A documentary about Footscray icon Franco Cozzo is likely to be screened in Yarraville as part of the 69th Melbourne International Film Festival in August.

For the first time, the festival will expand from the CBD into five suburban cinemas, including Yarraville’s Sun Theatre.

Which films are showing at the Sun won’t be known until the festival’s full program is revealed on July 13 but odds are on Madeleine Martiniello’s Palazzo Di Cozzo.

It tells the story of Cozzo’s rise as Melbourne’s furniture king after he arrived in Melbourne from Italy in 1956 as a 21-year-old.

The documentary shows how Cozzo also became a cult figure, famous for sales pitches such as: “Grand sale! Grand sale! Grand sale!

Where? In Brunswick and Footscray.”

A record 11 titles will make their Australian debuts at the festival, including Leah Purcell’s The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson.

The revisionist outback western is the festival’s first opening night film from a female Indigenous director.

This year’s festival is a hybrid event across cinema and digital, from August 5-22.

Rate rise ‘lacks empathy’

By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council’s draft 2021-22 budget has been described as lacking empathy towards ratepayers because of a proposed rate rise of “3.5 per cent in real terms”.

Ratepayers Victoria (RV) has made a formal objection to this year’s proposed 1.5 per cent increase on top of the 2 per cent rebate it said the council proposed to recover from last year.

Victoria’s ratepayers advocacy group joined nearly 30 individuals who made a written submission opposing rate rises.

RV president Dean Hurlston stated: “We believe this budget does not respond to the

current economic climate, does not represent value for money, does not make responsible economic decisions and lacks empathy for Hobsons Bay residents and business … still trying to recover from 2020 COVID impacts”.

Mr Hurlston also addressed councillors in a verbal presentation.

“Every dollar matters to your community and like every other major company in the world, it’s time that you did the hard work – that’s what you’re elected for,” he said.

“Hobsons Bay has assets well over $1.35 billion so, respectfully, don’t believe council officers when they start telling you you need to penny-pinch.”

In a written submission, Ruth Cronin stated the proposed rate rise was out of step with the impact of the pandemic, which was still being felt.

“The timing of the proposed rate increase is appalling and has failed to acknowledge or appreciate the struggle of its constituents,” she stated.

Simon Kingston stated the rate rise was unnecessary when people were still in COVID recovery and faced with closure of the ExxonMobil refinery and Qenos plastics plant.

“As a long-term ratepayer of 30-plus years in the same residence, my rates have increased nearly tenfold,” he wrote.

“This is far out of proportion with wages

growth and is reducing people’s ability to pay their other bills.”

“Your social conscience must be mindful and this increase in the rates cannot be justified at this time.”

Karen Kennedy stated the council’s hardship policy was “just a deferral payment plan with no discounts, no compassion and no logic”.

Bradley Gillman stated the increase was “an absolute kick in the face by an out-of-touch council”.

Councillors are set to make a decision on the budget on June 29.

Budget focus on COVID recovery

By Goya Dmytryshchak Maribyrnong council has adopted its 2021-22 budget and revenue and rating plan, which includes an average 1.5 per cent rate rise and more than $56 million in capital works.

The municipal charge has decreased from $30 to $20 and the COVID-19 financial hardship policy extended until June 30, 2022.

Revenue from general rates and charges will be $100,686,259.

Cr Bernadette Thomas told last week’s council meeting that COVID-19 recovery was

high on the agenda.

“This budget is attempting to meet the needs of our growing community for our residents and businesses, and also to recognise that there are still ongoing impacts of the COVID pandemic across our community,” she said.

“Recovery of our residential community, but also our local economy, is really high on our agenda and we want to continue, of course, to deliver the high-quality services and improvements to our facilities that are important to our community.”

Waste management charges are $198 for two bins and $222 for three bins. Eligible pensioners will receive a rebate of up to $201.30.

A vacant residential land rebate may be granted upon application for 50 per cent of the rate, provided the certificate of occupancy is issued within 18 months of the completed building demolition.

The mayoral allowance is $81,204 and councillor allowance at $26,245 plus an amount equivalent to the superannuation guaranteed contribution for the 2020-24 council term.

An insta-worthy neighbourhood Yarraville has been named the 19th most Instagrammable neighbourhood in the world.

An analysis carried out by the UK-based Stokemont surveying practice has revealed the number of hashtags the world’s most Instagram-worthy cities and neighbourhoods received.

The list started out by compiling popular neighbourhoods based on sources such as Complex, Time Out and Forbes, before Instagram data was analysed.

Yarraville received 236,000 hashtags, slotting behind San Francisco’s Lombard Street at 285,000 and ahead of Old Havana in Cuba at

204,000, according to the analysis.

The top three locations were Wynwood in Miami with 3.8 million hashtags, Shinjuku in Tokyo with 2.7 million and New York with 1.9 million.

Stokemont property surveyor Bradley Mackenzie said Yarraville was one of the nation’s tourism hotspots.

“Australia as a whole is a large and growing market in terms of tourism,” he said.

“In 2019-2020, domestic visitor expenditure hit almost 80 billion Australian dollars.

“In the research stage for this study, we came across several desirable neighbourhoods,

including Yarraville. It became apparent that it’s one of Australia’s tourism hotspots, with popular landmarks such as the Sun Theatre and the Yarraville Village Farmers Market.”

Last October, Yarraville made global magazine Time Out’s list of the 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world.

It was one of only two Australian suburbs to crack the top 40 ranking, coming in at No. 13.

In March, Sun Theatre made Time Out’s list of the 50 most beautiful cinemas in the world, ranked No. 44.

Less than half the Hobsons Bay ratepayers who applied for a rates waiver have received one this financial year to date.

Ninety-eight ratepayers have applied for a waiver, the council told Star Weekly last week.

The council has granted 46 waivers to 17 residents and 29 businesses.

Two applications are still being decided pending documentation.

Seventeen ratepayers on JobSeeker applied for a waiver and all were granted.

Hobsons Bay ratepayers who received JobSeeker payments may be entitled to a $200 waiver on their 2020-21 rates notice.

To be eligible, the property must be residential and the ratepayer’s principal place of residence.

To apply, residents need to provide evidence of being a JobSeeker (Health Care Card or Pension Card marked with JS) in the 2020-21 financial year.

