Lockdown fears grow

By Tara Murray Fears the latest COVID-19 lockdown could extend beyond a second week are growing as case numbers in Melbourne continue to increase.

There were 22 new cases in Melbourne on Monday with the outbreak spreading across multiple suburbs.

Of the 22 cases, 17 are linked to known outbreaks, while 14 have been in isolation throughout their infectious period.

There are currently 205 active cases in Victoria.

On Sunday, Premier Daniel Andrews said that he still didn’t know what the state’s position would be on Thursday when lockdown is meant to end, but there weren’t good signs.

“There are far too many cases, firstly,” he said.

“There are a number of mystery cases and those numbers continue to grow, and that’s really challenging.”

Mr Andrews also expressed his frustration at a number of parties and social gatherings that were happening, with a number of people not complying with the restrictions.

Locally, the Caroline Springs outbreak continues to grow.

On Sunday there were three new cases linked to the outbreak at the CS Square Shopping Centre.

The new cases are household contacts of people connected to YPA Real Estate and the Jolly Miller Cafe.

The outbreak is related to a staff member who worked at the Spectacle Hub in the shopping centre while infectious.

All staff who worked at the centre between August 2 and 5 have been classified as tier one contacts and are isolating.

The whole centre is listed as a tier two site between July 27 and August 6, while a number of stores are also listed as tier one sites.

A number of other shopping centres, including Brimbank Shopping Centre, Watergardens, Keilor Central, Taylors Hill Village, Central West Shopping Centre, Cairnlea Town Centre and Burnside Hub Shopping Centre are listed as exposure sites.

COVID vaccine access expanded

By Tara Murray Under-40s will now be able to get the AstraZeneca vaccination at state-run clinics in the west.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Friday that the state government will expand the roll-out of access to the AstraZeneca vaccine for under-40s to all state run clinics.

“We’ve seen young Victorians turn out in their thousands with AstraZeneca now available for 18 to 39-year-olds in state vaccination hubs – we need Victorians of all ages to mirror that enthusiasm and get vaccinated as soon as they can,” Mr Andrews said.

“The Victorian government is significantly expanding access to the vaccine for this age group across all of our AstraZeneca state vaccination centres, and capacity is being scaled up across the state-run system with more drive-through and mobile clinics.

A Department of Health spokesperson said

the department was working with councils, health services and community organisations in the western suburbs to ensure every eligible Victorian who wants a vaccine will be able to get one.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the council was working with the department to establish additional vaccination sites across the municipality for eligible people in the community.

Caroline Springs is one of the areas of concern for the government, with an outbreak linked to the CS Square Shopping Centre.

“I’m pleased that so many people have been proactive in getting tested and helping to reduce any further risk of transmission,”

she said. “The safety of our community is council’s priority and I’d really like to thank everyone who is doing their part by adhering to the expert health advice.”

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said the council was working to ensure that residents have access to vaccination and testing sites.

“Brimbank continues to support and promote the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out and ongoing testing for COVID-19,” she said.

“Brimbank will continue to offer support to ensure an effective roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination program.

“It’s disappointing that Australia is so far behind with the roll-out, almost last in the developing world.”

Young artist paints for good cause Four-year-old Chrysta Victoria’s artistic talents have been put to a good cause, with her artwork being auctioned to raise money for charity.

Her mother Jo decided to try and focus Chrysta Victoria’s energy on being creative during lockdown as she struggled with missing her grandparents and other family members.

“Keeping creative, we forgot the world around us, and our time together was nothing short of blissful,” Jo said.

“We also focused on gratitude and learned how some children do not own a paintbrush, paint, or even paper.

“With a kind smile, Chrysta asked if we can help these children, so we agreed to sell her art pieces and donate all proceeds to ‘Paradise 4

Kids’ where we know every cent goes towards helping those less fortunate and in need.”

An online auction was held with Chrysta Victoria, who lives in Brimbank, selling all seven pieces of her work and raising $185 in the process.

The winning bids will also receive a video of Chrysta Victoria completing the piece they have purchased.

Nearly 19,000 refugees and asylum seekers on temporary visas will lose their jobs because of the current economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic according to a new report.

The report released by the Refugee Council of Australia said the pandemic had led to increased unemployment, underemployment and financial stress for many Australians.

“Because many refugees and asylum seekers are employed in low-income and insecure jobs, they are particularly vulnerable to the effects of a recession,” the report said.

