Nine year-old LEGO enthusiast Vihaan is one of the many youngsters looking forward to this year’s Wyndham Brickfest. The annual event will return to Pacific Werribee on September 18 and 19, to raise funds for the paediatric ward at Werribee Mercy Hospital. Competition categories will include primary school and under, secondary school and adult. Schools are being encouraged to enter the engineering competition. Vihaan, pictured, won a junior prize at the 2019 Wyndham Brickfest and last year when the competition moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has won several other LEGO competitions this year and displayed his LEGO creations at fundraising events. He also has a YouTube channel and Facebook page, showcasing his large-scale LEGO builds including models of the London Bridge and the Taj Mahal. “What I enjoy most about LEGO is smashing it up and rebuilding it,” he said. Youth mental health crisis By Alesha Capone Wyndham health professionals are concerned about a “mini-epidemic” of youth mental health problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It comes as 10 well-known Wyndham residents prepare to pull on their dancing shoes with the aim of raising $100,000 to help the Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) develop a school program to boost mental health and reduce suicide among students. Director and paediatrician at the Western Specialist Centre in Werribee and St Albans, Dr Raj Khillan, is among those taking part in the Werribee Mazda Dance Stars on the Floor.

Dr Khillan said that youth mental health “has not been in good shape since last year”, and had become worse in the past five to six months. He said many young people were developing anxiety or depression, or refusing to return to the classroom due to underlying issues such as bullying. Dr Khillan said parents have reported children showing signs of panic while being driven to school. Some youngsters with autism, who did not cope well with change, displayed aggression when returning to school after months of home study. He said it was important for parents to

seek help for children struggling with mental health sooner rather than later, but families were facing long waiting lists, sometimes of up to six months, to get psychological help or counselling for children. “It is very intense and frustrating for parents who want to get help for their children but can’t find anywhere,” he said. Werribee GP Dr Joe Garra said there was “delays, delays, delays” for young people needing mental health assistance. “Trying to get help for kids, even if you have private health insurance, is tough,” he said. “There is definitely a lot of kids wanting help and definitely a lack of services.”

MHFA vice-chairperson Jim Goodin said youth mental health issues were “severe in Wyndham”. “The anxiety and build-up that’s occurring now, we expect to see a build-up in the not-too-distant future of suicide – not just of youth, but everyone,” he said. Council on notice over landfill By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is working to rectify “legacy issues” at the Wests Road landfill, after being issued five pollution abatement notices (PANs) since October. The notices were issued by Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) in an effort to manage landfill gas and to ensure the site is compliant with an EPA guidance document on best practice at landfills. EPA western metropolitan manager Stephen Lansdell said gas levels at the landfill were

found to exceed the levels at which the authority requires action to be taken to prevent odour and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “The PANs require the site operator to install more bores and wells to manage and assess gas migration, to develop an action plan to reduce gas levels, and to repair the soil coverage on some cells,” he said. Mr Lansdell said the notices were initially served in October and November 2020 but some requirements were amended under an order from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal earlier this year.

Mr Lansdell said that EPA inspections have shown that progress is being made at the Werribee site, including the installation of wells along the eastern boundary of one cell to control landfill gas migration. The EPA has also issued a clean-up notice requiring the council to reduce the height of two of the landfill cells, to the height approved in its licence. Wyndham’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said the latest PAN was received by the council on May 11. Mr Thorpe said the matters raised primarily

related to historical practices undertaken at the Werribee landfill site during the “less stringent environmental regulations” of past decades. “These practices, such as the approved design and construction requirements of older landfill cells, have now resulted in legacy issues that council is rectifying,” Mr Thorpe said. “For example, council is now working with the EPA to focus on improving the performance of the landfill gas extraction system by completing the final capping of cells as quickly as possible.”