Councillors Diana Grima and Daria Kellander have taken to social media to alert resident ratepayers on JobSeeker they could be eligible for a waiver.

One Facebook user responded: “Thank you. If your post was not on Facebook, I and others would not have known about this. I actually received an email yesterday from the council advising I am entitled and have received a $200 credit on my next rates notice.”

Maribyrnong council does not provide rates waivers.

Feedback sought on outdoor dining Maribyrnong council is seeking community feedback on plans to extend and expand outdoor dining established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The council is looking to extend until April the outdoor dining program it introduced last year to help bars, restaurants and cafes survive.

Forty-seven parklets (parking bays re-purposed for tables and chairs) popped up across suburbs including West Footscray and Yarraville.

A pop-up park in Ballarat Street at Yarraville and a laneway in Yewers Street at

Footscray were also opened up to diners.

If the community supports an extension, a $250,000 state government grant could be used to maintain existing outdoor dining areas and install more in the Footscray CBD near Footscray station, Nicholson Street Mall and the West Footscray Indian Quarter.

The program initially started as a six-month trial in November after the council received $500,000 government funding.

Mayor Michael Clarke urged people to fill out a council survey.

“The outdoor dining program has given our

community an opportunity to support our local traders while enjoying great food with good friends in a COVIDSafe way,” he said.

“It has also brought our community together when restrictions have lifted – each time.

“I encourage everyone to complete the survey as now is the time to confirm if there is sufficient demand to extend and even potentially expand the program to more outlets.”

Bar embraces Bitcoin

By Goya Dmytryshchak A community-owned bar in Footscray is attracting notice for accepting bitcoin, as cryptocurrency becomes more mainstream.

Even the Western Bulldogs’ current AFL guernsey features the logo of cryptocurrency exchange CoinSpot, the country’s largest platform to buy digital currencies.

One bitcoin equals AU$41,947.65 as at Tuesday. Bitcoin was invented by anonymous entity Satoshi Nakamoto in 2007, and there can only ever be 21 million in circulation.

Pride of our Footscray community bar has had about 25 patrons buy beer with bitcoin in the past two and a half years.

Licensee or chief bar officer Mat O’Keefe said the venue’s acceptance of bitcoin and a giant bitcoin mural had attracted interest.

Melbourne Bitcoin Only holds regular meet-ups at the bar, while gender-diverse rapper Robbie P used the mural as a backdrop for their Bitcoin Slang music video.

The mural features Footscray furniture icon Franco Cozzo and Footscray Market, and a giant pink moon with a Bitcoin logo.

“It’s because bitcoin people always joke, ‘bitcoin is going to the moon’, as in it’s going to be really valuable,” Mr O’Keefe said.

No longer a joke, not only has the value of bitcoin skyrocketed, BitMEX crypto exchange this month announced it would put one bitcoin

on the moon.”

Mr O’Keefe said people rarely spent bitcoin now and if anyone does, the bar will hang onto it.

“It’s the digital equivalent of gold,” he said.

“There’ll only ever be 21 million bitcoins released and there’s 7.8 billion people in the world, so everyone in the world can only own a fraction of a bitcoin because they’re so scarce.

“The Western Bulldogs … have now got a bitcoin exchange company on the back of their jumper. It’s got bitcoin out of a niche … football is the most mainstream thing in Australia.”

The Bulldogs’ sponsorship deal marks the first time a cryptocurrency exchange has become a premier partner with a major Australian sports team.

Breaches of family violence orders remains one of the most frequent crimes in Hobsons Bay. Overall, crimes recorded for the year to March dropped 3.3 per cent in Hobsons Bay and 5.7 per cent in Maribyrnong, the latest Crime Statistics Agency data shows.

There were 5853 offences recorded in Hobsons Bay and 8848 in Maribyrnong.

Stealing from a motor vehicle was Hobsons Bay’s most common crime (693), followed by other theft (572), public health and safety offences (510), breaching family violence orders (459) and criminal damage (365).

Altona North had the most crimes (1003), followed by Altona Meadows (982), Williamstown (932), Altona (789) and Laverton (564).

Most crimes happened in houses (1544), streets, lanes and footpaths (1286), driveways and carports (249), flats, units and apartments (243), and service stations (214).

Maribyrnong’s top five offences were stealing from a motor vehicle (1380), other theft (693), public health and safety crimes (653), obtaining benefit by deception (559) and criminal damage (559).

The worst suburbs for crime were Footscray (2676), Braybrook (1645), Maribyrnong (1377), Maidstone (982) and Yarraville (860).

Most crimes happened in streets, lanes and on footpaths (2277), followed by houses (1581), flats, units and apartments (608), shopping complexes (375) and driveways and carports (366).

Earlier this year I joined in a community bike ride from the farmer’s market in Tottenham to Footscray Community Arts Centre. At the end of the ride I shared a story with the crowd about my first bike – a beautiful gold Malvern Star ‘girls’ bike, which I rode until I left home at age 18. I even took it to university with me and continued to ride it there.

By the time I returned to live in Sydney after a period overseas I had stopped riding and did not start again until I moved to Melbourne about 15 years later.

Now I ride as often as I can – to work (combined with a train ride), to the library, the shops, the movies … to most places in fact where I would otherwise take the car.

Sometimes I ride for fun, and I get a lot of pleasure from riding my bike, but I don’t always feel safe, which is the key to getting people of all ages and genders riding their bikes more often.

Council’s Bicycle Strategy 2020-2030 includes a range of projects designed to facilitate bike riding across Maribyrnong by creating safe riding environments for all riders.

It’s a long-term plan to improve bike facilities, including bike hoops, bike repair stations, separated bike lanes, reduced traffic speed and traffic calming measures.

Council has responded to the call with an additional $1 million in the 2021-22 budget for a range of bike projects, setting a new record spend of $1.9 million specifically for bike infrastructure. This includes separated bike lanes in French Street and Barkly Street outside of Footscray High School, a number of priority crossings, bicycle trail lighting and a mountain bike track feasibility study.

During COVID lockdowns in 2020, more people took up bike riding in Maribyrnong – for exercise, for fun and as a mode of local transport. The provision of more on-road infrastructure will ensure this trend continues with even more of us riding more often.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Quang Dang, 33, wanted on warrants for failing to appear at court for charges of recklessly cause injury and contravening a court order. Dang is known to frequent the Laverton area.

