By Matthew Sims A public health institute has co-released a report in support of introducing a second safe injecting room for Melbourne, with one of the report’s co-authors calling for further conversations to be held between drug users, including those in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, and key stakeholders about its location. Ensuring a greener and more sustainable for Maribyrnong was the focus of Monash University student Emma Ward during her time within the Victorian Parliamentary Internship Program at Footscray MP Katie Hall’s office. She has recently published a report titled ‘A Green Future for Melbourne’s Industrial Inner West’, which looked at the potential to create a greener future for Footscray’s central business district. The report proposed a number of recommendations, including refurbishing the current underused open spaces in Footscray, greening Footscray’s laneways and improving organic recycling options for businesses. Ms Hall said the report would be helpful in advocating for greener strategies for Maribyrnong moving forward. “I’m passionate about taking real action on climate change, improving our green canopy and urban forest, as well as reducing waste,” she“Emma’ssaid. award-winning report was informed by almost 200 survey responses from local residents and I’m enormously grateful for the community Maribyrnonginput.”chiefexecutive Celia Haddock said the council is looking at reviewing the Street Tree Strategy 2013 document, which will complement a range of other work. “Ensuring our city continues to support a growing population and is green and sustainable is a priority for council, and we continue to work with residents and support the delivery of key policies and strategies,” she said.“A range of improvements are proposed through the suburb as part of the draft Footscray Public Realm Plan – which more than 300 residents provided feedback on in early 2022 by sharing their ‘vision for Footscray’.“Adraftof this document is currently being finalised to share with our community. “To support green infrastructure, in line with the Climate Emergency Strategy, council is working to implement a range of changes, including energy efficiency upgrades to all council buildings and assets, including the installation of solar materials and the roll out of energy efficiency appliances including lighting, heating and cooling.”

By Matthew Sims More than a third of employers in the western suburbs of Melbourne have indicated that they are lagging behind in terms of required skills, with another third expecting a skills shortage within the next year, according to a new Victoria University [VU] report.

Australian Website Services digital director Stephen Los said he has found it hard to find locals with the required skills. “I would absolutely love to hire locally since 98 per cent of our customers are in the west, and it makes sense to have staff who live here and understand the region,” he said. Mr Los said there has been discrepancies between job needs and available skills within the west for a number of years. “The digital skills training that high school students are taught in 2022 is almost the same as the old ‘multimedia’ classes I did 20 years ago,” he said. “It gets better at university, but kids are not being properly prepared.” VU research officer Dr Melissa Tham said their evidence-based approach to boost the number of jobs in the west would be to add on to existing infrastructure. “We’re not suggesting that we have to completely reinvent the west or anything like that,” she there’swewe’ve“Withinsaid.thecontextofthewestofMelbourne,gottheseuniquechallengesbutbecausehavethisincreasedboostinthepopulation,alsoahugeopportunitythere.”

Skills shortage starting to bite

The Centre for International Research on Education Systems at the Mitchell Institute has released a report showing that close to half of the workers of Melbourne’s west must leave the west for work, while local employers have said they have been unable to find local staff with the right skills. Altona North-based business Australian Website Services has has built about 800 websites for small and medium-sized businesses including local cafes, tradies and community services, with most of its clients based in Melbourne’s west.

By Cr Jonathon Marsden I love data visualisation and the insights it can bring and so I am proud that council has just launched 10 dashboards for the community to view how council is tracking on a range of key projects, programs and services. From information on facilities, the number of planning permit applications, and tree plantings to wait times for customer enquiries, it’s all about increasing transparency and providing clear goals for our service delivery and programs. If you’re interested in the environment and sustainability like me, you can use the dashboards to view how much solar energy council is generating and how much we have reduced our emissions through solar installations.In2021-22, we generated 1515 MWh of solar electricity, and this will steadily climb as we install more solar panels across the municipality.Youcannow view a map of current solar panel installations and planned sites. The Hobsons Bay at a Glance map highlights council’s facilities and services including public toilets, libraries, community centres and sport and recreation. You can also use the map to find out about which planning zone you live in, our heritage and industrial overlays, your bin collection area and our tree planting schedule for the city. Over the last few years, we’ve invested significantly in infrastructure projects across Hobsons Bay. There are currently 380 active capital works projects – buildings, recreation and open space, roads, footpaths and cycleways – all assets which improve the environs of Hobsons Bay. You can view the Capital Works Projects map for full details on each project. The dashboards will be updated regularly, and we are keen to see how the community and business will use the data. We invite feedback on how to improve the dashboards and any other suggestions for areas of council’s work that we can track. The director has won international awards for her short films and developed the feature script in Paris during 2018, as one of six filmmakers worldwide selected for the Cannes Cinefondation Residence. But she did not want Loti Kovacic, who is not a professional actor, to have to memorise lines of script, so much of the film was developed through improvisation and later in the edit process. The film is one of 11 features launched in MIFF 2022 that have been partially funded by the festival’s premiere funding program. The festival will be a mix of city, suburban and regional screenings, with shows also streaming online.

