COVID takes a heavy toll

By Alesha Capone Wyndham police responded to an average of 10 family violence incidents every day in the 12 months to March, 2021.

In that time, 3800 family violence incidents were reported, a 15.1 per cent rise on the 3301 incidents reported in the 12 months to March, 2020, according to latest data.

Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) data shows that incident numbers in Wyndham reflect a statewide trend of family violence reports increasing since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Lawrence, from the Westgate Family Violence Investigation Unit, said the data “indicates family violence issues were clearly exacerbated by people spending long durations confined to their homes together”.

“Societal issues such as mental health, financial difficulties and unemployment were also identified as factors in several family violence reports we received last year,” he said.

“While any increase is alarming, this increase can also highlight an improvement in community confidence to report these crimes to police and demonstrates that we will act and

respond to any report of family violence.”

Women’s Health West (WHW), a not-for-profit organisation that provides assistance for women and children who experience family violence in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Brimbank, Moonee Valley and Melbourne, has also faced an increase in demand for support since the start of the pandemic.

WHW received 13,272 family violence referrals from Victoria Police between March 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021 – the most the service has received within a 12-month period and a 12 per cent incrase from the same period

in 2019-2020.

WHW chief executive Robyn Gregory said it was important for people experiencing family violence to know they could still seek help.

“Violence is never acceptable in the home and a pandemic is not an excuse for violence,” Dr Gregory said.

Fringe suburbs lead building boom

By Alesha Capone Four Wyndham suburbs are among the nation’s growth hotspots for new housing builds.

Rockbank – Mount Cottrell, which is shared between the Melton and Wyndham municipalities, is second in overall growth according to the Housing Industry Association’s latest Population and Residential Building Hotspots report. The report defined hotspots as locations where at least $150 million in residential building work was

approved during the 2019-20 financial year and where the rate of population growth was faster than the 1.3 per cent national average.

Rockbank recorded a 29.1 per cent annual population growth rate and $501.99 million in building approvals for the 12 month period.

Werribee west was seventh with an annual population growth rate of 14.3 per cent and $276.04 million in building approvals, while Truganina came in at 16th with an annual population growth rate of 8 per cent and $328.17 million in building approvals.

rate and $475.47 million in building approvals, was ranked 19th. Mickleham-Yuroke, in Melbourne’s north, is the number one hotspot with a 32.8 per cent annual population growth rate and $412.09 million in building approvals.

HIA executive director Fiona Nield said Victoria dominated the latest HIA list, with 11 of the national growth hotspots located in the state, including Wollert, Melton South, Grovedale (near Geelong), Alfredton (near Ballarat), Cranbourne East and Cranbourne West.“The majority of the growth is in the fringe of Melbourne as the city expands,” Ms

Nield said.

“Significant infrastructure investment has occurred in this region to accommodate strong population growth in Victoria for several years.

“Mickleham – Yuroke has been a regular in the national top 20 building hotspots list over the past couple of years, along with second on the list, Rockbank – Mount Cottrell.”

Ms Nield said that COVID-19 had led to a halt to overseas migration, and a number of Melbourne residents moving to regional areas, which means Victoria might not dominate future HIA hotspot lists.

Connecting new mums A Wyndham council program for young and soon-to-be mothers is helping create social connections and provide support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Bump, Baby and Beyond program is offered to expectant and new mums up to the age of 25 years who live, work or study in Wyndham. Chelsea, whose daughter Isla was born the day before the February pandemic lockdown began, has been participating in the program for about two months.

She said the group, which meets weekly through an online platform and in-person when permitted, has made her feel less isolated.

“I have made friends and I am feeling much more connected than I did before I attended the group,” she said. “It’s great to have a local supportive group with young people that are experiencing life similar to me.

“Connecting with others is really important and has improved my confidence especially in

social situations.”

Jamaica Barrientos, a youth development officer with the Wyndham council’s Youth Services Team, facilitates the Bump, Baby and Beyond program. Ms Barrientos said the pandemic has had a major effect on everyone, with many people facing challenges that can be stressful and overwhelming.

“To the people that are really struggling I would just say that you are not alone, that there is help out there and I encourage you to reach out to someone,” she said. “If you are struggling to cope speak to your local GP.” For assistance contact Kids Helpline: 18000 55 1800 or Lifeline Australia: 13 11 14.