Accident inspires debut novel

By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown author has told of the tragic inspiration behind his debut fictional book.

Campbell Mattinson spent more than 20 years writing We Were Not Men, whose storyline was sparked by the death of a young local football hero Ron James.

Twins Craig and Ron James, aged 14, started out together in the Williamstown Football Club thirds in 1985 after transferring from West Newport juniors. Ron would be sensationally selected to make his debut in the senior grand final team later in the year.

He was killed in a water-skiing accident on the Murray River at age 19.

“Ron James played for Williamstown and then went to play for Footscray, and so he was an AFL footballer on the cusp of being a star when he died,“ Mattinson said.

“It was his tragic death that caused the initial outpouring and beginning of the story.

“Subsequent to me revealing recently that that had inspired the initial creation of this story, I heard somebody say, ‘no Williamstown person worth their salt will ever forget where they were when they heard that he died’.

“I’m kind of amazed that people still talk like that 30 years later, even though I still talk like that. It’s not easily explained and yet that death just hit people so hard.”

We Were Not Men is a fictional tale about twin boys Jon and Eden Hardacre who spend their whole lives on the river and swimming in the Williamstown and Newport area, and they have tragedy in their lives.

“You can see how I springboarded straight off that story, but I’m not trying to tell the story of the James twins,” Mattinson said.

“There was an initial outpouring after the death [of Ron] and in less than a year, maybe

even in less than nine months, I had a finished novel that was big in size – 150,000-plus words.

“I was at the stage where I’d done the final printout and had the envelope and was about to mail it to publishers and I just did one last

read through … and I just didn’t feel like [the fictional twins’] grandmother [Bobbie] was strong enough. I thought that was a quick fix … and it turned out I was never happy with the story for a long time. It really did take more

than 20 years for me to start being happy that I was capturing that character and I was hearing that character talk and be a rounded character rather than just a character who served the boys.”

Social housing refusal appealed

By Goya Dmytryshchak Unison Housing has appealed to the state’s planning tribunal to overturn Maribyrnong council’s refusal to allow affordable/social housing at a Seddon site.

It has lodged an appeal in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in a bid to convert the use of student accommodation at 69-79 Buckley Street.

Its planning application received 21 objections from 14 properties while a petition

by Seddon resident Sally Thompson gained 119 signatures supporting the plan.

The council last month refused the application on several grounds including

“unacceptably high concentration of social and affordable housing in the area” and “adverse amenity impacts to surrounding properties”.

During public question time at last week’s council meeting, Ms Thompson said there were significant grounds to appeal the council’s decision.

“The apartments at 69-79 Buckley Street, Seddon, are close to transport and services,” her question began.

“Their use as affordable and social housing by the not-for-profit housing provider, Unison Housing, was recommended by council officers and is supported by the state Housing Minister Richard Wynne and by our local federal member Tim Watts.

“It is supported by 119 residents who have signed a petition tabled with council.

“There are significant grounds to appeal council’s decision at VCAT. “How much ratepayers’ money is the council willing to spend defending their misguided decision to block this popular proposal?”

Maribyrnong mayor Michael Clarke replied

that officers would prepare a submission to VCAT presenting council’s case.

“The decision as to whether legal representation will be sought will be determined as officers prepare that case.”

Cr Clarke said onsite supervision and reception were vital for the accommodation.

“I’m surprised, and I say very surprised, that in spite of offering a way forward to Unison they’ve at this stage of the game elected not to take up our options to give them a way forward,” he said. “… It’s not this council that’s not open, it’s Unison that are not open to a way forward, and we do have a way forward.”

Unison was contacted for comment.

From carpark to park The Raleigh Street carpark has been converted into the Raleigh Street Pop-up Park.

Footscray’s newest place to play has a synthetic turf, basketball half-court, scooter/ skate track and ramp, perimeter walking/ jogging track and exercise equipment. A ping-pong table is expected to be added next month.

There are active and quiet zones, with picnic settings and lounging and seating throughout.

The pop-up is part of Maribyrnong council’s response to COVID-19, aimed at helping the community socially distance while spending time outdoors.

It was built after the council late last year called for community feedback on its plan for the site.

The park will be in place for 12 months,

during which time the council will monitor its use.

Community feedback will again be sought after the trial.

By Goya Dmytryshchak Newport’s Chris Reidy has been honoured for his excellence as manager of the Victorian Seniors Festival, which last year became an online six-month event and reached into aged care facilities for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was recognised with a Public Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Since 2008, Mr Reidy has expanded what was once a city-based week of events into a month-long festival with events in all 79 Victorian local government areas.

He said a decision was made last March to deliver the 2020 festival differently.

“We realised a lot of older people, particularly those in their 60s and 70s, are pretty savvy online and would enjoy getting access to interesting programming,” he said.

“But we also realised there’s a whole lot of older people who get up in the morning and turn their radio on, not their computer. So, we decided to do a two-pronged [approach].

“We did 107 video programs.

“We decided to combine performances with interviews, so we recorded over Zoom and we helped people in their own home – performers

and others – record. We also, at the same time, did 60 radio programs.”

Mr Reidy said the festival program included radio plays, music specials and spoken word material, which was sent to aged care facilities.

“Starting from scratch, we built up a strong relationship with close to 100 aged care facilities,” he said. “We’re still working on this relationship – every year it’s going to build.”

Fifty aged care residents were interviewed about their life stories as part of the festival.

“Everybody in an aged care facility is living a life and they all have a story to tell,” Mr Reidy said.

Midsummer celebration People are being invited to Finland’s biggest summer celebration being held in Altona this month.

Midsummer or Juhannus, which is held under varying names in many other countries, is a mix of pagan and religious traditions.

Originally a pagan celebration in tribute to the god of thunder, Ukko, it is also a celebration of Saint John or ‘Juhannus’ in Finnish.

The Finnish Society of Melbourne is hosting lunch by a roaring symbolic “bonfire” at its Finnish Hall in Pier Street.

President Jori Tossavainen said the celebration also marked the summer solstice.

