“What money have raised has gone straight to Alyssa so she can start doing some of things that she wants for her kids.” “It will be a hell of a lot easier, especially because she’s in transitional housing, so she’s living with her best friend and she’s got three of her own.”

Wow, it’s a little library Little libraries could soon be popping up in front of homes or kindergartens near you, with the idea that residents can take a book and leave one behind for someone else to enjoy.

When Alyssa Cooke-Weeks began feeling unwell, she wanted to ignore it. The mother of three had recently overcome stage three breast cancer, had undergone a radical mastectomy and was looking forward to enjoying life with her three children. After multiple appointments and scans, her doctor was forced to deliver heartbreaking news.Ms Cooke-Weeks was diagnosed with terminal inflammatory breast cancer that had metastasized to her liver, bones, and main lymphWhennodes.herfriend Natalie Turner found out about her diagnosis, she was desperate to find a way to help. “I was kind of hoping that she was just exaggerating to be honest. I was hoping that because it was pretty surreal,” Ms Turner said. “She’s got three kids too, and I’m a mum too so I couldn’t imagine getting told that.”

“We hope that people build strong connections with their neighbours and also benefit from having easy access to the wonderful world of books, which can take us on fantastic adventures and teach us so much about the world.”

“She’s been through a hell of a lot … she hasn’t had the easiest life when it comes to her health,” she said.

As part of the Werribee River Association’s Sustainability Streets program, 10 little libraries will be installed in Wyndham. WRA sustainability project officer Jess Fairfax said the organisation collaborated with the community to ensure the success of the project.

Ms Turner said she’s known Ms Cooke-Weeks for years, she’s always been a good and understanding friend who would do anything for her babies.

Ms Turner hopes hearing Alyssa’s story encourages others to make the most of every evenonecasebabiesday.“Liveyourlifetothefullestandcherishyourandchildren,itcouldbelikeAlyssa’swhereshe’snotgoingtoseeheryoungestgrowupandheryoungestonemightnotrememberher,”shesaid.

The federal government is being urged to raise the Medicare rebate by 10 per cent amid reports an increasing number of GPs are ditching bulk billing. A HealthEd survey of 500 GPs found 22 per cent had changed their billing model, leaving patients to face higher out of pocket costs to see a HoppersGP.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) president, adjunct professor Karen Price, said Medicare patient rebates for GP consultations hadn’t kept pace with the cost of providing high-quality care.

“Despite all of that we are having to pay out of pocket for basic GP visits and when you consider all costs rising as a result of inflation and salaries not increasing at the same rate, it is hard to keep up.”

“General practice is up against it, and unless government boosts investment in GP care, more and more practices will be forced to pass the cost on to patients,” she said. “That is not a decision taken lightly and no one relishes the thought of asking their patients to pay more, particularly those struggling to make ends meet at a time of increased grocery and fuel costs just to name a few.“But practices have no other choice because their own costs are rising, and Medicare rebates simply haven’t kept pace with the cost of providing high-quality care. Our hands are tied, we need help desperately.

crime has had a decrease, we have had an increase in family violence incidents, again that is not a bad thing it means the community is confident to come forward and report those incidents, [and] we see youth offending is down, well down, that is excellent.

Wyndham residents were given the opportunity to hear from police about crime trends in the municipality at this year’s CommSafe Forum. Police used data from the Crime Statistics Agency for the period April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022 to analyse crime information relating to domestic violence, youth, drugs and hoon driving.Regional operations deputy commissioner Rick Nugent said the forum was a good opportunity to hear firsthand from the community about its safety concerns.

“This is leading to a subdued market in the coming months, with a number of prospective buyers deciding to sit on the sidelines as a result of the uncertain climate, resulting in declining month-on- month sales activity.

The median lot price in the western growth corridor, which includes Wyndham, Melton and Bacchus Marsh has increased by 6.1 per cent, despite lot sizes falling 1.1 per cent, according to new data. RPM’s Quarterly Greenfield Market Report provides insight on the vacant land sector from April to June of this year. The report indicated the western growth corridor had maintained its place as the dominant growth area, accounting for 45 per cent of sales. A demand shift from Melton to Wyndham saw a sales increase of three per cent in the municipality, despite a drop in sales catalysed by increasing residential construction costs, rising living expenses fuelled by inflation and higher home loan repayments. RPM managing director project marketing, Luke Kelly, said today’s buyer faced multiple challenges that weren’t present two years ago.

