Victoria University is helping revive native wildflowers in Melbourne’s west by planting more than 2000 seedlings at its St Albans Campus – one for every year 12 student accepted into its early-entry VU Guaranteed program. Launched in 2018, the program allows year 11 and 12 students at more than 130 partner schools in Melbourne’s west and regional Victoria to obtain a guaranteed place at VU or VU Polytechnic before they complete their final year 12 exams. This project brings together VU’s Future Students team with the Iramoo Grassland Centre and Nursery and VU’s Moondani Balluk centre for Indigenous staff and students. A seed library, also part of the project, will assist Iramoo Nursery to propagate and preserve these native wildflower species. Student Isabelle Day said for her and many other students, the project feels personal. “Being able to see your university encapsulate a shared vision for change in our climate condition and promote a better future for my generation of students and the world is inspiring.”
Drive on for better buses By Tara Murray Melbourne Airport and public transport advocates are calling for more direct and frequent buses, with extended operating hours, between Sunshine and the airport to better meet the needs of shift workers. Currently, there is no direct bus service between Sunshine and the airport. Victorian Transport Action Group’s ‘Service Step Ups for Sunshine’ report, calls for a bus shuttle between Sunshine and the airport, every 15 to 20 minutes, seven days a week, with long hours and limited stops. Public Transport Users Association
spokesperson Daniel Bowen said public transport between the airport and Sunshine had been an issue for a long time. “There have been improvements from the east coming from Broadmeadows and Epping and it has helped a lot in those areas. [But] a lot of other nearby suburbs, operating hours and frequency are quite poor,” he said. “There’s a large number of people who work at the airport and at present only have the option to drive and it adds to the traffic congestion. Households have another car in the driveway.” Mr Bowen said it made sense for the state government to fund extra bus services and
longer hours to give people more options. He said long term, the Melbourne Airport rail link would help people in Sunshine, but many people in suburbs closer to the airport wouldn’t benefit. Melbourne Airport’s chief of ground transport, Jai McDermott, said the airport is interested in understanding opportunities to expand the service levels and network coverage of PTV buses to better match the airport’s operating environment. “The frequency and hours of operation of most existing bus services (excluding the 901 SmartBus) could be improved by increasing the frequency and expanding the service
time-spans to better accommodate the needs of shift workers,” he said. “Improving connectivity to nearby residential areas and activity centres, with reasonable levels of service on the routes, would help improve travel options for passengers and employees travelling from areas such as Brimbank or Hume.” A Department of Transport spokesperson said the department continually worked with the community to ensure the public transport network is more accessible and better connected. Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll was contacted for comment.

Lawyer aires asbestos concerns By Sarah Oliver A lawyer who specialises in asbestos-related personal injury law has voiced her concerns about a bid to dispose of asbestos at a site in Ravenhall. As reported by Star Weekly, Cleanaway wants to accept asbestos at the Melbourne Regional Landfill in Ravenhall. The company is seeking approval from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to amend its licence to permit the receival and disposal of asbestos waste at the site. The proposal has been met with concern from Brimbank and Melton councils. Gordon Legal director Victoria Keays has also raised concerns about the proposal,

- Victoria Keays saying the west has been an area of Melbourne particularly affected by asbestos in the past. “One of the things that strikes me about this is that the western suburbs of Melbourne have a really sad history with asbestos,” Ms Keays said. Ms Keays’ biggest concern with the application to dump asbestos is not only its dangers to the current community, but to the
future population in Ravenhall. “It is a growth corridor and even if the current towns or suburbs are a kilometre away, that’s not likely to be the case forever,” she said. “Looking at the map, it’s close to the prisons. And I think these things, proximity to communities including prisons, is something that I would hope would be taken into account in this application.” This month is asbestos awareness month which Ms Keays said makes this application at Ravenhall “really timely”. “One of the issues about asbestos awareness is that people aren’t aware, they think this is something that is a problem from a long time ago.
“But we’ve all just got to be really vigilant about exposure because small exposure can cause mesothelioma which has really grave consequences for people and their families.” Mesothelioma is a rare but extremely violent cancer which asbestos can be the cause of. It happens when asbestos that has been destroyed or dumped incorrectly causes dust to be released which contains fibres that are too large for human lungs to handle. “I think one of the misconceptions about asbestos is that it is yesterday’s problem,” Ms Keays said. “But as we can see from this example, there is still a lot of asbestos in the community and there are still issues about asbestos.”

Students pen prize book in one day A story of love and a lost engagement ring by a group of Caroline Chisholm Catholic College students has claimed one of the major prizes in the Write a Book In a Day competition. Three groups of students from the college entered the competition, with the students having 12 hours to write and illustrate a book. There were 1252 teams from more than 570 schools, with a group from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College winning best illustrated
book in the upper school category for their book ‘Shiny Shenanigans’. English teacher Taylor Martyn said the winning group was shocked to claim the prize. She said the work done to illustrate the book on Ipads was amazing. “It is pretty amazing,” she said. “We have done it in the past, we did it two years ago. This year we asked for volunteers and we were able to have three teams. “They had 12 hours to write and illustrate the book. On the day they were also given five
parameters.” The winning group’s book is about Barry who wants to propose to his boyfriend at the Sydney Opera House. A mischievous magpie ruins those plans and sends Barry on a hunt to retrieve an engagement ring. As part of the competition schools also raised money for child cancer funding, with the college raising more than $1000.
An outdoor community lounge at Keilor library is one step closer, with the final plans being approved. The lounge, which will be built on vacant parkland adjacent to the library, will increase the space of the library by one-third. The lounge will be used by visitors for study, relaxation, reading and holding outdoor events. After community consultation, several changes have been made to the plans. The changes include increased shade areas, ramps and surfaces to improve accessibility, storage for outdoor furniture and an increase in the number of study tables. At this stage there are no plans to extend operating hours with the introduction of the new area. Construction is set to get under way early next year. Brimbank council has contributed $100,000 to the library upgrades, with the council also receiving state government funding through the Living Libraries Infrastructure program. The council first proposed the lounge in 2014, but it has twice been delayed due to budget constraints. There has been some community concern about the space. Councillor Ranka Rasic said the council had listened to the community. “The new outdoor lounge will enhance the current library offering to the community, delivering on outcomes that will benefit all of Brimbank,” she said. “It will provide flexible learning, recreation and play spaces that support a range of activities and multiple seating, study, creative play, recreation and reading areas.” Tara Murray

