Rail electrification hope By Tara Murray The train line between Sunshine and Rockbank should be electrified in the vicinity of 2036, according to a new Infrastructure Victoria report. The report assessed the impact of more Victorians working from home as a result of the pandemic. It considered where Victorians may live and how they might travel if working from home trends persist well beyond the pandemic recovery period. Even if working from home continues, the report found there would be significant impacts for Melbourne’s outer municipalities, with traffic congestion likely to persist. The report said with more people living in outer Melbourne, some workers will drive

further when commuting to the office, an issue exacerbated by expected population growth. “This results in longer car trips on average, compared to our base case,” the report said. “Morning peak congestion in inner and middle Melbourne is slightly lower … But morning peak congestion gets worse farther out on most major freeways leading towards inner Melbourne. “Working from home will not solve road congestion. “This means overall demand for public transport remains strong in the medium term, even with a shift to working from home.” The report highlighted road and public transport infrastructure needed to help meet the demand. The report calls for the state government to

continue to progress the Western Rail Plan, including electrification of the Wyndham Vale line. It urged the development of a business case to extend electrified metropolitan train services from Sunshine to Rockbank by 2031 and for the extention to be constructed by 2036. It also wants the government to consider adding extra stations on the Melton corridor. Infrastructure Victoria also recommended the state government fund libraries and aquatic centres in growth areas, and build new hospital capacity to cater for demand, especially in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer northern and western suburbs. Many of the recommendations have previously been supported by Brimbank and Melton councils. Brimbank council has been calling for an Integrated Transport Strategy for

Melbourne’s west which leverages the strategic position of Sunshine by improving connectivity and access to other priority precincts and activity centres in Wyndham, Melton, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley. Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the council welcomed the report’s recommendations to continue to progress the Western Rail Plan and extend electrified metropolitan train services from Sunshine to Rockbank. “The report makes clear that while more people will work from home at least some of the time in the future, road congestion will not improve and will in fact worsen in some of the outer areas of Melbourne. This further supports council’s Fix the Calder campaign, to help address some of the congestion issues along that important transport corridor,” she said.

St Albans Gift gets ready to fire By Tara Murray The runners are ready and the blocks will be out as the St Albans Gift returns next year. After not going ahead in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be run on January 15 at the St Albans Sports Club. The gift is run by the St Albans Sports Club on behalf of the St Albans cricket and football clubs. Gift co-ordinator Terry O’Donnell said there had been some doubt about the event being run next year, but things were now all go. “From a club perspective they’re excited to

get people back into the venue,” he said. “There was some doubt and if we didn’t get a grant from [Brimbank] council, it probably wouldn’t have got up and running. “The council came along with it and the club was happy to get it up and going.” The event has been going for 12 years and there will be 10 events ranging from under-14s, seniors through to masters, on the program next year. For the first time, the women’s prize money will be the same as the men’s. Mr O’Donnell said this was something that was starting to come in at more and more events.

Mr O’Donnell said the event had become more popular in recent times. “Many people use it as a launching pad to the Stawell gift,” he said. “It attracts people from interstate and people are trying to win it. “In 2019 the men’s winner who won the St Albans Gift won the Stawell Gift. Last year, the Maribyrnong Gift winner won the Stawell Gift. “The ones in the west are doing really well.” Mr O’Donnell said they were still yet to finalise details of what else will happen on the day, while entry into the races are still open until until the end of December.

All-abilities encouraged to have a go Two free all-abilities golf clinics will be held at Keilor Public Golf Course this week. The events are being held in the lead up to International Day of People With a Disability, with councils from across Melbourne’s west coming together to host an all-abilities regional inclusion activities week. The golf course and Brimbank council will host two clinics for children, young people and adults.

Led by all-abilities coach Scott Wearne, the clinics will include an introduction to golf and an opportunity for participants to make new friends. Course venue manager Jack McDonald said they were incredibly pleased to partner with Brimbank council in the lead up to International Day for People with a Disability “Golf is a terrific way to keep active and form social connections, so we are very excited

Brimbank council is investigating sinkholes just outside the playground at Verona Drive Reserve in Taylors Lakes. Star Weekly was made aware of the sinkholes late last week, with no signs or safety measures in place on Wednesday night. Brimbank council infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the area has since been made safe. “Council’s maintenance staff have made the area safe, and they will investigate and take further action, as required,” he said. “Subsidence can occur for several reasons, and recent heavy rains could be a contributing factor.” It’s not the first time that sinkholes have been found at that reserve. The council previously addressed a subsidence issue at the reserve in 2019. On that occasion, an inspection of the council’s underground drainage assets determined they were not the cause. AusNet reveals proposed transmission line route Undergrounding the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project would cost 16 times more according to an investigation into the construction of the transmission line. AusNet Services announced on Friday, it had narrowed down the corridor of land for a proposed route to provide clarity to hundreds of landholders. The proposed route for the 190-kilometre transmission line between Sydenham and Bulgana is the result of 18 months of investigations, field surveys and consultation. WVTNP executive project director Stephanie McGregor said it had been designed to run along existing transmission line easements and

