Cooking up solutions Inflation is a timely topic on the minds of economists, homeowners, politicians and, the pupils at St Clare’s Catholic College. When the student leadership team decided to look into raising money to host a funday at the school, they thought up the idea of selling popcorn and cookies. “We’ve been out of school for so long because of COVID-19, we wanted to start to rebuild that sense of community,” wellbeing leader Jan Guardiano said. When the price of popcorn began to rise, the pupils had to ponder what methods could be used to minimise the amount of profit they would lose. “They decided to go with a different [brand of] popcorn ... they’re learning skills ... and learning about running a little business,” Ms Guardiano said. “They’ve felt really validated in their roles as students in leaders and they’ve been able to have their students voice heard.”

Mr Carbines also announced a further VRIF investment of more than $148,000 into the Werribee Water Sustainability project, with the club providing about $44,000 and a $104,000 investment from Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria. The club currently buys thousands of litres of potable water to maintain the racecourse surface to a safe standard. The project will allow for 150,000 litres a day, a new bore, and a licence to pump water from the nearby Werribee River.
“Werribee Racing Club has a proud history spanning more than 150 years, and we’re making sure it has a bright future with these two significant improvements,” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said. “The funding will give the club enough water to keep the track in good condition year-round and reduce costs. “These are two much needed projects that ensure that Werribee Racing Club has the facilities to continue operations. We thank the Victorian government for its support,” Werribee Racing club chair Robert Jarvis said.
