A moment in history A photo of eight-year-old Zach and his dog waiting for the first visitors to arrive at their family home after a stage three COVID-19 lockdown last year tells a powerful story. Zach’s mother Cher Dooling captured the image of her son and the family’s adopted British bulldog, Daisy, on May 16, 2020. Ms Dooling has submitted the photo to a project run by Wyndham council’s libraries, to collect community stories about the effects of COVID-19 on everyday life. The stories will be preserved on the Wyndham History website and in the library’s collections for future generations. Ms Dooling said she took the picture of Zach and Daisy before the arrival of her cousin from Narre Warren, who had a baby last February. “Zach loved interacting with the three-month-old baby, holding him, feeding him, brushing his hair – something very special as we are a small family,” she said. Ms Dooling said Zach and Daisy are “inseparable”. “I daresay Daisy is the reason Zach was able to cope during lockdown,” she said. “That is the reason why I sent through the featured photo. “It tells a much bigger story about a love and friendship between a little boy and his beloved companion.” Ms Dooling encouraged other residents to make a submission to the Our Wyndham COVID-19 Stories project, either a photo, a one-minute audio recording or a 500-word letter to future generations. “This is such a unique time in history,” she said. Wyndham council is working with health organisations to establish a “high-volume” COVID-19 vaccination hub. A council spokesperson said Wyndham was working closely with Western Health, the Department of Health, GPs and other partner agencies to establish a large site where the community can be vaccinated. “This work is progressing, and we hope to have a high-volume vaccination site up and running very soon,” the spokesperson said. Separately, general practitioners from MyClinic Werribee Village conducted a trial mass vaccination clinic at the Encore Events Centre last Thursday – 107 people were vaccinated within two hours. MyClinic’s Dr Joe Garra said they were hoping to run another vaccination clinic soon. He said large sites such as Encore gave patients more space to complete the required 15 minute wait after receiving a jab, making mass clinics a “promising future model”. Plans are also shaping up for a 500-bed quarantine facility to be constructed near Avalon airport. The Prime Minister last week gave acting premier James Merlino a memorandum of understanding to confirm support for the quarantine centre, which is expected to cost about $200 million. In a Facebook post, Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw said the benefits of the facility would include job opportunities for locals. “However, Wyndham needs to work through details with authorities to ensure our residents are protected from any risk of transmission from this facility,” the post read. Meanwhile, Wyndham council has called on state and federal governments to give businesses more certainty about future lockdown support. “Business owners can’t be left guessing every time about if, when and how much support they will receive,” Cr Shaw said. “Lockdowns was an effective strategy in 2020 but 12 months on we need different strategies to deal with COVID outbreaks.” Mayor Adele Hegedich said the council was “doing everything we can to support our local economy” including a $5 million business support package and a Small Business Entrepreneurship and Innovation Fund.

Weapons operation targets Wyndham Police searched more than 140 people in Wyndham during an anti-weapons operation last month, sparked by concerns about knife crime in the area. A Victoria Police spokesperson said that Operation Tallinn was conducted with support from the Public Order Response Team, Highway Patrol, Transit Police and PSOs and aimed to “provide a highly visible presence in the area to detect and deter any anti-social or criminal behaviour”. Public areas in Wyndham, including shopping centres in Hoppers Crossing and

Manor Lakes, and three shopping centres in Tarneit, were declared “designated areas” during the operation, giving police additional search powers to detect and deter weapon offences. Other designated areas included Presidents Park, Mossfiel Reserve, Cambridge Reserve, Hoppers Crossing skatepark, Tarneit railway station and Wyndham Vale station. Police allege that two males were found to be carrying an edged weapon on May 24, after police intercepted a vehicle in Thames Boulevard, Werribee.

Cannabis, GHB, knives, a homemade firearm, ammunition and cash were allegedly found when police searched the car. A 29-year-old Werribee man was arrested and charged with several offences including possessing an unregistered handgun, possessing explosives and possessing a prohibited weapon without exemption. A 23-year-old Harkness man was also arrested. Police said he was expected to be charged on summons with similar offences. “This should send a very clear message to anyone carrying a knife – you are going to get

Resident calls for action By Alesha Capone A Manor Lakes resident fed-up with hoons speeding and doing burn-outs in local streets has called for authorities to take action. The father-of-two, who asked to remain anonymous, said he and other residents feared it was only a matter of time before an innocent bystander was killed by a speeding or out-of-control car. “The streets are covered in burn-outs and you see more marks every day after you get home from work,” he said. “If you’re sitting at home at midnight, 1am you’ll hear hoons, including in lockdown.

