Dispelling the myths of coeducation at St Monica’s Initially established as a girls’ school in 1964, St Monica’s College in Epping has flourished since it became a coeducational school.

In the 1970s, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, as well as local clergy and parishioners, saw a need for boys’ Catholic education in the local area. To better meet community needs, St Monica’s College became a coeducational school in 1978.

Brian Hanley OAM is the college principal at St Monica’s College. Celebrating his 30th anniversary as principal of St Monica’s College, Mr Hanley was awarded an Order of Australia medal in June 2021 for his continued and exceptional contribution to education across a period of over 45 years.

Having seen more than 40,000 students pass through the college, Mr Hanley believes that students benefit greatly from a coeducational schooling experience and that it better prepares students for the real world.

“There are myths associated with coeducation just as there are with single-sex education.

These should all be dispelled as we come down to the one, most critical reality – humans live in a coeducational world and consequently enjoying a coeducation experience in school years should form a holistic person; confident and wise,” Mr Hanley says.

Government and Catholic primary schools, as well as all tertiary institutions, represent a cross section of society in that they are coeducational. Mr Hanley contends that this assists in improving respect, understanding, and positive attitudes among students while also breaking down sexist attitudes, harassment and bullying among genders.

“Being together throughout the day, feelings of comradeship and friendship develop in a natural way between girls and boys. These mutual feelings and uplifting experiences are inherently valuable to the fully rounded

Pawsome Petember Pup Scarling is taking part in a pawsome doggie dress-up this month to help raise money for children in need.

The Craigieburn canine and her human companion Thalia Pennisi are taking part in Petember in support of Variety Club.

The month-long fundraiser has participants dress up their canines to raise money for Variety assistance dogs, which help kids living with autism, anxiety and epilepsy.

Thalia, whose siblings benefited from the support of Variety while growing up, jumped at the chance to take part in Petember.

“Petember seemed like a great opportunity to help support [Variety’s] cause and raise awareness and funds for the incredible work they do, especially with their assistance dogs,” she said.

“Any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated.

“For those not able to donate, even just sharing the cause with your family and friends, or via social media is a tremendous help.

“We can all do our part to make life better and brighter for kids in need.”

Call for council monitor

By Oliver Lees and Michaela Meade A Hume councillor has called for a monitor to be appointed to oversee the council in a bid to resolve “deep cultural issues among councillors”.

It comes as eight arbiter’s reports were presented to a council meeting last week, costing ratepayers $49,500.

The reports follow an earlier arbiter’s report, which was tabled at the July 12 council meeting, and cost ratepayers $3000.

“What everyone has observed tonight … is that there are deep cultural issues among councillors at Hume,” Cr Jodi Jackson said.

“For the benefit of our ratepayers, I think that it’s entirely appropriate for a monitor to

be appointed here to Hume City Council as a matter of urgency.”

Eleven allegations of breaches of Hume’s Councillor Code of Conduct were investigated as part of an internal arbitration process into the conduct of Cr Trevor Dance.

This arbitration process was instigated by a group of councillors who were represented by Cr Carly Moore.

The arbiter’s report found Cr Dance contravened eight clauses of the Code of Conduct.

Cr Dance submitted seven applications instigating internal arbitration processes against mayor Joseph Haweil and councillors Moore, Jack Medcraft and Karen Sherry.

councillors had breached the Code of Conduct.

Speaking at last week’s council meeting, Cr Haweil said it was a “very, very sad day for Hume council“.

“I take absolutely no delight in the fact that one councillor has been found to have breached the Code of Conduct on … eight allegations by the arbiter,“ he said.

Broadmeadows Progress Association secretary Sonja Rutherford called for councillors to end the “nonsense”.

“Overall, it sickens me, it depresses me,” she said. “My question is why? Why is it being dealt with by this expensive process?

“People are taking up side issues … let’s look at the real issues that we’re facing.

“Maybe we should look at [a monitor] …

Former Hume councillor Ann Potter said calls for the appointment of a monitor were “outrageous”.

“In all my years on council … we had, I think, two councillor conduct issues,” Ms Potter said.

“They were unfortunate, but to now have seven in six months, with most of them being dismissed, is just horrible.”

A Hume council spokesperson said training had been given to councillors to support strong working relationships.

“Training sessions in relation to creating safe and respectful workplaces were conducted in July and August,” the spokesperson said.

Craigieburn COVID-19 concern Craigieburn remains an area of concern for health officials, with the number of active COVID-19 infections in the suburb topping 900.

Health officials have been raising concerns about the suburb and the wider 3064 postcode for the past week, as the number of COVID cases in the northern suburbs continues to grow.

Victoria recorded 507 new locally acquired cases on Sunday of which 65 were in postcode 3064- the highest number of any suburb.

Matson urged Craigieburn residents to get vaccinated.

A pop-up clinic was set up at Craigieburn’s Mount Ridley College on Saturday.

“Craigieburn is one of the most serious situations in terms of case numbers,” she said.

