Maribynong’s Christmas program has been announced, with a range of activities running throughout December. The council’s new initiative, MARIality, is an app which brings selected murals across the city to life. Residents can download the app to their phones and point it at one of the many murals across Maribyrnong city, where augmented reality technology will help transform the artworks. Residents can also enter the Santa and Sirens colouring competition through the app for a chance to win a personal home visit from Santa and his helpers on board a vintage fire engine. Footscray night market will also be back on from December 3-24 at Railway Reserve. “There’s plenty on the festive calendar to engage and entertain including new innovative interactive activities through our very own MARIality app,” sid mayor Anthony Tran said. “It’s a great addition to the amazing program of activities, making the most of the many wonderful murals that enliven our city. Call to rethink venue ban A Maribyrnong councillor holds concerns for the future of community events over a council plan to stop holding official functions at gaming venues. Counc’s draft Reducing Harm from Gambling Policy 2021-2025 was discussed at a council meeting on November 16 and is set to be released for public consultation. Cr Michael Clark said he had concerns about a section of the policy that states “council will not hold official meetings, events or community activities at gaming venues in

the City of Maribyrnong”. While Cr Clark was in support of the policy as a whole, he said council should be able to host events and meetings at community-owned gaming venues such as the Footscray and Yarraville Bowls Club, as it has done in the past. “To say that we don’t run any services or run any meetings or activities out of this facility is at odds with what’s been occurring in the past,” he said. “For years I ran neighbour watch, Friends of McIvor Reserve. We had community information days on household security.

We had Merrie Melodies sing-alongs for the elderly. “If carte blanche we say that official meetings, events and council activities will not be held at Footscray Yarraville Bowls Club, Active Maribyrnong events, they can’t happen. Events for the young, the elderly, new mothers if you like, opportunities for community engagement, socialising. These quite simply will be gone.” Cr Clark also pointed out that the Footscray and Yarraville bowls club is owned by the City of Maribyrnong. He told council that community clubs, give

back to the community. “Profits from these clubs are not privatised, profits from these clubs are in fact socialised,” he said. “In adopting this motion, and including this particular item in the body of the policy, I’m wondering whose needs are we meeting? Are we meeting the community’s needs or perhaps our own?” Council will seek community feedback on the draft policy, through a Your City Your Voice survey, with feedback to be incorporated into the final version of the policy.

Historic Kingsville home for sale By Molly Magennis A unique 1930’s Kingsville property is open for expressions of interest, presenting a rare opportunity for potential buyers. The nine bedroom house is rich with history and is estimated to be worth $4-$4.5 million, four times the average price for houses in Kingsville. If sold, it will set a record for the area. The Catholic church style house was built in 1932 by William Murphy and remained in the family for several decades until it was

purchased in the early 1980’s by another local family. The Yarraville Murphy family has been in the area since Thomas Murphy, a cabinet maker, arrived in Port Phillip in 1842 from Ireland. The Murphy’s were successful business owners, with the family opening up several quarries in the area and operating one of Footscray’s first stone crushers. When trucks eventually replaced horses, the Murphy family moved into the truck business, and with 76 trucks it was claimed that by 1959 it was the largest privately-owned

transport firm in the state. Real estate agent Anna Grech said the house has been meticulously maintained. “The property is entirely intact as it was originally built,” she said. “It’s still got all the LED lights, original windows, everything in the home is original, nothing has been added. It’s even got the little door where the milkman would leave the milk.” The current owners have received awards for the property’s garden, taking out third prize in city of Footscray’s (now Maribyrnong) 1988 bicentennial beautification competition.

Wildflowers grow with the students Victoria University is helping revive native wildflowers in Melbourne’s west by planting more than 2000 seedlings at its St Albans Campus – one for every year 12 student accepted into its early-entry VU Guaranteed program. Launched in 2018, the program allows year 11 and 12 students at more than 130 partner schools in Melbourne’s west and regional Victoria to obtain a guaranteed place at VU or VU Polytechnic before they complete their final year 12 exams. This project brings together VU’s Future

Students team with the Iramoo Grassland Centre and Nursery and VU’s Moondani Balluk centre for Indigenous staff and students. A seed library, also part of the project, will assist Iramoo Nursery to propagate and preserve these native wildflower species. Student Isabelle Day said for her and many other students, the project feels personal. “Being able to see your university encapsulate a shared vision for change in our climate condition and promote a better future for my generation of students and the world is inspiring.”

VU programs manager Emily Bodey said the project celebrates VU’s commitment to planetary health and caring for country while acknowledging the contribution VU Guaranteed students make the wider VU community. “We are excited to continue to collaborate with our partner schools and their students through the VU Guaranteed program, while supporting the preservation and growth of our native grasslands,” she said.

