The ‘Caring For Our Patch’ short film was funded by a $7000 grant from Melbourne Water, with the initiative to promote healthy waterways. The film details the dangers of spreading weed seeds and advises residents on how to combat weed infestation, with animated watercolour artwork captured by video producer DanielHolowkoWilliams.saidher work as an artist was all about educating people on ecology, so working on the film came naturally.“Itfitsperfectly in many ways, as I’m from the area and care about it deeply.” Landcare group member Shane Scanlan wrote the grant application for the project, but sadly passed away before the films completion. “It’s a lovely legacy of his contributions to the Landcare group,” Holowko said. Watch the film: https://vimeo. com/735278839 Olivia Condous By Olivia Condous A Melton South woman has been prosecuted by the RSPCA for a “heartbreaking” case of animal neglect. The woman faced Sunshine Magistrates Court on August 5, where she was handed a 12-month community corrections order and banned from owning a dog for 10 years, RSPCA said. She was also ordered to pay costs of $1920 and will serve 200 hours of community work under her corrections order. The accused was in charge of a great dane cross dog named Rocky, who was found by RSPCA inspectors at a property in Melton South in poor condition. According to the RSPCA, Rocky was “extremely” emaciated, recumbent and barely responsive.Hewas seized and transported to the RSPCA Burwood Clinic, where he was treated for hypothermia, emaciation, dehydration andDespitefleas. his condition improving after intensive care and treatment, Rocky passed away three days later. A veterinary assessment concluded that Rocky would have been losing significant body condition for at least two weeks and blood tests revealed he was anemic, showing clinical signs of prolonged starvation. The assessment concluded that a lay person would have been able to recognise he needed veterinary treatment. Under thePrevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986, any person in charge of an animal must provide food, water and shelter, as well as appropriate husbandry and veterinary attention as needed. RSPCA team leader Karen Collier said that the case had been particularly heartbreaking and the neglect to which Rocky was subjected was utterly unacceptable. “No animal should be left to suffer in the manner Rocky would have experienced. I will never understand how anyone can let an animal deteriorate to this point and stand idly by,” Ms Collier said. “While this isn’t the outcome we had hoped for, I do take solace in the fact that Rocky spent his last days receiving the love and care he so deserved.”

A Moorabool landcare group is spreading an important message in a colourfulBlackwoodway.and Barry’s Reef Landcare Group have created a film featuring watercolour artworks to educate residents on the importance of weed control.Landcare member and artist Kathy Holowko was the painter behind the film and said the group wanted a creative, engaging piece in order to draw attention to the message behind it. “So often these calls to action and awareness can be a bit dry, so the aim was to make it really visually interesting, so that people will want to watch the full three minutes and listen to the message,” Holowko said.

trending upwards, after the latest wave of COVID-19 cases has put pressure on Victoria’s health system. The state has seen a 16 per cent increase in first response numbers compared to the same time last year and a record-breaking 97,928 code one cases in the latest quarter. Ambulance Victoria acting metro region director Jess McGowan said the pandemic continued to be an unprecedented pressure on Victoria’s health system. “We’re working hard to relieve pressure in the system with more paramedics on the road and more resources at hospitals to help offload patients faster,” Ms McGowan said. Victorian Ambulance Union general secretary Danny Hill said for regions on the Melbourne periphery, response times increased due to local ambulances being drawn in towards the city at busy times.

“The strain on hospitals means that crews are ramped longer, so the crews are stuck in the city. It leaves those towns uncovered,” Mr Hill“That’ssaid. just a by-product of the very steep increase in demand right across Melbourne.”

Companionship in the community

By Olivia Condous Ambulance response times across Melton and Moorabool have once again been impacted by the latest COVID-19 surge, with the number of cases reaching the highest ever recorded.

