Creek art The natural beauty of Kororoit Creek is the inspiration behind a new exhibition.

Sunshine West artist Ursula Dutkiewicz’s multifaceted exhibition is set to begin on August 20, and will feature an array of work from the artist. “[It’s a] mixed-media show, so I’m doing photos, and I’m doing photo-collage – so I’ve used my photos to create a storyline of the creek – and there’s some poetry,” Dutkiewicz said.

The exhibition also shows what Dutkiewicz called a “community tree”, which includes images from the Friends of Kororoit Creek group.

Dutkiewicz said the Friends of Kororoit Creek’s work enabled her to see the natural beauty of the creek.

“I did a clean-up day and I got to meet the Friends of Kororiot Creek … I started noticing more birdlife. And I started doing their activities, and I noticed all of the birds,” she said.

“Then I started writing a few poems about the creek, and I decided I would do an exhibition about the creek.”

‘Home-a year in the life of the creek’ can be viewed at Hunt Club and Community Arts Centre, 775 Ballarat Road, Deer Park, Monday-Friday, 9.30am-4.30pm until October 7.

Exposure sites multiply

By Tara Murray Brimbank residents are on high alert as the number of COVID-19 exposure sites in the municipality and neighbouring suburbs continuing to grow.

The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital, several shopping centres and a school are among the local exposure sites identified by the Department of Health.

There are currently exposure sites in Braybrook, Caroline Springs, Derrimut, Deer Park, Burnside, Kealba, Keilor Downs, Eleven new COVID-19 cases were announced on Monday morning, which were all linked to known outbreaks.

The department listed a number of exposure sites at the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital on Sunday night.

The maternity assessment centre on level three has been identified as a tier one exposure site on August 6 between 8.15am and 2.45pm.

The Dorevitch Pathology on the ground floor of the hospital was also identified as a tier one site on the same day between 9.05am and 9.50am. Anyone who visited either site during those times must get tested and isolate for 14 days.

The cafe in the hospital’s main corridor has been identified as a tier two exposure site between 9.20am and 9.50am on the same day.

Anyone who visited the cafe at that time must

get tested and isolate until they get a negative result.

The remainder of the hospital is a tier three exposure site on August 6, between 8.15am and 2.45pm.

As of Sunday, seven cases had been linked to a Spectacle Hub in CS Square, including staff of neighbouring stores.

In a statement on social media, CS Square said that the site was a tier two site between July 27 and August 5, and anyone who had visited the centre during that time needed to get tested and isolate until they get a negative result.

Several locations are classified as tier one sites, with the centre closed for deep cleaning for much of Sunday.

Keilor Central said on its social media that a customer, who has since tested positive for COVID-19, visited the centre on August 4 between 4.45pm and 6.15pm and visited Aldi, Kmart and The Reject Shop.

Watergardens confirmed some its stores are a tier two exposure site, with a positive case attending ANZ between 9.55am and 10.55am on August 3, and House between 4.30pm and 5.45pm on the same time.

While not listed as an exposure site, parents of pupils at Kororoit Creek Primary School and kindergarten were informed of a positive case at school.

Low vaccine rate in north-west

By Michaela Meade Melbourne’s north-west region has been revealed to have the state’s lowest rate of COVID-19 vaccination, with eligibility and the nature of the workforce being flagged as potential reasons.

The federal government last week released data revealing vaccination rates across the country. In Melbourne’s north-west, 34.7 per cent of people aged 15 and over had received one dose while 15.6 per cent of people aged 15 and over are fully vaccinated.

Bendigo was revealed to have the highest

rate of people aged 15 and over with at least one dose, at 52.6 per cent.

Geelong had the highest rate of people aged 15 and over fully vaccinated, at 25.9 per cent.

North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network chief executive Chris Carter said there were a number of reasons for the low vaccine rate in Melbourne’s north-west.

“We have a younger population and a lot of people may not be eligible,” he said.

“The nature of the workforce essentially is essential service workers with jobs that involve long hours and getting time off work is really difficult.”

Altona North GP and Australian Medical Association state council chairman Mukesh Haikerwal said supply was one reason for the lag.

“We need more supply and we need more participation and we need more messaging so that people are actually prepared and geared up to do the vaccine and also prepared to take the vaccine,” he said.

Dr Haikerwal said there weren’t enough vaccination sites in the north-west.

“I think the issue is this: Wyndham’s the size of Canberra but hardly got any vaccination sites and people there have got very few doses.

“It’s a common problem across the north-west.”

Federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said the average age of the Wyndham community is 32 years.

“Sixty-four per cent of our community is below the age of 40 [years] and not eligible to be vaccinated yet,” Ms Ryan said.

“Instead of trying to blame lower socio-economic families or multicultural communities for vaccination hesitancy, [people] need to look at the … vaccination roll-out … 113,000 people I represent aren’t able to get their hands on the vaccine.”

Say ‘goodbye’ to COVID A new campaign is aiming to say goodbye to COVID-19.

The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has released a video which encourages people to get vaccinated.

The video shares the message in 21 different languages, as the NWMPHN tries to reach as many people in Melbourne’s north-west as possible.

NWMPHN chief executive Chris Carter said the network wanted to connect with the community and get the message out there.

“The area we cover is one of the most culturally diverse areas in Australia,” he said.

“We want to encourage the CALD [culturally and linguistically diverse] community to take up the vaccines and increase the overall vaccine effort.

“It’s relatively easy to do the messages in written form and translate, but we thought

we would get the personal engagement with having people speaking in other languages and share with their community.”

Professor Carter said NWMPHN had worked with 60 people to put the videos together to make sure they were getting the right message across.

He said the reaction so far had been really good.

“We’ve circulated it far and wide on Twitter, Facebook and social media.”

Professor Carter’s biggest message is to encourage people to talk to their doctor or health professional and work out what is best for them.

Fire prompts calls for action

By Tara Murray The Anti-toxic Waste Alliance has renewed its calls for greater action to prevent fires at waste and recycling centres.

On August 1, Fire Rescue Victoria crews were called to put out a rubbish fire at Cleanaway’s Brooklyn Resource Recovery Centre.

It follows a fire at the same site in January, which resulted in an advice warning being issued for 17 suburbs.

An Environment Protection Authority spokesperson said it was currently

investigating the cause and response to the fires in Brooklyn to determine whether any breaches of the Environment Protection Act have occurred.

The fire is the latest in a long line in Melbourne’s north-west in the last 12 months, including two in Hume last week.

The Kealba Landfill fire has been burning for more than 18 months, affecting many residents.

Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance president Colleen Hartland has called for the state government to step in and take action to prevent such fires.

“This is one of the ongoing problems for the EPA and the state government,” she said.