“In Finland and Europe, they celebrate Juhannus,” he said. “It’s usually between 19th and 26th of June, which is when there is the longest day in the northern hemisphere.”

Members of the broader community are being invited to join the celebrations.

Altona resident Jeffery McDougall, who has taken up Finnish folk dancing despite not having Finnish background, said he was looking forward to Midsummer.

“I only knew about the Finnish community because of my housemate,” he said.

“He just told me, ‘you like coffee so go to the hall’. The Finnish coffee is just great and I never really left.”

Juhannus/Midsummer is planned for Sunday, June 27 from 1.15pm, provided COVID-19 restrictions allow.

By Tara Murray A program which pairs volunteers with local families for weekly visits is launching in Melbourne’s north-west.

Baptcare’s Home-Start has been running in Australia since 1989 and started in Victoria 12 years ago in Bendigo.

It’s now expanding to Brimbank, Wyndham, Melton, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley.

Home-Start co-ordinator Danielle Lucas said the program aimed to provide support to families in a way that they may not otherwise get.

“It’s about someone coming and having a coffee and a catch-up each week,” she said. “It might be going to a playgroup with them or going for a walk.

“Having the volunteer come fills a gap

for a lot of people. It’s like having a mother, sister, friend or aunt come along to chat and provide mentoring.”

Ms Lucas said the organisation matches volunteers with families who are already part of their other programs.

She said many of these families may not have English as a first language, which can affect their confidence.

All families involved must have at least one child under the age of five.

Ms Lucas said they were starting to get the word out about the program, including at maternal health facilities, libraries and kinders.

She said they were looking for volunteers to become part of the program, which consists of visits once a week for one to two hours.

“We’re looking for volunteers who have some type of caregiving experience from a wide range of backgrounds and ages.

“They could be mothers or sisters, or people who have retired and want to be involved in the community.”

All volunteers participate in an eight-week training program, with ongoing training provided.

Werribee resident Naw Jacqueline Aungminn says she loves volunteering to help others, especially youth and senior citizens.

Ms Aungminn, who was born in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, came to Australia as a refugee about six years ago.

She is well-known within the international Karen community for her work at the Mae La refugee camp in Thailand.

Ms Aungminn said she did not like talking about her past, but she had a “hard life” in Myanmar from early 1977 to December, 1989.

She recalls learning how to avoid landmines and how to escape from the military.

“Most people don’t want to be a refugee, we never dreamed about it – but when an unexpected situation arises, you become a refugee,” she said.

Ms Aungminn arrived in the Mae La refugee camp in January, 1990 and lived in a tent with her family, moving 19 times over the next 25 years.

Ms Aungminn, a qualified teacher, enlisted as a Medicine San Frontiers volunteer and worked along the Thai-Burma border, engaging the community on the topic of malaria elimination on behalf of the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit.

Ms Aungminn and a friend later founded the Karen HIV/AIDS Education Working Group, to raise awareness about the illness among people living in the Mae La camp.

In 2005, Ms Aungminn began working as a HIV/AIDS program officer in the Mae La, Umpiem and Nupoe refugee camps, a role she held for 10 years before coming to Australia.

Since arriving in Australia, Ms Aungminn has completed a Settlement Language Pathway to Employment Training Course through AMES Australia Werribee and worked at the Western English Language School as a multicultural education aide.

For the past three years, she has volunteered as an English tutor with MiCare, an aged care and community services organisation.

She is also cultural advisor for community practice on COVID-19 at MiCare and secretary of the Western Karen Elder Group.

“It’s important for me to work as a volunteer in any kinds of ways I can,” she said.

MY PLACE Williamstown Toastmasters Club member Fiona Price recently won the District 73 Table Topic Contest and placed second in International Speech Contest. The Williamstown resident spoke with Goya Dmytryshchak.

What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? My father was born and raised in Hobsons Bay, and I moved here in 2007 and haven’t looked back. I joined Williamstown Toastmasters in 2014, have been a panellist at two Homegrown Hobsons Bay events, and wrote a song for the Newport Community Choir called Flyway (a version of the Frank Sinatra classic, My Way) to perform at World Migratory Bird Day in 2019.

What do you like about Williamstown?

I love that Williamstown has a seaside village atmosphere yet is only 20 minutes from the city. Being able to swim in, or walk by, the coast every day was something I really appreciated last year during the lockdowns.

What’s your favourite local cafe or restaurant?

The local restaurant I visit most is Tina’s Dumpling House. I’ve been secretly wishing there was a local source of dumplings for years and was delighted when Tina moved in.

How does Toastmasters help with public speaking?

What would you change or what could be improved?

The roundabout where Millers Road and Kororoit Creek Road intersect can be a traffic bottleneck during peak hour. It would be good to address this perhaps by replacing the roundabout with traffic lights. I love the bushland that was created at Newport Lakes.

It would be great to expand the little patch of forest in the Altona Coastal Park in the same way.

The thing about Toastmasters is, it enables you to practice regularly.

Can anyone become a good public speaker?

I think just about anyone can be a better speaker. Anyone could probably be a good speaker. I think a lot of it has to do with what you’re speaking about and what context you’re speaking in.

What did you speak about at the recent contest?

The international speech is meant to be more serious or inspiring or motivational and in the international competition you have to actually write a prepared speech and deliver it from memory.

The speech I wrote was about the importance of learning how to show vulnerability as a way

of making close connections with people.

As a story which I used to support that, I talked about my trip to South Africa when I went to meet a penfriend – I wrote to someone in South Africa from the age of about 15 or 16.

Through him, I met his best friend who’s a blind poet.

In the speech, I recount the story of how the blind poet taught me about vulnerability.

Champion for women A Williamstown woman who has received an Australia Day honour for significant service to women with ovarian cancer has recalled her own diagnosis, which brought heartbreak but also gratitude.

Paula Benson, who formerly chaired Ovarian Cancer Australia, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.

“She sent me straight off that morning for a transvaginal ultrasound and she got me in to see a gynaecological oncologist that night and I had the surgery the next week.

“No one thought that I would have ovarian cancer because I was young, I was 34 – largely, it’s women in their 50s, 60s, 70s who are diagnosed – and I have no history of ovarian or breast cancer in my family.