Wyndham’s littlest litter legend Young Quinn has been recognised as a Litter Legend by Wyndham council for his dedication to helping the environment. The award is presented to residents who strive to keep Wyndham clean. Quinn, who will celebrate his seventh birthday in September, met with Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich on Tuesday. Cr Hegedich thanked Quinn for his efforts to clean up the municipality, including as a volunteer with the Love Our Street 3030 and 3029 community litter collection groups. Quinn said he joined the groups about 18 months ago with his parents. “What I like the most about doing it, is that I like doing the hard work,” he said. Every time his family takes their dogs for a walk on the beach, Quinn brings a bag to collect rubbish. Quinn said he wanted to prevent litter from getting into the water, where it can be swallowed by marine creatures and birds or cause them injuries. “I want to save the world by picking up rubbish, because if you don’t the animals will get sick,” he said. Quinn said he enjoyed seeing small animals, such as frongs and birds, while cleaning up rubbish. He said the rubbish he often finds in Wyndham include cigarette butts, straws, takeaway food items, polystyrene and discarded fishing nets. Quinn said he felt happy to receive the council’s Litter Legend award and hopes to continue to pick up litter and have a career working to help the community and animals. Galvin Park milestone A $3.8 million redevelopment of the Galvin Park Soccer Pavilion in Werribee reached a key milestone last week. A new pavilion, which is being built as part of the Wyndham council project, has been completed, while the second new pavilion is on track for completion in the coming months. The two new pavilions will feature a community room, six new changerooms, a large kitchen and canteen, public toilets and facilities for officials. Wyndham’s active city portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the redevelopment was the fifth stage in a roll-out of the reserve’s master plan which has also included a $2 million tennis pavilion and $1.7 million oval. “This latest redevelopment will transform Galvin Park into a state-of-the-art sporting hub and will help boost participation in sport,” Cr Maynard said. The redevelopment of the Galvin Park Soccer Pavilion has been jointly funded by Wyndham council, which has invested $2.8 million, and the state government, which has contributed $1 million. Silverbeet harvested at Werribee Park will go towards an important cause. Grown in the park’s famous parterre gardens, the silverbeet has been planted and tended to by culturally-diverse community volunteers and young adults with a disability, from support services provider genU. Werribee Park area chief ranger James Brincat said the silverbeet will be harvested and sent to the Sikh Community Kitchen to be cooked and packed into free meals for community members in need. Last year, 3000 kilograms of silverbeet from Werribee Park’s gardens was used in about 1000 meals per week during the winter months. “It’s not a bad result for a community project run by the community for the community,” Mr

Mr Brincat said the initiative stemmed from the Working Beyond the Boundaries’ partnership between Parks Victoria and refugee settlement agency AMES Australia. The project was so successful that it has become an annual program at Werribee Park. AMES Australia chief executive Cath Scarth said the partnership showed how people could come together to help others in times of need. “This is a great outcome and shows what can be done with a bit of imagination and initiative,” she said.

Vaccine hub opens

By Alesha Capone A Werribee house constructed by a prominent local family, and home to a well-known artist for more than 45 years, is on the market. Husband and wife Platon and Kathy, a painter who works under the professional name of Kathleen Vafiadis, have lived at 6 Scotsburn Grove since 1975. The pair are selling up to downsize and move to the beach. Kathy said their four-bedroom home, constructed in the mid-century modern style, was originally built by the Beamish family. The surname is famous in Wyndham, with John Beamish establishing the first irrigation plant on the Werribee Plains in 1886. His brother, Francis Beamish, was a Werribee Shire councillor in the 1880s, and several Beamish family members served in World War I. Kathy said the house was designed and built by Lloyd and Sonia Beamish about1959-1960. The home still features hardwood floors, wide skirting boards, a bathroom and light switches installed by the couple. It also features a cedar door which originally came from a 40-bedroom Werribee house known as The Manor, built by Percy Chirnside during 1895-1896. The bathroom of Scotsburn Grove features colourful tiles, which Kathy has painted with pictures of Queen Elizabeth. She has also painted walls in the garden in the Mondrian style, with clean lines and bright colours. Michelle Chick, from Ray White Werribee said the house would be auctioned on July 31. It is priced between $600,000 to $660,000 “It’s a beautiful warm home, it’s quirky, in a brilliant location and feels wonderful,” Ms Chick said,