A stitch in time The Wyndham Patchworkers Inc, will host its 25th Anniversary Quilt In later this year.

The event will feature well-known quilter Veronique Diligent as guest speaker, a raffle, door prizes, morning and afternoon tea, a show-and-tell and local traders.

Wyndham Patchworkers president Donna Morris said that after making a donation to St James the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoppers Crossing, where the Quilt In is to be held, excess profits from the event will be donated to Uniting Wyndham.

The patchworking group has a strong history of supporting community causes including the Red Cross, Werribee Hospital Foundation and Anglicare through donations of quilts, other items and funds.

“Some of our ladies don’t have much, they live on a small pension or in social housing, but their spirit of generosity is quite incredible,” Ms Morris said.

Ms Morris said some members, who are “ferocious knitters”, also donate clothing such as beanies, scarves and gloves to Werribee Mercy Hospital for chemotherapy patients.

Wyndham council has received a planning permit seeking permission to carry out $3.2 million of building and works associated with a swim school in Manor Lakes. If approved, the construction of the swim school will occur at 485 Ballan Road. Construction jobs boost

Bottle shop plan opposed

By Alesha Capone Werribee residents are battling a proposal to build a bottle shop near their houses.

A planning application has been lodged with Wyndham council for a $2.2 million development on vacant land at 18-20 and part of 22 Princess Highway, near Wattle Avenue.

The application is scheduled for a compulsory conference at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on July 22 because it has not been dealt with by council since being

lodged in December.

Brian Gosney, who lives in a court close to Wattle Avenue, said that he and other residents are planning to contest the application at VCAT. Mr Gosney said residents were worried about the potential for “drinking, loutish behaviour and litter” as a result of the bottle shop.

He said the recent upgrade of the Wattle Street intersection had led to a lot more drivers using the road, and putting in a liquor store “will only create more traffic”.

He also cited an article published by Star Weekly last week which highlighted concerns about people drinking at a park in Vincent Crescent.

“We don’t need any more alcohol-related problems in Werribee,” Mr Gosney said.

Mr Gosney said there were already several bottle shops located in the vicinity of the Princes Highway and Wattle Avenue intersection, including one store just two blocks away.

Star Weekly contacted the applicant, Princes Wattle Pty Ltd’s, lawyers, for comment.

A $147 million plan to expand a Truganina cold storage facility will result in about 200 jobs being created during the construction process.

Global logistics company NewCold Australia is expanding its Asia Pacific headquarters in Agar Drive to more than double its size, boosting storage capacity to 225,000 pallets.

The state government has provided funding support to the expansion project, but the amount is classified as commercial-in-confidence.

About 200 jobs will be created during the NewCold building project and up to 50 permanent new jobs once the expansion has been completed.

Stage one of the NewCold upgrade is already under way.

Already boasting one of the world’s largest automated high-bay warehouses, the facility will use the latest energy-efficient storage, cooling and distribution technology to automatically move and store products and ensure they are kept in optimal conditions.

The expanded facility, scheduled to be operational in 2022, will provide storage solutions to NewCold’s global food supply chain customers including Simplot, which supplies products to Australia’s leading supermarkets.

NewCold founder and chief executive Bram Hage said: “As we expand our global presence, we support local communities to foster economic growth and create high-quality employment opportunities.”

Trees make way for intersection

By Alesha Capone Community members are ‘shattered’ by the loss of several mature trees along Ballan Road, cut down to make way for a new intersection.

Local resident Jennifer captured an image of the hewn trees lying along Ballan Road earlier this month and posted it on the Manor Lakes Community Facebook page.

“I was shattered when I saw they were being pulled down,” Jennifer told Star Weekly.

“My kids love those trees, it was beautiful driving along there.”

Karen wrote: “What a tragedy. Those trees added needed character to the area” and Ash added: “I drove past while they were chopping them down, and my heart broke a little”.

Wyndham council’s director of city design and liveability, Ludo Campbell-Reid, said the tree removal from Ballan Road’s north side was part of interim works ahead of construction of an intersection at the corner of Ballan and Ison roads.

“The intersection is being constructed to provide safe access for residents of Manor Lakes and Jubilee estates,” Mr Campbell-Reid.

“This intersection will be signalised and lit, providing a safe pedestrian and cyclist crossing

point at Ballan Road and Ison Road. The works are expected to be completed in early 2022.

