Mr Los said there has been discrepancies between job needs and available skills within the west for a number of years. âThe digital skills training that high school students are taught in 2022 is almost the same as the old âmultimediaâ classes I did 20 years ago,â he said. âIt gets better at university, but kids are not being properly prepared.â
The kids at Cambridge Primary School have a new playground to run, slide and climbActingon.principal Jane Budd said the school had a focus on student wellbeing and the bright colours used on the playground combined with the enjoyment of having a new area was thrilling for pupils. âSince the school has been opened there hasnât been a new playground so the kids are super excited,â she said. Ms Budd said it was important for the kids to have a sense of responsibility over their new play area. âBecause the students were part of picking aspects of the new playground, I think thatâs made it more exciting for them, there were different designs and they got to vote on particular designs,â sheâWesaid.have junior school council leaders being part of the monitoring of making sure that everyone is using the equipment properly, it gave them some ownership.â
The Centre for International Research on Education Systems at the Mitchell Institute has released a report showing that close to half of the workers of Melbourneâs west must leave the west for work, while local employers have said they have been unable to find local staff with the right skills. Altona North-based business Australian Website Services has has built about 800 websites for small and medium-sized businesses including local cafes, tradies and community services, with most of its clients based in Melbourneâs west. Australian Website Services digital director Stephen Los said he has found it hard to find locals with the required skills. âI would absolutely love to hire locally since 98 per cent of our customers are in the west, and it makes sense to have staff who live here and understand the region,â he said.
Skill shortage challenge
VU research officer Dr Melissa Tham said their evidence-based approach to boost the number of jobs in the west would be to add on to existing infrastructure. âWeâre not suggesting that we have to completely reinvent the west or anything like that,â she âWithinsaid.the context of the west of Melbourne, weâve got these unique challenges but because we have this increased boost in the population, thereâs also a huge opportunity there.â

Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said resident safety is âof the utmost importanceâ and council recommends avoiding areas where magpies are known to swoop.âParks, sporting grounds and nature strips are often where magpies nest during their breeding season,â he said. âMagpies can become aggressive towards
Wyndham council is asking residents to take additional care this swooping season to avoid becoming the victim of a magpie attack. Magpies breed from August to October, and as they are very protective of their young, may swoop on intruders if they feel threatened.
Ambulance response times in Wyndham have increased by just over two minutes from 2020-21 to 2021-22, amid service demands breaking three consecutive records. The data released by Ambulance Victoria (AV) indicated the average response time between April and June of this year for code one call outs, was 15 minutes and 28 seconds, slightly higher than AVâs target of 15 minutes. Paramedics responded to 65.5 per cent of code one calls within 15 minutes, responding to 3591 code one incidents over the three month period.
Wyndham councillor Adele Hegedich said this is a wonderful opportunity for any registered nurses and midwives who were thinking about moving into the maternal and child health field. âAcross Wyndham we have seen a dramatic fall in available MCH nurses to employ after the pandemic. In turn this has had a huge impact on new parents with cancellations of MCH appointments for their children,â she commencedtofixing.âthetoserviceallprogramcity.graduatecouncilreceivesuccessfultheorthissaid.âProvidingascholarshipprogramlikewillnotonlyhelparegisterednursemidwifefurthertheirstudieswithoutextrafeesbutuponcompletion,scholarshiprecipientswillanofferofemploymenttojointocompleteatwelve-monthplacementhereatWyndhamâWewanttoensurethattheMCHhereatWyndhamcanprovidenewparentsaccesstothewonderfulitprovidesandrecruitingstafffillthosevacantpositionsisoneofmanystepsweareworkingtowardsThescholarshipisalsoavailableapplicantswhohavealreadytheirstudy.Details:https://bit.ly/3p9CimO
Glenn Ballard is celebrating coaching 250 games. (Damjan Janevski) 294246_01 Wyndham coachâs âshockâ milestone
When compared to the same time last year, ambulance services responded to 74.6 per cent of 2613 code one incidents within 15 minutes, with the average response time 13 minutes and 18 AVâsseconds.acting metro region director Jess McGowan said the service was âvery busyâ and asked the community to help by saving triple-0 for emergencies. âThe COVID-19 pandemic continues to put unprecedented pressure on the health system across Victoria and the nation,â she said. âWeâre working hard to relieve pressure in the system with more paramedics on the road and more resources at hospitals to help offload patientsVictorianfaster.âAmbulance Union general secretary Danny Hill said he was pleased to see more âconsidered effortsâ to reduce the demand on the system, but there was more that could be done. âWe really need state and federal governments to work together so that weâve got nurses in aged care facilities with the right support available to treat patients there, rather than taking them into hospital by ambulance. We need more access to GPs and the GP super clinics,â he âParticularly, said. in the outer areas of Melbourne, you really need those to provide other options to people rather than hospital. âThis is not a problem we can deal with by sticking more and more paramedics on because theyâre only going to be transporting patients to hospital and the hospitals donât get any quieter, we need to look at ways of reducing demand.â
When Werribee Centrals Football club coach Glenn Ballard found out he had coached his 250th game recently, the Hoppers Crossing resident was shocked. âI had no idea at all, no idea, Iâve never, ever, ever made it about me. Itâs always been about the players,â he said. Ballard says thereâs one thing in particular that has inspired him to keep coaching. âBeing involved in their football journey and trying to teach them the basics of football and just seeing the improvement of all the players in all age groups,â he said. âThe Werribee Centrals Football Club is an amazing place to be around, I just love being involved, I bleed red and gold.â Ballard grew up around sporting groups, as his father was always heavily involved in coaching and helping sports committees, and was compelled to continue coaching by someone close to him. âI was coaching in another competition and I had finishing coaching and I had been done with it to be honest,â he said.

