For the past six months the owner of King Of Kings Butchery in Wyndham Vale has donated meat products to the operators of Facebook group, We are all in this together Wyndham, which supplies food hampers to vulnerable residents. The group, which was set up by local residents Linda, Michelle and Vig, also allows members to ask for help with items such as food, clothing and blankets. “I really appreciated what they are doing and wanted to help,” Mr Grech said. “Someone did that for me when I was younger, and it’s just something I want to do.” Mr Grech also regularly donates meat to a Wyndham Vale community pantry to help families who need a hand. “You have got to be the change you want to see, that’s how I see the world,” he said. Every year he donates meat to the Uncle Bobs Club, a charity that assists hospitals, other institutions and children, for its annual Christmas event. Alesha Capone

Study of COVID survivors By Alesha Capone The Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute (BHDI) in Hoppers Crossing is embarking on a $2.5 million study of the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on heart health. The study, funded by the Medical Research Future Fund, is being led by Dr Erin Howden and Professor Tom Marwick. Their aim is to understand whether COVID-19 damages the heart’s chambers and blood vessels, and impacts a heart’s functional capacity. It will also examine if best practice management, such as medication and exercise

training, can help restore this function in COVID-19 survivors. “There has been huge variation in the scientific literature to date on the cardiovascular impacts of COVID-19 in Europe, but we have no idea what the patterns look like in Australia,” Professor Marwick said. The BHDI hopes to recruit 1000 people who have had COVID-19 to take part in the study. Derrimut father Abhi Nair, 42, who contracted COVID-19 last June, has signed up to participate. His wife Dhara Rajyaguru, mother Lalitha Nair and father Viswanathan Nair also developed coronavirus last year.

Viswanathan, 74, spent 120 days in hospital with the illness. Abhi, who is unsure where he contracted the virus, was hospitalised twice and spent weeks feeling ill. The family spent a month isolating. Abhi said that COVID-19 had been a “nightmare” for his family, especially when his father – who had no underlying health conditions – was hospitalised. “As he was taken to the ambulance … I had a bad feeling and thought: ‘Am I ever going to see him again?’” Abhi said. He said that before COVID-19, Viswanathan was an active man who enjoyed walking and gardening. Nowadays he did not move much

and became tired easily. “COVID is real and it hits families hard,” Abhi said. Abhi said he was fairly healthy before getting COVID, and could run five kilometres. He now has breathing issues and experiences difficulty when climbing a set of stairs. Hei said this was one of his main motivations for taking part in the BHDI study, plus a desire to help researchers understand the long-term effects of coronavirus. Satellite city vision for Werribee By Alesha Capone Developing a new satellite city in Werribee would create thousands of new jobs and boost employment options closer to home for residents, according to a new report. The West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA) last month released a report calling for a “satellite city” to be established. The alliance was established as an independent board in 2017, with the support of Victoria University, to influence economic development opportunities and create jobs

in Wyndham, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Moonee Valley. WoMEDA chair Professor Peter Dawkins, a former Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University, said building a satellite city would be a “visionary approach for the Werribee precinct”. Mr Dawkins said that pre-COVID, two-thirds of employed Wyndham residents – more than 60,000 people – commuted out of the municipality for work. “Based on current projections, this figure will rise to almost 110,000 commuters from Wyndham by 2036,” Professor Dawkins said. The report proposes that a Wyndham

satellite city be developed to create 50,000 new jobs and stop the need for people to leave the municipality for work. The city should include a major hospital and medical complex, a legal precinct, technical university campus, government and private research centres and an arts complex, the report states. The report warned the “failure to develop the East Werribee Precinct as a major employment and service centre” would have negative consequences for the community. According to the WoMEDA report, not developing East Werribee will result in

Werribee turning into an “undistinguished commercial centre” and Wyndham “filling up with houses”. LeadWest executive officer Sue La Greca last week welcomed the WoMEDA report. “Enhancing connectivity and liveability will be critical to creating a powerful heart for Werribee and Wyndham,” Ms La Greca said. “The creation of a new satellite city … will help ease the congestion challenges for Melbourne, boost employment options closer to where people live, generate new and exciting industries and learning opportunities, and deliver more health and community services.”