“So, no one suspected that it could be ovarian cancer; they could see that I had a large cyst attached to one of my ovaries and that the ovary was damaged and that the cyst and the ovary would need to be removed.

“When I woke up, my gyne-oncologist told me that she was very sorry but she’d found ovarian cancer and had to undertake a radical hysterectomy.

“It was very shocking for a young woman to have that experience but I know my cancer was diagnosed early, it hadn’t spread and I know how lucky I am.”

Ms Benson said she knew her story was not typical for most women with ovarian cancer, which prompted her to offer her services to Ovarian Cancer Australia in 2006.

“I do have a beautiful daughter,” Ms Benson said. “She’s 14 now.

“I was very fortunate. One of my girlfriends donated eggs and another girlfriend carried her for me, so I’m very lucky to be a mum.”

On learning of her Australia Day recognition, Ms Benson said she hoped it would raise more awareness of ovarian cancer.

“When I first found out about it I felt quite

emotional really thinking about everything that we at Ovarian Cancer Australia have achieved over the past decade,” she said.

“But I was just reflecting today, the same week that I found out about potentially receiving the award, I heard about another friend of mine who’s just been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer and it was very grounding.

“We’ve achieved so much, we’ve done so much and I’m so proud of that but there is still so much more to do and we can’t rest until it’s

done.”

Ovarian Cancer Australia said under Ms Benson’s stewardship the organisation had achieved significant milestones, including developing and implementing Australia’s first national action plan for ovarian cancer research, securing $3 million federal funding for the Traceback ovarian cancer prevention program and the commitment of $20 million for ovarian cancer research from the federal government’s Medical Research Future Fund.

Nature’s classroom The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation is on a growth spurt with no end in sight. Established in 2004 to educate and engage children in healthy eating habits by one of Australia’s best known cooks and food writer Stephanie Alexander, the foundation now supports just under 1700 gardens and there are no signs of slowing down writes Jan Fisher.

oint Cook P-9 College got in on the action early on. Plans for a kitchen garden were included in the original design when the school opened in 2010. From a greenfield site 11 years ago it now has 13 garden beds, an orchard, a chicken run, greenhouse, aquaponics, olive trees throughout the campus and there are plans to build an indigenous food garden.

Like all the foundation gardens, it’s not just about growing plants. At Point Cook, students in the year 3-4 cohort have a weekly garden class but the garden also supports learning across the school.

- Robyn Cairns “The garden provides opportunities for hands-on learning that no other place in the school does,” says the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation (SAKGF) co-ordinator and environmental science teacher Robyn Cairns.

“The garden is accessed by classroom teachers and specialist teachers for linked learning experiences and is an integral part of our schools new Hands on Learning program.

“Sarah Moore, our garden specialist teacher, educates students on garden skills and sustainable gardening in both the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, the Hands On learning program and runs a weekly garden club.

“The children enjoy the SAKG garden for it is a place of sensory exploration, a quiet refuge for many and a place to be fully emerged in nature.”

The school uses the garden to link to literacy and numeracy planning in inquiry units, photography and science and the school is redesigning the singage to include not only the plants’ common names but also their Latin and

Indonesian names as part of their language studies. Ms Moore said it’s also been a haven for students in these confusing pandemic times.

“It’s a place to calm down, have a break, or a reward for completing their work,” she said.

SAKGF support and delivery manager Josie Charles said while the model has been tweaked over the years, enthusiasm for the school gardens has never wavered.

Originally a funded program where schools had to raise a considerable amount of money to install a garden and kitchen, it now runs along a more affordable membership model.

“It’s evolved to growing your program over time and achieving what you want to achieve in your school and we provide the resources,” Ms Charles said.

Schools can start off slow with as little as a few garden beds or take on the whole shebang with a full garden and kitchen.

“Each school is very different and what they want to achieve can vary from a whole school or just a few year levels running with the program, or starting with a garden and progress to kitchen,” Ms Charles said.

“Some schools use it as a connection into the broader community, volunteers come in and help with the program and can provide some amazing experiences.”

Point Cook College is no exception and it plans to restart its community garden club once COVID-19 restrictions ease.

“There is often a lot of interaction with local business and often very passionate program

members and at some schools local hospitality groups are involved with the program as well,” Ms Charles said.

“We encourage schools to start small and grow their garden. A garden is ultimately never finished.

“The outdoor learning space really allows for another string to the bow and is particularly hands-on.

“It’s about pleasure and engaging the senses with hands-on education. While they are doing that they are also learning about science and maths and the full range of education can be linked back to the garden.

“It can also be a powerful space for kids not engaged in the classroom, it gives them a chance to shine.”

As an essential service, Active Audiology remained open during COVID-19 but, as owner and principal audiologist Cris Ivanidis says, some patients neglected their hearing aid use or hearing issues because they weren’t interacting in person with others.

Cris says that the isolation and inability to engage socially impacted on everyone’s mental wellbeing.

“For those with hearing loss, this impact was felt even more deeply. Their only means of social communication via phone or Zoom was made even more difficult,” he explains.

“They weren’t able to rely on the visual cues you’d normally have in person. We found those with a hearing loss were even more isolated from their everyday activities and sounds.”

Audiologist Mey Chakouf had a client last year, for example, who found lockdown very isolating, affecting his hearing and use of hearing aids.

“Mr C from Hobson Bay loves to golf and used this as his regular catch-up with friends.

His hearing aids were part of his ability to socialise and feel confident. During lockdown, he barely wore his hearing aids because he didn’t feel the need to,” Mey says.

“This led to his hearing getting worse.

Within weeks, he was turning up the TV and starting shouting again because his brain had readjusted. When we saw Mr C, we explained how important it is to keep wearing hearing aids even when you’re alone because they keep the hearing pathways active in his brain.”

Another client, Mr T, knew in 2019 that he had a hearing loss and needed to do something about it. But he neglected it in lockdown last year.

“He worked from home and relied on his headphones when using the computer for Zoom meetings,” Mey says.

St Aloysius: An architect of change Students and staff are gearing up for a major change at St Aloysius College in North Melbourne when the all-girls school goes co-educational, starting in 2023.

Principal Mary Farah says the move to co-ed is eagerly embraced by the students, staff and wider community.

