Tribute to ‘the king’ Hillside’s John St Peeters is bringing what might be the biggest-ever Australian Elvis show to Melbourne.

The sold out show will take place at Hammer Hall on August 14 and The Australian Book Of Records will be there to confirm the potentially record-setting attendance. The show will involved over 100 musicians performing to an audience of 2500.

“It’s just gonna be really incredible for me to be on that stage with over 100 other people; Mark Andrew as Elvis and me on stage conducting and playing the piano,” Mr St Peeters said. “I put a lot of work behind the show and there are a lot of surprises, it’s definitely a show that no one has ever seen.”

The vision stemmed from a connection Mr St Peeters had with “the king” himself in 1975, when he was given a personalised photo from Elvis that read “To my competition, heard you were good – Elvis”.

Elvis’ team asked to record and collaborate with Mr St Peeters following a show in Kuala Lumpur two years before Elvis’ death.

“This show will be my thank you to the king,” Mr St Peeters said.

Film coup for St Albans The first ever Australian-Slovenian co-production, which was shot mainly in St Albans, is among a swag of film premiering at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

MIFF is returning to cinemas in August for the festival’s 70th anniversary, after two years of staging virtual screenings.

Moja Vesna is the first feature for local director Sara Kern, who emigrated from Slovenia eight years ago.

The film’s title is not only the names of the two main characters, in Slovenian it has an

extra layer of meaning, and can be translated as My Spring.

It tells the story of a young girl, Moja, from an immigrant family, who has to play the role of cultural mediator after her mother dies.

Lead actor Loti Kovacic, 10, speaks English and Slovenian for the role.

“I was so happy when when we found Loti, she just was perfect … You can see that she’s processing things and she’s kind of captivating in this way,” Ms Kern said.

The film also features well-known local talent: Claudia Karvan’s agent read the script and suggested the in-demand actor to play the mother of Moja’s best friend.

It was mostly shot in St Albans by a Slovenian and Australian crew during the winter of 2021.

Ms Kern said while the film is not autobiographical, she drew on her own childhood to write the script.

“I kind of draw on the emotional landscape of it … there’s been a couple of deaths in my family and it just kind of affected me as a child,” she said.

For recent immigrants, the experience of grief can be extremely isolating, Ms Kern said, and the film explores how Moja is able to find solace with people outside her family.

The director has won international awards

for her short films and developed the feature script in Paris during 2018, as one of six filmmakers worldwide selected for the Cannes Cinefondation Residence.

But she did not want Loti Kovacic, who is not a professional actor, to have to memorise lines of script, so much of the film was developed through improvisation and later in the edit process.

The film is one of 11 features launched in MIFF 2022 that have been partially funded by the festival’s premiere funding program.

The festival will be a mix of city, suburban and regional screenings, with shows also streaming online.

Call for better council culture

By Elsie Lange Brimbank council has welcomed the Victorian Local Governance Association’s (VLGA) renewed call for action on negative council culture, addressed by the Victorian Local Government Culture Review Project.

The project is providing a platform for the local government sector to look into and take on board a positive and inclusive culture, to improve governance and public trust.

The VLGA is an independent governance organisation supporting councils and

councillors to strive for high local governance standards and wants to see tangible outcomes from the project.

VLGA chief executive Kathryn Arndt said it was “disheartening” to see the important work of councils, who are the closest arm of government to the people, be undermined by workplace behaviour.

“Beyond the legal obligations of councils to maintain safe workplaces, nurturing a culture of civil conduct inside and outside of the council chamber is central to good governance,” Ms Arndt said.

“There is a difference between the ‘cut and thrust’ of political debate and conduct which threatens the ability of councillors and council officers to do their jobs.

“We hope to see these complex dynamics addressed through the [project].”

Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said council, as a member of the VLGA, was supportive of actions being addressed through the culture review project to promote good governance.

“At Brimbank we are a diverse council, where professional development is regularly

undertaken to ensure good governance is practised,” Cr Nguyen said.

Outcomes the VLGA hope to see include a raised voter awareness about local governance, training for male and female candidates, diversity and inclusion support and support for chief executives to complete their work safely.

Further, VLGA call for a culture of training for councillors, conflict resolution skills building and increased external supports through expanded roles for monitors and governance organisations.

Inspiring hope across Brimbank Brimbank-based homelessness support organisation Inspire Hope would like a whole month dedicated to raising awareness around the intricacies of homelessness.

More than 116,000 Australians experience homelessness each night in Australia, according to the national peak body for homelessness, Homelessness Australia.

Homelessness Week (August 1-7) aims to bring awareness to this complex topic.

Inspire Hope founder Tamarra Carr said a homelessness awareness month would help to keep the issue in the spotlight.

“For the most part these people have the most heart-wrenching life stories, they show their vulnerabilities and ask for very little,“ she said.

“I’d love to see the community doing more to either advocate, bring about awareness or even just come in as support during homelessness week.”

Ms Carr said she would like to see the community advocating for more safe and affordable housing in Brimbank.

A Brimbank man who experiences homelessness spoke to Star Weekly, sharing

that he has struggled with family violence and alcoholism for much of his life, resulting in homelessness; he cannot be named for privacy reasons.

With Inspire Hope’s support, he said that for the first time in as long as he could remember, he had people to celebrate his birthday with.

When asked what he wanted to change in this sector, he said more awareness around alcohol abuse and to feel treated like a human being within his community.

More than 20,000 Australians have signed up to become blood and plasma donors since the ‘mad cow’ ban was lifted last month.

New figures released by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood show that 20,711 people booked in for their first blood donation since the rules changed, allowing anyone who lived or travelled in the United Kingdom for six months or more between 1980 and 1996, during the ‘mad cow disease’ outbreak, to finally donate.

In a statement, Lifeblood said there were 30,000 blood donors cancelling or rescheduling their appointments every week and were asking people to see the opportunity to donate as “a winter marathon, not a sprint”.

Lifeblood Australia executive director of donor services Cath Stone said one in six people who attended a centre had been impacted by the rule change.

“It has been truly incredible to see so many generous people ready to roll up their sleeves and start saving lives as soon as the change was announced,” Ms Stone said.

Lifeblood said it was continuing to look at other ways to ensure more Australians could donate blood and plasma, including its sexual activity rules which prevent gay and bisexual men and trans women from giving blood in Australia if they’ve had sexual intercourse with a man in the past three months.

“Right now, we are looking at our sexual activity rules and exploring whether we can safely reduce the wait period for plasma donations,” she said.

Brimbank council backs better bus plan for west travellers Brimbank council is calling on the state government to better support the western suburbs through public transport as there is currently a gap in accessibility to bus services in the region.

It comes as a recent Melbourne University briefing paper highlighted a proposal for a new bus network for Melbourne’s west, with initial modelling showing the number of people able to access buses could increase by fourfold or more.

Council recently met with researchers from the university, pledging its support for the proposal.

As reported by Star Weekly, Melbourne School of Design public transport network planning lecturer and the paper’s co-author

Iain Lawrie said the research had discovered “amazing“ improvements to accessibility to bus networks, especially considering that an average of 1.3 per cent of western region respondents in the 2016 Census indicated buses were their main mode of transportation to and from their workplace.

“Buses have an incredibly low mode share,” he said.