“As with all new projects, there will be new native trees planted along Ballan Road and Ison Road at locations which will allow future duplication of Ballan Road.”

Mr Campbell-Reid said the council was “working hard” to substantially increase Wyndham’s tree canopy coverage.

“Unfortunately, there are times when some trees need to be removed for major works, however for each tree removed, we plant hundreds in its place,” he said.

“That’s why we’re planting approximately 21,500 trees, shrubs and plants this year.”

‘Handbook’ for life Friends Ayesha Dharmabandu and Maree Gatt have collaborated on a book that aims to help people navigate life’s struggles.

Gatt, of Yarraville, and Dharmabandu, from Hoppers Crossing, said it felt “absolutely amazing” to see Shades of Being published.

Dharmabandu, who is a visual arts, photography and English teacher at Baden Powell College in Tarneit, created 50 illustrations for the book.

Gatt, a psychologist, said Shades of Being initially began as a collection of thoughts she wrote down across the years to potentially give to her own children as “a handbook on several issues they may face in life”.

Two dollars from the sale of every book will go to The Australian Childhood Foundation.

“Supporting this charity was also a huge motivation,” Gatt said.

Shades of Being is the first book for both Gatt and Dharmabandu.

Dharmabandu said it was “very surreal” to see her name on the book’s cover.

The artist, who is also president of the RedWest Creative Co-op for artists and creatives in Melbourne’s west, said she dedicated “many, many hours of work” to the book in between teaching and volunteer work.

“Illustrating the book has given me passion and drive to want to illustrate more, and now I am expanding my artist career and have since illustrated labels for wellbeing merchandise.”

Shades of Being will be launched at C&H Gallery in Hoppers Crossing at 6.30pm on Friday, July 9.

It was a fitting farewell as Werribee said goodbye to one of its favourite sons earlier this month.

Councillors, local business people and former customers of Mario Pepi stood along Watton Street and raised a coffee cup in his honour as his funeral procession passed down the street.

Mario’s son Adam Pepi said his dad, who spent 45 years working at menswear shops in Werribee’s CBD, was known to many locals for standing on Watton Street with a cigarette and coffee, as he chatted to people passing by.

Adam said that because COVID-19 restrictions limited the number of people who could attend Mario’s funeral, many lined Watton Street to say their goodbyes.

Former Wyndham mayor Shane Bourke, who conducted Mario’s funeral, also posted a tribute to him on Facebook.

Mario was remembered as a “Werribee legend”, “a true gentleman” and a “wonderful, kind man”.

Mario, aged 70, passed away from brain cancer.

Adam said his father started working at Rushfords in 1974, and later worked at Jaycees, Streetscene, Limelight and Sires.

“He was a very, very hard worker, he hardly ever took a day off – he just loved what he did,” Adam said.

“People from all walks of life, it didn’t matter who you were, struggling or a high-flyer, he made everyone feel welcome and at ease.

“Everyone has said he was very generous, always looked after his customers and always had a smile on his face.”

Adam said his father’s stores were communal places, where many would pop in to say hello

Call for lockdown rethink

Young advocate honoured Teenager Joann Manoj Jacob, who is passionate about social justice and equality, is the recipient of this month’s One Wyndham award.

The Wyndham council award recognises residents aged between 12 and 25 who positively contribute to the community.

Joann said she was surprised and honoured to receive the award.

The 14-year-old last year won the year 7-9 division of the Parliament Prize competition, which invites students to submit a statement to Parliament that they would make if they were an MP. Joann submitted a video speech about the challenges faced by indigenous Australians.

“I chose to speak about racism, as that topic is very important to me,” Joann said.

She also won a first and second prize for her poetry in the Imagination Creation Writing Competition, run by Wyndham council and Western Union Writers.

At age 13, she had a comedic article about her pet dog published in Reader’s Digest and has received a Julia Gillard Award for her commitment to civics and citizenship.

Joann said she would potentially like to study law and enter politics in the future.

“I think it is really important for more voices for women and people of colour to be heard in politics,” she said

Postcode-specific restrictions should be considered as an alternative to future statewide COVID-19 lockdowns, according to the Victorian members of the Committees for Cities and Regions (CFCR).

The CFCR is a group of not-for-profit, member-based organisations, which represents business, not-for-profit, education, health and community organisations.