Say cheese at Shadowfax Cheese experts Ellie and Sam Studd will visit Shadowfax Winery in Werribee South to present a four-course menu featuring their favourite cheeses later this month. The event is being presented as part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival Winter Edition. The “Studd Siblings”, who are daughter and son of international cheese specialist Will Studd, will talk about the cheesemaking process and what drives the texture, aroma and flavour profile of cheese. Each course will be matched with Shadowfax wines, as winemaker Alister Timms discusses his favourite wine and cheese matches.

Mr Studd said he and his sister enjoyed telling stories and conveying traditions through cuisine, and also bringing people together. “I think cheese, wine and food are great vessels for learning and culture,” he said. Mr Studd said one example of this is Brillat-Savarin, a soft-ripened triple cream cow’s milk cheese created circa 1890. The cheese is named after Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, a French lawyer and politician who was also a food critic famous for coining the term: “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are”. Mr Studd said they have worked closely with Shadowfax chefs to plan the menu for the event.

Developer Country Land Australia is planning to establish a $120 million health and education precinct in Tarneit. The company, led by former Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan, has purchased a 13.7 acre parcel of land at 645 Derrimut Road, where it hopes to build the precinct. Country Land Australia paid $14 million for the site, approved for use as a mixed land zone, from Gold Bank Real Estate. In a statement, Country Land Australia said educational institutes, alongside public and private health bodies, were welcome to “express their interest in this great opportunity in Melbourne’s west”. Country Land Australia will offer two options to potential investors, and healthcare and education providers, who want to set up at the Tarneit site: to purchase land and build their own facilities, or for Country Land Australia to construct the buildings on their behalf. Country Land Australia is also planning to approach the state and federal government about “future opportunities” for TAFE and universities to be based at the Tarneit site. The statement said Country Land Australia “believes that this new development will increase and enhance development in Melbourne’s western suburbs and result in increased employment opportunities for local residents”. Olympic fever grips Olympian’s former school Students from Thomas Carr College in Tarneit have been keenly following the success of the Australian basketball team at the Tokyo Olympics. A former student of the school, Dante Exum is competing in his first Olympics with the Boomers. Exum, 26, was born in Melbourne to American parents. His father, Cecil, played college basketball at the University of North Carolina and was drafted in 1984 by the Denver Nuggets. As a teenager, Exum played in the Keilor Basketball Association. He has played basketball in the United States

since 2014 for teams including Utah Jazz, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Houston Rockets. In 2015, Exum tore his ACL while playing for the Boomers in an international friendly against Slovenia, meaning he could not represent Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In July 2021, after being invited to play for Australia in Tokyo, Exum posted to Facebook: “It’s always been my dream to play in an Olympic Games. “I told my agent straight away … I didn’t care what anyone had to say if they had any advice or anything. This is what I’m doing.” The Boomers have so far won all of their games, scoring 84 to 67 against Nigeria, 86 to

Wyndham council has announced the name for a future community centre in Congo Drive, Tarneit. After a public feedback process, about three-quarters of the 208 votes submitted by residents selected Dianella Community Centre as the facility’s name. The council last week voted to register the name with Geographic Names Victoria.

Majak Daw, in his own words By Alesha Capone Football star Majak Daw hopes that opening up about his battle with anxiety and depression in his autobiography helps others struggling with mental health. Daw’s self-titled book, which he has penned in partnership with former sports journalist Heath O’Loughlin, was released this week. The autobiography details Daw’s childhood in Egypt with his family, after they fled civil war in Sudan.

The family was granted refugee status and arrived in Australia when Daw was 11 years old. Daw began his junior football with the Wyndham Vale Falcons and attended MacKillop College in Werribee. He became the first Sudanese-Australian to be drafted to an AFL club when he was signed to North Melbourne in 2009. Daw went on to play more than 50 games for the Kangaroos, making his AFL debut in 2013.