Call for patience as Brimbank storm clean up continues Clean up work continues in Brimbank following storms three weeks ago. Brimbank council received more than 1300 requests from community members alerting them to storm damage on public property from the storms on October 29. There was a number of private properties damaged, including the Deer Park Club, with the Brimbank SES receiving 157 request calls following those storms. Wet weather since hasn’t helped, with some local rivers and roads flooding last weekend
due to heavy rain. More rain was predicted on the weekend. Council staff have been working after hours and on weekends to clean up the damage and attend to all of the requests they have received. All high risk requests have now been fixed or made safe, and about half of all requests have been actioned. Council’s maintenance crews are also in the midst of the peak period for parks maintenance, particularly grass mowing. The wet weather has encouraged grass growth.
The council’s efforts to clean up the municipality have also been slowed down by staff impacted by COVID-19 restrictions and isolation requirements. Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said it had been a busy period for council staff. “Brimbank was significantly impacted by the extreme weather on October 29, and the work to clean this up is during an already busy time for parks maintenance over spring,” she said. “We really appreciate the community’s
patience as our maintenance and parks staff have been working around the clock to attend to the most urgent matters during this challenging period.” For urgent matters, residents can contact the council on 9249 4000, and these will be prioritised as they come through. Brimbank elects Cr Jasmine Nguyen as new Mayor Cr Jasmine Nguyen will lead the municipality for the next 12 months after being elected by her fellow Councillors at a special Council Meeting on Wednesday 17 November that was livestreamed to the public. This is Cr Nguyen's first time as Mayor and also her first time as a Brimbank Councillor after being sworn in for a four-year term on Tuesday 10 November 2020. At the same meeting, Cr Thuy Dang was elected Deputy Mayor of Brimbank. Social housing demand grows More than 4000 people are waiting for social housing in Brimbank and Melton, according to new data. The state government recently released data about the number of Victorians waiting for social housing. The west division of the list – which includes Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Brimbank and Greater Geelong – has the highest number of applicants in the state, with 17,045 submissions during the September quarter. There were 16,467 people were waiting on social housing in the region during the June quarter. The Brimbank and Melton office, which is

based in Sunshine, has 4073 people are on the waiting list. Of those 1875 are listed as needing “priority access” to a new home, including existing tenants who require relocation due to their current property being unsafe due to a reason such as family violence. Opposition spokesperson for housing, Ryan Smith, said almost 53,000 Victorians are waiting
for social housing. Community Information and Support Victoria (CISVic) – a peak body representing 55 local services that deliver emergency relief, information, support and referrals to people in need – has launched a campaign calling on the state government to build 7000 new social and public housing properties per year, across the next decade. CISVic executive officer Kate Wheller said: “Our member agencies are being overwhelmed by people who are homeless or about to lose their home”. “There is just not enough affordable housing for everyone. We need to have a real,
commitment to fix this problem once and for all.” The state government is currently building social housing in Brimbank and Melton as part of the Big Housing Build. The Big Housing Build will provide more than 12,000 new homes across the state, creating 10,000 jobs a year and boosting social housing stocks by 10 per cent. There are three locations in Brimbank – Cairnlea, St Albans and Sydenham. A spokesperson said the state government was working with community housing organisations, councils and community agencies to unlock land and increase the capacity of social housing providers.
The spirit of Christmas An appeal for food and gifts to help those struggling has been set up by a couple of Brimbank residents to support the Sunshine Salvation Army. For a second year, Jamie Ramsay and Duyen Anh Pham have decided to run the appeal to help those in need. “Speaking with [Sunshine Salvation Army captain] Colin [Reynolds], they have not seen a drop in the required services needed,” Mr Ramsay said. “There’s still a lot of support required. Brimbank already had high unemployment before COVID-19. “I grew up in an environment where a few times food was provided from hampers or vouchers when I was younger. “I’m now in a position where I’m fortunate to give back.” The pair are aiming to collect perishable
food and gifts in line with the Salvation Army Appeal list. Items can be dropped off DA Place cafe in Sunshine North or Cafe U & I in St Albans by December 15. “Donations are greatly appreciated and 100 per cent of the items donated will go to the Sunshine Salvos to support local people,” Mr Ramsay said. Vaccine rates rise The vaccine rate in Brimbank continues to rise according to the latest data. The figures released by the federal government on Monday, showed that 84.4 per cent of Brimbank residents aged 15 and older have received both vaccine doses. That’s an increase of 3.6 per cent in the past week. There was a slight increase in the first dose in Brimbank, with 91.7 per cent of residents 15 and older now having received their first dose. It was an increase 0.6 per cent on the previous week.

Renowned Brimbank artist Saidin Salkic is launching his latest exhibition in Sunshine North this week. The exhibition, Human Angst and Joy, contains some of the work Salkic has done throughout the pandemic. As well as launching the exhibition, he will run a question and answer session to discuss important issues that are happening in the community. Salkic said that he decided to launch the exhibition in a cafe as a way of attracting more people to come down. The works will stay there for at least 10 days,
A Sunshine West house was damanged by fire on Wednesday last week. Fire Rescue Victoria crews attended the Dinnell Street property about 9.30am following a number of calls to triple-0. Callers reported the top level of the two-storey brick and weatherboard home was fully alight. The owners were not a home at the time. The fire was declared under control about 40 minutes after firefighters arrived. Crews also attended a house fire in Chittenup Bend, Sydenham, on the same morning. Firefighters arrived on scene to find the single-storey brick home fully involved in fire. The two occupants, with their two dogs, managed to safely self-evacuate the burning house due to a working smoke alarm alerting them.