Using spatial modelling software, the Melbourne Centre for Cities paper has proposed a ’clean-slate’ bus network comprising of 25 new frequent route corridors.

“By adopting established public transport planning principles, the ‘clean-slate’ network achieves a staggering improvement in network accessibility at a viable capital and recurrent

cost,” the report read.

The review of services suggested a re-routing of bus services across the western suburbs to better connect the region.

Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said there was a need for bus service improvements in Brimbank.

“The research identified a gap between the bus services in this region and other parts of Melbourne and how inefficiencies were not providing good value for money for the state government,” she said.

“Advocating for access to reliable, regular public transport is one way council can help to improve social inequality and address climate emergency by promoting an environmentallyfriendly alternative to car travel.”

Council is supportive of improved bus services in Brimbank.

Owners urged to scoop up poop

By Olivia Condous Brimbank sports clubs are facing an unpleasant issue, due to residents neglecting to clean up dog droppings left on sporting fields.

North Sunshine Football Club president Rob Telfer said club volunteers were forced to spend extra time picking up dog droppings multiple times per week.

“Tuesday and Thursday nights, before training, there’s always dog excrement left on the ground, as well as Saturdays before the game,” Mr Telfer said.

“Everyone is time-poor pretty much, and

Mr Telfer said the time volunteers spent picking up after residents’ dogs amounted to an extra hour of work per week for each person.

He said residents who use the sporting

grounds to exercise their dogs should treat the space with more respect or keep their dogs on a lead to ensure they knew about any droppings.

“Treat it like it’s your front door, because you want to clean it up if it was there,” Mr Telfer said.

While the club hadn’t had any injuries caused by slips in dog droppings, it had experienced refusal to pick up after pets when asked.

“It’s an interesting one because you can ask them to do it, but you can’t make someone,” Mr Telfer said.

Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguygen said residents needed to be aware that not cleaning up after their pets could result in them receiving a $400 fine from council for littering.

“Remember, it’s an offence if you don’t clean up after your dog as it’s considered littering,” Cr Nguygen said.

“Brimbank provides a range of vibrant parks where dog owners can get exercise and enjoy outdoor activities with their pets.

“Responsible pet owners must always clean up after their dog to ensure all community members continue to enjoy these wonderful spaces.”

A tree-ific planting day Brimbank has become a little greener after 2000 plants were put in the ground as part of a community working bee.

The planting sessions was held by Friends of Kororoit Creek (FOKC) on Sunday, July 31 at The Bug Rug in Sunshine West to mark National Tree Day. FOKC president Jessica Gerger said there was a great turn out on the day.

“Around 150 people of all ages braved the cold, windy weather to help plant. We reckon there would have been even more if the weather had been kinder to us – but that is still an absolutely fantastic showing,” she said.

“Everyone was so keen to help and get involved. Whenever you turned around there were people lovingly working on different sections. It was heartwarming to see.”

The group planted a variety of plants with 100 trees in the mix.

“The rest were shrubs, wildflowers and grasses which are just as important,” Ms Gerger said.

“Indigenous grasses are fantastic for carbon sequestration and provide habitat and food for beneficial insects and other local fauna,” Ms Gerger said.

A 30 year charity drive

By Olivia Condous Terry Adair has always felt the need for speed, and while he’s not as young as he used to be, he’s getting back on the open road and driving across the country for a good cause.

The 77-year-old Brookfield resident is taking part in the historic Variety Vic Bash charity event this year, after driving the original legendary journey back in 1985, started by renowned entrepreneur Dick Smith.

“I read about Dick Smith organising this Variety Club bash, so I asked him if I could join in and he agreed,” Mr Adair said.

The Variety Club raises money for thousands of children who are sick, disadvantaged or have additional needs.

The 30th year of the event will involve a convoy of almost 100 cars, all at least 30 years old, driving about 5000 kilometres from Melbourne to Cairns via Birdsville.

Mr Adair has always had a passion for motoring, notably competing in the Australian Repco Reliability Trial in 1979.

He drove in the first three Variety Bash events back in the late 80s, but after going through the pandemic he’s ready to give it another go after a hiatus of more than 30 years.

“After a bit of idle time while we were in lockdown, I thought, why don’t I do another bash?”

Mr Adair met his new driving partner and friend Rudi Da Graaff during Friday happy hour at the retirement village where they both live.

“We had some same interests in aviation and cars and that’s how we got involved with each other,” Mr Da Graaff said.

The pair will be driving a 1992 Subaru Liberty dubbed Lifestyle Community Bash Boys, after their main sponsor Lifestyle Village.

“I haven’t been to Birdsville for 35 years, that’ll be something to look forward to and I used to live in Cairns so arriving back into my old hometown will be a lot of fun,” he said.

Support for schizophrenia A drug that will greatly improve the livelihoods of people living with schizophrenia will become more affordable and accessible after its was added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

SydenhampsychiatristDrSamirIbrahim saidthisadvancementwillallow hispatients and their caregivers to live a more fulfilling life that isn’t as defined by schizophrenia medication.

“The availability of a new treatment option on the PBS enables us to rethink how we manage this chronic disease,” Dr Ibrahim said.

He has worked with patients living with schizophrenia for 40 years and welcomes the benefits this drug will have on his patients in Brimbank and surrounds.

The drug, INVEGA HAFERA was added to the PBS on August 1 and is a six-monthly antipsychotic injection that treats adults with schizophrenia. Patients will require fewer treatments per year; it will allow those receiving the drug more freedom within their lives and the ability to spend less time receiving treatment.

“Long-acting injectable treatment offers an option for people living with schizophrenia, which enhances their compliance on medication, and hence lowers discontinuation and relapse rates, leading to a better quality of life for the patient and their families,” Dr Ibrahim said.

Brimbank residents with a disability will soon have access to a new outdoor program.

Out Doors Inc provides programs for individuals living with a disability, ensuring they have the opportunity to connect with others. The programs use the outdoors as its vehicle to drive connection between participants, hosting day and overnight trips involving a variety of activities.

Program co-ordinator Cristian Orellana is excited to be joining the Brimbank community.

“All the co-ordinators that work with us are trained in outdoor education in things like hiking, camping, paddling, climbing, mountain biking, all those activities that kids do in outdoor education we offer it for

participants,” he said.

Out Doors Inc has opened a hub in Brimbank in response to a gap in the area.

“We’ve taken on the recommendations from The Royal Commission into mental health in Victoria and we identified that our services aren’t accessible to the people in Brimbank, especially those that require it,” Mr Orellana said.

The new hub is open most Fridays and is designed for participants to be able to drop in, ask questions, talk about the programs or join the next intake for activities.

It’s at St Albans Community Centre, 33 Princess Street, St Albans.

Bill to provide more protection

By Holly McGuinness The federal government introduced legislation in Parliament last month that will ensure any working person escaping family and domestic violence will have access to 10 paid days of domestic violence leave.

Dale Wakefield, chief executive of women’s health centre and family violence support organisation GenWest, said 10 days of paid leave for victim survivors escaping family violence is a positive step towards supporting their safety and wellbeing.

“Victim survivors are more likely to be able to leave a violent relationship when they are financially secure. Poverty and financial hardship affects many victim survivors who are escaping family violence,“ he said.