Mr Dinning said the rollout of DVMS is in addition to a major upgrade program undertaken by CitiPower and Powercor that has led to an increase in unrestricted rooftop solar connections approvals from around 60 per cent at the start of 2021 to more than 92 per cent in “This2022.isone part of our five-year Future Networks program, which is about supporting customers to connect more solar, batteries and EVs, lower their power bills and reduce their environmental footprint,” Mr Dinning said. “By using this smarter system, we expect that more than 95 per cent of our customers who apply to export solar will be able to connect and export excess energy, allowing more homes and businesses to share cleaner energy across their communities.”

By Olivia Condous Development continues in the Parwan Employment Precinct with the addition of gas supply, in order to attract further industrial agribusiness to the area. The Parwan City Gate Gas Connection Project was completed this month, funded by $2.7 million from the state government with additional funding provided by Moorabool council and local farm L&G Meats. The new connection will service the Parwan Employment Precinct as well as the wider Bacchus Marsh area. The Parwan Employment Precinct project is an initiative from Moorabool council and the Victorian Planning Authority to develop the area south of Bacchus Marsh into an agribusiness hub. The plans to develop further infrastructure in Parwan serve the goal of attracting significant levels of new industrial and agricultural business investment to the region and capitalise on existing business in theThearea.project aims to help reduce the number of residents leaving the Shire for employment opportunities by potentially providing more than 1500 jobs and will provide an estimated economic benefit of $186 million to the region.Moorabool council has stated it will continue to advocate for more funding for the Parwan Employment Precinct, with electricity connection still needed to complete the services on site. Moorabool mayor Tom Sullivan said the council was “very pleased” to have the connection completed. “Parwan Employment Precinct is a vital piece of land in our shire, in that it will boost economic and employment growth in our region,” Cr Sullivan said. “We will be able to attract industrial business and agribusiness and create around 1500 new jobs, this is not possible without services to the precinct though.”

Regional Development Minister Harriet Shing said the new connection lead to a boost in Victoria’s agricultural industry. “This new gas connection will enable more businesses to be established in the Parwan Employment Precinct, helping create more jobs and stimulate regional Victoria’s agriculture industry.”

Victorian Socialist Western Metropolitan candidate Liz Walsh said the main message of the protest was to state that communities of the western suburbs “don’t suffer bigots kindly”. “We think it’s outrageous that Bernie Finn, who was expelled from the Liberal Party for his reactionary views on women and trans people in particular, has been replaced by someone who’s basically cut from the same cloth,” she said. “We started on the main road and got lots of great support from locals driving by, lots of beeps, we had banners about defending and contactedthechantPartystandingWyndhamTVofthepeopletransgenderDeemingrights.”extendingabortionrightsandsupportingtransInhertimeasacouncillorforMelton,Crhasbeenavocaladvocateagainstpeopleinsportandtransgenderaccessingsingle-sexbathrooms.CrDeemingisalsoaneventcoordinatorforMarchForTheBabiesanti-abortionrally,whichMrFinnisthepresident.Avideocapturedbylocalmediaoutletshowedagroupofprotestorsbesidetheroadshoutinganti-Liberalchants,includingseveralrepetitionsofaincludingprofanity.AccordingtoMsWalsh,thevenuecalledonpolicetoasktheprotestorstoleave.TheVictorianofficeoftheLiberalPartywasforcomment.

They continued to see each other after the girl turned 18 and finished school, but she ended things a few months later. The woman came forward to police in 2017 and Korczynski was charged three years later. He pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court earlier this month to a charge of sexual penetration of a child under his care. Korczynski’s offending was “wholly inappropriate” and there was an enormous power imbalance in play, Judge Fiona Todd said on Friday, August 12. He knew he was doing the wrong thing as other teachers called him out on his behaviour, the judge said in her sentencing remarks. The woman still feels intense shame, embarrassment and isolation as a result of Korczynski’s actions, Judge Todd said. She accepted the 49-year-old had no prior convictions, he had not reoffended, and he had been stripped of his teaching licence as a result of the charges.

As Melton’s energy demand grows, we’re working hard to upgrade our network to keep electricity supplies reliable for everyone. These works will improve capacity and increase reliability for people of Melton and the surrounding region.