Ray Horsburgh remembered as key contributor

The Williamstown Seagulls Football Integration Development Association [FIDA] community has remembered Ray Horsburgh AM as a valuable supporter of the club. The former Essendon Football Club president and AFL Victoria chair died on Saturday, August 6. Williamstown Seagulls FIDA president Rob Klemm PSM said Ray’s connection to the team began as a Club 500 sponsor in 2019. “As well as being a financial supporter of the Seagulls, Ray was a generous mentor and adviser to the leadership of our club as one of our club ambassadors, and advocated for us, and the Football Integration Development Association, on many occasions,” he said. “Ray’s interest in, and encouragement of, FIDA stems not only from his role as chairman of AFL Victoria, but from his service to disadvantaged youth, for which he was awarded an Order of Australia on Australia Day 2006. “His contribution to our little piece of the football world will be marked by an annual award in his name.” Rob said Ray helped with a lot of the behind-the-scenes work in administrative work in highlighting the achievements of the club.“His expertise just gave us an enormous boost,” he said. “I always felt very privileged to spend time with him.”

The film’s title is not only the names of the two main characters, in Slovenian it has an extra layer of meaning, and can be translated as My Spring. It tells the story of a young girl, Moja, from an immigrant family, who has to play the role of cultural mediator after her mother dies. Lead actor Loti Kovacic, 10, speaks English and Slovenian for the role. “I was so happy when when we found Loti, she just was perfect … You can see that she’s

Moja Vesna is the first feature for local director Sara Kern, who emigrated from Slovenia eight years ago.

It was mostly shot in St Albans by a Slovenian and Australian crew during the winter of 2021. Ms Kern said while the film is not autobiographical, she drew on her own childhood to write the script. “I kind of draw on the emotional landscape of it … there’s been a couple of deaths in my family and it just kind of affected me as a child,” she said. For recent immigrants, the experience of grief can be extremely isolating, Ms Kern said, and the film explores how Moja is able to find solace with people outside her family.

The federal government introduced legislation in Parliament last month that will ensure any working person escaping family and domestic violence will have access to 10 paid days of domestic violence leave.

Dale Wakefield, chief executive of women’s health centre and family violence support organisation GenWest, said 10 days of paid leave for victim survivors escaping family violence is a positive step towards supporting their safety and wellbeing.

Bill to provide more protection

The legislation would mean an amendment to the National Employment Standards and be a mandatory inclusion for full-time, part-time and casual workers, with hopes it will be rolled out as early as February 2023, however small businesses will have an additional six months to arrange implementation.

The BMW Z4 is a genuine sportscar not simply a convertible because it has a long bonnet and the occupants sit close to the rear wheels. The Z4 first reached us Downunder in 2004, but in this used car checkout we will begin with the introduction of the second generation from September 2009. The 2009 model was tamed slightly to be easier to live with on a daily basis. Until then it was sold to drivers willing to accept a harsh ride and ultra-fast steering in return for brilliant handling, and unwilling to accept any compromises whist achieving this. However, the gen-two Z4 has even better road grip as well as steering that all-but reads bonnet,Z4overdone.irregularjoyitthedriver’smind.Pointitattherightroad,giveabootfullandyouwillsoontosmilewiththethecarproduces.Somenervousnessstillexists,particularlyonsurfaceswhereitisbumpy,butitisn’tThestylingofthesecond-generationBMWisinstantlyrecognisable,withthesamelongshorttailand‘flame’sidesurfaces.