at a maximum distance from houses as far as possible, and to minimise impacts – including on Aboriginal cultural heritage, agriculture, and vegetation. “Determining this proposed route is a positive step toward unlocking more clean, renewable energy as the state moves to sustainable green power in coming years,” she said. “There are three locations along the route where alternative options are still being investigated – at Hepburn Lagoon, Darley and Melton Aerodrome – due to potential visual, landscape, Aboriginal cultural heritage and aviation impacts.“ AusNet Services also released the

preliminary findings of its investigation into undergrounding the transmission line, including full and partial undergrounding. The investigation has found that undergrounding the transmission line would require significant soil and vegetation removal and disturbance of Aboriginal cultural heritage, would limit opportunities for future renewable development, not meet the technical availability and reliability requirements of the electricity system, and cost approximately 16 times more. As a result, overhead construction has been recommended. Melton and Moorabool councils, along with

residents, have been calling for the line to be laid underground. Plumpton farm owner Barb Ford told Star Weekly in June that overhead lines would go through the middle of her property and would restrict work being carried out in some paddocks. Police Hut now restored By Tara Murray The restoration of one of Brimbank’s most historic buildings has been completed. Brimbank council and Keilor Historical Society on Saturday opened the restored Keilor Police Hut, which was originally built in the 1850s, at the annual Harricks Precinct Open Day, where the hut is now located. Descendants of Constable Lee, one of the first police officers to be based at the hut, were also in attendance. The hut is an important part of Brimbank’s local history and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is one of the very few surviving examples of a 1850s pre-fabricated building.

The building was imported during the Gold Rush and formed part of the Keilor Plains Police Station. Keilor Historical Society president Susan Jennison said it was exciting to see the building reconstructed and open for people to visit again. The building was dismantled in 2015. “It has been a long time in the making, with so many stages,” she said. “I don’t think people realise what is involved, this is a big thing. “We’re always working to preserve the heritage in the region. How exciting it is to have it for future generations.” The society has produced a book on the station, called the Pre-fab Police Station.

The restoration was funded with the help of a $200,000 state government grant, with Brimbank council also contributed $200,000. Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen thanked the historical society and the state government for helping make this possible. “I’m extremely pleased that the historic Police Hut is fully restored and re-assembled for everyone to see and enjoy. “Conserving and protecting Brimbank’s rich cultural and built heritage is important because it’s an important way for our community to learn about the history of our place.” The society will manage the hut which will be open to the public through regular open days and pre-arranged tours.

A permanent odour solution [RTO] at AkzoNobel is expected to be fully operational within the next couple of weeks. AkzoNobel had hoped to have the solution installed and working by the middle of October, but it was delayed due to customs. In a community update, AkzoNobel said the RTO arrived at Sunshine North plant in the middle of November, with it to be connected, commissioned and tested in the coming weeks. Tests will be done by AkzoNobel’s air quality consultants once the equipment is operational, to verify its efficacy. A carbon filter had been installed as a temporary measure. As reported by Star Weekly, the company has been ordered by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria to install an air motioning program after complaints from nearby residents about odours. Residents have been complaining for more than five years, with theEPA identifying AkzoNobel as the source earlier this year. Residents have also long complained about noise coming from the site as well. A piece of machinery which has been a significant noise source in recent times has now been replaced with a new, quieter motor. Structural designs for a noise reducing wall have been submitted to council for planning approval. Tara Murray

IPC Health moving to Sunshine By Tara Murray A new IPC Health site in Sunshine will make it easier for clients to access and provide more services. IPC Health last week closed its Harvester Road site, with the new Sunshine site on Ballarat Road opening next year. IPC Health chief executive Jayne Nelson said the organisation was relocating to a larger and more accessible site in Sunshine to continue to provide quality health and

wellbeing services to more people in the local community. “As of March next year, IPC Health Sunshine will be located on the first floor of 499 Ballarat Road,” she said. “This site has ample on-site parking, is within easy walking distance from Albion and Sunshine train stations and has outstanding visibility, making it easier for our clients to find us. “The new site is larger, is welcoming and allows IPC Health to offer additional services

to the local community in Sunshine.” Services that will be offered at the new site include child and family services, counselling, physiotherapy, social prescribing, paediatric occupational therapy, developmental psychology, speech pathology, podiatry, dietetics, women’s health and refugee health.” All client appointments that are normally held at Sunshine, will continue as usual with a patient’s regular IPC Health clinician or staff member.

While the new location is being prepared, services will be transferring temporarily to other IPC sites in Brimbank, Deer Park and St Albans. Ms Nelson said staff were looking forward to moving into the new facility. “We are looking forward to celebrating the opening of the new IPC Health Sunshine campus in March 2022 and encourage staff and clients to help us create a happy, safe, sustainable and healthy space that is welcoming to all.”