- Concerned resident “The people in my street are all fed-up with it, we have all got kids.” The man said one resident has already sold his Manor Lakes house due to the noise generated by hoons. He said the family living across the road from him was also considering selling up for the same reason. “We will probably do the same, we have two children and are worried it will be them who get hit by a hoon speeding,” he said. “We chose to build down here because it was nice and quiet, and now it’s falling apart.“ The man said that he has spoken to multiple residents living on Ison Road, who all say hooning has become worse during lockdown. He said the residents wanted to see a “physical presence” to help deter hoons, whether it be police, private security or a camera to catch speeding drivers. The resident said he has contacted local MPs, Wyndham council and police numerous times about the hoon issue. He had also given statements to the police. “You wonder where police and the council are,” he said.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said: “Werribee police take illegal hoon driving incidents extremely seriously. “Werribee police continue to target hoon drivers as part of Operation Achilles, the statewide response to illegal hoon driving incidents. “Local police and highway patrol are tasked

to patrol high risk areas on a regular basis to detect and deter any hoon driving activity. “Anyone with information on hoon activity is urged to make a report to their local police station or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.” Wyndham council said the issue was a matter for police and declined to comment.

Mortgage stress concern More than 14,000 Wyndham households are experiencing mortgage stress, according to figures from a research and consulting firm. Statistics from Digital Finance Analytics, released in April, showed the top 10 postcodes in the state experiencing mortgage stress, which is defined as households where people spend more than they earn every fortnight, and have to face choices such as whether to pay the mortgage or put food on the table. The 3805 postcode, which includes Fountain Gate and Narre Warren, topped the state with 8919 households in mortgage stress. The 3029 postcode (Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina) was third with 7972 households experiencing mortgage stress. Within the 3030 postcode (Werribee, Werribee South, Point Cook, Derrimut), there are 6399 cases of mortgage stress. Consumer group CHOICE released the postcode data last month, amid concerns about the federal government’s plans to repeal safe lending laws. CHOICE chief executive Alan Kirkland said the laws were put in place “to avoid the huge damage to families and communities caused by mortgage stress – by making banks take care to avoid giving people loans they won’t be able to afford to repay”. “If the government gets away with its plan to axe safe lending laws people who are desperate to get into a rising housing market will be at risk of overexposure and people who need to refinance won’t be adequately protected,” he said. A long-awaited path has opened near a retirement village in Werribee. Wyndham councillor Jennie Barrera joined members of the Heathglen Retirement Village, just before the latest snap COVID-19 lockdown, to celebrate the opening of the new path linking the retirement village with the Heathdale Glen Orden Wetlands paths network. Village residents Neil Tolliday and Sharon Myhre-Davis – who is chair of the Heathglen residents committee – have been lobbying for the path since 2018, to help people walking their dogs or using strollers to walk around the

creek. The Heathdale Glen Orden Wetlands is about 35 hectares of open space which is inhabited by several types of native flora and fauna species. The wetlands are also popular with birdwatchers, who visit to see species including willie wagtails, Pacific black ducks, white-plumed honeyeaters and yellow-rumped thornbills. Heathglen sales manager Helen Dimopoulos, Heathglen Village manager Asif Chowdhry and Wyndham council’s director of city operations Steven Thorpe all attended the official opening.

The state government will invest in two blocks of land to build new schools south of Point Cook, as part of a $276.4 million commitment in the 2021-22 Victorian budget. In state Parllament last month Altona MP Jill Hennessy said: “We know that all of our schools are full … and finding it very, very challenging to deal with the growing demand, so getting that land for the purposes of provisioning is going to be very important,” she said.

Theatre build VTAS Architecture has been appointed to design a $723,500 upgrade of Werribee Secondary College’s performing arts theatre. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the upgrade would transform the facility into a fully operational, small-scale theatre for school and community use.