The Committee for Wyndham (C4W) is a member of the CFCR, along with committees in Geelong, Melbourne and Ballarat.

The CFCR last week issued a statement calling for a “more nuanced response” to managing COVID outbreaks, including doing away with the metro-regional divide when it comes to lockdowns, introducing postcode-specific restrictions and “clear guidance to give Victorian industry confidence”.

“We need to start planning for the long term as we learn to live with this virus and potentially face ongoing bio-security threats,” the statement said.

C4W chief executive Barbara McLure said the unpredictability of government decision-making contributed “to the general unease in the community about unforeseeable restrictions that could be imposed at any time”.

“We need to protect the Wyndham/ Victorian/Melbourne brand, that Wyndham continues to be a very good and supportive place to do business,” Ms McLure said.

“We don’t want businesses relocating interstate or seeking to establish interstate because of the uncertainty surrounding our lack of COVID future planning.”

“I think people want a clear and consistent approach to reopening and locking down our economy,” she said.

From couch to marathon Michael Goldsworthy’s advice to anyone who wants to take up running is to simply get up off the coach, do it for yourself and don’t set expectations at first.

The Wyndham Vale resident, who took up running less than 12 months ago, is set to participate in his first marathon later this year.

Mr Goldsworthy, 49, said he started running in September last year, because he wanted an activity he could do without wearing a mask and, conveniently, a wetlands is located right outside his house.

“The track I ran on is just outside my front door,” he said.

Mr Goldsworthy said that at first, he set no goals, and gradually worked his way from completing one lap of the wetlands to two, then three.

“Now I run 25 kilometres a week,” he said.

“Some days are better than others, sometimes it is mentally challenging, other days it’s just great.”

Since taking up running, Mr Goldsworthy has taken part in a 10-kilometre run at Werribee Mansion and a 14-kilometre run along the Great Ocean Road, which he described as “brilliant”.

He is now preparing for the Nike Melbourne Marathon on October 10.

Lotus Living, the developer behind the Jubilee estate, is sponsoring his marathon efforts and will donate funds to the Starlight Children’s Foundation on his behalf.

Mr Goldsworthy, who also coaches Werribee Centrals under-14 girls’ and senior women’s teams, said running helped him remain fit.

Roads concern for focus groups

By Alesha Capone Roads and public transport are among the top topics Wyndham residents want council to focus on in the future, according to an upgraded community vision.

The council last week voted to adopt a “refreshed” version of the Wyndham 2040 Community Vision document.

First developed in 2016, the vision came about after public consultation to identify what the wider community wants Wyndham to be like in coming decades, touching on categories including parks, education, the arts, tourism and local roads projects.

to “refresh” the vision in November last year, including a survey which received more than 1000 responses.

The council also randomly selected 135 community representatives who were put into five separate groups, based on where they lived, to come up with a list of priorities.

The Werribee and Hoppers Crossing group listed roadworks to ease congestion, improving

infrastructure and creating “more frequent and active transport options” as its first priority.

The Point Cook, Williams Landing, Laverton and Laverton North group listed ensuring sustainable community building, providing 20-minute neighbourhoods, safe pedestrian and public transport access and community facilities as its top priority.

The Little River, Werribee South, Mambourin, Cocoroc, Quandong, Eynesbury and parts of Mount Cottrell group voted improving public and active transport, including walking and cycling paths, as itsnumber one concern.

demand – as its main focus.

Residents from Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes and Werribee’s west said improving infrastructure planning and delivery, such as emergency access, roads, telecommunications and public transport, was a priority.

Other areas of concern included improving public open spaces, the environment, police stations, local employment opportunities, mental health, business support and homelessness.

Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the refreshed vision “details the community’s desire for a safe, connected and inclusive community that has the infrastructure and services it needs to support the growing population”.

Werribee resident Naw Jacqueline Aungminn says she loves volunteering to help others, especially youth and senior citizens.

Ms Aungminn, who was born in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, came to Australia as a refugee about six years ago.

She is well-known within the international Karen community for her work at the Mae La refugee camp in Thailand.

Ms Aungminn said she did not like talking about her past, but she had a “hard life” in Myanmar from early 1977 to December, 1989.

She recalls learning how to avoid landmines and how to escape from the military.

“Most people don’t want to be a refugee, we never dreamed about it – but when an unexpected situation arises, you become a refugee,” she said.