“We will welcome our first cohort of year 7 boys in 2023, with a new group enrolled each year at year 7 level until 2028, when we will become fully co-ed,” she says. “The girls already enrolled at the school will remain in single-sex classes until graduation, which will ameliorate any disruption caused by the transition.”

Ms Farah says the significant [and very welcome] change is being rolled out with great attention to detail, with all the pluses and pitfalls experienced by schools in a similar position well researched and considered.

“Many of our teachers have taught boys before and are very familiar with the differences in approach. All teachers will be very well resourced to make the transition smooth, including workshops and ongoing learning.

“Everyone’s very excited.”

The school, with more than 50 different nationalities represented and 134 years of Mercy tradition, is well-known for putting out the welcome mat “for everyone”.

This year’s theme at the school is “hospitality”, one of the six Mercy Education values alongside service, compassion, justice, respect and courage. Students forge strong links with their community, discovering ways to demonstrate hospitality, while also learning about social justice and helping fundraise for charities and organisations.

Nissan Pulsar 2013 - 2018

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Nissan Pulsar was a big seller in Australia from its introduction way back in 1980. It was called Nissan Tiida from 2006 until 2012, then Pulsar again until 2018 when it fell victim to the SUV craze and was discontinued.

During these missing years several quality cars were introduced and Pulsar didn’t manage to regain its major place on the market.

Another factor for its reduced sales number was the increasing buyer interest in SUVs as these were no longer 4WDs but rather practical family machines. Nissan had been a strong player in 4WDs / SUVs for decades with Patrol, Qashqai, X-Trail and Juke, and the Pulsar lost sales to them.

Initially only Pulsar four-door sedans were imported, a five-door hatch arrived six months later. Model range is Nissan ST, ST-L, ST-S and Ti, as well as the sporty SSS. Pulsar’s rear-seat legroom is good and they can carry two adults in reasonable comfort, three with less of a squeeze than you might expect. The boot is very good in the hatch and positively cavernous in the sedan.

Long distance cruising on Australian country roads had always been a feature of Nissan Pulsars and the new model of 2013 continued that tradition.

A stiff body structure not only offer good crash protection, but also minimises vibration.

Mechanical and road noise have been isolated by extensive use of sound absorbing materials.

A 1.8-litre engine is used in the standard models, with the topline Ti and SSS getting a 1.6-litre turbocharged unit.

The six-speed manual gearbox didn’t sell particularly well, most buyers opt for an Xtronic continuously variable transmission. Naturally there are more manuals in the sporty SSS.

The CVT has an interesting feature Nissan calls Smooth Start Assist. This irons out any accelerator pressure imperfections caused by the driver, or rough roads thus giving a smooth and fuel-efficient drive.

Safety systems include front, side and curtains; ABS brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist; traction control and vehicle dynamic control.

There are more Nissan dealers in country and remote areas than is usual in this class as big brother Nissan Patrol is popular in the bush.

Servicing and spare parts prices are about average for this class. Not all spares for Pulsars are stocked in remoter areas of Australia but can generally be delivered within a few days of being needed.

Nissan Pulsars are often owned by conservative drivers, with the possible exception of the sporty SSS, so insurance rates tend to be lower than average. Shop around for the best quote, be sure that you’re comparing

BMW’s top-billing coupe

AT A GLANCE

In the circus that is modern car design, the BMW 4 Series Coupe could well be cast as the clown, complete with a ‘red nose’ and big boots.

The maker says it has conceived the new Coupe to stand on its own two feet away from its 4 Series cousins.

And to say the BMW M440i xDrive does is an understatement, with a flashy front end that refuses to be ignored. And this is not only reflected in its controversial appearance. In dimensions, too, the new model shifts further away from the model it replaces – length to 4770 mm, wheelbase 2851 mm, width 1852 mm and height 1393 mm.

The M440i is the halo car of the range, with the 420i Coupe opening the account at $70,900, plus on-road costs, followed by the 430i Coupe, $88,900 and the M440i xDrive, $116,900, the test car, taking top spot.

The specialist BMW M tag is taken up by a standard Sports package incorporating extra-large air intakes at the front and highly contoured apron up the back, while Cerium Grey accents further set the BMW M440i xDrive apart.

Underneath is an M Sport suspension, 19-inch M light alloy wheels, knee pads on the side of the centre console and other interior elements specially designed for the car. An M Carbon exterior package can also be optioned.

Infotainment Styling At first glance, the BMW M440i xDrive front is to automotive design what the bull-nose roof is to architecture. There’s a pugilist’s flattened schnoz with wide nostrils to sniff up masses of cooling air with the shutters open at full fire.

The vertical ‘kidneys’ in the centre hark back to the company’s past, with such legends as the BMW 328 and 3.0 CSi with modern touches.

The slim LED headlights, with high beam assist, take up the front of the wheel arches.

Behind the bonnet, the car reverts to the sharper sleek lines we expect of a wind-cheating coupe, with curved surfaces, short overhangs, slim pillars long doors and frameless windows.

A sleek roofline, and muscular shoulders accentuate a powerful stance and darkened LED rear lights with constantly lit light bars sign off the sporty character of the flagship 4 Series coupe.

A built-in SIM card with 4G connectivity and BMW Connected Package Professional hook into digital services, including the maker’s TeleService, and Intelligent Emergency Call, real time traffic info with hazard warning, Remote and Concierge services.

A fully digital instrument display has enough space to take in a section of the navigation map, driver assistance info, or 3-D view of the surrounding area. A standard head-up windscreen display backs this up with important driver information.

Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is on hand, while vehicle software updates are remote over ‘the air’.

Engines / transmissions Two four-cylinder engines, putting out 135 kW / 300 Nm and 190 kW / 400 Nm, respectively, power the 420i and 430i. The M440i xDrive use

of a six-cylinder motor upping the output to 285 kW / 500 Nm. All three powerplants are mated with a slick-shifting eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission, with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

Safety The BMW M440i xDrive has a full suite of the latest active and passive safety features, including Parking Assistant Plus with surround, top and side view.

It also boasts a wide range of driver assistance aids mentioned elsewhere in this report.

Driving Two doors and four seats; there’s the first hurdle. The contoured front seats and low roof conspire to cut the door frame to a vertically challenging opening, while the seat backs fold only so far, making the entrance and exit of passengers far from elegant.