“Leave that supports victim survivors to stay in paid employment can be a key factor in supporting them to live safe lives, free from violence.”

But he would also like to see further changes made across the sector to provide better protection to victims.

“Family violence is the single biggest cause

of homelessness in Victoria,” Mr Wakefield said.

“We also need the federal government to increase the amount of secure and affordable accommodation options to ensure that victim survivors have a safe place to call home.”

The legislation would mean an amendment to the National Employment Standards and be a mandatory inclusion for full-time, part-time and casual workers, with hopes it will be rolled out as early as February 2023, however small businesses will have an additional six months to arrange implementation.

National counselling support organisation Full Stop Australia has also welcomed the legislation.

Chief executive Hayley Foster said escaping from a domestic violence situation is a huge ordeal.

“It often involves health, housing and legal appointments, as well as court appearances, all of which are only available during business hours,“ she said.

“A survivor of domestic abuse shouldn’t have to choose between escaping violence and losing their job.”

Capturing memories Footscray-based creative producer Kathleen Reynolds is reaching out to older people throughout the west to come forward to tell the stories of their lives so far, as part of a new creative project.

Aiming to attract about 10 people over the age of 75, the project will capture a series of intimate interviews focusing on general themes, such as love and regrets.

Ms Reynolds said she wants to encourage younger people to not neglect or discredit older people and value their stories.

“We can listen and learn from older people,” she said.

“They have lived through all the challenges that we are living through.

“Everyone has the right to preserve their story.”

Ms Reynolds is hoping the project will highlight ongoing issues for the elderly community, such as financial abuse and physical abuse.

She said the project will allow her to bring the skills she has acquired working within the advertising industry to respectfully capture the stories.

“My love and passion has always skewed towards highlighting interesting stories,” Ms Reynolds said.

She said she is hoping to screen the project at a special screening for the west and then broaden the project beyond the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Mental health workforce boost A new partnership between Victoria University (VU) and Orygen, Australia’s centre of excellence in youth mental health is aimed at boosting youth mental health workforce capacity, and ultimately improving mental health outcomes in Melbourne’s north-west.

The partnership will build the region’s mental health workforce capacity through education and training opportunities for VU students, and focus on collaborative research efforts to address challenges in Australia’s youth mental health sector.

The partnership delivers on

recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s mental health system, which called for enhancing workforce capabilities and professional development and the translation of research into practice.

As part of the agreement, more than 50 work experience placements will be available for VU’s psychology, nursing, and social work students in the partnership’s first year, increasing to about 100 students per year during the five-year agreement.

From 2018 to 2021, almost 3000 students graduated from Victoria University and VU

Polytechnic in the areas of psychology, nursing, social and youth work, the university said.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker said the university was delighted to be collaborating with Orygen in this vital area.

“Together we will provide unique opportunities for VU students and staff in education, placements, and research, developing synergies that would not otherwise be possible,” Professor Shoemaker said.

“Most importantly, we will be serving the people of the north-west of Melbourne in a far deeper way. This isn’t just a partnership – it is a

deep alliance connected to our curriculum and the communities we serve.”

Almost two-in-five young people (39.6 per cent) aged 16–24 years experienced mental ill-health in the past 12 months, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data released on July 22.

This rate for young people has nearly doubled since 2007, and is now nearly twice the rate of the general population, making it more critical than ever to support and grow a diverse, multidisciplinary mental health and wellbeing workforce.

A story of fatherly love Altona resident and former premiership footballer Bachar Houli is hoping his new book can encourage parents to spend quality time with their children outdoors and away from social media.

His new children’s book ‘My Baba is the Best’ was released on Tuesday, August 2 across bookstores and online.

Told from the perspective of a young girl based on one of his two daughters, the book explores the love between a father and his daughter and the value of actively participating in life with them.

Houli said the book is aimed at children aged four to eight and is ideal for fathers to read to their daughters.

“I think it’s important to be able to do things with your kids outdoors,” he said.

“There’s so many cultures that make up our community.”

Houli said he collaborated with Indonesian illustrator Debby Rahmalia to tell the story.

“The pictures tell a thousand words,” he said.

Houli said the book will also be a special part of his relationship with his daughters and reflecting on the positive memories.

“I am reminded of he blessings we have,” he said.

“You just remember special moments.”

Mel goes the extra mile Social worker Mel Walters loves making a difference for clients every day.

Not only does the Ravenhall Bolton Clarke employee help avert family crisis, but she also helps people access secure housing, travels up to 300 kilometres a day to make visits and helps people navigate the aged care system.

Speaking ahead of Aged Care Employee Day on August 7, Mel said the satisfaction of helping people access services and get back on their feet is all in a day’s work.

“I often liaise with clients who have no family who can help them, so I assist them to gain the additional supports they need,” she said.

“I’ve been a social worker for over 40 years in a community setting and I love the variety, the privilege of hearing peoples’ stories and working with them to put in place preventative methods based on their preferences.

“Social workers are there to work with people – everyone is equal and entitled to respect and care.”

Mel’s duties include helping people make decisions about future care planning so their wishes are understood if their needs change.

“I also help make informed choices about their accommodation, elder abuse, family conflict, deal with risk management surrounding the clients’ safety at home and develop networks to find creative solutions to peoples’ issues identified at the time,” she said.

To keep clients safe and connected, Mel continued with phone consultations during COVID-19 restrictions.

“I also linked people into projects in the west like a telephone chat program,“ she said.

She said helping people with social issues, like adequate housing, supports their overall health and wellbeing.

“I had a gentleman who was living in a community housing complex which had

security risks for him, and he had undergone chemotherapy and treatment for cancer,” she said.

“He was completely alone in the world and we worked with him to relocate to a more secure form of shared accommodation which met his needs. Within three months he went into remission and his wellbeing was greatly improved.”

Mel has worked at Bolton Clarke for three years, supporting clients in the west.

“What do I love about the westies? The diversity,” she said.

“We have lots of cultural groups and immigrants and mostly clients haven’t been into contact with services before. You are really making a difference.”

Stay well this winter Brimbank Brimbank council is urging residents to stay well this winter and take action against COVID-19 by receiving a booster shot.

Cases across Brimbank and Victoria have been rising in recent months, and with older residents still at a high level of vulnerability, it’s just as important as ever to stay up-to-date with vaccinations.

Individuals over five years old are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination, with the number of doses varying per age group. Those aged 16-20 should have received three doses, 30-49 age group are eligible for four and those aged over 50 are encouraged to receive four doses of the vaccine.

To stay well this winter, Brimbank residents are not only encouraged to stay up-to-date with vaccinations but also wear a mask in public spaces and crowded areas, ensure they get tested upon showing COVID-19 symptoms and stay home if feeling unwell.

Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the Brimbank community is very good at looking after each other.

“The COVID-19 virus is still in our community and there are things we can do to help reduce the spread, through mask wearing when we’re in crowded spaces, to staying home when we are unwell,” she said. “Together we can help protect our loved ones, our businesses and our older residents. Talk to your doctor or pharmacy about how you can stay well this winter.”

Braybrook VCE students shine

By Matthew Sims Four Braybrook College students were among the 298 VCE students named as recipients of the Premier’s VCE Awards.

Presented on Wednesday, July 20, the awards ranged from awards for all-rounders to awards in specific subjects.