Hobsons Bay Crime Investigation Unit detectives are seeking public assistance after a vehicle was set on fire in Altona North in August. The incident occurred on McIntosh Road about 11.45pm on August 8. Investigators have been told a person arrived in a dark-coloured sports car, believed to be a Ford Focus Sport, which had distinctive rims. In CCTV footage released by police, the person is seen driving up to another car and pouring what is believed to have been accelerant on the vehicle, before setting it alight while it was parked in a residential driveway. The person then got into the front passenger seat of the Ford and took off north-east along McIntosh Road toward The Circle. Detective Senior Constable Brendan Bennett said police are working closely with the victim. “As you can imagine this is a traumatising experience for anyone that would be involved. Obviously we are working closely with her and finding her the support that she needs.” Detective Senior Constable Bennett said that investigators have spoken to neighbours as part of the investigation and have reassured the community that it is an isolated incident. Due to the quality of the footage, Detective Senior Constable Bennett said that unfortunately there is no physical characterises to help identify the person. Police on beach patrol By Molly Magennis Operation Summersafe is back on this summer, which means there will be increased police presence in Williamstown and Altona. Operation Summersafe is a statewide victoria police operation that is instigated every summer, and this year police will be out and about at the beaches and surrounding areas in Hobsons Bay. Hobsons Bay Local Area Commander, Inspector Tim O’Connor, said that the main focus of the operation is to ensure people, and particularly families, can enjoy their time at the beach.

“My aim is that [there will be] a highly visible police presence. On occasions we will be supported by other specialist resources from within [Victoria Police], for example we may do something with the water police,” he said. “But it’s really about maintaining public order. I don’t tolerate anti-social behaviour, which all links back to [that] I want people to attend and enjoy themselves.” The operation will also include active patrols around public transport hubs, parks, and roads surrounding beaches, such as Pier Street in Altona. Inspector O’Connor said there will be a

focus on alcohol bans this summer. “Hobsons Bay council has alcohol bans in a number of locations. We’ll support these bans and we’ll enforce these bans which could incur a $200 fine for people caught breaching,” he said. After a rise in jet ski complaints last year, Inspector O’Connor said that there will also be a strong focus on making sure that jet ski operators “have an understanding of their obligations”. Operation Summersafe will run until next March.

Brooklyn and Altona North residents are being encouraged to help make their suburbs a “better place”. As part of Hobsons Bay council’s Better Places program, residents are being urged to share what they love, what they would change and what ideas they have for the two suburbs. In the first stage of the program, residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on the two suburbs based on the three key themes of love, change and ideas. Residents are asked to include anything they think could help make Brooklyn and Altona North better places to live in the future. Deputy mayor and Cherry Lake ward councillor, Daria Kellander, said she is excited to see the Better Places model come to Brooklyn and Altona North and is confident the community will have great ideas for the future of the suburbs. “It might be ideas for public spaces and how they would like to see those designed and built in future, or ways we can improve transport and connectivity,” she said. “We want to hear it all so that we can create a vision that truly reflects those that live, work and play in Brooklyn and Altona North.” Surveys have been sent to all households but residents can also have their say online. Revamped pool reopens

New mental injury strategy

Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre (MAC) has reopened following a $1.3 million makeover. The centre revamp included changeroom renovations and an overhaul of the centre’s main entrance foyer. Construction was completed in October, with the existing change rooms now featuring new fixtures, tiling fittings and a new temperature specific air handling system. The new temperature system will allow for a more comfortable experience for customers changing after a swim or workout. The entry foyer and centre access systems were also re-designed to enhance visibility to the pools and gym and to create a more welcoming customer experience, Maribyrnong council said. The redesign will also now allow visitors to access the El Toucan cafe and retail area without requiring payment to enter the centre. Construction is also set to begin next month on the centre’s recently announced $8 million water-slide park and splash pool, which is jointly funded by the state government. The construction will have minimal impact on the centre’s current operations. Mayor Anthony Tran said that MAC continues to be a staple recreational hub for residents. “The modern, upgraded facilities will further enhance their experience and allow them to make full use of the space. It will also allow for the seamless integration of the new Waterslide and Splash Park, once completed,” he said. Prior to COVID-19, MAC was visited by more than 3000 people per day.

A new WorkSafe Victoria strategy will aim to address the growing challenge of mental injuries in workplaces. The Mental Health Strategy 2021-2024 outlines WorkSafe’s plan to prevent mental injury, build capacity for mentally healthy workplaces and support injured workers. According to WorkSafe, there were 3518 new mental injury claims last year. WorkSafe chief executive Colin Radford said mental injury claims were expected to grow to a third of all claims received in the next decade. “With many adults spending a third of their life at work, mentally healthy workplaces offer huge benefits to workers, their families and communities, and the productivity of their workplaces,” Mr Radford said. “Employers have a responsibility to provide and maintain safe working environments and systems and to control risks to workers’ physical and psychological health. “By supporting employers to take a prevention-led approach to mental health, WorkSafe aims to create safer workplaces, to reduce harm to workers who suffer a mental injury and support their recovery and safe return to work.” There are five focus areas of the strategy, including compliance and enforcement; fostering organisational change; awareness through education and training; building an evidence base; and supporting innovation. At 22, I may be the youngest mayor for the City of Maribyrnong and, one of the youngest mayors in Australian history, but I also bring the strength, knowledge and support of the previous generation on whose shoulders all young people stand today. I understand the importance of seeing faces that look like your own in all levels of government and to feel that your voice is represented in decision-making. I hope my election as mayor will inspire other young people – and especially those from diverse backgrounds – to also step up and take their place in the world, whether in sport, entertainment or politics.

