Pokies spend tops $15m Brimbank. Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said it was “very concerning and disappointing” that Brimbank recorded the highest EGM expenditure in the state in March. “Brimbank is heavily impacted by gambling harm and we continue to have the highest daily losses of any Victorian local government area for the past decade,” she said. “This is the first time we have seen more than $15 million lost in a single month, and this is disheartening news for the Brimbank community. Monash University school of public health and preventive medicine associate professor Charles Livingstone said pokie spending had
increased across the country following the pandemic lockdowns. “This can be attributed to people having some money saved and wanting to get out,” Dr Livingstone said. “Pokie gambling can be associated with social and economic stress and many people are experiencing considerable stress at the moment, with insecure work, declining real wages, and intermittent COVID spikes, etc. “Pokies are also distributed very disproportionately in disadvantaged communities, which are experiencing the worst of these stresses, so increased spending is understandable, if worrying.” Cr Nguyen said the latest VGCCC data

Gamblers have poured more than $15 million into poker machines in Brimbank in a single month for the first time, new data reveals. According to Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) data, $15.25 million was spent on electronic gaming machines (EGM) in Brimbank in March. The spending was the highest in the state, with gamblers spending $2 million more in Brimbank than in Casey, which recorded the state’s second highest EGM expenditure. The March data for Brimbank is also more than $2 million higher than the amount spend on poker machines in the city in February. In the first nine months of 2021-22, gamblers have spent more than $83.5 million at EGMs in

Speeding tops list of offences By Matthew Sims Speeding topped the list of driving offences in the Brimbank police service area during a road safety blitz over the Easter and Anzac Day period. Victoria Police data provided to Star Weekly reveals there were 195 driving offences recorded on Brimbank roads during the road safety operation, known as Operation Compass, which saw police out and about from Thursday, April 14 until Monday, April 25.
According to Victoria Police, recorded driving offences in the Brimbank police service area included 54 speeding offences, nine drink drivers and seven drug drivers. Eighteen disqualified drivers also came to the attention of police during the operation, while police also uncovered 17 unlicensed drivers. Police also detected 15 seatbelt offences and 15 mobile phone offences during the blitz. Victoria Police acting assistant commissioner of road policing David Clayton it was “disappointing” that police detected
12,791 offences as part of the operation across Victoria. “That’s almost 13,000 instances of people making poor decisions and putting themselves and others at risk on the road,” he said. “Tragically five lives were lost during Easter – four of them pedestrians struck by vehicles. “With worsening weather conditions and reduced visibility as winter approaches, it is imperative motorists and pedestrians look out for one another.” According to Victoria Police, speeding offences accounted for almost 40 per cent of
the recorded offences across the state, with 4966 speeding offences recorded. Police said 579 motorists across the state were caught driving at more than 25km/h over the speed limit. Police also conducted more than 182,000 roadside alcohol and drug tests, with 855 motorists issued with drink or drug driving offences statewide. There were 453 drivers nabbed for driving while disqualified or suspended and 464 for driving while unlicenced. A total of 1360 unregistered vehicles were detected.

