Aiming for better justice Western Melbourne community legal centre WEstjustice has welcomed a $300,000 state government allocation towards a pilot project to divert children and young people away from the criminal justice system.

Co-ordinated with Victoria Police, Victoria Legal Aid, Youth Support and Advocacy Services and other youth services, the pilot project would involve conducting early and consistent referrals from police to youth services, greater use of caution and diversions,

training support for operational police and preventative education.

WEstjustice criminal law and youth law clinics program manager Angus Woodward said the Youth Crime Prevention and Early Intervention Project [YCPEIP] was an “ambitious” pilot project.

“It represents a unique and unprecedented level of collaboration between Victoria Police, the legal sector, courts, youth justice and local youth work service providers,” he said.

“The program seeks to reduce crime in the west by diverting eligible children and young

people away from the criminal justice system and referring them to appropriate support services to address the underlying factors that might be contributing to their offending behaviour.

“Evidence shows the later a young person enters the criminal justice system, the less likely they are to stay in it.”

Police and Crime Prevention Minister Anthony Carbines visited the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine recently to announce $300,000 in state government funding towards the pilot project.

Mr Woodward said the funding would contribute towards the success of the pilot project and make for a more cost-effective and efficient method of crime reduction.

“This funding recognises the mountain of work that has gone into developing and implementing this program and will hopefully help us to evidence what we believe works: getting in as early as possible with young people at risk of entering the criminal justice system, providing wrap around holistic support to them and their families and focusing on rehabilitation,” he said.

Arrests over drug investigation Four people from Brimbank have been arrested after police issued a series of warrants across Melbourne’s north-west as part of a drug investigation linked to the Nomads outlaw motorcycle gang.

Victoria Police, with the assistance of the VIPER Taskforce, searched two residential properties in Albanvale and one in Sunshine about 5am on Wednesday, July 13.

It is alleged that police found a clandestine laboratory at one of the Albanvale properties.

Police will allege it was used for the manufacture of steroids, prescription drugs and MDMA.

Police said two pill presses, a significant quantity of drugs including what appears to be approximately one kilogram of MDMA, approximately 20kg of prescription drug tablets and approximately 2000 vials of testosterone were also subsequently seized.

Police believe the quantities seized will have a street value in excess of several million dollars.

A 39-year-old Albanvale woman has been charged with trafficking large commercial quantities of MDMA and prescription drugs.

She was remanded to face Melbourne

Magistrates Court on November 11.

A 49-year-old Albanvale man and a 40-year-old Sunshine woman were charged with possessing drug of dependence.

Both were bailed to appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court on November 2.

A 26-year-old Albanvale woman was released and is expected to be charged on summons, police said.

Police said the investigation began after consignments containing prohibited goods were detected in New South Wales by Australian Border Force officers.

A story of resilience on school stage Caroline Springs students are gearing up to perform in an exciting musical production that centres on bravery, resilience and overcoming adversity.

Southern Cross Grammar will present ‘Matilda the Musical’, a show filled with song, dance and joy based on the classic Roald Dahl book.

The story follows the main character of Matilda, a young genius who navigates the troubles of painful family ties and a tyrannical school principal, spreading kindness as she goes.

Toly Sawenko, who is the director of the school production, said the students had been working hard to rehearse and prepare for the show over the last six months.

“I’m truly grateful and in awe of these young people who have taken the wings given to them and soared so high,” Mr Sawenko said.

Yaer five student Dhanvi was cast in the title role and said she was excited to perform in the school’s new Centauri Centre auditorium.

“Playing Matilda fills me with confidence, especially when I think about her and her intelligence,” Dhanvi said.

The cast also includes Kristine as Miss Honey, Prapti as Mrs Phelps, Aarushh as Michael Wormwood, Helana as Mrs Wormwood, Thomas as Mr Wormwood, and Angelica as the villainous Miss Agatha Trunchbull.

The school musical’s producer Maddison Attard said students had also worked hard to make costumes, build props and design sets.

“The cast, creative teams, and staff’s passion and ambition to make ‘Matilda the Musical’ a success has been a massive highlight,” Ms Attard said.

The production will run for four shows at the Centauri Centre from August 4-6.

VIPER is an acronym for visibility, intelligence, prevention, enforcement and reassurance.

Residents asked to share hoon reports Brimbank residents who hold concerns about hooning behaviour are invited to attend a Hooning Community Reference Group.

Established by the state government, the group aims to identify new ideas to help reduce hooning behaviour.

The session will allow community members from a range of other municipalities, including Melton and Maribyrnong, to discuss their worries with experts in road safety.

The panel of government, enforcement and research bodies hopes to develop short, medium and long-term solutions to address reckless driving in local communities and help to improve safety.

A Department of Transport spokesperson said Victoria has some of the toughest anti-hoon legislation in the country.

“Reckless driving can have devastating consequences for communities,“ the spokesperson said.

“Victoria is looking for ways to further reduce hoon behaviour to improve safety for everyone on our roads.

“As part of the panel’s work, we’re looking forward to hearing directly from local communities to better understand their concerns and identify possible ways to improve road safety.”

Community meetings will be held in four locations across Melbourne, and people are able to attend both in person or online.

Those living in the western region can attend the session at Brimbank council’s Sunshine offices on Wednesday, July 20 from 6pm to 8pm.

Stories from respiratory patients welcome The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network [NWMPHN] is calling for residents in the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne who have used a GP respiratory clinic [GPRC] to talk about their experiences using the new clinics.

GPRCs are open in a number of locations across the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne, including Altona North, Broadmeadows, Derrimut, Hoppers Crossing, Laverton, Melton, Sunbury, Sunshine, Werribee and West Footscray.

NWMPHN chief executive Christopher Carter said GPRCs are a new addition to the region’s health care system.

“They play a really important role, enabling residents with respiratory symptoms to get

tested and treated without having to go to a hospital emergency department, even when they can’t get in to see their local doctor,“ he said. “New services demand new insights and new experiences.

“This is why we’re keen to hear from people who have visited a GPRC, to find out what it was like for them.

“We’d love to know how the visit went, and we invite anyone with an opinion or a story to tell to let us know by emailing comms@ nwmphn.org.au.”

Across the metropolitan area, more than 35,000 people have been to GPRCs since they started to open in December last year.

Mr Carter said while it is important to seek quantitative data, it is always essential to learn

about the stories behind this data.

“When we are funding and facilitating health services, it is vitally important to always remember that these services are used by actual people,” he said.

“Numbers and other kinds of data can tell us about the quantity of people using a particular services, but only the voices of the patients themselves can tell us about the quality - and quality is key.”