Call for urgent help for Afghans By Molly Magennis Maribyrnong council is calling on the federal government to increase and strengthen its humanitarian responsibilities towards Afghan refugees. In a notice of motion detailed in a council meeting on November 16, Maribyrnong council is calling on Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne to increase Australia’s capacity and speed to evacuate as many people as possible at risk in Afghanistan. Afghans that have worked for or assisted the Australian Government, as well as women and girls, are among those council is calling on to be evacuated due to the fact that they

may be at risk. Council is also urging the federal government to increase Australia’s resettlement places for Afghan refugees to match Canada’s offer of 20,000 additional places. As a culturally diverse community home to 90 Afghan-born residents and recognised as an official Refugee Welcome Zone, councillor Sarah Carter said that it’s their responsibility

to call for more action. “There is a sentiment because we are, as has been said, a community of refugees, many refugees, that willingness to embrace a broader and more ambitious program and I think there is a mandate in our community to do that,” she said. “What I would say is that the federal government does not make for a good community or humanitarian program, communities make for an effective humanitarian program.” “It’s communities that wrap around newly arrived refugees and their families, its communities that provide a sense of place and connection, so we are well placed to do

it and to do it better than it’s being currently done.” “I think it can be made a whole lot better when the local government does get involved and more proactive in this space.” Cr Michael Clark agreed and said it was about doing the right thing. “We need to help those people who at the moment cannot help themselves.” At the 2016 Census, Maribyrnong city was recorded as being home to just over 90 Afghan-born residents, with these residents having arrived in Australia post 2001. These figures place Maribyrnong in the top 20 local government qreas in Victoria for Afghan-born residents.

A charity close to James’ heart In 2017, James Day suffered a serious neck injury during a game of footy which left him unconscious and in a neck brace for two months. This December, he’s taking on a half marathon at the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival, and raising money for a special charity close to his heart. The Maidstone local suffered bruising and swelling of his spinal cord as a result of his injury, with one of the side effects being hypersensitivity of his skin, which he says was initially quite worrying. After being in hospital for a week, Mr Day was finally given the all clear to go home but he still hadn’t fully recovered. “[For the first two or three weeks] I didn’t really leave the house because I couldn’t put a shirt on because my skin was so sensitive,” he said. On the recommendation of his doctor and neurosurgeon, Mr Day was told to avoid contact sports, which he found really difficult. “I sort of played footy since I was eight years old. To go from playing [and] having that as your main thing you focus on, to not being able to ever play that again was pretty challenging mentally, and meant I didn’t have a lot to focus on and work towards.” That was until he started seeing a psychologist to help deal with his chronic pain, who suggested that something to focus on and aim towards would be helpful in his recovery. When some friends mentioned they were doing a half marathon, Mr Day decided that it would be the perfect challenge to get him motivated and focused. Mr Day is raising money for Very Special Kids (VSK), a charity which worked closely with his cousin Lachlan when he was alive. “[Lachlan] needed full-time care while he was alive, before he passed away when he was around six years old,” Mr Day said.

New bins for food, garden waste By Molly Magennis Maribyrnong council has started rolling out new bins for residents to recycle their home’s food and garden waste. The council started rolling out the green-lidded bins last week, and will continue to deliver bins to stand-alone houses through to the end of the month. The bin will be collected fortnightly on the alternate week recycling bins are collected,

and the waste material will be recycled into compost to be used on farms, parks and gardens across Victoria. This new service will make it easier for residents to recycle their food and garden waste and will also help to reduce the amount sent to landfill, which is currently almost half of the waste in a typical red-lidded landfill bin collected in the City of Maribyrnong. The introduction of the food and garden waste service is outlined in the council’s

Towards Zero Waste Strategy. The state government has mandated all Victorian households must have access to food and garden organic waste recycling services, or local composting, by 2030. Mayor Anthony Tran said that this service is a part of their commitment to a greener future. “The roll-out of this valuable service is a key part in working with our community to drastically reduce the amount of food

waste that is sent to landfill, and we hope all residents who receive this new lime-green lidded bin make the most of the new service,” Cr Tran said. Residents who produce little to no food and garden waste or are composting at home can also apply for an exemption, and those who do not have space for another 240L can apply for a smaller 120L bin. All eligible residences will receive their new green-lidded bin during November.