Doctor hangs up his stethoscope After more than 40 years, there is a change coming at Arthur Street Clinic in St Albans. Dr Kodikkakathu Saratchandran, who has been a doctor for 52 years, including 50 in Brimbank, is retiring just before Christmas. Husband and wife team Dr Akram Jabbar and Dr Ifana Akram will take over running the practice. Dr Jabbar has more than 21 years of working experience in general practice. Before moving to Australia he worked in the Sultanate of Oman and Sri Lanka. His special interests are the management of chronic diseases, diabetes, dermatology,

pediatrics, geriatrics, mental health and preventive health care. Dr Akram has been working in the medical field for the 17 years and also worked in the Sultanate of Oman and Sri Lanka. Her special interests include working across medical, surgical, pediatrics, gynecology and, management of chronic diseases, diabetes, dermatology, geriatrics, mental health and preventive health care. “We both are planning to take over the long running clinic and provide continued care for the patients of the Arthur street Medical Centre,” Dr Akram said.

“ Also, we are intending to expand the clinic and provide more services including allied health and pathology services. “It is a pleasure and honour for us to take over the more than 40 yrs old GP clinic from Dr Saratchandran and it would be a great opportunity for us to serve the community. “We have working experience in regional and metropolitan Vitoria in the past years which would help us to provide best care for our patients. “We wish Dr Saratchandran the best.”

A 55-year-old Caroline Springs man has been charged with two counts of murder following the disappearance of Russell Hill and Carol Clay from the Wonnangatta Valley in March 2020. Police spent several days questioning the Caroline Springs man after he was arrested on November 22 at a remote Gippsland campsite. He was charged with two counts of murder and faced court in Sale for the first time on Friday morning. He did not apply for bail. The investigation remains ongoing, however police can confirm that at this time, they are not looking for anyone else. Mr Hill and Ms Clay were last heard from on March 20 last year while they were camping in the Wonnangatta Valley in Victoria’s east. Despite a significant number of searches over the past 20 months, the pair is yet to be located. Campers found Mr Hill’s vehicle with signs of minor fire damage at their campsite, which was completely destroyed by fire, near Dry River Creek Track in the Wonnangatta Valley on March 21. On Wednesday, police identified a crime scene within the Great Alpine area and forensic specialists commenced searching the area. Police have not revealed exact details of the area they are investigating saying they are still finalising the search area. Investigators are also keen to speak to anyone who may have purchased a rusty silver/blue 7x5 trailer with off-road wheels between March and July 2020. The trailer is believed to have been sold on Gumtree. The accused will return to court in Sale for a committal mention on May 31.

Taylors Lake 24-hour ambulance station is a step closer A 24-hour ambulance station in Taylors Lakes is set to open in the middle of next year, more than five years after it was promised. The state government announced funding for a new station in December 2016, along with four other stations in Melbourne’s north-west. Just one of those stations has been completed. As revealed by Star Weekly in May, a planning application had been received by Brimbank council in April this year. The council approved the application in September. The station will be located on Eagle Terrace on a section of the property on the corner of Kings Road and Bellbird Avenue, with the

entrance to be off Kings Road. The station will be built next to St Luke’s Anglican Church, which is also located on the site. In a statement last week, the state government said the branch will feature a four-bay garage, four bedrooms for paramedics to recover, training facilities, a fully equipped kitchen and improved security and car parking to make sure our paramedics are safe. The branch will be delivered in partnership with May Constructions and is expected to be completed in mid-2022. Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins said the government was making sure paramedics

Stolen property found Police recovered more than $100,000 worth of stolen property after executing three search warrants. Detectives from Moonee Valley Criminal Investigation Unit executed warrants at residential properties in Tullamarine and Ascot Vale and at a storage unit in Tullamarine. The warrants follow an investigation into a recent series of theft from motor vehicles within the Moonee Valley area. Police recovered a large amount of power tools estimated to be worth $100,000 and other valuable items including wallets, keys and credit cards. A man from Ascot Vale was arrested at the scene and remanded in custody to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court at a later date. Police are working to locate the owners of the stolen property, with many of the owners identified.

Vaccine rate increases More than 86 per cent of Brimbank residents aged 15 and older are fully vaccinated, according to new data. The federal government data released last Monday, showed that 86.6 per cent of Brimbank residents older than 15 were fully vaccinated. The first dose percentage also increased by 0.3 per cent to 92 per cent on the previous week. That was the second highest of increases for municipalities with a percentage below 95 per cent. Christmas fundraiser The 5th Keilor Scout Group is helping people get ready for the Christmas season by selling Christmas trees. The group is selling the trees across three weekends, while they will also be at the Taylors Lakes Bunnings night market. Fundraising co-ordinator Erin Potter said the tree selling was the group’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Money raised from selling trees is used to help lower fees and keep the maintenance of the scouts’ equipment and hall up-to-date. “We do it every year,” she said. “We get the repeat business of people going back every year. “We get the scouts and cubs out and also sell tree stands.”