In the autobiography, Daw writes about the darker side of fame his sporting success brought about – the racism he has faced, his alcohol abuse and his suicide attempts. In the autobiography, Daw writes that he realised that he did not actually want to die. Daw underwent months of rehabilitation to return to the AFL as a player with Melbourne Football Club after breaking his pelvis and hips, and fracturing his back. Daw said writing the book was “cathartic” but it was also hard to write some parts. “I was terrified about sitting down and opening up about certain chapters of my life,” he said. But Daw said that in doing so, he wanted to show other people with mental health issues that it is worth fighting for their futures. “I hope those who are struggling will read this and realise there’s always light out of the darkness,” he said. Town centre plan raises concern By Alesha Capone Residents of a Truganina estate say they are opposed to having apartments and townhouses built next to a shopping hub in their town centre. Wyndham council has approved a plan from Empire Properties to build a $27 million town centre at 50 Mainview Boulevard in the Allura estate. The plan includes three mixed-use buildings which will be used for retail, dining, medical

and recreational purposes. Other features of the plan include 69 apartments in two buildings of up to four storeys, along with townhouses and home office dwellings; a 1600 square metre supermarket; and shops such as a pharmacy, gym and restaurants. Allura resident Pranav Sinha said he and many other residents felt “a little bit appalled” at the plans. Mr Sinha said he was “frustrated” with Wyndham council for approving the

“Once it goes ahead, it will be very chaotic,” he said. “If they have … apartments and townhouses, it will have a lot of traffic.” More than 20 residents have commented on the proposal for the town centre, at the PlanningAlerts.org.au website, with a majority reflecting Mr Sinha’s concerns about increased traffic and plans for apartments and townhouses at the centre. Wyndham council and Empire Properties were contacted for comment.

Litter project wraps up Melbourne Water’s community-led Litter Action Project has wrapped up after nearly four years. The project involved residents from Wyndham Vale conducting regular clean-ups and rubbish audits at litter hotspots and waterways in their local area, under the group name of Love Our Streets. Melbourne Water has estimated the economic value of the thousands of volunteer hours clocked up during the project across the state equates to almost $237,500. The water authority’s education and capacity building team leader, Yvonne Cabuang said everyone who participated in the project has made a positive difference to the environment. “In the past three and a half years, Litter Action groups have removed and recorded almost 40,000 pieces of litter, with single use soft plastic and polystyrene the most widely collected items,” Ms Cabuang said. “This is an amazing achievement.”

She said that population growth and urbanisation means more litter is reaching waterways. “That rubbish threatens surrounding habitat and the wildlife that live there – affecting water quality, stifling plant life and presenting as a potential choking hazard to platypus, fish and birds,” Ms Cabuang said. She said most people do not realise that more than 90 per cent of litter that ends up in Port Phillip Bay came from rubbish dropped on suburban streets, which gets washed into stormwater drains when it rains. Study tracks declining health By Alesha Capone The COVID-19 pandemic has caused “widespread deterioration” of people’s health in the north and west of Melbourne, according to a new study. Data collected from 300 SiSU Health stations – which provide users with a free, self-service health check positioned in pharmacies around the nation – compares users’ pre-pandemic health levels (January 1, 2017 to March 31, 2020) to post-pandemic levels (April 1, 2020 to June 9, 2021) has been collated and released

this month. Altogether, the SiSu stations in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton, Hume and Whittlesea recorded 17,889 pre-COVID users and 5723 post-COVID users. The results showed: • In Wyndham, the number of overweight or obese users rose from 65.1 per cent pre-pandemic to 70 per cent post-pandemic. • In Hobsons Bay, high blood pressure rose from 12 per cent pre-pandemic to 20.2 per cent post-pandemic. The figure rose to 17.4 per cent in both Wyndham and Melton, compared to

below 14 per cent pre-pandemic. • The number of smokers in Hume rose from 17.3 per cent pre-COVID to 23.8 per cent pst COVID. In Melton, smoking rose from 14.4 per cent to 19.6 per cent. • The risk of developing type 2 diabetes within the next five years, based on the Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool developed by the Department of Health, increased from 28.2 per cent to 31.9 per cent in Wyndham, 25.2 per cent to 28 per cent in Brimbank and 23.4 per cent to 25.9 per cent in Hobsons Bay.