“Please come forward and get that jab, so that we can try and drive the case numbers down in Craigieburn.”

It comes as Premier Daniel Andrews revealed the state’s roadmap out of lockdown.

Under the plan, which Mr Andrews released on Sunday, lockdown will end on or

about October 26 when 70 per cent of eligible Victorians are fully vaccinated.

At this time, people will be able to travel 25 kilometres from their home and hospitality venues will be able to offer outdoor service to fully vaccinated people, subject to density requirements.

Hairdressers will be able to reopen to fully vaccinated people, subject to density requirements, and community sport will return.

Once 80 per cent of eligible Victorians are fully vaccinated, there will be no travel limits

and hospitality will be able to resume indoor service. People will be able to have up to 10 people over to their home.

Under the roadmap, year 12 students will return to school on October 5.

From October 18, prep pupils will return to classrooms three days a week, and year 1 and year 2 pupils will return to school two days a week.

The remaining year levels will return to school between two and five days a week from October 26.

Drawing on positive lockdown fun Three Whittlesea youngsters are finding the fun side of COVID-19 lockdown, creating caricature art works of prominent figures.

Madison, 10, and her siblings Alexandra, 7, and George, 6, have kept busy during lockdown, painting, sketching and colouring a range of well-known politicians - including Premier Daniel Andrews, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and former royals Prince Harry and Megan Markle.

Madison said the art was a good distraction from everything going on during Melbourne’s

sixth lockdown.

“Kids need a break from school work and everything they have been seeing and hearing on a daily basis,” Madison said.

“Phone a friend, have a dance or get busy creating things. Do whatever makes you happy and brings a smile to your face.

“There is enough negative news in the world right now and I want to change that – one funny drawing at a time.”

Author and mother Maria Ligerakis said art was an effective way for kids to express

themselves.

“Children are extremely perceptive and like little sponges constantly absorbing the world around them,” Ms Ligerakis said.

“That’s why we need to go that extra mile to help build children’s resilience and allow them to express their emotions in a safe way.

“For some kids that means dabbling in art and putting their thoughts, emotions and hopes for the future on paper.”

Northern Health’s virtual emergency department (ED) has extended its operating hours to further support the community during the COVID-19 peak period.

The virtual ED was launched in October last year and allows patients to speak with emergency nurses and doctors from the comfort of their home, work or even car.

During the peak COVID-19 period, it will be open from 1pm to 11.30pm.

Emergency physician Loren Sher said the extended hours are a temporary change so that residents can have increased access to the service.

“In many instances, we will be able to manage a patient’s condition at home,” Dr Sher said.

“Patients that need to attend the ED will be advised when it’s best to attend for their condition, and will be given advice on how to manage their condition at home until they are seen in the ED. “This way, patients will spend the least amount of time in the waiting room and the ED.” The virtual ED also reduces the COVID-19 exposure risk, and allows medical teams to deliver quicker care to patients.

“With the current COVID-19 situation, we know our community are worried about accessing emergency care, so we are happy to provide advice on how and when to come in,” Dr Sher said.

The virtual ED is available to anyone living in the hospital’s catchment area, and a Medicare card is not necessary to use the service.

Community feedback wanted Hume council’s draft community vision and draft council plan 2021-25 is now open for community feedback.

Oval revamp celebrated The football and cricket communities of Doreen are celebrating the upcoming redevelopment of Laurimar Recreation Reserve’s west oval.

The upgrade will include the installation of new drainage and irrigation, a cricket wicket, and a natural turf surface to provide teams with premium facilities for training and matches.

New fencing and coaches’ boxes will also be installed as part of the redevelopment.

Whittlesea council administrator Chris Eddy said providing the “first-rate facilities” that support community sport was a high priority for council.

“Local sport is at the heart of our community and helps bring people together,” Mr Eddy said.

“The upgrade to Laurimar Recreation Reserve will boost participation in sport and help keep our community active.”

The reserve is the home of the Laurimar Football Club, which includes over 600 members.

Club president Alasdair Walker said he was looking forward to teams playing and training on the redeveloped ground next season.

“The upgrade will be truly first-class and provide a better home facility for all of our teams,” Mr Walker said. “It will improve safety, accessibility and importantly sustainability, which will give us the confidence to grow and attract more members to the club.”

Works on the redevelopment are set to commence next month.

‘Vile’ Nazi graffiti condemned Scullin MP Andrew Giles fears racism is on the rise as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic as police investigate the spread of “Nazi propaganda” in the northern suburbs.

Mr Giles has launched a petition calling on the community to “reject this hate”.

He told Star Weekly he has received several reports about anti-Semitic graffiti around the city of Whittlesea, particularly in Mernda.

Anti-Semitic graffiti and stickers also appeared at Broadmeadows’ Jack Roper Reserve earlier this month. That graffiti is being investigated by police.

“One thing is clear – there’s plenty of

evidence that racism, over the course of the pandemic, has increased,” Mr Giles said.