‘Proactive’ presence Police will be out in force in Footscray in the coming months as part of an operation aimed at cleaning up the area and reducing anti-social behaviour. Acting Inspector Steve Hayes said the operation would focus on the Footscray CBD. “[We will be] working with the traders group and council just to provide that increased presence and tackle any …. drinking in the streets and any drug use,” he said. Police will be particularly working with traders in Maddern Square, and Acting Inspector Steve Hayes said that dog drug detection operations will also take place in the upcoming months. The ramped up police presence is in response to the ‘undesirable use of the CBD’ while Melbourne was in lockdown and usual activities were not resuming, Acting Inspector Steve Hayes said. “[With] everything opening back up again we’re sort of looking to be very proactive and getting on top of things and making sure Footscray CBD is more inviting for families

and those wanting to go out for dinner and lunch,” he said. Police will also be working alongside transit officers in the area to ensure safe movement across buses and trains. Molly Magennis

Step up as a ‘rainbow’advisor By Molly Magennis Maribyrnong council is establishing a LGBTQIA+ community advisory group, and is calling for residents to be a part of it. Council plans to establish the advisory group by December after it received an inquiry in August regarding the process of establishing one. The proposed LGBTIQA+ community advisory group will advise council on the needs people who identify as lesbian, gay,

bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, or allied/asexual in Maribyrnong. It will formally establish the council’s role in advocating for the equality and inclusion of the LGBTIQA+ people, families and communities within the wider context of Maribyrnong. The advisory group will comprise of up to three councillors (to be nominated by council), up to 10 community members and up to three representatives from community organisation, agencies or service providers that are linked with LGBTIQA+ communities

in Maribyrnong. At a council meeting on November 16, councillor Bernadette Thomas said the advisory group will greatly assist in developing a strategy and action plan to be used for years to come. “[I’m] really looking forward to expressions of interest and people getting involved in participating through the advisory group, I think it’d be a really great experience,” she said. Cr Sarah Carter agreed with this sentiment and said that the City of Maribyrnong

is a better place thanks to it’s ‘rainbow community’. “I think our community is much, much richer for it,” she said. “So it’s about time, it’s probably a little late, to be honest. But you know, it’s good that we’re starting this now.” An expression of interest process inviting applications from the Maribyrnong community is expected to begin in late November, with information on how to apply on the council’s website and social media.

Aakriti claims a stake in the future Suzanne Cory High School student Aakriti Malhotra has been recognised for her leadership and community work. Aakriti, who lives in Seabrook, is in year 10 at the Werribee school. Aakriti said it was an “absolute honour” to receive the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award at a recent school presentation night. “The thing I really value from the award, it’s a leadership and teamwork award in recognition of the extracurricular activities I continue to do locally and globally,” she said. At 15 years old, Aakriti has an impressive portfolio of volunteer work under her belt. She is an editor and project manager at Girls in STEM, an international student-run organisation that promotes science to girls and women.

Aakriti is also a member of The New York Academy of Sciences, a program for high-achieving students. Within the same New York organisation, she is part of the 1000 Girls 1000 Futures Mentees program, which encourages girls to take up leadership, communications and advocacy roles. “I think what I enjoy is really just to be able to make a difference in my community,” Aakriti said. “It’s important to empower other girls and women around the world and let them know not to stop due to gender barriers.” In addition, Aakriti is co-chair at the Victorian Student Representative Council (VicSRC), as well as being a member of its executive advisory committee. In her VicSRC role, she has spoken at

summits held by the Victorian Council of Social Service and other organisations, and met Education Minister James Merlino. “Students are a major stakeholder in education, we need to be involved in the conversation,” Aakriti said. As well, she volunteers in aged care centres and as a tutor with Equal Ed for refugee and disadvantaged students. At Suzanne Cory, Aakriti is the Rothwell House initiatives captain. A West Footscray cafe run by a mother and son duo has won a Western United partnership valued at $50,000 for the 2021-22 A-League season. Lee, who runs Dodo’s Delights with mum Ronda, said he was excited to win the promotion but was a little surprised when his cafe made the top three. “In talking to the club it was clear they wanted a good local business and so I now feel excited but also proud that the work that we’re doing with the local community is kind of being recognised in this way.” With the cafe only having been opened for a year, Lee said the pandemic has meant the business hasn’t seen as much growth as they would have liked. Lee said The Top Corner promotion has come at a really good time, and will allow the cafe to expand and open up on a larger scale. “We plan to upgrade the kitchen and upgrade our dine-in spaces to become a bigger cafe with a fuller menu,” he said. The pair started selling homemade jams and relishes at farmers markets, and even though they have moved to selling their homemade products on a larger scale, their focus is still on doing the simple things well. We don’t have probably the fanciest menu but … probably the best way to describe the menu is homely and nostalgic.”

