Barro asks for extension
By Holly McGuinness Residents’ hopes that underground fires that have been burning for nearly three years at the Kealba Landfill could soon be extinguished have been dashed. The Barro Group, which runs the landfill, has submitted an application to the Environmental Protection Authority asking for an extension to the deadline given for the fires to be put out. The current deadline is August 22, but EPA told residents at a community meeting last week that Barro has fallen behind schedule. Residents were told the Barro Group wants an extension until February to have the last hot spot out. The EPA originally gave Barro until July last year to have all the fires out. The EPA must assess the submission and will decide whether it will be accepted. EPA chief executive Lee Miezis said the organisation is on the community’s side and the response from Barro Group is unacceptable.Hesaidthey were unsure if penalties would be imposed on the Barro Group. “Our interest is in making sure this company is doing absolutely everything they can to put these hotspots out as quickly and safely as possible,” he said. “We’ll assess [Barro Group’s extension application] as we are required to do so under law but our interest is if they have done everything they can that they need to do for us to be satisfied. If they haven’t, then there will be an escalation and enforcement action by the authorities.”
Hanna’s original piano was featured in the Melbourne Arts Centre’s ‘I’m Yours’ exhibition, before being moved to St Albans for the community to enjoy.

At the community meeting, the EPA advised residents may see an increase in odour reports and the intensity of the smell in the coming Residentsweeks.have long complained about odours coming from the site and the impact it’s had on their physical and mental health.
A musicalheartfeltgift
A brightly coloured piano is once again taking centre stage in the heart of St Albans.Artist Tadros Hanna designed the piano after another of his colourful pianos was destroyed by vandals. Brimbank council approached Hanna to design a replacement for the piano, which sat at the corner of Main and Alfrieda streets in St Albans. Council offered to fund the replacement but Hanna insisted on paying for the paints and supplies. “I hope everyone will enjoy [the piano] as I have sent this from my heart to every other heart in the community,” Hanna“Thesaid.message here for the community is to be kind and have hope, there’s so many things happening in the world around us that are so upsetting but to bring art here is a way to bring the community together, to send a message of peace and love.”
Brimbank councillor and affected resident Virginia Tachos said this latest application for extension is yet another blow to the community.“Peoplehave really been suffering with worsening odour and been told to just ‘leave their home’ by the EPA when it gets really bad.
“Highly insensitive and patronising comments don’t help – the EPA should be protecting us from the odour.” Barro’s license is currently suspended by the EPA meaning it can’t accept waste. As reported by Star Weekly, the Barro Group said in June it was unsure whether it would reopen the site once the fires are extinguished.

Cash for vapes incentive canned for now
“What we essentially have here is a health organisation working hand-in-hand with a tobacco giant responsible for the deaths of millions and millions of people to incentivise pharmacists into pushing a harmful vaping product,” Ms Price said. Ms Price hopes for the scheme will cease entirely and encouraged people to seek professional advice about e-cigarettes. “Have a chat to your GP about quitting nicotine. We are here to help, and I can tell you that you will almost instantly feel so much better and put yourself on a new, healthier path,” she Devonshiresaid.Pharmacy in Sunshine was not involved with the cash for vapes program and isn’t entirely in support of it but pharmacist Lily Wang feels it could be a good opportunity to open the dialogue and support those with nicotine addictions.
Exciting look inside giant warehouse
The Ravenhall site is the biggest in the country, spanning the size of double the Melbourne Cricket Ground and has the capacity to hold up to one million larger items. Ms Adams said she was excited to show the “seamless” process of packing items to tour attendees.“Theyare able to pack up those items in literally under 30 seconds for single orders, which is just so impressive.”
Karen Price had concerns the move would create a void in public trust of their local healthcare providers.
Just as nicotine patches are purchased through chemists where professional advice is accessible, the same could occur with vapes. “It gives us the opportunity to talk to them about it and suggest quitting along with their other options,” Ms Wang said. “If they use vapes with nicotine they could start being suggested other products to quit and then slowly use vapes without nicotine to gradually reduce the habit.”

