Attired to amuse Wyndham Vale mother-of-three Chloe Teao is bringing plenty of smiles to her suburb during lockdown. Miss Teao has been dressing up in costumes – such as a blow-up chicken, a nun and Michael Jackson – before driving to a friend’s house near her own and dancing in the street. She often attracts the attention of other residents who join in the laughter and film her, from their own properties. Miss Teao said she was inspired to launch her cheer-inducing campaign after talking to friends on the phone, who did not “sound like their usual bubbly selves”. “I thought, ‘You know what, I need to do something,” she said. “I just thought: ‘I’ll dress up and be silly. “More people should do it – it brings joy to you as well as others.” Miss Teao even scored a free meal after cracking up staff when she walked into McDonald’s while dressed as a chicken. “I just want people to know how, even in horrible times, you can find joy,” she said. Drug users seek help By Alesha Capone The nation’s highest number drug users seeking help for amphetamine, cannabis and heroin use has been recorded in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs, new data reveals. Figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show that the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) recorded the most people seeking assistance for drug-related issues in the nation in the year to July, 2020. The NWMPHN covers 13 municipalities including Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Melton, Moorabool,

Hume and Macedon Ranges. A total of 6077 people from these areas sought treatment for amphetamine use in the 2019-2020 financial year. South-east Melbourne recorded the second-highest number of people seeking treatment- 3710. The north and west also recorded the most people seeking help for alcohol (5725), with the Northern Territory coming in second (5268). Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs topped the list for those wanting help for cannabis use (3110 people) and heroin (1534 people). Out of the 19,863 people who received

treatment for drugs in the north and west, almost 30 per cent asked for support and case management, 25.9 per cent requested an assessment and 22.6 per cent obtained counselling. A Coroners Court of Victoria report released earlier this month revealed 4551 Victorians died by overdose in the past decade, with 183 deaths in Brimbank, 106 in Maribyrnong, 101 in Wyndham and 93 in Hume. IPC Health chief executive Jayne Nelson said the organisation provided free services for those in Melbourne’s west struggling with addiction. Ms Nelson said this included counselling

for alcohol, other drug or gambling problems; a needle and syringe exchange program; and GP, medical and allied health services. “Drug overdose is a devastating problem,” Ms Nelson said. “As the population grows rapidly in the west of Melbourne, there are more people in need of local community-based health and wellbeing services. “IPC Health is actively advocating for more services to be provided in the west, and in particular the need to address addiction.” For assistance, visit www.ipchealth.com.au, call IPC on 9296 1228 or email your referral to AODServices.Intake@ipchealth.com.au.

Long walk to honour lost mum By Alesha Capone Wyndham’s Chantelle McWilliam will walk 63 kilometres next month in memory of her beloved mother Sandra. Chantelle will participate in the Remember September campaign to raise funds and awareness for PanKind, The Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. The campaign asks those involved to remove something such as sugar or alcohol from their diet, or alternatively walk 63 kilometres during the month of September, to honour the 63 Australians who die from pancreatic cancer each week. Chantelle’s husband Glynn and her younger sister Jasmine are also taking part in Remember September. Chantelle said her mother died last year about five months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Only a few months before Sandra died,

“She said: ‘You will know we’re close when you see two butterflies dancing close together,’” Chantelle said. Sure enough, on a walk after her mother died, Chantelle witnessed two butterflies flying close together among some yellow flowers. “It was beautiful,” she said. Chantelle has named her Remember September fundraising campaign “Sandra’s Butterfly”. She hopes to raise $1200 for PanKind. “If I get even half of that I will be happy,” she said. Chantelle said she would encourage other residents to support PanKind because cancer “can happen to anyone”. “It wasn’t until 2020 happened with everything that I realised no one is invincible,” she said. Hospital staff in isolation after COVID exposure Ninety-one Werribee Mercy Hospital staff have been furloughed since its emergency department was declared a tier-three COVID exposure site last week. A Mercy Health spokesperson said that a patient arrived at the hospital during the afternoon of Thursday, August 19 and was transferred directly from the ambulance bay through the emergency department to the hospital’s resuscitation bay. “The patient was treated as a suspected COVID-19 case, tested for the virus, and

