Calling Brimbank home

B

rimbank has always been home for the Keenan family.

Gloria and Ron moved to St Albans in 1957 and built a life there with their two children.

While the two children have grown up and are now great-grandparents themselves, much of the extended family still resides in the area.

Twice, including presently, has there been five generations of the family alive.

Janice Keenan was six when she moved with her parents to the area. She remembers it being a “really good place” to grow up.

“I had a light-hearted, easy childhood,” she recalls. “Being outside a lot, playing with the neighbours kids, an easy life with no pressures.

“I walked to school or biked to school in St Albans.

“I don’t remember any pressures, I used to go to dancing school, calisthenics and it was a casual lifestyle.”

Much has changed in the area, with Brimbank growing dramatically and a change of demographic, but Janice still loves the area.

So much so, she works for Brimbank council.

“I love the community, I love my job, and I love the different things in it,” she said.

“I’ve been in Albanvale, St Albans South and some of our family is in Keilor Downs. I worked at Sunshine, now I work at Brimbank, so we have been involved in the community.

“My brother is highly involved in the sports club, mum was scorer at the sports club for the cricket, her photos are all at the sports club.

“Now there’s the diversity, multicultural diversity. It used to be Italians and Maltese… there’s up in the 90 nationalities.”

Gloria and Ron lived in a tiny bungalow with no fences.

“It was in Conrad Street,” the great-great grandmother recalls.

“One side of the wall had mason iron, the other side just had rafters, but it was ours.

“It was only one bedroom and when Janice was getting older, we built a sunroom and she used to sleep there.

“We got the front put on all together, we paid someone to put on the front, the laundry and back room.

“There was no bathroom.”

The kids grew up playing in the street. There was no sewerage and the road outside their place would flood - Gloria often had to put the kids on a bike to get them to the other side of the road.

Bread and milk would be delivered to the house. Going to Sunshine or Footscray was a “big trip”.

The family had chooks and the entire garden was dedicated to growing vegies.

They managed to buy a fridge early in their time in St Albans to allow the storage of cold and frozen food.

A television soon followed.

“I went to work. I used to leave Janice and Garry with a neighbour two doors down and pay her to look after them,” Gloria said.

“Then she said ‘I don’t want to watch them any more’. The boss let me go an hour later to work so I can take the kids to school.

“I thought I’d put the money I was saving on her on a tv to keep the kids entertained.”

When Ron switched jobs and started to work in Footscray, it made sense for the family to stay in the area.

By that stage they were well and truly immersed in the community, including the St Albans sporting club.

Both Gloria and Janice recall the vibe of the area growing up, with neighbours more like family than friends.

“Before I was working, the neighbour and

I would go down the street and it was a pram brigade. You couldn’t take the pram into the shop, so they were all left outside, especially on the Friday.

“On the Tuesday I’d go into her place for a cuppa and she’d come in my place for the cuppa, during the week.

“If you didn’t have any onions, or a stamp to post a letter, they’d help you out.”

Janice added: “you made friends with your neighbours. Mum’s neighbour had her baby at home and mum had to run in and sort of help out.

“Back then we called them aunty and uncle and spent more time with them and their extended family.

“You didn’t go out of the area, only to visit family.”

Gloria, who is now 90, lives in Taylors Lakes

with her son after the house in St Albans became too big for one person.

She regularly catches the bus to Watergardens.

She said only once did the family consider moving from Brimbank and that was to Lakes Entrance once the kids had grown up.

Gloria said the changes in Brimbank, especially the past 20 years, had been amazing.

“My husband passed away 20 years ago and I’ll be in the car with Garry and say ‘if dad was here now he wouldn’t believe the development’, even before the last 20 years, there wasn’t much at all.

“We used to go mushroom-hunting in Delahey straight down Taylors Road.

“Dad used to go to Green Gully and shoot rabbits down by the river.”

“They bring new ideas, fresh thinking and find ways to give back to the community,” Sam says. “During covid, we all did everything possible to stay open, and that combined effort saw us through a challenging time.”

Don’t let hearing loss limit you These days, when Sherryl thinks back to what dancing was like before she wore hearing aids, she can afford herself a little giggle.

“It’s quite funny,” she says.

“I was probably feeling the beat a lot sooner than I was hearing it. I know that I made up words to songs and they weren’t the right words, but no one ever really told me about that.”

Sherryl had started to have “some irritating sounds coming through my ears and also pain at times and ringing in the ears” but put off having her hearing assessed. And there, she is not alone.

Findings from Hearing Australia’s ‘Share your Secret’ survey of Australians over the age of 50, show that despite hearing loss potentially hindering the ability of Australians to live life to the fullest, people are not taking action.

One in four (25 per cent) older Australians don’t recall ever having received a hearing test and more than one in five (22 per cent) haven’t taken a hearing test in over five years.

This may be a result of outdated views on hearing aid technology. Despite hearing aids now being modern, small and discreet, nearly all respondents (87 per cent) said that they would be too embarrassed to wear a hearing aid, as they are “ugly and unfashionable” (26 per cent).

For Sherryl though, the only thing she notices about her hearing aids is the positive difference they’ve made to her life.

“Once I’ve got my hearing aids on, I don’t even know they’re there,” she says.

“They’re a part of my routine of a morning and I don’t think anything of them other than they’re on me, they’re a part of me and I wouldn’t be able to carry on without them.”

The creepy and crawly are invading Watergardens shopping centre.

For four weeks, four large insects, each spanning four metres high, will be calling the shopping centre home as part of a Mini Beasts display.

The singing cicada, the neon cuckoo bee, Australian swallowtail butterfly and the Australian jumping spider react to movement and feature lights and bright colours across their bodies, wings and antennae.

Watergardens centre manager Joe Galea said the insects will intrigue people of all ages.

“While kids will love their giant nature and majestic colours, these creatures are really quite spectacular to see,” he said.

