Summer fun With temperatures rising past 30 degrees last week, there was no better place for locals to go and cool off than Altona Beach. Staff shortages hit hard Chronic staff shortages driven by increasing COVID-19 cases are putting a strain on businesses in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, particularly those in the hospitality sector. Small businesses have had it tough, dealing with repeated lockdowns and staff supply shortages due to a lack of international students and backpackers. Now these businesses face staff shortages within their own ranks, as the soaring number of COVID cases force thousands of workers into isolation.

Footscray Traders Association president and Littlefoot Bar owner Stuart Lucce-Pope said many businesses are facing uncertainty everyday about how many staff members will be able to show up to work. “Last week I was running on half the front of house staff that I normally have, so that leaves the staff behind doing, you know, longer shifts and doing the sort of work of 10 men or women,” he said. Mr Lucce-Pope said he knows of other businesses in the area such as Kindred Studios and Pride of Footscray who are struggling, the latter particularly with the

new restrictions on dance floors. Altona Cafe Bezirk made an announcement on their Facebook last week saying they would be adapting the way they operate due to current staff shortages, converting their cafe into a bakery. “As with so many businesses around Melbourne, staff shortages have impacted the way we would prefer to operate our business,” the post said. Despite being in a similar position to where they were at the beginning of the pandemic, there is currently no support available for businesses like Bezirk or Littlefoot Bar,

because the state is not in an official lockdown. “Last weekend, we probably did, on Friday and Saturday, 25 to 30 per cent of what we normally do,” Mr Lucce-Pope said. “So we’re down 70 per cent, which is what, you know, it was a trigger for support in the past.” While Mr Lucce-Pope said the local community has been fantastic in supporting his bar, the situation he’s in feels like a never ending cycle. “It’s sort of something different every time, it feels like you’re beaten with a different stick.”

Staff shortages impact waste By Molly Magennis Staff shortages have impacted waste collection services in Hobsons Bay, with residents asked to have patience and understanding over the coming weeks. Council’s waste collection contractors were unable to collect the green food and garden waste bin on Monday, January 10. All bins were emptied the following day, however this impacted services for the rest of the week. Council said contractors worked throughout the past week, extending shifts and bringing in additional drivers to help empty the bins.

Mayor Peter Hemphill said staff shortages remain a changing situation. “Similar to many local businesses, COVID-related staff shortages are impacting council’s waste collection contractors with drivers unable to work,” he said. “If the bins haven’t been collected as scheduled, please leave them out, as our contractor is working hard to empty them by the following day.” The disruptions come as council announced it would be initiating a large-scale trial of paper bags to help recycle food scraps, after a small-scale trial done in 2021 received positive feedback.

The green food and garden waste bin has remained an issue since council decided to change its collection schedule to fortnightly instead of weekly last year, the result of which has left many residents complaining about the stench of the bins. On a Hobsons Bay community Facebook page last week, one resident asked if there was anything that could be done to get the weekly collection back. “I am concerned as the maggots are going overboard in the bins and we are going to be inundated with flies,” he said. Another resident said she will not be going on walks around the neighbourhood on green

bin collection day anymore. “Last time was so unpleasant and there was no escape, just bin after bin, mouthful after mouthful of rancid air,” she said. Cr Hemphill said the new paper bag trial will make it easier for residents to recycle their food and reduce landfill. “By sending less to landfill we reduce harmful emissions and reduce costs to council and residents.” Residents must register for the paper bag trial via council’s website. Borrow some fun at the toy library The Maribyrnong Toy Library is open and available for residents in the area, giving kids a chance to try out new toys and parents an opportunity to connect with each other. The Maribyrnong Toy Library is situated inside the West Footscray Neighbourhood House and also at the Maidstone Child and Family Centre. Established about 25 years ago, the library runs on a yearly membership system of $80 or $45 concession in order to take toys home. A membership is not needed however for children to come and play with toys in the