SiSU Health founder and managing director Noel Duncan said that by painting a picture of population health and trends, real-time health data allowed governments and organisations to invest in information campaigns and research that could make a difference to community health outcomes. “The COVID pandemic has certainly impacted the health of the citizens in Melbourne’s north and western suburbs, like much of Australia,” Dr Duncan said. “This will require concerted focus and effort to address and reverse over coming years.”

A new exhibition titled TREATY will open at the Wyndham Art Gallery this week. TREATY will feature the work of six First Nations artists for whom sovereignty is fundamental to their creative work and lives. The exhibition has been guest curated by Wemba-Wemba Gunditjmarra artist, curator and academic Dr Paola Balla. Dr Balla is also a PhD candidate who lectures with the Moondani Balluk Indigenous Academic Centre at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus. Zoo staff, volunteers save swan By Alesha Capone A wild black swan which swallowed discarded rubbish in Sanctuary Lakes has been released back into the wild after rescue volunteers and staff at Werribee Open Range saved its life. Point Cook Wildlife Care volunteers were called to the lake after members of the public spotted a swan with what looked like fishing line in its beak. Volunteers could see rubbish wrapped around the swan’s tongue and larynx. They suspected the swan had also swallowed some of the rubbish. Veterinarians at Werribee zoo operated and successfully removed the rubbish.

After a swift recovery the swan was released back into Sanctuary Lakes earlier this month. Zoo staff have appealed for visitors to Wyndham’s waterways and open spaces to take rubbish and fishing lines home with them, or dispose of them properly. Werribee Open Range Zoo senior veterinarian, Natalie Rourke, said litter – along with discarded fishing lines and hooks – could seriously injure and kill animals. “Unfortunately, any rubbish that finds its way into the marine environment and its waterways – including discarded fishing line – poses a potentially deadly risk to marine wildlife and waterbirds, as we’ve seen with this black swan,” Dr Rourke said.

Fishing line entanglements result in the deaths of about 1400 seals every year in Australia. Zoos Victoria has a series of more than 300 specially-designed ‘Seal the Loop’ bins located at waterways and beaches across the state, for anglers and recreational fishers to dispose of unwanted fishing lines and hooks. Dr Rourke said it was also important for members of the public to contact authorities if they saw an injured animal or bird. “Anyone who sees a marine animal in distress can call Melbourne Zoo’s Marine Response Unit for assistance on 1300 245 678,” she said. Pokies losses top $61 million

Pokier machines in Wyndham earned more than $61.62 million in the 2020-21 financial year. The figures, from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR), were released last week. During the 2019-20 financial year, more than $75.75 million was lost to poker machines in Wyndham. The VCGLR data did not include earnings from April to October 2020, when poker machine venues were shut due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The municipality which lost the most to electronic gambling machines was Brimbank, where the machines made more than $92.07 million in the 12 months to June 2021. The Alliance for Gambling Reform has called for a reduction in poker machine venue operating hours, after the pandemic lockdown demonstrated how people spend fewer hours gambling when venues are closed. The state government has given $350,000 to the Centre for Multicultural Youth to help Wyndham youths find a pathway out of crime. Werribee MP Tim Pallas, Member for Altona Jill Hennessy and Member for Tarneit Sarah Connolly last week jointly announced that the centre, which is based in Carlton, would receive funding to extend the Change It Up program for 12 months. Change It Up delivers intensive case management support to young people in Wyndham who have been identified as engaging in high-impact violent crime. The project aims to reduce offending and recidivism among youths aged 10 to 24. Change It Up engages young people in coaching, mentoring, employment and education opportunities to address the underlying causes of their offending and steer them away from the justice system. The funding comes from the state government’s Youth Crime Prevention Grants program, which received $4.4 million in the 2021-22 Victorian budget. Map to get active A new interactive map is making it easier for Wyndham residents to get active. The Active Wyndham Map is an easy-to-use online directory for Wyndham sports and exercise providers, encompassing everything from football, cricket and athletics clubs to yoga classes, personal training, martial arts and everything in between. Wyndham’s active city portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said residents can go to the Active Wyndham Map and search for activities available in their local area. “The search function allows you to filter the results by age, gender, suburb and venue, making it easy to find what you’re looking for,” Cr Maynard said. “We know that regularly participating in a sport or activity is great for