People can pick up their trees from Airport West or the group delivers to select suburbs, including Tullamarine, Keilor, Keilor North and Keilor Park. People can also pay for Christmas tree disposal. The scout group will be at 300 Fullarton Road, Airport West on December 4 and 5, and December 11 and 12, between 8.30am and 3.30pm. A Brimbank young carer wants to make an impact and help get the message out there that more support is needed. Aristea Havelas, who has helped care for her brother Kon for as long as she remembers, has been named an 2021 Young Carer Ambassador for Victoria. The ambassadors come from the Young Carer Advocacy Project (YCAP), an initiative designed to advocate for the rights and lives of young carers in Australia. As part of this project, Little Dreamers Australia, which supports young people supporting a family member affected by disability or chronic or mental illness, selected a handful of Young Carer Ambassadors to represent young carers nationwide. Ms Havelas said it was an honour to be selected as an ambassador for the project. “My mum had seen an email from Little Dreamers about them looking to have focus groups,” she said. “They wanted to hear about young carers and the experiences of carers in Australia. They wanted to know how it defines you and how not to let it define you. “They had a number of workshops.” Together, the group has released a report which they will present to the federal government, the YCAP 2021 Recommendations report. The report endeavours to celebrate young carers nationwide, further mitigate challenges faced by many young carers and better establish programs and government support for young carers. Ms Havelas said she was passionate about educating and helping people within the local community. At the most recent council meeting, former Mayor Ranka Rasic said during question time

that the council supports just 10 young carers. “There are more young carers than that in Brimbank, which I could count,” she said. “The voices aren’t heard out in the council.

A red-eared slider turtle has been removed from a lake in Caroline Springs after being spotted by a member of the public. The animal, which is classified as an exotic pest, was spotted at Lake Caroline, with Agriculture Victoria officers later attending and removing the animal. Since 2000, about 20 red-eared slider turtles have been captured in or adjacent to Victorian rivers and lakes including the Yarra River, Elwood Canal, Elsternwick Park Lake, and in urban areas of Lara, Frankston, Aberfeldie, Kensington and Taylors Lakes. Agriculture Victoria leading biosecurity officer Emily Hill said the team was extremely grateful to the resident who reported seeing the turtle “It was most likely an escapee or deliberately released animal from the illegal pet trade,” she said. “The illegal keeping of red-eared slider turtles poses one of the greatest risks of the species establishing in Victoria. “The red-eared slider turtle can carry new exotic diseases and parasites to our native turtles and reptiles leading to population declines in the wild. More advocacy needed for west By Tara Murray A Brimbank councillor is calling for LeadWest to provide more advocacy on behalf of the local community on key projects. Councillor Virginia Tachos highlighted the amount that council pays to be part of LeadWest each year at a recent council meeting and said she would like to see more advocacy to ensure value for money. The council pays more than $50,000 a year to be part of the group which represents and advocates for five councils in Melbourne’s west. “What I would like to see LeadWest do is

issue that we are experiencing and I would like to see LeadWest stand up and fight for a contamination task force.” LeadWest executive officer Sue La Greca said LeadWest had focussed on a number of outcomes and achieved results in the past two years. They include significant governance review and structural change to improve advocacy work and enable cost efficiencies, developed the LeadWest Strategic Plan 2020-2030 plan, developed a LW communications plan, worked with strategic partners across the north and west to produce a North and West Melbourne City Deal which was launched in August 2020.

Carnival returns to Watergardens

URBNSURF Melbourne surf park is welcoming the community to a poolside outdoor cinema series. The facility in Tullamarine is holding screenings of surf-themed films, aimed at getting the community to kick back, relax, and enjoy the movies while the night surfing continues. Customer and events manager Angus Johnston said the organisation was excited to start the series and welcome people back to the centre after COVID-19 lockdowns. “URBNSURF are really looking forward to launching into a jam-packed summer event schedule with the upcoming six-night Outdoor Cinema Series,” he said. “The series provides a unique poolside cinematic experience and is a great way for us to re-engage with the local community. “The event is open for all in-park guests throughout the afternoon, kicking off from 2pm each day with cold beers, world-class food & cocktails, and a DJ spinning tunes.” The screening series will include surf films such as ‘Point Break’ on Friday, December 3, and Friday, December 10, ‘The Endless Summer’ on Saturday, December 4, and ‘Reckless Isolation’ on Saturday, December 11. Food and beverages will be served at each event from 2pm, with each screening commencing at 8.30pm. Tickets are $30 for general admission, and $15 for general admission. Chants Summer Carnival will hit Watergardens every year as an ongoing event. After a successful event last year, the carnival organisers have decided to come back regularly. This year there is a new attraction, the Giant 40m Ferris Wheel, which allows for wheelchair access. Ride favourites such as the Rockstar, RocknRoll Matterhorn, Cha Cha, adrenaline pumping Freestyle and the Dodgem Cars are back. There will also be kids rides, inflatables, ball games, shooting games, catcha games, laughing clowns and show bags, with plenty of food available on the night. Entry to the carnival is $2. Return of festivals and events to aid COVID-19 recovery The return of festivals and events are much needed in helping Brimbank recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, according to council. Brimbank council released its draft festival and events policy and strategy 2022-25 at a recent council meeting, which defines the council’s role and ways it will support a program of festival and events. The report states that the council has four distinct roles in relation to festival and events, patron and partner, enabler, producer and monitor and regulator. The council will seek opportunities to partner with signature Melbourne or regional

based festivals and events. It will continue community grants to help groups run events, promote events and develop a program of skills based training and information to support festival and event organisers. The council will also investigate new sites and platforms for holding festivals and events. Cr Thuy Dang said the pandemic has severely impacted community events throughout the past two years. “Now as we are emerging from lockdown, we need to be delivering events differently and follow new guidelines,” she said.