Hunt for Sunshine North shooter By Tara Murray Homicide Squad detectives have released the images of two men they’re looking to identify as part of their investigation into the death of Chris Habiyakare in Sunshine North earlier this year. Mr Habiyakare was at his Essex Street home on August 24 with five friends. About 8.30pm, Mr Habiyakare answered a knock on the door from a group of males and a confrontation occurred. smashing a window to get out. A physical altercation allegedly took place with the armed group and Mr Habiyakare was shot.
The group has then left the property and it’s believed they left the area in at least one vehicle. Mr Habiyakare died at the scene. No one else was physically injured during the incident. Investigators believe this was a targeted incident, however the exact motive for the shooting is still to be determined. It was the second time in the space of a week police had attended the property. Police are keen to speak to anyone who might know the men pictured in the images and are also appealing for the men themselves to come forward. Detective Inspector Tim Day said they are also keen to speak to anyone else who may have knowledge of the incidents or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
“Over the past few months the Homicide Squad has conducted a significant investigation which has led to us being able to put these images together and release them today. “I believe there are people out there who can identify those involved in Chris’ death. It’s time for those people to do the right thing and come forward. “At this time, we have a group of people out there who we believe are still in possession of the firearm.” Mr Day said Mr Habiyakare was known to police and had a history of involvement with drugs. Night market to kick off Shoppers will hopefully be out in force at a Keilor night market being held next week. The Village Night Market is the brainchild of local businesswomen, Lone Star Trading Co’s Prue Houston and Pair it Up Pegs’ Jodie Robinson, who wanted somewhere for local businesses to showcase their work. The pandemic and lockdown meant the first market was postponed from September 1 to December 1. Ms Houston said they were excited to finally be able to host their first market after having to postpone it several times. “It got to the start of October and we saw the roadmap and decided to push the first one back to December,” she said. “We thought it would give us a nice clean break away from lockdowns. It’s a bit surreal that it will finally be happening.”
Ms Houston said the reaction to the market had been massive, with the pair having a long list of businesses keen to get involved. The first market will contain 30 stalls, including clothes for all ages, food, candles, natural products and educational businesses. There will be food and coffee available on the night. “It’s a good cross reference of people in the community,” she said. “It’s good chance to do some early Christmas shopping.” Ms Houston said they would see how this market went before planning dates for future markets, but were planning to have regular markets next year. Push for Cairnlea sports space Tara Murray Residents’ requests that a multi-purpose sports facility be built as part of a new development in Cairnlea will be passed onto Development Victoria. As reported by Star Weekly, a group of residents is calling for a planned development of the former Albion Explosives Site to not be signed off until further consultation and investigations are held. Residents and Brimbank council have expressed concerns over the planned development of the 41-hectare site on Ballarat Road, which has been set aside to create a new
residential neighbourhood. Brimbank council has been informed that Development Victoria has requested that Planning Minister Richard Wynne becomes the planning and responsible authority for the development and Amendment C222 to the Brimbank Planning Scheme. Councillor Victoria Borg raised a notice of motion at Tuesday night’s council meeting, which was supported, calling on the council to write to Development Victoria advising that the council has received requests from Cairnlea residents that a multi-purpose sports facility be included at the proposed development.
Currently the proposal includes two soccer pitches, which will only be available for public use 25 per cent of the time. “This proposal has created a lot of dissatisfaction and anger amongst the community, there is a strong need for a diversity in sports facilities” she said. “There are already two soccer pitches just one kilometre east from the proposal site. In addition, it can be argued there is also an issue of equity and access with regards to soccer. “Soccer is an expensive sport and not financially viable to many members of the community, soccer is also limited to a particular cohort of the population.
“There is obviously a need for multi multi-sport facility that caters for various ages. “Research shows there are low rates of physical activity in Brimbank and a multi-purpose sports facility at Cairnlea will provide opportunities for members of the community to engage themselves in healthy activities, rather going to the pokies venue which is located within walking distance of the site.” Cr Sarah Branton and Cr Virginia Tachos, who both supported Cr Borg’s comments, said the community had been consistent in their calls for the sports facility to cater for everyone.