“The recent spread of vile Nazi propaganda across the northern suburbs has caused great distress.

“There’s a sense of disbelief that this could be happening in Melbourne.

“It’s people trying to weaponise other people’s fears.

“We must come together to reject this hate, and stand proudly together as a diverse community.”

Hume mayor Joseph Haweil said the council is “extremely disappointed” to see the expression of hate-crime in Hume.

“Anti-Semitism is one of the most repugnant forms of bigotry,” Cr Haweil said.

“I condemn in the strongest terms possible anybody engaged in sharing symbols associated with the murder of millions of Jews in the Second World War. “This behaviour is illegal and offensive.”

The graffiti has also been condemned by the Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC).

ADC chairman Dvir Abramovich said the community should be concerned about the

“contagion of hate” on display.

“Parents taking their children for a walk in a park should not be confronted with these disturbing messages,” Dr Abramovich said.

“Whenever such incidents happen, there is chilling emotional damage on all community members.

“We know that propaganda efforts by these hardcore racists are on the increase, and these incidents are the latest in a string of similar attempts to spread this dangerous agenda across Melbourne.”

A message of kindness One thousand handmade hearts are hanging from a tree outside Thomastown Library as a symbol of the community’s kindness.

The hearts have been created by community members as part of the Yarra Plenty Regional Library and Thomastown Neighbourhood House 1000 Hearts of Kindness project.

Residents are being encouraged to take part in the project to life people’s spirits during lockdown.

Thomastown Library branch manager Coralie Kouvelas said the community response to the project has been “overwhelmingly positive”.

“Each day at Thomastown [library], we have seen our tree grow with more hearts,” she said.

“Children stop to play under the tree on their way to or from picking up a book at the library or a visit to the park.”

Ms Kouvelas said the library is providing free maker’s kits so people of all abilities can

take part in the project.

“The kits contain felt, thread for sewing and template instructions,” she said.

“People can decorate their hearts any way they desire.

“Community members are placing their hearts on trees outside of Thomastown Library to share the kindness with passers-by.

“Through simple sewing and promoting connected community mindfulness, the 1000 hearts project aims to move beyond the [library’s] Textiles & Craft Maker Space and foster a community of makers and kindness.”

Fears pizza shop won’t survive

By Michaela Meade The operator of an Epping pizza shop is worried his business won’t survive a lengthy shut down, after a fire at a neighbouring milk bar damaged his store.

The High Street milk bar caught fire about 1.10am on August 27.

The blaze destroyed the shop and damaged neighbouring businesses Soprano’s Pizza, Stockdale & Leggo Epping and Chow Garden.

Police have charged three men over the blaze and a second fire at the milk bar a day earlier.

A 20-year-old Wollert man, a 19-year-old Thomastown man and a 47-year-old Thomastown man have been charged with

multiple offences including criminal damage, burglary and theft.

They appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 28.

Soprano’s Pizza director Sam Cowan said his shop sustained structural damage in the blaze. “[The] ceiling is burnt, roof has issues, all electrical fittings burnt,” he said.

“We had to shut down, as the building is not safe for our customers and staff.

“We are worried. If we are closed for three to four months, [will] we be able to ever come back in these tough and competitive times?”

Mr Cowan said the community has been supportive of his business.

“We are very pleased to see our customers

[have] supported us and kept us in their thoughts and they are very keen for us to bounce back,” he said.

“This has been a huge moral support to keep us going and working towards fixing the shop [as soon as possible].”.

Chow Garden owner Wendy Jiang said her store rented a generator after wires that provide power to the restaurant melted.

Ms Jiang said keeping the business closed to wait for repairs was not an option, despite the generator’s high cost.

“My worry was … if we close the business for too long, we might lose customers,” she said.

Petition protests housing plan Close to 1000 people have signed an online petition calling for Whittlesea council to abandon plans to lease vacant land in Wollert to a community housing organisation.

The council is seeking community feedback on its proposal to lease the land at 1F Ashline Street on a 50-year term for affordable housing.

Council’s chair administrator Lydia Wilson said affordable housing was “urgently needed” in the municipality.

“We know there is a critical shortage of local homes that are affordable for our residents on low incomes,” she said.

“Council is pursuing various options to address the growing need for more affordable housing to be made available locally to support city of Whittlesea residents on low incomes, including opportunities to provide its unused land for this purpose.

“We are confident we can secure a partnership with an experienced community housing organisation to ensure a design that fits in well with the local area.”

The petition calls on the council to consider other avenues for providing affordable housing in the municipality.

“I fear that the amenity of my Wollert neighbourhood will suffer and the value of my property will plummet as a consequence of the proposal coming into effect,” the petition states.

The proposal is open for feedback until Sunday, October 11.

Cat curfew on the agenda Whittlesea’s feline residents could be subject to a cat curfew under a new plan being considered by council.

The council is seeking feedback on its draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2021-25 (DAMP) which addresses a number of issues, including a cat curfew.