your mental and physical health, however more than half of all Wyndham adults fail to meet physical activity guidelines and one in five … don’t participate in any physical activity. “Everyone can play sport or take part in physical activity, no matter your age, size, or ability. Just give it a go.” Cr Maynard said the Active Wyndham Map was another way council was doing its bit to encourage Wyndham residents to get active by providing a one-stop shop for health and wellness activities in Wyndham. Tributes for ‘spiritual’ man By Alesha Capone World War II veteran Pu Bordy Weeku, who died last week, is being remembered as an inspirational and spiritual man. Bordy, as he was known, died in his sleep on Tuesday, July 27 at his Wyndham Vale home. He was 101 years old. In 1937, at the age of 17, Bordy – a member of the Karen people of Myanmar – joined the British Army in Burma, as it was then known. He was too young to train with guns, so the army taught him to play the trumpet and he became a bugler. Bordy’s son Eh Htoo Saw said one of his father’s strongest memories of WWII was the three months he and other soldiers spent marching 3000 kilometres from Burma to Karachi in British India – now Pakistan. Bordy, who became a Lance Corporal, met his wife Poday while she was serving as a nanny. The pair had five children. During the 1980s, Eh Htoo Saw and Bordy became refugees. They were granted refuge in Australia around 14 years ago. Eh Htoo Saw said his father attended a Baptist church every week, where he helped out

with tasks such as cleaning, until he reached his late eighties. “He liked to go to church every Sunday and was not happy if he did not go,” he said. In 2009, Bordy met Victoria Police officer Richard Dove at a Karen New Year celebration. Mr Dove, who is now settlement services co-ordinator at the Wyndham Community & Education Centre, invited Bordy to attend the Werribee RSL Sub-branch’s Anzac Day parade. After this, Bordy attended the Anzac Day march every year, an event that he greatly enjoyed. Mr Dove said that every time he saw Bordy, the senior citizen would salute and talk about his time as a WWII soldier. Mr Dove described Bordy as “a deeply spiritual man”. “He not only lived a long life, but inspired everyone he met with his presence and beautiful way of being,” Mr Dove said. “Wyndham, and all of Australia, have benefited from Bordy taking refuge in Australia, escaping the decades-long conflict in Myanmar” Bordy’s funeral and burial were held yesterday.

MY WYNDHAM Williams Landing resident Mandeep Kaur completed a bachelor of information technology in India before migrating to Australia three years ago. As COVID-19 hit and job opportunities in the IT field dried up, the 24-year-old decided to become a bricklayer. She chats with Alesha Capone. Why did you decide to take up bricklaying? I was inspired by my friend’s husband who is a bricklayer. He encouraged me to pursue a trade so I enrolled in Melbourne Polytechnic’s certificate III in bricklaying and blocklaying mid-2020. What was it like when you started studying? When I started bricklaying, the kinds of things I would hear is that I’m ‘not strong enough to be in the trade’. I was often asked questions that doubted my abilities. It’s been challenging as a woman pursuing a male-dominated trade. I was one of the only women in my course. What would you say to other women and girls who want to study a trade? You have to be strong to face such a male-dominated environment, but trades for women is a great path. I would definitely encourage women to pursue trades. There’s been a shift of thinking when it comes to gender roles. What are you doing at the moment? I’m doing brickwork at the moment … My boss is a very good teacher and is teaching me a lot on the job site. Do you want to have your own business one day? Maybe, maybe not – there are lots of different things I’m interested in. (Supplied)

