Pokie losses skyrocket By Olivia Condous Gambling is on the rise across the western suburbs and continues to be a pressing issue for many communities, including Melton. The latest data from the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission reveals that the monthly amount lost by those using poker machines at Melton venues rose to more than $7.2 million in March this year. This is an increase of more than $600,000 from March, 2021, and more than $1.9 million from 2019. The total amount lost to gambling in Melton

for the current financial year is $20,207,518. The gambling losses come from seven Melton venues that host poker machines, with Mac’s Hotel, West Waters Hotel and Sugar Gum Hotel having the highest amount lost in the current financial year. Melton council community planning manager Elyse Rider said reducing the harms from gambling was a priority for the council. “Council’s gambling harm prevention and reduction policy aims to address gambling related harms by setting limits on gambling product design, placement and marketing, assessing the location of new gambling

establishments, limiting minors’ exposure to gaming floors, and more,” Ms Rider said. According to the Alliance for Gambling Reform, the total gambling loss in Victoria for the month of March this year was $257.3 million. Alliance for Gambling Reform chief advocate Tim Costello said the March losses added to a total of almost $1 billion dollars lost to gambling in Victoria so far. “Many of the LGAs with the highest losses are also some of the most stressed communities,” Mr Costello said. “It’s clear that the industry’s business model

is built upon exploiting the most vulnerable among us to inflate their profits,” Mr Costello said further harm reduction measures were needed to stop industry “bigwigs” from turning local pubs and clubs into “mini-casinos”. “We also need well-resourced educational campaigns aimed at bringing awareness to this ongoing crisis, if we are to successfully reduce the harm being caused by poker machines we need to bring the community along with us.” The Alliance for Gambling Reform is partially funded by 22 Victorian councils. Melton council does not contribute any funding.

Coalition’s farm safety pledge By Olivia Condous

Strategy launched by Farmsafe Australia last year. The strategy outlines five key areas such as leadership and culture, the next generation of farmers, physical and psychological well-being, education and incentivisation in order to improve farm safety in Australia. Ballan livestock and cropping farmer Scott Young said any money that could be put into farm safety was “fantastic”. “It has been a very dangerous industry in the past,” Mr Young said. “Working with large animals and heavy machinery, there’s always the chance that

Melton and Moorabool farmers could benefit from a farm safety funding boost from the federal government. The Coalition has pledged $10 million to improve farm safety awareness and culture in the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors if the party is re-elected in the upcoming election. The funding will go towards expanding and improving farm safety practices and work on addressing the investment priorities set out in the National Farm Safety Education Fund

something can go wrong, “So the more education we can get out there to farmers, the more programs that can be run to educate people.” Mr Young said the funding of better safety measures on farms would be beneficial, to help farmers invest in newer, safer machinery. “There is a hunger within the farming community to drive safety and to make our industry a lot safer, “Anything that the government can do to assist the farming community to drive that safety message is great.” Agriculture minister David Littleproud said

the Coalition was committed to improving safety for one of the country’s most dangerous workplaces. “We are committed to improving safety awareness and safety culture in the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, so that farmers, fishers, foresters, and their workers and families stay safe,” Mr Littleproud said. “While less than one in 20 people work in agriculture, one in five fatalities in the workplace occur on farms, “Our government wants to reduce the risk to farmers and improve safety on farms.”

More car parks for Bacchus Marsh Bacchus Marsh residents will benefit from more free car parks through a new project from the state government. Maddingley Park Reserve will gain 100 free car parks in order to meet the demands of the growing community. The project will also benefit the community in creating more local jobs during the construction period. The project is part of the government’s Regional Car Parks Fund, which will build 2000 car parks across regional Victoria. The new car park project will upgrade and

expand on the existing parking around the Maddingley Park Reserve sports precinct to combat parking pressure in the area. Additional and accessible car parking is a key focus for Moorabool council as the area is expected to grow by 25 per cent by 2031, with most of the population residing in Bacchus Marsh. Regional Development Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said Bacchus Marsh was quickly becoming a major regional Victorian hub. “It’s important that we support the community’s growth now and into the future with more free

and accessible parking, while supporting local jobs,” Melton MP Steve McGhie said additional car parks were crucial for the future of Bacchus Marsh as a growing regional city. “More car parking spaces will make the day that little bit smoother for all locals, who live and work in Bacchus Marsh,” Mr McGhie said. The statewide project will also support 1000 new car park spaces in Ballarat and 900 spaces in town centres throughout the Latrobe Valley.