Ms Aungminn arrived in the Mae La refugee camp in January, 1990 and lived in a tent with her family, moving 19 times over the next 25 years.

Ms Aungminn, a qualified teacher, enlisted as a Medicine San Frontiers volunteer and worked along the Thai-Burma border, engaging the community on the topic of malaria elimination on behalf of the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit.

Ms Aungminn and a friend later founded the Karen HIV/AIDS Education Working Group, to raise awareness about the illness among people living in the Mae La camp.

In 2005, Ms Aungminn began working as a HIV/AIDS program officer in the Mae La, Umpiem and Nupoe refugee camps, a role she held for 10 years before coming to Australia.

Since arriving in Australia, Ms Aungminn has completed a Settlement Language Pathway to Employment Training Course through AMES Australia Werribee and worked at the Western English Language School as a multicultural education aide.

For the past three years, she has volunteered as an English tutor with MiCare, an aged care and community services organisation.

She is also cultural advisor for community practice on COVID-19 at MiCare and secretary of the Western Karen Elder Group.

“It’s important for me to work as a volunteer in any kinds of ways I can,” she said.

Family says thanks

By Alesha Capone Melanie Smiley says she cannot thank the Cancer Council Victoria enough for its support after her husband was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer more than a decade ago.

Medical teams were unable to diagnose what type of cancer Tim had, and he was told he only had two years to live.

Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) occurs when the disease is found in one or more secondary sites in the body but it remains unclear where it started.

Tim’s cancer metastasized to his lymph nodes and was found in his cartoid and saliva glands.

Melanie said she was unsure where to turn for support following Tim’s diagnosis, until friends gave her some Cancer Council brochures.

“For me, the Cancer Council was amazing – the first thing I did was call the helpline,” she said.

“I don’t know what I would have done without it.”

She said the council also offered support for children, financial support if needed, and volunteers would drive Tim to his medical appointments if she was unable to.

Melanie said that surgeons who operated on Tim, who is still alive, dubbed him the “Miracle Man”.

Melanie joined Relay for Life in 2010 as a way of giving back to the Cancer Council.

She is now treasurer of the Wyndham Relay For Life.

The 2020 event would have been the family’s 10th year of participating but the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.

gala dinner which was planned for May, due to pandemic restrictions. It will now be held in August – pending restrictions.

Melanie said the Wyndham Relay For Life usually attracted thousands of participants and raised between $200,000 to $300,000 per year.

“This year we really, really want to make it bigger and better, show that we are still here – cancer doesn’t stop,” she said.

Drivers fail to heed warnings Police detected 114 traffic offences in Wyndham during the recent Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

A total of 4780 traffic offences and 431 criminal offences were recorded across the state as part of the four-day Operation Regal.

Within Wyndham, police issued 50 speeding tickets and detected 16 unregistered vehicles.

Officers also detected 10 seatbelt offences, seven disqualified drivers and seven motorists who disobeyed road signs and signals.

Six unlicensed drivers, five drink drivers and two drug drivers were also detected.

Five drivers were caught committing mobile phone offences and six vehicles were impounded.

Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said a 56-year-old male passenger died as a result of a fatal collision with a vehicle attempting to overtake in Moorooduc.

“While this is the lowest number of fatalities seen over a Queen’s Birthday weekend since 2017, one life lost on our roads is still too many,” she said.

“Whether speed, distraction, disobeying road rules, not wearing a seatbelt, fatigue or impairment from alcohol or drugs is at play, road trauma can be avoided” “We cannot be complacent when driving.”

Scanner helps stroke diagnosis A new CT scanner which conducts high-level brain perfusion imaging used to diagnose acute strokes has been installed at Werribee Mercy Hospital.

Patients attending the hospital’s emergency department, intensive care unit and acute medical and surgical services will be among the first to access the new scanner, which was shipped from Germany and installed earlier this month.

The scanner is now in its final stages of testing and will be available for use within weeks.

Werribee Mercy’s current CT scanner will continue to operate but will be decommissioned by mid-2022.

Mercy Health’s health services chief executive Jason Payne said the new scanner would help to identify serious health issues in patients.

He said while Werribee Mercy does not provide long-term treatment of stroke patients, the scanner will assist in rapid diagnosis of their conditions.

Mr Payne said that Mercy Health was in regular contact with the state government to highlight the need for investment and expansion at Werribee Mercy.