“It’s hard to know exactly why these fires keep happening. But the management by the government and the EPA is not good.”

Ms Hartland said the fires continued to happen in lower socioeconomic communities, and that if there are going to continue to be ongoing issues, they need to be addressed.

“I’d like to know when they [the EPA and state government officials] last visited these sites,” she said.

“Without transparent information being provided to the community, it continues to be

challenging for residents. There’s not a lot of faith in them.”

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said the council shares the community’s concerns.

“Brimbank council shares the community’s concern about industrial and tip fires in Melbourne’s west, including the recent fire at Cleanaway’s Brooklyn Resource Recovery Centre, as well as the ongoing Kealba Landfill hot spots and the need for better air quality monitoring at the landfill site,” Cr Rasic said.

“Brimbank residents deserve to be able to enjoy clean air in their homes, back yards and when out and about in the community.”

headspace program set to expand

Tales to inspire from young author Budding young author Laura Flanagan can’t wait for book week at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College.

The year 11 student has always been a keen reader and writer, but that was taken to the next level when she took out first place in the year 11 and 12 category of the Victorian Association for the Teaching of English (VATE) Stories That Change 2021 writing competition.

Laura’s winning piece was called Reflection.

“It was about a person trying to figure out their identity in life and figuring out what

they were meant to do,” she said.

“I thought the story would inspire young people and make them feel something. I was talking a lot about identity with my friends and talking about what we want to be when we are older.”

With confidence growing, Laura is continuing to write.

“I’ve written quite a few short stories since,” she said.

“I’m writing a novel at the moment, but it’s nowhere near finished.”

Laura will be one of the many students taking part in Caroline Chisholm Catholic College’s book week between August 23 and 27.

The college celebrations will include a number of guest speakers.

“I want to talk with the other authors about getting books out there and inspiring and learning with writing,” Laura said.

“It’s about bringing people together through writing.”

A dedicated program helping young people secure employment opportunities in Sunshine is set to expand.

Sunshine headspace is one of four Victorian locations for the Individual Placement and Support Program, which aims to help young people secure employment opportunities, while improving their mental health and financial security.

Federal Victorian Senator Jane Hume said the Sunshine headspace site would continue to run the successful program to address barriers preventing people from finding and keeping a job.

The Sunshine headspace is one of 24 existing locations being extended, in addition to 26 new sites across Australia delivering the program “The Morrison government will re-invest in this program to boost local mental health and employment services in Sunshine,” Ms Hume said.

“By integrating educational and workforce support with clinical mental health services, we are helping our young people secure employment opportunities.

“Managing mental health should not be a barrier to pursuing a fulfilling career. The program will continue to ensure young people have access to the tailored support they need to thrive in any workplace.”

The program expansion will allow 6000 Australians under the age of 25 experiencing mental illness to access a range of specialist vocational and employment support services.

The ‘Eagle’ returns to its Federation Trail perch The ‘Eagle’ is back where it belongs on the Federation Trail in Brooklyn.

The ‘Eagle’ which was designed by local sculptor Sean Diamond had been in place above the trail since 2016.

The sculpture, which is made out of recycled stainless steel, was stolen in the mid-2020.

After learning of the theft, Brimbank council recommissioned the same artist to create a replacement piece. The new eagle was recently installed.

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic it had been deeply upsetting to learn that the original ‘eagle’ sculpture had been stolen.

She said the council condemns such actions of theft and disregard to a work of art, created for the public to enjoy.

“Brimbank council is proud of the public

art that enhances our community and open spaces,” she said.

“Public art can be a powerful way to foster local pride and reflect our community’s diversity and unique heritage.

“Council is pleased to have recently installed a replacement piece, which sits perched high watching over the surrounding landscape.

“Council remains committed to promoting innovative arts opportunities in Brimbank, and celebrating the arts helps to create a connected, vibrant and creative community.”

COVID-19 heart study

By Alesha Capone The Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute (BHDI) in Hoppers Crossing is embarking on a $2.5 million study of the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on heart health.

The study, funded by the Medical Research Future Fund, is being led by Dr Erin Howden and Professor Tom Marwick.

Their aim is to understand whether COVID-19 damages the heart’s chambers and blood vessels, and whether it impacts upon a heart’s functional capacity (the ability to perform aerobic work).

It will also examine if best practice management, such as medication and exercise training, can help restore this function in COVID-19 survivors.

“There has been huge variation in the scientific literature to date on the cardiovascular impacts of COVID-19 in Europe, but we have no idea what the patterns look like in Australia,” Professor Marwick said.

The BHDI hopes to recruit 1000 people who have had COVID to take part in the study, including residents of Melbourne’s west.

Derrimut father Abhi Nair, who contracted COVID-19 last June, has signed up to participate in the study.

Abhi’s wife Dhara Rajyaguru, mother Lalitha Nair and father Viswanathan Nair also developed COVID in 2020.

Viswanathan, 74, spent 120 days in hospital with the illness.

Abhi himself, who is not sure where he became infected with the virus, was hospitalised twice and spent weeks feeling ill.

The family spent a month isolating, and are thankful that Abhi and Dhara’s nine-year-old daughter did not develop the virus

Abhi said that COVID-19 had been a “nightmare” for his family, especially when his father – who had no underlying health conditions – was hospitalised.

“As he was taken to the ambulance … I had a bad feeling and thought: ‘Am I ever going to see him again?’” Abhi said.

He said that before COVID-19, Viswanathan was an active man who enjoyed walking and gardening.

Abhi said his father never complained, but nowadays did not move much and became tired easily.

“COVID is real and it hits families hard,” Abhi said.

Abhi, 42, said he was fairly healthy before getting COVID, and could run five kilometres.

However, he now has breathing issues and

experiences difficulty when climbing a set of stairs.

Abhi said this was one of his main motivations for taking part in the BHDI study, plus a desire to help researchers understand the long-term effects of coronavirus.

“The study crew are very lovely and accommodating people,” he said.

“So I would encourage people to sign up if they have had COVID.” Study participants will be required to undergo cardiac scans and exercise testing.

If the BHDI finds evidence of heart damage in someone, they will be referred to a cardiologist and will receive exercise training or medication.

Free calls from payphones You won’t need to scramble for loose change to use a payphone, with Telstra making calls from payphones free.

Telstra announced last week that it’s network of more than 15,000 phones would be free right across the country, to make local or national calls to a standard fixed line or a call to an Australian mobile, In the past year, about 11 million phone calls were made from Telstra payphones, including more than 230,000 calls to critical services like triple-0 and Lifeline.

Telstra chief executive Andrew Penn said the decision meant everyone could now use payphones to make a free call when they needed to.