Braybrook College’s Jacqueline Gadea and Vasalem Pawpi Bingai Chho were recognised for their community services (VCE VET)

studies, while Sammi Seah was awarded for psychology and Bao Ngoc Tran for Vietnamese first language.

Braybrook College senior sub-school leader Tania Gadea said the students thanked the teachers for their efforts throughout the difficulty of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions during 2021.

“The class of 2021 epitomises all that Braybrook College is about, maximising academic ability through a strong work ethic

and tenacity, no matter the circumstances,” she said.

“Despite two years of lockdown, that arguably hit our demographic the hardest, our students persevered to produce some of the best results Braybrook College has ever seen.

Nearly a quarter of the class of 2021 earned an ATAR of 90+ with 12.5 per cent achieving study scores of 40 plus.”

Education Minister Natalie Hutchins presented the awards to the students and said

the awards were the product of a high level of collaboration.

“Massive congratulations to our top-performing 2021 VCE students who worked incredibly hard to achieve these amazing results,” she said.

“These award winners are testament to how well Victorian students, with support from their school communities, families and friends, adapted to the challenges of a global pandemic and still produced outstanding results.”

Excellence awards a top event

By Elle Cecil As a business based around events, exhibitions and large groups of people, Events 720 faced a struggle over the COVID-19 pandemic period.

However, the team has not only overcome the challenges but thrived in the face of disaster, eventually taking home the Adaptability Award and Business of the Year Award at the 2021 Melton Business Excellence Awards.

Owner and managing director, Leon Mortimer, started his business in 2015. After working in the industry for some time and noticing a gap in the market, Events 720 was born.

“I saw the opportunity to do some things differently and a bit better – that was my motivation to start,” Leon says.

Events 720 offers customised solutions to exhibitors, whether they be trade fair setups, pop-up parks or expansions in the hospitality industry. These services are provided by the business from start to finish: beginning with design and production, and ending with delivery and installation.

Leon estimates that due to the pandemic and Victoria’s lockdowns throughout 2020 and 2021, between 60 and 70 per cent of competitor businesses have now closed.

“Our biggest achievement is probably just getting through the last couple of years after our industry completely stopped in 2020,” Leon explains.

In a process that Leon describes as “straightforward and not too stressful,” nominations for the 2022 Melton Business Excellence Awards are now open.

“We’ve since gained a lot of exposure and recognition from the [Melton Business Excellence] Awards.”

The school reopened for 2021 on Thursday and there was plenty of fun for the two sets of twins and their school friends.

Colby and Sebastian, 8, and Rania and Dania, 6, are two of three sets of twins at the school this year. The school has about 65 students.

A third set of twins will start on February 11 and will be part of the school’s early years program.

Principal Lee Bullock said it was possibly the first time the school had welcomed three sets of twins.

There have been at least eight factory, waste management or tip fires across the west and Hume since October, while the Kealba landfill has had underground fires burning continuously for more than a year.

Former LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley and former state MLC member Colleen Hartland say enough is enough.

“It’s a long-running issue,” Mr Rowley said.

“It doesn’t matter which party has been in power at the time, they haven’t done enough clean-up of the west.

“The urgency to clean it [industry] up has never been greater.”

Mr Rowley said during his time with LeadWest, from 2010-18, one of the biggest concerns raised by local councils was the need for a cleaner, greener and more liveable western metropolitan area.

“We were constantly talking about it with the other tiers of government, about the investment needed in the west to make it cleaner and greener.

“It just seems that it is taking a long time to get there.”

Mr Rowley said an Environment Protection Act, which changes how the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulates pollution, waste and contamination in Victoria, had been

delayed for 12 months.

“We’ve been waiting for so long to have confidence to be able to breath fresh air.

Confidence that our creeks aren’t going to be polluted.”

He suggests forming a steering committee which would include the EPA, WorkSafe, MFB and council representatives to have a co-ordinated approach to industry clean-up.

“I don’t think questions are being asked on Spring Street as often as they should.”

He also proposed government funding to help bring old industrial estates up to the 21st century and the introduction of better air quality monitoring systems.

Ms Hartland is a member of the Facebook group Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, which was

set up after the West Footscray warehouse fire which spewed toxic fumes across the western suburbs for days in August 2018.

She said the group, a non-political alliance of community groups, organisations and individuals, wants action.

“There’s been a spate of these fires,” she said.

“There’s been three in the last 10 days.

“The EPA and the state government don’t seem to be taking it seriously.”

Ms Hartland said the group wanted more regulation on industrial sites, clear information about when the EPA is called in and when and for how long air quality equipment is set up.

She has also called for the act to be introduced.

Youth homelessness pandemic

By Matthew Sims A new report has shown that more than one in 30 Victorian people aged 15 to 19 experienced first-time homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahead of Homelessness Week [Monday, August 1 to Sunday, August 7], the Mission Australia report ’Without a home: First-time youth homelessness in the COVID-19 period’ highlighted that 3.9 per cent of Victorian respondents in Mission Australia’s 2021 Youth Survey aged 15 to 19 indicated they experienced homelessness for the first time as a result of the

impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mission Australia Victorian director Nada Nasser said the findings were “shocking“ and highlighted the impacts becoming homeless has on young people.

“Young people who were homeless for the first time during the pandemic said they faced enormous psychological distress, family conflict and discrimination.

“Being forced into homelessness at such a crucial age can mean missing out on important education and employment opportunities.“ Ms Nasser said a national plan to end homelessness and plans for universal risk

screenings were urgently needed.

“Early intervention is crucial and we urge governments and others to take action so young people are adequately supported and help them avoid homelessness, reach their full potential and thrive,“ she said.

Everybody’s Home spokesperson Kate Colvin said the compounding impact of spiking rents and stagnant wages was impacting living standards and putting people at risk of homelessness.

“When you combine surging rents with flat wages you put people in a financial vice,“ she said.

“The recent change of government represents an opportunity for a reset.

“Now is the time to get moving and give people on low and modest incomes genuine choice.“ According to the 2021 Census data, 44.1 per cent of renter households in Brimbank were experiencing rental stress, which was a 34.4 per cent increase on the 9.7 per cent of renter households experiencing rental stress in 2016.

Briefs Teenager charged over assault Police have charged a Maidstone teenager in relation to an assault outside a fast food restaurant in Keilor Park last month. On Tuesday, August 2 police charged the 17-year-old with intentionally causing injury and recklessly causing injury. The charges relate to an incident on July 9 in which police allege the teenager struck a 49-year-old Keilor Park man in the face.

Crime syndicate crackdown Police seized a number of prohibited items from properties in Hillside and Airport West last week as part of an ongoing investigation into organised crime syndicates. Multiple search warrants were executed across the north-western suburbs on Monday, August 1. A residential property in Hillside and a business address in Airport West were searched, where police seized what they believe to be explosives, a handgun, boxes of various calibres of ammunition, cocaine, steroids and $100,000 in cash. A 39-year-old Hillside man has been charged with firearms, explosives, weapons and drug offences.

Milestone for Werribee Mansion Werribee Mansion will soon mark a milestone and residents across Melbourne’s north-west have been asked to help celebrate.

An exhibition will be held in September to commemorate 145 years of Werribee Mansion and people can submit their own memories, photos and stories, discussing what the attraction means to them.