The DELWP said not all magpies will swoop, but itâs important to take precautions. (Chris Stenger/Unsplash) Wyndham council is hoping a new nursing scholarship program might help with the shortfall of maternal and child health nurses. The program will provide a payment up to $25,000 which is available for registered nurses and midwives who complete the accredited graduate diploma of MCH nursing studies at Federation University, RMIT University or La Trobe University.

Mr Thorpe also recommends looking towards the bird if it is safe, as magpies are less likely to swoop if they think you are watching them.âAs a community it is important to appreciate that living alongside native wildlife is a positive aspect of urban environments and that we need to accommodate the natural behaviours of wildlife,â he said. âNot all swooping magpies can be removed, and a permit is required from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to beTheassessed.âDELWP website also features a Swooping Bird Map, that shows locations where people have been swooped, so residents know to avoid or take additional care when traveling through specific areas. There are currently four recorded magpie attacks in Wyndham, all of which occurred in SanctuaryResidentsLakes.areencouraged to report cases of swooping magpies to help keep up with local swooping managing-wildlife/swooping-birdsDetails:hotspots.https://www.wildlife.vic.gov.au/

An agricultural company has been fined more than $9000 for failing to provide information to Environment Protection Authority (EPA) officers investigating reports of odours from its Mt Cottrell farm. The EPA said it received numerous reports from Wyndham residents concerning an offensive odour, described as fertiliser or manure type smell on March 16. EPA west metropolitan regional manager Steve Lansdell said the company had the opportunity to avoid receiving the fine.

âThe company did not respond to EPAâs formal notice and failed to respond to a second notice a few days later. We only heard from the company director when he received the infringement notice â a fine of $9087 for failing to respond to those notices,â Mr Lansdell said. âAny business operator or landholder must take an EPA remedial notice seriously. In this case, cooperation in providing information and resolving the odour problem might have made a fine unnecessary. âPaying the fine will not end the investigation, and EPA will still expect measures will be taken to prevent the odour problem in the future.â