Two senior achievers recognised Burnside’s Veronica Hassing and Sunshine North’s Thoa Tran have been recognised in the Victorian Senior of the Year awards. Ms Hessing won the veteran community award, after being nominated by Melton council. The 85-year-old has been a passionate contributor to her community through volunteering with Carers Victoria, the Smith Family, the Court Network, the RSL, Anzac Day appeal and helping to organise her local community fete. Last year during the lockdown, Ms Hassing turned her garage into a pop-up poppy stall and raised $1000 for RSL welfare work.
Ms Hassing said her first reaction to hearing she had won the award was “what have I done?” “Because I do things and I don’t look for praise, I do it because I want to and I can see the need, and I’ll always be the same.” Ms Tran was recognised as one of the winners of the COTA senior achiever awards. Ms Tran is an active member of Australian Vietnamese Arts Incorporation (AVA) and has performed traditional dances at numerous cultural festivals. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms Tran found new ways to stay connected and give back through sewing. Ms Tran joined Rona Scrubs, a group of
volunteers making scrubs for people on the pandemic front line and produced more than 500 sets of uniforms for nurses and doctors. During the pandemic, Ms Tran has also taught hand crafts to aged care residents in-person and remotely, and shared important wellbeing and COVID-19 vaccination information by producing two Vietnamese language videos. Recently Ms Tran has also volunteered at the IPC Health vaccination clinic in Melton to support people receiving their COVID-19 vaccine. Tara Murray
Works on upgrades to the Taylors Road and Westwood Drive intersection in Taylors Hill are set to get under way next year. The intersection, which is one of the busiest in the Melton municipality, will go from a roundabout to being signalised. It’s hoped the changes will improve the flow of traffic. The plans, which are out for community consultation, include a road expansion, new pedestrian crossings, public lighting, landscaping and relocation of underground services. The $5.3 million project was funded in the 2021-22 Melton council budget. The works are set to be finished in 2023. The works are set to take between six and 12 months to complete, with most of the work to occur during work hours. There will be lane closures at times and changes to bus time tables when the works get under way, while access to the Westvale Shopping Centre will be available at all times. It was one of three upgrades along Taylors Road announced in this year’s budget. More than $3.1 million has been allocated for signalisation of the Taylors and Plumpton roads intersection, and $3.38 million for the Taylors and Sinclair roads intersection both in Deanside. $440,000 lost per day to electronic gaming in Brimbank Gambling harm remains one of the most depressing issues in Brimbank, according to a Brimbank councillor. The council released its community report card into its electronic gambling policy at last week’s council meeting, highlighting the work the council has done to try and reduce gambling. While the council has implemented a number of key strategies, the municipality remains at the top of the table for pokie spend. “Recent trends highlight the risks to vulnerable groups in Brimbank,” councillor Ranka Rasic said. “Following a period of closure due to
COVID-19 health restrictions in 2020, spending on [electronic gaming machine’s] surged to record levels in 2021. “In Brimbank, $92 million was lost in just over seven months at a rate of more than $440,000 per day, an increase of 15 per cent over the previous year. “Spending on wagering and sports betting has also been increasing in Victoria for the past decade, with losses growing significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Cr Rasic said these trends were particularly concerning as Brimbank continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, with unemployment and reliance on income

support increasing in Brimbank. She highlighted a number of programs run by the council including a number of gambling harm reduction programs, with support from the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation. The ‘Invest in You’ project was launched in September 2021, and has worked with several local communities to co-design gambling harm awareness resources. The ‘Libraries After Dark’ program encompasses a range of activities that provide safe and affordable alternatives to gambling. The council has also worked with the St Albans Sports Club to develop a first0ever gambling
harm reduction program, implemented as part of the club’s lease agreement. Cr Virginia Tachos said gambling was one of the most depressing issues the local community is facing. She said a recent forum run by the council on gambling harm with someone who shared his experience had been very helpful. Cr Sam David said there has to be other ways to try and stop the harm that is being caused. “We’re not proud of it.” Meanwhile, the council supports calls to ban gambling advertising including for new products such as SportsBet’s ‘Bet with Mates’ product.

Mr Allayhari was in the same situation when he arrived in Australia. “In my country Iran, I was a chef,” he said. “We had one week to leave the country and we didn’t even say goodbye to my family. It was easiest to come by boat, as we couldn’t get a visa. “Coming to Australia wasn’t an easy decision. I lived in a detention centre when I came out here.” Mr Allayhari finally settled in Melbourne. It would be two years before he was allowed to work or study, and even when he was allowed to work he couldn’t find a job.

He said receiving knockback after knockback was really tough. “They would say leave your CV and we will get in contact with you,” he said. “I didn’t give up, but a lot of people would as it’s the easy thing to do, not working and get government support instead. “They don’t feel part of the community and a couple of years later they become depressed.” Mr Allayhari started to volunteer at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Footscray, cooking meals twice a week. His food, Persian, was a hit and he would form the dream of owning his own place in Melbourne. He would find a job at Free to Feed, a pop-up cooking school where all classes are run by asylum seekers and refugees. It would then lead to him starting Cafe Sunshine & SalamaTea. SalamaTea is a not-for-profit social enterprise cafe that runs regular barista training courses to help incoming residents improve their language skills and find employment in Australia. Mr Allayhari has run 20-plus cooking classes, sharing his story to more than 2500 people, and runs barista courses twice a year while providing external English classes for his employees.

Brimbank’s youngest ever mayor Jasmine Nguyen made history when she was elected as Brimbank council’s mayor last Wednesday, becoming the city’s youngest ever mayor She secured the council’s top job following a tight contest with councillors Virginia Tachos and Sam David. Speaking on Friday, Cr Nguyen said she was still pinching herself. “It’s such a privilege and I’m so happy. I didn’t think I was going to be a councillor let alone a mayor,” she said. “Becoming a councillor opened up my eyes and encouraged me to step up even more.” Cr Nguyen, who has a background in marketing, first put her hand up to run for council to provide a voice for the young people in the area. She said many young people had struggled through lockdown and felt like they didn’t have a voice. “A lot of people were having a hard time and were trying to finish studying, trying to find jobs or trying to stay in jobs. “I looked at the council and thought there
needs to be more youth.” Cr Nguyen’s heritage also plays a major part in her life. She is the first Vietnamese mayor of Brimbank. “I was involved in the Dual Identify Leadership Program in 2017 and I then wanted to help the program grow more. “The program was about wanting to help second generation Vietnamese people connect with their heritage. “I contribute my success to the DILP and the Vietnamese community. People walked, so we could run.” Cr Nguyen said after another year of lockdowns, leading the council and the community out of the pandemic was one of her main aims the next 12 months. She said whether it was through her work, volunteering or council, she wanted to have a purpose and help bridge the gap. “I don’t just want to be a voice for young people,” she said. “There’s unemployment and we need more mental health support in the municipality. There’s a report in mental health services due next year.
“Climate change is something I’m passionate about. “Next year is an election year I want to make sure we advocate for services and infrastructure for the community in all wards. “Brimbank deserves it. We are a multicultural community and the second most disadvantaged, our community needs it.” Cr Nguyen said inspiring young people to take opportunities and risks was something she wanted others to take from her time as mayor. She said it’s about being a team and supporting others where they need it. “It is such an honour to be mayor 100 per cent want to put my heart and soul into it “I want to help Brimbank bounce back.” Cr Thuy Dang was named deputy mayor.