New plan to help Tarneit thrive Connolly’s Corner by Tarneit MP, Sarah Connolly Welcome back folks to Connolly’s Corner. Civic culture and community life aren’t exactly what first comes to mind when talking about the state government and the suburbs of Melbourne’s outer west. Quite often instead, the hype and benefits surrounding civic culture and creative industries could lead you to believe they’re the sole province of ‘trendy’ inner-city suburbs. I won’t shy away from it when I say we deserve to have, and can have, a thriving creative community right here in Wyndham. Because community life and local culture start when and where the community comes together. Which is why I’m really happy to share with you that this is exactly the kind of thinking around community life and civic pride in the ‘Outer Burbs’ that we’re injecting back into Tarneit through Suburban Revitalisation. The Tarneit Revitalisation Project was set up last year by our government to create local jobs and fund smaller, but no less important, projects and events to bring new life into the area in partnership with Wyndham City Council. As your local member, I sit on the Tarneit Revitalisation Board, along with other engaged locals such as school principals, and individuals from community groups and business, to look at ways we can spend this money to create positive opportunities in our community. And I have to say – your board members, alongside council have some incredible ideas! We’ve even already seen some of these projects come to life such as the beautiful new mural painted across the front entrance to Tarneit Gardens Shopping Centre. More recently we also announced a greenspace

upgrade of $400,000 for Camelot Park, Tarneit Waterways, Moondara Park and Meeree Reserve. With this funding, we’ll soon see these interconnected parklands reinvigorated into the lovely functional open spaces families can enjoy. And when coupled with the announcement that we’re committed

to planting 500,000 trees across Melbourne’s west, these parks could rival any in the leafy eastern suburbs. Over the coming months, I’ll continue to make a series of announcements about what we’ve got planned for the Tarneit Suburban Revitalisation as the board decides, because

murals and park upgrades aren’t the only things we’re delivering. There is a light at the end of this COVID tunnel we’ve been in for the past year and a half and when we get there, I want to see Tarneit thrive with fantastic outdoor spaces for families to enjoy, and wonderful events that bring our community closer together.

A journey to zero waste As councils adopt waste management plans that aim to tackle the amount of waste their municipality produces, there is a growing push for people to think about how they could live more sustainably. A few people in the know spoke with Michaela Meade. Go For Zero Australian-owned Go For Zero is a zero waste and toxin free store, with products available for shipping Australia-wide. Their mission is to “move to a circular economy where we write trash out of existence”. Products from the online store are sustainably made and sourced, either from the company, or the businesses it includes on its website, and are sustainably packaged, and delivered to customers in a carbon-neutral way using plastic-free shipping materials. A Go For Zero spokesperson said people should strive to adopt a zero waste lifestyle “because recycling is not the solution”. “[Recycling] is a short-term option, but we create so much waste it can’t be recycled and ends up in landfill,” the spokesperson said. “Only 8 per cent of plastic that goes in your recycle bin truly gets recycled.” The company provides a variety of products that help people maintain their zero waste habits, including starter packs for cleaning, food storage and sanitary products, for the uninitiated. The spokesperson said the community can become more involved in the zero waste movement “by starting with small changes”. “Bring your own coffee cup, learn about recycling,” they said. “Because once we know better, we will do better.” Details: goforzero. com.au Positive Feeds Newport-based Positive Feeds is a curated gifting service that showcases products from local producers. It was born in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when events industry company Footprint Group Events found itself languishing. Bringing it home Sustainability consultant and zero waste enthusiast Kirsty Bishop-Fox said moving to a zero waste lifestyle was easy for her. Ms Bishop-Fox said Facebook groups such as Zero Waste Westies and Zero Waste Freebies, as well as mobile apps including Next Door, can help people to begin to live sustainably. “There is a lot of community comradeship when you align with people who also are trying to avoid waste,” she said. Ms Bishop-Fox said people should think about what happens to their waste once it’s taken away from their houses. “There is a significant amount of waste that could have been recycled, composted or repurposed,” Ms Bishop-Fox said. “Having done waste audits, I am always surprised to see how much usable stuff gets thrown out in some peoples’ bins. “If we can avoid creating waste, by thinking about our habits and making conscious purchase decisions, it will be more sustainable for our community, our children and grandchildren.” The Zero Waste International Alliance defines zero waste as the “conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health”.