During the presentation, the brigade was also honoured with a belated commendation from former chief officer Steve Warrington for another tragic road crash in July 2018 on Hopkins Road, Truganina. The commendation detailed the long and proud history dedication and commitment CFA has to the protection of others. Mr Warrington wrote: âThe character displayed by the crews in responding to this complex and challenging incident is worthy of recognition and exemplifies the commitment to protecting lives and property. The Werribee Fire Brigade is a credit to CFA and the local communityâ.Werribeecaptain Michael Wells, who accepted the belated award, said the tragedy that surrounded these tragic incidents highlights that CFA volunteers are often working under the most difficult circumstancesâItâsquitehumbling to represent Werribee Fire Brigade as captain, knowing that when the pager goes off, our members drop what theyâre doing to go out and help those in need,â he said. âOur brigade members donât volunteer for the recognition, but when they are recognised, the pat on the back is deeply appreciated.â

By Christopher Carter, chief executive, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network Just like everyone, I am sick and tired of the pandemic. Weâre all really over it, and over hearing about the flu and monkeypox and Japanese encephalitis and shingles and every other disease the world is currently throwing at Itâsus. little wonder that weâre all starting to feel a bit ragged around the edges. These health concerns are always on our minds, but for most of us they are not always in our faces. For one section of our community, however, the realities of our current medical demands are the very definition of the workplace.Beingsick of the pandemic doesnât mean we have to be unkind. It seems clear that we all get better health care if we do what we can to make life less hellish for the people whose job it is to keep us or make us well. Doctors, nurses and receptionists in our GP clinics and hospitals are the frontline when it comes to keeping us and well, and helping us get better when we fall sick. As well as the ebbs and surges of COVID-19 and seasonal viruses, they have to diagnose, counsel and support adults and children with a wide range of other conditions, including diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, depression, and broken bones and bruises.Andthey have to do it in teams that are perpetually short-staffed due to the same viruses that lay the rest of us low. This, of course, adds to the difficulties many of us experience when we go to book an appointment. Thereâs no doubt about it: arranging to see a primary health care professional about pretty much anything can require patience. So, stressed and worried patients combined with stressed and exhausted GPs, nurses and receptionists sounds like a recipe for conflict and frustration â and, sadly, weâre seeing exactly that play out sometimes in our region. There have been media reports of GP staff quitting their jobs after being yelled at and threatened by patients. (Thatâs not just something local, by the way. A recent report in England found that âpersistent abuse of doctors compounds the emotional toll on staff, takebitspeakwearhelpdamagesmorale,andthreatenspatientsafetyâ.)Therearesomesimplethingswecandotoout.Whenyouturnupatthesurgery,amask,maintainsocialdistanceandrespectfullytostaffâtheyknowyouâreaworried,becausetheyaretoo.Andifthingsabitlongerthanusual,well,thatâsjusthow
it is â everywhere â at the moment. If the matter isnât urgent, plan ahead to make your appointment. If you have mild respiratory symptoms, consider going to a Respiratory Clinic instead of your GP. Googling locations is easy. Itâll take the pressure off a bit. And, above all, donât be mean. Even when youâre wearing a mask, people can see when you smile.

Infotainment The hot Italian machine has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and digital radio. We enjoyed the sound output from the audio system, but turned it off most of the time to listen to the excellent sounds produced by the engine. Engines / transmissions Power comes from a turbo-petrol 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 132kW at 5500rpm, and 250newton metres of torque fromAbarth3000rpm.595Competizione has a five-speed manual gearbox at a time when almost all manuals are six-speed units. This is probably another throwback to its Fiat 500 origins and there simply wasnât a suitable six-speeder.

Driving Ahh! This is why you buy an Abarth 595 Competizione - to drive it hard and fast. Itâs a genuine Italian sports machine not simply a hot hatch. It sounds great, talks to you through the steering wheel and holds the road at speeds that may not seem possible to those who donât understand well sorted Italian suspension.
Even around town, and in the suburbs, you can have fun listening to the sound of the engine, banging it up and down through the gears and accelerating hard away from the lights. The engine is a little slow to pick up speed if itâs running below about 2000 revs, but once you get it beyond that stage it really sings along with plenty of entertaining sporting sounds. But to get the full enjoyment from it you have to take it to the country. We had a ball thumping it around bends on the roads in the hinterland behind our base on the Gold Coast. On the open roads on the far side of the hills its cruises well, but does get a bit tiring if youâre doing a long trip. Frankly passengers may not space.appreciateitbecausetherideisonthefirmside.Youdositratherhighinthecabinasthisisastubbycarandlowfrontseatswouldstealtoomuchspacefromthosesittinginthebackseats.Itâsnottoobadforthosesittingbehindapassengerinthefront,butanyonebehindatalldrivermayfindtheyareabitcrampedfor Summing up The Abarth 595 Competizione is not a car for everyone, but for those who like to get the best from a sports car it must sit very high on the list of machines to be considered. It looks good, goes like a rocket if you are prepared to work it to its full potential you will go everywhere with a smile on your face.