Store helps community By Alesha Capone Birdcage Community Store is helping hundreds of Wyndham residents doing it tough every week. The store, based at the Wyndham Park Community Centre in Werribee, was established during the first COVID-19 lockdown last year when centre manager Greg Ferrington noticed a “big need” in the community. Birdcage volunteers collect donated food and goods from sponsors including Foodbank Australia, OzHarvest Australia and Baker’s Delight every week. The community store co-ordinator Christine Mackaness said the site was usually organised so that people could come in and choose the food and goods they wanted to take away. However, during lockdown, volunteers have been packing boxes for pick-up. Mrs Mackaness said that just before Christmas, the community store was assisting about 70 people per week. At the moment the store has between 115 to 120 visitors every week. “We don’t ask any questions – you don’t need to produce a healthcare card or Medicare card, if anyone needs help we will give it to them,” Mrs Mackaness said. “We have people come through for the first time and they break down and cry, they are so overwhelmed and grateful.” The United Sikhs help out the Birdcage Community Store by cooking about 400 meals each fortnight to pass on to people in need. Mrs Mackaness said the store also gives the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency about 20 boxes and 120 meals every week for parents. It aids families from Wyndham Park Primary School with meals too.

The store is open between 9.30am-noon most Thursdays. Mrs Mackaness, who first became involved in the Birdcage by donating food through the Country Women’s Association, said her fellow CWA members often baked cakes and scones for the store to give to people in need. “We’re always grateful for any donations,”

Look after your mental health Mental health advocates headspace are calling for people to look after themselves during metro Melbourne’s extended circuit breaker lockdown. headspace clinical advice and governance manager Rupert Saunders said the effort to contain the COVID-19 virus has had an impact on how young people interact with family and friends, and how they access work and study. “For many young people, lockdown can be challenging – and it is normal to feel sad, angry or scared at this uncertain time,” Mr Saunders said. Mr Saunders said there are many “practical steps” a person can take to look after their mental health during this turbulent period, including staying connected with the people who are important to them, taking a break from the news cycle if feeling overwhelmed, making the the most of the permitted time for outdoor activity and doing things they know help them to feel calm and grounded. “If you are a young person – or a family member or friend of a young person – who needs support during this lockdown, consider connecting with eheadspace.” eheadspace is the organisation’s online and telephone support and counselling service, run by qualified mental health professionals. Pool campaign ramps up again By Alesha Capone A decade-long campaign to have Wyndham’s third major indoor sports or aquatic facility built in Point Cook is firing up again. The Point Cook Action Group (PCAG) is ramping its advocacy efforts for Wyndham council to construct the facility in their suburb and is calling for residents to lobby council on the issue. The council allocated $70,000 in its 2020-21 draft budget for a feasibility study into a third major indoor sports facility for the municipality.

PCAG secretary Christine Macpherson said that Point Cook residents have long been asking for an aquatic centre. “We feel it’s very much overdue, not just for us but for the community, which has been asking for an aquatic centre for at least 10 years now,” she said. Back in 2018, Ms Macpherson made a submission to Wyndham council’s annual budget, on behalf of PCAG, requesting a swimming pool or indoor recreational facility for the area. She said now would be “a brilliant

opportunity” to build an aquatic centre in Point Cook, after the state government committed to building new schools in the suburb in its 2021-22 budget. She said school students could potentially use the pool during the day and the public after hours and on weekends. Ms Macpherson said she understood why some Wyndham councillors were pushing for the third sports centre to be built in Tarneit, as the suburb is growing quickly. However, she said that Point Cook’s population was bigger – about 68,088 residents as opposed to Tarneit’s 47,720 residents – and

increasing rapidly. Ms Macpherson also suggested that a pool could be installed for public use at the $25 million sports training facility and 15,000 seat stadium which is planned for Sayers Road, Tarneit. “Here at Point Cook we won’t be able to do that unless council actually comes to the party, I don’t think anyone else will,” she said. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the council did not yet know whether the future facility would be an aquatic or indoor sports centre.