A new digital art exhibition has opened in Caroline Springs that features a multi-sensory, augmented reality experience. Dis-Repair is a collection of works by upcoming Melbourne artist Annie Murray, designed to challenge perspectives on life and take the viewer on a journey through dystopian worlds. The animated exhibition features 10 large digital artworks that make up an immersive experience, incorporating augmented reality technology. Viewers can download a free phone app and use their advice to experience an augmented reality version of each piece. The exhibition also features an original music score by Paul Fletcher and narration from actor Tom Richards. Mayor Goran Kesic said he hoped the exhibition would provide great insight, ignite curiosity and spark the imagination. “We are very excited to see this exhibition here in our city, created by an extremely talented artist, and hope to create conversations around hope and reconnection in the face of adversity,” Cr Kesic said. “We invite locals and visitors to come along to the exhibition and be captivated by the experience, uncovering the meanings behind each piece within the collection.” Dis-Repair will run until July 28 at the CS Gallery in Caroline Springs. Candidates vie for new seat By Olivia Condous On Saturday, May 21, Melton and Moorabool residents will head to polling booths to elect the next government, and voters will need to weigh up a number of candidates and local issues when making their decision. The local government areas of Melton and Moorabool are mostly covered by the new federal electorate of Hawke, named after former prime minister Bob Hawke. The seat of Hawke was created after the last federal election as part of a routine redistribution, and extends from the eastern boundaries of Ballarat up until the western suburbs of Melton. Hawke also includes the southern suburbs of the City of Hume, such as Sunbury and Bulla.

The City of Melton will be split in half by the new redistribution, with Eynesbury, Cobblebank and Plumpton residents voting for Hawke candidates, while residents in Caroline Springs, Mount Cottrell and Truganina will vote in the seat of Gorton. The electorate of Gorton is a smaller area, which also covers the western suburbs of the City of Brimbank, such as Keilor, Deer Park and Sydenham. The seat of Hawke is notionally considered a Labor seat with a 10.2 per cent margin, as the original seats of Ballarat and Gorton recorded Labor majorities in the previous federal election. The seat of Gorton is considered a very safe Labor seat with a margin of 14.2 per cent. Brendan O’Connor from the Labor party has

held this seat since 2004. In the new seat of Hawke, there are 11 candidates for voters to choose from. Former Victorian state secretary Sam Rae is the candidate for the Labor party, university professor Dr Enamul Haque represents the Liberal party and Lynda Wheelock is the candidate for the Greens. Andrew Cuthbertson will run for the United Australia Party, Jack Hynes for the Victorian Socialists Party, Glenn Vessey for the Citizens Party, Michael Lacey for the Great Australian Party and Jarrod Bingham will run as an independent candidate. In Gorton, there are nine candidates running, with Praise Morris as the Greens candidate, John Fletcher is the candidate for the Liberal party and Brendan O’Connor will

continue his run for Labor in the seat. The candidate for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation is Daniel Connor, while Michael Virag will run for the United Australia Party, Belle Gibson for the Victorian Socialists, Tony Dobran for the Great Australian Party, Paul Lassig for the Australian Federation Party and Steven Loncar will run as an independent. Residents who are unable to get to a polling place on election day can apply for a postal vote to ensure their vote is counted. Information about early voting locations or local polling day booths can be found on the Australian Electoral College website. Details: www.aec.gov.au/election/voting. htm#start

to have the opportunity to get out and be active. “By investing in multi-purpose facilities like this fast-developing sport precinct, we’re working to make local sports more accessible, so more people can get active in nature and enjoy the parks they love,” Ms Settle said. “With local sport now back on in the park, we’re getting on with projects that deliver more opportunities for Victorians to enjoy the sports they love at quality grassroots venues like those here in Bacchus Marsh.”

The United Australia Party has stood by Hawke candidate Andrew Cuthbertson following reports he spread pro-Russian propaganda on social media. Mr Cuthbertson reportedly tweeted “several times” about false claims Russia has used to justify its invasion, which suggested the United States had biological research labs in Ukraine. On March 9, Mr Cuthbertson quote-tweeted alt-right American commentator Jack Posobiec and questioned why there were US facilities in the war-torn country. He also retweeted a video posted by the Chinese government which claims a “large quantity of dangerous viruses are stored” in the US labs. “Russia has found, during its military operations, that the US uses these facilities to conduct military plans,” the video claims. Mr Cuthbertson described his retweets as “completely innocent” and did not regret liking any tweets related to the media “bombardment” of the war, which overshadowed “hundreds of thousands of vaccine deaths”. “I stand by that,” he said. A UAP spokesperson defended Mr Cuthbertson’s social media activity and said retweeting or liking posts did not equate to supporting them. “He’s certainly not endorsing Ukraine or Russia, he wants peaceful resolution in the world full stop,” the spokesperson said.