Briefs Park petition A Brimbank councillor is calling for more people to sign a petition aimed at improving pedestrian access to Brimbank Park. The petition, created by councillor Virginia Tachos, has received over 1200 signatures over the past two years. “Unless you have a car, there is very little to zero public transport getting you [to Brimbank Park] and once you are there you hope that the river levels are low if you are on a bike or on foot coming from Kealba or St Albans or Keilor,” the petition states. Cr Tachos said the park in its current state is becoming a safety risk to residents who often can not access it. “Despite years of advocacy , petitions and community suffering lack of access – nothing has been done and the risks remain”. Parks Victoria district manager Craig Bray said the organisation is aware of community concerns about flooding in Brimbank Park. “Where water levels rise, pedestrian access is be restricted for safety reasons. The park can be accessed by vehicle on these days and visitors are advised to observe signage and stay out of fenced-off areas. Given Brimbank Park is located on both sides of the river, there are approximately eight to 10 kilometres of walking tracks accessible to pedestrians when the fords are closed on the Kealba and Keilor sides. “We’re always looking upgrade opportunities at Brimbank Park, and have picnic areas, barbecues and toilets upgrades planned for this year as part of the Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program.” Level crossing update Construction is powering ahead in Deer Park as the state government works to remove the Mt Derrimut Road level crossing and instal a new train station. The new replacement station set to open in 2024 will include two accessible elevated platforms, an integrated bus interchange, improved pedestrian and cycling paths, landscaping and “modern” passenger facilities. Commuters using the old station have access to a 250-space temporary car park during construction. The crossing will be replaced by a 1.2 kilometre rail bridge. Construction workers will begin drilling 8.3 metre holes to support the foundations of the rail bridge in the coming months. The all-purpose cleaning equipment manufacturer has sponsored Mr de Castella for the run, providing $5000 towards his run, with all funds raised contributing towards the Indigenous Marathon Foundation [IMF].
Community governance workshops
Former world champion marathon runner, current IMF director and Lachlan’s father Robert de Castella founded the organisation in 2009 to use running to celebrate Indigenous resilience and achievement and create inspirational Indigenous leaders. Mr de Castella said he ran with a weighted vest for the first part of his training and has now been training with the vacuum strapped to his back. “I would run once or twice a week,” he said.

inaugural event a glowing success. It seems only logical, as the natural beauty and innate peace of regional Victoria is a setting that has attracted many artists away from the city life. Ballan local and award-winning musician Heather Marsh, who performs under the alias of Breckin, said living in Moorabool provided artists with the “literal and figurative” space to let their creativity flourish. “Out here, there can be more of a sense of space and freedom to carve out your own path … I felt after moving to the country that I had more headspace to be able to be creative.”Eventhough Marsh is an established artist who has lived in the shire for many years, the Hide and Seek festival furthered her connections with other creatives in the area, since collaborating with a local sound engineer and other musicians. “None of these things would have happened if I hadn’t been involved, both as an audience member and as an artist, in the festival.” Marsh teamed up with Moser when she opened the festival in Blackwood, asking her to play fiddle on her track named after the town. Moser said while the festival was wrapped up, the music community hoped it was the beginning of bigger and better things for live music in Moorabool. “It’s very much the beginning … Hopefully, it’ll build from here.”