Shoppers are also encouraged to get involved in a QR trail hunt with instant prizes available.

The school holiday fun will continue at the centre, with wildlife ambassadors visiting with a range of mammals, birds and reptiles for a meet and greet between July 5 and 9.

Sunshine key to rail link

By Tara Murray Sunshine station will double in size and become a “key transport interchange” under plans for Melbourne’s airport rail link, according to Rail Projects Victoria (RPV).

RPV’s Melbourne Airport Rail project director Ben Ryan described the airport rail development as a game-changer for the area.

With the next round of engagement set to be released this week, Mr Ryan and Department of Transport head of transport services Nick Foa sat down with Star Weekly to talk about the project.

“What we define the transport super hub as, and what Sunshine becomes over time, is a key transport interchange between regional trains

and metropolitan trains and other modes of transport,” Mr Ryan said.

“It was always anticipated that it would be a transport super hub that enables those connections between different modes of transport and the regions.

“If you go back to when some of these big announcements were made back in 2018 … references to Southern Cross were all in the context of a region to metropolitan connection.

It becomes a transport super hub and then grows over time.”

Mr Ryan said Sunshine station would effectively double in size as part of the project, which will include a second concourse and better integration of the station with the remaining precinct.

Project plans released so far have angered Brimbank council, which envisaged the station precinct being transformed into a super hub that would attract businesses and tourists to Sunshine.

RPV said there will be urban renewal projects in the surrounding precinct and a community reference group will be established to increase the engagement between the Department of Transport and local stakeholders.

Mr Foa, who was formerly Brimbank council chief executive, said RPV wanted to open up important conversations.

“In terms of the transformative nature of the transport super hub that is coming to Sunshine, it’s been the long-held vision of the council and the community,” he said.

“The transport super hub needs to be located in a place that is really attractive.

“It’s really important to have that two-way conversation and we’re hoping it will include local residents, local businesses and the council.

“It’s about having a much broader conversation about things that are beyond the project remit, that might be pedestrian connections, urban design, activation of community spaces, which are really important.

“We would love to see the visions of local communities and business and council realised through a really good precinct project.”

All Brimbank Council buildings, sports grounds, community venues, leisure centres and street lights will be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity from 1 July 2021.

Brimbank is one of 46 Victorian councils that are part of VECO, the Victorian Energy Collaboration.

VECO is the largest emissions reduction project ever undertaken by the local government sector in Australia.

Together we have pooled our electricity needs into one long-term contract with Red Energy to source renewable energy generated from Victorian wind farms. This will save 260,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere each year – the same as taking 90,000 cars off the road.

Being part of VECO also equals cost savings. Brimbank Council will save up to 23 per cent on its electricity bill annually (compared to pre-July 2021).

Traffic noise causes headache

By Tara Murray Ardeer residents say they just want some peace and quiet.

Residents who live near the Western Ring Road say noise coming from the road, and nearby Ballarat Road, continues to worsen and keeps them up at night.

Kevin, who did not want his last name published, said the noise was a nightmare.

“It has been going on for years,” he said.

“The traffic noise comes from the road between Furlong and Tilburn roads in Ardeer.

“What they call noise barriers might have been sufficient back in 1996 when it was built, but they aren’t sufficient now and only half of the section has noise barriers.

“I’ve got an overpass here and it goes over to Ballarat Road and it has no noise barriers … it’s just terrible.”

Kevin said he and other residents had complained about the noise to VicRoads and Brimbank council over the years but little had changed.

Star Weekly has seen letters from residents as far back as 2011 raising concerns about the

noise in the area. Residents met with council and VicRoads in 2018.

Among the solutions Kevin sought was truck engine brake signs and noise barriers across the whole road.

“They could put up bigger noise barriers,” he said. “We must have technology these days that can come up with something on the bitumen that can reduce the noise.

“Engines are another thing, noisy cars, noisy motorcycles, truck exhaust, the list goes on.”

Kevin, who has recently retired, said he was noticing the noise even more now.

He said unless something is done, residents will continue to suffer.

“I know of a resident who recently bought a house, but moved out as it was too noisy. It just doesn’t stop.”

A Department of Transport spokesperson said the department takes traffic noise seriously and that a recent study found the noise walls in place on the ring road were sufficient.

The study, conducted in 2018, found noise levels did not exceed the trigger for consideration of noise barrier retrofitting under the VicRoads Traffic Noise Reduction Policy.

Navy band inspires The Australian Royal Navy Band proved to be an inspiration for students at Catholic Regional College in Caroline Springs last week.

With the school in the process of starting its own concert band, the navy band visit gave students a first-hand look at performing and the instruments.

CRCC head of music performance Chris McGillen said it was an exciting day for the students.

“I was really surprised to find out there was only one other school in our region that is running a concert band,” he said.

“We had 267 year 7 students at the concert with the navy band and they really enjoyed it. Part of the experience was that they demonstrated the instruments, which is really important.”

Dr McGillen said concert bands have been in schools since the 1980s.

“Students learn together in small groups and

then come together as a big group and have fun,” he said.

“It’s a common way to get kids engaged in music and playing songs they know. We’ll look to have them perform at school events.”

Dr McGillen said being in the band was voluntary, with a big focus on getting the year 7s involved.

He said long-term the school would like to have at least 20 per cent of the student population learning an instrument, with plans to include big band and jazz ensembles.

Health merger approved Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health services will become one, with the state government approving an amalgamation between the two services. The two health providers announced in March that they had agreed to a voluntary amalgamation, which was ticked off last week.

It follows two years of extensive community and staff consultation across both health services and communities. It is hoped the voluntary amalgamation will ensure a greater co-ordination of health services across the west and improve access to health services while focusing on the community’s future healthcare needs.

Life-saving partnership Western United coaches and staff will receive vital first aid training as a part of a new sponsorship agreement with local provider Results First Aid Training The Truganina-based company and United have signed a 12 month partnership, which will help the club provide a safer environment for those on and off the field.