“Unemployment rates among bridging, safe haven enterprise and temporary protection visa holders are projected to rise from approximately 19.3 per cent to 41.8 per cent.

“For those that remain employed, weekly wages could fall by an average of $90 per week, with 92 per cent of workers earning less than the minimum wage.”

The report said that refugees and asylum seekers who become unemployed and live below the poverty line, are at higher risk of poor health and homelessness, along with increased hospital admissions for mental health conditions, heart attack or stroke, injury and drug overdose, self-harm and other socioeconomic factors.

Higher unemployment levels are expected to lead to increased demand on the public health system that is projected to cost state and territory governments an additional $23.4 million per year.

Ambulances diverted as hospitals battle staff shortages COVID-related staff shortages resulted in ambulances being diverted away from two Western Health hospitals for a number of days last week.

Western Health chief executive Russell Harrison confirmed on Wednesday that ambulances were being diverted away from Sunshine and Footscray hospitals for “approximately 24 hours.”

There is a possibility that could be extended.

Both hospitals still accepted emergency department presentations during that time.

Mr Harrison said the decision was

supported by Ambulance Victoria and the Department of Health.

“As a result of high numbers of community exposure sites across the region where a large number of our staff live, there are now more than 280 staff furloughed across the hospitals and services we run,” he said.

“About 50 of those staff are furloughed due to the exposure sites within the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital.

“Western Health is working to minimise the impact on patients with the support of

other hospitals and health services across the metropolitan network.”

Ambulance Victoria union secretary Danny Hill said while it was the right decision, it put pressure on other nearby hospitals.

“They don’t have enough staff,” he said.

“It overwhelms other hospitals and sends more people to other hospitals like Werribee.

“It leads to ramping and delays in attending other cases.”

Mr Hill said there needs to be reserve staff to fill shifts, but with many hospitals already

having a shortage of staff, it makes it hard to fill shifts.

“We have to protect healthcare workers,” he said.

“This is what happens when [COVID-19] gets into a hospital. This is why it is so important for everyone to get vaccinated.”

Western Health has also temporarily paused walk-in vaccinations at Sunshine Hospital due to the high number of exposure sites in the west.

A tail wagging new friendship A Deer Park man’s selfless gesture has given another man a new best friend.

When dog breeder Tony Kujundzija was asked by a mate whether he had a dog that he could give to a man whose dog had died, he didn’t hesitate.

Fellow dog breeder Mark Locke said when he contacted Tony he was happy to help out Vince, who lives on the other side of the city.

“Another mate and I used to go down to the park and there was an old german shepherd down there and we would end up talking to his owner,” Mark said.

“He lives in a van and has been in the van for a number of years. Being a breeder myself, I said one time if he ever wanted another pup after his dog died, I would give him one but he said he didn’t think he could have another dog around him.

“When his dog died and he decided that he couldn’t live without a dog. I didn’t have one at the time, so I rang up Tony and asked if he could help out.”

Mark said that Tony had a dog that he was planning to keep for himself, but was happy to help out a mate and someone who needed it.

“Tony got the pup fully vaccinated,” he said.

“Giving it to Vince was a beautiful moment.

It’s a spark back into his life and the dog is going to have a great life.

“He will dote on him and there’s a local vet

who helps him out.”

Tony said Mark and his mate deserved the credit as well for setting it all up.

“My mate told me about it and him needing a bit of a helping hand,” he said.

“We wanted to help each other out and it’s a good will gesture. If I can help anyone I will, hopefully it will come back at the end of the day.”

Positive ‘flower power’ Hillside’s Ann Wallace-Burleigh never saw her breast cancer diagnosis as a death sentence.

Diagnosed in 2008, Ms Wallace-Burleigh tried to take a positive approach to her treatment.

“I got it, I dealt with it and I got over it,” she said. “I was one of the lucky ones to get through it with not too many hiccups along the way. I never thought I was going to die. I dealt with it through humor.

“I want people to know they can get through it, there’s a lot of different treatments out there.”

An average of 951 people diagnosed with cancer in Brimbank each year, according to Cancer Council data.

In 2020, 249 people living in Brimbank were supported by the Cancer Council.

Ms Wallace-Burleigh, who lived in Sunshine through her cancer battle, held Girls Night In for 10 years to help raise money for the Cancer Council.

Having used the council hotline during her battle, the fundraiser was her way to help others who might be going through what she went through.

Ahead of Daffodil Day on August 27, the Cancer Council is encouraging Victorians to use their ’Flower Power’ to make a positive impact on the lives of people affected by cancer by donating to fund vital cancer research.