New sports precinct gets under way Bacchus Marsh community sport is set to benefit from brand new facilities as stage two of the racecourse and recreation reserve project starts construction. The project is designed to provide the area with an active sports precinct to cater for projected growth and future sports requirements of Bacchus Marsh. The first stage of the project included the installation of a BMX track, coaches boxes, a pavilion, dressage arenas, a cross country course and more. The second stage will encompass the construction of a variety of sporting facilities including two permanent soccer pitches, a

central cricket pitch, a second pavilion and car parking. The final product will be a precinct that features four soccer pitches, two cricket fields, an AFL-size oval and four multi-purpose netball and tennis courts. The project is funded by a $4 million grant from the Victorian government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program and World Game Facilities Fund. The Moorabool council also contributed $4.8 million to the second stage of the project. Melton house prices on the rise By Olivia Condous House prices in Melton are showing no sign of slowing down as the area continues to attract keen buyers. The latest quarterly data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) revealed that the median house sale price for the area increased by 3.7 per cent in the first quarter of this year. The median price in Melton is $496,000, which is significantly more affordable than

the average metropolitan price for Melbourne of $1.12 million. Melton had a 14 per cent increase in the median house sale over the past year. Ryder Real Estate Melton managing direction Kirsteen Ryder said the area had seen price rises from week to week since last November. “There’s a lot of buyer activity, I can’t see prices falling in Melton,” Ms Ryder said. Ms Ryder said the median sale price in the area was influenced by the wide variety of

properties available, from older homes to new million-dollar houses. “There’s still potential for more growth as there’s a lot of buyer demand, we’ve got a huge market for first home buyers and investors,” she said. “We’re still seeing properties sell within 24 hours, we had one the other weekend that sold within 15 hours of being on the market.” The Melton median housing price reached a peak in the third quarter of 2021 with a large increase to $535,000, but dropped back down in the following quarter.

Despite this fluctuation, Ms Ryder was certain the Melton market was now stable. “The property market in Melton will stabilise, it definitely won’t drop.” REIV president Adam Docking said the new data showed the metropolitan housing market was stabilising but the fundamentals remained solid. “The Victorian residential market has recorded strong growth for over two years and as supply catches up with demand, we can expect to see a steadier period” Mr Docking said.

Chef brings the flavours of Hong Kong to Melton A chef is bringing a taste of Hong Kong to Melton with a Cantonese catering business she opened in the middle of the pandemic. Carmen Wong started Hou Mei Homemade with her partner Bong Lau when she needed some stability after losing her hospitality work during lockdown. But now, her new business has taken off and she’s keen to share her love of her homeland’s food with her Melton neighbours. “I want to communicate our culture to people through different events and classes, that’s what I love to do,” Ms Wong said. Ms Wong first learned to cook as a child growing up in Hong Kong, as she prepared meals for herself and her sister from the age of six while her parents were busy with work. “After school we had to cook and prepare dinner for ourselves, and go to the market to buy some fish to make something simple,” she said. Ms Wong came to Australia to study design and animation, but then moved back to

Hong Kong to work. Her passion for food never left, as she loved to teach herself cooking skills by reading cook books, and started her own small patisserie and cake business overseas. “I still really loved Melbourne, so I decided to move back here,” Ms Wong said. Four years ago, Ms Wong moved to Melton with Lau and they have been running Hou Mei Homemade together for the past two years. Their business has been supported by the City of Melton Hot House Project, which aims to help aspiring entrepreneurs learn vital business skills and develop a business model through a five-week intensive program. Hou Mei Homemade specialises in customized modern Cantonese-fusion catering for small group events,. “So I just want to deliver good quality Cantonese cuisine to people, I use some traditional cooking techniques but I also add my own creativity,” Ms Wong said. Carmen Wong is the founder and chef of Hou Mei Homemade.

The Labor party has pledged funding to go towards a new hall in Melton for the Sikh community. The Khalsa Shaouni religious organisation in Plumpton will receive $86,000 in funding for upgrades towards their community hall, if Labor wins the seat of Hawke at the upcoming election. The hall will be used as a meeting place and place of worship for the Sikh community in the area. The funding will go towards works for a new car park in order to improve access to the community hall currently under construction at the site. The funding comes after Khalsa Shaouni volunteers donated more than 120,000 meals to those in isolation and vulnerable or elderly members of the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group also provided meals and care packages for those affected by the most recent bushfires in Victoria and New South Wales.

