“The third runway, if it goes ahead, will impact the whole of brimbank, not just Keilor … there will be experience of noise where aviation noise was not present before,” she siad. “This will not be a normal type of noise.”

Cr Jae Papalia said the health risks associated with the proposed runway were “concerning”.“Thehealth and wellbeing of our community must be fairly considered in the decision making process,” she said.

The research, which formed part of council’s submission to the airport on the runway and its wider master plan, found that guidelines in the World Health Organisation Environmental Noise Guidelines (2018) (WHO Noise Guidance) are exceeded across several parts of Brimbank under the proposed plan, indicating that there is an increased risk of adverse health effects within the exposed population.

StarWeekly , an independent health report commissioned by council found the development of the third runway represented an “unreasonable and unacceptable risk” to the health of the Brimbank community.

A report to last week’s council meeting said it was important Brimbank residents fully understood how they could be impacted by the runway.“Thisis further reason why an independent health impact assessment to be considered by the Australian government is critical. This information then needs to be made widely available,” it Councillorstated.Virginia Tachos said the campaign would galvanise the community behind the council’s submission.

The runway could include impact sleep disturbance and cause anxiety, depression, heart disease, and cognitive impairment, as well as poorer educational outcomes in children, the research noted.

Brimbank council will launch a community activation campaign to call on the federal government to conduct an independent health impact assessment of Melbourne Airport’s proposed third runway. Councillors endorsed the campaign during a council meeting on Tuesday, August 16 amid

Taylors Lakes cyclist Manny Karvelas is in the midst of preparations for his 28th consecutive Around The Bay bike ride. He will attempt the 210-kilometre ride in October, with 2022 the first year back after a two year hiatus because of COVID. youaonanymore,forMrKarvelasisadamanthe’llkeepsigninguptherideuntilhisbodywon’tallowhimtobutadmitshe’sapprehensivetotakethemammothrideafteratwoyearbreak.“Youstop,youstart,yourunoutofwater.It’slongwayforabike,itdoesn’tmatterhowfitare,whatmakesitevenmoreofsomething is I’m 60, I’m not a young fella anymore and I did my first one at just over 30,” Mr Karvelas said.“You’ve got to do a lot of training. You’ve got to train all year round and especially during those awful winter months when it’s cold, it’s miserable, it’s all black, that takes even more mental resilience.”

Mr Karvelashe said cycling translates into many aspects of his life. “A lot of people think how did I get myself into this? or will I ever see the end of it? It’s the same approach, bit by bit, just break it down into pieces,” Mr Karvelas said. He also says it is imperative to have a riding group for support, training became difficult during covid as the 5km radius around his Taylors Lakes residence eventually left him “dizzy,” riding around in circles but his group was supportive and encouraging of each other to get back out there.

By Olivia Condous Half of workers in the western suburbs are commuting outside of the region for work while local employers struggle to find skilled staff, according to new research from Victoria University (VU). The Centre for International Research on Education Systems at the Mitchell Institute has released a report highlighting the mismatch between skills and jobs in the west, exploring the needs of the region’s industry based on surveys and interviews with 700 employers.

The ground-floor activity room will be known as Wiipatja Kuulim or the “Mob of people’s place” while the first-floor quiet room will be known as Brimbank Durra or the “Heart of Brimbank”.Thecentre is expected to open mid-September.

Holly McGuinness caught up with Brimbank’s book experts - the municipality’s librarians. Based across Deer Park, St Albans and Keilor, five book experts share their favourite reads.

What are you reading at the moment? I’m reading Metal Fatigue by Sean Williams. It’s classic 1990s Australian Science Fiction set in a dark future. It’s a high tech detective story, and it’s pretty cool. What is one book everyone should read? Judging from my commute, everyone should read ‘The Victorian road rules around using your indicator’, but otherwise Stephen King’s The Shining – the best ghost story written in the last hundred years. Bring a doona to hide under while you read it!