TAC and council to work together Brimbank council will continue to engage with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) around potential opportunities to help make the Calder Freeway safer. Former Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic recently met with TAC chief Joe Calafiore and TAC head of road safety Samantha Cockfield to discuss road safety priorities for Brimbank and Victoria. The discussions centred around road safety priorities such as the common interest in pushing towards a zero road toll, and the council’s ongoing work to fix the Calder Freeway, which has been identified as one of Victoria’s most dangerous roads. Brimbank’s Fix the Calder campaign calls on the state and federal governments to invest in
major upgrades that will improve safety on the Calder, reduce congestion and provide better access and connections to cater for population and freight growth. The governments have committed $50 million to the project, with planning for a new diamond interchange at the Calder Freeway at Calder Park Drive already under way. The state government has also pledged to remove the Calder Park Drive level crossing. The council though is calling for significantly more funding that will be required to help achieve the full scope of works needed. The TAC also briefed the council on its current strategic priorities such as the Victorian road safety strategy 2021-2030 and the Towards
Zero 2016-2020 road safety strategy, as well as on other road safety matters, programs and initiatives for the Brimbank area. Cr Ranka Rasic said the council will look to work with the TAC in any way it can. “I’m pleased to have had productive discussions with the Transport Accident Commission, including an opportunity to update the TAC on council’s ongoing drive to fix the Calder Freeway, and to learn more of its strategies to improve road safety,” she said. “I’m pleased to say TAC was supportive of our call to ‘Fix the Calder’ and council will continue to engage with the TAC around potential opportunities to help make this stretch of road safer.”

Plans for shared paths progress Preliminary studies are being undertaken into a proposed new shared user path from Melton Highway to Robertson’s Road in Taylors Lakes. The proposed works include building new footpaths, tree planting and landscaping, park benches, bins and basic park facilities. The future infrastructure will activate the public area and make walking and cycling a more attractive and safe choice for local residents. Brimbank council is currently undertaking a flora and fauna assessment of the area and studying any potential impacts on the environment. Following this process, the council will assess future costs and plans for constructing footpaths and greening the empty land. Any potential works will be considered as part of a future budget process and if approved works are anticipated to start in the 2022-2023 financial year. Councillor Ranka Rasic said this is an exciting opportunity for the council to utilise vacant land and provide much-needed usable green space for recreational purposes. “In December 2020, I raised a notice of motion to start this process, as I’m keen to see more usable green open spaces in our local communities. “I’m pleased with the progress of this project, and the council taking the first steps at a longer term vision for the future use of this area. “I look forward to continuing engagement with the community and other stakeholders as we work toward achieving a greater outcome for the community, and creating a greener, better Brimbank.”

Summer lessons A school holiday swimming program will continue for at least another two years. Community Sport Minister Ros Spence visited Sunshine Leisure Centre on Monday to announce $800,000 in funding for the VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program to continue for the next two years. The program is held over the first three weeks of January, with each week consisting of five consecutive 30-minute lessons from Monday to Friday. A record 16,141 children took part in the program last summer at 167 venues across Victoria . Sunshine Leisure Centre facilities operations manager Arron Holman said the program was really popular amongst families in Brimbank. “There are still too many kids drowning – which is why our continued investment in VICSWIM is so important. “We’re making it easier for families to access the VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program no matter where they live or their circumstances – so more Victorian kids can learn to swim safely.”

Council calls for more support By Tara Murray Brimbank council is seeking further financial support from the state government to help small businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. At last Tuesday night’s council meeting, former mayor Ranka Rasic raised a notice of motion to ask the state government government to allocate $300,000 in funding to help with the council’s ongoing program of economic recovery through the Brimbank COVID business recovery grants. Cr Rasic said as a small business owner
herself, she knows how hard it has been for small businesses in Brimbank. She said the state and federal governments had provided considerable support, but more was needed. “Brimbank businesses have suffered significant losses through the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said at the council meeting. “In a recent survey more than 70 per cent of business respondents highlighted revenue losses contributed to by the COVID-19 pandemic. “There is a significant need for the government to provide continuing support to
small businesses to help them recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly to encourage them to develop their business and adapt to digital technology. “[The] economic impact of COVID-19 will extend beyond 2020 and [20]21. Council seeks for the state government to continue to support … The business grants program for another 12 months to further support ongoing recovery of business.” Cr Rasic said the extra funding would help deliver economic and social recovery and help more local residents gain or stay in employment.
Cr Trung Luu said he supported the motion, but had been hoping that the council would seek more than $300,000 for the program. “No doubt grants and support has been a great help, but moving forward we need assistance.” The council has run the grants program the past two years, with a total of $300,000 available in the latest round. Grants have been available for start-up micro businesses to assist with fees, registrations and equipment along with small business support grants and small business booster grants. Last year more than 120 grants were awarded.
Christmas fundraiser Caroline Springs Scout group is back for in-person action and gearing up for Christmas. For the third year, the group is selling Christmas trees from their centre in Burnside Heights and delivering to surrounding areas over the first two weekends of December. Selling trees is one of the Scout’s major fundraising events, with stock quickly sold out last year. Tree prices range between $55 and $75 depending on size and funds raised will go towards the Scout centre’s yard. Event organiser Sarah Prentice said the area is “a bit bare” at the moment. “To make it sun smart and accessible for all-abilities we are fundraising for an outdoor area with shading, decking and fire pit plus equipment and activities.” The centre was closed during lockdowns, with Scouts meeting via Zoom for weekly programs.
With restrictions eased, the group have returned to face-to-face activities this week and are “very excited” to be back. “The youth just want to get back together and have fun,” Ms Prentice said. Dingoes find a safe sanctuary Nestled on the side of a hill, down a dirt road and overlooking the incredible Macedon Ranges sits a 40-hectare sanctuary for a group of 43 dingoes and four dingo cubs. Sarah Oliver visited the Toolern Vale sanctuary to find out more about its work and the dingoes it cares for.

he Dingo Discovery Sanctuary, Research and Education Centre is the only one of its kind in the world, and it aims to preserve and conserve the gene pool of the original dingo, educate the public, facilitate non-invasive research and participate in rehabilitation. Sanctuary supervisor and zoologist, Kevin Newman, says they’re working towards finding a way for dingoes and people to exist together. “There’s still a lot of anti-dingo sentiment which is what we as an organisation are trying to counteract,” Kevin says. Although there are some areas where dingoes are protected in the wild, Victoria still has a bounty on dingoes who venture into private land. This means any landowner can hunt and kill a dingo if it’s on or within three kilometres of their property, continuing the classification of the dingo as ‘threatened’ under the flora and fauna guarantee act 1988.