returned a positive result,” the spokesperson said. “All staff and patients who were in the emergency department at the same time that the COVID-positive patient was in the adjoining resuscitation area are being notified by hospital staff. “They are being told to follow Department of Health directions to isolate and await advice from the Public Health Unit. “Given the extremely contagious nature of the COVID-19 Delta strain, we have taken a

cautious approach and furloughed all staff members who worked or passed through the emergency department and resuscitation area during the four-hour patient stay.” The spokesperson said on Monday that none of the furloughed employees have returned a positive COVID-19 test result. Werribee Mercy’s emergency department has undergone a deep clean, the spokesperson said. “Our hospital is still open and it is safe for patients to come to hospital for their regular

care and appointments.” “Our staff members are doing an exceptional job caring for our community and complying with all COVID-safe processes and procedures in the most difficult of situations.” The Eagle Stadium drive-through and indoor COVID vaccination site, announced by the state government last week, is set to open for booked appointments from Thursday. At almost seven years of age, young Point Cook resident Rheyansh is already a king among chess players. Rheyansh, who will celebrate his seventh birthday on August 29, placed first in the under-eight section of last month’s state youth chess championships. He was six years-old at the time of the event, which took place over two days before Victoria went into lockdown. Rheyansh said he has been playing chess for almost three years, after learning from family members including his older brother and parents. He now has lessons online, via Zoom, with

an international chess master from India. “I would like to become a chess grandmaster, but I know that it’s very hard,” Rheyansh said. Rheyansh belongs to the Wyndham Chess Club and the Melbourne Chess Club, where he is the youngest member. Alcohol harm in the spotlight By Alesha Capone Medical and health experts will gather in Wyndham for a conference on the harmful impacts of alcohol next month. Senior clinicians, GPs, mental health experts and other professionals will attend The Alcohol Harm Reduction – Benefits of Collaboration conference at the Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing on September 7. If the pandemic restrictions prevent the event from being held in person, it will be held online instead. A new study from Turning Point and Monash University, released this month, found ambulance call-outs for alcohol-related

harm rose by nine per cent, to 43,000 call-outs, across the state between January and September last year, compared to the same period in 2019. Turning Point executive clinical director Dan Lubman said the findings showed the extent that COVID-19 restrictions had on alcohol consumption within the community. “One of the things we identified was that the longer the lockdown went on, alcohol-related ambulance attendances increased,” Professor Lubman said. Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network region – which covers 13 municipalities including

Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank – recorded the highest number of people who engaged in treatment for alcohol-related issues in the nation, during the 12 months to July last year. Across the area, 5725 people received help for drinking (compared to 5220 people in the 2018-19 financial year). Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the municipality’s residents have faced many challenges in recent times. “With increasing anxiety, stress, job insecurity and pressure on relationships, it is no wonder alcohol consumption has increased,” she said. “Studies show high levels of alcohol

consumption can lead to serious and ongoing health problems.” Cr Hegedich said next month’s conference would feature Jack Nagle, a leading motivational speaker on drugs and alcohol. “The conference is a great opportunity for industry professionals including clinicians, mental health professionals, students and academics and those who work in the homelessness sector or family violence services to network and work more collaboratively,” Cr Hegedich said. Warning as snake season warms up Stewy the Snake Catcher has warned residents across the west that with spring approaching, snake season is about to start. The Wyndham-based snake expert, whose name is Stewart Gatt, is the official snake catcher contracted to Hobsons Bay and Brimbank councils. Mr Gatt said he usually attended 20 to 30 call-outs during the last fortnight of August. “We’ve already had two dozen calls in the last two weeks, so they (snakes) are out and about,” he said. “As the weather heats up, they wake up and go looking for food, for water and for a mate.” Snake season officially begins on September 1, the first day of spring. Mr Gatt said in the past two weeks he has attended call-outs in suburbs including Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing,

Point Cook, Albion and Deer Park. Mr Gatt said the calls have mostly been related to tiger snakes, plus a couple brown snakes and whip snakes. He said that as more houses are built on the fringes of Melbourne, in municipalities such as Wyndham and Melton, snakes are driven further out into paddocks or back towards suburbia. “We are getting lots of calls at the moment from people who are walking their dogs or because their dog started barking in the backyard,” he said. “I do recommend snake-aversion training for dogs, I don’t do it personally but it does seem to help. “If you hear your dog barking in the backyard, go out and check on it, don’t just yell at it.”