library, West Footscray Neighbourhood House community programs co-ordinator Tania Jorquera said. “We’re sort of at the moment running a little bit of a deal where we’re offering people the opportunity to sign up for a term at $20, just to give them the opportunity to try and see if it’s something that they might be interested in,” she said. Ms Jorquera said not only is the toy library good for the environment by reducing the amount of unused toys that end up in landfill, it was also helpful for low income families in

the area. “[It’s] a huge sort of way to save money,” she said. “We’re sort of looking at ways of almost taking the toy library out to [vulnerable communities], it’s something we’ve been working towards this year.” The toy library reopened face-to-face on Tuesday, January 18. Food relief is among a variety of services available to residents in Hobsons Bay who are currently isolating due to COVID-19. The Hobsons Bay Community Has Heart ‘Community Connector’ program has links with local service providers and networks to assist residents with a wide range of needs. The Community Connector program has received 321 requests for food relief from August 10, 2021, to January 12, 2022, with hundreds more requests going directly to other community organisations. Mayor Peter Hemphill said the Community Connector initiative is “all about making it as easy as possible for residents to access immediate support.” “The majority of food relief requests are referred to council’s partner, Laverton Community Integrated Services, to deliver food supplies to households. “Many other local community organisations play an important role providing support and services to people in isolation. “If you are isolating and need support, please don’t hesitate to connect with us.” Medication, nappies, masks, dog walking, emergency pet food, counselling and domestic violence support services are among the other services available to individuals and families who are currently isolating. Volunteering is fruitful

Yarraville Cricket Club will postpone its 50th anniversary celebration due to COVID concerns. The club was set to hold the celebration this month, but has been forced to postpone the event amid health and safety concerns due to the level of COVID currently in the community. The announcement was made on the club’s Facebook page last Tuesday, which said the decision was made after consultation with the committee and life members. “With the level of COVID-19 cases in the community, the risk to our members and their families, along with our playing group, to hold a large indoor gathering at the moment is just too great. “As a committee, we are equal parts frustrated and disappointed in having to make this decision at such late notice, however it is the most logical one to be made at the moment. “We are working closely with the Yarraville Club on locking in another date, most likely in early October 2022. Once this has been confirmed, we will pass along further details.” Tickets that have already been purchased will be automatically transferred to the new date, the post said.

By Alesha Capone Christine Mak has been recognised with a Lalor Hero Award for her role as a volunteer leader at Werribee Park Heritage Orchard (WPHO). Lalor MP Joanne Ryan recently presented Ms Mak with the award, which acknowledges residents and groups who “go above and beyond” to help the community. Ms Mak, who lives in West Footscray, said it was an honour to receive the award. “It is really a team effort at the orchard – I help to organise the activities, but it is the hard work and dedication of our members to make things happen at the orchard,” she said. A group of volunteers maintains the orchard, which dates back to the 1870s and features less-common species of fruit trees. The WPHO volunteers also research heritage trees and host school visits at the orchard. They run twice-yearly grafting and sales days, along with other fundraising activates, to raise money for their activities. Ms Mak said she began volunteering at the orchard after attending a Winter Grafting Day in 2016 and joined the WPHO committee in 2017. As well, she has served on the Grafting Day subcommittee, and as nursery co-ordinator and vice president. “The major focus of WPHO is to preserve heritage varieties of fruit trees and fruiting plants,” Ms Mak said. “This is the work that I enjoy most.” Her fellow WPHO volunteer John Marks said that during Ms Mak’s time at the orchard, she has upgraded many records, procedures and communication measures within the volunteer group. “She is the heart and soul of WPHO, a dedicated hard worker, popular and deserving

Police keep an eye on beaches By Molly Magennis

Aside from dealing with a couple minor issues, Hobsons Bay Inspector Tim O’Connor said overall the behaviour of people at and around beaches has been good. “Generally the behaviour of everyone has been really good,” he said. “We had a number of hot days over the New Year period, but there was nothing significant that came out of that from an anti-social behavior [perspective].