Cross cultural comedy hits the stage A new cross cultural rom-com stage show is hitting the stage in St Albans later this month. ‘Dear Mama, There’s Something Maybe I Should Tell You …’ tells the story of a Taiwanese immigrant named Li-Ting who leaves the familiarity of her hometown to follow her heart and her dreams in Melbourne. There she finds herself trying to balance her new life and a different culture with her own Taiwanese heritage. The story is semi-autobiographical, based on writer Lansy Feng’s own experiences when she came to Australia almost 10 years ago. “[Li-Ting’s] from a very conservative
country, a strict family. Her parents are just very traditional Asian, typical type of parents that are very strict with all the rules and stuff,” Feng said. “So she has been wanting to get out of there, so she lied to her mom and escaped and jumped on a plane and flew to Melbourne to meet this guy that she met online and also to chase her music dream. “My story is slightly different. I did run away from home and my parents didn’t know, I told them I’m going to school in the south of Taiwan for two weeks. Then I flew to Australia to meet this friend I had met before … so I flew all the
way here just to see her.” While Feng returned to Taiwan after the two weeks was up, she managed to return to Australia a year later where she’s lived ever since. The show will be performed in three languages, English, French and Mandarin, and will feature original songs. ‘Dear Mama’ is at The Bowery Theatre on Friday, May 20. Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 32-year-old Deer Park man with an alleged string of scam offences involving more than 100 victims. Police alleged the scams occurred between April, 2018, and September, 2021, and involved puppy scams, false advertising on online marketplaces and claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office or a mobile phone company. Police arrested and charged the Deer Park man with obtaining property by deception, possessing proceeds of crime and using fraudulent document sovernight on Wednesday, April 27. Police have alleged the scams involved 109 victims who lost $295,705 in total, with the man allegedly using stolen identities to obtain bank accounts and requesting the victims transfer money into these bank accounts. In a Victoria Police statement, a police spokesperson said that the case should serve as a reminder to hang up on calls where someone is claiming to be from a mobile phone company and call back the company on their publicly listed phone number. “It comes as a reminder for people to delay any purchases until you can see the item, or animal such as a dog, in-person,” the spokesperson said. “If you receive a phone call requesting personal information or payment from a person representing themselves as a government agency, do not respond to the request and hang up. “Call the agency back through a publicly listed phone number.” Anyone with any information relating to the scam is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sunshine hub a council priority Brimbank council has named the development of the Sunshine Super Hub, upgrades to the Albion train station and improvements for the Calder Freeway among a list of updated priorities for seeking funding for transport improvements across the region. Council adopted its 2022 updated version of the Transport Priorities Paper at its April 19 meeting, which would inform how it would seek funding from the state and federal governments, after first adopting the paper in 2013. Updated priorities outlined in the update included delivering the Sunshine Super Hub, upgrading Albion train statio, boosting local benefits from the Melbourne Airport Rail,
future train stations at Calder Park, Keilor Park and Sunshine North, delivering upgrades to the Calder Freeway to boost safety and reduce congestion, providing more infrastructure for the charging of electric vehicles, and exploring opportunities for light rail and other transit technologies. Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the priorities would enable the council to respond to the ever-changing transport needs of the community. “Good transport design plays a really important role in making our community a better place to live, play and work,” Cr Nguyen said. “As we move into the recovery phase of the
COVID-19 pandemic, investment in transport infrastructure represents a significant opportunity for economic growth, to address climate change and improve the social and economic opportunities for our community.” The council also outlined that the paper would support the strategic outcomes outlined in the latest Council Plan, as well as the Climate Emergency Plan and the Sunshine Priority Precinct Vision 2050 report. The paper also included a number of other transport funding goals for the region, including the removal of seven level crossings and upgrades to the Sunbury train line.

Doctor an award finalist A Hillside man has been announced as a finalist for the 2022 Victorian 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards, for his contribution to helping young people reach their education goals and developing more support for aspiring medical professionals. Dr Victor Lin, who grew up in Hillside, works as a doctor at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and is a finalist for the Saward Dawson Community Service and Social Impact Award. He is the co-founder of two successful not-for-profit organisations, the Young Australians’ Cancer Initiative (YACI) and Teaching For Impact (TFI). Dr Lin founded these organisations to empower high school students to get involved in the fight against cancer and encourage young people to make sustainably-minded contributions to their communities.
“I come from a single-parent, immigrant family, and going through school did come with its challenges,” Dr Lin said. “As someone who has been there and had those experiences myself, I thought that I could really help, as I shared some of the frustrations of students who have all these dreams and ambitions but might not have access to a lot of the resources, the mentorship and the connections,” he said. Dr Lin encouraged students with high career hopes to not limit themselves due to past academic performance. ‘You often come across a student who really wants to do medicine, or become a business leader or become a lawyer, but they often cut themselves short in terms of thinking that they need to be a certain sort of student. The core message would be, don’t be defined by that.”