Health survey needs your input Make a difference to your community in just 10 minutes! Take our 2021 Community Health Needs Survey online. Unlike most surveys that clog your inbox (usually with the subject line ‘How did we do?’) this is a questionnaire that really matters. It asks questions about your health. About your experience of health care. And about anything that might be preventing you from getting the care you need, when and where you need it. In the time it takes to drink a cup of tea or a really good coffee you’ll have helped improve local health services – and as a bonus you’ll go into the draw to win one of three $100 gift vouchers. Your de-identified responses will be used to help North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) plan and fund health services that our region needs. Combined with other health data, hearing directly from our community helps not-for-profits like Primary Health Networks and governments to decide what the priorities and gaps are to help us design better services. Recently, health data showed us a clear need for support to help children develop in parts of the Hume Local Government Area. In response, we funded the ASPIRE project that worked with parents and enabled children to see speech pathologists and occupational therapists and attend supported, culturally appropriate playgroups. In 2019–20, we listened to more than 700 people to help create a ‘Blueprint for better mental health’. The community is helping to

further refine the plan this year, so services are better connected and ‘see the person’, not just their illness. Our other data-driven programs include psychosocial supports (linking people with social groups and practical help, bolstering mental health), and ‘dying well’ initiatives, which draw on community feedback to improve end-of-life care. Data, feedback and community connections are also vital to helping us reach groups who

find it hard to access services – such as people experiencing homelessness, older people, or those from culturally diverse backgrounds. In one recent example, we funded community members to design and deliver a program that successfully encouraged people to get their cancer screening checked off. Honda City 2009 - 2019 By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Honda City is a four-door sedan that shares most of its underpinnings with the Honda Jazz. However, it has a completely different body and sits on at longer wheelbase. The sedan body made the City almost as large as the five-door Honda Civic, though slightly narrower inside. Having said that, it might be worth checking out a used Civic if you’re planning to use a Jazz as a family car. As they tend to be bought by sensible people Citys are often looked after, driven gently and serviced strictly by the book. So used-car buys can be in very good condition for their indicated mileage. However, we still recommend a full professional inspection, just in case. The City was late arriving in Australia when it came here February 2009 as it had been been sold in other countries for many years. Small sedans aren’t big sellers here as many prefer hatchbacks or small to medium SUVs. Interior space in the Honda City is impressive, with good head and legroom front and rear. The low floor in the back seat means three adults can be carried, though two and a child makes a lot more sense. There’s a rigid structure under the back window of sedans, rather than a very large hole in hatchbacks. So, there’s a quieter, more comfortable ride in the four-door than a five-door. Particularly on harsh roads. The boot of this Honda sedan is impressive at 506 litres. In fact, it’s bigger than the big Aussie rear-drive family sedans of the time. We were told that Honda engineers were briefed by Honda Australia chiefs on the desires of local motorists, and were told that Aussies like big boots. So, an esky was sent up

to Japan, and the original rear end styling was raised to make room for it! A facelift in 2012 saw a bright chrome grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers and revised rear lights. Inside, there’s aluminium-look details on the panels, and new seat fabrics. Thicker window glass and enhanced carpets improved cabin quietness. May 2014 saw Honda launch the second generation of its City. Slightly larger than before, with a boot capacity up by 30 litres to a whopping 536-litre capacity Honda rates it as “four in the golf bag scale”. It was fitted with a comprehensive kit of active and passive safety features as well as advanced communication technology. Power comes from a high-revving engine displacing 1.5 litres. This was refined in the 2014 gen-two City to give more performance with slightly less fuel use. The biggest change under the bonnet was the fitment of a CVT automatic in place of the conventional unit on the early cars. Handling is pleasant enough, with the City being happy to turn into corners and stable

What to look for

Make sure the engine starts promptly and idles evenly pretty well straight away. If possible, arrange to start it when it’s cold after an overnight stop. An engine that hesitates when revved suddenly may have problems. Manual gearchanges should be light, positive and quiet. Problems will usually show up first on fast third-to-second changes. The clutch pedal should be smooth in its operation. A conventional automatic transmission should be crisp in its changes and not hold onto any gear for too long. A continuously variable automatic transmission feels different in its operation so have an expert check it out if you are not confident it’s working correctly.

