Dishing up cheer The Hoppers Club is bringing a smile to the faces of many doing it tough, providing free meals to people in need. The not-for-profit club has been encouraging residents who have had shifts cut, or who are short on cash, to attend the venue’s reception and order a family meal. Hoppers Club chief executive Mike Lewis said Facebook posts about the offer have reached more than 20,000 people. Mr Lewis said that club staff prepared up to 20 meals each night, along with the meals they provide to agencies such as Feeding Families for distribution among vulnerable locals. Hoppers Club employees have also been delivering meals to homes, sometimes dressed in costumes, to spread cheer. Mr Lewis said COVID “has had a huge impact on the club’s bottom line” causing it to lose “many hundreds of thousands of dollars” and put other community projects on hold. He said he was proud of the club staff for their efforts in the pandemic, particularly executive chef Sid Haldikar and operations manager Amy Crawshaw. AMY AND VICKIE OF THE HOPPERS CLUB

Victoria lifts lockdown Victoria’s fifth lockdown ended at 11.59pm last night but new settings will remain in place for at least two weeks. Victoria’s COVID-19 commander Jeroen Weimar said there were 10 new COVID-19 cases recorded on Tuesday, bringing the total number of active cases to 188. All 10 had been isolating. From today, the five reasons to leave home and five kilometre travel limit have ended. Students return to the classroom. Restaurants and cafes can reopen for seated

service. Retail, beauty and personal care services, entertainment venues and community facilities can also reopen. Premier Daniel Andrews said that people who can work from home should continue doing so, with offices restricted to a capacity of up to 25 per cent of the workforce or 10 people, whichever is greater. Public gatherings are allowed with up to 10 people, however, home visits are still prohibited. “We regard the home as what it is – it is in many respects, from a transmission of this virus point of view, the highest risk environment,” Mr Andrews said.

The end of lockdown comes as authorities announced that COVID-19 fragments were detected in wastewater from Werribee, Tarneit and Truganina. The Department of Health said the wastewater detections might be from someone who previously had COVID-19 and is no longer infectious, but is continuing to shed the virus. But, the detection might also be due to an active, undiagnosed case, the department said. Anyone who lives in, works in or has visited Werribee, Tarneit and Truganina between July 21 and 23 has been urged to watch for the “slightest of COVID-19 symptoms” and get

tested as soon as possible if symptoms develop. There were 10 active cases of coronavirus in the 3030 postcode, which covers Point Cook, Werribee and Werribee South, as of Monday, health department data reveals. There was one case in the 3029 postcode which includes Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina. A Hoppers Crossing aged care and retirement home was placed on alert last Thursday after being made aware that a resident returning from hospital could possibly have COVID-19. The state’s COVID-19 commander Jeroen Weimar said the resident later tested negative to the virus.