“They are an iconic and critical part of our community, and for many Australians, the availability of a payphone is a vital lifeline, especially for those vulnerable including the homeless, people who are isolated or someone escaping an unsafe situation,” he said.

“They play such a critical role in our community, particularly in times of need and for those in need.

“I have been moved seeing firsthand queues of people waiting in line, to use a payphone to tell their family and friends they’re safe … I can only imagine the relief their families feel knowing their loved one is safe.”

The Salvation Army’s Major Brendan Nottle welcomed the news saying this was a game changer for many people across the nation.

There have been at least eight factory, waste management or tip fires across the west and Hume since October, while the Kealba landfill has had underground fires burning continuously for more than a year.

Former LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley and former state MLC member Colleen Hartland say enough is enough.

“It’s a long-running issue,” Mr Rowley said.

“It doesn’t matter which party has been in power at the time, they haven’t done enough clean-up of the west.

“The urgency to clean it [industry] up has never been greater.”

Mr Rowley said during his time with LeadWest, from 2010-18, one of the biggest concerns raised by local councils was the need for a cleaner, greener and more liveable western metropolitan area.

“We were constantly talking about it with the other tiers of government, about the investment needed in the west to make it cleaner and greener.

“It just seems that it is taking a long time to get there.”

Mr Rowley said an Environment Protection Act, which changes how the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulates pollution, waste and contamination in Victoria, had been

delayed for 12 months.

“We’ve been waiting for so long to have confidence to be able to breath fresh air.

Confidence that our creeks aren’t going to be polluted.”

He suggests forming a steering committee which would include the EPA, WorkSafe, MFB and council representatives to have a co-ordinated approach to industry clean-up.

“I don’t think questions are being asked on Spring Street as often as they should.”

He also proposed government funding to help bring old industrial estates up to the 21st century and the introduction of better air quality monitoring systems.

Ms Hartland is a member of the Facebook group Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, which was

set up after the West Footscray warehouse fire which spewed toxic fumes across the western suburbs for days in August 2018.

She said the group, a non-political alliance of community groups, organisations and individuals, wants action.

“There’s been a spate of these fires,” she said.

“There’s been three in the last 10 days.

“The EPA and the state government don’t seem to be taking it seriously.”

Ms Hartland said the group wanted more regulation on industrial sites, clear information about when the EPA is called in and when and for how long air quality equipment is set up.

She has also called for the act to be introduced.

Twins Colby and Sebastian, and Rania and Dania, were among the excited pupils starting school at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children last week.

The school reopened for 2021 on Thursday and there was plenty of fun for the two sets of twins and their school friends.

Colby and Sebastian, 8, and Rania and Dania, 6, are two of three sets of twins at the school this year. The school has about 65 students.

A third set of twins will start on February 11 and will be part of the school’s early years program.

Principal Lee Bullock said it was possibly the first time the school had welcomed three sets of twins.

Kealba Hotel tops pokie spend

By Tara Murray More money was spent at poker machines at the Kealba Hotel than at any other venue in 2020-21, according to new Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation data.

The data, which excludes Crown Casino, showed that $14.55 million was spent on poker machines at the hotel in 2020-21, up from $13.87 million the previous 12 months.

It was one of 13 venues across the state, to record an expenditure of more than $10 million

in the last financial year.

The Deer Park Hotel was number seven on the list, with $11.24 million spent on machines in the venue.

Overall, Brimbank was again ranked the top municipality for expenditure on electronic gaming machines, with $92 million spent in the last financial year.

The latest figures come as the state government has announced an overhaul of the regulation of gambling in Victoria by establishing a new casino and gambling regulator.

The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) will have oversight of all gambling and gaming activities in Victoria and monitor gambling harm minimisation measures.

The current regulator, Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR), will continue its work while the new regulator is established.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform’s chief advocate, Tim Costello, said the new body had been desperately needed for many years.

Brimbank council, which has been vocal about the need for change to the gambling system, is part of the alliance.

“As [Consumer Affair, Gaming and Liquor Regulation] Minister [Melissa] Horne herself noted in her media conference announcing this new regulator, the amalgamation of gambling and liquor under one umbrella has been a failed experiment,” Reverend Costello said.

“Strict, thorough oversight is the only way to ensure anything is done to reduce gambling harm.”

Longing for connection in Australia CS Gallery’s newest exhibition is offering visitors an artistic insight into the experience of first-generation Australian women and their connection to the Australian bush.

Award-winning textile artist Sofie Dieu has been working closely with 50 migrant women living in suburban Melbourne to embroider symbols of water, flora, fauna, immigration, and womanhood.

Created in partnership with the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women Coalition, the ‘Longing for Home, Water Ritual’ exhibition features more than 60 of the resultant embroideries as part of the centrepiece of the

installation – a three-metre diametre dress.

Dieu, who teaches design theory at Monash University, has degrees in textile design and sculpture, and visual art and contemporary practice.

She has collaborated with leading mental health and refugee advocacy organisations, receiving numerous residencies and awards for her art.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik is encouraging people to visit the exhibition at CS Gallery in Caroline Springs and reflect upon their own connections to Australia’s unique landscape and the experiences of

those who have come from afar.

“It’s wonderful to not only showcase another acclaimed artist at CS Gallery, but to celebrate the artistry of so many women and their diverse experiences,” she said.

“This is a truly beautiful and unique exhibition and I hope all our residents will take the opportunity to visit the gallery and explore this show.”

Creative storytellers young and old are invited to take their talents to a wider audience in this year’s City of Melton Short Story Competition.

Well-known authors Michael Panckridge, Ellie Marney, and Lee Kofman will cast their eye over all entries in the competition, looking for stories that capture the imagination.

Submissions go into in the running to share in more than $3000 worth of prizes across three age categories – junior, teenager and adult.

Short stories can be submitted in print, illustration, video, verse, voice or a combination of forms.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the competition serves as a great way to celebrate the community’s talented and emerging writers, illustrators and videographers.

“This is a great opportunity for our creative community to showcase their talents and have their work viewed by popular authors,” Cr Majdlik said.

Campaign to comfort cancer patients Two charities have come together to bring comfort to people being treated for cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of the Give Australia a Hug campaign.

Cure Cancer Australia and The Big Hug Box are hoping to deliver 500 Hug Boxes to cancer patients across nations, as lockdowns mean people in hospital can only have a limited number of friends and family visit them.

Cure Cancer Australia funds young medical and science professionals working across all areas of cancer research, and has raised $75.7 million to support 534 research grants across more than five decades.

The Big Hug Box, founded by cancer survivor Lisa Greissl, provides gift boxes to patients suffering the illness.

All profits from sales of the boxes are donated to Cure Cancer.