“Realistically, humans are the biggest danger to dingoes more than anything else,” Kevin says. “If they’re treated right and they’re raised right, or if you just leave them alone in the wild, they’re extremely wonderful animals. “More people get injured by domestic dogs in their own house than ever will get injured from a dingo.” The dingoes live in pairs in the sanctuary with life-long partners monogamously, and act more like cats than people realise. “They’re more like a cat in a dog suit,” Kevin says. The sanctuary houses all three breeds of dingoes – alpine, desert and tropical – with the focus mainly on the most at risk: alpines. One such alpine dingo is the famous Wandi who was found after being dropped in someone’s backyard, most likely by a bird of prey, and is now the subject of a new children’s book written by Favel Parrett, who also volunteers at the sanctuary. The book is an entertaining source of information for children, which Kevin says is vital to educating Australians from an early age about dingoes. “That’s really something we’re really working on … especially with something like Wandi’s book, it’s getting to the kids and getting into the schools,” he says. “He has really brought attention to the fact that there are still pure dingoes left here in Victoria, and that it’s important to protect them because they are at threat.” The dingoes are either bred in the sanctuary, or arrive as wild-born rescues. Many people will call the sanctuary when they have found a dingo in need of rescue, however Kevin says it’s important to make sure the dingo or cub actually needs rescuing. “The problem is often … they’re not really orphaned, it might just be that their parents are off hunting … so sometimes dingoes can get taken out of the wild that don’t need to be. “We actually try and encourage people not to take them out and only after observing them and watching them a period of time, even weeks or days … just making sure there’s no parents returning. “Because we don’t want to have to keep taking animals away from their family and away from the area where they should be living if it’s not necessary.” The sanctuary differs from others with its focus on DNA purity, with samples sent to the University of New South Wales for testing. “That’s really important to us; for keeping

that genetic line of pure dingoes that we always have into the future,” Kevin says. “We know they still exist in the wild, they’re still out there in the wild but we want to make sure we’re not going to lose them.” Wandi recently fathered two cubs who are being taken care of at the sanctuary by Kevin and the volunteers. Kevin says Wandi still looks up at the sky to look out for any prey in order to protect his cubs. The cubs, along with two others from another pair of dingoes, will be raised in the sanctuary to get used to people so that when they are older, they will be a good resource for education. There are still many dingoes who will never have the right personality for human interaction and so will eventually be released

back into the wild when they’re ready, according to Kevin. He hopes society will get to a point where there is not so much negative stigma attached to dingoes. He says the bounty was born out of farmers and landowners wanting to protect livestock with negative feelings towards dingoes being “a very ingrained ideology”. “In reality, there’s not a lot of livestock that are taken by predators. It’s a really low number.” Wooleen cattle station in Western Australia is one of very few who allow healthy, stable dingo populations to live on the property. The dingoes help with controlling the rabbit population, scare away kangaroos or feral goats and pigs. Dingoes also don’t hassle cattle
because they’re too big for a dingo to hunt. They also only eat lean meat like rabbits, possums and sometimes fish. They also love insects. “The fact is so many other countries are doing it so much better than we are. They work out different ways to protect livestock from jaguars, lions, coyotes, wolves,” Kevin says. There is now a group, Landholders for Dingoes, who help to educate landowners and farmers about how they can incorporate dingoes into how their stations are run. “It’s about how we can look at co-existing with them rather than trying to wipe them out completely,” Kevin says. What to look out for when buying an apartment Potential Victorian homebuyers should do their due diligence before making the important financial investment of buying an apartment, the state building regulator has warned. With the easing of restrictions now allowing Victorians to inspect properties the Victorian Building Authority is reminding consumers to know what to look for, including any defects or issues such as mould. The VBA’s state building surveyor Andrew Cialini said consumers should read all documents, such as the Section 32 statement, and research the history of the property. “Buying an apartment is a big investment, so make sure you know everything you can about a building before purchasing it – you should read the seller’s Section 32 statement and review information from the owners corporation, if it is available,“ he said. “You may also wish to ask for and review the previous owners corporation minutes from annual general meetings to give you a better understanding of the building’s history.“ A Section 32 statement, also called a vendor’s statement, is a legal document that must be factually accurate and complete. According to Consumer Affairs Victoria, this statement outlines the information a property seller must disclose to prospective buyers, such as the name of the relevant planning scheme and details of any undischarged mortgages or charges applying to the land. A buyer might be able to withdraw from the contract of sale before settlement if the Section 32 statement contains

incorrect or insufficient information. The Section 32 statement has details of current fees, insurance cover and any potential or existing legal claims affecting the property. Mitsubishi is a long-time player in electric power in vehicles – to the extent that I was one of an Australian group that Mitsubishi flew to Japan in 2010 to drive the i-MiEV, its first electric vehicle. We didn’t just go to some sort of fancy high-tech facility, but also got to buy things at a shopping centre and have lunch at a cafe. Both of these locations had EV charging facilities. About a year later we drove the Mitsubishi i-MiEV in Australia when it was launched here. It struggled to get from where we picked it up Brisbane to our home on the Gold Coast, a distance of just under 100km on a single charge. How things have changed in the last 10 years. While electric vehicle ranges have improved most people are still reluctant to buy full-electric vehicles but are increasingly going for hybrid petrol/electric. These come in two types - those that simply have the petrol engine charge the battery and ones that can be plugged in and charged, known as Plug-In Electric Vehicles or PHEVs. Now Mitsubishi has introduced the Eclipse Cross PHEV which joins its larger brother the Outlander that has been on sale here since 2014. It’s expensive. Very expensive. You have to pay $12,500 more for the PHEV compared to the similarly equipped non-PHEV Eclipse Exceed. Eclipse Cross PHEV has a 10 year / 200,000 km warranty on most of the vehicle provided that all servicing is done by Mitsubishi dealerships. Otherwise, the warranty reverts to five years and 100,000 km. The warranty on the EV drive battery is eight years or 160,000 km.