Rachel D’Arcy

Spreading the Book Week word

What are you reading at the moment? Boy Erased by Garrard Conley. What is one book everyone should read? Night by Ellis Wiesel.

What is one book everyone should read? Any book written by Tim Winton. Great insight into the Australian character and landscape. Beautiful and evocative use of language.

What is your favourite book? I have so many favourites. If I had to choose one it would be LittleWomenby Louisa May Alcott. Despite being written more than 150 years ago, the rich depiction of the 19th century and the deep bond shared between the four teenage sisters and their mother will draw you in (year after year, if you’re like me). What are you reading at the moment? I am currently reading How it Feels to Float by Helena Fox. This book was on the shortlist for the CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers in 2020. What is one book everyone should read? I’m a firm believer that everyone should read (or listen to) the Harry Potter series at least once in their life!

Kylie Prociw What is your favourite book? To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I have re-read it many times over the years, and each time I do it still evokes such a strong emotional response. It’s so beautifully written, and explores topics of social injustice that are still relevant to this day.

MifsudJosephine What is favouriteyourbook? Too hard to pick only one, but my recent favourite is Lifetime of Impossible Days by Tabitha Bird. My first introduction to magical realism – delightful and heart wrenching. What are you reading at the moment? Last book I read was Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy. A great COVID recovery read, couldn’t put it down!

My favourite story ever is WonderlandAdventuresAlice’sinby Lewis Carroll. I have loved it since I was a kid. What are you reading at the moment? Right now I am reading a book called Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis. It is a YA horror book that’s described as Scream meets the Babadook! What is one book everyone should read? Well, the Harry Potter series of course – there really is something for everyone there. But the book I recommend most to kids who want to read something scary is Coraline by Neil Gaiman. It is so original and evocative and creepy in the most wonderful way!

Chelsea Barr What is favouriteyourbook?

Scott Steensma What is your favourite book? Watership Down by Richard Adams. It’s just a beautiful story that will make you look at rabbits in a different way. The animated film made me cry when I was a little boy, and I have no comment on whether the book had the same effect when I read it last year!

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you. I’m an avid marathon runner and have shaped my career and life around the lessons I’ve developed through my running such as the power of our mind, the beauty of our breath and the power within us to pursue our greatest goals. My running was a catalyst to becoming a yoga and meditation teacher, a wellness and mindset coach and running my own wellness hub in the area with my business partner. How are you helping women across Brimbank? Through our business Own Your Health Co, my business partner, Lisa Saunders and I help guide women back to themselves during their peri-menopause and menopause transition. We work with women to develop a whole health lifestyle plan around their innate biology that affords them the opportunity to fully explore the advantages of this life phase and how this transcends into their lives, careers and health. We also work with organisations to help create menopause friendly workplaces to help shift mindsets, develop positive and inclusive cultures and help break the “taboo” around the very natural phase of menopause.

What do you like about where you live? The variety of options for cafes, running tracks, parks for the kids and sporting opportunities. There is a real community feel from one suburb to the next and I always feel a sense of being at “home” no matter where I am. What, if anything, would you change about where you live? As a business owner in the area, I welcome more opportunities to network with other business owners and community members collectively helping shape the health and vitality of individuals, businesses and communities.

Driving Performance is very good with the usual instantaneous response from the accelerator that’s such a delightful part of any vehicle with electricity as part, or all, of its powertrain.

The Niro Hybrid has 425 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, or 1419 litres with the second row folded. To achieve this volume there’s a space-saver spare under the boot floor.