Mr Gatt said he was keen to remind people that snakes were protected by law across Australia. He said it was important for people who see a snake on their property to contact a licensed snake catcher and not try to deal with the reptile themselves. “Ring a snake catcher, even if it is just to get advice, they’re happy to help,” he said. “Around 95 per cent of people who are bitten are usually trying to catch or kill a snake.” Mr Gatt said people should brush up on first aid related to snake bites “as it may save your life”. Charity needs friends By Alesha Capone A Wyndham family is urging residents to get behind a charity named Friend in Me (FIM), which brings happiness to the lives of many children. Michelle and Ashley Edwards have five children aged between three and 13, who all live with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The family’s youngest, Lillian – an “active, cheeky girl” – was hospitalised at 15 months old. Lillian, who was born with larngomalacia, underwent surgery to fix her airways. After the operation, Lillian ended up in intensive care, battling influenza type A and parainfluenza. This led to Lillian being isolated, unable to be visited by her wider family, so that the illnesses would not spread. During this time, FIM delivered art supplies for Lillian to make a Father’s Day gift for her Dad. The charity aims to promote social inclusion and acceptance in children through sensory-friendly events, workshops and online programs. Ms Edwards said the FIM present made Lillian “so happy”. “We were stuck in her hospital room for days and she was so emotional,” Ms Edwards said. “It was the biggest smile she had shown in days.” Since then, Lillian’s siblings have attended FIM events including a party for another mother involved in the organisation, Grace Errante. “It meant so much to the children who aren’t invited to birthday parties often,” Ms Edwards said.

“They got to have fun with other kids who felt the same, whilst being equals and having important social interaction.” Because the pandemic has caused FIM’s usual fundraising activities to be cancelled, the charity has launched a campaign called #igiveacup to help raise $10,000. People are being encouraged to donate $5.20 per week to assist FIM, instead of buying a coffee.

Plea to help Afghan people Afghan-Australian community members and refugee groups are urging the federal government to do all it can to help the people of Afghanistan. Last week the Taliban captured the nation’s capital Kabul, 20 years after US forces removed them from power. A representative of the AfghanistanAustralian community in Melbourne, Farzan Ibrahimi, said the Taliban has promised it will respect women’s rights and not seek revenge upon anyone who worked for the Coalition. However Mr Ibrahimi, whose father was president of the Afghan Australian Association of Werribee, said there would likely be an increase in the number of people seeking to leave Afghanistan for humanitarian reasons. “We have got many people here in the west who are worried because of the circumstances in Afghanistan,” Mr Ibrahimi said. Mr Ibrahimi said it was important for governments across the world to use diplomacy to encourage the Taliban to be a responsible government. “When we talk of liberty, we are not trying to impose western liberal values on them, but something acceptable to people in other Muslim countries such as Indonesia or in the Middle East such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar or Jordan,” he said. The Settlement Council of Australia has urged the federal government to increase the number of humanitarian refugees available to people fleeing Afghanistan.

Letters written in hope By Alesha Capone Hoppers Crossing cafe Jock + Mack is running a Letter of Hope campaign during lockdown. The cafe’s team leader Stella Lillywhite first organised the letters initiative during lockdown last year. Customers can write a letter, a cheerful message or do a drawing to put into the Letter of Hope box inside the cafe. The letters will be distributed to residents of local aged care homes. People who contribute a letter or drawing can remain anonymous or use their first name.

Ms Lillywhite said the idea for the campaign came about after she caught up with an 80 year-old friend last year, who was feeling sad and isolated because she had not seen her children and grandchildren. “It got me thinking about the aged community,” Ms Lillywhite said. “I’m suffering from a bit of anxiety. “I know in a situation where I can help others, it helps me.” Ms Lillywhite said she thought the letters campaign “could being a little way of sunshine for someone’s day”. “It’s a way to inspire and re-light people’s

connections, remind people they are not alone and that people are thinking of them,” she said. Ms Lillywhite, who also manages Jock + Mack’s social media, has been sharing the colourful artwork children have submitted to the campaign online. “I’m hoping it will create a groundswell of support and create a wave of hope,” she said. Anyone living outside of a five-kilometre radius of the cafe who wants to contribute a letter to the campaign can post it to Jock + Mack, 31 Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing, 3029.