Customer service officer Jenny Hanson said the exhibition aims to celebrate the tourist landmark.

“The whole concept was to look at the mansion through other people’s eyes and get their perspective … it’s a beautiful setting.”

Ms Hanson said. “[The mansion is] used by everybody for all sorts of reasons, even just a family gathering.”

Ms Hanson said it was a “full circle moment” when visitors tell her they once visited the mansion as kids, but are now bringing their own children.

“It means a lot to a lot of people and I just

want to celebrate that,” she said. “[It’s] an acknowledgement to the public … it’s our collective heritage and I think we should be proud of it.”

The theme of the exhibition will be ‘the mansion through visitors eyes’, and residents can submit their stories until Friday, August 26.

“Then [we can] display those stories and those photos, like a community celebration of what it means to everybody,” Ms Hanson said.

A 16-year-old Braybrook boy has been charged with armed robbery and robbery following two alleged robberies in Melton last week. Police say the youth approached a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy at a bus stop near the Melton Railway Station at about 4.15pm on Monday, August 1. He demanded phones and cash before assaulting both victims. The 16-year-old was remanded to appear at the children’s court.

Former Melton mayor Mammarella avoids jail sentence A former four-time Melton mayor and Labor candidate has been sentenced following an investigation by the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) that resulted in him being charged with electoral fraud.

Justin Mammarella avoided jail after pleading guilty to conspiring to attempt to pervert the course of justice, perjury and possessing an imitation firearm without a permit, receiving a three-year community correction order including 375 hours of community work.

His father Robert Mammarella was

also sentenced to a three-year community correction order and fined $12,000 after also pleading guilty to conspiring to pervert the course of justice and perjury.

The charges relate to allegations of fraudulent practices within the electorate office of former Victorian upper house MP Khalil Eiden.

It is alleged taxpayer funded resources were used to assist Justin Mammarella’s 2018 preselection campaign for the Melton seat through branch stacking.

to IBAC regarding the use of stationery to cover up branch stacking practices within the Cairnlea electorate office.

The father-son duo were aided by two other Labor staffers to construct a false story to provide to the IBAC investigation, initially claiming that the resources they used were for a mail-out to raise autism awareness for service provider Autism Plus.

Justin Mammarella was preselected by the ALP to contest the safe seat of Melton in the 2018 state election, but stood aside a month before the election after citing family reasons. He was charged by IBAC in

December that year.

The sentencing comes after IBAC released another report in conjunction with the Victorian Ombudsman last month, detailing allegations of serious corrupt conduct of multiple Victorian public officers, including Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz.

Premier Daniel Andrews has committed to implement the 21 recommendations for reform made by IBAC, including the establishment of a Parliamentary Ethics Committee and a Parliamentary Integrity Commissioner.

Digging in for conscious farming A Keilor not-for-profit organisation is striving to create the next generation of sustainable farmers with a focus on stewarding lands and caring for community, as Holly McGuinness discovers.

A

griculture and farming is an essential part of Australia’s economy but Farmer Incubator examines the industry closely, holding it to a higher standard and supporting the next generation of farmers.

The not-for-profit organisation was started in 2015 by Paul Miragliotta and Per Staurup who couldn’t find a simple way into becoming eco-conscious farmers, according to general manager Tom Tanhchareun.

“They wanted to become regenerative small-scale farmers and there was just no pathway, so they started Farmer Incubator to fill that gap,” Tom says.

“There’s pathways if you want to be a broad acre, conventional farmer with hundreds of acres and try to drag food out of dusty land and degrade it in the process.

“But if you really want to care for land and have that intimate connection to country and community, the pathway to becoming a conscious farmer is much harder.”

A 2021 Grattan Institute report on carbon emission reduction strategies said that in 2019, Australia’s agriculture industry was responsible for 15 per cent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, emitting 76.5 million tonnes.

The report stated the majority of these emissions can be attributed to livestock farming, while 16.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions are a result of non-animal sources in the sector. Main contributors to this include fuel combustion, fertilisers and soil additives and emissions from crop residues.

Part of Farmer Incubator’s vision is to reduce these harsh environmental impacts the industry imposes. “[Farming] actually has the potential to be a carbon sink, so it should be the other way around and that’s because of the practices that we use,” Tom says.

“It’s not just carbon emissions, it’s also biodiversity and water management, agriculture takes up over two thirds of Australia’s landmass and what we do with that land will have a decisive impact on all aspects of Australia’s environment.”

There’s a diverse assortment of hurdles for the future of the industry according to Farmer Incubator. These include but are not limited to mindful farming on stolen land, resourcing ethical up and coming industry professionals and providing a more sustainable, fairer future of food systems.

It also wants to see an overall shift in the way the industry is practised, with more funding dedicated to converting agriculture and farming to become more regenerative and mindful.

“There’s no funding because the government in Australia thinks of agriculture as an industry,” Tom says.

“It’s there to make money by producing commodities to export and we think that agriculture is about stewarding lands and caring for community by providing people access to good quality food.

“When you think of agriculture that way, and you look for funding to make it that way to achieve those goals there’s very little out there.

“The issue for us is that we rely heavily on volunteer labour to sustain ourselves as an organisation but the kind of work we do really needs paid staff who can make a living off the time that they give.

“The reason that funding doesn’t exist is because the conversation about agriculture in this country is so far from where it needs to be.”

One portion of the incubator’s work is to connect budding farmers through its pop-up garlic programs that run across Victoria.

These programs involved about 25 people a year and include eight workshops on topics such as soil management and crop cultivation.

Jo McMillan is currently taking part in one of the programs at a farm in Keilor. Her youngest child is about to graduate VCE, so she’s looking to the next chapter in her life and is hoping to

sell her own produce at farmers markets.

“We’re hoping to move somewhere with a bit more land, I’d like to be able to do some garlic farming on that land and get involved in selling it at farmer’s markets and conduct that as an organic crop,” Jo says.

The garlic program takes participants from preparing the soil through to harvesting the garlic months later, with this year’s intake awaiting harvest season.

“In the preparation and planting phase, it was hard work, we had the five of us working on a row of at least 150 metres,” Jo says.

“We had to prepare the soil and we had

to plan and it doesn’t sound like much but honestly, we were planting thousands of bulbs and it was full day’s work, and we just all formed a really nice working bond so that part of it’s been really great.

“It’s been really great to meet people that have a similar interest of different ages, different occupations and different things that they want to do with the knowledge and skills that they are learning through the course.”

Willow Ross completed the same course last year and now runs an organic farm in Clarkefield that supplies to North Melbourne restaurant Manzé.

“We’re a farm for this one restaurant so we’re almost like a little market garden set up 40 minutes out of town,” Willow says.

Willow says Farmer Incubator’s program had a grassroots feel that was incredibly inclusive with a diverse community involved, and would recommend it to anyone wanting to get their hands dirty.

“Farmer Incubator totally put me on the path in this direction and I’m still pretty close with a whole bunch of the people there. I got this job [With Manzé] from the program I did last year,” Willow says.

BMW Z4 2009 - 2019 sportscar USED CAR CHECKOUT Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The BMW Z4 is a genuine sportscar not simply a convertible because it has a long bonnet and the occupants sit close to the rear wheels. The Z4 first reached us Downunder in 2004, but in this used car checkout we will begin with the introduction of the second generation from September 2009.