Interior Niro has pretty good interior space for its class and the styling is attractive with a relatively modern look.

likehaveIt’sacomparativelyheavyvehiclesoitdoesn’tahugeamountofgetupandgothatweinourvehicles.Thoseusingitinanormal manner will almost certainly find it more than adequate.Handling is good as Niro and other Kia models are specially set up to suit the needs and desires of Australian drivers. It turns in promptly and holds the road at speeds that aren’t likely to be used by drivers of family cars. There is a head-up display for the driver, but as happens all too often it doesn’t work well if you’re wearing polarising sunglasses - as I do. Some carmakers have prevented this problem by angling the display in a slightly different direction. Kia may care to try this in an update - here’s hoping. The front seats are a good size and we found them comfortable even after several long drives we did as part of our road test reviews. The squared off rear end mean that the getting in and out of the back part of the cabin is easy. Rear seat passengers also have space but if those in the front set their seats back a long way some in the back may find their legroom is tight. It makes sense to take people who are going to be sitting in these seats to come along to the showroom and try them out for size. This may mean you not buying this model and perhaps trying a larger Kia, or perhaps going to look at rival cars. There are air vents in the back of the centre console so the passengers have an even more pleasantHyundairide.says the hybrid models have combined fuel usage of 4.0L/100km for the hybrid. We used three to four litres per hundred during open road driving and five to seven litres per hundred kilometres in city and suburban running.

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Kia Niro is a small SUV that’s available in two efficient FWD electrified powertrains, the Hybrid Electric (HEV) and full Electric (EV). The previous Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) has been dropped with the latest (MY23) update which arrived here in April 2022.

Summing up Kia Niro hybrid is an exceptional vehicle in many ways, it has minimal fuel consumption if driven correctly and is still pretty economical if you push hard. It’s attractively styled and practical. Combined with that very impressive warranty it’s certainly one to be added to your list of vehicles under consideration in its class.

Safety Kia Niro has autonomous emergency braking including car, pedestrian, cyclist and intersectionLane-keepintervention.andlane-follow assist is handy for driver who aren’t paying full attention and tend to wander about from time to time. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert and avoidance is fitted to all models of the Niro. Our test car had safe-exit assist to prevent opening the door into an approaching car or cyclist. Reverse parking collision avoidance is handy as it can be all but impossible to see others vehicles, or people on foot when revising in tight carparks.

Niro is a fairly large vehicle for its class, indeed it’s not far short of being a medium sized model. The wheelbase is a lengthy 4.72 metres. It is 4.42 metres long, 1.83 metres wide and has a height of 1.55 metres. The Niro S HEV gets the latest iteration of the Kia Tiger grille with halogen headlights and LED daytime running lights and taillights. The GT-Line variants get LED headlights. The S HEV runs on 16-inch alloy wheels, the two EV models on 17-inch and the S GT-line on 18s. The gloss-black roof rails are a nice touch and add an upmarket look to the Niro.

The model we tested has a 10.25-inch central screen as well as a 10.25-inch instrument display. These sit in a wide panel that stretches across most of the front of the dash area. The quality is high and it’s easy to read them at a quick glance. This is an important safety feature as, despite my best intentions, I do tend to look at the centre screen to change radio stations or for other reasons.