Due to COVID-19, the Cancer Council lost close to $15 million in fundraising revenue in Victoria last year.

Fatal overdoses ‘devastating’

By Tara Murray Brimbank recorded the most fatal drug overdoses in 2020, according to a new Coroners Court of Victoria report.

The Victorian Overdose deaths report for 2011 to 2020 is the first in a planned series of regular public reports on overdose deaths data from the court, aimed at supporting drug harm reduction initiatives in the community.

The court found that there were 4551 overdose deaths in Victoria between 2011 and 2020, with 526 deaths in 2020.

The highest number of deaths was recorded in 2018, with 543 overdose deaths recorded across the state, according to the report.

- Jayne Nelson Over the 10 year period, there were 183 overdose deaths in Brimbank.

Only Yarra (222), Melbourne (216), Port Phillip (203) and Geelong (201) had more overdose deaths over the 10 years.

Last year, there were 28 fatal overdoses in Brimbank, the highest in the state and the highest total in Brimbank during the reporting period.

The report found that men were more likely

to die of a drug overdose, accounting for about two-thirds of all deaths.

The 35-44 and 45-54 age groups recorded the highest number of deaths, while there were more fatal drug overdoses in metropolitan areas than rural.

The report said that pharmaceutical drugs remained the most frequent contributors to Victorian overdose deaths, playing a role in just over three-quarters of all deaths.

Of the illegal drugs, heroin played a role in the most overdose deaths each year, but the impact of methamphetamine has increased each year.

The report also indicated it was too early to tell whether the COVID-19 pandemic would

have a major impact on overdose deaths, with overall overdose death frequencies presented in this data showing little direct evidence.

IPC Health chief executive Jayne Nelson said the organisation focused on improving quality of life for the people and communities it serves by maximising access to health and wellbeing services.

“Drug overdose is a devastating problem,” she said. “As the population grows rapidly in the west of Melbourne, there are more people in need of local community based health and wellbeing services.

“IPC Health is actively advocating for more services to be provided in the west, and in particular the need to address addiction.”

Business grants open Start-ups and small businesses in Brimbank are being encouraged to apply for council’s business grants program.

The council has committed $200,000 through the program to support start-ups and small businesses to adapt to the impacts of COVID-19 and strengthen their businesses.

The program includes small business grants of up to $10,000 for small businesses that are at least 12 months old and operate in Brimbank, to support their adaption to COVID-related challenges and business growth to expand the local economy.

The second part of the program is for start-ups, with grants of up to $2000 available. These grants are to help with common start-up costs, including fees, registrations and equipment.

Mayor Ranka Rasic said the council is aware that businesses need all the support they can get at the moment.

“As a small business owner myself, I know first-hand the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

“The Brimbank business grants will support local start-ups and small businesses to adapt to the impacts of COVID-19 and strengthen their businesses.

“I encourage start-ups and small businesses to put in their applications at the earliest.”

Applications are open until September 15, with applications funded as they are received.

A new exhibition at Sunshine Plaza is shining the light on stories of local people and the great work they do. The Faces of Sunshine explores the diverse and inspiring stories of those who reside in the west.

Charles Sessay’s story is one of those that is on display.

Mr Sessay has been championing for the western Melbourne community of migrant and refugee women by effectively combating unemployment rates as chief executive of a local, volunteer-run not-for-profit, Kontiki Cultural Womens’ Empowerment.

The group was launched in 2012 and now operates out of Sunshine Plaza, with the aim of up-skilling and empowering refugee and migrant women.

“The goal of Kontiki is to build the capability of women of all ages from refugee and migrant backgrounds, bring them together, get them socially connected and also give them skills,” Mr Sessay said.

Mr Sessay also works alongside the Victorian Multicultural Commission in supporting refugees and migrants throughout COVID-19.

With the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in many refugees and asylum seekers on temporary visas losing their jobs, the group’s work is even more important, he said, The exhibition will be on display throughout August and can also be viewed via Sunshine Plaza’s social media.

Worrying trend as ambulance waiting times balloon Brimbank residents are waiting longer for an ambulance, with waiting times blowing out in the past 12 months according to new data.

Ambulance Victoria’s (AV) performance data for the June quarter revealed that waiting times in Brimbank for both code one and two incidents had increased in the year to June 30.

Seventy-seven per cent of code one cases were responded to within the benchmark of 15 minutes in the June quarter, down from 89 per cent 12 months earlier.