For the Give Australia a Hug initiative, supporters can choose to donate a Hug Box to a patient in their local area or let the charities decide where to allocate a box.

“After my own cancer diagnosis in 2015, there was a huge wave of emotions - anxiety, frustration, sadness and anger,” Ms Greissl said.

“A lot of my friends and family didn’t know

what to do or how to help.

“The Big Hug Box came about because I wanted to create something that loved ones could gift to someone going through treatment when there are simply no words.”

Ms Greissl said that the oncologist who prescribed a treatment that saved her life has received three grants from Cure Cancer Australia.

“By purchasing a Big Hug Box, you’ll not only be supporting a cancer patient, you’ll be contributing to the research that might one day put an end to this disease for good,” she said.

Poor COVID-19 health outcomes

By Tara Murray and Alesha Capone The COVID-19 pandemic has caused “widespread deterioration” of people’s health across six municipalities in the north and west of Melbourne, according to a new study.

Data collected from 300 SiSU Health stations – which provide users with a free, self-service health check positioned in pharmacies around the nation – compares users’ pre-pandemic health levels (January 1, 2017 to March 31, 2020) to post-pandemic levels (April 1, 2020 to June 9, 2021) has been collated and released this month.

Altogether, the SiSu stations in Brimbank,

Melton, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Hume and Whittlesea recorded 17,889 pre-COVID users and 5723 post-COVID users.

There were 2916 people from Brimbank who participated in the study pre-COVID and 1106 users post-COVID. In Brimbank, the health of residents had deteriorated in six categories during the pandemic.

High blood pressure rose from 11.9 per cent pre-pandemic to 16.6 per cent post-pandemic in Brimbank, the second lowest of the six municipalities.

The number of smokers in Brimbank rose from 16.7 per cent pre-COVID to 19.2 per cent

post-COVID. In Melton, smoking rose from 14.4 per cent to 19.6 per cent.

The risk of developing type 2 diabetes within the next five years, based on the Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool developed by the Department of Health, increased from 25.2 per cent to 28 per cent in Brimbank.

The number of overweight or obese people in Brimbank slightly rose from 57.2 per cent pre-pandemic to 57.8 per cent post-pandemic.

SiSU Health founder and managing director Noel Duncan said that by painting a picture of population health and trends, real-time health data allowed governments

and organisations to invest in information campaigns and research that could make a difference to community health outcomes.

“The COVID pandemic has certainly impacted the health of the citizens in Melbourne’s north and western suburbs, like much of Australia,” Dr Duncan said.

“Whilst there are differences in risk baselines across these LGAs [local government areas] – the data indicates widespread deterioration in health risk rates.

“This will require concerted focus and effort to address and reverse over coming years particularly since these LGAs are home to 1.2 million people.”

Search for Parkinson’s support Melton’s Michelle Mendes and Mandy Baker want people living with Parkinson’s disease to know they’re not alone.

Both diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in their 40s, they found that there was very little support for younger people diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease in the western and northern suburbs of Melbourne.

They are now working to develop a peer support group for people living in Melbourne’s north-west who are similarly impacted by the progressive nervous system disorder, which affects the life of more than 27,000 Victorians.

Symptoms often come on gradually, starting with something like a barely perceptible tremor in a hand.

Other effects can include a slowing of physical movement or feelings of muscle stiffness.

Ms Mendes said Melbourne’s long lockdown has created a situation where people living with Parkinson’s disease may be feeling isolated and without adequate peer support.

With assistance from Parkinson’s Victoria, she has teamed with Ms Baker on a quest to establish a peer support group for people living around Melton, Sunbury, Bacchus Marsh or surrounding areas.

“This can then allow people to feel less isolated and to provide access to information about various health services,” Ms Mendes said.

“We can meet as a group and do events and outings with the group, hopefully providing people with Parkinson’s disease the opportunity to connect with each other.”

Ms Mendes said it is important to reach out to people in the outer regions, especially during current times.

They are also on the lookout for sponsorship from local businesses to support their endeavours to launch the group.

Melton residents are being urged to have their say on how the council will deliver services, maintain assets and build new infrastructure over the next decade.

Feedback is being sought on two key strategies for balancing community needs with available resources – the Council’s Draft Asset Plan 2021-2031 and Draft Financial Plan 2021-2031.

The asset plan is a suite of documents that outline how the council will deliver services and address infrastructure needs including developing and maintaining transport assets, buildings, stormwater assets, and open space infrastructure. The financial plan outlines the resources that will be required for the council to deliver the services and infrastructure that the community needs, while ensuring long-term financial sustainability.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik encouraged people to share their feedback with the council on these key documents.

“Together, these plans show how council will deliver the key services, buildings, roads, and parks that our growing community needs the most,” Cr Majdlik said.

“They will guide council in achieving goals and aspirations for the City of Melton that provide the most benefit to the community and in the most financially responsible way.”

Cr Majdlik said she would encourage everyone in the community to view these documents and have their say on how the council can ensure the best level of service and infrastructure for residents.

“It’s also an opportunity to provide feedback on the financial strategies you’d like to see adopted,” she said.

Mr Studd said they have worked closely with the chefs at Shadowfax to plan the meals and wine for the event.

“Cheese is the catalyst to bring out the flavour in the menu,” he said.

Barro and EPA battle headed for court The Barro Group is taking the Environment Protection Authority to court over a show cause notice issued in regards to the Kealba landfill hotspot fires.

The EPA issued a show cause clean up notice to Barro in March calling for the three of the hotspots at the landfill to be extinguished by May and a fourth one by the end of July.

The EPA served a notice on Barro at the end of June, asking it to show cause why its licence to operate at the site should not be suspended after the first deadline wasn’t met.

Last week, the EPA sent out an email to community members saying Barro had commenced legal action in the Victorian

Supreme Court regarding the clean up notice.

At last week’s online community meeting about the fires, Barro’s Steve Murphy confirmed that the group had started legal action.

He said a directions hearing was set down for August 18.

“The decision was taken to put a matter before the Supreme Court, which relates effectively to the remediation completion dates as proposed by the EPA in their latest clean up notice, which was the end of May and the end of July,” he said.

“Those dates were very different to the dates that had been proposed by Barro, when we sought an amendment to the clean up notice,

which was rejected by the EPA. “That is the matter up for discussion before the Supreme Court.”

Mr Murphy said from an operational aspect, nothing would change for Barro as it continues to try and put out the hot spots.

At the meeting, the group and residents decided to make the meetings fortnightly.

The EPA, which had already indicated that it wouldn’t be involved at the meetings as often, has said it will work with the community to design future engagement forums that allow access to appropriate expertise and information.

Kindergarten enrolments on the rise

By Alesha Capone Football star Majak Daw hopes that opening up about his battle with anxiety and depression in his autobiography helps others struggling with mental health.