Am operation focused on maintaining safety on Hobsons Bay beaches this summer has been successful so far, according to police. Operation Summersafe is a statewide Victorian operation held annually every summer, with police patrolling beaches and surrounding areas to mitigate anti-social behaviour. Starting in November last year and running until this March, police in Williamstown and Altona have been actively patrolling in areas

“We’re very happy with the behavior that was seen by everyone on the beaches. We’ve had a strong police presence there, and we’ll continue that throughout the summer period.” One of the things police have been experiencing however, is theft from beaches, with valuables like mobile phones being stolen when people leave their belongings to go swimming. “At Altona they’ve got the lockers (at Norfolk Cafe, Altona Beach),” Inspector O’Connor said.

“So I really encourage people to use those lockers to store their valuables and [that] just reduces that risk.” Inspector O’Connor said police had also experienced issues with people accessing Altona Pier despite it being closed and fenced off due to structural concerns. “Look, it’s not safe. That’s why there’s a fence up and they shouldn’t be using it,” he said. Inspector O’Connor said police are also gearing up to make preparations for Australia Day.

Motor vehicle theft

Maribyrnong police are investigating a string of thefts from motor vehicles in Braybrook, Footscray and Footscray West. Police said the incidents took place between December 8 and December 9 last year. It is believed stolen credit cards were used at several service stations across the Footscray, Braybrook, Kensington and North Melbourne areas. Police have released an image of a man who may be able to assist with inquiries. Midsumma celebration By Molly Magennis Midsumma Westside returns to Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, with a range of activities and events celebrating the LGBTIQA+ community. The festival will run from January 23 to February 13. Hobsons Bay council will host 11 free COVID-safe events, starting off with a launch of the festival at the Substation Newport from 2pm to 4pm. Other events include art exhibition ‘Impossible Dance (iii)’, which will showcase photographs taken from queer club performances and spaces over the past decade, and ‘Stepping out with Pride’, a creative workshop hosted by a leading costume designer. Mayor Peter Hemphill said council wants the LGBTIQA+ community to feel as though they can be themselves without fear of discrimination within the municipality. “To demonstrate this, we take every opportunity to fly the Rainbow Flag on days of significance for the LGBTIQA+ community,” he said. “This year we have gone one step further in transforming the forecourt of the Altona Theatre at the Civic Centre into a Rainbow as a public demonstration of support for an important part of our community.” In Maribyrnong, Bluestone Church Arts Space, Pride of Our Footscray and Footscray Community Arts will also be hosting their own events as part of the festival. Police are appealing for information after a police car was rammed in Altona North on Friday, January 7. Police noticed a Holden Commodore sedan without a rear number plate in a Millers Road car park about 1.30pm. The vehicle suddenly reversed into a police divisional van, and narrowly missed an approaching police officer. The police officers were not injured. Police said the grey Holden Commodore had a distinctive white boot and rear bumper, and the two men and woman believed to be inside fled the scene. The vehicle was then involved in an incident on Sneydes Road at the Princes Freeway overpass, where one of the occupants allegedly assaulted a person with a hockey stick about 2pm. The vehicle was later found abandoned on Enfield Avenue in Werribee that afternoon. Police have released CCTV footage of the vehicle and are urging any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Youth leadership program open By Molly Magennis The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation Youth Leadership Program is back on in 2022, with applications open to young people in the west. The program is open to those aged 14-16 who are living or working in Ballarat, Ararat, Melton, Pyrenees, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. The program, established in 2013, gives participants the opportunity to learn from community leaders and develop skills in

resilience and leadership, build confidence and make new friends along the way. Over 10 sessions which will run fortnightly, participants can expect to take part in practical team building challenges, careers expositions, mentoring from respected industry leaders, coaching courses, AFL and AFLW match visits, Western Bulldogs volunteer opportunities and council workshops. Bulldogs youth development co-ordinator, Hannah Singleton said over the course of the program, a variety of topics will be covered which may not necessarily come up at school.