As we complete these works, you may notice disruptions to local parking and traffic. Minimising disruptions as much as possible is a big priority for us, and we will work closely with residents and businesses during the delivery of these works.

A Melton councillor has continued to cause a stir, sparking a political protest at a Liberal Party fundraiser event in Tarneit on August 8. The Victorian Socialist Party staged a protest at a Victorian Liberal Party dinner on Monday evening August 8 at Hotel520, with a group of about 30 protestors chanting outside the venue protesting the preselection of Melton councillor Moira Deeming. Cr Deeming was officially endorsed for preselection by the Liberal Party for the Western Metropolitan seat last month, sparking backlash due to her anti-abortion and single-sex rights views. Controversial MP Bernie Finn previously represented the Liberal Party as Western Metropolitan MP but was expelled from the party earlier this year after he posted a string of anti-abortion social media posts.

inaugural event a glowing success. It seems only logical, as the natural beauty and innate peace of regional Victoria is a setting that has attracted many artists away from the city life. Ballan local and award-winning musician Heather Marsh, who performs under the alias of Breckin, said living in Moorabool provided artists with the “literal and figurative” space to let their creativity flourish. “Out here, there can be more of a sense of space and freedom to carve out your own path … I felt after moving to the country that I had more headspace to be able to be creative.”Eventhough Marsh is an established artist who has lived in the shire for many years, the Hide and Seek festival furthered her connections with other creatives in the area, since collaborating with a local sound engineer and other musicians. “None of these things would have happened if I hadn’t been involved, both as an audience member and as an artist, in the festival.” Marsh teamed up with Moser when she opened the festival in Blackwood, asking her to play fiddle on her track named after the town. Moser said while the festival was wrapped up, the music community hoped it was the beginning of bigger and better things for live music in Moorabool. “It’s very much the beginning … Hopefully, it’ll build from here.”

Infotainment The hot Italian machine has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and digital radio. We enjoyed the sound output from the audio system, but turned it off most of the time to listen to the excellent sounds produced by the engine. This is probably another throwback to its Fiat 500 origins and there simply wasn’t a suitable six-speeder.

Styling Based on the Fiat 500, but with quite a few styling changes to give it a sporting look, the Abarth 595 Competizione does have a very individual look. It has a standout front area that’s body coloured in its upper area and black in the lower parts, large side sills and black in the rear that follow the colouring of the front. Our test car had matte blue paint, an extra cost option. Though it’s something out of the ordinary it does look to the uninformed that the Abarth had been sitting out in strong Aussie sunshine for too many years.

Safety The Abarth 595 has ABS and stability control to help drivers to stay out of trouble. It has seven airbags, two IsoFix child seat mount points, rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The latter particularly useful in a sports hatch when correct pressures at all four corners as important if you want to fang the Abarth 595 hard. Driving Ahh! This is why you buy an Abarth 595 Competizione - to drive it hard and fast. It’s a genuine Italian sports machine not simply a hot hatch. It sounds great, talks to you through the steering wheel and holds the road at speeds that may not seem possible to those who don’t understand well sorted Italian suspension. Even around town, and in the suburbs, you can have fun listening to the sound of the engine, banging it up and down through the gears and accelerating hard away from the lights. The engine is a little slow to pick up speed if it’s running below about 2000 revs, but once you get it beyond that stage it really sings along with plenty of entertaining sporting sounds. But to get the full enjoyment from it you have to take it to the country. We had a ball thumping it around bends on the roads in the hinterland behind our base on the Gold Coast. On the open roads on the far side of the hills its cruises well, but does get a bit tiring if you’re doing a long trip. It looks good, goes like a rocket if you are prepared to work it to its full potential you will go everywhere with a smile on your face.