Family history stolen A Point Cook home owner is pleading with thieves to return wooden doors she and her father crafted together before he died. Christine said the two sets of wooden bi-fold doors, stolen from her Ladybird Drive house overnight between May 24 and 25, held great sentimental value. Christine and her father worked together to craft the doors, across a series of weekends. “I know they are just doors, but 10 years ago my dad and I installed the doors, we spent a lot of time working on them together, we cut them from raw timber and we stained them to get them just how we wanted. “Whenever I see the doors, they give me a nice feeling because I remember the time I spent with my father.” She said that since her father passed away in 2017, the doors were “even more sentimental to me”. Christine has lived in the Point Cook house for about 13 years and decided to

renovate the property, with the doors to be a centrepiece. She was alerted to the theft by her builder. Thieves used bolt-cutters to cut through temporary fencing, chains and locks at the property. The doors were removed from wall framing and would have required transport, such as a van or truck. Police are investigating the theft. Christine has posted a plea on the Point Cook Residents’ Facebook page for the thieves to return the doors. “My plea is for whoever took the doors to return them to me,” she said. “No sum of money could replace those doors.” Anyone with information, or who witnessed suspicious behaviour between 8pm, May 24 and 8am, May 25 in Ladybird Drive, can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. By Alesha Capone Demand for birthing suites at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached capacity. The hospital welcomed 3833 babies in 2020, slightly lower than the 3888 babies delivered there in 2019. Health services chief executive Jason Payne said Werribee Mercy Hospital’s birthing numbers had remained steady over the past two years because the birthing suites were unable to accommodate any more expectant mums. He said some pregnant women within the Werribee Mercy Hospital catchment are

being forced to use services at public hospitals outside the area. “The demand exists for Werribee Mercy Hospital to deliver more babies locally but this cannot occur without expanded facilities,” Mr Payne said. “It would be preferable that local families had access to more of the best high quality and safe public birthing services at Werribee Mercy Hospital, so they don’t have to travel.” Mr Payne said planning was under way to boost the capacity of the birthing suites. “A third stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is currently in the final stages of planning, will involve the creation of more

birthing suites, additional post-natal beds, and other ante and post-natal facilities, accompanied by additional midwifery and nursing staff. “Based on demand for existing maternity services, it is projected that Werribee Mercy Hospital would be well placed to meet an anticipated increase in demand of up to 30 per cent more babies in the western metro area.” Mr Payne said Mercy Health has been working with the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority and the Department of Health and Human Services since 2016 to prepare for the future needs of Werribee Mercy.

In November’s state budget, $4.8 million was allocated to finalise planning for the third stage of the hospital’s development. “We have acknowledged publicly the funding was a clear sign the voices of the people of the west of Melbourne are being heard and government is committed to meeting a major upgrade,” Mr Payne said. Mercy Health Group chief executive, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s construction required $300 million in funding “to ensure the people of Wyndham receive the level and quality of health services they deserve and need”.

Two Werribee historic sites, including trees and features from a century-old property previously owned by the Chirnside family, are set to be placed under heritage planning controls. Wyndham council last month voted to ask the minister for planning for permission to have parts of the former Manor estate and some homes in the Carter Avenue Precinct included in a heritage overlay amendment to the municipality’s planning scheme. The Manor was built by Percy Chirnside, son of pastoralist Andrew Chirnside, in 1895-1896. The 40-room house, which was used as a RAAF hospital in World War II, burned down in 1966. The council has moved to include surviving trees and remnants of a stone retaining wall into its heritage overlay so they will be protected under the Planning and Environment Act. A horse trough and archaeological remnants such as stepping stones in the Werribee River, a pump and well, will be included in a statement of significance in the Wyndham planning scheme. Sections of Wattamolla Avenue, Quarbing Street, Werribee Street North and Guyra Court, which are now where The Manor estate once was, will be covered by the overlay and statement. In Carter Avenue, dwellings, integrated garages, facades and front fences at 12 residences will be included in the heritage overlay after a study found they are of “local significance”. The residences, developed by architect WJ Bliss in the 1940s, were constructed as part of a housing estate for the Carter Brothers’ factory

Making her mark Young Bianca, pictured, is making her mark in the world of AFL. The five year-old Geelong supporter, who plays at the Truganina NAB AFL Auskick Centre, was last month named as a weekly nominee for the 2021 NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year competition. Depending on COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, Bianca and the other nominees will be given an opportunity to present an AFL premiership player with a medal on grand final day and play at the MCG at half-time during the game. One of the nominees will be crowned the overall Auskicker of the Year, winning $5000 and having Geelong Football Club captain Joel Selwood and AFLW star Katie Brennan as personal footy mentors for 2022. Bianca said it felt “great” to be named as a weekly nominee. Bianca and her father Brendan filmed her video entry to the competition, which showed the youngster demonstrating her kicking, tackling, marking and handballing skills. It also included drawings of her favourite players. Apart from participating in Auskick, Bianca said she enjoyed practicing her footy skills with brother Declan, who will be three this week.