Airport plan ‘misses’ the mark By Elsie Lange The state government has released its response to a report on safeguarding Melbourne airport and surrounding areas, but locals say it “misses the point”. Last month, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) published its take on a report by the Melbourne Airport Environs Safeguarding Standing Advisory Committee (MAESSAC) – a group appointed by the government to provide planning advice. Handed down in November, 2021, the report raised key issues including the implementation of the National Airports Safeguarding Framework (NASF), the role of number above
contours (N contours) and planning responses for dealing with concerns beyond aircraft noise. N-above contours indicate the number of noise events exceeding a certain level – a N70 contour shows the noise level of events above 70 decibels. DELWP has now responded to MAESSAC’s 15 recommendations to address those issues, and the only recommendation it did not support in full, part or principle, was to make Melbourne Airport a determining referral authority or recommending referral authority. That means the airport would still have to submit planning objections to local councils. Melbourne Airport Community Action Group (MACAG) said MAESSAC did not have
the scope to tackle locals’ concerns, which is reflected in the report. “We understand the [MAESSAC] panel were restricted by the terms of reference, and appreciate that those terms were drafted by people who were mostly in the dark about the true scale of the impact of Melbourne Airport,” MACAG spokesperson Dr Hannah Robertson said. A Melbourne Airport spokesperson said it welcomed the MAESSAC’s report and the government’s response. “As a key enabler of billions of dollars’ worth of economic activity, it is critical that Melbourne Airport be protected from development that could impact its 24-hour operation, but equally
that future residents be protected by ensuring inappropriate development does not occur in areas that are known to experience significant aircraft noise,” the spokesperson said. The airport spokesperson said the airport was being transparent about the community impacts of the third runway plan, and the “health and social effects are discussed in detail in the preliminary draft Major Development Plan”. The debate around the construction of Melbourne Airport’s third runway has been ongoing, with residents in Keilor and Hume worried about the noise impacts of the runway if it runs in the north-south direction, as opposed to east-west.
Join up and have a yarn Brimbank crochet enthusiasts are encouraged to get their hooks and needles ready, as a new yarn club is preparing to welcome participants. The Friends of Cruickshank Park initiative will be known as ‘The Yarn Club’ and will be welcome to people from all ages. Club member Lola Anderson led the first official project for the club, which saw the club install an Anzac Day wreath at Cruickshank Park, complete with red and purple crochet poppies to remember Australian and New Zealand human and animal casualties. The project saw a collaboration between the club and the children from the Clare Court Early Learning Centre in Yarraville, as the base of the wreath was repurposed from bird nests the children create from collected sticks. Friends of Cruickshank Park member Dave
Lewis said the club aims to enable people to develop their crochet skills or learn a new hobby. “The benefits of the yarn club are an increase in social interaction for those that feel isolated, as well as connect younger and older community members in friendships,” he said. “Through activities such as ‘yarn bombing’, the yarn club will also raise awareness of different causes and events such as the Blue Tree Project for mental health and the pink trees promoting breast cancer awareness.” Mr Lewis said the club has applied for some funding to allow for seating. Paint, fluorescent lights and batteries will not be accepted. Albion resident Julia, who lives with her partner and two cats, said she wants to get rid of toxic chemicals such as weed killer, engine oil and old flea bombs. “I did a bit of cleaning up during lockdown and discovered things in the laundry and shed that I definitely needed to get rid of,” she said. “I knew it couldn’t go in the regular garbage or down the drain, but when I wasn’t leaving my five kilometre radius I couldn’t do anything about it. “When I saw that the detox your home event was coming up, I put it straight in the diary.” The maximum weight for a single container is 20 kilograms or 20 litres. Residents are advised to drop-off the chemicals in their original containers or disposable packaging with the contains clearly labelled or labelled as ‘unknown’.
Briefs Murder charge A homeless man has been charged with murder following the death of a Brooklyn man on Wednesday, April 27. Police arrested the 45-year-old man, who had no fixed address, in Seddon. The charge followed on from an incident last Wednesday, in which a 60-year-old Brooklyn man was located deceased inside a Primula Avenue address just after 3.30am.

A 16-year-old St Albans boy has been charged with aggravated affray following the death of a man in the Adelaide CBD on Monday, April 25. Police were called to North Terrace, Adelaide, about 2am, where officers found a man lying on the road. It is alleged the man, a 25-year-old from Richmond, Victoria, had multiple stab wounds to his chest. Police said he died at the scene. The St Albans teen was one of four people arrested at Adelaide Airport last Monday over the incident. A 17-year-old boy from Meadow Heights has been charged with murder, aggravated affray and travelling under a false name. He did not apply for bail.