Young soccer stars of the future Four budding sports stars from Melbourne’s west will make their mark at the School Sport Victoria competition later this week. The up and coming soccer players will represent the state in the 12 and under boys’ and girls’ teams. Tara Murray and Molly Magennis spoke to the youngsters to find out what making the squads meant to them.

t Augustine’s Primary School pupil Irena Razumic has ticked off one of her goals in making the School Sport Victoria 12 and under soccer team. The Keilor resident and her teammates will travel to Sydney this week to compete against teams from across Australia in the Sydney International Cup. The competition will be at Cromer Park Sports Complex from Friday, December 3, to Sunday, December 5. Irena was selected after two training days, one in Ballarat and one in Darebin. “I’m really excited,” she says. “I really wanted to make the team. It was one of my goals. It was something I really wanted.” Irena has been playing soccer since she was six years old, with her mother Susan saying she had good ball skills and wasn’t into girly things like dancing. Irena says she is looking forward to the challenge of competing in Sydney. “I want to play well and have fun,” she says. “I want to make new friends. We have had two training sessions together and it’s been fun. “I think it will be really special. Hopefully we can do well and if we win.”

- Analise Petersen Irena, who says her running ability is her strength, likes to play in the midfield and a little bit of defence. Her idols are Australian star Ellie Carpenter and Luka Modri?. The Calder United young gun, who will attend Maribyrnong Sports College next year, has big aims for the future. “I want to play for Australia.” Joining Irena in the squad is Maribyrnong College student Analise Petersen. The 12-year-old says she wasn’t expecting to be selected. “When I first found out that I got in, I was very emotional. “There’s new people that I haven’t met before so that’s good, and going to Sydney is very exciting.” Analise started playing soccer in 2016 and loves how the sport makes her feel. “I can’t really describe it, it just makes me feel happy, it’s like my freedom,” she says. The young sports star says she would definitely love to play soccer professionally, and looks up to Matilda players Ellie Carpenter and Hayley Raso. “I think [Ellie Carpenter] is a really strong player. “I feel like she’s a bit underrated, she’s such a great player.” The competition will mark the first time Analise has traveled interstate to play. “I’m so excited and I can’t wait for it.” Maribyrnong Sports Academy student Leyla Hussein is also making the journey to Sydney. “I am ... excited to play interstate against some of the best girls,” she says. “I am so happy I made the team.” She says she loves everything about soccer, from training and playing matches with all her teammates to scoring goals on the field. Aussie Matilda stars Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter are among her favourite players. “Everyone says I look and play like [Sam Kerr]. She is amazing on and off the field,” Leyla says. Leyla’s ultimate dream is to play in England and to represent Australia on the world stage. She was also selected for the National Training Centre (NTC) squad for the

upcoming 2022 season. The NTC is a full-time training program with the aim to help talented players progress through to achieve NPLW, W-league, National and International representation. “[It’s] another step closer to achieving my goals of playing for the Matildas,” she says. “I am also really excited about that.” Representing Victoria in the 12 and under boys team is Altona’s Robert Kutlesa. The St Leo the Great pupil plays for St Albans Saints and admits he is a bit nervous about the tournament. The 11-year-old has been playing soccer since he was three years old. “[I feel] very honoured and excited to go to

Sydney and play with the Victorian team,” he says . Robert’s favourite thing about playing football is his teammates, particularly those ones at St. Albans, because “we’ve been together for so long.” With favorite players like legend Lionel Messi, and Socceroos player Aaron Mooy, it’s no surprise Robert would love to play soccer professionally one day. As an added challenge, he will be competing with boys above his age group, although he’s not worried about that at all. “I feel good because I’m surrounded by kids that might be a bit better than me because of the age difference, and I feel strong playing in

an older group,” he says. Marijana, Robert’s mother, agrees and said his two older brothers have prepared him well for this occasion. “He’s never let them push him around, so playing above his age group, I think ... he’s confident in that space. His brothers have trained him well.” She said this amazing opportunity will be excellent exposure for her son. “Because these boys have been playing in their respective teams for a long time, you sort of get used to seeing what’s in Victoria, so we’re really looking forward to seeing what the teams are like more broadly across Australia,” she says.

Planning approvals skyrocket By Tara Murray Brimbank council approved more than $110 million worth of development for new planning applications in October alone. After a tough 12 months, the value of planning applications which were approved in Brimbank skyrocketed. The council received 88 applications in October and approved 78 permits and gave notice of decision to grant a permit to the other 10 permits. The cost of the development for new applications is $110.5 million. In October 2020, the cost of the development

for new applications was just $28.5 million, while the average for the past 12 months was $52 million. At a recent council meeting, councillor Bruce Lancashire said this turnaround was huge and significant for the community, as it will likely translate into construction jobs in the area.

Meanwhile, Victorian Building Authority data shows building permit approvals in Victoria during the last financial year were at their highest level in the past decade. The data shows that approvals totalled 123,330 in 2020-21, an increase of 18 per cent from the previous financial year (104,560) and 13 per cent more than 2018-19 (109,396). Of all permits issued, those for domestic building increased more than 22 per cent, with about 19,500 more permits issued in 2020-21 than in 2019-20. The VBA’s chief executive Sue Eddy said the building and construction sector remained strong throughout the pandemic.