A charity that helps to create safe homes for women and children who flee family violence is calling for volunteers in the northern and western suburbs. RizeUp, which is active in New South Wales and Queensland, is expanding its operations to Melbourne following a 10 per cent increase in domestic violence incidents across Victoria last year. RizeUp volunteers move items and furnish homes for people impacted by family violence. The organisation’s Melbourne volunteer homes co-ordinator, Suzanne Commerford, said she reached out to RizeUp last year, after seeing media reports about the increasing number of family violence incidents. “I thought, ‘I could be sitting on Facebook being angry or I can do something about this’,” she said. As a professional property stylist, Mrs Commerford said she had furniture which she could no longer display because it was slightly sun-damaged or scratched. She felt the furniture – and her skills – could be put to use at emergency or short-term accommodation, and private rentals, for women and children leaving refuges. Mrs Commerford said RizeUp worked with an agency that assists family violence survivors who are “basically starting again”. She said there was demand for RizeUp services across the state, but particularly in the north and west of Melbourne. She said RizeUp especially needed volunteers who are available in the day. Orange Door for Wyndham By Alesha Capone A service to assist people in the west who have experienced family violence will establish its main premises in Wyndham. The Orange Door network, which is already operational in eight Victorian regions, will commence services in western Melbourne next year. Wyndham council last week welcomed a state government announcement which confirmed the network’s primary premises in the west would be in the Wyndham area. Minister for Prevention of Family Violence Gabrielle Williams, who delivered the news, said that survivors of family violence – from children to adults – would be able to access The Orange Door network for free support. The network is part of the state government’s response to the Royal Commission into Family Violence. Family Safety Victoria, which was set up in 2017, is leading the establishment of The Orange Door. Wyndham’s community safety portfolio holder, Cr Susan McIntyre, said the council has been helping Family Safety Victoria with planning and to partner with local agencies.

“The network brings together workers from across specialist family violence, child and family, Aboriginal and men’s services to deliver risk assessments, safety planning and crisis assistance, as well as vital connections to ongoing support such as counselling,” Cr McIntyre said. “The Orange Door network at Wyndham will not only include the primary premises, but provide other face-to-face access points, outposted staff and outreach services. “This is an important step to ensuring that no matter where you live in the west, family violence support is available to all that need it.” During 2020, the number of family violence offences in Wyndham rose by 13.3 per cent (from 3263 to 3696 incidents). Across Wyndham, the number of family violence-related assaults increased from 884 in 2019 to 973 in 2020. The amount of family violence-related stalking, threatening and harassment offences increased from 136 in 2019 to 173 during last year. Future holds new promise Antony Rako is embarking on a new journey, and Vision Australia is right behind him. Mr Rako, of Point Cook, was born with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare genetic condition which causes his vision to deteriorate as he gets older. He is completing a two-year diploma of community services at Victoria University and has been able to purchase cutting edge technology to help his studies, thanks to a Vision Australia grant. The technology includes Job Access With Speech (JAWS) screen-reading software, a laptop, headphones and a system which takes photos of documents and coursework and reads out what is written. “The technology I’ve been able to get has made study so much more accessible and possible for me,” Mr Rako said. Mr Rako, who is in his 40s, is pursuing a career in community services after 20 years working as a music producer and audio engineer. He said he was taking longer to complete his

audio and music work because of his low vision and decided to change professions after talking with a friend who works as a disability case manager. “I’ve always had a passion for wanting to help people,” Mr Rako said. “With music, a lot of the time I would help people with their music without payment because I am so passionate about the music.” Mr Rako, who also plays the keyboard and sings, said he still does some audio engineering for his own enjoyment and people he was worked with for years. Upon graduating from university, he hopes to work in disability case management or with technology. “I’ve always had a big interest in technology and how it innovates and helps people,” he said. Building rainbow bridges In the Macedon Ranges, a new project is connecting queer people across the generational divide, writes Oliver Lees.

unded by the Australian government’s Regional Arts Fund and facilitated by Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s (SCCH) WayOut program, the Rainbow Bridges project provides a forum for young and old members of the LGTIQA+ community to share their experiences. SCCH project worker B usually specialises her work toward people more than 25 years of age, but said the idea to create an intergenerational program came after consulting her colleague, Mez, who typically runs programs for the youth.