Compliance and environmental health manager Debbie Blandford said at this stage, “no decisions have been made” regarding a curfew for cats in the municipality, but that initial feedback from the community showed some interest in introducing one.

“During [initial] consultation, we actually received quite a bit of feedback about roaming cats trespassing onto others’ properties,” Ms Blandford said. “At the moment, it’s very difficult for council to be able to help address those issues because we just don’t have the legal order or the cat curfew.

Meanwhile, Hume councillor Jack Medcraft has called for a report on whether a cat curfew can be introduced in his municipality.

Speaking at a council meeting last week, Cr Medcraft said he wanted a curfew to be introduced to protect wildlife in the area.

Whittlesea’s draft DAMP will be open for feedback until Thursday, September 30.

“If there is one thing that this year’s lockdowns have taught us, then it is the fact that perfection is truly an illusion. At the start of this marathon, some called year 12, like any other student, I held my belief in the illusion of perfection, assuming that this one year would be the most perfect school year. Perfect SACS, abundant motivation, the ultimate peak of my high school journey.

Boy was I wrong! This year has not been like the ideal year 12 I had in mind; in fact, it is far from it, but I guess it has shaken us up as humans and taught us that plans do not always work, and life, unlike modern humans, is not controlled by stringent timetables and calendars we impose on. Life in its natural state is unpredictable and uncontrollable and I guess that is what completing VCE in the middle of a global pandemic has taught me. Some days motivation does not come naturally and other days nothing seems more ideal than sitting in our warm rooms, sipping a cup of hot chocolate as we attend our VCE classes in our ‘oodies’. Year 12 this year has been crazy, but I guess we adapted to and normalised this abnormal way of life. I am sure in the end all our hard work and efforts will pay off.”

“Like many people, when I first heard about the COVID-19 virus, I thought it would be over and forgotten about within a matter of weeks. Now, nearly two years on, we are in our sixth lockdown. Year 12 is meant to be the most memorable and fun year of our entire high school journey. Getting drivers licenses, going to parties, and of course spending hours studying for our final exams. Instead, we have spent most of the last 24 months in our rooms or at our desks, staring at a screen for six hours a day, five days a week. Completing VCE online has presented its challenges and has been a tough journey. No socialising with friends and less one-on-one teacher time. The uncertainty of when a lockdown may strike caused cohort-wide anxiety, as well as not knowing when these ‘seven-day lockdowns’ will end, or if we’ll even have a graduation ceremony. Year 12 students have certainly had one of the toughest, if not the toughest, final years of school to date. Our final exams will signify much more than just the end of high school for me. They also signify the end of an extremely anxious, stressful, and uncertain two years of schooling, that I will never forget.”

“COVID-19 has been a massive hurdle for our cohort. Since the beginning of our VCE years in 2020, the 2021 graduate class has been trialled by the meandering nature of lockdown rules and being on and off school grounds; a crisis within a crisis. Maintaining a bounded optimism in the face of stress of online learning has been difficult. Amongst the many challenges faced, the many feats of perseverance and ongoing battle of class-call connection issues, many of us have found solidarity within ourselves, whether it be spending more time with family, pets or engaging in your favourite hobbies. For me, the time spent in lockdown has allowed me to reconnect with myself, my interests and my goals as well as regain touch outside of social settings. The lockdown period has also allowed me to spend more meaningful, quality time with my family, a commodity that would have not been possible otherwise. This critical period has also acted as a lesson of appreciation, ultimately refining, and deepening my gratefulness for the many things I took for granted prior to lockdown.

The social opportunities, the presence of certain people in my life, friends, family, supportive and caring teachers and the daily opportunities for growth that are provided.”

“Last year was tough, but since I was in year 11, I wasn’t too concerned. Fast forward to year 12, with term three complete and the school holidays upon us – packed full of trial exams and last-minute revision lessons. The GAT in four weeks, and then my first exam three weeks later, all while getting VTAC applications sorted and deciding what to do with my future. So yes, studying VCE during a global pandemic has been a little stressful! The worst part is feeling unsure whether we will be coming back to school in a day or whether we will spend another week online. When it was announced that a few select subjects and students would return on-site, I was extremely excited. Then, a mere two days before my first on-site class, restrictions were extended again, and those classes were cancelled. When the state is going in and out of lockdowns, it can be difficult to stick to a consistent schedule, but the trick is to stay motivated. That could simply mean waking up, putting on clothes (other than pyjamas) and logging on to join a meeting. We also need to keep a positive mind and look on the bright side of life. For instance, you can sleep in a little longer, the food at home is amazing, you can have showers during Recess or go for bike rides at lunchtime!”

Dance vows to attend meetings

By Oliver Lees Hume Councillor Trevor Dance has been directed not to attend the next two council meetings and must apologise to council after an arbiter found he breached the Councillor Code of Conduct.

Eleven allegations of breaches of Hume’s Councillor Code of Conduct were investigated as part of an internal arbitration process into the conduct of Cr Dance.