“It has been a challenging time for all Victorians, however the resilience shown by the building and plumbing industries, and its ability to adapt, has meant Victoria has continued to grow,” Ms Eddy said. “With continued cooperation, collaboration and safety front of mind, we will hopefully see this positive trend continue through 2021-22 and beyond.” New building work accounted for more than 62 per cent of all building permits in 2020-21, with the number of permits issued for this work 24 per cent greater than a year ago. As the number of building permits issued increased, so did the cost of building works.

Lind grabs surprise opportunity By Tara Murray Maggie Lind had shown what she could do in the Victorian Netball League with the City West Falcons across a number of years. Two competition best and fairests, including one this year, Lind had shown she was one of the best midcourters in the state. But the opportunity to play at the higher level, the Suncorp Super Netball competition, had eluded her. That is until now, with Lind securing a contract with Collingwood for next year’s season. Lind admits she thought that her opportunity might never come. “It is a bit exciting,” she said. “I think a few swear words came out, I was like really? “I had no expectations there and I guess at my age I thought it had surely passed me. “I’m super excited. We’re in our third week of pre-season now and it’s been really good to get back into it and see the girls and be in that environment full time.” The first person Lind called when she found out was her mum, Marg Lind. The former Melbourne Kestrels coach, has coached her daughter at the Falcons and been one of her biggest supporters.

“She is pretty laid back,” Lind said of her mum. “We’re sort of a family that doesn’t get super excited about things. “She was super happy. I said to her she wasn’t allowed to tell anyone, but of course she did. “She was super proud, she knows how much hard work I’ve put into it, for her she was happy to see me get the reward for the work I had done.” Lind is the first to admit that she didn’t think she would ever get the opportunity to get a Super Netball contract. She trained with the Adelaide Thunderbirds while studying in Adelaide a few years ago, before becoming a training partner with the Magpies in the last couple of years. That included making her Super Netball debut this year. But even then, she wasn’t sure the chance would come. “I think I thought that a couple of years ago,” she said about her chances being over. “I fell out of love with it for a couple of years. I thought stuff this, what is the point? I was being overlooked all the time. “It wasn’t until maybe 2018, when I decided to play for the fun of it, I really started to enjoy my netball again and I really went in with the mindset that if I make it, I make it, it’s not a massive deal. “I think that was the best thing for me to do. I think I was lucky I always had another career path and never just focused on netball.” Having been part of the Magpies system the last couple of years, made the transition to a contracted player easier. The Magpies also had a distinct Falcons feel. Coach Nicole Richardson was part of the Falcons coaching panel for many years, Molly Jovic and Lind formed the core of the Falcons midcourt, and Jacqui Newton also played with the Falcons. “I do have history with a lot of people there,” she said. “The Falcons’ environment we are one big family, not three separate teams and I think Richo has taken that to Collingwood and she has completely changed the environment and culture there. It’s a really good place to be. “Everyone is doing it for the team and everyone wants to win. Richo is good like that, serious when she needs to be, but it’s a game and you need to enjoy it.” Lind said it hadn’t really sunk in that her and Jovic would be playing together for

One is stepping away from the Falcons for the time being. Lind, who shared the competition MVP this year, and the side were sitting on top of the ladder when the season ended due to the pandemic. “I didn’t expect that,” she said of the most valuable player award. “That was really good. When you’re playing in a team doing so well, that is a massive achievement. “I don’t really look at that stuff, we won’t be where we were if it wasn’t for the team. This year was really disappointing we didn’t finish the season. “It was one of the best teams I’ve been in for a long time. The energy was always up and we were super competitive, I really wanted to see how far we could go.” The contract also threw a spanner in the works for Lind with her studies. Lind was set to start her final year of university next year.

“I’m studying to be a veterinarian,” she said. “Next year is my final year and it sort of threw a cat among the pigeons. “It’s an opportunity I was never going to refuse. I can do uni at any stage, with netball, the body can only hold up for so long. “I’ve worked out with my uni, to expand my final year [of studies] out to about 18 months. They’ve been really supportive and Collingwood is really supportive too. “I thought I was going to have to take the year off uni.” Pre-season training has started for the Magpies with the team’s preparations for 2022 underway. And Lind is enjoying every moment of it. “It is going to be a huge jump, even training at that intensity is a massive jump. I have an expectation we are going to go all the way. I’m really excited.”

Bebic back for second season at the Knights Melbourne Knights coach Steve Bebic is keen to build on a positive first season at the National Premier League club. The Knights were sitting eighth when the season was called off early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with seven wins, five draws and six losses. The club announced that Bebic, along with assistant coach Diogo Ferreira and goalkeeping coach Tony Belica, have all recommitted for next year. Bebic said he was excited to be back at the Knights for another season, saying he felt like his work wasn’t done and there was a lot more gas left in the tank. He said there had been some real positives out of the season. “We had to roll with the punches,” he said. “There were some real positives and we were

achieving some of our goals. “The gap between second, eighth and ninth was really close. “Whichever team found a consistent run of results, could have quite quickly jumped up the ladder. “We would have backed ourselves to make finals.” Bebic said despite not getting the chance to make finals, they would look at the season as positive overall.