Members of Western United’s executive team have already attended a first aid training session, with up to 100 people to receive the training during the next 12 months.

Results First Aid Training chief executive Jude Barnes said the company was excited to work with Western United.

“Sporting clubs like WUFC are often the hub around which great communities are built,

providing much-needed social and sporting activities for everyone,” she said.

“We love sport because it contributes so much to keeping people fit and healthy. But it does involve injuries.

“That’s why it’s so important for the WUFC to have people at all levels of the club trained in first aid to be able to support medical staff on the field and be ready to assist off the field as well.

“The best first aid training in CPR … is often a life-saver, as we saw recently with that poor soccer player in Europe who collapsed on the field and whose life was saved by quick application of CPR.”

Victorians have more freedoms following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions on Friday. People can now have up to 15 visitors to their home daily, while up to 50 people can gather outside. Crowds are allowed at community sporting events, indoor sporting events can resume, and there is an increase on the number of people permitted in restaurants and at funerals and weddings. Masks still must be worn indoors. These rules will be in place for the next two weeks.

Theatres and major sporting events are set to have their crowd numbers increased further next week.

Soil decision concerns council

By Tara Murray and Oliver Lees Brimbank council fears the decision to dump soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP) in Bulla will impact Keilor residents.

Transurban and builder CPB-John Holland confirmed last Thursday they had signed a contract to commence building the facility required to receive and treat the soil at the Hi-Quality site on Sunbury Road.

It was one of three potential destinations for the three million tonne soil relocation project, the others being Maddingley Brown Coal in

Bacchus Marsh and Cleanaway in Ravenhall.

Brimbank council had joined forces with Melton council calling for the soil not to be stored in Ravenhall.

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said the Bulla site, in the neighbouring Hume municipality, wasn’t the ideal location either.

“Brimbank and Melbourne’s west have been disproportionately impacted by soil contamination, pollution, congestion and impacts on the natural environment.

“Brimbank council is concerned about plans for the Hi-Quality Group to expand their Bulla

facility for the treatment, storage and disposal of PFAS impacted soil excavated from the West Gate Tunnel Project.

“We wrote to the minister expressing these concerns in 2020. “[It] may have impacts for residents in Brimbank and further expose our community to soil contaminants.”

Cr Rasic said any future work approval needs to provide the residents of Keilor with assurance they will not be impacted by the processing and storage of PFAS contaminated soils at Bulla.

Hume council had already launched legal proceedings in the Supreme Court to stop the soil being dumped in Bulla. A directions hearing will be held on July 27.

Hume council mayor Joseph Haweil told Star Weekly he has never supported Hi-Quality as a location for the toxic soil.

“We’re very dismayed by this decision, we have opposed this project from day one,” Cr Haweil said.

“My understanding is that the legal process continues as planned, but we are still awaiting legal advice.”

Lantern festival to return Ms Nguyen said it was good to be planning a festival again, with COVID-19 hugely affecting the Vietnamese community.

“As most of our activities are performing art, COVID has caused huge impact,” she said.

“Our performers can’t get together for dance workshops and there’s no shows with support directly from the audience.

“Connections have somehow been lost.

Some members are trying to withdraw from online activities as they are not familiar with the technology and feel that it is too hard.

“Our group has been working extremely hard to maintain the mental health of the group, to keep the connection, to support each other.”

The Pasefika Hub in Sunshine and North Sunshine Tennis Club also received funding in the recent round of VicHealth grants.

The colour and celebrations of the traditional lantern festival will return to St Albans’ Alfrieda Street mall this year.

The Australian Vietnamese Association’s (AVA) lantern festival will be held on September 25, with the help of a VicHealth grant.

AVA’s Mai Nguyen said the grant would make a huge difference for the group.

“With the funding we can provide support to our volunteers, bringing volunteers back with the activities that they love,” she said.

“We can now re-engage the seniors to participate in the traditional festival that brings back their beautiful childhood memories, they can pass these on to the young generation who are born here.

Campaign to curb knife crime

By Tara Murray Crime Stoppers Victoria, police and medical professionals are calling on young people to think about the consequences of carrying a knife.

A joint campaign, ‘Lose the Knife, Not a Life’, highlights several incidents where a young person has been seriously injured or killed due to knife violence.

A teenager has been charged with murder after the stabbing of 17-year-old Bless Mulukwat Akoch at Eagle Stadium in Werribee

in May, while 11 teenagers are facing murder charges following the stabbing of 15-year-old Solomone Taufeulungaki in Deer Park in June last year.

Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith is asking young people to stop picking up a knife.

“If you use a knife to hurt someone, that person will either retaliate or suffer a serious injury,” she said.

“Either way, two young lives are at risk. One is at risk of ending up in prison and the other is at risk of being killed.”

As part of the campaign, the Alfred Hospital has released a video to help young people understand the serious health and safety risks involved in carrying a knife.

Alfred deputy head of trauma Dr Meei Yeung says despite what young people may think, there’s no such thing as a safe stab injury.

North West Metro Region Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said one life cut short is one life too many.

He called for parents to talk with their children if they do come across a knife.

“Police will catch them sooner or later and they will be in serious trouble,” he said.

“Worse, if they use it, the consequences are devastating – for the victim, the families and even for the young offender.

“Carrying a knife for self-defence is illegal.

Bringing a knife to a fight is illegal. Using a knife to threaten someone is illegal.

“The odds are that if a young person has one on them, sooner or later they will use it. That’s why campaigns like this are important.”

Show of support Hue Man Dang’s life was changed when she became involved with the Western Chances Scholarship program.

The program offers scholarships to students across Melbourne’s west to help them with their studies.

Ms Dang first received a scholarship in 2013 and has received one every year since as she has gone from high school to university.

“In high school, I was nominated by my psychology teacher and welfare co-ordinator,” she said.

“I hadn’t ever heard about the program before that, so I was so honoured when she put up my name.