A new COVID-19 vaccination hub will open at the Wyndham council civic centre in Werribee from Thursday. The hub, to be operated by Western Health, is the first of its kind in the west. “We’re proud to be partnering with the state government to see our community vaccinated against COVID-19,” Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said. “As part of this partnership, we’ll see the functions area of the Wyndham city council civic centre transformed into a vaccination hub three days a week, from 8.30am to 4pm, to support the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine. “Residents who are eligible to be vaccinated no longer need to travel to the Sunshine Hospital, and can now book via the Victorian online COVID-19 vaccine booking system or the COVID-19 hotline to secure an appointment.” Cr Hegedich said AstraZeneca would be the only vaccine offered from the hub for the coming weeks, but Pfizer is expected to be offered once further supply is available. “At Wyndham, we’re committed to doing all we can to prevent further COVID-19 outbreaks,” she said. The vaccination hub will run from Thursday, and then weekly from Wednesday to Friday until at least the end of the year. Unemployment rate rises By Alesha Capone Wyndham recorded the third-highest number of unemployed residents across the state in March with 11,894 people out of work, according to the National Skills Commission. This equalled to an unemployment rate of 8.3 per cent for the municipality. In comparison, in March 2020, Wyndham had 8614 unemployed residents (5.9 per cent). In March this year, Hume recorded the most unemployed residents in Victoria, with 15,178 people out of work.

Casey, in the south-eastern suburbs, was second with 15,561 unemployed residents. Werribee had the highest number of unemployed residents in Wyndham as of March, with 2424 people out of work. Point Cook recorded 1940, Tarneit 1718, Wyndham Vale 1703, Truganina 1214 and Hoppers Crossing 1034. Werribee South had 760 unemployed residents and Laverton 544. A federal government report from last year found that the number of users registered with Jobactive – a government-funded network of organisations that delivers employment

services to those in receipt of Centrelink payments – rose from 5833 people in March, 2020, to 19,408 in September, 2020. Earlier this year, Wyndham council and local employment organisations launched a program to help job seekers. Opportunity Wyndham, which is supported by the state government, provides businesses with resources and access to recruitment services and local people seeking jobs. The program also offers training for job seekers. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the council was calling on local businesses to join

Opportunity Wyndham “to create local jobs for local people”. Wyndham’s welcoming city portfolio holder, Cr Jennie Barrera, said the program aimed to help with the economic recovery from COVID-19. “Access to local jobs and work placements is an important element of being connected to community … we know this program will have multiple benefits to not only employers but also the community,” she said. The Wyndham Olympics If you are keen to try out 14 different Olympic sports across the next six weeks, get ready for Wynopoly – the Tokyo Games edition. Wyndham council and WynActive have launched the initiative, together with local sports clubs and associations, to help residents get active and learn more about the Olympics and Paralympics. As part of Wynopoly, which will run from July 19 to August 15, the council has created an online board game for participants to download or collect from Eagle Stadium or AquaPulse. Individuals and teams who take part in Wynopoly can tick off each of the 14 sports on the board, as they complete the different activities on offer. The council will also host some come and try sessions, including cycling, weightlifting and swimming workshops at AquaPulse. A free Multi-Sport Fun Afternoon will be

held at Eagle Stadium on Sunday, July 25 from noon to 4pm, giving attendees the opportunity to try out at least six sports, such as table tennis, karate, volleyball, archery, athletics and basketball. Residents taking part in Wynopoly can register and log their activities in return for points, to receive an electronic bronze, silver or gold medal. Trio ready to rally By Alesha Capone Three friends braved snow, multiple mechanical problems and tough terrain while driving a Nissan Pulsar through the New South Wales backroads to raise funds for charity in 2019. Altona Meadows resident Duncan Benn, Andrew Meddings of Hillside and Jason Bonnici from Tarneit – aka Team Pulsation – travelled in a 1993 Pulsar, nicknamed Betsy, from Mudgee to Finley for the Kidney Kar Rally. The annual event raises funds for Kidney

Health Australia’s yearly Kidney Kids Camp and youth programs. And the trio is aiming to do it all again, with the aim of raising $3000 during this year’s rally from August 14 to 19. During their 2019 “epic adventure”, the men saw the Big Ram at Goulburn, dressed as cowboys for a performance night and carried out repairs to Betsy in the parking lots of motels. The mechanical skills of Mr Benn, who is business manager of Hoppers Crossing auto repair shop Hoppers Stoppers, came in handy.