He said from his perspective the season was also about coming in and getting to know the playing group and setting clear goals and targets. With a focus on continuing that process, the side has started its 2022 pre-season. “We’re straight into it, training four times a week, up until Christmas,” he said. “There’s five or six new faces, with 90 per cent of the squad done.” The club is yet to announce any new signings, but Bebic said they had focused on bringing in younger types to match their age. He said the squad was one of the youngest in the competition this year. “We’re probably looking at younger types of players, who are hungry for success and look at the NPL as a stepping stone in their career,” he said.

“They’re the traits we’re looking for. The majority are towards that younger age with some pace. They know how to work hard and this is the first step in becoming professional. “It’s up to them how far they push.” Bebic said they would look to complement the young players with some experienced heads to help provide experience and set the standards. On the women’s side, the Knights have appointed John Diaz as senior coach. Diaz makes the move across from South Melbourne, having previously coached at Point Cook and Hoppers Crossing. On the Knights’ website, Diaz said he was excited for the challenge that lies ahead and is confident that the side can build on its 2021 cup success, while also improving on league competitions.

Akintola joins Thunder By Tara Murray New Keilor Thunder recruit Abiola Akintola has watched the development of the Keilor Basketball Association from afar in recent years. Having played at the association domestically as a junior, Akintola then took his talent across the state and eventually across the world. With the Thunder making the move into the National Basketball League 1 South competition next season, Akintola is returning to Keilor. Akintola said he was keen to get involved with the program having seen how far it has come under men’s coach and director of coaching Liam Glascott. “It is exciting,” he said about the development of the club. “I’ve seen from afar how far Liam has taken the whole Keilor program. It’s crazy, it’s been a rapid rise, especially from where it was when I was growing up. “The team keeps moving up and you’re seeing a lot more rep teams in VC [in the Victorian Junior Basketball League], players making

state teams and making it professionally. “Hopefully that will transition into a successful NBL1 side.” Akintola said he had never been coached by Glascott before but the two had formed a friendship. He said Glascott has been a prominent figure in basketball and Victoria, with a really strong reputation. “I’ve watched him from afar and now I’m getting to know him more and more, working out with the team.” Akintola, who lives in Essendon, said the allure of playing close to home was also part of his decision. The forward has spent much of his career at the Diamond Valley Eagles. He also spent time at the Australian Institute of Sport. He previously represented Victoria and played for Australia at under-17 and under-19 level before heading to America for college, having a successful college career at Denver University. Akintola said he was still keen to make it as far as he can with his basketball career. “I’ve always been in love with the game,” he said.

“I’m not putting any pressure on what I do. I play for fun and I play to win and see where it takes me.” The Thunder has started pre-season and Akintola said it was good to be back on the court after the pandemic. He, like the rest of the squad, are excited about what they can do. The club is expecting he will bring energy and versatility at both ends of the floor, making the squad stronger. “It’s a chance to make history,” he said. “We have the chance to write the history books. “We’ve been able to have success at each stage and, hopefully, we can transfer that success. “Pre-season has been good after the last couple of years. “I’m really excited for next year and, hopefully, we get a full season in. Going back to playing regular games, lots of trips and the fans watching us.” Akintola is third signing announced for the Thunder. Last season’s MVP Luke Sist is returning, while Jacob Lampkin joins the club from Keysborough Cougars.

When Sunshine United new recruit Qaiser Qadeer said he had some friends who wanted to come down to the club and have a hit, the club was only expecting one or two. Instead, more than half a dozen new players joined up, allowing for new relationships to be forged and a chance to embrace inclusiveness and different cultures. United president Mark Dalrymple said the group, all of Pakistani decent, had provided a massive boost on and off the field. “We lost a few players after last season and recruited a couple of guys, including Qaiser,” he said. “He came along and said he liked the place and said that he had some friends who might want a hit. “They just come along. Down the track we’ll look to have a Pakistani cuisine night and we’re looking to continue to build our culture.” Dalrymple said the new players were playing in the third and fourth XI teams this season, and their addition meant the club wasn’t struggling for numbers each week to fill sides. Both lower sides are playing Sundays, opening the door for more people to play cricket with the club fielding sides on both days of the weekend. Qadeer said the group felt welcome to enjoy cricket and participate as members in the club’s successful, warm and inclusive surroundings. Dalrymple said the club was embracing its local and multicultural community, offering safe and friendly relationships as well as great facilities to nurture and enhance inclusiveness through cricket. “You’ll often see players hitting at grounds in Brimbank,” he said. “It gives them purpose coming to a club and a bit more competition. Hopefully they’ll tell their mates.”