Residents who oppose the prospect of new transmission lines across the western suburbs made their voices heard at a protest rally last week.

The Moorabool and Central Highlands Power Alliance held a convoy rally to Ballarat on July 15 as part of its Stop AusNet’s Towers campaign.

The rally is in protest of the Western Renewables Link, previously known as the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project, which proposes to construct a 190-kilometre overhead high-voltage transmission line between Sydenham and Bulgana.

The contractor for the project is AusNet Services and construction is currently due to commence in mid-2024.

Protestors travelled from Ballarat airport to the centre of the town, riding in cars, trucks, tractors and even horses.

Moorabool and Central Highlands Power Alliance chair Emma Muir said the aim of the rally was to bring the community together to talk about the issues they were facing.

“We’re trying to raise awareness of the impacts,” Ms Muir said.

Actor Stephen Curry, who has been an advocate against the towers, led the rally.

Ms Muir said she hoped the rally would attract enough attention so that more people would start speaking up and asking questions.

“I hope that for the people who aren’t aware about it, it might trigger a question for them and encourage them to understand what’s going on,” she said. “Hopefully they will start asking questions of their politicians, being an election year we definitely want to hold our politicians accountable for these projects.”

Advocates who are against the towers are fighting for the transmission lines to be underground, not to scrap the project completely.

“We’re pro-renewable, we understand what’s happening in the world,” Ms Muir said.

The organisation also recently reached a tally of 5000 individually addressed and signed complaint letters from community members.

New eBay data reveals a 365 per cent growth in collectible trading card games from January to March in 2022 and a 300 per cent increase in Pokémon cards.

Nate Tran started his business iCollect at 17 years old out of his parents Sunshine home.

Now in his early thirties and a dentist running two practices, the card trade has become a part of the family. Mr Tran’s business has sold just shy of half a million items across the globe and has sent a quarter of a million parcels containing collectors cards.

The business was started 15 years ago after his mum pulled out an old folder of Mr Tran’s Pokémon cards that became a welcome distraction from VCE exams, taking him back to a simpler time.

“I remembered back in the days when the most important thing in my life was not just studying, but it was the carefree nature of how children are, and I think that emotion was really needed during that time,” Mr Tran said.

The business grew from there when he realised there’s a huge demand for these cards.

Rail loop rethink urged by group

By Olivia Condous An independent transport organisation has called for the Victorian government to rethink priority rail projects in favour of a new railway connecting the western suburbs with the rest of Melbourne.

The Rail Futures Institute (RFI) said the government’s Suburban Rail Loop project was not the best option for investment and proposed a new option that would have “substantially wider benefits”.

The organisation put forward the Melbourne East-West Rail, which would combine with the current Melbourne Metro project and draws upon the government’s Western Rail Plan, which was first announced in 2018 but has not

progressed since.

RFI said Melbourne East-West Rail will have twin 14-kilometre tunnels which cross Melbourne’s CBD from Newport and Sunshine to Fitzroy, with new underground stations at Spotswood, Fishermans Bend and Fitzroy and new underground platforms at Southern Cross, Flagstaff and Parkville.

The outer western suburbs would also benefit from five new train stations between Deer Park, Wyndham Vale and Werribee, in order to meet the needs of growing residential developments.

“East-West Rail aims to redress the disparity in public transport supply between Melbourne’s burgeoning outer west and its eastern and southern suburbs,“ RFI said.

“Outer west residents face the challenges of

limited local employment, inadequate health and educational facilities and the inevitability of lengthy, unreliable commutes on heavily congested roads.

“East-West Rail will overcome these poor public transport connections by providing a new, high capacity east- west cross-city rail corridor, giving long overdue metropolitan style train services to Melton and the WerribeeWyndham Vale area.“ A government spokesperson said it was currently delivering the biggest ever pipeline of infrastructure projects, with upgrades to roads and rails in Melbourne’s west.

“The government’s current solutions provide the benefits that this plan purports to achieve and it is happening right now.”

An independent transport organisation is pushing for a new rail project to benefit the west.

Brimbank council is calling for community feedback on the recently released concept plan to upgrade Suffolk Road between Compton Parade and Holehouse Street, in Sunshine North.

The plan includes greening up the street by adding multiple new trees and garden beds, the addition of street furniture for outdoor dining and removing the bike lane to widen the footpath. The road itself will become a shared lane for vehicles and bicycles.

The plans are currently available to view on the council’s website and were put together from community consultation back in December last year.

The December consultation found the community wanted more greenery and shade, improved footpath condition, a less car dominated area, additional pedestrian amenities and better bicycle safety.

Feedback closes on Thursday, August 4.

Celebrating Brimbank’s First Nations A film telling the story of Indigenous Brimbank residents premiered at the Bowery Theatre in St Albans earlier this month.

Blak Voices of Brimbank producer Lisa Maza said the film amplified the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

She said the film premiere was held on

Saturday, July 9 as part of Be Bold Blakout to mark NAIDOC Week.

“The whole day is really just about obviously honouring black fellas, the Torres Strait Islander and the Aboriginal community, especially the local community here in Brimbank,” Maza said.

“When you do things locally, we get to see

those different voices. You know, instead of this kind of general, Aboriginal people, there’s lots of different Aboriginal people and they all have their own different stories.”

The film will be available to watch through Creative Brimbank until Sunday, July 24.

Value in venturing out Western suburbs children’s author Trent Roberts hopes his children and children across the world can learn about when it is worthwhile to take risks from his new book ‘Stunt Kids’.

Aimed at eight to 12 year-olds, the book tells the story of Glory, a young girl who grows up in a bubble.

Through a series of unlikely events, she ends up at a stunt camp where she and her new friends are assigned to a top-secret mission to stop a dastardly villain’s evil plot to control the world’s children.

Roberts said the book deals with the common belief that children need to be left to experience pain to learn lessons.

“It sort of subtly deals with anxiety and risky behaviour,” he said. “It’s about knowing when to take risks and when not to.

“It’s kind of both sides of the coin.”

Roberts said the initial reception from children at local schools and libraries has been positive.

“It seems to have struck a chord with both boys and girls,” he said.

Roberts has been a screenwriter for a number of Australian television projects, including ‘Little Lunch’ and ‘Upper Middle Bogan’.

He released his first children’s book, ‘A Dinosaur Ate Dad’s Hair’ in 2019.

Roberts said the book sold about 10,000 copies. “It just reached every home,” he said.

A 75-year-old Delehey man was severely injured while riding his bicycle on Kings Road near Bond Street in Taylors Lakes about 11am on Wednesday, July 6. Project driven by recycled glass The glass that’s recycled from bins has a new use – in Brimbank roads.