The $425,000 artwork, titled Backyard, was made by Jon Campbell. The 15-metre high sculpture depicts a game of cricket in a “stylised pop version” of Campbell’s childhood backyard in Altona. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the artwork “celebrates the joys of everyday life in the western suburbs”. The one-of-a-kind sculpture was commissioned and created as part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade. Campbell’s piece was picked for the roads project, from a number of submissions received, during an independent selection process. The sculpture has been delivered through a public-private partnership with Netflow and Major Road Projects Victoria, and is located alongside the Princes Freeway for commuters to view. The Western Roads Upgrade saw eight roads across Werribee, Point Cook, Truganina, Tarneit, Laverton North and Hoppers Crossing updated, as well as resurfacing work completed on 37 roads between Footscray and Werribee. Cyclists and pedestrians also have also benefited from more than 50 kilometres of new walking and cycling paths, plus three new overpasses along the Federation Trail. The Western Roads Upgrade was completed in March.

A 20-year maintenance program, that includes resurfacing, pavement repair, linemarking renewal and vegetation and drainage management, is now in place. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the Western Roads Upgrade was “the biggest ever single investment in Melbourne’s suburban road network, that will serve road users in the west for decades to come”. “What better way to mark this transformational project than with an eye-catching new addition to the urban landscape in the west?” Ms Allan said. Data shows that since the Western Roads Upgrade project was completed, drivers on Palmers Road are now saving 20 minutes during the morning peak, while upgrades to Leakes Road have shaved almost 12 minutes off the travel time to Tarneit train station.

Sliding to a new home Three Wyndham playgrounds destined for landfill will soon be bringing joy to the children of Manila, thanks to Wyndham council and the Hoppers Crossing Rotary Club. A Rotary International initiative, the Recycled Playgrounds Program, donates playgrounds earmarked for replacement in a First World nation to underprivileged countries. Under the program, Hoppers Crossing Rotary Club members have dismantled playgrounds from Flemington Crescent Park in Wyndham Vale, and Powell Drive Park and Central Park in Hoppers Crossing, to ship to the Philippines. Wyndham council will replace the play equipment at all three parks after it has been sent overseas. When the playgrounds are installed at schools or parks in Manila, a plaque acknowledging

Wyndham council’s donation will be placed alongside them. Wyndham’s climate futures and environment portfolio holder, Cr Robert Szatkowski, said the Recycled Playgrounds Program was a great way to repurpose community assets. “In the past, council would send old playground equipment to landfill,” Cr Szatkowski said. “This program allows these three Wyndham playgrounds to be utilised for another life cycle as well as saving on landfill and costs associated with their demolition. “We all know how important it is for children to be outside and active, and we’re thrilled that these playgrounds will bring a smile to the dials of young children in the Manila region.” Cr Szatkowski said the council hopes to donate more playgrounds to the Recycled Playgrounds Program in the future.

Connect with your neighbours By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has become the first municipality in the state to join Neighbourhood Watch Victoria’s Engage Network which aims to connect people, including those feeling isolated during the pandemic. Neighbourhood Watch Victoria chief executive Bambi Gordon said the network aimed to link residents with organisations, such as councils, businesses, social and community groups.

She said the reasons for people wanting to connect with organisations could be as varied as safety and crime prevention, to engaging with culture or leisure groups, making friends or to find a sports activity for children. “We also noticed in the pandemic there has been a real craving for connection,” she said. Ms Gordon said Wyndham was selected as the first council to join the network because the municipality already has 13 Neighbourhood Watch groups. She said Neighbourhood Watch has a “great relationship” with the council thanks to

Wyndham’s community safety portfolio holder, Cr Susan Mcintyre, who is a long-serving member of Neighbourhood Watch. Ms Gordon hopes all of Victoria’s 79 councils will eventually join the Engage Network. Cr McIntyre said community safety required a partnership approach between emergency services, local organisations and residents. “Wyndham city is always looking for ways to broaden and strengthen these partnerships,” she said.