Labor party candidate for Hawke Sam Rae said the funding was part of the party’s commitment to ensure that culturally and linguistically diverse Australians experience a better future. “Federal Labor understands that Sikh Australians play such a vital role in making Australia the most successful multicultural society in the world, and we’ve been listening to community voices to support their work,” Mr Rae said. Opposition multicultural affairs spokesperson Andrew Giles said Labor was proud to play a part in supporting a multicultural society in Melbourne. “Sam Rae and the team that Anthony Albanese leads has been listening to the local Sikh community and is committed to delivering on important infrastructure that will allow them to continue their work in community building and culture sharing.”

BEHIND THE NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Dixon goes on the cancer attack Hume City footballer Danny Dixon has made a stunning return to the soccer field just two months after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer as Max Hatzoglou reports.

T

he English born footballer felt something was not right in late January when he noticed a lump in one testicle so he got himself checked by a doctor immediately. It was a swift decision that may have saved his life. Within 15 days of the initial check up, Dixon went under a surgeon’s knife and had a cancerous growth removed which led to chemotherapy and ultimately a full recovery that has put his life ‘back to normal’. Dixon made a triumphant return to the soccer field on March 29 and has since played four consecutive games for Hume. In 2021, 980 men were diagnosed with testicular cancer in Australia according to the federal government. Of those, 33 died of the disease. Sufferers have a 97 per cent chance of surviving at least five years, with testicular cancer accounting for just 1 per cent of male deaths from cancer in 2021. As one of the lucky ones who beat the disease, Dixon said he was grateful that his return to health has also allowed him to return to the game he loves. “It’s been good since I’ve had the all clear, it’s been hard trying to get fit and obviously getting back in the team, but everyone has been really good,” he said. “I always said to myself ever since I found out that I needed the chemo and I had surgery and stuff, I always said to myself after round six I will be back playing. “I think that was something that helped me as well because I set myself a goal from day one and I was back round seven so I got there. “But ever since day one, never once did I think I wouldn’t play again. I always had it in

my head that I would play again, there were no ifs and buts about it.” Dixon arrived in Perth as a 14-year-old with his family from Middlesbrough in England and later moved to Melbourne where he began

his career in the National Premier League Victorian competition. Dixon, who bagan playing with Hume in 2019, said he was grateful for all the support he received from the football and wider

community, which he says has helped him get through the challenges and understand his circumstances better. “The whole situation was good, obviously, it’s not what you want to hear at 27 but at the same time from the nurses, the doctors, everyone involved in football, everyone who I have spoken to has been amazing,” Dixon said. “So it’s been good. It hasn’t been too hard mentally when you’ve got the support around you that everyone has given me, so it’s been really good in that way.” Dixon drew particular strength from the support of Tracy Tombides, the mother of Australian footballer Dylan Tombides who passed away in 2014, nearly three years after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Tombides progressed his career to represent West Ham in the popular English Premier League and was renowned among Australian soccer fans. “Speaking to Dylan’s mum Tracy during the chemo process, obviously she’s helped me through what Dylan went through,” Dixon said. “Speaking to people who have been close to someone who’s had it, unfortunately for Dylan it didn’t work out, but to know people are thinking of you or trying to help you in any way possible, it makes a big difference. “And obviously, my family has been amazing. “They’re over in Perth, but still the support you get from them and from Hume, from everyone, it did help a lot. “People think like they’re just messaging you and saying hope you’re doing well and stuff, but it does help a lot.“

Pricing under the pump By Benjamin Millar

Pricing under the pump Melton’s petrol prices are coming under greater scrutiny with a local MP vowing to help take action to bring prices in line with neighbouring areas. Melton MP Steve McGhie said the area’s families are being unfairly hit with higher prices than people in neighbouring suburbs, often paying more than 20 cents per litre extra at the pump and spending at least $10 more every time they fill up. “I have had many constituents raise concerns regarding the prices of petrol in Melton being noticeably higher than in other areas,” Mr McGhie said. “I am deeply concerned that families in Melton are paying more than they should be.”

‘‘

strongly encourage residents to complain to the ACCC

’’

- Steve McGhie

Mr McGhie said he has taken the issue up with the Consumer Affairs Minister Melissa Horne and will be contacting federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor to discuss this issue soon, as fuel prices are regulated by the federal government. “In the interim I strongly encourage residents to complain to the ACCC [Australian Competition and Consumer Commission]” he said. The ACCC’s latest petrol monitoring report showed that average petrol prices rose in the 2020 September quarter after a record low earlier in the year. Although the ACCC does not set fuel prices, it does monitor retail fuel prices on a daily basis. A spokesperson said it has the power to investigate where it sees issues of concern. “Where we find sufficient evidence we will take action to protect consumers against misleading and anti-competitive conduct by fuel retailers.” Mr McGhie’s promise to take action was widely welcomed on social media, where some residents said they had seen price differences of up to 50 cents per litre between Melton and Watergardens.