Brimbank council is working with the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) on an Australian-first project to trial finely crushed recycled glass in asphalt on two residential streets in Deer Park.

Council is the first local government area to lay this much glass in the road surface on its roads. It includes up to 10 per cent recycled glass and 25 per cent recycled asphalt.

The trial is broken up into six sections across 800 metres of road in Newbury Street and Gould Street, Deer Park.

Council is working closely with the ARRB to test and monitor the performance of the road surface over the next two years.

If the results of the trial are successful, it will significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, by allowing existing asphalt to be recycled and reused, council said.

Council will also advocate to the Department of Transport to create new technical standards for the use of increased recycled materials in road pavements in all local government areas.

This would outdate the current VicRoads standards which allow for up to 5 per cent recycled crushed glass in roads

Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the innovative road project is paving the way towards 100 per cent recycled roads.

“By testing and monitoring the innovative asphalt over the next two years, Brimbank can assist in the development of a new standard surface that incorporates more recycled materials, to be implemented in all future local government roads,” she said.

ARRB sustainability principal professional, Dr James Grenfell, said the trial is the first to use multiple suppliers of recycled crushed glass materials, and involved control sections without recycled glass, for comparison.

“It’s expected the recycled crushed glass mixes will perform just as well as the control mixtures. That will give us confidence moving forward that we can utilise recycled crushed glass in the road surface for local government both in rehabilitation and for re-sheeting purposes,” he said.

The project has been co-funded by council, Sustainability Victoria, ARRB and Department of Transport.

Council has partnered with ARRB, Fulton Hogan, Alex Fraser and Downer to develop the commercialisation of the new asphalt product.

Celebrating all genders Based in Brimbank, GenZine is a project that celebrates gender equity, providing a place for young people to explore, create, discuss and learn through art, connection and conversation.

It launched its third issue on Friday, July 8, with GenZine’s founders Hannah Veljanovska, Emily Bartush and Charlotte Cameron over the moon with the community response.

“It was emotional at the very end. Once we’d all packed up … we had a big group cuddle in the rain and went,’ oh my god, we just did that’,” Emily said.

Charlotte said: “Our ‘why’ came from realising that gender is still quite a big thing in our society, and it really holds people back a lot more than I think it frees them. So we’re just hoping to provide a space where we can kind of explore that a bit more creatively”.

provided with the theme ‘questioning’ and allowed creative freedom.

They created a piece reflecting their identity as a non-binary person, describing it as “a dance between all of the things” and creating an artwork that was quite fluid.

“Being non binary, there’s sort of this thing where non-binary people are expected to be androgynous, but my sense of self is not my aesthetic,” Chandra said.

“Having this chance and feeling like I’m a part of this growing collection of incredible queer artists and people who are exploring all of these things is really valuable to me.”

The GenZine community urges anyone to get involved, no matter their age, gender identity or background. The project has been been funded by Brimbank council and is partnered with Victoria University.

Creche closure paused for now

By Holly McGuinness The closure of the Sunshine Leisure Centre crèche has been paused while Brimbank council consults the community about the proposal.

As reported by Star Weekly, council announced in June that it would close the crèche to repurpose the space for group fitness classes amid dwindling demand for child care at the centre.

At the time, Brimbank community wellbeing director Lynley Dumble said the

crèche has been “significantly underutilised” for a number of years, even prior to COVID-19.

“From 2015 to 2018, there was an average of 5.2 visits per day to the crèche, but this dropped to 3.8 visits per day in 2019 prior to COVID. More recently this has dropped to two visits per day in February to March 2022, with only three families utilising the service,” she said.

Ms Dumble said that while demand for the crèche has fallen since the leisure centre reopened post-lockdown, there has been an

increase in demand for group fitness classes.

“A recent member survey with over 800 responses indicated less than one per cent of respondents used the crèche while it also identified a large unmet demand for additional group fitness and gym programs,” she said in June.

“Council looks forward to providing these additional services to meet the needs of its members and visitors.

“Council must make decisions on the spending of public money that are financially responsible and sustainable for our residents.”

The decision was challenged by The Greater Sunshine Community Alliance and Ardeer Community Club, with the groups calling on council to rethink its decision.

Council recently met with the alliance and agreed to pause the crèche closure and undertake a facility and program gender assessment audit, Ms Dumble said last week.

Council will also conduct further community consultation, she said.

In a statement on Facebook, the GSCA said the decision to pause the closure was a “better community outcome”.

Youth wellbeing hub is nearer Brimbank families will soon have access to a one-stop-shop for mental health care and health and wellbeing support, with a provider selected for municipality’s Infant, Child and Family Health and Wellbeing Hub. The hub is one of three being opened by the state and federal governments to provide a range of specialist medical and allied health services like paediatricians, psychologists, parenting support and speech pathologists under one roof, making support for mental health concerns easier for families.

IPC Health will run the Brimbank hub.

The state government said the hub will make seeking support easier for families with children aged 0-11 years experiencing developmental, behavioural and emotional challenges – including access to free assessments for development issues and autism.

Hub services will be designed in consultation with the community and people with lived experience, as well as local service providers, including Aboriginal Controlled Community Organisations, to ensure service offerings are tailored to local needs and build

on existing services and capacity, the state government said.

The federal government has provided $22.3 million to support the establishment and operation of the hubs.

Victorian Minister for Mental Health Gabrielle Williams said the hubs will be a one-stop-shop for families.

“For too long, there has been a gap in getting younger children the age-appropriate care they need for their wellbeing – these hubs will help deliver the care families need, when they need and closer to home,” she said.

Federal Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Emma McBride said demand for mental health support has surged to record levels across the country over the past three years.

She said young Australians in particular were experiencing higher rates of psychological distress.

“The federal government is proud to work side-by-side with the Victorian government to deliver critical, community-based support through these health and wellbeing hubs,” she said.

Youth Projects launched Youth Projects has expanded its mental health and employment services to benefit residents in the western suburbs, including those living in Brimbank.

The independent not-for-profit organisation has launched hubs in, St Albans, Sunshine, Taylors Lakes and Watergardens to help young people enter the workforce as part of the federal government’s Transition to Work program.

Youth Projects chief executive Ben Vasiliou said the Transition to Work initiative was “no ordinary jobs program”.

“We are strengths-based and work with young people to help them realise their full potential,” he said.

“Be it study, on the job training, skills certificates, traineeships, apprenticeships – this will all be part of the program.

“We look at the social determinants of health to support young people to live healthy, happy and productive lives.”