According to the arbiter’s report, Cr Dance contravened eight clauses of the Councillor Code of Conduct.

The process was instigated by a group of councillors who were represented by Cr Carly Moore.

Cr Dance left the September 13 council meeting before the arbiter’s reports were tabled, due to a work commitment.

He declared a conflict of interest in all eight reports prior to leaving the meeting.

Cr Dance maintains he will continue to undertake council business on behalf of his constituents by attending all council meetings.

“I absolutely have not been suspended.

At this point I will be attending all Council meetings,“ Cr Dance said in a statement issued

to Star Weekly.

“I am still able to serve my community in that time in my usual capacity as an elected Councillor.“ The internal arbitration process cost ratepayers $16,500, not including the cost of staff time and internal room hire costs.

“The costs were absolutely not provided to me and I was appalled to learn of the unacceptably high expense to Council for the arbiter’s services,“ Cr Dance said.

The arbiter’s report noted that Cr Dance did not take part in hearings relating to the arbitration process.

However Cr Dance told Star Weekly he offered to participate virtually.

“I never refused to participate as has been stated and followed all of the arbiter directions “ he said.

“I was never provided with a COVID Safe Plan and I had medical reasons that were provided.

“I confirmed with the arbiter that I was more than happy to participate and would attend hearings virtually at any time.“ Cr Dance said the matter was now the subject of a Victorian Human Rights Commission submission.

Travel inspires author Craigieburn local Shelley Cass has grown from an embarrassed student who struggled to learn to read, to a successful author celebrating the release of the second book of her fantasy trilogy.

‘The Raiden’ is the follow-up to ‘The Last Larnaeradee’, and follows protagonists the Three while their country prepares for war and they prepare for “the battle of their lives”.

Ms Cass said that her travels have inspired her work.

“My travels to different places have often sparked inspiration for different settings I’d love to write about,” she said.

“A trip through the rainforest in Port Douglas, and a beautiful sinkhole garden in Mount Gambier inspired my ancient Sylthanryn City [in the novels] to come to life.”

Ms Cass said the trilogy, named “A Fairy’s Tale”, was inspired by self reflection.

“Things I felt in the angsty days of teenagedom, things I daydreamed so vividly that they just had to be painted onto a page in words [inspired me],” she said.

“Characters’ moods could reflect my moods because scenes did not always get written in sequence.

“But a deep undercurrent, and then a driving plot point of my novel was a focus on our world.

“I was often most worried, and most moved, by what I could make of the state of nature and humanity.”

Calls for more social housing

Homes Victoria recently announced a social housing project in Sunbury as part of the state government’s Big Housing Build.

While the project has been welcomed by council, it has called on Homes Victoria to commit to more projects in other parts of the municipality.

Cr Haweil said council officials had a meeting with Home Victoria chief executive Ben Rimmer last month, where there was “no mention” of the most recent projects.

“All I can say is how disappointed I am that

when there’s a very important decision made, we are finding out once again through the media,” Cr Haweil said.

“An announcement has been made with no consultation with us.”

Homes Victoria was approached for comment.

Nine social housing properties will be built in Epping as part of the Big Housing Build, while 48 will be built in Lalor, 11 in Wollert and 10 in Bundoora.

Whittlesea council’s chair administrator Lydia Wilson said housing for people on low incomes was urgently needed.

“One in five households in the city of Whittlesea is classified as having a very low income and we know many families and people who are working in essential jobs such as childcare, health care, hospitality and retail are facing housing stress,” Ms Wilson said.

“Council welcomes the Victorian government’s investment through the Big Build Program funding to help address this critical shortage.

“It is another step in ensuring the provision of local housing for local people which is affordable.”

Doreen’s very own bard A Doreen resident has been initiated into the College of Bards of Gorsedh Kernow.

The bards of Gorsedh Kernow help to maintain the national Celtic spirit of Cornwall by studying their own Cornish history and culture.

Doreen’s Ken Peak, the current president of the Cornish Association of Victoria, was initiated into the college earlier this month and said he was surprised by the “completely unexpected” honour. “[It] has been a very humbling experience,” Mr Peak said.

“I was initiated by proxy, as there was no way this year we would travel to Cornwall.

“However, the Bardic Ceremony, which included the initiation of new bards, was streamed live from Cornwall and so I was able to watch it from home.

“One day I will get to Cornwall again for one of these ceremonies in the future.”

Mr Peak is the third in his extended family to be made a bard and said there were a great number of Australians with Cornish roots.

“More than 700,000 Australians identify themselves as having Cornish heritage,” he said.

“Many of these folk, like me, have Cornish ancestors who emigrated to Australia to work in the mines or on the Australian Goldfields in the 19th century.

“These people helped forge our nation.

“I am deeply honoured to be welcomed as a Bard of Cornwall.”