“As the major public hospital in one of Australia’s fastest-growing urban corridors, demand for our services has continued to escalate,” he said.

Bike boost for police Wyndham council has donated two off-road motorbikes for Victoria Police officers to use while patrolling off-road areas and parklands frequented by illegal trail bike riders.

Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the council has been providing Westgate Highway Patrol with off-road motorbikes since 2017.

The latest donations would replace older model motorbikes.

“Wyndham city enjoys a strong relationship with Victoria Police, and we are continually working to find ways in which we can assist them to do their job,” Cr Hegedich said.

“Providing these bikes is one way council can assist and also keep our residents safe.”

Wyndham’s community safety portfolio holder Cr Susan McIntyre, welcomed the donation.

“Illegal trail bike riding puts the safety of our residents at risk,” Cr McIntyre said. “There is no excuse for someone to use our parks and

reserves for illegal riding of motorcycles or other illegal activities.

“With school holidays around the corner, we need our residents to feel safe and be able to play and use our parks and pathways safely – without the threat of illegal trail bikes.”

Westgate Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Leemara Fairgrieve said that police did act on information they received from the public about illegal trail bike riding.

“We want our parklands, footpaths and bike tracks to be safe. We won’t tolerate this sort of behaviour.”

As an essential service, Active Audiology remained open during COVID-19 but, as owner and principal audiologist Cris Ivanidis says, some patients neglected their hearing aid use or hearing issues because they weren’t interacting in person with others.

Cris says that the isolation and inability to engage socially impacted on everyone’s mental wellbeing.

“For those with hearing loss, this impact was felt even more deeply. Their only means of social communication via phone or Zoom was made even more difficult,” he explains.

“They weren’t able to rely on the visual cues you’d normally have in person. We found those with a hearing loss were even more isolated from their everyday activities and sounds.”

Audiologist Mey Chakouf had a client last year, for example, who found lockdown very isolating, affecting his hearing and use of hearing aids.

“Mr C from Hobson Bay loves to golf and used this as his regular catch-up with friends.

His hearing aids were part of his ability to socialise and feel confident. During lockdown, he barely wore his hearing aids because he didn’t feel the need to,” Mey says.

“This led to his hearing getting worse.

Within weeks, he was turning up the TV and starting shouting again because his brain had readjusted. When we saw Mr C, we explained how important it is to keep wearing hearing aids even when you’re alone because they keep the hearing pathways active in his brain.”

Another client, Mr T, knew in 2019 that he had a hearing loss and needed to do something about it. But he neglected it in lockdown last year.

“He worked from home and relied on his headphones when using the computer for Zoom meetings,” Mey says.

Bold and the beautiful

AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE

The first thing anyone commented about when they saw this week’s road test SUV – the Genesis GV80 – was its size: “It’s big isn’t it?”.

Though it’s almost five metres long and two metres wide, which is large but not exceptionally so, it’s shaped to look bigger than it really is. Bigger is better is often a sales incentive in the SUV field.

Styling Bold is the first word that comes to mind. The front is totally dominated by a huge grille with headlight housings that seem to be a couple of sizes wider than they need to be.

The rear lights follow the style of the fronts and the tail has a bold centre section. The roof slopes sleekly to the rear and the side windows sweep upwards to give a streamlined look.

Interior

It almost goes without saying that the GV80 has been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Inside the bold look continues, but it has a good combination of upmarket class at the same time. Our test Genesis had a luxury package that includes quilted Nappa leather. It had suede on the pillars and dash as well as timber trim on the centre console.

There’s space for three adults in the centre row seat, though it’s shaped for two individual seats, with the one in the middle being for occasional use only. The two outer rear seats can be adjusted electrically in the manner that we normally only associate with front seats.

Given the size of the vehicle there’s less legroom than you would expect. Getting into the third row of seats isn’t easy because of the height of the vehicle off the ground. Again, there’s not as much legroom as we would like.

There appears to be too much emphasis on boot space, which is positively cavernous.

Perhaps it’s the sweeping style at the rear that has the third-row seats rather limited for headroom.

Comfort is very good as the car’s Road Preview Electronic Control Suspension has a forward camera that looks at the road ahead for potholes or bumps.

It then quickly adjusts the suspension damping according to what it sees.