Melton’s Andre Peters said the lack of independent competition makes it easier for the major fuel companies to keep prices inflated well above those in neighbouring suburbs. “Sadly there is no competition in Melton as there are no independents,” he said. “Generally we pay at least 20 cents a litre more at times in Melton.” A BP spokesman said petrol prices at the pump can be impacted by a number of different factors.

He said while there are currently about 1400 BP branded sites across Australia, about three quarters are owned by independent business partners who set their own retail pricing. “When it comes to retail fuel pricing, our aim is to be competitive and attract customers to our sites,” he said. “Generally speaking, the price at the pump is impacted by a number of different factors. In particular, international product prices and competition between service stations in a local

area. There are also other factors including exchange rates, taxes and local operating costs.” On Monday, unleaded 91 pump prices at Melton’s BP, Coles Express and 7/11 Mobil were all at 155.9 cents per litre, according to price comparison website Petrol Spy, with Woolworths Caltex at 168.9. Meanwhile Bacchus Marsh BP, Coles Express and 7/11 Mobil prices were 129.9 cents per litre – 26 cents less per litre – and independent outlets were just 119.9 cents per litre. 628174

‘‘ Dixon in partnership with the DT38 Foundation and Professional Footballers Australia hosted an exhibition match on April 3, featuring famous footballers to raise funds to educate men on the the importance of self-checking for lumps and other anomalies and acting swiftly. The day was a great success with popular football figures on-field alongside Dixon including Thomas Sorensen, Fahid Ben-Kalfallah, Rashid Mahazi, Jai Ingham, Rodrigo Vargas, Michael Zappone, Vince Lia, Alan Davidson, and other NPL and A-League names playing in the friendly match. “The day was really good, we orgainised it in pretty quick time,” Dixon explained. “It was mainly Hegs [Nick Hegarty] that orgainised the whole thing for me really because I was going through the chemo at the time so Hegs and a few of the boys, Hayden Tennant and Mark Ochieng, organised loads and they were amazing. “It ran so smoothly and everyone involved with the game had a good time, had a good laugh, and really enjoyed themselves. “The most important part was we raised a lot of money for the foundation and we also got a lot of awareness out there for people. “The whole day was such a big success and it was really good.” From 100 donations so far, $13,735 has been raised on the gofundme page to support the DT38 Foundation. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE What’s your connection to Melton and Moorabool? My family and I moved to Melton in 1990 when my husband started working with the Australian Wool Corporation. At that time it was our best option to travel to either Benalla or Horsham where our families were. Everyone made us feel very welcome. We didn’t want to move into Melbourne and Melton had a good country feel about it. It was close enough to the city to go to the theatre, events, the zoo and everything we needed as young family. In 2005, we moved to Bacchus Marsh as our daughters had horses and we needed a bigger property. We have now been here 17 years and it was perfect for what we wanted to do. We are still very connected with Melton and have our family business there. How did you get involved with the Zonta Club of Melton? It was late 1996 when I was approached to be part of a new club in Melton. It was for women and it was a community service club. As I already had an association with Rotary I knew it was meant to be. In May 1997, the Zonta Club of Melton was chartered and I was the first president. Here we are now, 25 years on, and I am still involved and going to take on the presidents role again for the next two years.

12544962-AV15-22

What is your favourite part of being involved in the club? Being involved in a local but also international organisation that helps women on so many different levels through education, health, legal and advocacy brings me lots of joy and knowing that we can help women and their families is so rewarding. I have made many friends and

10 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 3 May, 2022

have travelled to many places to help women, attending conferences and workshops. Since we started, so many things have changed for women of all ages and helping where we can is important to all our members. Why is the work of empowering women important to you? To share knowledge, skills and help women who can then take these skills and knowledge on to help others. As an example some years ago, I took part in helping out a village in Tonga. On one trip we donated fabric and sewing machines. I taught the local women how to sew and they continued on in making school uniforms for the village children. Zonta has been celebrating International Women’s Day every year since we started. Our aim is to bring well known speakers to Melton so that women could enjoy a night out and be inspired by amazing women. Zonta introduced an award called “Woman of Note”, this has been awarded to a local woman each year in recognition of the work they have done in helping other women and children and their community. We are always looking for new members, three new members will be inducted at the 25th year celebrations on the May 7. Our guest speaker Val Sarah AM (Zonta Club of Ballarat) was our first guest speaker and will join us again at this celebration. She has also been a Zonta International president. Empowering women is so important to all our members. Anyone interested in what we do is most welcome to come along to our dinner meetings which are held on the first Monday of each month (except for November). Details: www.zontaclubofmelton.org.au/

(Damjan Janevski) 277834_06

The Zonta Club of Melton will celebrate it’s 25th anniversary on May 7. Bianca Heaney was the first president of the club and she is about to step into the role again. She spoke with reporter Olivia Condous about the work of Zonta Clubs.