The timeless art of connecting Residents of Melbourne’s north-west are among those featured in a new book, The Art of Lockdown, revealing how the Ukrainian community used art and culture to connect and maintain wellbeing during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Project co-ordinators Chrestyna Kmetj and Natalia Moravski said the idea grew like wildfire via The Art of Lockdown Facebook group and virtual exhibition, quickly going international. Below, some of our local residents explain the meanings behind their contributions.

Maru Jarockyj, Sunbury The prolonged lockdown brought with it moments of mental anguish, fears for the war in Ukraine, spiritual reflection and psychological agony. The anguish and the agony landed on the canvas in blood red and fiery yellow shapes around an iconic father image: hands pierced with red suffering dripping onto the yellow Ukrainian tridents. Hope extinguishes fear and the yellow cross promises a resurrection, a new era, a new post-COVID renaissance.

To break the monotony of the days during lockdown, I decided to do some art. Christmas always evokes wonderful memories of a carefree childhood, joy, comfort and family unity, so I chose Christmas decorations. When I saw the exhibition, Art of Lockdown, I decided to join it and unite myself with the Ukrainian community in Australia.

I sometimes draw whatever comes into my mind.

Sometimes, I don’t know what to draw and then I just sit next to the paper for hours doing nothing. A lion is actually my favourite animal because my name actually has ’lion’ in it (Lev). At the moment we are doing homeschooling. It was a little bit more difficult because there was only my siblings to play with, no one else.

COVID lockdown in 2020 awarded me the time to focus on creating a quilt that would represent my thoughts of women and the important role they play in society. I have never done any quilting before, so the task seemed daunting. The double wedding ring design is traditionally made by mothers and grandmothers for their children and given as gifts on their wedding day or anniversaries. It is a complex pattern as it has a lot of moving parts and was quite frustrating to assemble. Once this quilt was complete, I felt inspired to keep creating, so by the start of 2021 I had completed eight unique quilts for my family and close friends.

The Bulla Hill Railway is back on track for 2021.

A vibrant drive from Hyundai

Hyundai Kona Elite has fascinating frontal styling with the unusual arrangement of the lights.

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Hyundai has a strong lineup of models in its Kona series - everything from a relatively basic petrol engined models all the way up to a full electric. Much as we enjoy getting behind the wheel of any electric car, this week’s road test review is the Kona Elite variant.

At $31,600 plus on-road costs it’s far more affordable than the (gulp) $64,000 Highlander Extended Range full-electric model.

Kona and produces 110kW of power and 180Nm of torque at a rather high 4500 rpm.

Those revs mean most drivers will seldom go as high as 4500, however there’s reasonable punch below that number.

The automatic transmission is a continuously variable transmission to maximise performance and minimise petrol consumption. More about the auto in the Driving section of this review.

As part of the mid-life makeover the CVT replaced the six-speed conventional auto previously used.

Styling Kona is a cross between a hatchback and an SUV in its shape. The protection around the wheels arches adds to the SUV look. The body is stylish without going over the top. We particularly like the front with its high-level daytime running lights and the low-slung headlights.

Ground clearance is 170mm which is higher than the typical on-road hatchback but falls well short of the 210mm in “real” four-wheel drives. That 170mm does add to the appearance, though.

Interior There’s an upmarket look inside the Kona, though the materials themselves don’t have the feel to match that look. Fair enough because it’s sold at a far lower price than the prestige cars and money has to be trimmed somewhere.

We like the practical dashboard with its large dials and an easy to see centre display set at the same level as the instruments so you spend minimum time looking away from the road to check it.

Infotainment The Elite model has an eight-speaker Harman/ Kardon premium sound system, we found the setup of the speakers and gave us the sort of sound we like.

Engines / transmissions The 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine sits across the front of the Hyundai

Safety All Kona variants have received five stars from ANCAP. It has six airbags, forward collision warning, lane keeping assist and lane-following assist.

The Kona Elite model also has blind-spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and safe-exit warning. The automatic emergency braking recognises cars, pedestrians and cyclists at low and high speeds.

It also has rear occupant alert in case you’ve forgotten there are kids in the back seats when you get out. No doubt it has happened somewhere sometime.

comfort. Kona is obviously not a sports car but does hold on nicely during cornering and gives good feedback through the steering while and your backside.

It’s a bit noisy on gravel road and there’s some bump-thump on concrete road joins such as those on our road test section on the M1 motorway between Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Fuel consumption during our test period was in the 8 to 10 litres per hundred kilometres in town and suburban driving. It fell to five to six litres per hundred on country and motorway testing.

All Hyundais have a five-year/ unlimited-kilometre warranty and a lifetime capped-price-servicing plan.

Summing up The updated Hyundai Kona Elite is a pleasant car that’s easy to live with. We feel the added ‘extras’ now fitted as standard, particular in the safety features makes it a must on your short list of cars to be seriously considered.

Driving Let’s get to the CVT automatic straight away as that’s what friends have been asking me about due to my previous complaints about CVTs in other cars. There’s good news as Hyundai’s engineers have got it pretty well sorted out and have given it a feeling of having preset ratios, it did jar a little but we soon ceased to notice what was happening under the bonnet.