Handling is pretty good for a vehicle of this size and mass though obviously it’s not aimed at the driver who wants to toss it at bends. You can choose to use a Sport setting but if you feel that way inclined, but we wonder how many owners would do this.

Summing up Genesis GV80 is a large SUV positively stacked with many features and is sold for tens of thousands of dollars less than European SUVs in this class.

SPORT Tennis club aims to build on recent success The Williams Landing Tennis Club (WLTC) is hoping to repeat its autumn success in the upcoming spring season.

The club’s Men’s B grade (section 3) team won the finals of the Western Suburbs Night Tennis Group (WSNTG) earlier this month.

The club was also named as overall championship winners for autumn 2021.

Section 3 captain Senthil Raj Anbalagan said the WLTC – which formed in mid-2018 – at first struggled to put forward a team for the autumn competition.

“We had a rough start, we lost the first two nights and we were last in the ladder,” he said.

“But I knew my team is capable of playing way better than last place.

“I believed my team can definitely challenge and be successful in a competitive western region competition.”

Anbalagan said after two losses, he made sure the team practiced at least once or twice a week,

to help hone their formations and understand each other’s game in the doubles competition.

“Guess what, after the two nights we never lost a single Tuesday night,” he said.

“Every week we won, we moved up the ladder.

“At the end of season we played the top team [Yarraville] and we were second on the ladder, we beat them four sets to two sets.”

WLTC ended up on top of the ladder with 38 points to Yarraville’s 36 points.

“We played as a team and respected each other and played with high competitive spirits,” Anbalagan said.

“That got us over the line, I believe.”

WLTC has registered to play in the WSNTG spring competition, which is set to start on July 20.

Anbalagan said he was hoping that WLTC could “be competitive and reach the same heights” for the spring season.

“We have managed to put two teams for

next season which is amazing and a personal achievement for me as a competitions officer,” he said.

“This shows the club is growing and the victory has brought us together as a club.”

Star is smashing goals

By Peter Howe Bridgette de la Mere was destined to pursue a sport. She tried swimming, netball, football, athletics and many more, all of which challenged her.

The talented teen would settle on hockey as a 10-year-old at Corpus Christi Primary School in Kingsville.

“I chose hockey when we had a hockey player come to school and showed us how to play,” she said.

“I loved the challenge of mastering the basic skills required to play, my friends all played and I wanted to hang out with them.” de la Mere loves a challenge and is a deep thinker about her sport. Just talking to her, you can hear the passion she has for hockey.

“I play as a striker/midfielder. My role is to get the ball into the ‘D’ to help us score.

“I also need to work hard in defence to help our defensive transition. I have to know where our opposition sets up to give us the best chance to score.”

At 14, de la Mere made Footscray Hockey Club’s premier women’s team.

“I was amazed at how fit the players were, their amazing skill level,” she said.

“All of the players in the team welcomed my selection and got around me, it took me a while to get the hang of it and then my confidence grew.

“I am challenged every time I run onto the field.” de la Mere was selected in her first Victorian state team when she was 13 and hasn’t been out of it since.

She recently competed at the under-18 national championships, with Victoria finishing second.

For de la Mere, it’s about getting the processes right, not the outcome.

“Playing at the highest level is an opportunity to test yourself against the best sportspeople in the country and enjoy yourself doing what you love.

“I have a very positive mindset. I am very comfortable in the moment and don’t explode, I have a very clear picture of what is required at any moment because we have trained it.

“I train two nights a week at Footscray where we work on match simulation, skills and drills.

“State training is another two and sometimes three sessions a week where we work on game set up, match simulation and penalty corner strategy.”

Her maturity has seen her develop a team-first approach. She’s also a volunteer coach and umpire for the younger players at her club.

younger players,” she said.

“I work to gain their trust so we can accept feedback and work together to improve. It’s how our club works.”

She was named the female junior club champion in 2019 for her work at the club.

Much of de la Mere’s fitness and strength work is undertaken at her school, Maribyrnong Secondary College, where she is in the Sports Academy.

Her time in the gym is spent on weightlifting and resistance training, other testing includes the beep test and Yo Yo test. de la Mere has also achieved success at indoor hockey, where she has represented Victoria.

The 16-year-old has eyes on the future and a long career in hockey.

“I’d love to play for Australia,” she said.

“It’s a long process. My aim is to make the emerging squad that consists of players 18 and over to train for the Melbourne team. Then Australia is a possibility.