Impey’s sporting journey started as a five-year-old playing in the under-8 competition at Melton. He made his first representative team as a bottom age player in the under-12 team. “I played with many teams as I was growing up,” he said last week. “We followed mum’s playing career around to Keilor, Werribee and back to “RightBroadmeadows.now,Iamplaying with Ballarat in the NBL [National Basketball League] 1 [South] and the [Big V] youth league team.” Impey might be the youngest player in the team, and one of the youngest in the competition, but he doesn’t look out of place. He stands at just under 200 centimetres tall. “I hope to grow another few centimetres over the next few years to make me more versatile as a basketballer,” he said. “If I do, I can play in anyImpeyposition.”hasbeen a regular fixture in regional and Victorian representative teams, but he takes nothing for granted. He missed five months of basketball in 2018 and 2019 due to a fractured tibia. It took another six months for him to regain his full strength.COVID stopped the 2020 season and impacted 2021. When basketball fully returned, Impey had moved up to under-18s, where he impressed immediately.“Iwasselected in the Victorian Country team,” he said. “We finished the carnival in sixthImpeyplace.”has been part of Basketball Victoria’s National Pathway Program for two years until he recently graduated this year. It doesn’t take much imagination to wonder why young basketballer Lucas Impey went straight to his parents when asked about his sporting heroes. His mother Jodi played more than 300 Big V games across Melbourne, while his father Christian played high school basketball in America and has coached for more than 20“Iyears.grew up on basketball courts around Victoria,” Impey said. “My earliest memories are watching mum play and dad coach. Double the talent as twins join Western United It’s double trouble for Western United with twins Adriana and Melissa Taranto joining the club’s first A-League Women’s side. The 23-year-olds, who play for Calder United in the National Premier League, are the first siblings to sign for Western United. It is a return to the top flight competition for the pair, who both debuted for Melbourne Victory in 2015 as 16-year-olds while also representing Australia at youth level. “It means so much, not only individually but to sign on together is amazing,” Adriana said. “We’ve played in the same team since I can remember, so to play at the highest level in Australia – we just can’t wait.” Melissa added, “we’ve been wanting to push to get into the A-League again, so for the opportunity to join a Club like Western United who has done so much with its men’s team, and with the partner club at Calder, it’s something we’re super excited for” The pair have both been part of Western United’s development program. They told Star Weeklyearlier this year they were hoping to get another opportunity at the top level.

For Richards, it’s a return to the club where he started his football career. Richards played more than 300 games for the “Blakeclub.was a junior player at Albion Football Club from the age of six to 16 when he moved to Sunshine FC due to Albion not having an under-16s side,” the social media post said.

“Blake brings a wealth of experience and knowledge back to Albion and is looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season.”KayneTaylor and Matty Davis have been named assistant coaches. Taylor has coaching experience at Caroline Springs, the Western Jets and interleague, while Davis played about 380 games for Albion and captained the club between 2012 and 2014.

Richards replaces James Doherty who was first appointed to the role in 2020 after the side went winless in 2019.The Cats returned to the winners list in 2021 after more than 1000 days without a win. This year they won six wins and were in the finals mix until late in the Dohertypiece.saidon the Facebook post, that he wished all the best to Richards and the club into the future. The division 2 finals series got under way at the weekend, after deadline. Point Cook Centrals was to play Parkside for a spot in the grand final, while North Footscray was to play Wyndhmvale in a knock out semi final.

Blyth said they had no expectations on the side this week against Braybrook. He said they would use it as another chance to get out there and play football. “We have no expectations at all,” he said. “Whatever happens we are happy. As a team and a footy club to have made it so far to play finals is a massive bonus for us. “The experience for the young kids to have another week of footy is awesome. We’ll take every week as it comes.” The Dragons were set to play Tarneit on Saturday in the final round, which was after deadline.Speaking before the match, Blyth said the match was an opportunity that didn’t come around too often, with nothing on the line. “We’re going to play finals,” he said. “We will look to use every moment and try to get the guys to work on things to take into next week.