A spokesperson for Oreana Group said the trees were removed by a subcontractor who was not authorised to cut them down after deeming them a safety risk and of little value.

The spokesperson said Oreana Group had engaged with council to explain what transpired and understands there will be a fine issued for the unauthorised tree removal.

“Oreanawouldliketostatethatapermitwas not required to remove trees from within the Riverwalk Town Centre site as this has always been envisioned under the planning scheme endorsed for the site by both Development Victoria and the Wyndham City Council,” the spokesperson said. Once completed, Riverwalk Town Centre will include a range of commercial and retail uses, as well as a mix of townhouses.

The Geelong College, a leading Victorian day and boarding school from Early Learning to VCE.

It was a beet-iful week for volunteers at Werribee Mansion’s Parterre Garden who began the first harvest of the third annual Silverbeet Challenge.

“An Oreana subcontractor has removed a few trees on Wyndham City Council land during the course of the permitted removal of trees within the Riverwalk Town Centre site for the delivery of the new shopping centre,” the Orenana Group spokesperson said. “The tree removalist, who was not authorised by Oreana to take the trees on the council land, did so after assessing that the trees posed a safety hazard to the public and were of low-ecological value.”

The project was valued at about $4000 and the harvest will continue weekly until November when the summer display of florals will replace the silverbeet.

The Geelong College difference Wyndham council is proposing to rename the old alignment of Palmers Road from Sayers Road to the new Palmers Road in Truganina, ‘Sirius Court’.Aspart of the state government’s Western Roads Upgrade Project, Palmers Road has been upgraded from Dunnings Road in Point Cook to the Western Freeway in Ravenhall. Palmers Road from Sayers Road to the north was subsequently realigned during the upgrades. To remove uncertainty for road users Major Roads Projects Victoria (MRPV) has requested that council proposes a newCouncilname. says the name Sirius is derived from being the brightest star in the night sky and continues the “solar system theme” of the abutting subdivision, thereby meeting the requirements of the state government’s Naming Rules for Places in Victoria 2022, linking name to place. As the naming authority for infrastructure within the municipality, council is required to conduct the naming process and submit a naming proposal to Geographic Naming Victoria to officially rename the road. Wyndham residents can provide feedback on the name using a number of methods including email, post and over the phone. All submissions must be received by August 31. Have a say on Sirius Court In 2021, the silverbeet harvest produced 6000kg of silverbeet which was used in 7440 meals and assisted more than 6000 families. (Supplied)

The driver is expected to be charged with a string of dangerous driving offences, speeding and driving while unlicenced. Police will also impound his ute, which was not registered, had false registration plates and was unroadworthy.

“Ongoing monitoring and assessment of trees within the Western Roads Upgrade network is integral to ensuring the safety of the community and that of the road users.”

The installation of an environmentally sustainable acoustic wall is set to reduce traffic noise from the Prices Freeway for Werribee’s Riverwalk estate residents. The 1.6km wall will contain panels made using about 75 per cent recycled plastic, collected from homes across Melbourne that would otherwise end up in landfill. Approximately 61 tonnes of recycled plastic will be used to make the panels, equivalent to the volume of plastic that about 15,500 homes would dispose of in an average year.

“We have people ready and willing to be a physical barrier to them cutting down and removing these trees.”

A new program aimed at supporting parents and caregivers affected by family violence has launched in Wyndham. Bringing Up Great Kids After Family Violence is a weekly initiative by the Salvation Army’s Children and Parenting Support Service that empowers victim survivors living in Wyndham and Melton to help raise their children. The program is jointly facilitated by lead practitioners Sandra Milunovic and Neha Chugh.“Especially due to COVID, we had a lot of people who were not able to get out of their houses or not be able to reach out for support,” Ms Chugh “Bringingsaid.up great kids is one of our first programs that we’ll be delivering in person, and this program specifically can’t be done online and needs to be done in person.