“We felt it was important to bring people together and do something really meaningful,” B said. “There are few organised situations in which older and younger LGBTIQA+ people have the opportunity to come together and build a sense of shared belonging. “We wanted to give people positive role models, so that younger people could learn LGBT history from older people and vice versa.” The project began in 2019 as younger individuals were paired with older counterparts. After being disrupted through 2020 during the coronavirus lockdown, the program resumed and the pairs started to meet again. The project wrapped up with the creation of a photographic exhibition and video clips that highlighted the connections they had made.

Mez said the final product did the project justice. “Across the board what was reflected in the film was the respect they had for each other,

the reciprocity of it all was really important,” Mez said. “Everyone came together with an understanding and willingness to participate. “And that was captured really well, I think

many were actually surprised about how much they got out of the process and all of the interviews were quite different. “I think ultimately they felt seen.”

As an older participant, Drew can attest to the value of the project. “In some ways there were a lot of commonalities,” he said, explaining his experience of getting to know the younger participants. “Obviously some of the cultural change is enormous. “I think that’s absolutely wonderful, the fact that most families accept homosexuality and that was demonstrated with the Yes vote. “But for kids that feel different, there are no obvious role models, so in order to grow up with a sense of belonging you have to find your queer peers, and that’s the same today as it was for me.” Living in Bendigo in the 1970s, Drew lived with his partner and was open about his sexuality at a time when homosexuality was illegal. He attended St Paul’s Cathedral in the area, but said he decided to leave after feeling unwelcome. “On one occasion, the Vicar pulled me aside and told me I was living in sin,” Drew said. “I thought to myself, this seems to be more of a problem for you than it is for me, and I left.” Decades later, Drew was welcomed back into that exact same church group. In 2019, Drew married his partner, Noel, who is a member of the clergy at St Paul’s Cathedral in Bendigo. “I’m accepted by that community now,” he said. “It’s quite bizarre, the church that I was estranged from is now something I love and am a part of, but it just shows how much things have changed.” Noel, who was also a participant in the

program, said he had a much different experience, as he only came to terms with his sexuality later in life. “Once I realised, I had this terrific feeling of knowing who I am,” he said. “I’m now physically, spiritually and emotionally free, and I know I can fully love myself because I know who I am.” After running for two weeks at the Old Auction House, the photographic exhibit has been shifted to the SCCH office in Kyneton, where it will stay on permanent display. The project was celebrated with a private

opening where participants, project workers and friends and families were invited to view the works. Younger participant and Sunbury resident Brittany said it was valuable to hear of the experience of others. “I thought watching the other interviews that it turned out brilliantly,” she said. “How much people [in the past] had to lean on each other and the fact they didn’t have as many safe spaces. “My friends have had quite safe spaces in comparison.”

Looking ahead, Mez said this project was just the beginning. We have learnt so much and we definitely want to do more intergenerational things,” she said. “We recognise the importance of creating connections between community members.” The photographs can be viewed at the SCCH office at 1 Caroline Chisholm Drive, Kyneton from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Keep a lid on the flu Now’s the time most of us get our annual flu shot. But there are far fewer confirmed cases of influenza in Australia than in previous flu seasons. It’s one of the few silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic. Border closures, social distancing and improved public hygiene have not only helped us to control coronavirus, but have kept the lid on flu. So should we bother to get our flu jab? Absolutely. Less flu in the community does not reduce your chance of becoming ill if you do contract the virus, which is highly contagious and still has time to take hold this year. Catching the flu can spell weeks off work, time away from family and friends, and even life-threatening complications such as pneumonia. In a normal year, thousands of Australians are hospitalised and hundreds die from flu or flu complications. The elderly are particularly susceptible to serious illness, as are pregnant women, and those with weakened immunity. These are also the groups strongly advised to get the annual flu shot – although the vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of six months. Flu is imported to Australia each year, and each year a ‘seasonal’ flu vaccine is developed to combat the most commonly circulating strains. This is why you need a flu shot every year. Flu generally takes hold around April to May, and peaks from June to September. As the vaccine is most effective in the first three to four months, now is the time to get one. Border closures have likely contributed to the decline in flu. Yet our borders will eventually

reopen, and flu will increase. But we can, and should, learn from our COVID-19 experience – by maintaining good hygiene practices, getting our flu shots, and staying home if unwell. Of course, if you notice signs of cold or flu, your first step is to get a COVID-19 test and self-isolate until you get your results.