“I’m looking forward to talking about what motivated me to write the book, about the characters and their behaviours, the meaning of the cover of the book. And I’ll do a few readings from it as well. During the presentation Di Pietro will delve into her process as a debutante writer and especially her experiences with the publishing side of the industry.
W hen Franca Di Pietro began working on the idea that would become her first novel, ‘Life with a Psychopath’, she knew that not only did she want to tackle the topic, she also wanted to bring a sense of hope and positivity to the book. “I’m so interested in the topics of stalking, obsession, domestic violence, and I really wanted to get important messages out there to people,” Di Pietro said. “It’s really topical at the moment and I thought it’d be a great idea to write about somebody involved in a relationship like that. “A lot of books I’ve read around this topic focus on all the bad things that happen. And that’s discussed in my book as well, but I wanted this to be a positive message to people involved in this sort of situation, or who know somebody who is. “So I haven’t made it too dark. I don’t want to give too much away, but this story’s more about triumph.” Di Pietro has been in love with writing since Direlationshipsknowingintothestartanecdotally.people’sasprimaryschool,originallyconceivedthenovelacollectionofshortstorieslooselybasedonexperiencesshe’dobservedandheardButasherworkgatheredsteamaroundtheoftheCOVID-19pandemicshedecidedideascouldworkevenbettercombinedonecompletestory.“Iwasinspiredtowriteaboutthisbypeoplethathavebeeninvolvedinlikethis,thingsI’vewitnessed,”Pietrosaid.“It’sbeenaworkinprogressforabout

By Christopher Carter, chief executive, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network Just like everyone, I am sick and tired of the pandemic. We’re all really over it, and over hearing about the flu and monkeypox and Japanese encephalitis and shingles and every other disease the world is currently throwing at It’sus. little wonder that we’re all starting to feel a bit ragged around the edges. These health concerns are always on our minds, but for most of us they are not always in our faces. For one section of our community, however, the realities of our current medical demands are the very definition of the workplace.Beingsick of the pandemic doesn’t mean we have to be unkind. It seems clear that we all get better health care if we do what we can to make life less hellish for the people whose job it is to keep us or make us well. Doctors, nurses and receptionists in our GP clinics and hospitals are the frontline when it comes to keeping us and well, and helping us get better when we fall sick. As well as the ebbs and surges of COVID-19 and seasonal viruses, they have to diagnose, counsel and support adults and children with a wide range of other conditions, including diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, depression, and broken bones and bruises.Andthey have to do it in teams that are perpetually short-staffed due to the same viruses that lay the rest of us low. This, of course, adds to the difficulties many of us experience when we go to book an appointment. There’s no doubt about it: arranging to see a primary health care professional about pretty much anything can require patience. So, stressed and worried patients combined with stressed and exhausted GPs, nurses and receptionists sounds like a recipe for conflict and frustration – and, sadly, we’re seeing exactly that play out sometimes in our region. There have been media reports of GP staff quitting their jobs after being yelled at and threatened by patients. (That’s not just something local, by the way. A recent report in England found that “persistent abuse of doctors compounds the emotional toll on staff, takebitspeakwearhelpdamagesmorale,andthreatenspatientsafety”.)Therearesomesimplethingswecandotoout.Whenyouturnupatthesurgery,amask,maintainsocialdistanceandrespectfullytostaff–theyknowyou’reaworried,becausetheyaretoo.Andifthingsabitlongerthanusual,well,that’sjusthow

Styling Based on the Fiat 500, but with quite a few styling changes to give it a sporting look, the Abarth 595 Competizione does have a very individual look. It has a standout front area that’s body coloured in its upper area and black in the lower parts, large side sills and black in the rear that follow the colouring of the front. Our test car had matte blue paint, an extra cost option. Though it’s something out of the ordinary it does look to the uninformed that the Abarth had been sitting out in strong Aussie sunshine for too many years.
Infotainment The hot Italian machine has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and digital radio. We enjoyed the sound output from the audio system, but turned it off most of the time to listen to the excellent sounds produced by the engine. Engines / transmissions Power comes from a turbo-petrol 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 132kW at 5500rpm, and 250newton metres of torque fromAbarth3000rpm.595Competizione has a five-speed manual gearbox at a time when almost all manuals are six-speed units. This is probably another throwback to its Fiat 500 origins and there simply wasn’t a suitable six-speeder.