Daw’s self-titled book, which he has penned in partnership with former sports journalist Heath O’Loughlin, was released this week.

The autobiography details Daw’s childhood in Egypt with his family, after they fled civil war in Sudan.

The family was granted refugee status and arrived in Australia when Daw was 11 years old.

Living in Wyndham Vale, Daw began his junior football with the Wyndham Vale Falcons and attended MacKillop College in Werribee.

He became the first Sudanese-Australian to be drafted to an AFL club when he was signed to North Melbourne in 2009.

Daw went on to play more than 50 games for the Kangaroos, making his AFL debut in 2013.

In the autobiography, Daw writes about the darker side of fame his sporting success brought about – the racism he has faced, his alcohol abuse and his suicide attempt in December, 2018.

In the autobiography, Daw writes that he realised that he did not actually want to die.

Daw underwent months of rehabilitation to return to the AFL as a player with Melbourne Football Club after fracturing his pelvis and hips, and fracturing his back.

Daw said writing the book was “cathartic” but it was also hard to write some parts.

“I was terrified about sitting down and opening up about certain chapters of my life for this book,” he said.

But Daw said that in doing so, he wanted to show other people with mental health issues that is worth fighting for their futures.

“I hope those who are struggling will read this and realise there’s always light out of the darkness,” he said.

Enrollment numbers for four-year-old kindergarten in Brimbank grew in 2020 bucking a trend across the state.

Nearly 100 more pupils attended four-year-old kindergarten in the municipality compared to the previous 12 months, according to Department of Education data.

A Department of Education spokesperson said it was positive to see that kindergarten attendance numbers had increased in Brimbank last year “Enrollment numbers in Brimbank have been increasing over the last few years with 2538 children enrolled in 2020,” the spokesperson said.

“This is despite the fact that kindergarten enrollment numbers across Victoria in 2020 were impacted

by COVID-19 due to a number of factors.”

There were 2449 students enrolled in four-year-old kindergarten in Brimbank in 2019 and 2518 in 2018.

The state government announced the Free Kinder project late last year, making a number of four-year-old and three-year-old kindergarten services free in 2021.

At the time, the state government said the project would save families $2000 per child.

Earlier this year, Brimbank council announced that three-year-olds would be able to access five funded hours of kindergarten each week.

At the time, mayor Ranka Rasic said that only one in three children in Brimbank participated in three-year-old kindergarten.

Youth work leads to award nomination Sunshine West’s Rhiannon Mustapic wanted to give back to a program that had done so much for her.

Ms Mustapic came through the Youth Insearch Program when she was younger and decided she wanted to become a leader in the program to help others.

She has been recognised for that work, named as a finalist in the The Southside Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Community Hero Award.

The award acknowledges everyday people doing extraordinary things within their local communities.

Ms Mustapic said she was honoured to be named a finalist.

“I was really surprised to be named one,” she said. “I was nominated last year, but wasn’t named as a finalist.

“I feel very honoured to do what I do with the youth. There are a lot of volunteers putting in a lot of time and effort.”

The Youth Insearch Program is young people helping young people and runs workshops and support groups across three states.

Ms Mustapic said the program changed her life.

“This definitely holds close to home as I know a lot of people who have been through the program and I want to be able to connect to other young people and give back to them.”

She said it had been difficult the 12 months with the group having to take much of the program online.

Ms Mustapic said she would love to run some of the workshops in the coming years, while long term would love the opportunity to be able to work for the organisation.

New book gives victims a voice

By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona’s Meshel Laurie has gone behind the harrowing scenes to speak with those directly touched by some of Melbourne’s and the world’s worst crimes.

Her new book, CSI told you lies, tells the stories of victims’ families, forensic pathologists who conduct autopsies, homicide detectives and defence barristers.

High-profile cases in the book include David Hookes who died from one punch, serial killer Peter Dupas, Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 shot down over Ukraine, and Eurydice Dixon and Aya Marsaawe who were raped and murdered.

Laurie said in the Hookes’ case, the investigator in charge, Charlie Bezzina, had wanted to bring a charge of manslaughter.

Hookes had vehemently wanted to be an organ donor.

“So, Charlie had to negotiate between David Hookes’ widow and the hospital and the Coroner’s Court,” Laurie said.

“It was this extraordinary situation where the forensic pathologist came to the hospital and basically conducted a lot of the autopsy at the same time as they removed the organs

Laurie’s unexpected connection to Dupas, convicted of murdering Nicole Patterson, Margaret Maher and Mersina Halvagis, is revealed in the book.

“I was working in brothels in the late ’90s as a receptionist,“ Laurie said.

“I had a beautiful boss called Miss Vick who

put on staff meetings for us.

“She used to invite guest speakers; she might invite a bank manager to talk about getting a loan and buying a house and then the next month she might invite a legal representative to talk about custody issues and family court issues and things like that that she thought would be helpful for the girls.

“One month she invited this young woman who was a psychotherapist to come along and talk about self esteem issues and getting counselling if ever things got on top of you.

“This lady’s name was Nicky and Nicky gave us all cards at the end but she was scratching out the phone number on the card and saying, ‘I’ll give you another phone number because I don’t work there anymore, I’m setting up my own practice at home’.

“Within about a week and a half, one of the girls said, oh, I’ve been trying to call Nicky and she’s not answering, she’s not ringing me back.

“It turned out that Nicky had been murdered

by Peter Dupas and in fact he was the first client to make an appointment to come and see her at home, at the new practice.“ Laurie spoke with Nicole Patterson’s sister, Kylie Nicholas, for that chapter of the book.

Another chapter was written with Anthony Maslin (Maz) and wife Marite Norris (Rin), who lost three children in MH17.

“They had so much to say about not just surviving after something like that but actually living after it, and about making the decision to have another child because as they said, ‘we were still parents but we had no children’.”

Wrapping their arms around families in need Big Group Hug in Bundoora is making a call-out for donations after the COVID-19 pandemic left many families in need.

Big Group Hug is a charity founded in the northern suburbs in 2014 that distributes donations of new and pre-loved baby goods, books, toys and nursery equipment to families in need.

Founder Angela Wood said the COVID-19 pandemic has put more people in need than before.

“People are reaching out for help for the first time, almost in shock that they are having to ask,” Ms Wood said. “The need to ask for help has risen and the risk of those on the margins falling further behind is real and being witnessed on a daily, hourly basis.”

Spokesperson Kate Hawthorne said that both physical items and monetary donations are important considering demand.

“There has been a baby boom during COVID-19 times, and we have more families in need than before,” Ms Hawthorne said.