Ms Chugh said this is the third time the program has been attempted, after the initial two tries were cancelled due to COVID-19 lockdowns.“Wehadquite a few mothers on our waitlist who wanted to have a safe space and work on their parenting goals, because of the trauma they had faced they were unable to focus on their children and that guilt of not being able to support their children,” she said. “We’ll be focusing on the client’s needs and desires and they want their best parenting goal to be and help them achieve that goal.”

“We do a lot of community work, [and work] in conjunction with a lot of community services based in the [local government areas], we work closely with the schools, we work closely with the community centres [and] the councils of Melton and Wyndham.”

resident Steven Robertson lost both his parents to cancer. His father Ted, who was an army sergeant in World War II in Papua New Guinea, initially beat a carcinoma of the colon in 1980, but was then diagnosed with a metastatic renal carcinoma in January 2002, which impacted his kidneys and had spread to other parts of his body. After undergoing radiotherapy, he died in early April later that year at the age of 78. Only a short time after his father’s death, Mr Robertson’s mother was diagnosed with a primary peritoneal carcinomatosis, a rare form of cancer which starts in the thin layer of tissue lining the inside of the abdomen. Despite undertaking chemotherapy and surgery in December of 2002, the doctors discovered the cancer had spread too far to treat and she died in April of 2003 at the age ofMr75.

The impacts of cancer are profound and reach far beyond those diagnosed. Ahead of Daffodil Day on Thursday, August 25, Matthew Sims spoke to people across the western suburbs about how cancer has affected their lives.

Giving back to those who have had everything taken away is the focus of this year’s Daffodil Day appeal. Running throughout August, Cancer Council Victoria’s Daffodil Day campaign is culminating in Daffodil Day on Thursday, August 25. “This cause is very close to my heart as I lost my Nana to pancreatic cancer in 2005,” she said. “I do my best to fundraise every year for Girls Night In and I’ve been doing it since 2014. “It’s important to me to raise funds for women’s cancers and promote health checks.”

“You don’t have to look far. This is a public way to show support.”

Cancer Council Victoria fundraising and communications division head Lyrian Fleming-Parsley said Daffodil Day is a chance to reflect on the lives of loved ones that have died and support those within communities who have been affected by cancer. “Unfortunately, cancer is one of those illnesses that affects everyone,” she said.

Ms Gill said Gwen valued her independence and held onto that until her death. “When I was in primary school, she helped me get ready for school and made our breakfast – toast with Vegemite and cups of tea,” she said. “Years later, when I was out of high school and working as a retail assistant at David Jones, Nana was given the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer,” she said. “She was told she had an inoperable tumour and was given three months.

“Cancer takes so much from all of us,” he said. “It’s why this year, we’re calling on Victorians to give hope to those impacted by cancer by funding vital cancer research that is saving lives every day.

Ms Gill said she was grateful that she got to spend her grandmother’s final moments at her side.“During her illness, I took time off work to take care of her as she had done for me when I was young,” she said. “Nana stayed strong for six months and when she became too unwell to be cared for at home, she was admitted to hospital and passed away a few days later.”

Ms Fleming-Parsley said the Cancer Council is hoping to raise $2 million as part of this year’sCancercampaign.Council Victoria chief executive Todd Harper AM said with 95 Victorians being diagnosed with cancer each day, the appeal is a chance to contribute to ongoing efforts to increase the survival rate.

Cancer Council and its partners have invested more than $290 million in world-class cancer research from 2016 to 2020, leading to a number of advancements in cancer prevention, screening and treatment. Thanks to investment in research, advancements have been made in cancer prevention, screening, and treatment to increase the survival rate from 51 per cent in the late 1980s to about 70 per cent currently.

“Even when faced with a terminal diagnosis, Nana didn’t want any fuss and I remember her telling me ‘not to go getting upset,’ she had accepted it and it helped me to accept it too.”