Hillside adds experience for a crack at 2022 Hillside has added experience and size to its squad for next year’s Essendon District Football League division 1 season. The Sharks blooded a number of young players this year, but at times lacked the experience needed to match it with the top sides. The Sharks have been one of the busier teams early in the pre-season, announcing a number of new signings. Coach Charlie Denaro said the club was happy with how things had gone so far. “We haven’t revealed them all,” he said. “There’s about 12 new faces so far. “There are some notable ones. Lucas Failli is an awesome kid and comes from Pascoe Vale. I see he will be huge for us as a young midfielder, who can go forward. He is still on Williamstown’s list. “Bailey Kirkman has come from Caroline Springs and his height is needed.

“CJ and Paris Grampsas will add bit of experience. CJ is a premiership captain with East Keilor and Paris is a 30-year-old enforcer who can play anywhere.” The club’s first signing was that of goal kicking star Josh Covelli, who has dominated the division 2 competition in recent times. Denaro said Covelli might surprise some people this year. “Josh has been flying for quite a few months now. I think he will surprise everyone as he is in the best playing shape the EDFL has seen him. “He is loving it and we have our first camp this Sunday and he is spearheading it.” Denaro said the club was still hoping to add another ruckman and a key defender. On the other side, Denaro said there had been several players, many of them reserves, who weren’t returning. Of the senior players, Hisham Kerbatieh

won’t be back. About 20 players from the club’s under-18 program will step up into senior football next year. With all the changes, Denaro said the off field side of things would be massive for the club this year. “This year we had a lot of talent, but didn’t always gel. “It’s really been a focus. We’re in the fourth week of training and we’ve been focusing on the off field stuff to get to know each other. “We’re coming together for a camp in Mt Martha, and there will be quite a few of them.” The club has also hired a head fitness coach to help build the strength on the field.

Curtis drafted to North

Not the end for Jets who missed out

By Tara Murray Melton South’s Paul Curtis is expected to bring an X-factor to North Melbourne’s forward line next year. Curtis was selected by the Kangaroos with pick 35 on Thursday night in the AFL draft. North Melbourne list manager Glenn Luff told North Melbourne media following the draft that Curtis was a player the club rated very highly. “We brought in five boys, we went into the draft knowing it was a draft that had some versatility,“ he said. “We’ve addressed the midfield over the last four to five years with some real elite talent and we bring in another elite midfielder in Jason Horne-Francis, and then from there we really addressed some needs that we had to fill long term. “And then to bring in Paul Curtis as a small forward with some X-factor, he should really complement what we’ve already got down there in the forward line. “We’re really excited with what we’ve brought in in the draft. “We feel like we have a really even mix of players coming through the club in this offseason and we’re excited to see them on the track.” It’s been a steady rise for the Western Jets forward, who kicked five goals across his first three NAB League matches in 2021, before slotting nine goals in the last four outings. He earned selection for Vic Metro in the trial match against Vic Country, where he caused major headaches, kicking 3.5 from 18 disposals. Being drafted tops off an up and down few months for Curtis who was diagnosed with COVID-19 a couple of months ago. Speaking before the draft, Curtis told Star Weekly that he was very keen and excited to play football professionally, but it was also nerve-wracking at the same time. Curtis found his love for the game at 11-years-old when he started playing for Melton South. “At that age I was just playing for fun … just playing with my mates from school,” he said. But when he reached the under-16 team, he realised how serious he was about the sport after making a few squads and having his name out there. “I started taking it a bit more seriously, as well as still having fun,” he said. Melton South coach Heath Pritchard said the club was rapt that Paul had been drafted. He joins a handful of players from the club to

make it onto an AFL list. “To have a young man who started with the junior section of the club in the under-10s and have him represent us in three senior games this year and also come and watch us, even being a water boy, every Saturday when he wasn’t playing at the Jets, shows the club’s connection to Paul and his career going forward.”

Curtis was the only Jets player who was taken in the draft. But it was good news for a former Jet, Josh Honey, who was upgraded to Carlton’s senior list. Honey was taken in the 2019 rookie draft and has been on the rookie list since. He made his debut in 2020. It was in late 2021 when he found his feet at senior level.

It’s second time lucky for Caroline Springs’ Cody Raak. After not getting drafted last year, the 19-year-old now finds himself on an AFL list, having been taken by the Western Bulldogs as a pre-selected category B rookie. Raak impressed with the Western Jets this year, to earn his chance on an AFL list. He also played three games for the Bulldogs VFL side this year and trained with them throughout. He was also named in the Vic Metro under-19 team this year, and played in the young guns match in May. He is the second Jets player to be picked in the draft, with Paul Curtis being taken by North Melbourne at pick 35. Several Western Jets draft hopefuls had been hoping to have their names called out by AFL clubs. For the likes of Liam Conway, Massimo D’Ambrosio and Harrison White, who were all coming off strong seasons, they will be hoping that their chances will come in the future. Western Jets coach Robbie Chancellor told Star Weekly in the lead up to the draft there were options for the players not selected. Chancellor said D’Ambrosio and White were the eligible to return to the Jets next season. He said they would work with the others to find them spots on VFL lists at Werribee and Williamstown if they weren’t drafted. Chancellor said the impact of the last few years would change the VFL in the coming years. “The lack of footy has stunted the development of many players. What I’m looking forward to is seeing some really good players playing state league football in the next couple of years. “They will take a little bit longer due to the lack of footy.” -Tara Murray