“We’d love to be able to assist as many families as we can but without either physical items or monetary donations, we are limited.”

The organisation is currently seeking donations of baby baths, sterilisers (microwave and electric), vaporisers, baby monitors, porta cots, bottle warmers, prams, car seats, bouncers, bassinets, play mats, high chairs and children’s clothing.

Bashing through one last time More than 30 years after joining Dick Smith on an outback driving adventure for the first ever Variety Bash, Brookfield’s Terry Adair has decided it’s time to get back on the dusty road for one more dash at the Bash. He tells Benjamin Millar life under lockdown has been an important reminder to make the most of life.

Terry Adair is ready to roll.

The 76-year-old Brookfield resident is buckling up for one more spin across the country in Australia’s favourite charity motoring event.

As the only entrant this year to have also taken part in the first ever Variety Bash from Bourke to Bourketown in 1985, he will be an elder statesman of this year’s drive to raise much needed funds to support Variety – the Children’s Charity.

Mr Adair will be joined in the event by a couple of friends as they hit the road in Car 45, a 1992 Subaru Liberty dubbed ‘Adventure before Dementia’.

The Variety Bash was started by Aussie icon Dick Smith with the idea of “a drive in the outback with a few mates”.

Well known for its sea of classic cars and colourful characters, this year’s event is expected to raise $2 million dollars for kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have additional needs.

October’s event will mark Mr Adair’s fourth run in the bash, but the first in more than 30 years.

“I’ve always been into off-road endurance type events, in 1979 I did the Repco Around Australia Trail,” he told Star Weekly.

“That was a 14-day ride around the country, it was a pretty tough event.

“In 1985 I read about Dick Smith organising a fun event of the same sort of ilk, I contacted Dick and said ‘can I come along with you?’

“We took the 1963 Vauxhall Velox down to Sydney, drove from Sydney to Bourke, then we went through Charleville in Queensland, then onto Birdsville and from Birdsville up to Mt Isa then through to Bourketown in the gulf.”

Mr Adair enjoyed the event so much he took part again for the next two years, travelling firstly from Bourke to the Barossa one year then from Bourke to the Barrier Reef the next.

A stint spent living in the US and growing work commitments put an end to personal involvement in the bashes, but he’s hoping to add a silver lining to recent events that have taken a heavy toll on his business.

Buses, with COVID we haven’t had a job since last March,” he said.

“We’ve been in lockdown and I’m not doing much so I thought I would like to do one more.”

Setting out from Melbourne on October 19, a convoy of more than 120 cars will drive over 3500 kilometres through western Victoria, South Australia and southwest Queensland before arriving at Yeppoon on the Queensland coast on October 27, crossing to Great Keppel Island for a final night dinner the next night.

There is one particular destination halfway through the event that convinced Mr Adair he had to join this year’s event.

“This year it’s going back to Birdsville and I thought wow, I would love to go back to Birdsville.”

While keen to see the sights of outback Australia once again, it’s not just the landscape and tiny towns dotted along the way that have brought Mr Adair back to the bash.

“It’s very much a social thing, sharing this trip through these isolated areas and having a social event every night and just having good fun good times,” he said.

“It’s just getting out and having some relaxing time in the bush and enjoying yourself.

“Visiting kids in remote areas is also fun, when I did it in ‘85 very few people had seen or heard anything like it, it piqued a lot of interest

when we turned up in a town like Charleville.”

The other motivating factor is the chance to raise funds for Variety, a charity dear to Mr Adair’s heart.

“We have to raise $7000 and it’s a very tough time to get sponsors with what’s been happening with with COVID,” he said.

“It is a great cause, they are very professional and very little money goes towards administration, which in my book gives Variety big tick.”

And although it’s been a long time between trips, Mr Adair is far from certain this will be his last. “I would say watch this space.”

What’s your favourite thing about Brimbank?

I love the walking paths along Taylors Creek and of course, Brimbank Park, which is a jewel within this municipality, which I believe is underutilised and has such great potential to be used for events, festivals etc.

Where’s your favourite place to eat or go in Brimbank?

My husband and I walk our dogs in Brimbank Park on weekends and really enjoy stopping for a coffee and snack at Lumbar & Co. This is a wonderful little cafe located within Brimbank Park. It serves great coffee and yummy snacks and has live music on Sunday afternoons and is really worth a visit for those that have not been there yet.

You’re part of a group of residents who have formed a new residents and ratepayers association. What’s your reason for getting involved?

At this difficult time where many Brimbank residents are suffering from both mental and financial stress resulting from numerous COVID lockdowns and ongoing restrictions, it is more important than ever that our rates are kept low and that our money is well spent

on services and projects which help people.

Due to this, a number of concerned residents have formed the Brimbank Ratepayers and Residents Association, whose key objective is to advocate for lower rates, less wasteful spending and increased accountability. These are the things that matter to residents and we aim to ensure that all levels of government works to improve the lives of all Brimbank residents. Brimbank has air and noise pollution sites which are destroying lives, a lack of tree canopy creating urban heat islands and poor rail and road infrastructure.

You’ve taken on the role of president in that group. How does it feel to be the group’s first president and what do you want to achieve?

I am honoured to have been elected as the inaugural president of the Brimbank Ratepayers and Residents Association. I am very passionate about my community and I want better. I believe Brimbank residents deserve so much better from all levels of government and will be working hard to ensure that happens. I am also very pleased to be working with a wonderful committee made up of like-minded residents who are very knowledgeable and equally passionate about their community. Every day I see individuals advocating strongly on specific issues that concern them, sometimes successfully, but more often than not, their efforts fall on deaf ears, and I encourage these people to join the Brimbank Ratepayers and Residents Association because as a committed group of concerned citizens we can achieve so much more than is possible as individuals.

Honda City is worth revisiting

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Honda City is a four-door sedan that shares most of its underpinnings with the Honda Jazz.

However, it has a completely different body and sits on at longer wheelbase.

The sedan body made the City almost as large as the five-door Honda Civic, though slightly narrower inside. Having said that, it might be worth checking out a used Civic if you’re planning to use a Jazz as a family car.

As they tend to be bought by sensible people Citys are often looked after, driven gently and serviced strictly by the book. So used-car buys can be in very good condition for their indicated mileage. However, we still recommend a full professional inspection, just in case.

The City was late arriving in Australia when it came here February 2009 as it had been been sold in other countries for many years. Small sedans aren’t big sellers here as many prefer hatchbacks or small to medium SUVs. Interior space in the Honda City is impressive, with good head and legroom front and rear.

The low floor in the back seat means three adults can be carried, though two and a child makes a lot more sense.

There’s a rigid structure under the back window of sedans, rather than a very large hole in hatchbacks. So, there’s a quieter, more comfortable ride in the four-door than a five-door. Particularly on harsh roads.