“If I don’t make it so, be it. I love my sport and will always play it right up to the masters.” de la Mere is the June winner of the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club’s Don Deeble Sports Star Award.

Big win for Vikings Altona continued on its merry way as the Western Region Football League division 1 season resumed on Saturday.

After three weeks off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, senior and junior footballers were keen to return to the field.

In division 1, ladder leaders Altona had a big win against Point Cook.

The Vikings had 13 scoring shots to nil in the first quarter to exert their dominance from the first siren.

That would continue throughout, with the Vikings winning, 20.18 (138)-4.5 (29). Mitchell Van Den Berg kicked five goals in the win, while Spencer Johnson was named best on ground.

Sunshine recorded its first win of the season, getting over the line in a thriller against Yarraville Seddon Eagles.

There were no more than two goals separating the teams at each of the breaks. Neither team would score in the final quarter, with Sunshine sneaking home with a 10.11 (71)-10.7 (67) win.

Jake Allan was the best for Sunshine, while Archi Manton was the leading goal kicker, snagging four for Yarraville Seddon.

The win means Sunshine moves off the bottom of the ladder.

It was a tough day out for Spotswood against Hoppers Crossing, with the Warriors winning 12.14 (86)-7.6 (48).

Brenton Payne continued his strong form up forward for the Warriors, kicking four goals. Liam McMahon was named best on ground.

Josh Drage was Spotswood’s best.

Deer Park got a crucial win against Caroline Springs in the race for finals. After trailing by one point at quarter-time, the Lions hit the front in the second quarter.

They would sit two to three goals in front for the rest of the game. The Lions won 12.8 (80)-9.10 (64).

Lions Aaron Britten was named best on ground.

In the other match, Werribee Districts defeated St Albans for a second time.

Werribee led 36 to one at the first break and that would prove to be the defining quarter of the match.

Werribee won 15.12 (102)-10.11 (71).

Werribee’s successful return to the field

By Tara Murray Werribee overcame some early rust to make it four wins in a row in the Victorian Football League.

Having not played since May 23 and with only a week back on the track after a COVID-19 lockdown, Werribee was expecting a tough start against Greater Western Sydney.

It proved to be the case with Werribee trailing at quarter-time. It picked up the momentum after the break and was never headed in the 15.8 (98)-7.8 (50) win.

Werribee skipper Michael Sodomaco said the game felt more like the opening round of the season, than a midseason fixture.

“We just tried to liken it to round one a bit,” he said.

“There was that energy and enthusiasm, and a few cobwebs with match pressure and skills, and then heavy legs 10 minutes in [like] you get in round one. Basically that’s what it was.

“We scrapped it out in the first quarter and stuck with them, then found our feet in the second quarter. It was a really good, positive day.

“First week back you want to take the win. It was one of those danger games with some obstacles that you don’t often face.”

For Werribee coach Michael Barlow it was about stripping it back to basics in the second quarter to get the game on their terms.

“We had four or five weeks off away from footy with a disjointed lead-up,” Barlow said.

“I applaud the boys for coming back in good condition, though the first quarter showed a month off with some rust around the ball.

“We were expecting and understanding of that.

“For the boys to fight back into it after half-time was terrific.

“Sods [Sodomaco] was really vociferous in his opinion that we had been there before and wholesale changes weren’t needed.

“They are such a coachable group. From that point, we just stripped it back to the basics … Going back to the contest and trying to win the contest.”

While happy with the win, Barlow said there were still some things to improve on, including the last kick inside 50.

Barlow said Tom Gribble led the way in the second half.

He said Matthew Lobbe in the ruck was strong and rewarded with a goal late when he was sent forward.

Shaun Mannagh, who kicked three goals, Jack Henderson who spent more time in the midfield and Joe Maishman, who had the job on Tanner Bruhn, were the other standouts.

While the players were back on the ground, supporters had to watch from home with no crowds allowed.

Barlow said it gave a different feeling to what they are used to at Avalon Airport Oval.

“To our supporters, members, board

members, who make Avalon Oval a special place, we really missed you today. It didn’t have the same feel of a VFL match.”

Werribee this week faces North Melbourne which has won its past two matches. Barlow said they would have their work cut out for them to make it five on the trot.

It will be a big day for Werribee with Tom Gribble playing his 100th VFL match and Dom Brew playing his 50th game for the club.
