit to them with their pressure, he said. “They’ve got a couple of blokes that get off their man and intercept the ball. It’s been their strength all year, getting the ball back in the air.

“We tried to make it a bit of a chaos game at ground level, they controlled the air and probably controlled the result because of that.”

Rain started to fall in the middle two quarters which was the last thing the Tigers wanted. While it didn’t suit Altona’s game

either, it meant the team that adjusted better first would benefit.

“We need to be able to use the ball,” Gilham said. “We need to be able to put a chain today and get a run and carry through that middle part of the ground.

“The rain comes… It made it a simple game where we wanted it to be chaos and fast. At the end of the day they were too good.”

Zak Busuttil and Andrew Panayi kicked two goals each for the Tigers.

Gilham highlighted a couple of their defenders Leigh Johnson and Sean Gregory as two of their better players.

He said it was hard to find standouts,.

“In general I don’t think we had any standouts, but we didn’t have any shockers,” he said.

“That’s been our motto, we want to be reliable, not remarkable. We had quite a lot of that.

“No one was poor, they were just better as a unit.”

Gilham said they would be better for this year. Captain Daniel Schibeci, Bailey Siwek

and Connor Thar all missed the grand final, while they had given a number of younger players opportunities throughout the year.

“We’ve got some good player not playing and we think that we can get better, with guys coming back,” he said.

“We’ve found a few players and we’ve got a good group going forward and we’re excited by what the future holds.”

Gilham said they would look to take a leave out of Altona’s books as they head into next season.

“At a footy club all you want as a club you want people to be invested which we have in spades,” he said.

“We need to look at ways to get batter and go again next year and have a crack.

“The reason Altona win they’ve been up for four years and this is their first reward.

“You can’t rock up and have a good month and think you get it. You have to keep on rocking up, rocking up and eventually if you’re good enough you might get it. “ They did that and hopefully we can do that next year.”

Altona captain bows out on a premiership high Altona captain Steven Kennedy has gone out on top, with a premiership the icing on a successful football career.

One of two players from the Vikings 2012 Western Region Football League division 1 premiership in Saturday’s premiership team, Kennedy said the time was right to hang up the boots.

“I’m retiring after this one,” he said post game. “I’m done, I’m 33-years-old and that will do.

“It’s absolutely amazing, it’s 10 years between drinks for me [at Altona] and a lot of hard work over the last few years with COVID.” Kennedy said for much of the year the group didn’t look like they would be premiers.

He said they just found the right mix at the right time of the year.

“We had a lot of injuries during the year

and we didn’t look like the best side because of Caroline Springs,” he said.

“We were just lucky we got all our boys back at the right time of the year come finals, it all worked out for us.”

Kennedy said personally it had been a challenging year for him, but he was glad that he stuck around after two years cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the two premierships with the Vikings were very different.

“There’s different feelings,” he said. “The first one was a one point game, so it was decided right on the siren.

“This one we probably had wrapped up with about 10 minutes to go. I thought we had dominance for almost 90 per cent of the game, but we couldn’t captialise on the scoreboard.

“We kept hitting the scoreboard, we kept kicking points 10.21… We just had to stick at

it and grind it out.”

Kennedy said this one was also special being captain of the side.

Kennedy retires with a playing resume that puts most people to shame.

He’s a two-time premiership player at Altona and won the Barry Priest Medal for the best player in the WRFL division 1 competition in 2018.

Kennedy also had a couple of stints at Darley in the Ballarat Football League. There he was part of the Devils premiership in 2015.

That same year he won the Henderson Medal as the competition’s best player.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” Kennedy said of his career.

“Four grand finals for three premierships, I’ll take that one every day of the week. I would have taken one premiership.”

Vikings snare convincing victory

By Tara Murray Altona timed its run to perfection to seal its second Western Region Football League division 1 premiership.

After being on top of the ladder last year when the season ended early due to COVID-19, the Vikings had to work hard to get back to have another shot.

With players coming back from injury at the right time, the Vikings peaked come finals time with hard fought wins against Deer Park and Caroline Springs.

On Saturday in the grand final against Werribee Districts, the Vikings were the better side in a typical Melbourne day of four seasons in one.

After the Tigers kicked the first three of the game, the Vikings hit back and levelled the scores at quarter time.

Once they hit the front, they stayed there, winning 10.21 (81)-9.4 (58).

It was an emotional Vikings coach Corey McCall after the game. Two of the Vikings assistant coaches died during the season, making the premiership even more special.

“This is what you dream of, all the hours you put in,” he said.

“Everyone says coaching is a hard gig. You have to be really passionate and really driven, put in the hours.

“To get that reward. The club has only won one in their history, so a second one 10 years later, I’m ecstatic for the boys as well.”

McCall said they had a real slow start to the year, with the toll of the pandemic and interrupted football really taking its toll.

He said a lot of guys didn’t handle the way last season ended well, with no finals played for a second straight year.

“We had sort of struggled for pre-season numbers and were on the phone ringing,” he said.

“They were saying I might go travelling, the whole mindset changed. We slowly reconnected them and football is great like that.

“Football clubs are about relationships about connecting with your mates.

“A lot of people were engrossed with work and to come back to footy and were like we really needed this, we just sort of started building from there.”

McCall said they would have been happy starting the season 3-3, which they easily exceeded.

With players coming back from injuries, the Vikings started to get even better and finished the regular season in second spot.

brought in then,” he said.

“Our game against Caroline Springs was hard. My boys were really sore after that game,.

“I had said I need to get some more games and minutes into our list and team, but after that game we needed that week off “We looked really fresh we did a lot of non-contact running and ball movement.”

The Tigers had created three upsets to make it to the grand final, but the premiership was one step too far.

“I thought we were really good defensively and they kicked two from the boundary and I thought gee whiz,” McCall said. “When you start kicking goals from the boundary it might be your day.

“As I kept saying to the boys, we’re not converting our shots but we’re getting looks and it’ll come eventually.

“I would have liked to have had more of margin come three quarter time, [but] you take it by a point, you take it by 50 points if you win them. I’m extremely happy.”

The defender took several defensive marks, especially in the last quarter when the Tigers were attacking.

The premiership was the club’s second after a one-point win in 2012. Steven Kennedy and Mitchell Turnbull are the only players to be part of both.

While the Vikings seniors took home the premiership, the reserves fell short. Also facing Werribee Districts, it was the Tigers that took home the silverware, winning 11.4 (70)-8.8 (56).