GMCT asks for community input on new cemetary The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) is a community focused organisation that operates 19 cemeteries and memorial parks in metropolitan Melbourne. GMCT has been working to develop a master plan for the new site at Harkness in the City of Melton. In addition to a public cemetery, the master plan considers a range of uses for the site as it transitions to meet Victorians’ burial and cremation. From November, 2021, to mid-March, 2022, GMCT sought feedback from Traditional Owners, the community, and key stakeholders about the proposed new public cemetery and multi-use community space at Harkness. GMCT reached over 25,000 people over this period, gathering ideas to help shape the master plan, which is expected to be completed in draft form by the end of May. “I would like to thank all the community members who have participated in the consultation activities over the past three months,” says James Reid, chief future built environment officer. “We have gained great insights and together we have worked towards ‘reimagining’ the public cemetery.” GMCT will hold two community pop-ups to showcase the draft master plan for the first time. To be one of the first to see the designs and talk with the GMCT team, you can visit the following locations: ■ Caroline Springs Library and Learning Hub on Wednesday, May 4, 10.30am-2.30pm ■ Arnolds Creek Recreation Reserve car park (19 Claret Ash Boulevard, Harkness) on Thursday, May 5, 8-10:30am GMCT looks forward to talking in person with the local community and hearing its thoughts on the draft master plan. If you wish to attend the pop up but cannot make it, or to find out more about the project, visit www.yoursay.gmct.com.au/harkness.

Residents of the region are invited to provide their input for the new cemetary development at Harkness.

MOTOR STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Go cross country with Volvo By Chris Riley, Marque Motoring I have fond memories of Volvo’s XC70. Designed along the same lines as the Subaru Outback, Passat Alltrack and Audi Allroad, the XC70 went missing in 2016, a victim of the SUV revolution. But small practical wagons still enjoy a loyal, if modest, following and the spirit of XC lives on in the V60 and V90 Cross Country. And we’re glad to say the V60 Cross Country is offered here.

Styling There’s just the one model, priced from $64,990. It’s available in a choice of 10 colours, with Denim blue and Pine grey available at no extra cost. The Cross Country makeover adds a different radiator grille, grey plastic cladding, aluminium roof rails and a differently designed wheel, along with a wider track and more ground clearance. It’s powered by a 2.0 Litre mild hybrid four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, with an eight-speed auto and all-wheel drive. Our test vehicle was optioned with Lifestyle Pack: Panoramic Sunroof, Tinted Rear Windows, Bowers and Wilkins Premium Sound ($5700), Perforated Nappa Leather Accented Charcoal/Charcoal Interior ($3000); Advanced Air Cleaner ($500) and Metallic Paint (no cost option). They take the price to $74,190 plus on-road costs. Standard kit includes 19-inch alloys, four-zone climate air, with humidity sensor and CleanZone air quality system, plus Driftwood decor inlays and leather accent upholstery, heated front seats, power adjust driver and passenger seat with memory, four-way lumbar support and power cushion extension and power foldable rear backrest. There’s also keyless entry and start, automatic lights, wipers, dimming interior mirror, 360-degree camera, self-parking, head-up display, front and rear park sensors, active bending LED headlights with high pressure cleaning; and hands-free tailgate opening.

Infotainment Infotainment consists of 10-speaker ‘High Performance’ audio, 9.0-inch vertical touchscreen, Bluetooth (including audio streaming), DAB digital radio, Apple CarPlay 18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 3 May, 2022

and Android Auto Android, wireless device charging and two USB ports. There’s satellite navigation with road sign recognition. There’s a large, physical volume control knob, but most features are adjusted with a prod or swipe of the screen.

Engines / transmissions If the V60 has a B5 on the back that means it’s a mild hybrid, a B6 means it’s also a hybrid (but a more powerful one) and Recharge means it’s either fully electric or a plug-in hybrid). Our Cross Country B5 on review is powered by a 2.0-litre mild hybrid with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a small 10kW electric motor. The combination kicks out a handy 183kW of power and 350Nm of torque, with power to all-four wheels via an eight-speed automatic.

Safety Safety extends to dual front, side and curtain airbags. There is Autonomous emergency braking (City, Interurban & Vulnerable Road User) as well as lane keep assist with lane departure warning. Adaptive cruise control including Pilot Assist, Driver Alert; Lane Keeping Aid; Adjustable Speed Limiter function; Oncoming Lane Mitigation; Blind Spot Information with Cross Traffic Alert Front and Rear Collision Warning with mitigation support; Run-off road Mitigation; Hill start assist; Hill Descent Control. Pilot Assist system supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130km/h.