“We are looking forward to the challenge and adventure of driving a beat-up little car through outback NSW with good mates, especially after the last 18 months Victoria has been through,” Mr Benn said. He said the trio had decided to take part in the rally because the wife of a friend, Oden Hickey, suffers from kidney disease. COVID-19 lockdowns have led to a sharp decline in cervical cancer screening test numbers, prompting calls for women to consider self-collection screenings. Not-for-profit health organisation VCS Foundation is urging eligible women in Melbourne’s west to consider using its Home-Based HPV Self-Collection (HBSC) kits to help ensure any signs of cervical cancer are picked up early. The initiative is designed to assist patients to screen safely at home following a telehealth appointment and receipt of a pathology request form from their healthcare practitioner. To be eligible for self-collection, the patient must be aged 30 years or older and overdue for a cervical screening test by two years or longer. VCS executive director Professor Marion Saville said VCS Pathology, which processes about half of all cervical screening tests in Victoria, has experienced a dramatic decrease in tests. “We are offering a process that’s embedded in primary care, it has to be requested after a telehealth consult with your GP who has to determine that you are eligible for self-collection,” she said. “We’ve done a number of clinical trials of self-collection through the mail and the vast majority of people found it straightforward to do.” Benjamin Millar

Heritage sites ‘at risk’: Study By Alesha Capone A study of Wyndham’s historic sites has found many are “at risk of demolition or inappropriate development” due to a lack of recorded details about their significance. The details were included in a Heritage Gap Study presented at a Wyndham council meeting last month. The council engaged heritage consultants Context GML to prepare the study, the first in a series of three aimed at identifying, documenting and protecting places of historic

significance across the municipality, in December, 2019. Councillor Susan McIntyre said that the council had previously prepared a study of heritage places in 1997, with a review conducted in 2004. She noted that the latest study focused on heritage sites of post-European settlement, with much of indigenous heritage managed under separate legislation. The study classified 92 existing heritage sites in Wyndham as “high priority” as they are “believed to be under threat (of neglect,

demolition, development plans for the area)”. The document states “many existing place citations lack details and Statements of Significance do not clearly identify the features or elements that are significant about the place”. The report recommended updating these details in the council’s heritage overlay and other records. The sites listed as high priority included the Werribee Guides Hall, Cobbledicks Ford and reserve, Werribee Racecourse, Werribee Primary School and Little River Uniting Church. Cr McIntyre said some post-war houses in

Werribee “are not currently represented well in the heritage overlay and are in danger of demolition”. A list of potential heritage places, including 173 individual sites in Wyndham which met criteria for further investigation, was also included in the study. However, Cr Heather Marcus said there were people within Wyndham “who are extremely unhappy with this heritage report”. She said some local historical sites which were suggested by community members for inclusion in the study had been left out.

Cricket for all abilities A program that offers cricket for people with special needs, including those with a disability and senior citizens, is coming to Hoppers Crossing. Walking Cricket, will be run at Hoppers Indoor Sportz, in partnership with National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider Harmony Home and Community Care and coaching academy Cricket with Khawaja. The initiative was the idea of Farooq Dar, whose four children – Taimur, 17, Taaha, 16, Aiela, 12, and Aahil, 10 – play at Sanctuary Lakes Cricket Club and Hoppers Indoor Sportz. Mr Dar, who is also a coach at Sanctuary Lakes, said he found out about Walking Cricket while volunteering with an organisation that works with people who have special needs. “The idea is to provide an opportunity to people with special needs to play … cricket, have fun, develop friendship and keep

themselves fit,” Mr Dar said. In Walking Cricket, players walk around to bowl, field and while taking runs. Matches are run by support workers and cricket coaches. Hoppers Indoor Sportz plans to offer the program on days and times which suit attendees. While Walking Cricket is covered under the NDIS, anyone can join up. “I would encourage anyone, irrespective of their abilities or skills, to come and try out the game,” Mr Dar said. Hoppers Indoor Sportz owner John Almond said he was hoping to extend the program to include other sports and activities. A strength and balance pilot program, run by a grassroots peer support group for people with Parkinson’s and Victoria University, has grown in leaps and bounds since last year. ParKanDo co-leader Pam West said that when the program was launched online during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was so popular that it became oversubscribed within a fortnight. Wyndham council has provided funding to incorporate the initiative into VU’s Master Movers Program. The classes, designed for people of all abilities, including those with a disability and health conditions, offer seated and standing exercises to improve aerobic capacity, balance, co-ordination and strength. The sessions can be attended in-person at VU’s Werribee Fitness Centre or online via