The 2009 model was tamed slightly to be easier to live with on a daily basis. Until then it was sold to drivers willing to accept a harsh ride and ultra-fast steering in return for brilliant handling, and unwilling to accept any compromises whist achieving this.

However, the gen-two Z4 has even better road grip as well as steering that all-but reads the driver’s mind. Point it at the right road, give it a bootfull and you will soon to smile with the joy the car produces.

Some nervousness still exists, particularly on irregular surfaces where it is bumpy, but it isn’t overdone.

The styling of the second-generation BMW Z4 is instantly recognisable, with the same long bonnet, short tail and ‘flame’ side surfaces.

This time around the Z4 used a folding hardtop which looks like a fixed-head coupe when the top is up.

BMW Z4s began with a 2.5 or 3.0-litre naturally-aspirated straight sixes until the company started to produce small-capacity turbo-petrol engines.

Some sixes remained alongside the turbo-petrol fours until 2012, when they were replaced by big-boost turbo fours.

A very special model is the Z4 35i. This was the last of the famed twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six units. It’s likely to become a classic and may increase significantly in value.

Manuals have six forward gears. Autos have six, seven or eight ratios.

The BMW dealer network is well established in Australia and is known for its high quality of technical training. This high-tech diagnoses and servicing are just one reason it makes a lot of sense to buy a used Z3 or Z4 that has always been serviced by an official BMW dealer.

Spare parts aren’t outrageously expensive for a car in this class, but may prove to be a factor in your decision as to whether to buy an older Z4 rather than a cheaper convertible from a lower-cost maker.

Insurance may be expensive if the driver is young and/or inexperienced. Surprisingly there is seldom a big increase in premiums for the high-performance models.

More kit a plus for Nissan X-Trail

By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Those who thought Nissan’s long-standing popular sports utility vehicle would trail away into oblivion were mistaken. The mid-size X-Trail came to Australia more than two decades ago with little fanfare but won the hearts and wallets of those searching for soft-road versatility.

Now, Nissan has announced a new fourth generation X-Trail for Down Under in the second half of 2022. In the meantime, to celebrate 20 years here, the Japanese company has refreshed the MY22 model range with the addition of a new ST+ variant.

Available in two- or four-wheel drive, the ST+ slots in between the T and ST-L grades and offers around-view monitor with moving object detection, front and rear parking sensors, and satellite navigation above the ST. On test was the two-wheel drive variant selling for $34,140, plus on road costs.

All-wheel drive adds $2000 to the price. There are seven-seat X-Trails but the ST+ makes do with five.

Styling Little is added over the styling of the 2017 updated X-Trail. The ST+ sports daytime running lights, body-coloured power folding / adjusting mirrors with integrated indicator and rear roof spoiler. Rolling on 17-inch alloy wheels, the ST+ could might well be any of the popular rivals in this range.

Interior Flexibility is the catchword in seating, with a second-row 40 / 20 / 40 split fold, sliding / reclining bench and creative cargo area.

Infotainment Apart from the addition of satellite navigation, carried over are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, digital radio, Bluetooth and NissanConnect with voice recognition and control.

Things get under way with intelligent key and push-button engine start and stop.

Engines / transmissions The Nissan X-Trail comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in manual ST grades, and with an up-specced 2.5-litre unit in other variants. The 2-litre develops 106 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque; the 2.5-litre motor 126 kW and 233 Nm. All the latter, in two or four-wheel drive, are mated with Nissan’s Xtronic constantly variable transmission with manual mode.

Safety The new X-Trail ST+ is sold on the addition of an all-round-view monitor with moving object detection, plus front and rear parking sensors.

Carried over from the ST are six airbags cruise control, anti-skid braking, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, forward autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, vehicle dynamic control and hill start assist.

Unlike with some rivals, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert are absent until a shift up range. And there’s no adaptive cruise control.

Driving The 2.5-litre engine is offered across the range and performs efficiently without stressing the CVT (or driver).

Ride and handling are mid spectrum for this kind of car. There’s no ignoring body roll on some tight turns. Wind and road noise are par for this class of car.

Nissan claims the two-wheel drive ST consumes 7.9 litres of 91 RON regular unleaded petrol per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle. The ST+ on test clocked 11.1 litres per 100 in the city and 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres on a motorway run, which is roughly in line with the maker’s combined claim. The X-Trail carries a 60-litre tank.

The boot is impressive, with room for 565 litres with the second-row seat-backs up. Fold these and the volume expands to 945 litres. A variable height floor creates a compartment with dual capacity. A space saver spare is situated under the floor.

The cabin is far-from cramped, even with tall occupants in both rows. Headroom is made to match. Rear air vents are a boon on hot summer days and map pockets can be found in front seat backs, while the centre arm rest folds down to expose cup holders.

While instruments and controls are where they are to be expected, they do hark back to earlier days, especially with the X-Trail’s 7-inch touchscreen. The archaic foot-operated parking brake has seen better days and the lack of auto air-con and windscreen wipers also stands out.

Summary The X-Trail comes up against the likes of the well-respected Toyota RAV4 and the Mitsubishi Outlander and is only months away from being made redundant by the next generation Nissan. On the other hand, there could be some attractive deals in the offing on soon-to-become superseded models.

Thunder aiming to finish on a high Keilor Thunder is hoping to finish its debut National Basketball League 1 South women’s season on a high.

The Thunder have gotten better as the season has gone along and entered the second last round of the season, which was after deadline, in 11th place.

Thunder coach Tom Bandilovski said they were happy with where they were set to finish the season.

“We feel good,” he said. “We turned our season around, we didn’t start that good.

“We’ve been really competitive and played better, hopefully now we can finish the season well.

“We will finish the season sitting in mid-table, which is good for our first season in the NBL1 competition.

“We want to finish the last three games strong and we’re looking forward to it.”

Bandilovski said the group took some time

to adjust to playing at this level, with many of the group having not played in the NBL1 competition before.

He said the group had started to play as a team and it had made a big difference.

“We’ve been really competitive against every team in the competition, it’s a good result for us,” he said. “Only two or three players had played at this level, the others have come up from [Big V] state champ women.

“We’ve continued to develop and we’re very happy with that. The proof is there that we can play at this level.”

Bandilovski said while no contracts have been signed for next season, there was plenty of good signs for the group if they were to stick together.

With the core of the group still in the early parts of the careers, there is plenty of potential to grow.

“Hopefully these girls sign for the future

with the club,” he said. “If we can keep most of them next year, they’ll have one year under their belt together at this level.”

The Thunder was set to face the Geelong Supercats on Saturday, after deadline.

Bandilovski said they were hoping to have a better performance against them, than they did earlier in the season when they lost.

“It’s a good opportunity and we’re looking forward to playing them,“ he said.

“We’re playing them in front of our home crowd and we’re better at home.

In the final round of the season, the Thunder will play Casey Cavaliers and the Knox Raiders.

The Thunder men’s side was in 15th spot with six wins heading into the final two rounds.

Brasher hunts for runs

FV structures a bit clearer

By Tara Murray Footscray’s Dylan Brasher headed back to Darwin for a second straight off-season in the hunt of runs.