“Given the work of Neighbourhood Watch already under way in Wyndham, the Engage Network was the perfect way to solidify that work. “Neighbourhood Watch groups do more than just look after safety, they help connect neighbours and contribute to the overall wellbeing of the community.” Ms Gordon said Neighbourhood Watch wanted to reach out to community groups and not-for-profit organisations that would like to get involved with the Engage Network. Animal portraits are a pet venture When Hoppers Crossing artist and graphic designer Jodie Beckley began painting portraits of her greyhound during lockdown last year, she had no idea that the creative past-time would take off to become a business. Ms Beckley said she was stood down from her job as a textile designer for seven weeks. “I was going a bit stir-crazy because I am not good at doing nothing, and I needed a little project,” she said. In addition to painting pictures of her dog Storm and her sister’s Newfoundland dog McGyver, Ms Beckley created watercolour images of the ex-racing greyhounds she fosters

as a volunteer with the Greyhound Adoption Program. After posting her artworks on social media, Ms Beckley began receiving so many requests from friends and family for custom pictures that she set up Pet Portraits by Copper Designs as an online business. She has quit her textile designer job, to save on the daily three-hour commute to work, and now paints custom portraits of pets, homes, landscapes and vehicles part-time while also working at Social Artist Werribee. “Pet Portraits is a great way for me to express myself and be creative,” Ms Beckley said. She creates the portraits from

high-resolution photos sent by clients from across Australia, America, Canada, Sweden and Belgium. “Definitely dogs are the most popular, followed by cats,” Ms Beckley said, In addition, she has painted horses, rabbits, guinea pigs and a snake. Ms Beckley, who is also a volunteer firefighter with the Hoppers Crossing CFA, said she would like to branch out and start painting people in the future. Advocate recognised for his positive contribution Hoppers Crossing advocate, artist and student Blake Jenner has been announced as the One Wyndham winner for August. Each month, Wyndham council presents the award to residents aged between 12 and 25 who positively contribute to the community and who are role models to other young people. Mr Jenner, 25, has volunteered in a range of mental health settings including workshops and webinars. He is also studying for a bachelor of social work. “I am absolutely loving it as it gives me chance to not only give back to the community that helped me but helped to create new pathways and new programs that have not been initiated yet,” he said. Mr Jenner has also exhibited his artworks, which explore the theme of social issues, in the western suburbs. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said Mr Jenner’s has displayed commitment and

MX-30 expands the Mazda range By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Released here in January 2021, the MX-30 is the latest model in the continually expanding Mazda SUV range. The name is a bit confusing given that previous cars with the MX prefix have been sporty coupes or convertibles, most notably the iconic MX-5. In this case it stands for Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X M Hybrid technology with the M indicating that it is a mild hybrid or MHEV. It joins the Mazda3 hatch and CX-30 SUV in offering the MHEV option. In April this year the MX-30 MHEV was joined by the MX-30 EV, the first ever pure electric vehicle from Mazda. Only 100 units have been allocated with delivery expected soon. Three variants of the MX-30 MHEV are offered: Evolve, Touring and Astina with prices ranging from $33,990 for the entry-level Evolve through to $40,990 for the top-of-range Astina. STYLING The first thing you notice about the MX-30 is its narrow grille, a big change from the large Mazda-family grille that’s been a feature across the Mazda range for some time. More of a grin than a guffaw this time. The profile follows similar lines to the CX-30 but with a slightly more coupe-like dip towards the rear. The most dramatic feature by far is the reverse-hinged rear doors. Called ‘freestyle’ by Mazda, but more colloquially ‘suicide doors’ by their critics, they were last seen here in the Mazda RX-8 sports car. The rear doors can only be opened when the front ones are open to provide a large single opening. However, we didn’t find any practical benefit from the format with access

to the rear seats quite awkward especially in cramped parking areas. Likewise, the ability to open the front doors to almost 90 degrees is useful but again care needs to be taken in tight areas. POWERTRAIN The MX-30 combines a 2.0-litre 114kW / 200 Nm petrol engine with a 24-volt battery sending power to the front wheels through a six-speed torque-convertor automatic transmission. As with other hybrid systems regenerative