Hearing well equals freedom As COVID-19 lockdown restrictions ease and vaccinations are received, people are eager to get back into the swing of things. Centre expands research A $3 million donation to the U-Vet Werribee Equine Centre will allow the facility to expand its research capability with cutting-edge diagnostic imaging equipment and clinical care. Melbourne Veterinary School head, Professor Anna Meredith, welcomed the donation. “This generous gift from the Hoskings will allow the equine centre to expand its research and clinical services to performance and leisure horses and thereby serve a larger portion of the equine community in Victoria,” Professor Meredith said. Ms Hosking said that the U-Vet Werribee Equine Centre conducted important research. “It impacts the local community, the veterinary community, and the research and higher education sectors – as well as the horses we love and care for – so it was important to us to support this work and our community,” she said.

Research conducted at the U-Vet centre aims to build a catalogue of knowledge and clinical techniques to benefit the wellbeing of horses. Its next phase of research, funded by Racing Victoria, will explore new methods for assessing injury indicators in a horse’s stride, improving diagnostic imaging methods and develop software for assessing limb injury risk

in real time. Racing Victoria and the University of Melbourne announced last month that U-Vet would deliver year-round 24-hour emergency on-call service for serious limb injuries and fractures incurred by thoroughbreds in training and racing, extending its previous commitment from during key racing carnivals.

Volunteer map launched Volunteer West has launched its WestSeed Community Map, which will show 100 organisations that need volunteers across Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Wyndham, Melton and Moonee Valley. The map features more than 70 organisations aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and expressions of interest are being invited from others. Community members looking to volunteer close to home can use the map to find organisations within their area. How long have you lived in Werribee? I have lived in Werribee for nearly three years after moving here from Adelaide. I lived in Hoppers Crossing with my brother before moving to Werribee. What do you like most about the area? Absolutely love the area from its gorgeous main street, beautiful river area, close to the beach, diverse cultures, local pubs and eateries and my favourite place would have to be Chatterbox Cafe as it’s where I had my first date with my now-husband. I love this community, it’s just such a beautiful community. How did you get started in making bath and household products? I’ve been an avid crafter for most of my life. I love creating and love making things for other people. My original business was selling homewares and decor items online but that fell through when COVID-19 hit and because a lot of bigger retailers sell similar items at very cheap prices. My husband said: ‘Go where your heart is and where you passion is’, which is why I started Raspberry Roses. He’s my biggest fan and very supportive. What is an example of something you make? Wax melts, a safe, non-toxic way to have fragrance in your home. It releases the fragrance when warm and has a very low melt point. It’s

Everyone’s best friend brings joy Aged-care residents have been among those hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, cut off from loved ones and the rest of the outside world by strict lockdowns. But Benjamin Millar finds a new pet therapy program could provide just the boost to social, emotional, physical and physiological health they need.

hen the COVID-19 pandemic swept across Australia in 2020, everything changed for people living in aged care. With worries the coronavirus would wreak havoc on the health of vulnerable elderly living in the residences – fears that turned out to be well-founded – facilities were shut tight against all visitors and people living in care lost almost all personal contact with the outside world overnight. VMCH (Villa Maria Catholic Homes), a not for profit organisation providing services to more than 9000 people across Victoria, has hatched a “pawfect” plan to enrich the lives of older people in its 11 aged care residences. The ‘Pawfect Companions’ program aims to provide fortnightly dog therapy sessions for almost 1000 residents in homes including Providence Aged Care in Bacchus Marsh and St Bernadette’s in Sunshine North for the next two years.