Bridging the female job gap A pilot program has been launched in Melbourne’s west to help improve rates of employment among mature aged women, who represent the largest group of long term JobSeeker funding recipients. The ‘Women Working Together’ program will allow women who have been out of the workforce or who wish to retrain to connect with mentors to guide them through the process of professional development. COTA Victoria chief executive Tina Hogarth-Clarke said the program will deliver expertise to help bridge the gap between rates of unemployment between men and women. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics

data from 2017, workforce participation among mature aged women (55 to 64 years old) was just 58.8 per cent, compared with 71.9 among men in the same age bracket. Women aged 55 and over also represent the demographic with the fastest growing rates of homelessness, according to 2016 Census data. “The mentors will play a vital role in providing the mentees with advice around soft skills, building their confidence and boosting their self-esteem and an understanding of how to tap into existing community resources so they can amplify their passion to move forward into the workforce,” Ms Hogarth-Clarke said.

Dingoes find a safe sanctuary Nestled on the side of a hill, down a dirt road and overlooking the incredible Macedon Ranges sits a 40-hectare sanctuary for a group of 43 dingoes and four dingo cubs. Sarah Oliver visited the Toolern Vale sanctuary to find out more about its work and the dingoes it cares for.

he Dingo Discovery Sanctuary, Research and Education Centre is the only one of its kind in the world, and it aims to preserve and conserve the gene pool of the original dingo, educate the public, facilitate non-invasive research and participate in rehabilitation. Sanctuary supervisor and zoologist, Kevin Newman, says they’re working towards finding a way for dingoes and people to exist together. “There’s still a lot of anti-dingo sentiment which is what we as an organisation are trying to counteract,” Kevin says. Although there are some areas where dingoes are protected in the wild, Victoria still has a bounty on dingoes who venture into private land. This means any landowner can hunt and kill a dingo if it’s on or within three kilometres of their property, continuing the classification of the dingo as ‘threatened’ under the flora and fauna guarantee act 1988.

“Realistically, humans are the biggest danger to dingoes more than anything else,” Kevin says. “If they’re treated right and they’re raised right, or if you just leave them alone in the wild, they’re extremely wonderful animals. “More people get injured by domestic dogs in their own house than ever will get injured from a dingo.” The dingoes live in pairs in the sanctuary with life-long partners monogamously, and act more like cats than people realise. “They’re more like a cat in a dog suit,” Kevin says. The sanctuary houses all three breeds of dingoes – alpine, desert and tropical – with the focus mainly on the most at risk: alpines. One such alpine dingo is the famous Wandi who was found after being dropped in someone’s backyard, most likely by a bird of prey, and is now the subject of a new children’s book written by Favel Parrett, who also volunteers at the sanctuary. The book is an entertaining source of information for children, which Kevin says is vital to educating Australians from an early age about dingoes. “That’s really something we’re really working on … especially with something like Wandi’s book, it’s getting to the kids and getting into the schools,” he says. “He has really brought attention to the fact that there are still pure dingoes left here in Victoria, and that it’s important to protect them because they are at threat.” The dingoes are either bred in the sanctuary, or arrive as wild-born rescues. Many people will call the sanctuary when they have found a dingo in need of rescue, however Kevin says it’s important to make sure the dingo or cub actually needs rescuing. “The problem is often … they’re not really orphaned, it might just be that their parents are off hunting … so sometimes dingoes can get taken out of the wild that don’t need to be. “We actually try and encourage people not to take them out and only after observing them and watching them a period of time, even weeks or days … just making sure there’s no parents returning. “Because we don’t want to have to keep taking animals away from their family and away from the area where they should be living if it’s not necessary.” The sanctuary differs from others with its focus on DNA purity, with samples sent to the University of New South Wales for testing. “That’s really important to us; for keeping

that genetic line of pure dingoes that we always have into the future,” Kevin says. “We know they still exist in the wild, they’re still out there in the wild but we want to make sure we’re not going to lose them.” Wandi recently fathered two cubs who are being taken care of at the sanctuary by Kevin and the volunteers. Kevin says Wandi still looks up at the sky to look out for any prey in order to protect his cubs. The cubs, along with two others from another pair of dingoes, will be raised in the sanctuary to get used to people so that when they are older, they will be a good resource for education. There are still many dingoes who will never have the right personality for human interaction and so will eventually be released

back into the wild when they’re ready, according to Kevin. He hopes society will get to a point where there is not so much negative stigma attached to dingoes. He says the bounty was born out of farmers and landowners wanting to protect livestock with negative feelings towards dingoes being “a very ingrained ideology”. “In reality, there’s not a lot of livestock that are taken by predators. It’s a really low number.” Wooleen cattle station in Western Australia is one of very few who allow healthy, stable dingo populations to live on the property. The dingoes help with controlling the rabbit population, scare away kangaroos or feral goats and pigs. Dingoes also don’t hassle cattle

because they’re too big for a dingo to hunt. They also only eat lean meat like rabbits, possums and sometimes fish. They also love insects. “The fact is so many other countries are doing it so much better than we are. They work out different ways to protect livestock from jaguars, lions, coyotes, wolves,” Kevin says. There is now a group, Landholders for Dingoes, who help to educate landowners and farmers about how they can incorporate dingoes into how their stations are run. “It’s about how we can look at co-existing with them rather than trying to wipe them out completely,” Kevin says. Mitsubishi eclipses the electric market