“It’s a good opportunity to actually explore topics that are possibly quite present in society but not really touched on at school, like talking about mental health in a safe space, gender equity and the issues there, but also some other sort of potential opportunities to help improve these issues as well,” she said. “We have a session around intercultural understanding, so getting to know different cultures, not only in the room, but maybe even throughout the west of Victoria, which is quite multicultural, but also the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.”

Throughout the program, the participants are encouraged to develop their own project on a topic they’re passionate about, to use as an opportunity to give back to their community. “A big [thing] is you know, being able to feel, I guess, like they’re contributing to their communities because through their projects they’re having a voice as well in their community, which is really, really nice to hear,” she said. A Williamstown resident is starring in a two-woman theatre production this February. Sally McKenzie will play the role of Rose in the upcoming season of ‘Betty’, to be shown at Theatre Works St Kilda from February 16 to February 26. ‘Betty’ is an exploration of the often complex mother-daughter relationship, loosely based on the relationship that creator Jules Allen (who stars alongside McKenzie) had with her own mother. When Rose finds herself succumbing to dementia, her daughter Lucy is tasked with trying to care for her. This situation not only brings Lucy face-to-face with old age, but resurfaces memories from Rose’s past. While the play does deal with serious issues, McKenzie said there are definitely elements of

A sneak peek at Footscray primary upgrades By Molly Magennis Designs have been released for the upcoming Footscray Primary School upgrade. The upgrade was announced last year by Education Minister James Merlino and Footscray MP Katie Hall thanks to a $20 million investment from the state government. The renders showcase a covered outdoor learning area, which will have large storerooms for sporting equipment and changing rooms with toilet facilities. Staff and pupils will be able to take part in sporting activities such as basketball and netball, and members of the community will also be able access the area at weekends.

A two-storey learning hub will also be a feature of the upgrade, and will allow the school to increase enrolments to an additional 200 pupils. The hub will include sensory retreat spaces that will support neurodiversity in students, and a new staff centre on the first level will allow teachers to get together and professionally collaborate. Ms Hall said Footscray Primary School has a proud history in the community, and is excited to see it develop into a learning space that can be used for years to come. “I’m thrilled to see the school start a new chapter – thanks to a $20 million investment from the Andrews Labor government,” she said

“The new designs have been shaped by the school community and access to the new facilities, such as the basketball court, will be available to the broader Footscray community out of school hours. “This massive upgrade will help Footscray Primary School to grow and modernise.” The new additions to the school are set to be completed in 2023.

The Victorian Turf Cricket Association is mourning the shock death of president Steve McNamara. McNamara, who had been president of the association for nearly 10 years, died on Saturday. He had been an influential figure in the local cricket for a number of years. The VTCA division 2 competition is named after McNamara, along with that grade’s best and fairest award. VTCA secretary and good friend Deanne Trewin said that McNamara was one of a kind. “It come as a shock,” she said. “Steve is the one who puts together the fixtures which is a nightmare of a job. He implemented so many things, like we’ve got the game of the round now streamed. “There’s so many things he has done as president of the competition. He tried to move us forward and make us a better competition.” Trewin said she had been friends with Steve and his wife Josie for 15 years. She said that they don’t think they will ever find someone who can fill his shoes. “He had a huge heart,” she said. “ He was a true gentleman and was someone who was there when you needed a shoulder to cry on. “He loved his family especially his two beautiful grandchildren. “He was one of a kind.” The association will have an emergency meeting this week to put things in place for the rest of the season. Trewin said McNamara would have wanted them to get on with playing cricket. Local cricket clubs took to social media paying tribute to McNamara, including Hoppers Crossing where he was previously club president. Hoppers Crossing president Jake Porter told Star Weekly that McNamara had played such an important role at the club for a long time. “He was president the last time that we won a first XI premiership,” he said. “He was a volunteer, a junior and senior coach and president for six years. Him and his entire family had an impact on the club. It is a shock to lose him.” Porter said the club would wear black arms this weekend in honour of McNamara. He said that McNamara’s influence on cricket as a whole in Melbourne’s north-west can’t be underestimated. Sydenham-Hillside on its Facebook page said McNamara was a dedicated and supportive cricket administrator and was particularly helpful to the club in its early years on turf. McNamara leaves behind his wife Josie and children John and Daniel.