Young star promotes sport By Alesha Capone Teenage table tennis player Aanchal Sharma says she wants to encourage more girls, women and gender-diverse people to take up sport. The 16-year-old from Tarneit qualified to represent Victoria in table tennis, as part of the under-17s President State Team earlier this year. Sharma said she and her teammates were set to travel to a national table tennis competition in Brisbane last month, however the event was postponed due to COVID-19 border restrictions. Sharma, who has been playing table tennis for six years, said she faced discrimination in primary school, with some people telling her she would not be “good enough to play” simply due to her gender. “When I first started to play table tennis at my school, there were three girls including me out of 30 students,” she said. “But this made me try harder and show everyone what I’m capable of.” She said she started practicing more often. “With more training, I improved quickly and the results were promising,” she said. “You can’t judge someone on their first shot, if you lost once, get up and try again because you won’t get better unless you practice.” Sharma remains a dedicated player, training at the Loops Table Tennis club in Sunshine for three to four hours a day, five days a week, and for up to eight hours per day during the school holidays. “I also compete in several competitions every month held around the state,” she said. “I’ve played at my school and in competitions with other schools, winning many trophies, medals and awards.” Sharma said she believes that everyone

should be able to play the sport of their choice, regardless of their gender. She also plays basketball and volleyball, and has qualified to represent Suzanne Cory High School in regional cross country. “I want to end gender disparity, by encouraging and motivating young girls to play sports like table tennis, cricket, AFL, where more boys play than girls,” Sharma said. “If you are passionate about the sport or even have the slightest interest, don’t hesitate because there’s nothing better than giving it a go. “Just give it a go and believe in yourself because you never know what you are capable of until you have tried. “And you don’t have to be good at the start.” Sharma said she especially wants to get more women and gender-diverse people into table tennis. “Table tennis is more than just playing, it’s socially interacting with peers and learning their unique style, and equipping yourself with a broad suite of skills,” she said. “I absolutely love to meet like-minded people who share the same passion and similar ambitions for table tennis, who are determined to challenge themselves every time they step onto the court. “It is a sport for everyone, and age is not a barrier.” Sharma said aspired to be like her favourite table tennis player Melissa Tapper. “She made history in 2016 when she became the first Australian athlete to qualify for both the Summer Olympics and Summer Paralympics,” she said.

Werribee returns to winners’ list By Tara Murray It was a winning return to the field for Werribee in the Victorian Football League on Saturday. After not playing the past two weeks due to COVID-19 lockdown, Werribee headed to Preston City Oval to take on the Northern Bullants. After a less than ideal lead-up to the match, with skipper Michael Sodomaco a late withdrawal due to injury, Werribee found itself trailing early after the Bullants kicked with the wind in the first quarter. Werribee played catch-up for most of the game, before hitting the front in the final quarter. An eight goal to one final quarter would seal the 14.17 (101) - 10.11 (71) win. Werribee assistant coach Nick Daffy said they had to give credit to the Bullants and the pressure they put on the side. “They played pretty well and we have to give them some credit,“ he said. “We had a long way to come back eventually stuck at it and did quite well,” he said. “They went with the wind early which gave them a four to five goal start on us, so it was catch-up footy for most of the game and we were able to peg it back.” Daffy said the group was positive at quarter-time despite trailing by 31 points. He said they had been killed in the inside 50s, but knew they could peg back the result. He said they looked to change a few things structurally, which also helped. “Our side hadn’t clicked for a few weeks,” he said. “I think it was good that we were able to peg back a good start from them and then take the game and rip it apart with the last few goals and really the last quarter we were all over them.” Daffy said they were thrilled that they could put together some good football, having lost their previous two matches.