After a Victorian Premier Cricket season that didn’t live up to his expectations, Brasher was keen to get out and hit some more balls.

“I came up here last year and played in the Strike league,” he said. “My teammate Jake Reed was coming up to coach the Darwin Cricket Club.

“He said ‘did I want to come and play’ and I said ‘no worries’. It’ll be good to have a season before heading back home.”

Brasher said he did consider heading over to England to play cricket this off-season, but decided that with COVID-19, remaining in Australia was a better idea.

The move has paid off with Brasher starring with the bat.

Brasher is playing in the Premier grade competition with Darwin, while playing with the City Cyclones in the Strike League.

He has made four 100s and is averaging 46.87 across both formats with a top score of 195.

Brasher said it was nice to get out there and make a few runs.

“It’s amazing up here,” he said. “It’s warm up here and the people you meet along the way are good too.

“One of the things I wanted to do after not having the best year back home with Footscray was to play some consistent cricket and make making runs a habit.

“The training is hard as well. It’s nice to score some runs.”

Brasher said while the standard of cricket wasn’t as high as back home, there were plenty of players in similar situations to him.

There’s a number of players with state contracts, while others like Brasher are pushing for that next level.

One thing that has been good for Brasher has been the ability to play red ball cricket again. The last two premier cricket seasons have been one-dayers only.

“It was weird seeing a red ball again,” he said.

As well as making runs Brasher has taken on some leadership roles, including captaincy.

He said that was something he wanted to bring back to Footscray.

The Taylors Lakes junior also has another focus this season.

“The competition isn’t as strong as back home, but it’s the only cricket at this time of year,” he said.

“That was one of the main reasons I came up here. Anyone watching is a good thing.

“I want to play for the Victorian 2nd XI this year. I was hoping to play some last year, but it didn’t happen.

“Hopefully I can have a crack at it and who knows from there. Things can happen quickly.”

Brasher won’t have long to rest between

seasons. He said if they weren’t to make the grand final in Darwin, he would only be home for a couple of weeks.

If he keeps making runs, it’s not a bad thing.

The future of some clubs in the National Premier League and FV state league competitions is a bit clearer.

Football Victoria issued a release last week clarifying the promotion and relegation structure.

While the structure was stipulated in the competition rules at the start of the season, several clubs had told Star Weekly they had heard conflicting reports about what might happen.

In the NPL competition, the bottom two teams may be relegated to NPL2 for 2023.

The top two teams from the NPL2 competition may be promoted to the NPL competition, provided those clubs meet the requirements outlined in the NPL license agreement.

The bottom two teams of the NPL2 competition will face a play-off to stay in that division.

The bottom side will face the third ranked team in the NPL3 competition and the second bottom team will face the fourth team from NPL3, with the winners likely to be in NPL2 next season.

Currently Werribee City sits second bottom in NPL2, while Western United is sitting fourth in NPL3.

The top two teams from NPL3 are likely to be promoted as long as they meet the necessary requirements.

The bottom two teams of NPL3 may be relegated to the state league 1 competitions.

The top two teams of the two state league 1 competitions may be promoted to the NPL3 competition. In state league 1 north-west Caroline Springs George Cross sits top.

In state league 2 and state league 3, the top two sides in each competition may be promoted, while the bottom side in each competition may be relegated.

While teams may be promoted from state league 4, there is set to be no relegation. This means Spring Hills won’t be relegated.

Vacancies in state league 5 will be filled by new team entries.

In the women’s competition, no teams are set to be relegated in the NPLW competition.

The top four teams of the Victorian Premier League Women’s competition may be promoted in the NPLW competition.

The top three from the two state league 1 competitions could be promoted in the VPL. Spring Hills currently sits third.

The Saints march into the grand final on a high Last year St Albans was struggling to find the numbers to fill two senior football teams in the Western Region Football League.

Fast forward to last week, the Saints thirds side was playing off in the Riddell District Football League Club 18s grand final against Eynesbury, after deadline.

Speaking before the grand final, Saints coach Damien Downing said it was massive for the club to have a senior team in finals, with not much success in recent years.

“It’s good for the club,” he said. “It’s been 26 years since we last had a thirds side in A3 back then.

“We’ve been able to get some guys back to the club. It’s successful for us to get into the grand final.

“Our reserves won a grand final in 2015, so it’s been a little while since we’ve had some success at senior level.”

With many clubs struggling for numbers this season due to COVID-19 to field an extra side is a massive win for the club.

Downing, who coached the reserves last season, said the thirds team came about after the new reserves coach brought in some new players and they had too many for two open age sides.

After starting with 18 players in round one

there are now 32 players in the squad.

“We’ve had plenty of players come along during the season,” he said. “We’ve lost a few along the way as well.

“We have an unlimited bench so everyone can be part of it and I don’t have to cut anyone.

It can be hard on game day with so many players though.”

With no compulsory training, the side has a mixture of players pulling on the boots each week.

There’s the guys who want to just play football and don’t have to train and there’s a number of younger players.

Downing said the side had given an options to more player to try and keep players in the game.

“You tend to lose under-18 kids who don’t want to come up and play reserves football just yet,” he said. “This gives them the chance to still play football and might keep them in the game for longer.

Downing said before the match that they were hoping to get a big crowd at the grand final at Kings Park.

He said that it was not only big for the club but the community as a whole.

Lions stick to the plan

By Tara Murray Taylors Lakes coach Steve Burns couldn’t have asked for much more since taking over at the Essendon District Football League division 2 club.

While the Lions are yet to win a match since he came in mid-season, Burns has been nothing but impressed with the playing group.

Burns was heading into his fifth match in charge on Saturday, after replacing Charles Cuzzupi, who stood down from the role. Burns has already been appointed coach for the next two seasons.

“It has been a real eye opener,” he said.

“We’ve been playing a lot of kids with eight to 10 of our best 22 out.

“We’ve been really happy with the contest.

We’ve been in every game except for the last quarter against Keilor Park.

“Their efforts have been fantastic.”

Burns said when he was appointed that wins weren’t the most important thing with finals already out of the equation.

For him it had been about seeing as many players in action as possible, while getting used to the way they do things.

“We wanted to see the kids, but our hand was forced anyway,” he said. “We had a 15-year-old Rhys Bauer play his second game on the weekend.

“It’s something we’re doing and we’re okay with that. We’re hoping to play another under-18 kid this week.

“They’re learning the structures and how we want them to train. There’s a lot of potential, we just need to get the right people around them.”

Burns said the opportunity to work with the group in the back half of this season, had given the coaching staff a head start for the 2023 season.

He said they had already got to know the players not only on the field, but as young men, while getting to see them play live.

He said they were about six weeks ahead of where they would have been had they been appointed later in the piece.

While wins aren’t important, Burns said it would be nice to see the group get some reward for effort.

“We should have won on the weekend, but we lost on the siren,” he said. “I feel for the boys, they deserved to win as they are working hard for it.

“Coburg Districts and Burnside Heights will be tough to beat in the last two. We’re not really interested in results but about the processes and the processes have been good can not knock them.”

Burns said despite wins being few and far between in recent years, the vibe and the bond at the club remained really strong.

The Lions were set to Coburg Districts on Saturday, after deadline.