The average waiting time for a code one incident increased to 13.04 minutes in June, 2021, up from 10.22 minutes in June, 2020.

The number of code one cases grew slightly from 2225 in June, 2020, to 2690 in June, 2021.

For code two cases, Brimbank residents are waiting on average nearly an extra 17 minutes on the previous 12 months.

In the June 2021 quarter, the average waiting time for a code two response was 37.29

Just 73.1 per cent of code one cases had an ambulance arrive within the 15-minute response time target.

“There were 84,441 code one cases in [the June] quarter compared to 66,906 in the same quarter the previous year,” he said.

“That increased workload is having a massive on effect on our members and a lot are hitting burnout.

“Paramedics and ambulance workers are exhausted. There is no downtime, they are regularly missing meal breaks and are working dangerous amounts of incidental overtime”.

The union said that sick leave is at an all-time high, which left many stations resourced.

The union has called for patients to look after their health in a bid to reduced the number of people needing to call an ambulance or present to an emergency department.

Brooklyn fire station now open

By Goya Dmytryshchak Flags have been raised at the new $9.5 million Brooklyn fire station.

The station, at the northern end of Millers Road, replaces the decommissioned Spotswood station.

Acting Fire Rescue Commissioner Ken Brown said the new station had upgraded facilities, maximising emergency responses for the community.

“Fire Rescue Victoria is delighted that Brooklyn fire station (Fire Station 45) is now operational,” he said. “The new station will improve safety in Melbourne’s growing western suburbs, providing additional

resources to respond to a range of emergencies.

“Today, our highly trained firefighters not only attend structure fires but also undertake complex road rescues, provide emergency medical care and contain HAZMAT incidents.

“Brooklyn fire station has been designed with environmental best practice in mind, including with a state-of-the-art diesel emissions system.

“The station will serve Brooklyn and the wider western suburbs and this is a fantastic outcome for the community.”

The station can accommodate a crew of eight and two trucks. The site also has an office building for the Fire Rescue Victoria western district command office.

Williamstown MP Melissa Horne said the modern station would help firefighters protect the community.

“We’re providing our hardworking firefighters with the resources and facilities they need to keep the Victorian community safe and we’re excited to see the new state-of-the-art Brooklyn station now operational,” she said.

“Our local fire services do an excellent job keeping property and lives safe, and a new modern station will mean they can continue this work long into the future.”

Outdoor lounge plan sparks library concern

The Keilor Historical Society says a new outdoor lounge at the Keilor Library will take away from the fundamental use of the facility.

Brimbank council is planning to build a lounge at the library after recently receiving government funding, with community consultation currently taking place.

The council first proposed the lounge in 2014, but it has twice been delayed due to budget constraints.

Historical society president Susan Jennison said there were more important things that needed to be addressed at the library.

She said the outdoor lounge doesn’t fit in with the rest of the village, which they have strived to maintain.

“We’ve had to fight to keep the library,” she said.

“The library is open for less hours than the other libraries in Brimbank. [Council] needs to look at extending the hours and extending the collection of books available.

“There are minimal books at the library, especially on local history. [The lounge] will not enhance the fundamental principles of what a library is for.”

Ms Jennison said she had been told community consultation, which was due to be held on Thursday, only gave residents the opportunity to talk about two designs and no general conversation.

She also questioned why council would consider building something outdoors when Melbourne’s weather was unpredictable and there is a park around the corner.

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said there had been years of consultation starting in 2014 when the Keilor office building community consultative committee was formed.

The council has no plans to extend operating hours once the new area is constructed.

“Extensive wider stakeholder engagement was also conducted at the time,“ Cr Rasic said. “During these consultation activities council received feedback in support of an expanded library and an outdoor space.

“Council is currently seeking community feedback over a four-week period on the design and draft plan for the new outdoor lounge space.

“The new outdoor lounge will enhance the current library offering to the community.

It will provide flexible learning, recreation and playful spaces that support a range of activities and multiple seating, study, creative play, recreation and reading areas.

“We are listening to our community and delivering on outcomes that will benefit all of Brimbank. I am very proud of this project and look forward to its completion and the benefits it will bring to the local community.”

Investigators have been told credit cards were stolen from vehicles in Avondale Heights, Keilor East and Moonee Ponds and used in deceptions totalling about $5000 at various convenience stores including in St Albans, Braybrook and Sunshine.

Police have released images of three men they want to speak to. All three men are perceived to be Indian in appearance, with two in the their mid-20s and the third in his early-30s.