Stalls in Melbourne’s CBD will be selling daffodils on Daffodil Day or daffodils can be bought directly from the Daffodil Day website.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) issued a provisional determination to Moderna and Pfizer to start approvals for an Omicron-specific vaccine earlier this year. Dr Haikerwal acknowledged the development of a new vaccine was not cause for people to delay their vaccination, as the new version wouldn’t be available until at least the end of the year.

Engines / transmissions Niro has a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 77kW of power and 144Nm of torque. It combines with a 32kW 170Nm electric motor to produce 104 kW and 265 Nm.

Summing up Kia Niro hybrid is an exceptional vehicle in many ways, it has minimal fuel consumption if driven correctly and is still pretty economical if you push hard. It’s attractively styled and practical. Combined with that very impressive warranty it’s certainly one to be added to your list of vehicles under consideration in its class.

likehaveIt’sacomparativelyheavyvehiclesoitdoesn’tahugeamountofgetupandgothatweinourvehicles.Thoseusingitinanormal manner will almost certainly find it more than adequate.Handling is good as Niro and other Kia models are specially set up to suit the needs and desires of Australian drivers. It turns in promptly and holds the road at speeds that aren’t likely to be used by drivers of family cars. There is a head-up display for the driver, but as happens all too often it doesn’t work well if you’re wearing polarising sunglasses - as I do. Some carmakers have prevented this problem by angling the display in a slightly different direction. Kia may care to try this in an update - here’s hoping. The front seats are a good size and we found them comfortable even after several long drives we did as part of our road test reviews. The squared off rear end mean that the getting in and out of the back part of the cabin is easy. Rear seat passengers also have space but if those in the front set their seats back a long way some in the back may find their legroom is tight. It makes sense to take people who are going to be sitting in these seats to come along to the showroom and try them out for size. This may mean you not buying this model and perhaps trying a larger Kia, or perhaps going to look at rival cars. There are air vents in the back of the centre console so the passengers have an even more pleasantHyundairide.says the hybrid models have combined fuel usage of 4.0L/100km for the hybrid. We used three to four litres per hundred during open road driving and five to seven litres per hundred kilometres in city and suburban running.

Driving Performance is very good with the usual instantaneous response from the accelerator that’s such a delightful part of any vehicle with electricity as part, or all, of its powertrain.

The Niro S HEV gets the latest iteration of the Kia Tiger grille with halogen headlights and LED daytime running lights and taillights. The GT-Line variants get LED headlights. The S HEV runs on 16-inch alloy wheels, the two EV models on 17-inch and the S GT-line on 18s. The gloss-black roof rails are a nice touch and add an upmarket look to the Niro.

Interior Niro has pretty good interior space for its class and the styling is attractive with a relatively modern look. The Niro Hybrid has 425 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, or 1419 litres with the second row folded. To achieve this volume there’s a space-saver spare under the boot floor.

Kia Niro is a small SUV that’s available in two efficient FWD electrified powertrains, the Hybrid Electric (HEV) and full Electric (EV). The previous Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) has been dropped with the latest (MY23) update which arrived here in April 2022.

The model we tested has a 10.25-inch central screen as well as a 10.25-inch instrument display. These sit in a wide panel that stretches across most of the front of the dash area. The quality is high and it’s easy to read them at a quick glance. This is an important safety feature as, despite my best intentions, I do tend to look at the centre screen to change radio stations or for other reasons.

Safety Kia Niro has autonomous emergency braking including car, pedestrian, cyclist and intersectionLane-keepintervention.andlane-follow assist is handy for driver who aren’t paying full attention and tend to wander about from time to time. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert and avoidance is fitted to all models of the Niro. Our test car had safe-exit assist to prevent opening the door into an approaching car or cyclist. Reverse parking collision avoidance is handy as it can be all but impossible to see others vehicles, or people on foot when revising in tight carparks.