When settled in, things improve out of sight for all four occupants. The driver is faced with a pretty standard selection of sports car ‘stuff’, which is no hardship. Instruments and control display is extensive and easy to work with, while the start / stop button has been shifted to the control panel of the centre console. The 4 Series Coupe does offer an optional remote engine start feature.

The front seat passenger can take advantage of a large storage space and extra cup holder, and the pair in back, limited head room apart, enjoy ample comfort, topped off by an acoustic glass windscreen, for the longer journey. The tighter roof lines have also cut the boot capacity by 5 litres to 440L. The twin turbo ‘six’ and eight-speed auto tranny punch the BMW 440i xDrive from rest to 100 kilometres per hour in a sharp 4.5 seconds. But that’s only half the story, for the sports coupe is the epitome of well-bred driving manners and fuel economy.

For example, the test vehicle clocked fuel consumption of 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres in the urban environment and just 6.4 litres per 100 when let free on the open road.

The standard M Sort suspension incorporates specially tuned dampers, while buyers can opt for the Adaptive M suspension with electrically controlled dampers.

While the brakes are sharp, they don’t grab me. However, I suppose pulling up a 1.8 tonne flier calls for high-end operation. In stop-start city stuff they can be a little challenging for lovers of a smooth ride.

Standard LED headlamps on the crack Coupe throw a new light on night-time driving. The BMW Laserlight system features adaptive cornering and variable illumination that increases high-beam range to more than 500 metres and follows the course of the road at speeds above 60 km/h.

Summary If you can draw the curtains on the opening scene, the M440i xDrive frontal design; or maybe this unconventional ‘overture’ is music to your ears, the rest of the car is straight out of the classical sports coupe repertoire, bum notes – getting in and out, for example – and all.

Young star is smashing goals

By Peter Howe Bridgette de la Mere was destined to pursue a sport. She tried swimming, netball, football, athletics and many more, all of which challenged her.

The talented teen would settle on hockey as a 10-year-old at Corpus Christi Primary School in Kingsville.

“I chose hockey when we had a hockey player come to school and showed us how to play,” she said.

“I loved the challenge of mastering the basic skills required to play, my friends all played and I wanted to hang out with them.” de la Mere loves a challenge and is a deep thinker about her sport. Just talking to her, you can hear the passion she has for hockey.

“I play as a striker/midfielder. My role is to get the ball into the ‘D’ to help us score.

“I also need to work hard in defence to help our defensive transition. I have to know where our opposition sets up to give us the best chance to score.”

At 14, de la Mere made Footscray Hockey Club’s premier women’s team.

“I was amazed at how fit the players were, their amazing skill level,” she said.

“All of the players in the team welcomed my selection and got around me, it took me a while to get the hang of it and then my confidence grew.

“I am challenged every time I run onto the field.” de la Mere was selected in her first Victorian state team when she was 13 and hasn’t been out of it since.

She recently competed at the under-18 national championships, with Victoria finishing second.

“Playing at the highest level is an opportunity to test yourself against the best sportspeople in the country and enjoy yourself doing what you love.

“I have a very positive mindset. I am very comfortable in the moment and don’t explode,

I have a very clear picture of what is required at any moment because we have trained it.

“I train two nights a week at Footscray where we work on match simulation, skills and drills.

“State training is another two and sometimes three sessions a week where we work on game set up, match simulation and penalty

corner strategy.”

Her maturity has seen her develop a team-first approach. She’s also a volunteer coach and umpire for the younger players at her club.

“I am young and can identify with our younger players,” she said.

“I work to gain their trust so we can accept feedback and work together to improve. It’s how our club works.”

She was named the female junior club champion in 2019 for her work at the club.

Much of de la Mere’s fitness and strength work is undertaken at her school, Maribyrnong Secondary College, where she is in the Sports Academy.

Her time in the gym is spent on weightlifting and resistance training, other testing includes the beep test and Yo Yo test. de la Mere has also achieved success at indoor hockey, where she has represented Victoria.

The 16-year-old has eyes on the future and a long career in hockey.

“I’d love to play for Australia,” she said.

“It’s a long process. My aim is to make the emerging squad that consists of players 18 and over to train for the Melbourne team. Then Australia is a possibility.

“If I don’t make it so, be it. I love my sport and will always play it right up to the masters.” de la Mere is the June winner of the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club’s Don Deeble Sports Star Award.

Her award is sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, Strathmore Community Bank and the Deer Park Club.

By Shaun Campbell An astute split-second decision by driver Josh Duggan has helped star trotter Sleepee add to her impressive Group race record in the Woodlands Stud Noopy Kiosk Trotters Free For All at Tabcorp Park Melton.

The Alison Alford-trained mare sprinted home to edge out favourite Cover Of Darkness in the Group 3 feature in one of several nail-biting finishes on Saturday night.

Sleepee led briefly in the race’s early stages before Cover of Darkness pressed to the front, giving the five-year-old a cosy run in her first race since April 8.

Duggan told Trots Vision she was travelling well around the home turn and he was “in two minds” on whether to bring her out or wait for the sprint lane.

His mind wound back to Cover Of Darkness’s first-up win at Melton on May 29 – and that tipped his hand. “[Cover Of Darkness] wanted to get up the track a lot in the straight and didn’t trot that well last [time], so I opted to stay and wait,” he said.

“That’s … why we opted to take the trail.

[Cover Of Darkness] doesn’t really trot the straights as well as he does the corners and, our horse being first-up, we had to try and look after her at the same stage.

“She was just going off one trial at Bacchus Marsh last week where she came off the second row and just followed them around.

“Tonight we thought she just needed the run as there’s a mares race (Group 2 IRT Australia Matriarch Trot for 4&5YO mares) coming up next week … so we didn’t want to cook her first-up.”

The win, in a 1:56.1 mile rate, was the ultra-consistent mare’s 13th in 26 starts – of which she’s been unplaced just three times – and took her career earnings to just shy of $200,000.

Her record in elite Group races is just as impressive – three wins, three seconds and three thirds from 10 starts.

“She’s pretty versatile; she can do it tough and she can do it sit-sprint style,” Duggan said.

“Tonight I was a little bit worried as in the

warm-up every time I got to the gate she’d stop and want to walk and carry on, which is not like her as usually she’s normally on her toes.