“Western Chances isn’t just about the monetary support for me, it is a recognition of my potential as a young person to be able to be an achiever.

“The belief that Western Chances places within me motivates me to continue on my

journey because I know that I’m not alone.”

Ms Dang, the 2019 Brimbank young citizen of the year, has used the scholarship to help buy textbooks and Myki tickets and engage in a range of self-development opportunities.

According to Western Chance, almost half of its scholarship recipients over the past three years have come from Brimbank.

Brimbank council recently added $30,000 for the program to its budget for each of the next three years to help the program continue.

Western Chances chief executive Zac Lewis said the funding from the council was vital, especially after the impact of COVID-19.

“COVID has a huge impact on young people, particularly in the west,” he said.

“The demand for scholarships is up 10 per cent on the previous 12 months. It’s been hard for us to raise funds.”

By Tara Murray A facility offering an environmentally-friendly alternative to landfills won’t be built in Melbourne’s north-west, with the state’s peak waste management body opting out of the project.

Councils across Melbourne’s north-west had been working with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG) on the procurement of an advanced waste processing facility for the region which would allow waste to be put to good use rather than being dumped in a tip.

But it was revealed at a recent Brimbank council meeting that MWRRG had advised council the project would not go ahead due

to state government funding constraints. A similar project is proceeding in Melbourne’s south-east.

Brimbank council will write to Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’ambrosio to lobby for funding for the north-west project.

Councillor Bruce Lancashire said the council was concerned about the implications the decision not to proceed would have on Brimbank and the west.

“In the south-east of Melbourne we are seeing a waste facility built… And we want to see the same thing in the north-west. That is fairly simple and so logical,” he said.

“If you don’t do that, where does that leave us in Brimbank and the west? It leaves us putting

our rubbish in a tip. Possibly the scenario might be we have to send it all off to an incinerator and produce massive amounts of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases.

“None of this is at all desirable… We are left in limbo.”

Cr Lancashire and Cr Virginia Tachos highlighted that the council and residents had paid millions in fees to the state government through the landfill levy and the community deserved to get something in return.

Cr Tachos said that if nothing changes, landfills in Brimbank will become the legacies for future generations.

MWRGG chief executive Jillian Riseley confirmed that the program in the north-west wouldn’t go ahead.

Mr Obeid, who is studying a bachelor of education and sport science at Victoria University, is vision impaired, having been diagnosed with Stargardt disease when he was 13.

While he said winning the money was good, he was keen to encourage others living with a disability to dream big.

“Ever since I was diagnosed, I’ve just kept doing what I can,” he said. “I take all the opportunities I can take, including applying for game shows.”

Mr Obeid has represented Australia on several vision-impaired or blind sport teams and is a big sports fan.

“My love of sport has been my one constant

“Nothing could be more fulfilling for me than combining my love of sport with a career guiding the next generation as a PE teacher.”

“With my winnings, I’m planning to travel to Europe once the pandemic is over – my dream is to go to soccer games in each country.”

Mr Obeid last night watched his winning episode of Millionaire Hot Seat with his family, most of whom knew he had won the prize.

“My dad doesn’t know,” he said before the show aired. “He’ll be lost for words.”

St Albans’ Steve Obeid plans to travel around Europe and do some home renovations after winning $50,000 on channel nine’s Millionaire Hot Seat.

The 25-year-old appeared on Monday night’s show where he correctly answered J.R.R. Tolkien as the author who invented the fictional metal ‘mithril’ to win the $50,000.

Mr Obeid said he knew the answer to the question the minute it was read out.

“I did some trivia stuff with friends and there was that question,” he said.

“As soon as it popped up, I knew the question.

I was nervous to say the answer as I was so confident and didn’t want to be wrong.”

One of the major concerns for residents is the Albion Flyover, with locals calling for it to be rethought.

Mr Ryan revealed Rail Projects Victoria had considered three different route options before settling on the flyover.

He said one of the main reasons an underground option was ruled out was the location of a jet fuel line that supplied most of the fuel to Melbourne airport.

“Moving that fuel line is very time intensive … takes a very long time to seek the approvals and is a very disruptive process,” he said.

“To achieve a rail under solution you need to remove that fuel line so that wipes out the solution immediately.”

He said the third solution – at-grade tracks – would have taken a lot longer to build, cause more disruptions to road and rail users, take more space on the ground plains and cost millions more to build.

As part of the scope of works there will be some upgrades to Albion station and the surrounding areas, but not an overall station upgrade.

“The airport rail train was never intended to stop there [Albion],” Mr Ryan said.

“There will be some minor upgrades to the station, because some of it is in pretty poor condition.

“We are doing shared user paths, connections for the part of the bicycle network which are missing, a lot of landscaping and greening up of the area.

“Then on the west side, the side that abuts the flour mill … We want to activate that strip of land so when the development occurs it’s not just an island in its own little area.”

Mr Foa and Mr Ryan said there had been a lot of discussions with key stakeholders, including Brimbank council.

“We’ve been working really closely with Brimbank council for some time now, we look forward to continuing working with them,” Mr Ryan said.

“They’ve got a really clear vision for their precinct … From our perspective we want to not only work with them on airport rail, but on the precinct planning.”

The next phase of community consultation is to start this week and will focus on a number of elements between Sunshine and the M80 Western Ring Road.

The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards are part of the annual Victorian Seniors Festival.

The festival featured as a “reimagined” special for 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The reimagined festival took physical distancing into account, and was broadcast straight into people’s homes. The festival featured 131 video performances, and interviews with 146 performers, and had more than 160,000 virtual visitors to its website.

The festival will be back in person in October 2021, to celebrate award recipients and their achievements.

Seniors in the spotlight The ‘invaluable’ contributions seniors make to the community will be celebrated later this year as part of the annual Victorian Seniors Festival, writes Michaela Meade.

or more than 20 years, the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards have celebrated the efforts of older Victorians to support, assist and encourage others within their communities.

Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Luke Donnellan said the awards will hold a “special meaning” in 2021, following the COVID-19 pandemic during which many seniors managed to maintain their involvement in community service despite lockdowns and uncertainty.

“The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards is our opportunity to celebrate the invaluable contributions senior Victorians make to our state,” Mr Donnellan said.

“It is more important than ever to thank these incredible seniors for sharing their skills, experience and time with the community.”

Award categories include: Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year; Promotion of Multiculturalism Award; Healthy and Active Living Award; Ageing Well Award; COTA Victorian Senior Awards; and the Veteran Community Award.

Peter Burquest was the recipient of the 2019 Veteran Community Award and is a Vietnam War veteran. He was nominated as an acknowledgement of his volunteer service to the Australian veteran community and his commitment in supporting young Victorians who come from underprivileged backgrounds.

Mr Burquest said he was surprised to be nominated for the “great honour”.

“There are so many people in the community looking after our senior citizens on a voluntary basis,” he said.

“I’m a little bit humbled by [the award].

“I’m enjoying what I’m doing, and I think whilst the award was a bit more than I was expecting myself, it’s good for the community,

“Many people are as worthy of such an award similar to this, if we just look at the bigger picture.”

Mr Burquest co-founded the Caroline Springs RSL Sub-branch, which he said was the beginning of his extensive involvement in the community.

“That was the yardstick that kicked me off on being involved with more senior veterans,” he said.

“The RSL’s been really important for me in keeping up with the community.

“We have quite a number of senior members on our list – war widows and ex-service persons – many who are not required to pay membership.

“Seniors have made an important contribution to communities, they have been integral in the development of this country and we, the country, owe a lot to them.

“They’ve paid their taxes, they’ve done the hard yards, they just sometimes need some help, and we should be available to make that happen.

“COVID has presented some real challenges, for our more senior socially-isolated group particularly, but we’ve been there to assist via our welfare visits/phone calls and small food packages during the long lockdown.”

The sub-branch now boasts 258 members, and a turnover of about $300,000 a year.

Mr Burquest said establishing the sub-branch from the ground up was “probably my greatest

community achievement”.

“The development of the RSL was a hell of a ride for me in the early days, for nobody had any experience in starting a sub-branch,” he said. “Having started a brand new RSL, and not taking over something already established, it proved to be quite difficult.

“Our purpose was to assist young troops returning from Afghanistan [and] Iraq as well as the roles mentioned above.”

Each award nominee receives a certificate acknowledging their work. Award recipients are honoured at Government House at the Victorian Seniors Festival in October each year.

St Albans incomes below average

By Tara Murray St Albans residents are among the lowest paid in metropolitan Melbourne, according to recently released Australian Taxation Office data.

The tax office income data reveals that the average taxable income across the country was $62,549 for the 2018-19 financial year.

However, the average taxable income in St Albans for 2018-19 was $42,707, well below the

national average.

It was a slight increase of $483 on the average 2017-18 taxable income in the suburb.

Broadmeadows, Coolaroo and Meadow Heights, Clayton and Springvale were the only metropolitan Melbourne suburbs to record lower average taxable incomes in 2018-19.

The average taxable income in the 3020 postcode, which includes Sunshine, was $46,453, up from $45,106 in the 2017-18.

Keilor residents earned the most in

Brimbank, with an average taxable income of $68,827, followed by Keilor Park ($63,001) and Keilor Lodge ($57,584).

Residents in the 3037 postcode, including Hillside, Sydenham and Delahey, earned on average $56,293 in taxable income, while the average income in the 3023 postcode was $54,551. The average taxable income for Ardeer residents was $50,227.

The average taxable income increased from 2017-18 to 2018-19 across all Brimbank

postcodes. The 3023 postcode, including Burnside and Caroline Springs, had the most people lodge tax returns in Brimbank and surrounding suburbs in 2018-19.

The figures showed males continued to earn more than women, while surgeons are the highest earners, with an average taxable income in 2018-19 of $394,303. Health professions made up five of the 10 highest earners while hospitality workers and cleaners were among the lowest paid.

Exhbition gets real An exhibition combining the work of local school students and an internationally renowned artist will be on show at CS Gallery throughout July Real Local is a series of intimate, vibrant portraits by award-winning artist Atong Atem which delve into how we construct images to understand ourselves and our history.

The work was recently exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and internationally in New York and Milan.

Real Local will also display works from a collaborative project with local students from Staughton College and Melton Secondary College who created their own self-portraits during a four-week mentoring program with Atem.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik encouraged residents to visit the exhibition during these school holidays.

There will also be an exhibition at Melton library from July until September 9.

“These exhibitions each tell a special story that will resonate with so many people,” Cr Majdlik said.

“It’s fantastic to see the creative works of highly talented locally and internationallyrecognised artists on display here in the City of Melton.

“Art like this is inspiring, fun, and thought-provoking and I’d encourage everyone to take the opportunity to experience these exhibitions, especially these school holidays.”

Real Local will be on show from July 1 through to July 25.

New principal named

COVID breach: Business shut

By Benjamin Millar Deanside’s new primary school will have an experienced principal at the helm following the appointment of long-time local Stuart Telford to the role.

Mr Telford has been chosen as the foundation principal of Grasslands (Deanside) Primary School, set to open its doors at the start of 2022.

Currently the principal at Ardeer South Primary School in Sunshine West, Mr Telford has lived in the Melton area for 25 years and has spent the majority of his education career locally.

The avid runner now hopes to hit the ground running as the new school’s first principal.

“I am genuinely excited about the opportunity to work alongside the Deanside community to create a vision of a high-performing primary school that has a clear focus on the academic, social and emotional needs of our young people, underpinned by a culture of high expectations for all,” he said.

“I advocate strongly for quality education for kids in the west and I am a passionate educator driven to provide high quality learning opportunities for local students.”