Safety The Abarth 595 has ABS and stability control to help drivers to stay out of trouble. It has seven airbags, two IsoFix child seat mount points, rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The latter particularly useful in a sports hatch when correct pressures at all four corners as important if you want to fang the Abarth 595 hard. Driving Ahh! This is why you buy an Abarth 595 Competizione - to drive it hard and fast. It’s a genuine Italian sports machine not simply a hot hatch. It sounds great, talks to you through the steering wheel and holds the road at speeds that may not seem possible to those who don’t understand well sorted Italian suspension. Even around town, and in the suburbs, you can have fun listening to the sound of the engine, banging it up and down through the gears and accelerating hard away from the lights. The engine is a little slow to pick up speed if it’s running below about 2000 revs, but once you get it beyond that stage it really sings along with plenty of entertaining sporting sounds. But to get the full enjoyment from it you have to take it to the country. We had a ball thumping it around bends on the roads in the hinterland behind our base on the Gold Coast. On the open roads on the far side of the hills its cruises well, but does get a bit tiring if you’re doing a long trip. Frankly passengers may not space.appreciateitbecausetherideisonthefirmside.Youdositratherhighinthecabinasthisisastubbycarandlowfrontseatswouldstealtoomuchspacefromthosesittinginthebackseats.It’snottoobadforthosesittingbehindapassengerinthefront,butanyonebehindatalldrivermayfindtheyareabitcrampedfor Summing up The Abarth 595 Competizione is not a car for everyone, but for those who like to get the best from a sports car it must sit very high on the list of machines to be considered. It looks good, goes like a rocket if you are prepared to work it to its full potential you will go everywhere with a smile on your face.

Vassiliadis said last year had driven the side this year in more than one way. While it’s a very different side to 12 months ago, the same belief was there. “Last year and sitting first showed we were on the right path,” he said. “We knew it would be a challenge psychology and emotionally, but we did the work to get back to the same point. “But it also meant anyone else had the chance to become stronger. We had to do more than them. “Credit must go to the footballers and the staff. They have so much to be proud of.” Vassiliadis said the match with Strathmore was a weird one played under lights. Scores were locked at 0-0 at half time, before Omar Ammache and Jack Wardle scored in the second half to seal a win for the Georgies. “We were playing a team that was desperate for a point,” he said. “Our calmness, professionalism an quality got us over the line. “We did what we had to do. A championship would be icing on the cake. The Georgies were set to face Whittlesea United on Sunday in the second last round, after deadline. “We’re appreciate what it means getting a championship in any code,” Vassiliadis said. “We’re in a position we will likely need to win both our matches, with full respect to Essendon Royals, we’re confident they’ll win their next two matches. “Two more wins will also give us the most successful Georgie Cross season since 1972. “We’ll stick to the principles and work reallyMeanwhilehard.” in state league 4 west, Westside Strikers are one step closer to the title and promotion.Awinon Saturday Bell Park, which was after deadline, would have been enough to secure the title and promotion. The incredible legacy of the City West Falcons continues to grow with the club claiming its sixth Victorian Netball League Championship title.Already the most successful club in the competition’s history, the Falcons have now won as many top grade premierships as the other teams combined. Throw in another three grand final appearances, they’ve made the final game of the season nine out of the 12 seasons. On Wednesday night, it was all about the Falcons. They started by winning the under-19 premiership comfortably, before stepping up for the championship grand final against the Geelong Cougars. After playing the best ever VNL game in the semi finals according to Falcons coach Marg Lind, it was another thriller in the grand final. The Falcons had to come from behind, to get the 49-47 Havingwin.been part of the competition since day one, Lind has seen a lot of things on the court. But after the two premierships, she was left speechless about what they had achieved. It exceeded all their expectations heading into the“Whatseason.anight,” she said. “I have no idea how we did that. “I thought they would either blow us out of the water or just a nail biter. Credit to Geelong they never gave up. “It feels amazing. We work hard.