VMCH chief executive Sonya Smart said dogs offer unconditional love and bring joy, laughter and a bit of fun to those around them. “Many of our residents had pet dogs before they moved into residential aged care, and often talk of their beloved companions,” she said. “As a not-for-profit organisation, we don’t receive funding for programs like this. But we do like to go the extra mile for the people we support and do what we can to further enrich their lives.” Ms Smart said the human-animal bond leads to a more enriched and fulfilled life for both humans and dogs. That viewpoint is scientifically backed, with therapy animals proven to have a positive impact on individual’s social, emotional, physical and physiological health, improving quality of life and wellbeing. Ms Smart said that all aged care residents

have really done it tough recently and a pet therapy program would be a small way to make a big difference in their lives. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, when visits from loved ones stopped, social outings became impossible and boredom set in, the focus became on creating entertainment within their home,” she said. “We’re always asking, what else can we do to help keep our residents’ days interesting and fun? How can we help individuals come together? Ease loneliness? Bring smiles to their faces?” VMCH resident Bernie said having pets visit the residences has always been a positive experience for everyone who has taken part. “When we have had a pet visit, even if people just sit back and watch, it’s amazing to see the joy in everyone’s faces,” he said. “It’s uplifting and makes everyone happy.” Resident Luciano, a former greyhound

trainer, said dogs coming into the residences helps bring to life happy memories. “Having Roxy [an employee’s dog] come in occasionally reminds me of when I used to have my dogs,” he said. “They just want to be patted and they don’t ask for much.” VMCH is seeking donations to help fund the fortnightly dog therapy sessions and purchase some interactive ‘companion dogs’. These canine lookalikes have built-in sensor technology that responds to petting and motion, much like real-life pets. “These dogs provide comfort, companionship, help to reduce stress and are always available to our residents in between ‘real-life’ dog visits,” Ms Smart said. “We hope members of the community will consider helping us to enhance the lives of our aged care residents.” Donations can be made via vmch.com.au/ pawfectcompanions or 1800 036 377.

Light touch to Subaru upgrade By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring From the get-go the Subaru XV, or as one wag said the ‘15’, was destined for a future outside the norm of the compact sports utility vehicle. And has stayed true to form. For a start, it was powered by Subaru’s trademark horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine mated with the marque’s ubiquitous all-wheel drive system. And styling was not your average small SUV set-up, with more of a nod to the wagon. A minor mid-life makeover for the second generation was cause to look back over the road travelled so far, while the addition of two petrol / electric hybrid versions will give us a glimpse into the XV future when we drive them. In the meantime, apart from a fresh look, the major change is the introduction of Subaru Intelligent Drive across the range. There’s also the addition of driver assist technology, with a Front View Monitor and Side View Monitor integrated into the front grille and passenger side door mirror. The hybrids also are fitted with e-Active Shift Control, which in SI-Drive on winding roads, engages automatically, based on information including accelerator use and the G sensor signal. It deactivates when it works out normal driving has resumed. The arrival of the hybrid pair takes the model choice to six, with the XV 2.0i AWD, at $29,690, plus on road costs, getting things under way. The car on test, the 2.0i Premium AWD ($34,590) sits amidships the range, while the two hybrids, in L and S spec, cost $35,490 and $40,790, respectively.

Interior Quality fit and finish are the first thing that strikes occupants on entry to the XV Premium cabin. Supportive seats are a combination of classy cloth and leather-look trim, with contrasting orange stitching. Manual adjustment is a mild let-down. Second row seating maintains the comfort score but boot volume at 310 litres, is nothing to write home about and does not compare with the more traditional compact SUV. 60:40 folding backs push up the space to 765 litres. In-cabin storage is nothing out of the ordinary, with twin cupholders, a central bin, a cubby forward of the gear lever, and a spot behind the cupholders for small items. There are a couple of USB points in the front console.

Infotainment The XV infotainment set-up is a screen-lovers’ delight, with an 8-inch in-dash touch display for Bluetooth, sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone stuff and DAB+ digital radio. A second screen, above, shows many of the XV’s systems including climate control. Here, tech heads can take a look at information such as roll and pitch angles as well as torque distribution. A third screen, in the instrument layout in front of the driver offers a digital speedo, fuel consumption, and a nudge to the driver if the car in front has moved off and he or she hasn’t.