In other matches, Burnside Heights was hoping to seal its finals spot with a win against Hadfield , while Northern Saints was to host Keilor Park.

In premier division, Keilor was to host Glenroy, while in division 1, Hillside was to play West Coburg.

Westgate is taking it one week at a time in the battle for the championship and promotion spots in the FV state league 2 north-west.

Westgate is one of four teams fighting for the top two spots with two rounds remaining.

With Upfield, which would have had the chance to claim the title at the weekend, being stripped of six points for playing an ineligible player, things have become even more interesting.

Heading into the weekend’s catch up round, Mill Park was on top of the ladder, ahead of Altona East Phoenix on goal difference Fourth-placed Upfield and third-placed Westgate were set to play after deadline, with a victory for either side to move them to the top of the table.

Westgate coach Jim Gacovski said they would just continue to focus on what they had been doing.

“It’s coming down to the wire,” he said.

“Upfield losing points came as a shock to me, but that is football and we have to continue playing.

“It doesn’t change our focus. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. We’ll go week by week and go from there.”

After a slow start to the season which included a change of coaches, Westgate has hit form in the back half of the season.

Round six was the last time the side failed to come away with at least a point.

Gacovski said things were starting to come together.

“The boys are in good form and enjoying their football and scoring goals,” he said. “We’ve had key players come back for us. Most of the boys are coming back at the right time.

“For us we want to focus on doing what we have been doing the last couple of weeks.”

Promotion and a championship would be two years in the making, with Westgate on top of the table last year when the season was called off due to COVID-19.

Gacovski said they weren’t thinking about that.

“The last couple of weeks we’ve been building and we’ll give it a crack,” he said.

“We’re not trying to put a limit on it.”

Speaking before the game with Upfield, Gacovski said it would possibly be their biggest game of the season.

In the final two rounds they also face Altona East Phoenix.

United through to final 16 in the Australia Cup Western United is through to the final 16 of the Australian Cup for the first time after stunning defending champions Melbourne Victory on Wednesday night.

In their first official game since winning the 2021-22 A-League men’s title, United did enough to come away with a 2-1 win at AMMI Park.

Having never won a match in the FFA Cup-Australia Cup, United was keen to open their account in the knockout competition.

Many of United’s championship stars were on the pitch for the club’s first proper match of the pre-season.

Rhys Bozinovski was given his starting debut, with the 18-year-old playing in the midfield, while academy players Jordan Lauton and Noah Holmes were both part of the match day squad.

United opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Victory defender George Timotheou diverted a cross into his own net,

for an own goal.

Jake Brimmer levelled the score just after half time.

Lachie Wales proved to be the match winner for United, getting on the end of a Ben Garuccio cross from close range in the 53rd minute.

Neither side was able to convert chances later in the game.

Josh Risdon, who was captain for the night, said it was good to get a game under their belts.

“It was tough, I’m not going to lie,” he said on the Channel 10 broadcast after the game.

“It’s the first 90 minutes we’ve played this pre-season. We’ve been working hard but nothing can get you prepared for an actual game.

“Victory are a good side and always fit and strong, we knew that he would take it right to the end.

“It was a good win.”

Risdon said they knew heading into the game that they were likely to be a bit rusty being their first hit out.

He said that point was reinforced at half time.

“It’s our first hit out,” he said. “A few balls are going to miss here and there.

“We stuck to structures and did what we know we can do to get us there in the end.”

United will be back on the pitch pretty quickly with the round of 16 matches scheduled for August 10.

United has been drawn to play National Premier League side Sydney United in Sydney.

Melbourne’s west is well represented in the round of 16.

Green Gully had won through the previous week. The Cavaliers will back themselves to make it through to the final eight, having drawn fellow NPL side Peninsula Power on the road.

Blues through to final

By Tara Murray The pressure level was raised and Keilor was able to respond to win through to the Essendon District Football League women’s premier division grand final.

The minor premiers and premiership favourites were pushed all the way by Oak Park at Windy Hill in their semi final on Saturday.

The Blues were able to do enough to come away with the 5.4 (34)-3.10 (28) win and the week off ahead of the grand final on August 20.

Blues coach Brooke Surgeon said it was the type of game of football you expect at this time of the year.

“It’s really good and everyone is super excited,” she said.

“Oak Park played really well and this type of game was really good for the girls. To get that pressure in a semi final, we know what a grand final will be like.”

Surgeon said both sides brought the pressure as they made the most of the open spaces at Windy Hill.

She said while the Kangaroos had plenty of opportunities to score, her side made it tough.

“A lot of the shots were under pressure,” she said.

“They had some unfortunate misses, but other shots, our pressure to stop them scoring was really good.”

Surgeon said throughout there was the thought in the back of the mind that the Kangaroos could get in front and take control, but said she didn’t look at it as a bad thing.

“You see how they respond to that and this group is really coachable win or loss,” she said.

Megan Neill kicked two goals for the Blues.

Surgeon said Neill was one of their best, playing well in the ruck and then unstoppable when she rested down forward.

It was Lauren Caruso that Surgeon said was best on ground. Surgeon said their experienced players were able to stand up and settle nerves all over the ground.

“Through the mid, she was the powerhouse in the last quarter,” she said of Caruso. “Jessie Cameron in her 100th game was really good down back as well.”

Since forming a women’s side in 2017, the Blues have made a grand final every year across multiple competitions.

Last year they were on top when the season was called off due to COVID-19, and were later awarded the premiership, their second.

Surgeon said it was a credit to the core group of players and club overall to ensure the group was well supported and stuck together.

The Blues will play either Oak Park or Westmeadows in the grand final.

Surgeon said they would continue to work on things the next couple of weeks in preparation.

“We’ll go through some vision and pick up on the thing we didn’t do well.

“There will be a lot of pressure style training from here on in.”

Meanwhile in the men’s premier division, Keilor had a day out against Glenroy, winning 31.18 (204)-5.4 (34).

Matthew Clark kicked 13 goals in a best on ground performance.

The win sealed the Blues finals spot with two rounds remaining. The Blues sit in second.

Former Collingwood and Carlton player Heath Scotland has been appointed Deer Park’s coach for next year’s Western Region Football League division 1 season.

On Thursday night, the Lions announced they had appointed Scotland to the role.

“The Deer Park Football Club is thrilled to announce the appointment of Heath Scotland as its senior coach for the 2023 season,” the club said on social media.

“Heath replaces Mark McGoldrick as senior coach. Mark had agreed to coach the club through an extremely challenging transitional period following the loss of half the playing list from the 2019 premiership year.

“He has done an amazing job, transforming the list, ensuring the club remained more than competitive and establishing a terrific platform for the future.

“The club looks forward to the remainder of the 2022 season with Mark at the helm and is excited to welcome Heath on board for 2023.”

Scotland was coaching Sunshine, before stepping down earlier this season.

He had also guided Darley to a premiership in Ballarat Football League previously while also coaching at North Melbourne, Northern Bullants and Port Melbourne.

Before coaching, he played 268 AFL games (53 for Collingwood and 215 for Carlton) between 1999 and 2014.

He appeared in two grand finals for Collingwood, was an All Australian for Carlton in 2011, won their Best and Fairest in 2012.

Deer Park was sitting in fourth spot heading into the weekend’s matches, which were after deadline.