You can sort of use it as a manual by changing ‘gears’ if you feel that way inclined. After trying this we simply left if to do its own thing.

There’s less room in rear seat of the Kona than we had expected, meaning I had to move my driving seat forward a couple of notches to provide knee room for anyone behind me.

United realises W-League dream

By Tara Murray For a young club, Western United has some big dreams.

About to start its third A-League season, the club has been busy in the background to ensure there is a platform from the ground up for both males and females in the western suburbs.

The next stage in the development is on track, with the club to field a W-League side from the 2022-23 season.

The club had been vocal about its desire to add a top league women’s side, having formed a partnership with National Premier League Women’s side Calder United, and recently setting up a female development squad.

The announcement of United’s W-League side was exactly what Adriana and Melissa Taranto wanted to hear.

The twins have been in the Victorian system for a number of years, signing with Melbourne Victory when they were 15.

While they have not been part of a W-League club the past couple of years, they said the announcement of a new club in Melbourne’s west was exciting.

Both have their sights focused on a spot in United’s inaugural squad.

“It is so exciting,” said Adriana. “Especially after the last few years we’ve had with soccer.

“In the past two years we’ve played 10 games of soccer due to the lockdown.

“It’s so exciting for Victoria and across Australia as it gives so many young girls the opportunity.”

Mel added: “It’s good news for everyone”.

The duo, who play for Calder United, are both part of Western United’s development squad and say the work the club has done with the squad and Calder United has been amazing.

The 22-year-olds believe they are now ready for a real crack at the W-League after struggling a bit while at Melbourne Victory.

“We’ve grown up a lot since then,” said Adriana. “We were like deers in the headlights and I admit I don’t think I handled it well. We were still young and playing against the likes of Sam Kerr.”

Mel said that experience showed through at the one development squad session they had, where they felt a lot more comfortable than some of the younger girls.

Western United’s head of female football, Amanda Stella, said she didn’t imagine that there would be a W-League team in Melbourne’s west so soon.

Stella came on board at Western United last year after the club formed a relationship with Calder United, of which she is president.

“I thought maybe in the long-term future we would see a side,” she said.

“I think it’s because of Western United’s commitment to the female game, females in general, they’ve fast tracked this in our community.

“The investment, the publicity and the opportunity they have already given to players

of the west, players of Calder, is amazing and that hasn’t been done before.”

Stella said there had been a lot of work done behind the scenes in a short period of time to get the club ready for a W-League side.

She said the club had been aiming to have a side for the upcoming season, but in hindsight, with the COVID-19 pandemic, an extra 12 months to get the team ready isn’t a bad thing.

“It’s very exciting, it’s been challenging the last few months,” she said.

“For Western United, it’s an amazing achievement. It’s a young club and they’ve been very much wanting to get a W-League licence since they started.

“We’ve started the development squad, but we only got one session in before we went into lockdown.

“The minute we can get that back up and

running we will, that group of girls will hopefully travel a little bit with the A-League team and play some friendlies try and get in some games.

“We have a good pool of girls to choose from for our first W-League team.”

Stella said United’s aim was to give young players in Melbourne – and particularly in Melbourne’s west – the opportunity to shine at a higher level.

She said with limited spots to play W-League in Victoria, many players were leaving to play interstate.

“We’re going to start new and we’re going to invest in youth as we know where the long-term success will come from,“ she said.

“We’re not going to sign 10 ready-made champions. It’s about home grown talent and I have always argued that they could challenge anyone.

“For young girls from the west, there’s a W-league team that will be part of their community.”

For the Taranto twins, the next 12 months will be a big.

“We will keep working hard and move forward with Calder United with their season first,” they said. “We’ll do what we can for them and get as fit as possible and hopefully get into the W-League squad.

“We’re just excited to get out there and play.”

Disappointing end to Demon’s EDFL season Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdown spelling a quicker end to the Tullamarine Demons’ Essendon District Football League season was “inevitable”, says co-coach David Connell.

The EDFL announced earlier this month that it would award premierships, without finals going ahead amidst restrictions.

The Demons missed out on the trophy for division 1, finishing up second on the ladder with 36 points.

East Keilor claimed the top spot and the gong, sitting in first place with 44 points.

Tullamarine had won nine games throughout the season, and lost three.

Connell said the EDFL’s decision was tough but fair.

“We’re all disappointed that we didn’t get the opportunity, but it had gotten to a point where we all felt that it was inevitable,” he said.

“Asking the guys to make the same commitment that they have throughout lockdowns with virtual training and everything, that’s mentally draining for everyone.

“We would’ve loved to have played, but

when there’s a big break across a lockdown, it’s not the most realistic thing.

“We’re a blue collar club, so we’ve got lots of tradies and things.

“When it gets to the point that it did, the guys just wanted to move on.

“With things how they are, they had bigger worries.

“It is what it is.