Driving Dynamic, Eco, Comfort and Off-Road modes are accessed via the touchscreen. The dash to 100km/h takes 6.9 seconds and it has a top speed of 180km/h. Fuel consumption is a claimed 7.4L/100km (we were getting 8.0L/100km after close to 600km). At 1499mm the wagon sits 67mm higher than a standard V60 and at 197mm has 55mm more clearance between the lowest point and the ground. It can drive safely through water to a depth of 300mm. Hill descent control and an ’off-road’ drive mode have also been added. In Off Road mode, steering is light and all-wheel drive and hill descent control are

AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE Volvo V60 Cross Country B5 AWD, $64,990 SPECIFICATIONS Volvo V60 B5 Cross Country, 2.0L four-cylinder petrol turbo, 48-volt mild hybrid, 8sp automatic, AWD

activated. But it can only be activated at low speeds and the speedometer shows the range available. Start-stop is deactivated. In Off Road mode the driver info display changes to a compass between the speedometer and tachometer. It’s all very impressive, but a bit meaningless because no one in their right mind is going to take a car like this off road. To the beach yes, down to the snow probably and up to the farm maybe -- but off road? I mean, who wants to scratch the paint or damage the wheels of their nice new car. The styling is attractive and bang on for the times, with an inside that matches, finished in Nappa charcoal leather and shades of grey, with grey coloured wood inlays and some stainless steel trim pieces. Interestingly (at least I find it interesting), the

tailgate does not boast that it’s a hybrid and one gets the feeling the wheel has turned, and it is more about performance than economy. V60 Cross Country goes pretty well too, with punchy acceleration, reassuring braking and the ability to thread corners flat and at a reasonable rate of knots. There’s no gear change paddles but you can use the shifter to change gears -- left to change down, right to change up. Punt it hard and the engine develops a dry, audible rasp, but not an unwelcome one. Leave the transmission to its own devices and it has a habit of changing down unexpectedly, on hills particularly. Ride quality is firm, but not what we’d describe as crash bang uncomfortable and it’s nice and quiet inside (music to the ears of this deaf head). The brakes are excellent too, but have a tendency to pull the car up with a jerk -- a lot. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but even Eco mode proved impressive. Although it dulls the throttle, with 90km left to go on the computer we switched to Eco mode and it pushed this figure as high as 180km on the motorway before it finally turned south. The infotainment system in this model is a step behind the Google transformation that has taken place with the release of XC40 and XC60. On the plus side, however, it sees the return of iPhone support - and speed camera warnings -- yay! The Lifestyle pack is worth considering because it brings a huge sunroof and the fantastic Bowers & Wilkins audio system. Most people spend most of their listening time in the car, so it’s worth the investment -trust me you can tell the difference. With 15 speakers and 1100 watts of power it includes metal speaker grilles as well as a cute dash top tweeter. Four room modes including ’Concert hall’ and ’Jazz club’ allow you to recreate the acoustics of a specific room inside the car. Servicing is every 15,000km or 12 months and two pre-paid service plans are available: three years/45,000km for $1500 or five years/75,000km for $2500.

Summing up I like the idea of this car. It looks cool and is a punchy performer. It mightn’t meet off-road expectations, but it certainly won’t disappoint the rest of the time.

New look Sharks are starting to build mometum Hillside coach Charlie Denaro believes his team can match it against any team in the Essendon District Football League division 1 competition, but admits time is needed for his new list to build chemistry. The club has brought in a stack of new players this season with Denaro revealing just seven players from last season played in the club’s round one team. Denaro, who has been coach of the Sharks since 2020, said the new players have been exciting for the club. “We have had a massive change of our list, which has been really exciting for the club,” Denaro said. “And the players that we brought into the club, guys like Lucas Failli, Carlo Riccardi, Bailey Kirkman, Cassius White, Joshua Covelli, of course, and there’s others that I’m gonna miss.