Since Transition to Work was launched

in north-west Melbourne in 2016, Youth Projects has supported 2160 young people find meaningful employment and education pathways and contributed to decreasing the unemployment rate in the region.

Mr Vasiolou said they were looking forward to expanding their services to young people in Melbourne’s west.

“Young people in the west of Melbourne need us most right now, and we aren’t going to sit around waiting for them to find us,“ he said.

“We’re taking our highly successful model from the north-west of Melbourne to the west to meet young people where they’re at and provide the opportunities they desperately need right now.

“The west is rich and vibrant with jobs and study options, and we’re on a mission to support 15,000 young people into growth industries like social and health care, technology and manufacturing to keep them connected with their local community.”

Watts Ward with Cr Lara Carli There’s lots going on in Watts Ward at the moment, and Council has been consulting with the community on a number of different major projects, including plans to duplicate Hume Drive between Gourlay Road and Calder Park Drive by increasing the existing two lanes to four lanes, and adding a new road median.

This much-needed project will improve the flow of traffic along Hume Drive and enhance the safety of road users. It includes works to widen and realign the road, constructing shared paths and footpath links, installing new public lighting, and finishing things off with new landscaping.

We’re also revitalising Banchory Green Reserve, Hillside, to provide more accessible play experiences for a broader range of ages, including improved turf kick-about spaces, increase shaded areas, plus seating and improved pedestrian pathways.

This project is set to commence

Last week I had the privilege of opening the new female friendly change rooms at Ian Cowie Recreation Reserve in Rockbank.

It’s our objective to have all-inclusive facilities across the City of Melton and I look forward to seeing participation rates of women and girls in sport continue to grow and thrive.

We’ve recently entered into four separate contracts for the upkeep of local roads, sportsgrounds, parks and trees. It makes sense to hire specialists in each field, and we’re delighted to partner with DM Roads, Green Options, GreenLife Group and Citywide to deliver improvements across our roads, parks, trees and sportgrounds.

Speaking of facilities, we’ve submitted funding applications totalling $6.5 million to the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund to help fund key community projects such as Aintree Community Centre, Plumpton Community Centre and Neighbourhood House, Weir Views Community Centre, a Parks Development project, Melton Town Centre Kids Zone, and improvements to the Melton Animal Pound.

We have a great track record for funding across the previous rounds, successfully obtaining $41.8 million to support the delivery of other community projects. We hope this round is no different and look forward to working with the State Government to continue to deliver much-needed infrastructure for our fast-growing community.

‘Concerning’ gambling losses fall

By Holly McGuinness Spending on electronic gaming machines (EGMs) in Brimbank has dropped for the first time in two months, new data reveals.

According to the latest Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) data, the total amount lost at poker machines in Brimbank in May was $14.7 million.

In April and March, $15.25 million was lost at EGMS in Brimbank.

Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the municipality’s pokies losses continued to concern council.

“Unfortunately electronic gaming machine gambling expenditure in Brimbank remains high,” she said.

“Council continues to call on the Victorian government to reduce gaming venue operating hours.”

Brimbank still holds the highest losses to gambling on EGMs across the state, ahead of the City of Casey by $1.5 million.

Monash University’s head of gambling and social determinants unit, Associate Professor Charles Livingstone, said it was too early to tell if rising costs of living would impact on pokies spending.

“[The results] may be a small ‘blip’ because of inflation, or it may indeed signal some progress on harm prevention,” he said.

“If real cost of living exceeds wage rises, we may see a continuation of this trend. However, a recession, triggering unemployment, etc, may see increased spending as people become more stressed and anxious about their future.

“Some areas may have relatively high levels of social or economic stress, triggering higher expenditure.”

Associate Professor Livingstone believes there are numerous initiatives communities

can adopt to reduce gambling stigmas while simultaneously stressing the harms. “[Avoid] unhelpful terms like ‘problem gambling’, ‘responsible gambling’ and ‘problem gamble’, [ focus] on the way EGMs are designed to be addictive, and helping increase awareness of their ability to consume significant amounts of money very quickly may be more helpful,” he said.

“Communities should also pressure local and state governments to reduce the availability of EGM gambling, through reductions in opening hours and the number of venues and EGMs within communities.”

Giving back gets results Sunshine Hospital will receive new equipment thanks to a newly formed philanthropist group in the west, Women for Western Health Giving Circle.

The equipment will assist in diagnosing and reducing the risks associated with birth-related tears and minimise long-term complications.

Western Health head of urogynaecology Oliver Daly applied for the grant and brought to light a patient’s experience following a severe tear during childbirth.

Dr Daly said the patient suffered in silence for some time and experienced long-term complications as a result. If this new equipment was available at the time of birth it could have helped her significantly, he said.

“This grant means that we will be able to purchase the equipment immediately to help more than 150 patients each year … who experience severe tears during childbirth at Sunshine Hospital. Thank you to the Women

for Western Health Giving Circle members and the Western Health Foundation for their support,”Dr Daly said.

The group was formed in 2021 as a way to give back to the community, raising $57,000 in its first 12 months.

Western Health Foundation director Julia Harper said: “The giving circle is a trailblazing new way to give back to the community.

“Together they’ve had an immediate impact on improving the health outcomes of women giving birth at Sunshine Hospital.”

Dreamtime stories on display Aunty Jean Mason’s Dreamtime stories art exhibition had its official launch at the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre on Thursday, July 14.

Aunty Jean began making her art when she was much younger as a way to retell stories told by her own mother.

Her work stands as a representation of her culture as a Bakindji woman from Wilcannia, who now lives in Brimbank.

Aunty Jean recently featured in the documentary ‘Blak Voices of Brimbank,’ a collection of stories from first nations people across, in which she spoke in detail about her artwork and the meaning behind two of her larger pieces.

The exhibition will be on display until Thursday, July 28.

Donating a second chance at life Despite Australia being a world leader for successful transplant outcomes, the Royal Children’s Hospital says there are more children on the waiting list for transplants than there are organs available. Fatima Halloum speaks to the sister of an organ recipient about the life-changing procedure.

ooming down slides at playgrounds and splashing in the shallows of a public pool are some of the simple joys of childhood.

At only six-years-old, Hussein Ahmed knew he couldn’t do what other kids could.

His older sister Ikram says her brother was desperate to live a normal life.

“He tended to attract a lot of attention, and he didn’t like that at all. He didn’t like people kind of treating him differently or just singling him out,” she says.

There are some illnesses that are easier to hide, but when Hussein was diagnosed with nephronophthisis in 2013 and his kidneys began declining, doctors attached a nasogastric tube to the young boy.