The centre was named the LSV Swim and Survive Partner of the Year.

Sunshine Leisure Centre received the award due to the many positive changes its made to its swimming lesson program and staff retention program during 2020.

Automotive fanatic recognised A Deer Park automotive technician has been recognised at the Kangan Institute’s class of 2021 international student graduation.

Sudhish Burtony, who works at Western Ford in Deer Park, was one of two automotive students originating from Mauritius to win an outstanding international student award for automotive.

The 21-year-old moved from Mauritius to Melbourne to join his family.

Automotive studies was a natural progression for the self-professed auto fanatic.

“Automotive was always my passion and I feel really happy to get this award,” he said. “It shows that my teachers have noticed the hard

Mr Burtony, who lives in Donnybrook, was one of 26 students recognised during the online graduation ceremony covering a number of study fields.

Kangan Institute chief industry engagement and education delivery officer Arron Wood said the ceremony was an important celebration of student success and achievement attained despite challenges arising from COVID-19

impacts over the past year.

“Graduating is something to be very proud of, and especially so for our class of 2021 international students, who successfully completed their studies whilst navigating the impacts of the global pandemic, both here and in their home countries,” Mr Wood said.

“These students are now armed for career success with skills, knowledge and a qualification that is valued by tertiary institutions and employers. We’re honoured to have played a part in their education and wish them the best in their next steps.”

New kinder for Deanside A two-room kindergarten will open at Deanside Primary School at the start of next year when the new school opens its doors to families.

The new 66-place kindergarten, currently under construction on the Conservatory Drive school site, will provide for three-andfour-year-old kinder until a future permanent kindergarten is built on an adjacent Melton council property.

It follows a state government pledge that every new Victorian primary school will have a kindergarten either on-site or next door, avoiding the need for a “double drop off” for parents in different locations.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the council has contributed $250,000 towards the project.

“A permanent community centre and neighbourhood house, including kindergarten, has been proposed and is expected be operational around 2026,” she said.

This year’s Avalon International Airshow has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The not-for-profit AMDA Foundation Limited, which organises the biennial airshow and Aerospace and Defence Exposition at Avalon airport, last week announced that the “increased uncertainty created by the impacts of the Delta variant of COVID” has led to the cancellation.

The airshow, which was to be held from December 3 to 5, usually attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

This year’s airshow would also have coincided with the RAAF’s 100th year of service in Australia.

However, AMDA Foundation chief executive Ian Honnery said that “in order to minimise uncertainty and disruption to attendees and participants, the difficult decision has been taken now that AVALON 2021 will not go ahead”.

Mr Honnery said it was “deeply disappointing” for the AMDA Foundation team, its stakeholders, exhibitors, participants and patrons that the 2021 airshow and expo could not proceed.

“But public health and safety must be paramount and responsible levels of certainty must be achieved for all involved in or attending such a complex and multi-faceted major event,” he said.

Mr Honnery said it while the airshow would not be held this year, the AMDA Foundation was already preparing for the next one, which will be held between February 28 and March 5, 2023.

Blood donors urged to give

By Benjamin Millar Federal Ballarat MP Catherine King has joined growing calls for the controversial Western Victoria Transmission Network Project to be scrapped, labeling it a “disaster” of a project.

Ms King, the Opposition spokeswoman for infrastructure, transport and regional development, has demanded proponents of the high-voltage project go back to the drawing board to avoid impacting communities and farming land along the 190-kilometre route from western Victoria through Mooraboool and on to Sydenham.

“We know that this is a disaster of a project particularly for our agricultural communities, but also for the communities around Bacchus Marsh and Darley,” she said.

“This is the wrong area for these lines to go in and there needs to be a plan B, a plan B that doesn’t put a transfer station right into the middle of our agricultural heartland and doesn’t take these transmission lines right the way through the Lerderderg Gorge, one of our most beautiful natural assets in this region.”

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has identified the transmission project as necessary for bringing renewable energy from the state’s west to Melbourne.

But the project has been subject to fierce resistance from the community and is opposed by Moorabool council, with calls for the lines to be buried underground.

State Moorabool MP Michaela Settle has called for the proposal to be sent back to the drawing board, writing to AEMO to ask for all other options to be investigated including undergrounding and alternative routes.

“It has united Labor and Liberal MPs, tourism operators, the Victorian Farmers Federation, big businesses like McCain, residents in suburban growth areas and those in regional farming communities,” she said.