While every MY21 XV has a new grille, front bumper, foglight surround, and alloy wheel designs, the look of the car has not changed. The XV is like no other SUV, with a design theme based on sharp edges and bold curves producing a solid profile and no soft styling. A strong horizontal bar across the radiator grille is a reminder of a horizontally opposed engine conrod and Subaru’s Boxer heritage, while a sharp windscreen angle, together with a large rear spoiler and bumper, aids aerodynamics. The 2.0i-Premium and lower grades run on 17-inch alloy wheels.

Over and above the standard active and passive (seven airbags) safety systems, the Premium includes Subaru’s Vision Assist package featuring blind spot monitor, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking and front view monitor.

SI-Drive offers the choice between frugal efficiency in I mode and sportier performance in S mode, for greater engine responsiveness, switching via steering wheel-mounted controls. Noise and vibration were kept to a minimum, and while the four-cylinder engine was refined in its power delivery, it did manage a roar only when pressed hard. The CVT works smoothly and without fuss across a wide range of ratios and offers the chance for the driver to become more involved with a seven-speed manual mode paddles. The offer is not worth taking. Leave the CVT to its own devices. Comfort and handling have come in for an upgrade with revised tuning allowing the front suspension to move more smoothly for a better ride, added agility and improved steering response.

SPORT Werribee Hockey celebrates 500-game milestones Two long-serving members of the Werribee Hockey Club have celebrated playing their 500th game. Catherine Munro, who joined the club in 1985, marked her 500th game on June 26. Goalie and field player Rachel Catania, who joined the club in 1990, played her 500th game on June 19. Munro said she began playing hockey when her older brother and a neighbourhood friend took up the sport. She was named the 1992 Junior Club Champion and moved up to the women seniors’ team the following year. She is the team’s captain for 2021. Munro said she played all her junior seasons at Werribee. She described Werribee Hockey Club as “my winter family”. “I just love Werribee Hockey Club, it’s such

a family-oriented club, they are so welcoming and all my best friends are part of the club,” she said. Munro said that her own children, who are now teenagers, spent a lot of time at the club while they were growing up. Munro said she would like to thank her children for always supporting her to play hockey. She said that her son and daughter were among the crowd when she ran onto the field for her 500th game. “I arrived and my brothers and sisters were there, it was a great surprise,” she said. “I was a bit blown away by that, it was one of the best parts of the day.” Other Werribee players formed a guard of honour as she ran onto the field for the match. Munro said she was selected for the state Masters hockey team in 2019, and again last

year. However, the 2020 competition was cancelled due to the pandemic. Munro said she has her fingers crossed that COVID would not stop her and the others on the Victorian team from competing this year, with a tournament scheduled in Newcastle in September. Alesha Capone

Heta steps into the ring By Alesha Capone Werribee resident Kim Heta will head to the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) Asia Pacific Championships in Queensland later this year. The 51-year-old is the owner and head coach at A-Team Group Fitness & Boxing in Werribee. Heta said he became interested in boxing as a youngster, when his father won a Golden Gloves Championship in New Zealand. Heta spent five years as a professional rugby league player with both the Rabbitohs and the Roosters. He decided to become a boxer after injuries put an end to his rugby career. As an amateur boxer, he won a Victorian state title before turning professional in 2005, winning the Asia-Pacific Heavyweight title in 2008.

Heta said that during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown of 2020, he had a lot of time to train and was urged to return to the boxing ring for the Masters division. He will head to Queensland for the WBF event on September 24. “These days I just enjoy the fact that boxing helps keep me on track mentally and physically, and I just love what the Masters do,” he said. “I like proving that we have still got it, everyone thinks you have got to retire but I like showing that we can still get out there and still do it.” Heta said he has been training with his strength and conditioning coach Terence Kuipers from PEAK Strength Werribee and boxing coach Igor Pocev in the lead-up to the championships. “We’re focusing my workload on getting my feet and hands working together, to get into a

nice rhythm,” he said. Heta said that remaining focused on his training while running a business throughout the pandemic has been tough, with the latest lockdown in May and June proving the hardest. “It’s very challenging at the moment, lockdown put a lot of pressure on the business,” Heta said. Heta and his wife Louise, a sports dietitian and fellow boxer, took up powerlifting last year. The pair have experienced success in the sport and Heta – who described himself as “a boxer first, then a powerlifter” – has broken some national powerlifting records. In the veterans group for males aged 50-59, Heta benched 135 kilograms and deadlifted 240 kilograms at a state championship in December. He will travel to Tasmania for a national powerlifting competition on September 3 and 4.