Council calls for ‘urgent update’ By Matthew Sims Brimbank council has called for an update from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) on the Kealba landfill and AkzoNobel North Sunshine developments. Councillor Virginia Tachos passed a notice of motion at the council meeting on Tuesday, April 19, calling on council to write to EPA chief executive Lee Miezis to request an urgent update on compliance and enforcement activity by the EPA regarding the Barro Group’s Kealba landfill and AkzoNobel North Sunshine and request that the EPA resume meaningful dialogue with the local communities and provide an update to the
impacted communities. Cr Tachos also asked council to provide copy of the correspondence to the Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio, Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins and St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman. According to the motion, the update should include the progress on resolving the ongoing issues of concern, the timeframes for the resolution of these issues, the reasons for current compliance strategies and engagement activities with the impacted communities. Cr Tachos said the two EPA licenced sites continued to cause “considerable distress” to the local communities. “Local communities have been promised
strong and swift action by the EPA to resolve these issues,” she said. “Local communities have been promised that the EPA is doing everything it can to resolve the issues, but to date, despite all these promises, the EPA is nowhere to be found. “Local communities have been let down by the EPA again.” EPA regional manager western metropolitan Steve Lansdell said that the EPA would be continuing “strong regulatory action” regarding the Kealba landfill and AkzoNobel paint and resin manufacturing plant issues. “EPA acknowledges the concerns and impacts both issues have had on the local community for too long, and these continue
to be considered with all compliance and enforcement actions taken,” he said. “While each site and issue is different, EPA has taken a consistent approach that includes escalating enforcement action that has included official warnings, fines and in the case of Barro Group – suspending their operating licence.” Mr Lansdell said residents can attend a community information session on Tuesday, May 3, 3-6pm at St Albans Community Centre. The EPA has given Barro Group until August 22 to complete remedial work at the Kealba site, after suspending Barro Group’s licence to operate the landfill in September, 2021, due to ongoing hotspot and odour issues.
Panel role for mayor Local Government Minister Shaun Leane has selected the 2022 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel, with Brimbank council mayor Jasmine Nguyen appointed as a panel member. The main roles of the panel would be to deliver high-level advice on legislative, regulatory, strategic policy issues affecting councils across Victoria. Cr Nguyen said she was looking forward to working with other mayors who are driven towards building strong communities. “As a young person of colour and Brimbank council’s first Vietnamese-Australian mayor, I want to be a role model for future generations,” she said. “Through my leadership I aim to demonstrate what can be achieved with a willingness to have a go, take every opportunity as a learning opportunity and collaborate with others.”
The other members of the 2022 panel are: • Sally Capp, Lord mayor of Melbourne; • Cr Anthony Tran, mayor of Maribyrnong; • Cr Jane Addis, mayor of Boroondara; • Cr Samantha Byrne, mayor of Moonee Valley; • Cr Frances Eyre, mayor of Nillumbik Shire; • Cr Robyn Gulline, mayor of Horsham; • Cr Kellie O’Callaghan, mayor of Latrobe; • Cr Michael Whelan, mayor of Bass Coast Shire; and • Cr Tony Driscoll, mayor of Northern Grampians Shire. Mr Leane would chair the panel, which would also focus on strengthening relationships with First Nations Victorians, COVID-19 recovery and gender equality. The panel has four meetings scheduled throughout the year, with the first meeting held on Wednesday, April 27.

Dixon goes on the cancer attack Hume City footballer Danny Dixon has made a stunning return to the soccer field just two months after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer as Max Hatzoglou reports.
T
he English born footballer felt something was not right in late January when he noticed a lump in one testicle so he got himself checked by a doctor immediately. It was a swift decision that may have saved his life. Within 15 days of the initial check up, Dixon went under a surgeon’s knife and had a cancerous growth removed which led to chemotherapy and ultimately a full recovery that has put his life ‘back to normal’. Dixon made a triumphant return to the soccer field on March 29 and has since played four consecutive games for Hume. In 2021, 980 men were diagnosed with testicular cancer in Australia, according to the federal government. Of those, 33 died of the disease. Sufferers have a 97 per cent chance of surviving at least five years, with testicular cancer accounting for just 1 per cent of male deaths from cancer in 2021. As one of the lucky ones who beat the disease, Dixon said he was grateful that his return to health has also allowed him to return to the game he loves. “It’s been good since I’ve had the all clear, it’s been hard trying to get fit and obviously getting back in the team, but everyone has been really good,” he said. “I always said to myself ever since I found out that I needed the chemo and I had surgery and stuff, I always said to myself after round six I will be back playing. “I think that was something that helped me as well because I set myself a goal from day one and I was back round seven so I got there. “But ever since day one, never once did I think I wouldn’t play again. I always had it in