braking recharges the battery for improved fuel efficiency, although at 6.4 litres per 100 km it’s only 0.1 litres lower than the identical engine in the petrol-only CX-30. DRIVING Apart from the extra torque the performance of the MX-30 is much the same as its CX-30 sibling. There’s nothing exciting about it but town it’s smooth, comfortable and quiet while it cruises easily in motorway conditions. Out on the open road ride quality and interior sound levels are excellent while coarse-chip surfaces do increase noise levels although not to the same extent as in others in this class. Handling is accurate and the steering wheel provides the right amount of feedback. SUMMING UP The Mazda MX-30 MHEV is the latest in a growing number of vehicles with mild hybrid powertrains on the Australian market and, as far as we’re concerned the jury is still out on whether they justify their higher prices. While the battery does provide some extra torque in the MX-30 it’s certainly not dramatic and, as mentioned previously, the fuel saving is minimal. So potential buyers need to decide whether they are willing to pay the extra $2400 for an MX-30 Evolve over the CX-30 Evolve. Alternatively, at around the same prices for the MX-30 Touring and Astina variants they could get the equivalent CX-30s but with a 2.5-litre engine and around 25 per cent more power and torque. Others may be happy to pay extra for the ‘EV’ badge on the number plates and Mazda’s commitment to environmentally-friendly components.

Wenzel-Halls’ big move to United Western United has got its man, with striker Dylan Wenzel-Halls making the move down to Melbourne to continue his A-League career. After speaking to Wenzel-Halls 12 months ago about joining the club from Brisbane Roar, the club has secured his signature for the next three seasons. Wenzel-Halls played 67 games across three seasons at the Roar, scoring 14 goals including seven last season. He said he was excited by the new challenge ahead of him. “It’s a really exciting and aspiring club,” he said. “There are a lot of good players at the club. The foundations are there with the board and staff. The biggest thing for me was how ambitious the club is and that they wanted me to be part of it.” Wenzel-Halls said the fact that the club had been keen on him for more than 12 months

was a major factor in his decision. He said he saw himself fitting in well with the United squad. “Western United has had interest in me for a while, they valued me and made me feel like they wanted me to be a part of their team,” he said. “They valued me when I was going well and scoring goals and they were still interested in me in the back half of the season when I wasn’t scoring goals. They’ve got world class players like [Alessandro] Diamanti and [Víctor] Sánchez. I think I’ll benefit from the service I get from them and I think it will help me improve my game.” He said he loves Melbourne and is looking forward to exploring it once the lockdown ends. Wenzel-Halls has been able to head to the club and get pre-season under way.

“Training by yourself is not fun,” he said. “I feel for everyone in Melbourne who have been through all the lockdowns. “It was a really welcoming reception [at the club]. The boys in the team have gotten around me and I’m going into a team with nice guys and nice footballers.” Wenzel-Halls already has experience of working with new coach John Alosi having worked together at the Roar. He said Aloisi brings a lot of professionalism and a clear idea of how to play. “He was one of the best strikers and I’m excited to get to work with him.” Wenzel-Halls said he was expecting the club to have some success. “We’ve got a good team, a lot of good players and looking to play a good brand and style of football. I’m expecting to do well and have success. I think that is achievable next season.”

Paralypian goes into bat By Goya Dmytryshchak Seabrook’s Jake Ballestrino, co-captain of Table Tennis Australia’s national para-squad, this week competes in his first match at the Tokyo Paralympics. The 30 year old’s journey to Tokyo started in country Victoria. “I started in 2013 and that was my first real tournament – played at the nationals in Ballarat – and one thing led to another,” he said. “Came away with a gold medal in the teams and that was the start of my journey in table tennis.” Ballestrino started playing right-handed but after breaking his arm he started playing left-handed and never went back. “Originally I was a righty … well I was a little bit ambidextrous anyway because at the time I didn’t have a backhand,” he said. “Then what happened was, I was playing for about 12 months and then broke my arm.

“I was playing footy, being a little bit silly. “Instead of sitting down for the required eight weeks, I went from right-handed to left-handed and kind of never looked back. “I pretty much stick to probably 95 per cent left now but I definitely do throw in a couple of right-handed serves because I’ve worked tremendously hard to get a backhand now.” Ballestrino said his favourite inspirational quote is: ‘I may not be there yet but I’m closer than what I was yesterday.’ “A few people through life have inspired me,” Ballestrino said. “I take a lot of inspiration from football players. “I’m a crazy Carlton supporter, so players like Anthony Koutoufides, Stephen Silvagni. “Probably the main reason why I’m actually in table tennis at all is through my dad. “He used to play years and years ago, and then we kind of just played around the house. “I draw a little bit of inspiration from him as well as having his kind of attitude towards life,