The boot of this Honda sedan is impressive at 506 litres. In fact, it’s bigger than the big Aussie rear-drive family sedans of the time.

We were told that Honda engineers were briefed by Honda Australia chiefs on the desires of local motorists, and were told that Aussies like big boots. So, an esky was sent up to Japan, and the original rear end styling was

raised to make room for it!

A facelift in 2012 saw a bright chrome grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers and revised rear lights. Inside, there’s aluminium-look details on the panels, and new seat fabrics.

Thicker window glass and enhanced carpets improved cabin quietness.

May 2014 saw Honda launch the second generation of its City. Slightly larger than before, with a boot capacity up by 30 litres to a whopping 536-litre capacity Honda rates it as “four in the golf bag scale”.

It was fitted with a comprehensive kit of active and passive safety features as well as advanced communication technology.

Power comes from a high-revving engine displacing 1.5 litres. This was refined in the 2014 gen-two City to give more performance with slightly less fuel use. The biggest change under the bonnet was the fitment of a CVT automatic in place of the conventional unit on the early cars.

Handling is pleasant enough, with the City being happy to turn into corners and stable once in them. It’s happy to change direction

and only when you are pushing it hard does understeer come into the equation.

In late 2019 the gen five Honda City was introduced in Japan. However, it won’t be imported to Australia as buyers here are choosing the extra convenience of SUVs rather than sedans.

Honda is thoroughly established in Australia as a mainstream player so there are plenty of dealerships. Spare parts prices are about average for the class and we hear of few problems with availability.

Though a good home mechanic can do routine servicing and minor repairs it really is best to leave the work to a qualified mechanic.

Insurance costs are slightly lower than average with many companies, reflecting the conservative nature of buyers, and therefore low claim history.

What to look for A City that has been poorly repaired after a smash may attract rust. However, we’ve never seen rust in an undamaged City.

Make sure the engine starts promptly

and idles evenly pretty well straight away. If possible, arrange to start it when it’s cold after an overnight stop.

An engine that hesitates when revved suddenly may have problems.

Manual gearchanges should be light, positive and quiet. Problems will usually show up first on fast third-to-second changes. The clutch pedal should be smooth in its operation.

A conventional automatic transmission should be crisp in its changes and not hold onto any gear for too long.

A continuously variable automatic transmission feels different in its operation so have an expert check it out if you are not confident it’s working correctly.

Eclipse has plenty of personality

Safety The Eclipse Cross gets a five-star ANCAP rating thanks to a long list of active and passive features. Along with seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knees, a 360-degree camera and blind spot monitoring, the Eclipse Cross also gets rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist, active cruise control and a new forward collision warning system.

Mitsubishi’s Eclipse Cross sits somewhere between the Mitsubishis ASX and Outlander but has a personality all of its own. Its compact dimensions belie its spaciousness and, complemented by generous inclusions, this SUV is punching above its weight.

It is offered in Australia in three grades, the mid-level LS, the newly arrived entry-level ES and the top-spec Exceed. The versatile crossover is pushing hard to make its mark in a segment that surprisingly still has some wiggle room.

Driving

Styling The Eclipse Cross may very well be one of the more stylish examples in the Mitsubishi stable featuring trademarks of the brand with a modern twist. The reserved front end with the familiar grille combines well with a more sculpted rear for a car that is noticeable in a busy mid-size SUV segment.

The carries this attitude inside too, for an interior that is sensible and practical but an obvious step up from some of the more tired of Mitsubishi’s offerings. Drivers familiar with the brand will recognise the instrumentation with a favoured blue hue and some of the switchgear as well, but on the whole, the designers have opted for sleeker lines, a simple mix of materials and uncomplicated dials and buttons which help add to that sense of spaciousness usually amiss in an SUV of this size.

The front seats are supportive and able to accommodate wide shoulders, with the driver’s seat electrically adjustable as you search for that optimum spot. Passengers in the rear, too, can travel in comfort with room under the front seat for feet and head room not particularly disadvantaged by the sloping

roof or sunroof, unless you are a tall adult that is.

More legroom is available should you wish courtesy of the 60:40 sliding seat which borrows space from the boot when needed.

The boot itself is quite compact, which is not unexpected in a vehicle of this size, with a higher loading lip and a space saver spare under the floor.

The raised driving position in SUVs are often an advantage in terms of visibility, and while that is the case with the Eclipse Cross, visibility is hampered somewhat by the split

rear window. The lower entry point for the rear seats makes it slightly tricky for parents strapping young kids into their seats although the two IsoFix points are certainly handy.

Storage options are effective with two cupholders upfront, bottle holders in the doors and compartment for phones and keys. Standard kit in the top-of-the-range Exceed is generous and includes amongst others, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights and high beams, LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers and reversing camera.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a nifty little unit well suited for the challenges of urban driving. The chassis is set up for a compliant ride which offers comfort over bumps and common road irregularities.

Our test car featured Mitsubishi’s all-wheel-drive system which gives an added sense of surety under foot. In practical terms this equates not only to stability in wet conditions, for example, but also in confidence into corners and composure through roundabouts.

You will find the Eclipse Cross an enthusiastic participant who gets about its job with such little fuss that you will be happy to look the other way when execution doesn’t always match the intention.

It is an easy car to navigate around the city and shopping centres, is able enough once at speed on highways and sturdy on unsealed roads.

It may need a reassuring breath when carrying a load up a hill, can be slow to start when asked for a burst of speed and the steering is lighter than you expect, but its good manners and willing nature is hard to fault.

Our Eclipse Cross used around 8.5L/100km (official figures are 7.7L/100km) is runs happily on 91RON.

Olympic goal joy for Wales

By Tara Murray Just weeks out from the Tokyo Olympics, Western United’s Lachlan Wales wasn’t in the Olyroos squad.

Named as a train on player, he thought his chances of playing in the green and gold were over.

An increase in numbers to the squad, steamrolled him into the squad and resutled in a whirlwind couple of weeks which saw him starting in all three of the Olyroos’ Olympic matches.

Wales said it had been a crazy few months.

“I was selected as a train on player for the games,” he said.

“There were three players selected.

“There were so many great players in the age group and with squad sizes they picked players with more versatility.

“We were told there was a high possibility that the squad could be extended and I was hoping it would change. “On the flight over there, Graham Arnold said, ‘you’re in’.”

With a shot at getting some playing minutes, Wales pushed himself in the lead up training sessions and games.

While he was one of the last picked for the team, he entered the tournament as one of the Olyroos’ most experienced players.

Wales was given his chance in the warm up games against New Zealand and he took it.

“It was an unreal three weeks before the tournament started,” he said.