Falcons claim championship win

By Tara Murray The incredible legacy of the City West Falcons continues to grow with the club claiming its sixth Victorian Netball League Championship title.Already the most successful club in the competition’s history, the Falcons have now won as many top grade premierships as the other teams combined. Throw in another three grand final appearances, they’ve made the final game of the season nine out of the 12 seasons. On Wednesday night, it was all about the Falcons. They started by winning the under-19 premiership comfortably, before stepping up for the championship grand final against the Geelong Cougars. After playing the best ever VNL game in the semi finals according to Falcons coach Marg Lind, it was another thriller in the grand final. The Falcons had to come from behind, to get the 49-47 Havingwin.been part of the competition since day one, Lind has seen a lot of things on the court. But after the two premierships, she was left speechless about what they had achieved. It exceeded all their expectations heading into the“Whatseason.anight,” she said. “I have no idea how we did that. “I thought they would either blow us out of the water or just a nail biter. Credit to Geelong they never gave up. “It feels amazing. We work hard. We come together as a group a few times a week and we made that big commitment which is hard in the middle of winter.

“We spoke to Uneeq about what she was afraid of, it was really her first final at VNL level in champ,” Lind said. “She said I don’t know. I said if you’re going to be like that we’re going to lose anyhow, just relax, have a bit of fun, get a bit involved and that certainly helped her.”

“And we got a bit more organised on the line on our centre pass... We had a couple of key focus points in the last and paid off.” Zoe Davies was named best on court. She received the same award in the 2018 championship win as well. Lind said Davies performance was heroic, especially after an ankle injury in the last quarter.Shesaid the whole playing group had done a massive amount of work to get them where theyLindwere.was also full of praise for their supporters.“Someone said it was like we had eight players on the court, I think it was more like we had 10 players actually.”

Burnside Springs United wasn’t going to knock back the opportunity to join the Victorian Turf Cricket Association this season. The club had already been pre-approved to join the competition for 2023-24, but when a vacancy came up, the club had no hesitation in sayingPresidentyes.

Aaron Borg said moving to a turf competition was the next step for the growing club.“It’s really exciting,” he said. “It has been on the cards for the last couple of years. We did a strategic plan. “With a growing number of players we wanted to have that pathway for the juniors, women and senior men as well. “That’s experiencing turf cricket and playing in the VTCA. Giving them a chance to play properUnitedcricket.”willhave four sides in the VTCA, their men’s first and second XIs, their women’s first XI and their under-18 boys team. There other teams will remain in the same competitions, with the club looking to field three women’s teams overall.

Darley will take plenty of positives out of the first week of Ballarat Football League women’s finals, despite losing to Redan on Sunday. The two standout teams all season, both teams were keen to get the upper hand and the better run to the grand final. The Lions kicked four goals in the first quarter to take control of the match. After that point it was five goals to three, with the Lions winning, 9.10 (64)-3.4 (22). Devils coach Jack Hanneysee said there wasn’t much difference between the two teams on the “Weday.geta second chance and we will look to win through that way,” he said. “It was very wet and very slippery. They had a couple of players get off the chain, but apart from that there was nothing in it. “The girls did pretty well and they can hold their heads up high.” Hanneysee said the conditions helped Redan. He said his side had one training session in the wet all year, while Redan, which was playing on their home deck, was used to the wet weather and made the most of it.

Not that he probably needs it, but Honolua Bay picked up the first of the golden tickets into the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship with a slick victory in the Westburn Grant Free For All at Melton on Saturday night. It was a return to Saturday night racing to Melton after a number weeks away due to works on the track. And it was the star pacer Honolua Bay which made it seven-straight wins since joining the Emma Stewart stable with a front-running success in the $24,000 feature.Thereigning Victorian four-year-old entire or gelding of the year led for most of the 2240m journey, with quarters of 30sec, 29.6sec, 27.5sec and 27.8sec leading to a mile rate of 1:53.2min. They don’t have to be racing week in, week out trying to earn a spot.“He’s earnt his spot.” Saturday night saw Pitt have his first drive of Honolua Bay, who scored a first-up success for Nathan Jack in the Popular Alm Sprint at Kilmore on July 23.