“Essentially, it’s a tube through his nose which goes all the way to his stomach, and he had nutrients that he took at night that helped him grow, because he wasn’t growing,” Ikram says.

Sleepless nights and constant trips to the hospital became a normal day in the Truganina family’s household.

Ikram says her brother’s kidney function levels began to rapidly decrease, and he was put on dialysis for about two years.

“He was always aware of his condition, he would take everything as it goes,” she says.

“He’s had so many operations throughout his whole lifetime … he never cried, always took everything as it is.

“He’s a very firm believer that God does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear.”

When Hussein was about eight years old, his condition further worsened, and he was placed on a waiting list for a new kidney Four years later, Ikram was startled awake by

her mother’s screams in the living room.

“I wanted to see what was going on and I just saw a massive smile on her face, but like, tears quickly coming down from her eyes,” she says.

“It was like, ‘is it possible?’ and then we found out that obviously she got the call.”

Not only was Ahmed finally going to receive a kidney, he was scheduled for surgery that same day.

“We were just crying out of pure excitement and happiness,” she says.

That day was the first time Hussein cried too, Ikram says.

“We don’t know who the organ donor is, but we’re just obviously really grateful … always keeping them in our dua (prayers),” she says.

Hussein’s experience inspired Ikram to study nursing and register as an organ donor.

“I’d love to help people as much as they’ve helped my family, and sort of repay that favour,” she says.

“Your registration as an organ donor can have a major effect on a person’s life.”

DonateLife state medical director Rohit D’Costa is renewing calls for people to consider signing up too.

“We’ve seen about a 25 per cent decrease in donation and transplantation over the past two years due to the impacts of COVID-19,” Dr D’Costa says.

“This is why it’s never been more important to encourage more people in the community to register as organ and tissue donors and to have the conversation with family.”

Dr D’Costa says there are about 1750 Australians currently on the organ transplant list, an additional 13,000 people on dialysis who could benefit from a kidney transplant,

and others who require an eye, or tissue to improve their quality of life.

“We know many religions and cultural groups support organ and tissue donation and we need organ and tissue donors from all these communities and cultures,” Dr D’Costa says.

“Blood and tissue types need to match for a transplant to be successful, and while ethnicity is never a consideration in either donor or recipient selection, having more diversity in organ donors can help with finding a match.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are, your medical history, your lifestyle, what country you’re from, or how healthy you are – you can still register as an organ and tissue donor. Even if you’ve had COVID or the flu, you can register.”

Hussein is now 15-years-old, and Ikram is in her last year of studying nursing.

She says the selfless act of a donor means her younger brother gets to experience life.

“Prior to his organ transplant, he did not like going out … because he wasn’t always able to absorb or digest food properly, he would always throw up,” she says.

Students urge care for healthcare

By Sunehra Ahmed After the pandemic has strained Australian hospitals, the public has become more aware of the importance of healthcare workers in our society. This year, a group of students from Catholic Regional College are advocating for better health and safety of healthcare workers in Victoria.

Students, Sacreana Ulugia-Sa’ena, Thomas Cheal, Adongluge Fadiet, Angela Tu, Kenzi Tamani, and Alicia Almeida were one of the 20 groups of young Victorians who participated in 2022’s YMCA Victorian Youth Parliament.

The team wrote and sponsored the ‘Heath Care Labour Protections and Opportunity Bill’, which seeks to improve the working conditions for healthcare workers by providing support to help their physical and mental wellbeing, ensuring that burnout is avoided as much as possible in the industry.

As part of Youth Parliament, the bill was debated in the Parliament House of Victoria and passed after a majority vote. The bill will be further evaluated by Youth Minister Ros Spence, along with the other passing bills.

“Due to the impact of COVID, especially since a lot more people are now in hospitals, the staff in comparison to the amount of people who are getting sick is greatly decreasing. So a lot of healthcare workers are having to take on a lot more work than they usually need to,” Miss Ulugia-Sa’ena says.

“We just need to take care of everybody and each other. And so this bill specifically looks at healthcare workers, because they’ve been working the hardest during this pandemic.”

The bill also wants to further improve working conditions in the healthcare industry by establishing the Healthcare Protection Agency; a group comprised of members of the Department of Health and Human Services

concern healthcare workers such as increasing demand, violence in the workplace, and a lack of support services in the community.

“Health is expanding and growing and it’s also a female-dominated industry so it should be supported,” he says.

“We should all be working towards

whatever we can do to retain and keep staff working,” Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia’s nursing workforce was already facing labour shortages as nurses left the profession due to increasing work demand and burnout.

While there was an increase in registered nurses after 2019, there is still a struggle to meet rising work demands. Recently, the Victorian government announced a $3000 bonus for healthcare workers in order to keep staff employed.

Stephanie Thuesen from HACSU is supportive of the bill as she feels that the mental well-being and physical safety of healthcare workers are being ignored compared to other blue-collar jobs, due to their classification as a “caring industry”.

“Routinely, I would go out to a site, and a nurse would have been punched and the aftercare is not there. And it’s really difficult because if this happened on a construction site, I know the aftercare would have been there. All of these things were already happening [before covid],” Thuesen says.

The students from CRC also aim to get more young people interested in the healthcare field, by proposing an education program for high school students in their bill. CRC student Thomas Cheal emphasises the importance of young people in making a difference to our healthcare system. “Through this bill, we’d like to open up every opportunity possible to anyone who seeks to enter the medical field and to drum up support. Because this is a, very professional and respectable field, and we hope to increase the standing of our young,” he says.

Faith and Catholic identity are seen as more than just words at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College – rather, they are embodied in genuine and thoughtful actions towards supporting the community and the wider world. Hybrid Peugeot lifts the bar

By Chris Riley, Marque Motoring The Peugeot 300 Hybrid car looks amazing and confirms the French know a thing or two about style. The detail in the complex front design with its dark chrome grille is exceptional and integrates striking LED lighting unlike anything else you might have seen, especially at night.

Inside, quilted Nappa leather seats with their contrast stitching look top shelf, but we found them a little small and uncomfortable.

One of the hallmarks of the brand is its tiny steering wheels and high-mounted instrument cluster, designed to replace the need for a head-up display.

The 3008 plug-in hybrid is a well-equipped car. You get partial leather and twin zone climate air with rear seat air vents, Lime Wood dash and door trim, blue ambient cabin lighting, heated front seats, a power-adjust driver’s seat with massage plus keyless entry and push-button start.

The instrument panel is digital and fully customisable, a 360-degree camera, parking sensors front and rear, semi-autonomous parking assist (90 degree and parallel), adaptive cruise control with stop and go, automatic high beam, speed sign recognition and recommendation and hands-free tailgate.