This time around the Z4 used a folding hardtop which looks like a fixed-head coupe when the top is up. BMW Z4s began with a 2.5 or 3.0-litre naturally-aspirated straight sixes until the company started to produce small-capacity turbo-petrol engines. Some sixes remained alongside the turbo-petrol fours until 2012, when they were replaced by big-boost turbo fours. A very special model is the Z4 35i. This was the last of the famed twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six units. It’s likely to become a classic and may increase significantly in value. Manuals have six forward gears. Autos have six, seven or eight ratios. The BMW dealer network is well established in Australia and is known for its high quality of technical training. This high-tech diagnoses and servicing are just one reason it makes a lot of sense to buy a used Z3 or Z4 that has always been serviced by an official BMW dealer. Spare parts aren’t outrageously expensive for a car in this class, but may prove to be a factor in your decision as to whether to buy an older Z4 rather than a cheaper convertible from a lower-cost maker.

What to look for Carry out your own pre-purchase inspection to the best of your ability. Once it has passed your tests call your BMW dealer. Infotainment The hot Italian machine has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and digital radio. We enjoyed the sound output from the audio system, but turned it off most of the time to listen to the excellent sounds produced by the engine. Engines / transmissions Power comes from a turbo-petrol 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 132kW at 5500rpm, and 250newton metres of torque fromAbarth3000rpm.595Competizione has a five-speed manual gearbox at a time when almost all manuals are six-speed units. This is probably another throwback to its Fiat 500 origins and there simply wasn’t a suitable six-speeder.

Styling Based on the Fiat 500, but with quite a few styling changes to give it a sporting look, the Abarth 595 Competizione does have a very individual look. It has a standout front area that’s body coloured in its upper area and black in the lower parts, large side sills and black in the rear that follow the colouring of the front. Our test car had matte blue paint, an extra cost option. Though it’s something out of the ordinary it does look to the uninformed that the Abarth had been sitting out in strong Aussie sunshine for too many years.

Fiat’s Abarth goes like a rocket

Interior The cabin has a 7.0-inch multifunction display, leather upholstery, carbon-fibre trim and sports pedals. It has an Abarth logo on the centre of the steering wheel. There’s black just about everywhere including on the dash and the gear lever housing.

Driving Ahh! This is why you buy an Abarth 595 Competizione - to drive it hard and fast. It’s a genuine Italian sports machine not simply a hot hatch. It sounds great, talks to you through the steering wheel and holds the road at speeds that may not seem possible to those who don’t understand well sorted Italian suspension. Even around town, and in the suburbs, you can have fun listening to the sound of the engine, banging it up and down through the gears and accelerating hard away from the lights. The engine is a little slow to pick up speed if it’s running below about 2000 revs, but once you get it beyond that stage it really sings along with plenty of entertaining sporting sounds. But to get the full enjoyment from it you have to take it to the country. We had a ball thumping it around bends on the roads in the hinterland behind our base on the Gold Coast. On the open roads on the far side of the hills its cruises well, but does get a bit tiring if you’re doing a long trip. Summing up The Abarth 595 Competizione is not a car for everyone, but for those who like to get the best from a sports car it must sit very high on the list of machines to be considered. It looks good, goes like a rocket if you are prepared to work it to its full potential you will go everywhere with a smile on your face.

In the other final, Werribee Centrals will play Manor Lakes in a knockout semi final. In division 2, Wyndhamvale took the points against Braybrook-Albanvale after the latter forfeited.Laverton finished their season with a 9.1 (55)-3.7 (25). Five goals in the second quarter was where the Magpies did all the damage. Breannen Bingham and Shannon Blake kicked two goals. Lydia Jenkins was named their best. Jessica Mudie was the Roadrunners best. Point Cook Centrals suffered a rare loss to Caroline Springs, with the Lakers winning, 4.4 (28)-0.4 (4). The Lakers kicked three of their four goals in the first half to take control. Point Cook Centrals will play West Footscray for a spot in the grand final in the first week of finals.

“We’ve struggled to stop the momentum,” he said. “Sides get away from us in 15 to 20 minute bursts. “We spoke about limiting the damage. When sides get momentum we need to create stoppages so they’re only getting two to three instead of four or five goals.” On Saturday, the Devils were made to pay for a poor third quarter against Parkside, losing 12.15 (87)-8.10 (58). Battistella said it was a fair representation of where the two sides were at. “They hurt us in the third quarter,” he said. “Outside of that it was fairly even.