Niro is a fairly large vehicle for its class, indeed it’s not far short of being a medium sized model. The wheelbase is a lengthy 4.72 metres. It is 4.42 metres long, 1.83 metres wide and has a height of 1.55 metres. Bulleen has four players over 30, our oldest player is 28. “We were able to withstand patches that Bulleen threw at us.” Amanda Paschal top scored with 22 points, while also having seven rebounds and six assists.Dyani Ananiev had 17 points and matched it with 17 rebounds. Game two and if needed game three will be played at Werribee in front of a packed Eagle Stadium. For Wyndham’s coaching staff, nothing changes this week as they head in the final weekend of the season. “It’s a similar process,” Akalo said. “The girls enjoyed the game last night and took time to understand what we did. Once it hits Monday it’s business as usual. We will review a few things that we need to tweak for game two. “We want to keep things as business as usual and we don’t want to get compliance. “We are still the underdog team with a chip on our shoulder.”

WRFL Werribee Districts will face Hoppers Crossing in an elimination final in the first week of Western Region Football League division 1 finals. The Tigers beat St Albans in the final round, 20.9 (129)-10.10 (70) to seal fourth spot. A final round 13.7 (85)-6.9 (45) loss for Hoppers Crossing to Caroline Springs meant the side slipped to fifth. Point Cook finished its season with a 19.15 (129)-12.12 (84).

NAB League The Western Jets finished the regular season with a loss to the Northern Knights in the NAB League boys competition. The Jets started the better of the two sides, before the Knights hit the front before half time. The Knights kicked 10 goals to four after half time to seal an 18.5 (113)-10.12 (72). Harrison Miller, Logan Morris and Matthew Payne kicked two goals each. Miller was named the Jets best. The Jets finish the regular season in 10th.

“They have been really tough physically and mentally and this is a reward for the resilience they have shown.” Meyer said the final round loss was the rocket some of the girls needed, to show them that four points and wins don’t come easy. The side then moved onto the semi final against West Footscray. Centrals found themselves down by 12 points at half time.

“It’s been a tough four, five or six weeks for the younger ones with the opportunity to play decreasing as we made the push to finals,” he said.“To get the opportunity, it wasn’t large minutes, three to five minutes. “Hopefully it’s not the last time this season.”

“We want a playing pathway to allow girls to play at West Point from three-years-old all the way to seniors by adding a senior side and potentially an under-18 team to the female teams,” he said.“We’re also looking to have the specific role of female co-ordinator to help develop and oversee all matters relating to female soccer within the club and obviously we want a woman in this com/222052911695051fun.”schooladifferenttosaid.yearuntiltosonhadn’twellexperiencesupChangeaHebeenunder-8sincludingteamsnotroleasdadormaleunfortunatelystilldounderstandeverythingaboutgirls.”TheclubiscurrentlyoneofthebiggestinWyndhamwith29teams,sevenjuniorgirlsteamsfromthroughtounder-15s.Nolletsaidfemaleteamshadneverthefocusoftheclubpreviously.saidwhentheclubparticipatedinFootballVictoriainitiativelastyear,MakersProject,whichwassettodriveparticipationandimproveforwomenandgirls.Nolletsaidwhiletheyscoredreallyinthereview,itwassomethingtheypushed.“PersonallyIhavebeencoachingmysince2016andIwasthefirstonesaygirlsdidnotwanttoplaysoccermydaughteraskedmetoplaylastandseehowmotivatedshewas,”he“ItiswhenIrealisedgirlswantedplay.Theywanttoplaybutforreasonsthanboys…itismoresocial-funevent,theirfriendsfromorbestfriendsarehere.“TheywanttogetfitorbecauseitisDetails:https://form.Jotform.

By Tara Murray Wyndham couldn’t have asked for much more from the opening match of the best-of-three Big V men’s state championship grand final series. Playing game one against the Sunbury Jets at home in front of their big home crowd, Wyndham turned on a show for the home crowd on Sunday. In one of the performances of the season, Wyndham stunned everyone winning, 106-68.Wyndham coach Lucas Allen said he wasn’t expecting that type of result. “I was expecting something a lot closer,” he said. “It’s one of those games I expected momentum swings and a number of runs to come from Sunbury. “We did an outstanding job of keeping the foot on the pedal.” Allen said it was one of the first times they had executed the scout perfectly. On the defensive end they restricted the Jets shooters and made them force shots.