Splashing through the holidays W

ith the temperatures rising last week, people of all ages decided to hit the water to try and cool down. Early in the week, many people headed to Altona beach, making the most of the open space. Others headed to pools like Sunshine Leisure Centre, Melton Waves and the Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre outdoor pool. The pools had plenty of activities for children, and parents could either join in or watch from the sidelines. The pools were also popular places for teenagers to catch up with their mates. Others took their love for the water a bit further and headed to Funfields Themepark in Whittlesea for a day out. As well as all the slides and water fun, families could enjoy the Mystic Kingdom, thrill rides, go-karts and mini golf. Girls bat up and make history at Williamstown Williamstown CYMS Cricket Club has achieved another club milestone, fielding a junior girls’ team for the first time. The new junior under-11 girls’ team debuted this season and was established after the club introduced the first senior women’s team during the 2020-21 season. CYMS Junior Cricket president Jim Miller said it made sense for the club to introduce a junior team after the success they had with the seniors who managed to win a grand final in their first year. “We tried to see if we could encourage junior girls who had an interest in playing cricket because you know, our junior club supports our senior club,” he said. “It’s all about providing a pathway I suppose for our junior cricketers to then head into senior cricket. If we were going to be successful in our senior girls, it made sense to us that we were developing junior girls.” Over the past year the club has made it a real priority to get the word out about its junior girls’ team, producing flyers and doing campaigns in local primary schools. “We didn’t know how successful it was going to be, so we upped our ante, tried to do whatever we could, encouraging or sort of letting people know that we were trying to get an under-11 and an under-13 girls’ team,” Miller said.

“It was really pleasing when you know, we got our first couple of first couple of registrations, and then we got a couple of more

Sprinting ahead for Vic By Molly Magennis Two Altona Life Saving Club athletes competed in the Surf Life Saving Australia Super Surf Teams League at the weekend. Jack Wolff and Saxon Davidson were a part of two Victorian teams that competed in the event in Bondi, the Victoria Blues and Victoria White. It was the first time Victoria has ever fielded two teams in the event, which was a curtain raiser for the Kelloggs Nutri Grain IronMan and IronWoman Series. Both athletes achieved individual success, with Wolff coming first in the round one Men’s beach sprint B final, second in the round three Men’s beach sprint B final and third in the round two Men’s beach flags B final. Davidson took home third place in the Men’s beach flags A final and first place in the

Altona Gators will begin the search for a new men’s coach after Lanard Copeland left the club. The Australian Basketball Hall of Fame inductee led the division two men’s team through a successful 2021 season, before it was interrupted due to COVID lockdowns just weeks before the finals were set to begin. Copeland was named Altona’s Co-Coach of the Year for the senior program and was recognised as Big V Division Two Men’s Coach of the Month in April. In a post on the Gators Facebook page, coaching director Randy Shaklin said Copeland “brought a level of competitiveness to our men’s program that we hadn’t seen in some time”. “I want to thank him for conducting himself like a true professional and leading his team with class. The program will be better for having had him.” The Gators wished Copeland the best of luck as he embarks on a career in media. Copeland signed with the Philadelphia 76ers as an undrafted NBA rookie, and later with the Los Angeles Clippers before heading to Australia He also worked with basketball great Andrew Gaze as assistant for the NBL side the Sydney Kings from 2016 to 2019.