which is a ‘can do’ attitude, and that’s what I try to do. “That’s why that quote kind of speaks to me. Yeah, it’s great I’ve got plans, I’ve got aspirations and goals … but you’ve got to sometimes take a step back and [say] I may not be there yet but I am significantly closer than what I was yesterday. “It’s good to reflect, it’s good to remind yourself where you’re coming from and how far you have progressed, as well as knowing how far you have got left to progress.” At Tokyo, Ballestrino has goals of playing well and being proactive. “I like to think of myself as a bit of a chameleon,” he said. “If I need to be defensive, I can be defensive. “If I need to attack, I can do that. “I think a lot of players are going to be doing very similar type things so I need to be as good as I can be with my attack and starting on the front foot and getting in front and then improving my position.”

Montana Ham grew up in the backyard of her family home in Hillside playing kick-to-kick, tackling and wrestling with her two older brothers and her father. She loved playing in the mud and the rain but most of all she loved footy. Today, she is still living with that passion and doing everything possible to realise her dream of playing in the AFLW competition. “I love football it’s in my blood,” she said. “My teammates are my extended family. If I am having a bad day or a rough time, I get out with my footy family and escape it by having a kick and training hard.” The tall midfielder started footy when she was four, going to AusKick at Hillside. She was soon devastated to learn she had to wait another three years before she could tackle. Ham moved up the ranks playing for the Sharks’ under-10s and under-12s in the Essendon District Football League. She was the only girl in those teams, but it mattered little as she won a league best and fairest award in under-10s. “My teammates loved me because opposition players thought I was the easy beat and wanted to play on me,” Ham laughed, “That didn’t last long once the game started.” Ham moved to Keilor in 2013 to play in the first season of the Western girls under-13 competition, run by the EDFL and the Western Region Football League. Ham’s talent was quickly identified and she was selected in the interleague teams starting when she was 12. Having established herself as one of the stars of junior football, Ham was selected for the Western Jets’ NAB League girls team. Ham is the August winner of the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club Don Deeble Sports Star award. Future looks bright for Werribee By Tara Murray Werribee is proud of its Victorian Football League season despite a deflating end to a season that promised so much hope. With the latest lockdown continuing on longer than expected, Werribee’s hopes of a finals spot were dashed when the regular season was brought to an early end. Werribee coach Michael Barlow said there was a bit of sense of what might have been if they had the chance to continue the season. The side finished ninth, with the top eight teams playing finals, “It is a bit deflating for the club,” he said. “We were fairly confident in what we could put together. We are disappointed in the nature of the season that we couldn’t

put it all together.” With most of the group having not played football for 18 months heading into the season, Barlow said Werribee was given a quick reality check, with several sides having AFL-listed players. It meant the side was behind many of the other sides before the first siren. “That lack of continuity did show and it took two to three weeks of legitimate VFL fixtures to get that confidence up,” Barlow said. Barlow said the final win against the Northern Bullants was a good way to end the season. He said the positivity Werribee would take out of that would flow into next year. Chief executive Mark Penaluna said the club was really proud of the season. “Overall, from where we’ve come

and from the changing nature of the competition, as well as having a season off last year, and we’re playing against all the AFL clubs... to finish ninth with the fourth highest percentage is something to be really proud of,” he said. “We beat Richmond here by 80 points and had an average winning margin of 67 points. We lost three games by 10 points or less, we thought we were up for it.” For Penaluna, while it was good to see the playing group back on the field, some of the highlights had come behind the scenes. He said to be in and around the club in the hustle and bustle with each other’s company was enjoyable. “One of the nights that really struck a chord for me was when we invited the Werribee Districts under-14s to train on the oval before us.

“Each of the kids came in and joined as [coach] Michael Barlow did a players’ review and he got those kids to be involved in the review and talked through it. “There was just the whole sense of club and purpose.” He said having fans and volunteers back at the club was also special. Both Barlow and Penaluna are busy behind the scenes planning for next season. “A lot of the stuff we’re doing is really exciting,” Barlow said, who will do his first full pre-season as coach. “We’ve got a good framework for next year. We have learnt along the way and we want to improve the program. We’ll have some announcements in the foreseeable future about players re-signing. “For me half the work is getting the right people in place and I feel like we do.”