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Mitsubishi is a long-time player in electric power in vehicles - to the extent that I was one of an Australian group that Mitsubishi flew to Japan in 2010 to drive the i-MiEV, its first electric vehicle. We didn’t just go to some sort of fancy high-tech facility, but also got to buy things at a shopping centre and have lunch at a cafe. Both of these locations had EV charging facilities. About a year later we drove the Mitsubishi i-MiEV in Australia when it was launched here. It struggled to get from where we picked it up Brisbane to our home on the Gold Coast, a distance of just under 100km on a single charge. How things have changed in the last 10 years. While electric vehicle ranges have improved most people are still reluctant to buy full-electric vehicles but are increasingly going for hybrid petrol/electric. These come in two types - those that simply have the petrol engine charge the battery and ones that can be plugged in and charged, known as Plug-In Electric Vehicles or PHEVs. Now Mitsubishi has introduced the Eclipse Cross PHEV which joins its larger brother the Outlander that has been on sale here since 2014. It’s expensive. Very expensive. You have to pay $12,500 more for the PHEV compared to the similarly equipped non-PHEV Eclipse Exceed. Eclipse Cross PHEV has a 10 year / 200,000 km warranty on most of the vehicle provided that all servicing is done by Mitsubishi dealerships. Otherwise, the warranty reverts to five years and 100,000 km. The warranty on the EV drive battery is eight years or 160,000 km.

Styling The Eclipse Cross PHEV has the same shape as the rest of the non-PHEV range. Thus, it has the latest iteration of the very large grille that flows neatly into multiple LED lights and back into sides of the bonnet. There’s a flowing coupe-like roofline which gives it an attractive and stylish profile. Badges on the front doors proudly boast that it’s a “Plug-in Hybrid EV”

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Mitsubishi boasts that the Outlander PHEV is the world’s top-selling Plug-In Hybrid with more than 260,000 vehicles sold globally. The petrol engine is able to recharge the battery as well as power the vehicle simultaneously. The drive battery is a 13.8 kWh unit powering front and rear electric drive motors. Interior The interior of the Eclipse Cross has a neat and functional design with most features easily accessible. The instrument panel has carbon and piano black accents as do the steering wheel, centre console and door panels. The lower dash, centre console, arm rests and air vents all have a high finish silver trim.

Safety The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV has a five-star ANCAP safety rating. All models have seven airbags and two rear IsoFix anchors and three top-tether points.

Driving The powertrain provides drivers with the ability to drive solely on electric power around town. At higher speeds or on longer drives, the powertrain will switch to Series or Parallel Hybrid modes to boost the range whilst minimising fuel consumption. When the destination is further afield, the hybrid modes employ the petrol engine to assist the battery or to directly drive the vehicle. As mentioned, the petrol engine is able to recharge the battery as well as power the

vehicle simultaneously. Eclipse Cross is able to accelerate virtually instantly when there’s charge in the battery, a feature of all electric vehicles that we really like. Even when the battery was flat it sometimes picked up a bit of charge when slowing and/or when going down a hill. Fuel consumption is officially listed as just 1.9 litres per hundred kilometres. However, that’s so low because most of the testing is done using the battery. Once it’s running purely on petrol its consumption is about nine to 11 litres per hundred around town, dropping to six to seven in country running. It corners well for what it is and the fast throttle response give the driver even more control when fanging around bends. Okay, that’s not the sort of thing you do in a people moving SUV, but if Dad is out on his own who knows? The cabin is quiet thanks to good sound reduction and, while not sedan-like, it’s not far from it.

Summing up Eclipse Cross is an excellent example of the long experience Mitsubishi has had with electric or partial electric vehicles. It’s not cheap and personally we’d rather save our money and buy a standard hybrid rather than a plugin one.

Infotainment The multimedia system uses the Mitsubishi Smartphone Link Display Audio connectivity system and displayed on an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen at the top of the dashboard. The buttons are large and conveniently positioned for driver access. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility comes standard on all models although they are plug-in rather than wireless. Digital Audio Broadcast is also standard, but we had the too-common problem of it dropping out.

Aloisi positive despite first up loss Western United coach John Aloisi took plenty of positives out of his side’s A-League season opener against Melbourne Victory despite a 1-0 loss. The two teams headed down the freeway to GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night, with a goal in the 76th minute to Victory’s Roderick Miranda proving to be the difference. United players were left frustrated in the 82nd minute when they thought skipper Alessandro Diamanti should have been awarded a penalty. United coach John Aloisi said while he hates losing, there was a lot to take out of the game. “It was very positive from our side, we played well,” he said. “We created some good openings in the first half and we had a couple of good opportunities. “It was disappointing of course that we lost the game, as we didn’t feel like we deserved to lose that. “In the end if we keep on performing like that and improving, the results will come our