“But tonight she was really quick up the straight.”

Sleepee’s win was one of several close finishes during the night, with Arocknatthepark (who won by a neck for trainer and driver Tony Calabria), Illawong Stardust (short half-head for trainer Tony Peacock and driver Brian Gath), Jimmy The Irishman (half neck for trainer Adam Kelly and driver Zac Phillips) and Mister Fortunia NZ (head for Andy and Kate Gath) also saluting in edge-of-the-seat fashion.

Cover Of Darkness may have just missed, but his trainer Emma Stewart was still able to score a double with Rockasaki in the Allied Express Blossom Lady and Struve in the Alabar Pace.

SPORT Altona Hockey pleads for funds

By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona Hockey Club is calling on Hobsons Bay council to allocate $265,000 in its next budget to complete a design phase for a new facility.

In a budget submission, president Alex Tyrrell said the club was seeking to redevelop its pavilion.

“We acknowledge the impact the global pandemic has had on all levels of government and the difficult role local governments have to remain financially responsible but still service the communities needs,” he said.

“However, we believe we have a strong case for a project which will greatly benefit the local Hobsons Bay community.

“The current Altona Hockey Club pavilion at JK Grant Reserve was built in two stages with the initial pavilion built in 1968 and the social space added in 1981, which was the last major

upgrade to the pavilion. We are the sole hockey club in Hobsons Bay and have competed continuously in the highest level of hockey in Victoria since the 1970s.

“Due to the age of the building it impacts our ability to attract and retain members, as well as adding additional work on a volunteer membership to maintain the building.”

Tyrrell said the kitchen, which had a club-funded major upgrade 15 years ago, did not meet all aspects of the council’s food handling audits. He said the facilities for females were inadequate.

“We have long been an equal gender participation club but our women’s change rooms have been in a portable for many years now and storage remains an issue as we continue to use an old and leaky shipping container for storage needs,” Tyrrell said.

Tyrrell said the club had money to contribute

to the project. “We currently have $55,000 for the pavilion redevelopment project in a sinking fund, ready to contribute to the project of the full redevelopment.

“Over the past 17 years, we have continued to contribute heavily to capital works and facility development, to a total of over $400,000.

“The $265,000 requested to be included in the 2021-22 annual budget to complete a design phase for the facility upgrade is based on information from council officers on draft capital works budgets.

“The budget figure could be reduced if the available Altona Hockey Club funds ($55,000) could be used for the design phase, and we would hope to be followed by the amounts for the full redevelopment in 2022-23 ($700,000) and 2023-24 ($1.3million).”

The council is expected to adopt its final 2021-22 budget at a meeting on June 29.

Big win for Vikings

Eynesbury 12-year-old Ruby Gorton has been selected to represent Victoria in the under-12s squad at the national championships in August. (Supplied)

National competition beckons Ruby Gorton is fast making her name as a jewel in the local hockey crown.

The Eynesbury 12-year-old’s blistering form with Footscray Hockey Club has resulted in her selection to represent Victoria in the under-12s squad at the national championships in August.

Ruby’s first call-up to the squad came two years ago in 2019, where she helped Victoria claim third place, however the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the championships in 2020.

Since her first call-up she has twice achieved a runner’s up medal at the state indoor championships and been admitted to the prestigious South West Academy of Sport.

Ruby’s now ready and raring to take on the nation’s best when the championship gets under way in the ACT.

“Honestly it feels really good that I’ve got this opportunity, I’m looking forward to getting on the field again and just playing,” she said.

“I was really overjoyed that I got to play for Victoria when I got into the team two years ago when I was 10 years old, obviously I didn’t get to play last year so now I’m really looking forward to it.”

Ruby has been playing hockey since the age of four, following in the footsteps of her parents and uncle.

She said her love of the game goes back even further.

“I went to the Olympics when I was three, the 2012 games, and once I saw that I thought I really wanted to play,” she said.

“I just fell in love with the sport.”

on the pitch, with a preference to play midfield but ability to go forward as well.

“I like midfield because you get to run around a lot and it’s fun to keep the game going,” she said.

“I missed out on nearly a year of hockey, I got disappointed that I didn’t get to play that year but it feels like things are starting to brighten up.

“I’m really excited to be getting back in the team, I’ve been able to play for Footscray and that’s great – the club has really nice people and always gives me the best opportunities.”

Ruby’s love for hockey and competing at elite levels also has her eyeing off a long future in the sport.

“When I grow up I really would like to play for the Hockeyroos and go to the Olympics,” she said.

Altona continued on its merry way as the Western Region Football League division 1 season resumed on Saturday.

After three weeks off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, senior and junior footballers were keen to return to the field.

In division 1, ladder leaders Altona had a big win against Point Cook.

The Vikings had 13 scoring shots to nil in the first quarter to exert their dominance from the first siren.

That would continue throughout, with the Vikings winning, 20.18 (138)-4.5 (29). Mitchell Van Den Berg kicked five goals in the win, while Spencer Johnson was named best on ground.

Sunshine recorded its first win of the season, getting over the line in a thriller against Yarraville Seddon Eagles.

There were no more than two goals separating the teams at each of the breaks. Neither team would score in the final quarter, with Sunshine sneaking home with a 10.11 (71)-10.7 (67) win.

Jake Allan was the best for Sunshine, while Archi Manton was the leading goal kicker, snagging four for Yarraville Seddon.

The win means Sunshine moves off the bottom of the ladder.

It was a tough day out for Spotswood against Hoppers Crossing, with the Warriors winning 12.14 (86)-7.6 (48).

Brenton Payne continued his strong form up forward for the Warriors, kicking four goals. Liam McMahon was named best on ground.

Josh Drage was Spotswood’s best.

Deer Park got a crucial win against Caroline Springs in the race for finals. After trailing by one point at quarter-time, the Lions hit the front in the second quarter.

They would sit two to three goals in front for the rest of the game. The Lions won 12.8 (80)-9.10 (64).

Lions Aaron Britten was named best on ground.

In the other match, Werribee Districts defeated St Albans for a second time.

Werribee led 36 to one at the first break and that would prove to be the defining quarter of the match.

Werribee won 15.12 (102)-10.11 (71).