The school is being built to accommodate 525 pupils from prep to year 6, with space for pupils to be active, natural outdoor areas that reflect the surrounding environment, and modern learning facilities that support diverse curriculums.

Mr Telford said that starting a new school from scratch has many practical challenges, but his focus is upon the many opportunities for students, families and staff.

“As a resident, parent and educator it will be my goal to ensure that the area has a primary school that leads the way in education initiatives and delivers a high quality curriculum for all

students to reach their full potential,” he said.

“With the right foundations in place and doing the groundwork, we can see the current worksite turn into lush grasslands that allowing Deanside students to flourish and grow as learners.”

A two-room interim kindergarten will be co-located on the site and operate until Melton council’s permanent facility is built next door.

Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said she is excited by the appointment of someone with Mr Telford’s experience and priorities.

A St Albans business is among seven businesses shut down in the past three months as part of a crackdown on COVIDSafe compliance.

Authorised officers have visited 22,000 businesses during the past three months, handing out 17 infringements totalling $52,867 and issued a further 275 written warnings, 598 improvement notices and 40 COVID-19 notices for non-compliance with the chief health officer’s (CHO) directions.

As part of the crackdown, a retail store in St Albans was shut down for unauthorised trading during lockdown.

The government’s on-the-ground engagement team will continue to visit businesses to ensure they understand their obligations and help them to become compliant. Officers are checking that businesses are using the QR code check-in system.

Community complaints about businesses failing to comply with CHO directions will be followed up.

Acting Police and Emergency Services Minister Danny Pearson said the directions were in place to keep everyone safe.

“This is a warning to all businesses – if you flagrantly breach the rules, we will not hesitate to issue fines or even shut you down to protect public safety.”

Construction continues at the Williamstown Road interchange During 2021

West Gate Tunnel Project crews have been building foundations to support two new ramps above the Williamstown Road interchange. The new ramps will connect the West Gate Freeway to Hyde Street and take trucks off local roads by providing a direct connection to industrial areas in the inner-west.

What’s happening next Crews are moving into the next major stage of works which will require regular overnight closures of the interchange. Closing the interchange will provide crews the space they need to safely set up and operate the crane and for large trucks to deliver the bridge beams onto site.

Preparedness can stop tax time from becoming taxing The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is guiding first-time lodgers on some simple things they can do right now to make lodgement quick, secure and easy at tax time.

“Tax may seem daunting, but it doesn’t need to be,” Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh said.

“There’s a lot of information out there about tax, so we’ve provided some basic steps to help you get started. The best advice for first-time lodgers is to be prepared – whether you choose to use the services of a registered tax agent or lodge your own return.”

1. Check whether you need to lodge a return “As a general rule, you’ll need to lodge if you’ve had tax taken out of your pay or earned over $18,200 during the financial year,” Mr Loh said.

“You’ll need to either lodge your own return or get on the books of a registered tax agent by 31 October. If you lodge yourself, myTax is the way to go. Most people with simple tax affairs can lodge in under half-an-hour, with most refunds received in less than two weeks.”

If you’re unsure of whether you need to lodge a return, the ATO’s ‘Do I need to lodge’ tool will help you work that out. You can access the tool through the ATO website. If you don’t need to lodge, simply let us know by submitting a non-lodgement advice (through ATO online services in your myGov account).

2. Track down your Tax File Number (TFN) Your TFN is your personal identifier for tax and superannuation purposes; it’s an important part of your identity.

“It’s yours for life, even if you change your name, job, or where you live. It will stay the same – so it’s important to keep it secure,” Mr Loh said.

“Not sure what your TFN is? You can find it on documents such as super statements or ATO letters. You can also find your TFN in ATO online services accessed through your myGov account.”

You would have provided your TFN, amongst other details, to your employer when you started work in a TFN declaration – this is used by your employer to determine how much tax to withhold from your pay.

“If you don’t have a TFN, you can apply by filling in the form on our website and booking an appointment at a participating Australia Post outlet.

“It’s completely free.”

3. Create a myGov account and link it to the ATO If you decide to lodge your return yourself, then you’ll need to set up a myGov account if you haven’t already.

Your myGov account opens the door to a range of Australian government services, including the ATO. All you need is a secure email address. Remember, each myGov account must have a different email address and don’t share your login details with anyone.

Protect your myGov account as if it were your bank account.

You can now connect your myGov account using the flexible and secure myGovID app.

“Set yourself up for success by creating your myGov account and linking to the ATO now.

When linking, you’ll be prompted to answer two questions, based on records we have,” Mr Loh said.

If we don’t have enough information to confirm your identity, you’ll need to phone the ATO to get a unique linking code which can be entered instead of answering the questions.

“If you need to call us, we encourage you to do so now to avoid any delays when you choose to lodge your tax return. We suggest having your identification information, such as your TFN, driver’s licence, or Medicare card, ready to go,” Mr Loh said.

“Once you’ve linked to the ATO, you can not only lodge your tax return online, but you can also track your refund, view your super balance, study loan amounts and income statements.”

4. Lodge your return “A common mistake we see when people lodge their returns is leaving out important information, such as income from dividends or your private health insurance information, which can slow down your return,” Mr Loh said.

Whether you lodge yourself or with a registered tax agent, by late July, information from employers, banks, health funds,

government agencies and more, will automatically be added to your tax return.

If you want to lodge earlier, before this information is ready, you must take extra care to add all your income.

“Another mistake we see that can set you back is forgetting to keep receipts for any deductions you want to claim.”

The most common deductions are expenses directly related to earning your income, such as steel-capped boots for construction workers.

You can also claim charitable donations you make to deductible gift recipients.

“The new windfall gain tax is particularly concerning and appears to take a disproportionate share of property value from landowners that are in fact helping to support the growth in housing supply that helps keep affordability in check across regional Victoria,” Ms Nield said.

“These increasing taxes will impact land prices and home buyers at all levels at a time when housing affordability has fallen, particularly in the regions.”