“I knew there was an incentive to train really hard as I could play. We had two training games against New Zealand. During

game one they decided we didn’t have enough speed up front and they put me in.

“They then started me in the second game.

It was such a small thing, but two weeks before I wasn’t playing and then I was in the starting line up.”

Wales would start all three of the Olyroos pool games, but it would be the first game that would stick in the mind of Aussie fans.

Wales scored in the opening match as the Aussies won 2-0 against Argentina.

“It was a great lead up play from the other boys,” he said. “I was lucky enough to score and everything fell into place for me and no one can take that away from me.”

The Olyroos failed to progress to the next stage. but Wales said they were proud of the their performances.

“We were in the group which was called the group of death,” he said. “We looked at it like the group of dreams.

“We won one game. We were 10 minutes away from a draw with Spain and that would have been enough to get us through.”

Wales is currently in hotel quarantine having returned from Japan. He will quickly be back to work for United, ahead of his second season with the club.

Wales said he was excited by the prospect of being coached by John Alosi, a former Socceroo star.

“As a kid growing up I remember the moment he sunk the penalty to get into the World Cup and then scored against Japan.

“It’s exciting for me. I’ll be picking him apart and trying to learn as much as I can and show it on the pitch this season.”

Falcons return to court for rusty win For the City West Falcons it was just about getting the win in the Victorian Netball League last Wednesday.

Their first game back after lockdown five, the Falcons and their opponents the Hawks, didn’t put on the prettiest display as they got rid of some rust.

The Falcons gained a lead early in the first quarter and were able to build on it throughout, winning 62-45.

Falcons coach Marg Lind said the focus for the night was to just get back out on the court.

Lind said the Hawks were a side that really fights hard and always pushed them.

“I wouldn’t say that it was the best netball,” she said.

“We didn’t have many court sessions back on the court after lockdown and we definitely weren’t at our prime.

“We got the win, but there were some obvious things that we needed to work through.”

Lind said one key for them was making

sure they had fresh legs throughout, meaning plenty of rotations.

She said they got to have a look at most players in their best two positions, which was good for the side going forward.

Lind said the umpires would have had a hard time giving out the votes, with no one really standing out.

“Maggie [Lind] played a good second quarter, Soli [Ropati] had a good third quarter and Jane [Cook] had a solid first quarter.

“Individuals at key moments keep the team going. I had no idea who the best was.”

The win keeps the Falcons undefeated and in a prime stop for a finals berth.

The Falcons have two games and a bye left before finals ,with the final game scrapped due to the fifth lockdown. The fate of one of those matches against Geelong Cougars remains uncertain, with Victoria heading into another lockdown.

It’s unknown whether that match will be

cancelled or postponed.

Speaking before the announcement of the lockdown, Lind said she was looking to the match, against the side they drew with in round one.

“We’ll look to try a few things and not put all our cards on the table.”

The Falcons division 1 and under-19 sides both had wins against the Hawks.

The division 1 team won a thriller 57-55 and the under-19 team won 44-43.

Lind said both sides were still in finals contention.

“The division 1 team is sitting in fourth after the win while the under-19s beat the second team.

“They are sitting around fourth or fifth, with any team in that competition can win it.

“As a club we’re pretty happy with where we are at.”

Lakers eye a finals spot

By Tara Murray Caroline Springs is hoping an upset win against Spotswood will be the stepping stone to a finals spot in the Western Region Football League women’s division 1 competition.

The Lakers sit outside the top four on percentage with two rounds, but produced their best performance of the season against the previously undefeated Spotswood last weekend.

Lakers coach Dean Ellis said after coming back from the second mid-season break due to lockdown five, they had aimed to keep it simple.

“During the week we made a ready conscious effort on the what we were focused on, as last time we played them they got away from us,” he said, “The word during the week was effort. They [Spotswood] had a few key players not playing which helped, but you can only play who is in front of you.

“It was a really good win, hopefully in the

lead up to finals.”

Ellis said this season had been a tricky one with the breaks due to lockdown. The first lockdown this year, they had more than a month off as they had a bye in the same period.

He is hoping to get a few weeks of consistent football that would help the playing group continue to improve.

“We have a lot of new players this year,” he said.

“The expectation was not really high.

We wanted to improve and the other teams around us have also improved.”

Ellis said the win against Spotswood showed them what they could do.

“We don’t want to just make up the numbers,” he said.

While finals are not the aim this year, Ellis said the focus was on the long-term.

Ellis said they had a number of young girls who had stepped up from the under-18s this season who had started to feel at home at this level.

He said there were players like ruck Molly Young, who had never played football before, that had really impressed him.

“It’s all started to come to the fore,” he said.

“It’s hard to pinpoint the standouts, but we’re not relying on the same old ones every week and we’re starting to spread the load.

“We’ve got more girls coming up next year to play senior football, we could possibly have two teams next year.”

Ellis said his first season coaching the women’s side has been everything he thought it would be.

He said the female program was one of the best things the club had ever done.

“It has been a while since I coached and I’m an old fashioned coach and it’s about getting the culture right.

“Everyone is here for the right reasons.

They’ve been brilliant this year and a bit of a stepping stone for the seasons ahead.”

The Lakers were set to play Werribee Centrals on Saturday, but that was put on hold with Victoria going into lockdown.

The AFL career of former Keilor junior Daniel Venables is over.

Venables, who was part of the West Coast Eagles’ 2018 premiership team, suffered brain trauma in a marking contest during a game in 2019.

Ongoing symptoms meant he hadn’t been able to play since.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Eagles said that an AFL medical panel unanimously recommended that Venables avoid contact sport, including AFL. Venables said he was sad that his career had come to an end, but he was relieved that the pressure was off.

“I’m not able to play again, so I can just concentrate on my health,” he said.

“It’s not until you sit back and reflect on the time that you understand how far you’ve come and the things you have had to go through.

“I feel like this has matured me as a person and it will help me in the future.”

“It has been two-and-a-half years, I am a very realistic person and I understood it was going to be tough to get clearance to play.”

Venables, 22, played his junior football with Keilor, PEGS and the Western Jets. He played 21 games after being taken by the Eagles at pick 13 in the 2016 AFL draft.

Eagles football general manager Craig Vozzo said Venables’ retirement was sad, but not a surprising outcome.

“He tried everything to recover and play again, but ultimately that will not be possible,” he said.

“Despite the ongoing battles, Daniel has remained upbeat and has been an important part of the squad and the club.

“He has been a great club man and very popular teammate and while it is tragic that we will not see a wonderfully talented player impact the game as he could have, this decision is made in Daniel’s best interests and with our full support.”

Vozzo said the club would continue to support Venables as he plans the next phase of his life.