my head that I would play again, there were no ifs and buts about it.” Dixon arrived in Perth as a 14-year-old with his family from Middlesbrough in England and later moved to Melbourne where he began
his career in the National Premier League Victorian competition. Dixon, who began playing with Hume in 2019, said he was grateful for all the support he received from the football and wider
community, which he says has helped him get through the challenges and understand his circumstances better. “The whole situation was good, obviously, it’s not what you want to hear at 27 but at the same time from the nurses, the doctors, everyone involved in football, everyone who I have spoken to has been amazing,” Dixon said. “So it’s been good. It hasn’t been too hard mentally when you’ve got the support around you that everyone has given me, so it’s been really good in that way.” Dixon drew particular strength from the support of Tracy Tombides, the mother of Australian footballer Dylan Tombides who died in 2014, nearly three years after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Tombides progressed his career to represent West Ham in the popular English Premier League and was renowned among Australian soccer fans. “Speaking to Dylan’s mum, Tracy, during the chemo process, obviously she’s helped me through what Dylan went through,” Dixon said. “Speaking to people who have been close to someone who’s had it, unfortunately for Dylan it didn’t work out, but to know people are thinking of you or trying to help you in any way possible, it makes a big difference. “And obviously, my family has been amazing. “They’re over in Perth, but still the support you get from them and from Hume, from everyone, it did help a lot. “People think like they’re just messaging you and saying hope you’re doing well and stuff, but it does help a lot.”

‘‘ Dixon in partnership with the DT38 Foundation and Professional Footballers Australia hosted an exhibition match on April 3, featuring famous footballers to raise funds to educate men on the the importance of self-checking for lumps and other anomalies and acting swiftly. The day was a great success, with popular football figures on-field alongside Dixon including Thomas Sorensen, Fahid Ben-Kalfallah, Rashid Mahazi, Jai Ingham, Rodrigo Vargas, Michael Zappone, Vince Lia, Alan Davidson, and other NPL and A-League names playing in the friendly match. “The day was really good, we orgainised it in pretty quick time,” Dixon explained. “It was mainly Hegs [Nick Hegarty] that orgainised the whole thing for me really because I was going through the chemo at the time so Hegs and a few of the boys, Hayden Tennant and Mark Ochieng, organised loads and they were amazing. “It ran so smoothly and everyone involved with the game had a good time, had a good laugh, and really enjoyed themselves. “The most important part was we raised a lot of money for the foundation and we also got a lot of awareness out there for people. “The whole day was such a big success and it was really good.” From 100 donations so far, $13,735 has been raised on the GoFundMe page to support the DT38 Foundation. Stop soldiering on and act now By Christopher Carter, CEO of North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network The coronavirus pandemic caused a lot of people to fall ill – but not all of them because they caught COVID-19. Behind the stark statistics of daily case numbers, hospitalisations and deaths there is another story. We could call it the pandemic’s long shadow. When the first wave hit, and every day since, thousands of people across our region decided to put off seeking help for other health matters. Doctors call this sort of thing “deferred care” – the decision to delay seeing a GP about something new, or to opt out of a blood test or an X-ray, or to avoid a prescription renewal. No one knows precisely how many people have done this, but experience overseas suggests it’s a big number – and this could cause trouble down the track, for patients and the health system. There is a single, important message that all GPs, nurses and specialists agree on: don’t put care off any longer. Talk to your doctor, have a chat, act now. As far back as late 2020, US researchers started calling the rise in deferred care the “hidden harm” of COVID-19. The situation has only worsened since then, but by how much is difficult to know. Doctors in general practice and hospitals have seen a drop in presentations for a wide range of non-coronavirus matters. For some conditions, such as flu and some other infectious diseases, the dip was probably because movement restrictions, masking and lockdowns meant that fewer people were getting poorly. It is very unlikely, however, that some other things, such as heart disease, diabetes,

digestive disorders, sexually transmitted diseases and cancers have become less common. Far more likely, people have been delaying routine screening, tests,cancelling appointments, or simply trying to tough it out. But why? For many, clinics and hospitals are seen as high-risk environments for catching COVID-19. Others have delayed things because they were isolating, caring for sick family members, couldn’t afford particular

tests or medications – or because the whole damn pandemic experience left them feeling anxious and depressed. If you’ve had any of these experiences, please know that you’re far from alone! One of the big problems with putting off treatment for what seem like minor matters, however, is that they can suddenly escalate into major problems requiring a stay in hospital.

The new look Sharks are building momentum Hillside coach Charlie Denaro believes his team can match it against any team in the Essendon District Football League division 1 competition, but admits time is needed for his new list to build chemistry. The club has brought in a stack of new players this season, with Denaro revealing just seven players from last season played in the club’s round one team. Denaro, who has been coach of the Sharks since 2020, said the new players have been exciting for the club. “We have had a massive change of our list, which has been really exciting for the club,” Denaro said. “And the players that we brought into the club, guys like Lucas Failli, Carlo Riccardi, Bailey Kirkman, Cassius White, Joshua Covelli, of course, and there’s others that I’m gonna miss. “We’ve brought a lot of really good footballers into the club, but equally important there’s been probably another 20 that have come along.