“It’s increasingly clear to all of us that the

northern corridor proposed to build the transmission lines and the transfer station at Mount Prospect is simply unviable and that it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

“AEMO, AusNet and state and federal governments, who need to sign off on this project, need to start again.”

With a continuous need for blood donations, the Australian Red Cross is reminding people that donating blood is among the reasons people can leave home during lockdown.

Blood and plasma donations are classified as an essential service and are exempt from all travel restrictions and stay at home orders. Australian Red Cross Lifeblood spokesperson Erin Lagoudakis said the organisation needed donations more than ever.

“Lockdowns don’t stop the need for blood – there are patients in hospital who need blood and are relying on people to donate,” she said.

“Immediately following Victoria’s previous lockdown announcement, Lifeblood saw more than 45 per cent of Victorian donation bookings cancelled, so we take this opportunity to remind donors they are essential.

“Our donor centres remain places of wellness, and we need your help to keep Australia’s lifeblood flowing.”

Ms Lagoudakis said the Red Cross took additional measures to ensure the safety of blood donors, including masks for staff and donors, wellness checks, increased cleaning, restriction of non-donating visitors at the centre and implementing social distancing.

“Those who are feeling well, not waiting on test results or required to isolate are encouraged to donate,” Ms Lagoudakis said.

I’ve heard heartbreaking stories from small business owners shutting down, casual workers being laid off, families struggling with bills and remote schooling, people who live alone feeling trapped and abandoned, elderly people fearful for their health and our youth struggling with anxiety and loneliness.

But I’ve also heard inspiring stories of neighbours exchanging veggies and flowers from their gardens, snail-mail care packages sent back and forth across the 5km mark and offers of free help on Facebook community groups. The lovely people of the City

of Melton are really proving we have what it takes to stick together and get through these difficult times.

Council’s 2021/2022 Budget featured our largest ever capital projects investment, $153.5 million. We’ve funded upgrades and traffic lights along Taylors Road at Westwood Drive, Sinclairs Road and Plumpton Road, the redevelopment of the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve and Stage Two of the MacPherson Park redevelopment project. We’ve also provided households with an additional At Home Hard Waste Collection and green FOGO (Food Organics. Garden Organics.) kerbside bin.

Finally, I’m pleased to advise that I, along with my fellow Councillors, recently met with Dr Niki Vincent, The Public Sector Gender Equity Commissioner, and have invited the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner, Ro Allen, to attend a Council Briefing, to discuss the Gender Equality Act 2020, to determine what impact the new legal definitions of sex and gender will have on Council services and facilities, such as communal toilets and changerooms.

MY PLACE Tia Suemai is the executive director and co-founder of Charis Mentoring which runs programs and workshops aimed to assist Pasifika Youth to find themselves while living in a confusing world. He talks to Tara Murray.

Brimbank is my home where I I live with my beautiful wife, Taua, and our three lively kids, Seutia (seven), Tai (four) and my princess Leata-Ana (three).

I coach rugby at the Brimbank Rugby Union Club in Deer Park and I attend IJNC church in Albion. We have based our organisation in the heart of Sunshine and have worked in local schools for over six years, particularly in St Albans .

What is your favourite thing about the Brimbank community?

My favourite thing about the Brimbank community is the people. You will not find a more welcoming, progressive and passionate community who will support you, walk with you and share with you. Brimbank is such a melting pot of cultures, talent, diversity and amazing food.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Brimbank?

Brimbank has some of the best and groovy little cafes around Melbourne. My ultimate favourite to eat is a great a little coffee shop with Wayne and his team at Three Zero Two Zero in Ardeer. In my opinion they have the best expresso and juice bar.

Tell us about the Pasifika community in Brimbank and the work you do with Charis Mentoring?

The Pasifika community in Brimbank is made of many Pacific Island nations i.e. Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands, Tokelau and Niue (just to name a few) under the umbrella term Pasifika. Some have lived in Brimbank for over 50-plus years, and are proud to call Australia home. Many have contributed positively and significantly to society. A perfect example is the genesis and the story of the Brimbank Rugby Union Club and how the community came to together to find a solution to tackle serious issues concerning the safety of all young people and the safety everyone in the community, made possible with the support of local key leaders, the police and sports bodies.

We deliver, school Pasifika mentoring programs, re-integration pathways for most our vulnerable young people, youth-led, leadership and community projects and Pasifika cultural competency training and professional development.

What do you hope to achieve with your work with Charis Mentoring?

Our hope and vision at Charis Mentoring is to see every young person in their element serving and leading the way. Our Pasifika young people are the change makers and we all responsible for building forward together.