HIA’s latest housing affordability data shows that Victorian housing affordability deteriorated in late 2020 and early 2021 – especially in the regions. This was driven by a surge in dwelling prices over these six months while average weekly earnings stagnated.

“These new taxes will dampen demand for housing at the wrong time for Victoria. With HomeBuilder ending and immigration unlikely to return for some time, making this type of decision now will put further pressure on an already declining demand.”

“Rising property taxes announced by the Victorian government will hurt Victorian home buyers,” stated HIA executive director Fiona Nield.

The government announced on May 15 that it will be increasing land tax and stamp duty rates on certain property transactions, along with a new ‘windfall gain’ tax on some land where rezoning has provided an uplift in property values.

“It is unfair to be taxing land owners further on property when Victoria already has the highest stamp duty rates in the country.

“It is also short-sighted to be adding a greater tax burden on housing when it already contributes up to half of the state’s revenue each year. Equally the activity generated from residential development supports jobs and economic activity and is key to supporting all Victorians as the state recovers from the economic shock of COVID-19.

“New taxes like these are passed on in higher land prices for all and stamp duty inhibits people from selling properties to allow for new homes to be built – it has direct impact on new housing affordability.

“Changing the goal posts after property has been purchased is unfair. It seems this will particularly impact in regional Victoria – as some urban growth land in Melbourne

The original Audi TT was offered with 1.8-litre four-cylinder engines, in either light-pressure or high-pressure turbocharger.

The higher-powered variants have the traction advantage of Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive.

The capacity of the four-cylinder unit was increased to 2.0 litres using a turbocharged with the second-generation TT. In December 2004, a 3.2-litre V6 was squeezed under the bonnet of the Audi TT coupe, but not the roadster. The V6 also received the quattro system. A five-cylinder 2.5-litre RS engine with quattro was added to the range late in 2009.

Straight-line performance is good in even the smaller-engined models due to the TT’s relatively light weight.

A six-speed manual was used in TT quattros from the start. Front-drive cars had five-speed manual gearboxes until August 2005, when a six-speed manual arrived.

No automatic transmission was offered until

March 2003, when a six-speed torque-converter auto was offered with the low-pressure engines.

A six-speed double-clutch (S tronic in Audi speak) is fitted to the Audi TT 3.2 quattro.

Early generation double-clutch gearboxes can be painful at very low speeds, such as when parking. Test drive one in stop-start conditions to see what you think.

Audi TT is a high-tech car and should only be serviced and repaired by professionals.

Good amateurs can tackle some of the routine maintenance work should they be so inclined. Spare parts prices aren’t cheap, but are in keeping with others in this class. Check on insurance as premiums vary quite a bit, though this seems to be settling into mid-range figures in recent years.

Check the engine starts quickly, even when it’s stone cold. If there are any doubts try to arrange to come back first thing in the morning to have it completely cold.

Gearchanges should be reasonably light, but remember the gearbox is a long way from the shift lever. This can give it a slightly spongy feel in older models.

Look for signs of previous crash repairs. A ripply finish in any of the panels, or a mismatch in paint colour from one section to the other are fairly easy to spot.

If there’s the slightest concern about possible crash history either get a full professional inspection - or find another TT. Check the roadster’s roof seals correctly when it is closed and that it doesn’t have any tears or cuts. Look at the carpets and the floor under them for the slightest sign of dampness.

Uneven tyre wear at the front possibly indicates hard driving, or it may mean the TT has thumped kerbs. Both cause for concern.

The very stylish Audi TT was launched in1998.

It had fascinating style and created a great deal of attention, from the motoring press and car lovers in general.

The domed exterior lines of the body carry through to the cabin, with large circular dials and ventilation outlets.

Audi TT first reached Australia in May 1999.

The second-generation TT, introduced Down Under in November 2006, wasn’t as striking in its shape. That changed with the launch of the third generation here in February 2015, seeing the TT go back to a restyle of the original.

Used versions of the first-generation Audi TT are getting on in years, but one with a clean service record and sensible driving is worth considering.

Despite having the underpinnings of a VW Golf major repairs can be expensive.

Audi TT is great fun to drive but, in the front-drive models feels more like a warm hatch than a full-on sports model.

The third generation was launched in 2014.

It is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform.In the early years there were several fatal high-speed Audi TT crashes in Europe, principally in Germany. These were caused by a design flaw. The aerodynamics weren’t quite right and the problem was exacerbated by the TT’s very short wheelbase.

Later models were modified in their suspension and have a rear wing to push the tail to the road at speed. The wing spoils the purity of the visual effect in the eyes of TT purists. Your call…

Woods heads to draft combine

By Benjamin Millar Western Jets rising star Jemima Woods has taken a big step on the path to the AFLW, snaring a highly sought invite to the competition’s key pre-draft talent showcase.

The gun Bacchus Marsh teen, who has also pulled on the jersey for the Western Bulldogs VFLW, is one of a handful of NAB League players invited to attend the AFLW Draft Combine, which puts prospects through their paces prior to the NAB AFL Women’s Draft at the end of July.

Woods, 18, said she is excited by the opportunity to demonstrate she can mix it with some of the game’s best.

“It was pretty surprising as not many girls got picked this year,” she said.

“At the start of the NAB league season it was my goal to get to this point, so it feels pretty good.”

The journey for the talented forward and midfielder stretches back to involvement in Auskick around the age of five, followed by steady progress through her teens.

She said people’s attitudes to women’s football have come along in leaps and bounds during that time.

“It was so weird, when all the girls actually started playing and the AFLW took off it was suddenly cool to play now,” she said.

“That was a big change, all the girls were playing netball and basketball and stuff and now they’re playing footy as well.”

Woods said she still enjoys watching the elite men’s teams go round, but the chance to see women living out her dream at the top level is a real inspiration as well.