Styling Based on the Fiat 500, but with quite a few styling changes to give it a sporting look, the Abarth 595 Competizione does have a very individual look. It has a standout front area thatâs body coloured in its upper area and black in the lower parts, large side sills and black in the rear that follow the colouring of the front. Our test car had matte blue paint, an extra cost option. Though itâs something out of the ordinary it does look to the uninformed that the Abarth had been sitting out in strong Aussie sunshine for too many years.
Note:
Safety The Abarth 595 has ABS and stability control to help drivers to stay out of trouble. It has seven airbags, two IsoFix child seat mount points, rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The latter particularly useful in a sports hatch when correct pressures at all four corners as important if you want to fang the Abarth 595 hard.
Abarth
Interior The cabin has a 7.0-inch multifunction display, leather upholstery, carbon-fibre trim and sports pedals. It has an Abarth logo on the centre of the steering wheel. Thereâs black just about everywhere including on the dash and the gear lever housing.

Western Unitedâs first female signing Alana Cerne was as surprised as anyone that she would be the clubâs first A-League Womenâs player announced. The 19-year-old, who is still making her name for herself, was given the honour of being the first player for the club. For Cerne, she wasnât even sure she would get a contract at all. âFirstly I was hoping maybe a scholarship of something,â she said. âI wasnât even expecting a full contract to be honest, so when they came to me and said we want to sign you as our first payer, initially I was just going to ask them why, why me? âIâm very grateful for that opportunity and itâs a big thing.â Cerne has been on Unitedâs radar for a couple of years. Sheâs been part of the United development squad which has trained once a week in preparation for the move into the A-League W. She said the program had given her a taste of what to expect and opened up her eyes and made her realise she wanted to be part of the firstForsquad.Cerne soccer has always been the dream. âI started playing when I was six or seven years old with a couple of friends,â she said.
She has got a first hand experience about the culture and legacy that is in place at Calder. Calder recently won their fifth straight Nike F.C Cup title, while the club is sitting on top of the NPLW ladder with two rounds remaining. âIt is so easy, not the winning perspective, because everyone is so close and everyone has the same goals, everyone wants everyone to do well,â Cerne said. âIt has been big big couple of weeks especially with Calder, the Nike Cup and a few more games in the season. âTo think this chapter is almost over and a new one with Western it has come pretty quick to be playerandfromsigngirlsgirlssaid.thatone.infocusingCernehonest.willfinishofftheNPLWseasonbeforeontheA-LeagueseasonwhichstartsNovember.SheâshopingtobepartofthatteamondayâIwanttohopefullybeplayingandshowingIâmgoodenoughtobeatthatlevel,âsheâIâmprobablygoingtobeoneoftheyoungersoIhaveabittoprovethanalltheolderâEspeciallywithbeingthefirstwomentoforUnited,nowIhavetoshowpeopleoutsidetheclubIbelonginthatteamcanstartattheteamevenatmyage,bethetostepuptohelptheclubbesuccessful.â

In massive news for the club, Paschal has re-signed for another two seasons. The American in her first season at the club took out the golden hands award for the most assists in the championship division. âAmanda has been incredibly consistent for us this season, not only dominating her own position on court, but also guiding and mentoring our younger players as they continually develop,â senior womenâs coach Gerard Hillier said. âThe decision to lock in Amanda for another two years is as much about providing strong leadership and direction for our young squad as it is about her ability to fill up the stat sheet, which speaks for itself.â