The plug-in hybrid comes with a mode two charging cable, supplied with the vehicle at time of delivery. (Note the bag for the cable is an $87 accessory).

Infotainment Infotainment consists of a 10.0-inch touchscreen, with Bluetooth, voice recognition, built-in satellite navigation, DAB+ radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

Until recently it also came with a premium 10-speaker, 515-watt Focal sound system, but due to supply problems this is temporarily unavailable.

There’s three 12V sockets (dashboard, rear cabin and load area), with a single USB Type A socket for the front and another two for the back seat.

Driving

The plug-in hybrid features a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine, two electric motors and a 13.2kWh battery.

The petrol engine is good for 147kW of power at 6000 rpm and 300Nm of torque at 3000 rpm.

The electric motor that drives the front wheels delivers 81kW at 2500 and 320Nm from 500-2500 rpm, while the motor for the rear axle adds another 83kW at 14,000 rpm and 166Nm from 0-4760 rpm.

Together the system pumps out a combined output of 222kW and 520Nm. Drive is to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission which has a wet, multi-plate clutch to manage input from the three different power sources.

Fuel consumption, which is supposedly what it is all about, is a claimed 1.6L/100km from a 43-litre tank, and it produces 36.4 g/km of CO2.

Charging from zero per cent to full capacity takes about five and a half hours using a 2.3kW Mode 2 cable and offers 60km (WLTP) of emissions free, pure electric drive.

That’s enough we’re told to take care of the daily commute, that is if you live within 30km of work. If you’re lucky enough to have access to a charger, it’s 60km each way.

In our week with the car, we were using 6.8L/100km after 400km which is pretty good, even with little help from the battery.

The batteries et al add about 415kg of weight to the car, which tips the scales at 1815kg.

There are gear change paddles and four drive modes to go with the 222kW/520Nm and as you can imagine it gets mobile.

Ride and handling is pretty good for a car that has not benefited from Australian tuning, but this has always been Peugeot’s forte.

The small steering wheel takes some getting used to, and the gear change is a bit fiddly.

Default drive mode is electric which means it uses up the battery first.

Safety Five-star safety includes six airbags and automatic emergency braking that detects pedestrians and cyclists in low light conditions, and operates between 5km/h and 140km/h.

There’s also driver warning alert, active blind spot monitoring and lane keeping assistance with detection of roadsides.

IsoFix child seat mounts are located on the outboard seats.

Future prospects: Youth the way to go for the Jets The Western Jets have one eye on the future in the NAB League Boys competition.

The Jets have won just two games this season, as they have felt the flow on effects from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coach Robbie Chancellor said it had been tough at times this season.

“We have been a bit thin on talent,” he said.

“It’s the nature of the last two years that has hurt the region with the commitment to football and not being at school or playing football.

“It has dropped away and we’ve been trying hard with the community coaches to get them back in and playing.”

The Jets’ stocks were further hurt with co-captain Massimo D’Ambrosio being picked up in AFL mid-season draft.

The defender has since played four AFL games and was nominated for the AFL rising star award.

Chancellor said while they were disappointed to lose D’Ambrosio, they were thrilled with how he had performed at the highest level.

“He was our best player,” Chancellor said.

“He was always talented enough and he’s

getting the job done.

“We were confident in him being able to do that if he got the opportunity. He deserved it.”

While results wise hasn’t been great for the Jets, it has meant that a number of players have gotten their opportunities.

Chancellor said they had virtually played everyone on the list so far.

‘We’ve gone more youthful,” he said. “A lot of 17-year-olds have played with an eye on the future.

“Hopefully they’ll keep getting opportunities at this level and we can see which ones adapt quickly at this level and what next year might look like.”

Diesel Moloney, Darcy Weeks, Logan Morris

and Jake Smith are four players who have impressed Chancellor.

Jack Kovacevic is another younger player. He made his debut last season.

The Jets had the weekend off with a development round, with matches involving Vic Metro and Vic Country.

Chancellor was part of the Vic Metro coaching set up.

The Jets this week face the Greater Western Victoria Rebels on Saturday afternoon.

With a number of home games in the run home, Chancellor is hoping to finish on a high.

“Hopefully we will get our strongest team on the park by the end of the year,” he said.

“The nature of the league with the wildcard round, we have the chance to knock a few teams off.

“It will be good to have a good run of games at Willy [Williamstown] and Werribee.

“To play in front of our friends and family, we haven’t done much of that. Hopefully home advantage leads to us playing some good footy.”

Every win an imperative

By Tara Murray Every game is a must win for Caroline Springs George Cross in the run home in the FV state league 1 north-west competition.

The Georgies sit on top of the ladder with four rounds to go, with the four of the top five sides also having a catch up game to come as well.

Heading into the weekend’s matches, which were after deadline, the Stallions were five points clear of second. Just four points were then separating second through to fifth, showing how close the competition is.

While the Georgies are in the box seat for the championship and promotion, coach Eric Vassiliadis said there was still a lot of hard work to go.

“Looking at the ladder tells you there are so many important games,” he said. “We will just focus on what we can control.

“We’ve put ourselves in a position where we’ve put our promotion hopes in our own hands.”

a couple of losses to championship hopefuls, the Georgies have responded with good wins against Altona City and the Brimbank Stallions in recent weeks.

The win over the Stallions, who beat them the first time round, puts them nine points ahead of the fifth placed Stallions and ensured the Georgies have a bit of breathing room on the other sides.

“I have no problems with losses, it’s how you respond to losses,” he said. “Two very strong teams had beaten us in tight contests.

“Every game is a big game at the moment.

The season is in the balance, but I’m so proud of the boys and the whole club.

“We’re not far from where we want to be.”

Vassiliadis said the squad had thinned out for various reasons, but it provided opportunities for other players at the club.

Against the Stallions, 18-year-old Jack Wardle got the start and scored twice in the win in positive signs for the future.

Vassiliadis said they would continue to focus on one week at a time.

Of the teams still in championship

contention, the Georiges play Strathmore and Banyule City in the run home.

On Saturday, they were set to face Corio at home.

“They are the form team of the competition,” he said before the match. “They’ve won four of their last five games.

“We need to make sure we get up in this one.”

Vassiliadis said the club had ticked a lot of boxes in the last three years, but were keen to continue building.

“We want to take the club from strength to strength.”

In other matches that were due to be played on Saturday after deadline, third-placed Sydenham Park was due to play Yarraville Glory, while the Stallions were set to face second-placed Essendon Royals in a massive match in the context of the season.

In state league 2 north-west, Westgate and Albion Rovers are still in the mix for the second promotion spot.