“It’s cool because earlier you just had to watch the boys play, which was cool as well, but watching the girls play you get more of an idea of what the game is like at that level.”

Woods is now setting her sights on taking her own game to that level as early as this summer, hoping to catch the eye of recruiters at the draft combine.

“My game has definitely improved the second half of the season, I moved around positions a bit, moved a bit more in the midfield, and that’s worked well for me,” she said.

“I still like to play in the forward line though, swapping into the midfield.”

Woods said her VFLW experience has also been a great opportunity to mix it with some of the game’s best.

“A lot of the AFLW girls are also rotating through that comp, so it’s been really cool training with them and playing with them,” she said.

SPORT Keilor Park keeps one eye on the future Keilor Park’s focus on youth is starting to pay off in Football Victoria state league 1 north-west.

The club has worked hard the past few years to get a strong junior program in place and is starting to see some of those young players come through.

Coach Paul Falzon said they had a good young crop of players.

“We’ve been trying to get a program up and going and identifying youth players. It has come to fruition this year with a few players who have come through into reserves and now into seniors. It’s great for the future of the club and it shows other players at the club that they can push for selection.”

As part of the growth of their youngsters, the club’s under-18 and under-21 players train alongside the senior squad.

“This year’s squad is exciting to watch, it is very fast, high-press, attacking play – looking

to score at every opportunity,” Falzon said.

While the club is happy with the progress of its younger players, Falzon said the “tough competition” was challenging.

“The club always strives to win every game and obtain promotion; however, we have added a youth development program to ensure sustained success into the future. This has meant that we have not achieved our winning expectations this year, but we are experiencing great growth in our players.”

The club drew its first game back after the COVID-19 break, conceding a couple of soft goals. Falzon said that while there had been a disadvantage having a break, it also gave the players an opportunity to rest.

He said the club was realistic about its expectations this season, with a big focus on next year.

“It is about trying to stabilise yourself and get the younger players familiar with what we want

to do. “We’re hoping next year we can push to try and get into the NPL [National Premier League]. We want to keep this group together and add a few more players.”

Keilor Park’s men’s side was due to face Essendon Royals on Friday night.

President Ben Di-Lorenzo said the club was continuing to find ways to get more people involved in the club.

“The club is an all-ability and inclusive club that has soccer programs suited for five-year-old to senior female and male players with over 80 per cent of our players and members living in the area. We take pride in developing inclusive programs for the local community and this year we are proud to be running the Go Soccer Mums program with over 30 mothers of our players training and enjoying the game of soccer.”

Knights focus on youth

By Tara Murray A youthful Melbourne Knights squad is heading in the right direction in the National Premier League.

Under new coach Steve Bebic, the Knights sit fifth on the ladder, with a 7-3-4 record, and have been putting together some really strong performances.

Bebic’s aim when he joined the Knights was to put together a youthful squad with one eye on the future.

“When I got appointed there were 13-14 players remaining from last season’s squad,” he said of the club that went without a win in the five rounds played last season before the season was called off.

“We had a fair bit of turnover for several reasons. The focus we put in was a longer-term plan, so the players can hopefully grow with the club. There were three or four younger boys here and we got seven or eight new players from 22 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 29 June, 2021

across Australia.

“In terms of recruitment, we looked at players who were under the age of 22 or 23 who suited the way we wanted to play.”

Bebic said they were unlikely to see the full potential of the group for two to three years.

He said the club remained focused on bringing through young players.

Bebic said he was happy with the first part of the season, with a COVID-19 lockdown halting the season for three weeks.

“It’s been very positive overall,” he said.

“We had 13-odd games and our performances, all but one against Bentleigh Greens, has been where it has needed to be.

“We’ve been unlucky not to have a couple more wins.”

The Knights resumed their season with a 3-2 win against Hume City, in an important match in the race for the top six and a finals spot.

Bebic said it was a strong performance on the road against a team that had proven hard to

beat at home. Just eight points separates the top eight teams after 14 rounds.

Bebic said it would be an interesting few weeks across the competition to see how all the teams handle the mid-season break.

“I think the next three to four weeks we’ll see how the break affects us and other teams,” he said.

“We want to remain competitive and keep the standard high and make our supporters proud which is the main aim.

“Hopefully we can make finals. For us though it’s more about the process driven than the results.

“The results will take care of itself and that’s what we felt happened in the first half of the season.

“Any team could go on a run of three or four matches. Anything can happen.”

Ladder leaders Keilor Thunder has received a boost, signing a former Big V men’s most valuable player for the rest of this year’s championship division season.

Having already been one of the top teams of the competition with an 8-2 record before the COVID-19 lockdown postponed three rounds, the Thunder last week announced that Nelson Kirksey had signed for the rest of this year.

Kirksey, who won the competition’s top individual honour in 2018 while playing with the Hawthorn Magic, was last seen in the competition in 2019.

He averaged 21 points a game that season, along with four rebounds and three assists. His form in the competition resulted in him being scouted by other teams.

He signed with the Hume City Broncos for the 2020 season but didn’t pull on the jersey for the Broncos because of the pandemic.

The American has been keeping up his basketball, most recently playing in the New Zealand National Basketball League with the Taranaki Mountainairs.

He averaged nearly 17 minutes a game, scoring an average of 6.5 points per game. His team’s season is over, freeing him up to return to Australia.

Thunder coach Liam Glascott told the Big V website that he believes the addition of Kirksey would elevate the team in their run towards finals.

“Kirksey has been a well-respected player throughout the competition for the past three to four seasons,” Glascott said. “Personally, having coached against him and having relationships with his previous coaches, I’m excited to see what he can cement in our squad towards the business end of the season.”

The Thunder was set to recommence its season on Saturday night against Blackburn after a break due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Due to the missed weeks, the Big V season will be extended by two weeks.

The home and away season will be extended by three rounds to accommodate the three postponed rounds, while the final series across all divisions will be reduced by at least a week to fit in all regular season games.