Digital Audio Broadcast is also standard, but we had the too-common problem of it dropping out.
Powertrain The powertrain in the Eclipse Cross is the latest iteration of the technology used in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Mitsubishi boasts that the Outlander PHEV is the world’s top-selling Plug-In Hybrid with more than 260,000 vehicles sold globally. The petrol engine is able to recharge the battery as well as power the vehicle simultaneously. The drive battery is a 13.8 kWh unit powering
The powertrain provides drivers with the ability to drive solely on electric power around town. At higher speeds or on longer drives, the powertrain will switch to Series or Parallel Hybrid modes to boost the range whilst minimising fuel consumption. When the destination is further afield, the hybrid modes employ the petrol engine to assist the battery or to directly drive the vehicle. As mentioned, the petrol engine is able to recharge the battery as well as power the vehicle simultaneously. Eclipse Cross is able to accelerate virtually instantly when there’s charge in the battery, a feature of all electric vehicles that we really like. Even when the battery was flat it sometimes picked up a bit of charge when slowing and/or when going down a hill. Fuel consumption is officially listed as just 1.9 litres per hundred kilometres. However, that’s so low because most of the testing is done using the battery. Once it’s running purely on petrol its consumption is about nine to 11 litres per hundred around town, dropping to six to seven in country running.
Summing up Eclipse Cross is an excellent example of the long experience Mitsubishi has had with electric or partial electric vehicles. It’s not cheap and personally we’d rather save our money and buy a standard hybrid rather than a plugin one.

Ben Collins earns United scholarship contract Western United’s inaugural National Premier League captain Ben Collins has earned a deal with the club’s A-League side. Collins has signed a one-year scholarship deal with the club, his first senior professional contract. The centre-back said he was immensely proud to have put pen to paper with the club. “I am delighted to sign my first professional contract,” Collins said. “It has been a dream of mine since I was young and for it to happen now I am extremely excited and thankful to everyone who has helped me achieve this. “The lads in the change room have welcomed me with open arms and made me feel a part of the team instantly. The togetherness in the change room is something I feel, and I think all the boys are very optimistic about what will
be a successful season. “I am very happy to remain at the club in the A-League. I have enjoyed every minute at the club and I look forward to the upcoming season.” Collins spent his junior career at Northcote City before joining United ahead of the NPL 3 campaign at the beginning of this year. He featured in every match of the season before it was cancelled in October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the season came to an abrupt end, Collins has been training with the A-League team impressing the coaching staff. United coach John Aloisi said Collins’ quality and maturity on the training pitch have shone through and helped him earn a contract. “Ben has really earned his spot here over the
last few months,” Aloisi said. “He’s been excellent in training since he came in and we’re delighted to have him. “As a defender he is very strong and very determined. Stepping up and defending against our top attacking players in training, he hasn’t looked out of place for a second. “Myself and the staff are really excited to have his development continue here with us. I’m sure he’ll be able to pick up a lot from the group and we’re hoping to see him have a big impact in the weeks and months to come.” Collins is the fourth player from the club’s NPL squad to earn an A-League contract after Adisu Bayew, Ajak Deu and Rhys Bozinovski. Jamieson is on the ball By Peter Howe Mitchell Jamieson has all the raw enthusiasm and just a hint of larrikin in his voice as he chats about his journey growing up in cricket. One thing becomes clear very quickly, his feet are firmly planted on the ground. “I am very grateful for all of the time my coaches have put into developing me as a batter and still put in as I embark on my first Premier Cricket season with Footscray. “Right from my first training session the senior players got around me and made me feel very welcome. “Their advice and support has assisted me to transition from my junior club, Keilor into senior cricket.” Jamieson’s father grew up playing both cricket and football and Jamieson followed in his footsteps, while his mum and two sisters also play cricket. The 16-year-old decided to play cricket because it’s a team game and he loved being around his mates. One of Mitchell’s biggest buzzes was to play in the same team as his father and getting to bat with him in the game. “I started playing in the under-10s at Keilor Cricket Club aged five. I moved to the under-12s aged seven and made my highest
score of 38 that stood for a few years.” Jamieson moved quickly through the club ranks at Keilor and is the youngest player to play in the club’s first XI. He made his debut in junior representative sides in under-12s. Jamieson would soon find himself in the region representative side, Western Spirit for under-14s and under-16s. From there he was selected in the Cricket Victoria under-15 metro team for the national championships. After a standout performance, which included a century, he was selected in the Cricket Australia under-16 team. Jamieson was selected to represent Victoria metro once again as a bottom age player in the under-17s. He is currently in the Cricket Victoria under-17 emerging players program and is looking forward to representing Vic Metro in January. “From my earliest coaching in cricket I learned that what works best for me is to keep things simple,” he said. “It is critical not to overly complicate things, which is fine when you are traveling OK. “It’s when you start to drop catches, make ducks, or lose finals that you start to question your ability. I had a run of outs last year before Christmas playing for Keilor, then had a long