Pandemic house design rethink Homebuyers are prioritising amenity and comfort as families spend more time at home. Alesha Capone finds out how the COVID-19 pandemic has altered design trends for new homes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to different design trends emerging as priorities for many who are buying and building a new home.

Since March last year, developers have noticed people are looking for ways to maximise amenity and comfort as they spend more time at home, particularly during traditional working and schooling hours.

Peet Limited chief executive and managing director Brendan Gore said the company was seeing requests made to its builders “to ensure homes become a workplace, an escape and a spacious family-friendly zone”.

He said the houses at Peet’s newest display village in Newhaven, Tarneit, have been built to reflect this vision.

Representatives from two building companies with homes in the display village – Langdon Building and Simonds Group – said they have seen a rise in requests for more space in new residences to cater for families.

Simonds Homes national design manager Dave Clynk said interest in play areas and separate areas for parents and children has grown.

“Growing families are looking for more private spaces for family connection,” he said.

“The need for an indoor-outdoor connection, where the internal living areas blend seamlessly with the outdoors, has also never been more popular.”

Langdon sales manager Tamara Chan said homes with parent, child and family zones were popular.

“Older kids and teenagers often retreat to their bedrooms, so having separate space for gaming, theatre, or streaming entertainment comes in handy,” she said.

“Over the past month I’ve also seen increased inquiries for large single-storey and small lot double-storey homes, showing the need for space, and a home that has separate breakout areas.”

“The need for a guest bedroom with an ensuite has largely stemmed from the rise of multiple generations of family members living under the same roof,” Mr Clynk said.

He said many families were looking for home offices to be incorporated into their future houses.

Burbank’s head of research and design, Damjan Jeremic, said the home office “is making a comeback”.

“What we found pre-COVID, for a lot of customers with smaller homes, they did not want a dedicated study space – we could always provide study nooks as an option,” Mr Jeremic said.

However, he said studies with a doorway entry were now incredibly popular with people

who worked from home and needed to be able to take work calls or engage in online video meetings, away from the noise generated by the rest of their household.

“Definitely since the pandemic, we have found a lot of people want a study with a door that can shut,” he said.

Mr Jeremic said a “study nook space” incorporated into a kitchen or family living area, which could cater as a work area or a spot for home-schooling, was another popular option.

He said Burbank was now offering inbuilt desks for study nooks, allowing homebuyers to select a surface that matches the laminate on their kitchen benches.

When it comes to smaller properties, AVID Property Group said there was still a strong

demand for townhomes in Victoria, often for first home buyers wanting to get their foot on the property ladder.

AVID general manager Victoria, Peter Vlitas, said that during the past 12 months, the company has launched 10 individual townhome projects on the Melbourne market, the majority of which sold out within the first week.

“One of the reasons we’re finding townhomes are becoming so popular is that there’s no backyard to maintain,” Mr Vlitas said.

“Our landscaped parks, walking tracks and recreational facilities within the master planned community offer such a high-quality outdoor environment and essentially replaces the conventional backyard.”

Disappointing season for the struggling Bears Burnside Heights will reassess and regroup after a disappointing 2021 Essendon District Football League division 2 season.

After a first finals appearance in 2019, the Bears struggled to reach those heights this season, with the latest lockdown ending what small finals chances they had.

Bears president Justin Peagram said they just weren’t able to put it all together on the field.

He said on Thursday that he didn’t expect they would play again this season due to the latest lockdown.

The Bears currently sit in seventh with four wins.

“It’s been a mixed bag,” he said.

“We went into 2020 having signed a number of blokes and with a mixture of COVID and not playing football, some wanted to go back to previous clubs and some hung up the boots.

“We then recruited some good young kids, who will be really good in a couple years time but still finding their feet now.

“Every time we got going we would have a bye or a lockdown.

“We can not put our finger on one thing or another. We had a bad year and it’s disappointing.”

Peagram said injuries had taken a toll on the side.

He said there had been 11 or 12 ACL injuries across the club, with five of them in the senior men’s program.

He said combined with soft tissue injuries, they just didn’t have the depth to cover all the holes.

“When our captain Nick Morda went down, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“Against East Sunbury [their most recent game] we just couldn’t run the game out. We had players with injuries who weren’t quite right, but did the right thing by the club.

“We didn’t have the depth to give them an

extra week off.”

Peagram said one of the highlights for the club this season was the development of some of the younger players.