“There’s still work to be done.”

Allen, who for the most part hadn’t been happy with most of their performances throughout the season, said now it was just about winning, not the long term focus is had previously been. Game two on Saturday night and if needed, game three on Sunday will be played at Sunbury.Allenis expecting a different Sunbury team to come out on Saturday night after the disappointment of game one. “Sunbury will be wound up about that performance,” he said. “We know they will look to come out firing and we will have to try and back it up with that same intent on both ends of the floor.” While knowing Sunbury will come out firing, Allen said the focus remained on them. ‘“Our practice has not varied as we prepared for finals,” he said. “We’ve been focusing on our defence and offence and how we execute that. Our focus stays the same and it doesn’t change at all.” It’s been a big week for Allen, having been appointed assistant coach of NBL side the South East Melbourne Phoenix. He had been part time technical assistant during the club’s first season.

Centrals fire on all cylinders to defeat Parkside Point Cook Centrals showed they meant business in the first week of the Western Region Football League division 2 finals, putting rival teams on notice. Undefeated this season, the Centrals were at their best against Parkside on Saturday in their semi final with a grand final spot on the line on CentralsSaturday.controlled the game in the first half, before continuing that dominance in the second half to win, 16.9 (105)-0.11 (11). Centrals’ coach Dean Chambers said it was the sort of performance they had been working towards all season. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “A lot of hard work has been put in and it’s a reward for all the effort we have put in. “We now have the week off. Collectively as a group we have played some really good football.“Weplayed without any standards across the board, which is what we have been looking for all year, an across the board effort.” Chambers said there was a breeze favouring one end, which they used to their advantage in the first quarter with five goals. They backed it up with another five goals and restricting the Magpies to just one goal, with the game all but over at half time. It gave the Centrals the chance to rest some guys in the last quarter.

The Football Victoria season isn’t even finished and West Point is starting to prepare for next season. After massive growth in its female program in the past couple of years, West Point is focused on growing it further, especially with the women’s World Cup coming to Australia. Club secretary Guillaume Nollet is hoping to complete the playing pathway for females at the club.

“The understanding and executing our scout for the team defence was really good,” he said. “Everyone really bought into that. Ish and Max had 16 points between them, that is unheard of. “They got some shots that we were happy for them to Mauricehave.”Howard top scored with 23 points, while having four rebounds six assists and threeAaronsteals.Dolny and Manel Ayol also had 20-point games, One of the more pleasing things for Allen was the opportunity for everyone to get some court time, with both teams clearing the benches in the final quarter.

Shaun Mannagh kicked six goals in the win, while Kye Declase kicked five goals from the wing. It was a couple of the younger players who stood out the most to Barlow. “Sam Paea copped a corkie early in the game and had the opportunity to come off, but he soldiered through. “Emmanuel making his debut through the middle and I think had the most amount of clearances along with Tom Gribble.“They came in and gave us a bit of variety for beyond this year.” The win resulted in Werribee finishing the season in 10th spot. Having lost several games by under two goals cost the side a chance playing finals.

“We will rue the missed opportunities,” he“Butsaid.we respect the competition as well. You look at that seven AFL-aligned clubs are playing finals and when they play their best football they have a strong contingent that are going to win a lot of games.

“We started really well and attacked the ball around the contest which is really important for us,” he said. “The centre bounce clearances have been an issue for the main part of the season. We threw in a different look. “Emmanuel Ajang was on debut and won the first two centre clearances. We got a bit of variety into the side. “The second half we ran away with it. The first half we made a real emphasis on the contest and that is where we set it up.”

He said the results showed that they weren’t that far off the top teams. He said one of the main areas they would look to work on in the off seasons was how to finish off games. While the season is over, the work is far from over behind the scenes.

By Tara Murray Werribee will review this year’s Victorian Football League season with mixed thoughts after it came to a close on Saturday.Afterfalling out of the finals equation on the back of four straight losses after the second last round, Werribee released the pressure in the final round with a 29.17 (191)-0.10 (10) win against the Northern Bullants.Werribee coach Michael Barlow said it was a good way to finish the season.