“It’s about not worrying about what you can’t control. We want to try and bring the momentum and try to settle the side.” Blyth said it would be wait and see on a few key injury concerns for the first week of finals. He said it had been extremely difficult figuring out their best side this year with injuries, COVID and work accidents. “I’ll never use injuries as an excuse as it looks down on other players. We take every week as it comes and try and deliver.” In the other division 3 match on Saturday, the Suns were to host Braybrook, which was after deadline. “I said to the guys last night, I was president at Brimbank Stallions for three premierships and now this is number two at Westside. “This one is the most rewarding. We’re a young club that is eight years old. We’ve only had a senior side for five years and the last two seasons have been wiped out. “We have worked so hard the last few years, we can now relax next week.” Raniolo said it was good to know that they had their fate in their own hands and be able to secure the title with one round remaining. He said the pressure was clear heading into the match though. “They were nervous,” he said. “Even when the game started they were nervous. Once we scored the first goal they relaxed and could not wait for the 90 minutes to be over. “Bell Park fought early, but once we got the second goal it was over and we started celebrating.”Raniolosaid state league 4 was the hardest division to get out of, with only one guaranteed team going up each year. In past years there has been a play off for second spot to try and earn promotion, but not this“Stateyear.league 4 is the hardest to get out of and the last two years and not playing with COVID has made it harder,” he said. “After the last two years we’ve all stuck together. Sunshine Heights is aiming to embrace the moment in a surprise finals appearance in the Western Region Football League division 3. Finals wasn’t on the cards at the start of the season for the Dragons, as a number of departures left them scrambling for players. But the side was able to come together under new coach Colby Blyth and secure fourth spot, heading into the final round, which was after deadline.Blythsaid it was pretty exciting for the club to make “Fromfinals.where we come from at the start of the year, it’s really exciting for the guys and they are going to enjoy it,” he said. “This season was more about emphasising the standards to get to a good spot for the future. It’s a really good accomplishment by everyone.“We’re confident where they are with the new standards and that we have taken a couple of steps “There’sforward.stillroom for improvement for next year as we further evolve and more guys get a better understanding going into next year.”

with another goal. They moved a number of players around in the last quarter, as cramping and the heavy ground took its toll.

Surgeon also made sure every player got time on the ground and got to enjoy the moment.“Wehad to keep changing some things around as Aberfeldie were tagging some of our players and it was about trying to bring them into the game,” she said. “It’s also developing players. While it’s a grand final, we’re still looking to the future and 2023 and trying to get them experience through the midfield. “Steph [Aleksovski] in the midfield pretty much played the whole game having never played midfield before.

Surgeon said it’s pretty special for the club and making sure they leave a mark in female football.“It’sbeen around for the last few years and it’s been a focus,” he said. “It’s kind of like Geelong and we keep trying to get better. “Every year we build on different things. We started at the bottom and kept adding building blocks to be so competitive every season.”

“We knew they were going to be looking for Caruso and Liv [Manfre] and everyone like that she’s just a competitor.”

Devils gear up for double grand final challenge

The Devils are looking to win their first senior grand final since 2001. With all but one player available for selection, there’s plenty of depth heading into the grand final. Guicas said they needed to just stick to what they’ve done all year and resulted them finished with the minor premiership; “We’ll look to enjoy the grand final and the lead up,” he said. “We’ll train Tuesday, Thursday, Tuesday and Thursday. We’ll try and keep the week as normal as possible.” Oak Park will play Coburg Districts in the preliminary final after the Lions beat Burnside Heights, 12.11 (83)-10.8 (68) in the other semi final.

Sabine Navarro, who was awarded the best-on-ground medal, got a goal in the dying seconds to cap off the win. Surgeon said Navarro was playing in her last game, having decided to retire. The premiership in the Blues’ third women’s premiership.

Keilor impresses for second flag

Skipper Daylan Kempster continued his good form and did a lot of the hard work. Guicas was full of praise for his backline.

The Kangaroos made the most of the breeze in the first quarter to open up a three goal lead at quarter time. The Devils slowly made inroads in the second quarter with the margin back to six points. The Devils were able to shut the Kangaroos down in the third quarter.

“We changed a few things at half time and that worked in our favour,” Guicas said. “We stopped them in the third quarter. It was stoppage after stoppage and we worked hard. We were a goal down at three quarter time.“We know we can run out games and we were still running on the ground at the end. We kicked the first goal of that last quarter and it went from there.” The Devils kicked the only five goals of the last quarter to run away with the results. Damien Cavka kicked four goals for the Devils after a slow start.

“Our backline has been great this year,” he said.“We got Bryce Whelan from East Sunbury and he has been outstanding. Vincent Schiavello is another. “We have a potent forward line, but our backline has done a lot of the work for us.”