way.” Aloisi said he didn’t have a clear view of the no-call on the penalty for Diamanti, but said his players were adamant there should have been one. Ben Garuccio, Dylan Wenzel-Halls, Connor Pain and Aleksandar Prijovic all had chances for United throughout the game. Aloisi said the side’s defensive pressure both individually and as a team was really good, with the likes of Leo Lacroix, Tomoki Imai and Josh Risdon standing out. Aloisi said Lacroix really had a presence in his first game for the club. “We got into certain situations, a situation where we lost the ball in a bad spot,” he said. “Leo just remained calm, controlled that one v one situation and defended it really well. He was able to do that, [and it] gives confidence not only to the back four, but the whole team. “Leo will get better.” Aloisi said while he was happy with a lot

of the game, there were definitely some areas that the team would need to work on. He said once they controlled the ball in the middle of the ground, they were able to find more openings. “The final ball let us down at times, some decision making in the final third let us down,” he said. “That will come the more the team plays together, the more we gel. We created some really good chances. “A set piece, we got underdone by.” Aloisi said the side came through unscathed, with several of the internationals better for the run. International Aleksandar Prijovic started on the bench, while fellow international Rene Krhin is yet to pull on the United jumper after having to quarantine when he got into the country. Tara Murray

Jamieson is on the ball By Peter Howe Mitchell Jamieson has all the raw enthusiasm and just a hint of larrikin in his voice as he chats about his journey growing up in cricket. One thing becomes clear very quickly, his feet are firmly planted on the ground. “I am very grateful for all of the time my coaches have put into developing me as a batter and still put in as I embark on my first Premier Cricket season with Footscray. “Right from my first training session the senior players got around me and made me feel very welcome. “Their advice and support has assisted me to transition from my junior club, Keilor into senior cricket.” Jamieson’s father grew up playing both cricket and football and Jamieson followed in his footsteps, while his mum and two sisters also play cricket. The 16-year-old decided to play cricket because it’s a team game and he loved being around his mates. One of Mitchell’s biggest buzzes was to play in the same team as his father and getting to bat with him in the game. “I started playing in the under-10s at Keilor Cricket Club aged five. I moved to the under-12s aged seven and made my highest

score of 38 that stood for a few years.” Jamieson moved quickly through the club ranks at Keilor and is the youngest player to play in the club’s first XI. He made his debut in junior representative sides in under-12s. Jamieson would soon find himself in the region representative side, Western Spirit for under-14s and under-16s. From there he was selected in the Cricket Victoria under-15 metro team for the national championships. After a standout performance, which included a century, he was selected in the Cricket Australia under-16 team. Jamieson was selected to represent Victoria metro once again as a bottom age player in the under-17s. He is currently in the Cricket Victoria under-17 emerging players program and is looking forward to representing Vic Metro in January. “From my earliest coaching in cricket I learned that what works best for me is to keep things simple,” he said. “It is critical not to overly complicate things, which is fine when you are traveling OK. “It’s when you start to drop catches, make ducks, or lose finals that you start to question your ability. I had a run of outs last year before Christmas playing for Keilor, then had a long

talk to my coach Duncan Harrison, who told me to back myself. Jamieson is a student at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy on a cricket scholarship. Jamieson has had leadership potential written all over him through his junior career and capped it off by captaining Footscray in the Victorian Premier Cricket under-16 competition, The Dowling Shield. “I have enjoyed my opportunities to lead teams. I look to involve others; I look after younger players and make sure they feel part of the team. I understand I need to be a role model. I do have a steady head under pressure. However, above all it is necessary to have fun when we come together to play.” Jamieson wants to continue to build on his strengths as a young emerging player. His ultimate dream is the Baggy Green and a place in the Australian team. Jamieson is the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club, November Don Deeble Sports Star Award winner. An exciting Western Jets group is set to take to the field in the NAB League Girl’s competition next year. With most of the group from last season returning and a number of younger players getting their opportunity, coach Robbie Chancellor is excited. “We had a very young side last season and didn’t have many top age girls,” he said. “A lot of them were 16-year-olds and the experience will hold them in good stead. “We have some pretty special top age talent.” The group started pre-season a couple of weeks ago, with Chancellor saying that everyone had been super keen to get back around the group. Chancellor said it had been easier this time round, his second year in the job. “A lot of the group has come from last season and it makes it easier. “There’s been a lot of banter and so much enjoyment. The last couple of years have been so tough to do things, so being able to see your friends and be back at the Jets has been good.” In a change, the Jets season will get under way in January. Chancellor said being at their best in round one isn’t the be all and end all, with the program’s heavy focus on the development of players to play at the higher level. He said they expected to see a number of players put their hands up for the AFLW draft later next year. Montana Ham and Charlotte Baskaran are leading the pack, with both starring last season. “There are some really exciting prospects,” he said. “There’s a certain group with some consistent training, it will give them the opportunity to look at that next level. “Montana and Charlotte it will be their last year with us, even though they can play another season. “Jemima Woods, Caitlin Sargent, Trinity Skenderis and Stephanie Asciak all played some VFL last year. “There’s great talent coming through in the west.” Tara Murray