On Friday night, the Rovers were set to face Mill Park, while Westgate was due to face top side Upfield on Saturday.

As Calder United’s dream for a fifth straight Nike F.C Cup title remains on track, coach Mark Torcaso said this one would be the most special.

United won through to the grand final on Tuesday night with a 1-0 win against Bulleen Lions in the knock-out competition.

Calder will now face South Melbourne in the grand final, a repeat of last year’s final which Calder won 3-0.

Torcaso said if they could claim this one, it would be pretty special. Having promoted a number of younger players this season, the coaching staff had no expectations this season.

“It is crazy,” he said. “Some of the girls have been part of everyone, all five, while others are part of it for the first time.

“This one is really special. There’s a lot of young girls, which is really exciting.

The young players have done really well and every player in the squad has contributed.”

The semi final against the Bulleen Lions was a tough one at ABD Valley Stadium in Broadmeadows was a tough one.

Torcaso said they needed to have some extra run in their legs, with the stadium bigger than what they were used to playing on.

The game was headed for an extra time until a goal from Mel Taranto in the 80th minute gave Calder the lead.

It was enough, as Calder won 1-0.

“It was a really tough game,” Torcaso said. “We had a few out with injury and it being a mid-week game as well.

“The game was going to be decided by something special. Mel got the ball inside the box and turned her opponent before finding the top corner of the next.

“It was the difference.”

Calder didn’t have much time to rest, with the side back in action on Saturday against the Emerging Matildas, after deadline.

Calder was sitting on top of the table, two points clear of Heidelberg United.

“We’ll continue juggling both competitions, which is always a good thing at Calder,“ Torcaso said.

Thunder import makes impact felt Keilor Thunder big man Jacob Lampkin is making his presence felt in the National Basketball League 1 South competition.

Lampkin, who joined the Thunder this season as they moved into the NBL1 competition, was named the competition’s player of the week for round 11.

The standout game among his two in round 11, was against the Melbourne Tigers when he shot 41 points.

The forward-centre said he is enjoying his time at Keilor.

“It’s been good,” he said. “The season hasn’t gone to plan as we lost a lot of games, but we’ve now won three in a row.

“It’s a terrific feeling to get the player of the week and be recognised as the best player in the league for the week.

“The hard work is paying off.”

While it’s Lampkin’s first season at the Thunder, he has been in Australia since March 2020. He came out from America to play basketball and has been here since.

“I came out here in March 2020 and got stuck out there due to COVID-19,” he said. “I met a girl out here and have stayed.

“I played with Keysborough in the Big V competition, but I wanted to play in the NBL1 competition.

“I talked to Liam [Glascott, Thunder coach] and they needed someone in my position. Liam also seemed like a good coach for me.”

Lampkin sits 10th in the competition for average points per game this season, with 20 points per game.

He said he was enjoying the challenge of playing at a higher level.

“The teams are much deeper and athletic than in the Big V,” he said. “There’s not a huge difference.

“I’ve been pushing and playing some great basketball. I’m learning more every game. I’m doing what I can to see me play well and help the side accumulate some more wins.”

While Lampkin is away from home, there’s a familiar face lining up besides him each

week, Tyler Kidd.

The two first met when they were 14 and went to high school together in America.

Lampkin said it was pretty cool to have the opportunity to play together on the other side of the world.

“That was unexpected,” he said. “Liam was looking for someone in his position and I recommended him.

“It’s pretty cool.”

With three wins in a row heading into the weekend’s double header against Eltham and Frankston, which were after deadline, the Thunder have started to look at home in the competition.

Lampkin said the morale in the group was growing.

“We need to keep getting the wins,” he said.

“We’re 5-10 at the moment and it’s going to be tough to get into finals.

“We need to keep winning and see what happens.”

Little lapses hurt Knights

By Tara Murray Melbourne Knights believe they aren’t far from turning close results into more points in the National Premier League.

It’s been a tough period for the Knights in the past five rounds, with two losses, two draws and their match with Green Gully postponed.

Knights Steve Bebic said ahead of their match with the Eastern Lions, which was after deadline, that they had been playing some good soccer without getting the results.

“It has been a difficult few weeks,” he said.

“Against St Albans it was close. We performed at a high level, but we had a lapse of concentration.

“Hume [City] is always a difficult game and they are a team fighting for survival in the league. We had little errors early.

‘We conceded a penalty and we missed a penalty as well. Our performances have been on a decent standard and we haven’t been blown off the park at all.”

Bebic said while they had been able to match it with the top sides, the side’s inexperience showed at key moments.

The Knights have one of the youngest squads in the competition.

“Our average age is 22 or 22 and half,” he said.

“With a young squad you get ups and downs with results.

“At times there’s a little bit of lack of concentration along the way. You need to concentrate for the whole 90 to 95 minutes at this level.

“Most of the results don’t do justice to the types of matches that we’ve played.”

With such a young squad, the Knights looked to add a bit more top end talent during the transfer window.

Newcastle Jets’ Dylan Murnane joined the Knights after playing in the most recent A-League season.

George Ott is another with A-League experience. He played two games for the Wellington Phoenix in the 2021-22 season.

Taylor Schrijvers has crossed the ditch from New Zealand, with the central defender captaining his side over there.

“With a young group we looked to bring in a little bit more experience,” Bebic said.

“They are not only good players, but players who can add their knowledge. There’s those little moments in games, where experienced players can lead on the park.”

The Knights entered the weekend’s match with the Eastern Lions sitting in ninth spot.

They were 10 points behind sixth placed Green Gully.

There are four rounds to go, with both the Knights and the Cavaliers with a game in hand on the rest of the competition.

Bebic said they would keep working hard and hope that they finally see some reward for their hard work.

“Mathematically we can still make finals,” he said.

“We will not give up until it’s not possible.

“I think from our perspective we have to keep working. Hopefully we get a good run of results.”

In other matches on the weekend, the Cavaliers were set to face the St Albans Saints on Friday night.

In NPL 3, North Sunshine Eagles were due to face the Springvale White Eagles, while Western United was to play Melbourne Victory.

Keilor St Bernard’s Athletic Club’s Mitchel Langborne exceeded all his expectations at the recent Oceania Track and Field Championships.

Representing Australia, the Wallan teenager won a medal in the under-20 1500 metres event.

He finished just 0.07 seconds behind the winner, New Zealand’s James Harding.

“It was great,” Langborne said of winning silver. “I expected to place in the top four but more likely third or fourth.

[The] time wasn’t really important as it was a tactical race.”

The championships were the first time that Langborne had made an Australian team.

He said he was very honoured to make the team.