Women’s soccer in Melbourne’s west has received a boost, with Western United establishing a women’s development squad. The A-League club, which has strong ambitions to field a W-League side in the near future, announced the creation of the women’s development squad last week. United’s women’s football integration manager Amanda Stella said the club had been working on the squad for 12 months. The program comes on the back of the club’s partnership with Calder United, the only western suburbs team in the National Premier League women’s competition. Stella is also president of Calder United. “Launching a women’s development squad strengthens the club’s commitment to creating an elite pathway for girls from Victoria’s west and is an important step in our W-League project,” she said. “Western United’s dedication to female football has been demonstrated this year through the development of the partnership with Calder United, including regional and interstate trips to showcase the sport to a broad audience.” The squad, which is for players 17 and older, will involve about 20 to 24 players and will be formed with a strong contingent of Calder United players, along with other interested players. They will train in an elite program specifically designed to develop their talents. The 12-week program will start this month and will be based out of the Elite Football Centre in Maribyrnong. Calder United NPLW coach Mark Torcaso and Western United football staff will lead the program. Western United chief executive Chris Pehlivanis said this was exciting and that the club’s W-League expansion bid is in a healthy position. “This program continues to build our female football product, which is still very much in its infancy stage. Injuries mar Werribee’s start By Tara Murray It was a tough day at the office for Werribee on Saturday in the Victorian Football League, as its finals hopes slipped further away. Taking on one of the top sides, Casey Demons, Werribee needed some luck on its side, but was left behind the eight-ball with injuries leaving it two players down early in the first quarter. The Demons, led by an AFL-listed midfield, started the better of the two sides and continued to build as the game went on. Five unanswered goals in the third quarter put Casey well on top as it ran away with the win, 17.14 (116) - 7.15 (57). Werribee coach Michael Barlow said losing Nick Coughlan [head knock] and Nathan Cooper [hamstring] in the first quarter wasn’t ideal. Matt Hanson also spent time off, injured in the first quarter. “It was a tough day,” Barlow said. “Essentially we didn’t start well. We lost two of our main stayers down back after two weeks off essentially due to the bye. “We were digging deep and searching for answers and trying to hang in there. We had some opportunities as well, in the first quarter and that trend across the game. “We didn’t convert and we don’t help ourselves much when we have the ball in hand. We put ourselves in tough scoring positions and put ourselves under pressure just through some fundamental errors and fumbles.” Barlow said while he was disappointed, they did have some good moments, especially in the third quarter. He said the limited rotations and lack of fresh legs then hit and they were unable to run with the Demons late in the game. “[Aaron] vandenBerg, [Jake] Melksham, [Tom] Sparrow and Majok Daw are full-time athletes with high end ability and are genuine AFL mids. The longer the game went on the more that showed. We had patched where we couldn’t go with them particularly on the outside.

“Kye Declase exposed us a bit on the wing. You know what you’re going to get with them. They’re essentially a top two side. The match was a realistic measure-up where we are at, out played by a well drilled high class side.” Barlow said there were a number of players who could hold their heads high on a disappointing day. Connor Thar and Ryan Kemp kicked two goals each for Werribee.

Tom Gribble, Joe Maishman and Louis Pinnuck had 25 disposals a piece, with skipper Michael Sodomaco named the side’s best. Werribee now sits 10th on the ladder, two games outside the top eight, but has played two less games than some of the interstate teams. Barlow said they know the areas that they need to work on. “We’ll reflect on what we are doing well,”

he said. “What we can significantly improve is very fixable and that is my message to the team. It’s a lot of individual stuff and if we can improve five to 10 per cent and invest while we’re at training and look to translate to game day.” Werribee faces Port Melbourne this week. There will be some changes with both Coughlan and Cooper to miss through injury, opening the door for other players to get their opportunities.