He pointed out off-season recruits Ferdinando Petrarca and Gabriel Cristiano, along with Bears junior Tyson Iglesias as being important going forward.

Peagram said if they don’t get the opportunity to play again, they would look to get the group together to finish the season properly.

“We need to get over the disappointment and sink our teeth into next season and come back stronger in 2022.”

Aidan Stott is set to coach the side again.

Peagram said while it had been a tough year on field, things were going really well off field.

The club’s main oval is being resurfaced and there’s plans to redevelop their second oval.

Aloisi’s plan for United

By Tara Murray New Western United coach John Aloisi is relishing being back on the pitch.

The former Socceroos star has returned to the coaching ranks for next season, having previously coached Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar.

Aloisi has hit the ground running since joining United a couple of weeks ago.

“It’s really enjoyable and it’s good to be back in coaching,” he said.

“You realise how much you miss it when you step foot back on the pitch again and start coaching.

“The guys have been really good and really receptive to what we are trying to do and so far it has been enjoyable.”

Aloisi is aware of the opportunity that he has at United to help the young club make it’s mark. He said those at the club share his ambitious vision.

“They have set a good foundation to help grow the club and there’s a lot of exciting things happening and a lot of potential within this football club,”he said.

“It’s a great opportunity not only for myself, but for everyone who’s involved with Western United. There is a lot of work to do, we know it’s a process.”

United finished 10th last season after playing finals in the first year.

Aloisi said the group took a lot out of the disappointing season.

It will be a slightly different looking squad this year with a number of changes, including Besart Berisha not returning.

The new signings include goalkeeper Jamie Young, Noah Botic, Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Ben Garuccio and Dylan Wenzel-Halls.

Aloisi said he was expecting to see fast-paced side.

“There’s definitely an opportunity,” he said.

“We still have some big names. Alessandro Diamanti is still here and some young players who have shown that they have got quality and we have signed a few experienced players.

“We will definitely have pace going forward with a lot of quick players and we will play an attacking brand of football. We will be very well organised as well.”

the young guys like Lachie Wales and Dylan Pierias, who have just returned from the Olympics.

He said those guys have the tools, it’s about taking them to the next level.

Josh Risdon, who had an injury interrupted season last year, has been one of the standouts in pre-season, while he expects Víctor Sánchez to be better for having a season in the competition.

In short time Aloisi has been at the club, he has been impressed with some of the young local talent on show.

“It’s unfortunate that the NPL has been in lockdown,” he said.

“A lot of have trained with us and there’s a lot of good young players, but it might take them a few years.

“There’s some who have already had a taste, Adisu Bayew who has been impressive so far and one of the younger boys Rhys Bozinovski has just signed a scholarship deal.

“There are some good signs for there.”

Aloisi first game as coach is meant to in the FFA Cup against Newcastle, but it has been postponed due to the pandemic.

The latest lockdown has brought an early end to the season for many Western Region Football League players.

With the lockdown going into a second week, it has seen a second round of matches cancelled.

In a statement last week, the league said it has examined the implications for each competition and made adjustments required. It means the men’s division 2 finals are scheduled to be played this weekend, with Wyndhamvale, Parkside, North Footscray and Newport finishing in the top four.

The two women’s divisions are also scheduled to start finals this weekend.

In division 1, Manor Lakes, Spotswood, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Centrals finished in the top four.

Junior finals are also currently scheduled to be played this weekend.

The division 1 and 3 men’s competitions are scheduled to conclude their home and away series this weekend.

The league said that the situation could continue to change due to the nature of the uncertainty with lockdowns.

“If we were to return to play the following weekend (August 21-22), matches fixtured for August 14-15 are effectively cancelled, with finals to commence across several competitions and, with any luck, more than one day’s notice/lead time,” the statement said early last week.

“The WRFL notes that while at this stage the adjustments are both relatively minimal and relatively conservative, if the current lockdown extends beyond the weekend of August 21-22, we will have effectively ‘run out of time’ and will need to consider what (if any) structural changes may be required to potentially condense the respective finals series for each competition into shorter timeframes.

The Essendon District Football League is yet to announce a decision on the state of play with its competition.

It’s three women’s divisions finals are scheduled to begin this weekend.

In premier division Keilor and Hillside are joined in the top four by Westmeadows and Oak Park, in division 1 it’s Moonee Valley, Strathmore, Sunbury Lions and Greenvale, while in division 2, Moonee Valley 2, Westmeadows 2, Coburg Districts and Maribyrnong Park 2 make up the top four.