Earlier this year, he made the final of the under-20 1500 metres at the Australian Track and Field Championships, finishing fifth. He also competed in the heats of the 800 metres at the same event.

He finished third in the under-20 1500 at the state titles as well this years.

The word stage is a long way from when he started at Kilmore and District Little Athletics when he was five.

Since then he has risen up the ranks and relies on public transport and his mum to get him between school, training and home.

Langborne, who also runs the 800 metres, said improving his times was his next focus with his running.

Langborne isn’t the only Keilor St. Bernard’s athletes have had some success on the international stage in recent weeks.

Rebecca Bain won bronze in the 4 x 400 metre relay at the Pacific Mini Games in Saipan. She also finished fourth in the 4 x 100 metre relay and fifth in the women’s 100 metre finals.

Celebrations over, it’s back to business for United It’s back to business for Western United as pre-season got under way last week.

After a few weeks of celebrating the club’s first championship, the playing group returned to training last week.

Star defender Josh Risdon said they were all excited to get back on the track.

“It was a good little break,” he said.

“Obviously it’s a bit different winning the grand final and celebrating for a while.

“I really enjoyed the break and got back home to see some family and spend some quality time with them.

“I’m ready to get back into it.”

Risdon said despite the success of last season, the group’s motivation was high and they were keen to do it again.

He said there was still a real buzz around the group.

“Everyone has come back in good knick

and everyone has looked after themselves after the celebrations,” he said. “Everyone is committed to doing well again this season and has come back in good knick and ready for our [Australia] cup game in less than a month.

“It is going to be a quick turnaround to then, so we wanted to make sure that we came back in good shape, so we are right to go for round one of the cup.

“We want to do that all again … that feeling I had for so long that whole off season was incredible and it made me want to come back and do it all again.”

United’s first week back included the two-kilometre time trial. Adisu Bayew won the time trial ahead of Seb Pasquali and Ben Garuccio.

With the majority of the championship squad returning for another tilt, Ridson said they just need to get back to what they did last

season and go from there.

“We’re trying not to focus on that end goal at first,” he said. “We have to get back to training and doing what we do best every day, which is working hard. I think respecting our values and every day living … and just enjoy being together again.

“I think that is what made us so successful last year, being a close tight knit group and enjoying each other’s company and working hard every day.

“Having the majority of the squad together again, it is awesome to familiarise with each other again.

We can pick up where we left off, with the culture we created, anyone who comes in will buy into the values of the club and fit in quite perfectly here.”

Sports shorts EDFL Keilor Park had no troubles against Taylors Lakes in the Essendon District Football League division 2 on Saturday.

The Devils took control of the game in the second quarter after being goal less in the first. A 10-goal final quarter would seal the big win, 19.9 (123)-3.9 (27). Damien Cavka kicked five goals.

Burnside Heights came away with the win against Jacana, 27.24 (186)-6.9 (27). In division 1, Hillside beat Craigieburn, 12.11 (83)-5.9 (39).

By Tara Murray The City West Falcons produced some of their best netball in their massive win in the Victorian Netball League Championship on Wednesday night.

Facing third-placed Melbourne University, the Falcons had the opportunity to lock up second spot and a double-chance with one round remaining.

Despite missing four players from their squad, the Falcons came away with a 78-43 win.

Falcons coach Marg Lind said they couldn’t have imagined a win like that when they turned up at the State Netball and Hockey Centre to play.

Mel Oloamanu, Uneeq Palavi, Soli Ropati and Lucia Fauonuku were among five Falcons missing across the club, due to being part of the World Cup 2023 regional qualifiers in Fiji.

“It’s a bit crazy,” she said. “I think there was a fair bit of underlying desperation.

“They all came out with good intent and had to put it all out there .

“We were playing for the double chance and the Falcons seem to play well when something is on the line.”

Lind said the first half was pretty tight on the scoreboard, with the side playing some good netball.

She said the scoreboard didn’t reflect how they were playing.

We would get it out to two or three goals, before a turnover,” she said. “The defenders started turning over a lot more ball and it came off early in the third quarter.”

Lind said the second half was some of their best netball they had played in a long time.

She said knowing that they were playing with a smaller squad and the group was likely to play big minutes instead of a high number of rotations might have played a bit of a role.

Jessie Barnes-Hill, who played for the Falcons last season, came down from Shepparton, to help provide an option at both ends.

Sophie Hanrahan came up from division 1 and played in wing defence. Lind said she did a good job in the second half, despite playing out of position.

Tharjini Sivalingham and Maddison Mckiernan, who both played a half in division 1 earlier in the night, were also suited up in case they were needed.’

“They both took to the court in the last quarter,” she said. “They were rewarded for helping us out.

“Our division 1 was meant to play after us, but they switched our games around, which worked for us.

“It meant we could take a few more risks without it costing a game in division 1.”

WRFL Albion’s finals hopes remain alive in the Western Region Football League division 2 competition. On Saturday, the Cats got a vital win against North Footscray. The Cats held a slim lead at every break, winning 9.10 (64)-7.11 (53). Ben Doll kicked five goals. The Cats sit in fifth spot, four points behind fourth. In other results, Newport beat Glen Orden, Point Cook Centrals snuck home against Parkside and Wyndhamvale beat West Footscray.

NPL Green Gully came away with the points against St Albans Saints on Friday night in the National Premier League. The Cavaliers scored in the sixth minute to take the lead, with no other scoring for much of the game. Alex Salmon scored in the 90th minute to seal the 2-0 win. The Cavaliers sit sixth, but have a game in hand on the sides above. The Melbourne Knights had a 2-0 win against the Eastern Lions. In NPL 3, North Sunshine Eagles beat the Springvale White Eagles, 3-2.

She said Zoe Davies was really strong in the second half in defence, while Jane Cook took some good balls in the shooting circle.

Maddy Gray and Sarah Szczykulski also had solid games.

The win means the Falcons will finish second and face the Geelong Cougars for a spot in the grand final in the first week of finals.

Before then they face Boroondara Express in

the final round. The four girls who missed the game against Melbourne University will also miss that game Lind said knowing the top two spot was locked up the pressure was off in the final round.

The division 1 side, which also beat the Lightning, had already secured their finals position.

A win in the final round will be enough for the under-19s to play finals.

Westgate’s hopes of promotion remain alive after an upset win against Upfield on Friday night. Westgate knocked off the top side 3-0, scoring twice within a five-minute period midway through the second half. Westgate sit in fourth spot on 32 points, only two points behind second and third, but have a game in hand. Albion Rovers lost 5-2 to Mill Park. Western Suburbs had a 1-1 draw with Moreland United.