“We are definitely in a far better position now than what we were last year.” Denaro believes his side can challenge the best in the competition. “We think we’re going to be pretty competitive to be honest,” he said. “We think we can match
it against any team and so far, obviously Roxburgh Park and Tullamarine got the better of us but we’ve got a lot of improvement.” The Sharks have started their season with one win from the first three games. The win came in round two against the Sunbury Kangaroos by 55-points, while they lost to Roxburgh Park by seven-points in the season opener and to Tullamarine by 33-points in round three. Denaro said his team is improving weekly and that strong inroads are being made in parts of their game with contested footy the area needed for improving. “By the time we get to the middle of the year, we would like to see that we’re going to be right in the mix and hopefully we grab that last or second last spot in the top four,” he said. Denaro said time was required for his team to gel together. “Because we are such a new list, it’s gonna take us quite a few games before our boys get
Haider scoops six gold By Max Hatzoglou St Albans youngster Zulqarnain Haider almost had too many medals to carry around his neck by the time he finished his incredible run at Australian Little Athletics Championships at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium on April 23-24. The 13-year-old from Keilor Little Athletics, affectionately known as Zulq, won gold medals in six events including the 100m, 200m, 80m hurdles, 200m hurdles, 4 x 100m relay and medley relay. The wins helped Victoria lift the major team trophy for the championship in the under-13s. Haider was proud of his performance and thankful to those who support him. “I feel really proud to win gold at ALAC and I couldn’t have done it without my coaches and parents,” Haider said. “It’s great to have my parents see me compete and to see how proud they were. The year 8 Wesley College student enjoyed the chance to represent his state and hopes to progress to making the Australian team in future. “It’s an amazing experience to represent Victoria and knowing that the Victorian team is just a step away from an Australian team,” he said. “It’s been a really big season so it’s great to finish it with ALAC and competing with my friends and for my state.” Zulq was selected among 43 under-13 and under-15 athletes to represent Victoria at the national event, which was held for the first time in three years due to COVID restrictions. It was also the first time athletes with disabilities were able to compete in multi-class events. Little Athletics Australia president Sherrie Boulter said the championships were an excellent way to conclude a successful summer season for Little Athletics in Australia. “It’s great to have the Coles Australian Little Athletics Championships back after a two-year hiatus due to COVID and to be able to include multi-class athletes for the very first time,” Boulter said. “The event has been sorely missed by everyone and to have our best under-13 and under-15 athletes competing for their state once again is extremely important for the Little Athletics pathway and for the kids to showcase their talent on a national stage.” 18 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 3 May, 2022

Saints nail a fifth round win St Albans has continued its excellent turnaround from last season, picking up its fifth win of the season in round 10 of the National Premier League and continuing its Australia Cup campaign after a fifth round win. The Australia Cup 4-2 win over the Whittlesea Ranges marked the Saints’ fourth win in their last five matches this season. The season so far has marked an incredible turnaround for the Saints who avoided relegation last year due to the season ending early due to COVID even though they finished on the bottom of the ladder. The Saints recorded two wins and four draws for a total of 10 points from its 18 games last season. Already this season, they sit on 17 points after 10 games and are competing with the best teams in the competition. In their third game this season, they defeated second-placed Avondale 1-0, playing away from home. Coach Kruni Razov, who has been in the senior coaching position since 2016, said he was pleased with the start to the season and believes his team has more to prove. “We’ve been good, a lot better than what we were last year, we are a lot more competitive, a lot more complete throughout the park, defensively a lot stronger and not leaking as many goals as we were last year so it’s been a good start,” Razov said. “We are happy with the way we’re traveling, but there’s lots of room for improvement and that’s the scary thing so we believe we are at least 25-30 per cent and can still be a lot better in certain areas of the game.” Razov said he would like to see more of an attacking flare from his side which he thinks could push his side another step forward. A win for the Saints in round 11 NPL on May 1 would mark their fifth from their last six matches. In other Australia Cup results, Brimbank Stallions defeated Yarraville 2-1, Green Gully defeated Fitzroy City 3-0, North Sunshine lost to Goulburn Valley Suns 5-0, Keilor Wolves lost to Whittlesea United 3-1 and Melbourne Knights defeated Bulleen Lions 2-0.