talk to my coach Duncan Harrison, who told me to back myself. Jamieson is a student at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy on a cricket scholarship. Jamieson has had leadership potential written all over him through his junior career and capped it off by captaining Footscray in the Victorian Premier Cricket under-16 competition, The Dowling Shield. “I have enjoyed my opportunities to lead teams. I look to involve others; I look after younger players and make sure they feel part of the team. I understand I need to be a role model. I do have a steady head under pressure. However, above all it is necessary to have fun when we come together to play.” Jamieson wants to continue to build on his strengths as a young emerging player. His ultimate dream is the Baggy Green and a place in the Australian team. Jamieson is the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club, November Don Deeble Sports Star Award winner. An exciting Western Jets group is set to take to the field in the NAB League Girl’s competition next year. With most of the group from last season returning and a number of younger players getting their opportunity, coach Robbie Chancellor is excited. “We had a very young side last season and didn’t have many top age girls,” he said. “A lot of them were 16-year-olds and the experience will hold them in good stead. “We have some pretty special top age talent.” The group started pre-season a couple of weeks ago, with Chancellor saying that everyone had been super keen to get back around the group. Chancellor said it had been easier this time round, his second year in the job. “A lot of the group has come from last season and it makes it easier. “There’s been a lot of banter and so much enjoyment. The last couple of years have been so tough to do things, so being able to see your friends and be back at the Jets has been good.” In a change, the Jets season will get under way in January. Chancellor said being at their best in round one isn’t the be all and end all, with the program’s heavy focus on the development of players to play at the higher level. He said they expected to see a number of players put their hands up for the AFLW draft later next year. Montana Ham and Charlotte Baskaran are leading the pack, with both starring last season. “There are some really exciting prospects,” he said. “There’s a certain group with some consistent training, it will give them the opportunity to look at that next level. “Montana and Charlotte it will be their last year with us, even though they can play another season. “Jemima Woods, Caitlin Sargent, Trinity Skenderis and Stephanie Asciak all played some VFL last year. “There’s great talent coming through in the west.” Tara Murray
Surgeon takes on Keilor women’s coaching role New Keilor women’s coach Brooke Surgeon wants the club to continue to drive the standard in the Essendon District Football League. Since their introduction, the Blues have had plenty of success, including two premierships and a further two grand finals. Surgeon, who played for the club in its first year, was recently announced as the side’s new coach, taking over from Shannon McFerran. Surgeon had been appointed the club’s girls under-18 coach for the 2020 season, but the season was cancelled due to the pandemic. “It’s very exciting,” she said. “‘I played a few games for Keilor a few years back and we had a great supportive culture, a club that valued their people, so it was a club that I was always interested in being a part of again. “I kept in touch with some people at the club over that time.” Surgeon brings to the role an extensive playing and coaching background. She
played VFLW, represented Vic Metro, and is a three-time premiership player and two-time league best and fairest winner. She finished her playing days at the Blues, missing out on their first premiership due to injury, and quickly turned her attention to coaching. She has been assistant coach with NAB League sides, the Northern Knights and Western Jets. “I was ready for a new challenge,” she said. “The assistant role is good, but I was really to implement my own game plan and plan my side. “I have always been in leadership roles and I like passing on the knowledge I have picked up from different programs.” Surgeon said she was keen to make sure that club was a stepping stone for players to progress into the higher ranks, like the VFLW and possibly AFLW. “I want to get those players strong to
make it easier for the transition into higher competitions,” she said. “I’ll really focus on the timing and execution of skills and drive the standard at local football. “I see the development with female football, that local football will be at the skill of what the VFL is now, and the VFL will be at the skill of AFL [now] as the standard continues to grow. “I really want to play a tough attacking style of footy, first to the ball and no excuses.” Surgeon said there was some pressure taking over a side which is coming off a premiership. The EDFL awarded premierships to the teams that were on top of the ladder, when the season came to an early end due to COVID-19. The Blues pre-season will get under way on November 29. Surgeon said they were looking to get an under-18.5 side back up and going for next season and are currently looking for a coach.

Key players returning to Thunder By Tara Murray Keilor Thunder’s foray into the National Basketball League 1 South competition has received a boost, with two former players returning. The club last week announced that Aneta Bandilovska and Chloe Hildebrand would be returning to the women’s side. Both previously played for the club and were part of the Big V championship division grand final team in 2019. Bandilovska said Keilor had left an impression on her and she was quick to return when the opportunity arose. “The only reason I left Keilor was that they were in the Big V competition,” she said. “When they came up, it was easy to decide to return. It’s so special to be part of that first team. “My first year at the club was when I was a six-year-old kid playing domestic. Then I came back to play seniors at 16 in division 1 and then championship and now NBL1.” Bandilovska spent last season with the Waverley Falcons where she averaged nearly 15 points and three rebounds per game. She said the year of experience would only help her and her teammates. “When I left Keilor I was 19,” she said. “I’ve had a year of experience playing against current and ex-WNBL players. They are more professional and older. Even though I was coming up from Big V, I felt like I could come up and play at that level.” Bandilovska said her time at the Falcons also gave her the chance to play a bit more of the shooting guard role, having mostly played the point. Joining Bandilovska back at Keilor is Hildebrand who has also spent the last couple of seasons in the NBL1 south competition. Hildebrand, who played for the Thunder for two seasons previously, averaged nearly five points a game for Eltham Wildcats this year. “I’m so excited to have signed with Keilor for the upcoming NBL1 season,” she said. “I love the environment, energy, staff and girls at Keilor. “I had such a good experience with Keilor last time I played here. It was a no brainer as I’ve been coached by Tom [Bandilovski] throughout my juniors and it’s really important to have a coach that is willing to provide you with an opportunity to prove yourself and understands your game style and what you bring to the court.” Hildebrand said being with the Wildcats the last couple of years had been really beneficial

for her. “I believe I bring experience from the NBL1 level, as I understand what it takes to compete at this level and feel I will be a great asset for the team this year in order to enhance our ability to

program for next year. Former Australian under-17 player Abi Akintola was announced as the side’s newest signing on Friday.