By Tara Murray A week is a long time in sport, just ask Wyndhamâs Big V womenâs state championship side. After losing game one of their best-of-three semi final series against the McKinnon Cougars, Wyndham was going to have to make the grand final the hard way. On Saturday night, Wyndham got back into the series with a 63-58 win and to send the series to game three. With momentum, Wyndham was able to run away in the second half of game three to come away with a big 105-71 win and seal a grand final spot. Interim coach Billy Akalo said to respond in the way they had was really amazing. âWe had two elimination games and to show that resilience is really amazing,â he said. âIâm really proud of them. Thereâs more work to do and some things to improve on in the series against Bulleen.â Akalo said they kept things business as usual between game one and game two. He said there were no alarm bells ringing.
GDFL Werribee Centralsâ Geelong and District Football League season came to an end with a loss against Winchelsea. The Blues took control of the match in the ďŹrst quarter and were able to build on that lead to run away with an 18.10 (118)-9.8 (62) win. Mitchell Alush kicked three goals for Centrals and was named among the best alongside Nick Bauld and Matthew Miller. Centrals ďŹnish the season in 10th.

Akalo said game three was going to be a battle of attrition. Scores were level at half time, before Wyndham blew the game open, including a 38-12 final quarter. âWe got our running game going and opened McKinnon up, they couldnât keep up with us,â Akalo said.

Werribee hopes to ďŹnish the season on a high

Werribee put the pressure on all day. (Belinda Vitacca Photography)
By Tara Murray While ďŹnals are off the agenda, thereâs still plenty for Werribee to play for in the Victorian Football League in the ďŹnal round.Werribeeâs small ďŹnals hopes evaporated on Saturday with a loss to Essendon, with the side to ďŹnish their season this Saturday against the Northern Bullants. Werribee coach Michael Barlow said they wanted to ďŹnish the season on a high. Werribee currently sits in 11th spot. âIdeally you want to have something to play for [ďŹnals],â he said of the ďŹnal round. âWe want to ďŹnish really strongly against the Northern Bullants. âWeâve lost four games in a row, we want to get the result this week. We want to ďŹnish the highest standalone club in Victoria. That is important to us to be the benchmark moving forward into next year. âWe need to ďŹnish strong as there is currently a sour taste in our mouths. We want to ďŹnish on a high as the season has had a lot of positives.â On Saturday, it was heartbreak for Werribee against Essendon. After trading the lead in the ďŹrst half, Werribee led until the dying minute of the game. Two late goals would give the Bombers a 10.14 (74)-10.9 (69) win. Barlow said the middle two quarters cost them dearly against a side that has been one of the form teams of the competition in the back half of the year. âWe played an accomplished Essendon side with 18 AFL-listed players,â he said. âWe felt like the boyâs attitude and effort was tremendous. A bit more polish with the other side took it away from us. âIn the second and third quarters we let the game slip, with not enough contributors in those quarters. âWe were a goal and a bit up heading into the last quarter and they were kicking with a ďŹve goal breeze.â Barlow said the group did everything needed in the last quarter, including kicking two goals against the breeze but it wasnât enough. For Werribee, Tom Gribble had 31 possessions in the loss, while Jay Dahlhaus and Ollie Hanrahan kicked two goalsBarloweach.said there were two standouts, but it was a sporadic performance overall. âNick Coughlan has had a really strong back half of the year after returning from injury,â he said. âHe is just so reliable and very smart with his ball use in the back half. âOllie Hanrahan played a bit of mid and a bit forward and hit the scoreboard. âBoth players are really content playing in our Barlowprogram.âsaidthe effort was there, but it added to the array of close matches, none in which they had gotten over the line. Several of those matches have come against sides that will play ďŹnals. âThe close results are not going our way,â he said. âThree losses under seven points and had another two games under two goals, and another one in front at the 15 minute mark of the last quarter. âWe have not got a result in close games, good teams get the results at the end of the season. âIn the moment all those losses are different. We wanted some reward for effort, and every chance weâve had in close matches hasnât fallen our way.â Barlow said he takes responsibility for the inability to win close matches saying it has been their achilles heel. He said that was something they would look to work on over the preseason, with it costing them a chance to play ďŹnals. Barlow said there was plenty of good things to work on coming out of this year.