Under-19 Falcons flying high after capturing title

By Tara Murray The incredible legacy of the City West Falcons continues to grow with the club claiming its sixth Victorian Netball League Championship title.Already the most successful club in the competition’s history, the Falcons have now won as many top grade premierships as the other teams combined. Throw in another three grand final appearances, they’ve made the final game of the season nine out of the 12 seasons. On Wednesday night, it was all about the Falcons. They started by winning the under-19 premiership comfortably, before stepping up for the championship grand final against the Geelong Cougars. After playing the best ever VNL game in the semi finals according to Falcons coach Marg Lind, it was another thriller in the grand final. The Falcons had to come from behind, to get the 49-47 Havingwin.been part of the competition since day one, Lind has seen a lot of things on the court. But after the two premierships, she was left speechless about what they had achieved. It exceeded all their expectations heading into the“Whatseason.anight,” she said. “I have no idea how we did that. “I thought they would either blow us out of the water or just a nail biter. Credit to Geelong they never gave up. “It feels amazing. We work hard. “And we got a bit more organised on the line on our centre pass... We had a couple of key focus points in the last and paid off.” Zoe Davies was named best on court. She received the same award in the 2018 championship win as well. Western United stunned in Australia Cup upset

SPORT The magic of the Australia Cup was on show on Sunday as Western United was knocked out of the competition by National Premier League side Sydney United 58. The A-League champions were left stunned as the New South Wales side claimed the win 4-3 on Unitedpenalties.madetwo changes to the side that beat Melbourne Victory in the round of 32 with Ben Collins making his second senior start in place of Leo Lacroix, who was managed with hamstring soreness. Dylan Pierias replaced Nicolas Milanovic in the starting line up. It was United, who was competing in the last 16 of the tournament for the first time, who had the better of the attacking shots early. United hit the woodwork three times in the first half, before Connor Pain finally put one in the back of the net late in the first half. Tariq Maia levelled the scores just after half time to get the hosts back into the game. United continued to create chances for the remainder of the match, but neither team could find a winner and the match headed to extra time. Both sides had chances to win the match during extra time, but the shot was wide. Scores were still locked at 1-1 at the end of extra time so the game headed to penalties. It’s the third time Sydney had been involved in a penalty shoot out in the Australia Cup competition, having gone 1-1. It was Western United’s first penalty shoot out in this competition.

By Tara Murray Western United’s first female signing Alana Cerne was as surprised as anyone that she would be the club’s first A-League Women’s player announced. The 19-year-old, who is still making her name for herself, was given the honour of being the first player for the club. For Cerne, she wasn’t even sure she would get a contract at all. “Firstly I was hoping maybe a scholarship of something,” she said. “I wasn’t even expecting a full contract to be honest, so when they came to me and said we want to sign you as our first payer, initially I was just going to ask them why, why me? “I’m very grateful for that opportunity and it’s a big thing.” Cerne has been on United’s radar for a couple of years. Altona aiming to bounce back after final defeat

Altona Gators played well, but not well enough to come away with a win in the Big V women’s division 2 semi final on Saturday night. With a grand final spot on the line, the Gators pushed the Mornington Breakers all the way, falling short 55-48. Gators coach Cameron Wilkosz said they were beaten by a very good side. “Mornington came out and did what they did best,” he said. “We did what we could do but it wasn’t enough in the end. “For the first half we were handing in essentially. Mornington are a tough side and on their day are really hard to beat.” Wilkosz said they came into the game with a game plan with four key focuses. He said they stuck to them for the most part. “At the start of the game we had a game plan, with four things on the board,” he said. “We have a chance of winning the game. We had to win at least three of the four of them. We were able to get three of the four, but we were still a bit short. “We didn’t have our best game, the final score shows seven points, but we didn’t play ourThebest.”Gators won the last quarter 17-11 which will give them some confidence. Their hopes of coming from behind to get the win were dented with captain Jessica Rarity and leading scorer Sharna Appleby both fouled out. Wilkosz said they know they are a much better team with both of those players on the court.Appleby top scored on Saturday night with 15 points, the only Gators player to hit double figures.Wilkosz said if they were to make it through to the grand final series against the Breakers, they were confident that they could beat them. Before then, the Gators face the RMIT Redbacks in a preliminary final this weekend. The winner of the game goes through to a best-of-three grand final series. The two teams met in the first week of the finals, with the Gators winning 80-53 on that occasion.Wilkosz said they were hoping to play like that again this weekend. “We’ve beaten them three from three this season,” he said. “We got in with confidence, but not “There’sarrogance.adistinct difference and hopefully we can beat them for a fourth time.”