“The control was out of our hands, but now we can all take a breath, freshen up, and hopefully look at the future with some optimism.”

Connell said lockdown had been challenging for all players and staff at the club.

“In terms of engagement with the playing group, you could see each lockdown wearing down on everyone,” Connell said.

“We’re a tight-knit group as well, so … not only have we missed football, but we missed the social aspect, especially on the back of last year.

“With a bit of luck … we’re all hoping we’re past the worst of this and that 2022 goes off without a hitch.

“The majority of the group have re-signed, so we’re confident that we’ll launch into the new season strong.”

Connell said he and co-coach Ben Chapman had been happy with the team’s performance throughout the stopping and starting of the season.

Connell said there were four players who stood out throughout.

Todaro’s double honour

By Michaela Meade Mernda Football Club’s Natalie Todaro is celebrating a double win, having been awarded the Northern Football League division 3 best and fairest trophy, and the gong for division 3 coaches’ MVP. Todaro said it was amazing to be recognised for both honours, and that she felt supported by her community.

“After the vote count I had a lot of people reach out to congratulate me and felt a lot of support and love from my team, friends and family,” Todaro said.

“That was really the best part for me, to see that I had so many supporters and people that were proud of me.

“It was a bit exciting seeing my name on the screen because I’ve never gotten any footy awards outside my club.

“So being recognised by the NFL coaches and umpires was really a great feeling.”

Todaro took out the best and fairest trophy with 16 votes. Valiecia Kelly-Briggs from the Fitzroy Stars came in second with 12 votes.

Todaro was recognised as the coaches’ MVP with 61 votes. Kiera Hunter from Laurimar claimed 49 votes, finishing second.

“There are so many amazing players in division 3 and so much new talent coming from my own team and others like Fitzroy Stars,” Todaro said.

“There were so many other deserving women who could have easily taken out the awards.

“I was definitely not surprised to see my teammate and best friend Awek Dut on the leaderboard for both awards as well!

“She is an absolute gun of a footballer and [an] all round amazing person. I’m so proud of her achievements this year.”

Dut secured fifth place in the run for coaches’ MVP, and equal fourth place for the best and fairest of the division 3 season.

Todaro said a standout moment for her this season, despite multiple lockdowns, was Mernda’s round three game against Banyule.

“That was the first time where I felt like I stepped up against a really competitive side and made an impact in the game,” Todaro said.

“I was so proud of all of my teammates who put everything out in that game and put their bodies on the line for each other – the teamwork and camaraderie was amazing.”

because of lockdowns, but that her team had powered through.

“We all faced so many challenges with our fitness and mental health when training/ games were cancelled and gyms were closed,” she said.

“For myself, footy and exercise is my way of dealing with stress and maintaining my mental health. So each time we went into lockdown was very tough on me.

“But my team found great ways of dealing with this.”

“Steve Vocale, he really established himself as a really strong player and asset,” he said.

“Anthony Liberatore – it was his best season so far at Tullamarine. He was able to focus just on Tullamarine and really put his all into it.

“In terms of younger players, Alessio Gobbo is a player who’s been in development over four years with us. He’s fighting heavily in the best and fairest [considerations].

“Cooper Perry only came to us this year.

He’s come in and won our goal kicking.

“Both Gobbo and Perry have really surprised people.”

Connell said that with a $1.9 million upgrade to club facilities on the way, and a majority of the team re-signing for the 2022 season, there was one obvious goal.

“We’re absolutely not afraid to hide it, we’ll be gunning for the premiership next year,” he said “Anything less than a premiership will be disappointing after all the work we’ve all put in.”

United’s season unfinished Greenvale United wants Football Victoria to give its senior men’s team a chance to shine with promotion to the league’s higher ranks, according to the club president.

COVID-19 lockdowns prematurely ended FV seasons, and Greenvale finished its state league 4 contest at the top of the ladder.

Greenvale president Michael Eliades said the teams across the board have played their hearts out for two years, with no formal acknowledgement.

“It’s pretty hard to have played two seasons to no result,” Eliades said.

“The senior boys have played [a lot] of games, and only lost two.

“The boys were excited the whole season, and were making sure we were at the top, and competitive.

“We’ve then had the rug pulled from under us.”

Eliades said the club will be “making our case” to officials in the league for promotions of teams.

He said despite how the season ended up, it was a strong one for the club.

“This year has been … one of our most successful seasons as a club … both juniors and seniors,” Eliades said.

“We’re in talks with [FV] to see what can be done [after] we were informed … there’s no relegations or promotions.

“It’s impacted all clubs … we just want to make sure we get the right outcome for our teams.”

Eliades said it was “frustrating and disappointing” that the 2020 and 2021 seasons have been left unfinished.

“It’s just a shame for our kids and seniors, that we can’t fulfill that journey,” he said.

“We’ve worked tirelessly to change the culture, and managed to do so, and now… through no fault of our own, we can’t finish off the year.

“I hope that the worst is behind us, and that we can have people bounce back.”