Hillside’s Jackson Volpato shows some dash against Tullamarine. (Joe Mastroianni)

“We’ve brought a lot of really good footballers into the club, but equally important there’s been probably another 20 that have come along. “We are definitely in a far better position now than what we were last year.” Denaro believes his side can challenge the

best in the competition. “We think we’re going to be pretty competitive to be honest,” he said. “We think we can match it against any team and so far, obviously Roxburgh Park and Tullamarine got the better of us but we’ve got a lot of improvement.” The Sharks have won one game from their first three games this season. Denaro said his team is improving weekly and that strong in-roads are being made in parts of their game with contested footy the area needed for improving. “By the time we get to the middle of the year, we would like to see that we’re going to be right in the mix and hopefully we grab that last or second last spot in the top four,” he said. Denaro said time was required for his team to gel together. “Because we are such a new list, it’s gonna

take us quite a few games before our boys get used to playing with each other,” he said. “We had eight players in round one that played at the club last year, that’s a massive turn over so we’re going to get better as we go. Speaking about their injured star player Joshua Covelli, who kicked seven goals in round one for a best on ground performance, Denaro hinted that he could be back earlier than expected. “Of course getting Joshua Covelli up and running, I think a lot of people think it’s a season ending injury… the only thing I will say is you will see Josh play sooner rather than later,” he said. Hillside played fourth placed Rupertswood in their round four clash. Results: https://meltonmoorabool. starweekly.com.au/sport/ Max Hatzoglou

Phoenix are flying high By Max Hatzoglou Melton Phoenix coach Darren Traynor says a buy-in from the players and enjoyment of the game has been the key to their success this season which has them sitting on top of the Men’s State League 5 west ladder. “Just the buy-in from the players, I’ve got a young squad and the buy-in has been really good, really pleasing thus far,” Traynor said. “It’s been a fairly consistent start which is what we’ve been aiming for.” The Phoenix have recorded wins in all but one of their first six matches of the season which Traynor has put down to the culture the players have led. “The culture’s been good, they’re driving a lot of it,” he said. “It’s been a pleasure to really coach this team to be perfectly honest with you, they’re driving it, they’re setting the standards, I’m just happy to be part of it at the moment.” Traynor took over as coach in 2020 during COVID after coaching stints at Sunshine George Cross National Premier League youth teams.

Speaking about the difference from last season to now, he put it down to the new personnel which he has come in, many who had previously played under him at George Cross. “It’s a new team basically, apart from three existing players there from last year, the rest are new, it’s a new team full of youth, it’s fairly young,” he said. “I really just put it down to the change in clientele, going with younger players who are all similar in age and they just enjoy each other’s company, not that there was anything wrong with the squad I had previously. “It’s just a different age demographic and they’re enjoying one another’s company on and off the pitch.” It hasn’t all been smooth sailing for the club however, as challenges presented at the very beginning of the season with finding players. “It was challenging probably the first three weeks of the preseason, it was a little bit of a concern but all be it even if I didn’t get the players that I got, I still would’ve tried to play some form of decent football with the squad I would’ve formed,” Traynor said.

“[I was] always going to be organising and trying to play a decent brand of football regardless of the calibre of players I had, but I always felt that I always had the support of the club no matter what. “The club is well run by our president Michelle Williamson, from Michelle down there’s a lot of support. “We’ve got brand new clubrooms, they’ve come up a treat, we’ve been in them since round one and they’ve been superb. “We’ve got a really good backing at the club, a really good support base, ex-players and members come down and Melton’s got a really good following to be honest, even when we are on the road we always seem to get good support so there’s really nice people around. “All that has helped to get to where we are today.” Traynor’s next step is to try and get the club promoted. “To be honest my goal has always been to try and compete for promotion and try and get the club up to state league four because it’s got the facilities there, the infrastructures great, it’s a well run club.”

Western United will look to jump Melbourne City on top of the A-League ladder to win its first minor premiership in its remaining three matches of the season. Coach John Aloisi revealed the club would likely be without star midfielder Alessandro Diamanti in its aspirations this season as he deals with an injury to his right knee. “It’s gonna be touch and go for him to get back,” Aloisi said. United’s remaining three games will occur over an eight-day period from Saturday, April 30 to Sunday, May 8 featuring the Central Coast Mariners, Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United all away from home. United currently sits second on the ladder, two points behind City with a game in hand. Three wins would secure the minor premiership for United, while a few losses could put them below Melbourne Victory, who are two points below United in third position. Aloisi said that he hasn’t discussed the prospect of a minor premiership with the group, as he elects to keep his focus on their next game before thinking too far ahead. The former Socceroo also said his players are prepared for the workload of three matches in eight-days following a 10-day break. “It’s been something that we’ve prepared all season for because we’ve had to deal with it all season when we’ve had those short turnarounds and certain amount of games in a short period. “Some players can deal with it better than other players and back it up quickly and we had the luxury of taking players off against Perth. “Whether it’s going to be the same this week, I don’t know because you don’t know how the games will go but we’ve trained really well and we’ve been able to give the boys some good recovery but also some hard sessions so they will be ready to go.” United played the Mariners on Saturday and face Newcastle on Wednesday.