Williamstown lifesavers return to competition Lifesaving sports are officially back on, with Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club (S&LC) athletes back on the beach competing in beach, board and ski and surf boat disciplines for the first time since COVID-19 halted the sport. Over the weekend of November 13 and 14, over 200 board, ski and distance running athletes hit Cosy Corner on the Surf Coast for the 2021 endurance championships, which saw athletes compete in long-course board, ski, swimming and running events. Victorian Surf Rowers League (VSRL) competitors’ also returned to the shores as the sport returned to the surf at Lorne Surf Life Saving Club. Mahli McCarroll from Williamstown S&LC took out second place in the Cosy Corner Endurance Championships under-12 girls’ one-kilometre swim and two-kilometre board race, and came first place in the under-12 girls’ two-kilometre run. Overall the club came ninth with 38 points in total. Over in Lorne, the Williamstown Wobbegongs came third in the VSRL Men’s B final boat race, while the Williamstown Witches placed fourth in the Women’s A final. Life Saving Victoria (LSV) manager Simon Butterly said he was thrilled to host

so many athletes in the first weekend back of aquatic sports after such a long break due to lockdowns. “It was fantastic to see athletes from the under-12 division all the way up to masters at our beach carnival and endurance championships, as LSV is working to actively promote aquatic sports as a great form of active training across all demographics,” he said. “Sport is also an important part of our lifesavers’ connection to their communities, which are always there to support them in their training and competition activities. “With a fully vaccinated workforce and volunteer force for those aged 16-plus, I look forward to safely hosting our aquatic sports carnivals for the summer season, after a successful opening weekend.”

Bowling a bright future By Molly Magennis From struggling to field two senior teams to now having four men’s teams and a women’s, the Williamstown CYMS cricket club’s strong focus on community has helped them grow exponentially as they head into the 2021-22 season. Coach Brad Robertson said that the Williamstown CYMS sporting club as a whole has really developed over the past few years, and the strong community the football club in particular has created was something that the cricket club wanted to emulate. “The football club in particular has gone from strength to strength in the last sort of five to ten years,” he said. The cricket club kind of wanted to emulate that in a way I suppose and just create a really healthy community club for the summer as well as the winter.” Robertson said the leadership figures within

the club put a specific plan in place several years ago determining what kind of direction the club wanted to head in. “They’ve kind of remained pretty true and pretty strong with that direction and [we’re] probably starting to see some pay off just with the numbers,” he said. “The numbers at training and the numbers playing on a weekend have been healthy, which from our point of view is the goal. It’s the number one goal of the club.” Looking ahead to the upcoming season, while success on the field would be nice, player development and a focus on individual growth is the club’s main priority. “[We want to] keep investing time into the development of each individual player, not just as a cricketer but as a person, as a young man,” Robertson said. “Success, premierships, wins, all that sport of stuff, they’re gonna be happy by-products of what our real goal is.”

Kieren Gray, former captain-coach of the Aberfeldie senior division, is a welcome new addition to men’s first XI. “He’s come on as assistant coach and will provide a lot of experience and leadership and hopefully some runs as well,” Robertson said. Most importantly Robertson said he is looking forward to getting supporters back down to the club. “We get lots of messages from the faithful supporters asking when they’re gonna be allowed to come down and watch, when the bars are gonna be open, and are they able to come down and watch training,” he said. “The social side of things is really important to the club, probably almost as important as the on field stuff. So we are really looking forward to get that sort of stuff back.” The CY’s are set to take on Royal Park-Brunswick this Saturday at Ransford oval.

As Williamstown’s men’s and women’s teams gear up for Victorian Football League 2022 season, both programs have received good news with the re-signings of four key players. Forward Nick Ebinger and ruckman Tom Downie will make a return, with Ebinger looking to have more of an impact in 2022 after having only played just four games this year. Despite this the 24-year-old still managed to kick 10 goals, proving he is a crucial part of the Seagulls forward line. Downie averaged 35 hit-outs per game in six matches this year, and the 203 centimetre ex-Greater Western Sydney player is expected to continue to add experience to the team next season. They join Charlie Dean, Noah Gown, Billy Myers and Darby Henderson, Joel Ottavi, Lachlan Stapleton, Liam Hunt, Jordan Gallucci, Teia Miles, Kallan Dawson, Jack Toner, Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds and Cam Polson are among the other re-signings. Sasha Long managed 12 VFLW games this year, and 2022 will mark Long’s third season at the Seagulls after debuting in 2019. After debuting for the club this year, Sofi Georgas will also be sticking around to help the VFLW team next season. The Seagulls VFL will look to replicate the success they had in the 2021 season, where they made it into the top eight, before the COVID lockdown cut the season short. The Seagulls managed to win six games and were considered major contenders to take out the premiership The Seagulls VFLW will hope to see greater success in their 2022 campaign, after finishing second last on the ladder this year with only two wins and 11 losses.