Remember, too, that a flu shot will not protect you from COVID-19 – nor will a COVID-19 vaccine protect you from flu. But it will reduce your risk of getting dangerously ill by contracting both COVID-19 and flu simultaneously. You need to wait 14 days between having your

flu shot and getting a COVID-19 vaccination. Otherwise, if you’re feeling well, roll up your sleeve, to keep everyone safe. Flu shots are readily available from GPs and pharmacists, and at some community sessions. You never forget the flu – so please, don’t forget your flu shot.

Seniors share their stories Victoria is celebrating seniors living in aged care with a new program designed to showcase the resilience shown by aged care residents and staff over the past year. ‘Recognising senior Victorians’ shines a light on the efforts of both residents and staff during the global COVID-19 pandemic and celebrates the contributions of older Victorians throughout their lives. People living in aged care have great life stories to tell and the ‘Victorian Seniors Festival’ has worked with aged care facilities to interview and capture the life stories of 50 aged care residents for the community to enjoy. Recognising senior Victorians also includes ‘shout-outs’ in support of staff and volunteers who have gone above and beyond while working in Victoria’s aged care facilities in 2020. It celebrates great stories of seniors such as Gay Halstead, chosen as a hostess to accompany Queen Elizabeth II on her 1954 tour of Australia, and Les Trigg who lived through WWII battles in Papua New Guinea and survived post-traumatic stress disorder to go on and have a family with his wife Pam. Recognising senior Victorians life stories are published at Seniors Online, in place of the 2020 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards, which could not proceed due to the pandemic. The Victorian Seniors Festival will include a six-month virtual program from to November, 2021, as well as in-person events in October to celebrate Victoria’s one million seniors aged 60 and over. Plan ahead and be road safe this long weekend Operation Regal 2021 is a state-wide Road Policing Operation over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend period. It aims to increase driver awareness and journey planning, while reducing road trauma during this high risk time on our roads. This four-day road policing enforcement campaign will run from Friday, June 11 to Monday, June 14, 2021. Road Policing Advisor Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol advises that the operation will be conducted throughout all operational police regions and police service areas, using all available personnel from local road policing units, general duties and other regional resources. Police will be targeting the main causes of lives lost and serious injuries in crashes: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint and seat belt non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug) Fatigue is one of the biggest killers and a major cause of the loss of life on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure they take at least a 15-minute break at least every two hours – simply don’t drive if tired. Sergeant Wallace says that road trauma isn’t just about the lives that are lost. “It’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones,” he says. “The entire community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.” RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings notes it has been demonstrated time after time that speed

is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained.

“And put your phone away where you can’t be tempted to use it - for example, in the glove box or in the boot to avoid being distracted.” Mr Giddings adds that the work of his group,

along with initiatives such as Operation Regal, will hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asks the community to report speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

SPORT Inclusive soccer academy launched Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club (HCSC) and the KS Foundation have launched a program for children with autism to play the sport. The foundation was established by Western United player Kaine Sheppard, inspired by his brother Jake’s love of coming to watch him play every week. HCSC president Jessie Gallagher-Smart said the ASD Academy would give children with autism a chance to learn soccer skills in a fun way every week, without sensory overloads such as introducing them to 20 other young players at once. “We just wanted an activity where it’s fun, they can run and take part and won’t get in trouble if they need to stop or take a break,” she said. Mrs Gallagher-Smart said the ASD Academy acted as a bridging program into HCSC’s Academy program for other young players. Coaches across the two groups help children

transition from one academy to the other, and the youngsters with autism can also return to playing with the ASD Academy if they wish. The ASD Academy kicked off last month but has suspended its weekly sessions because of restrictions imposed by the latest COVID-19 lockdown. Mrs Gallagher-Smart, who runs the program with her husband, said their eldest son is on the autism spectrum. She said there was not a readily-available opportunity for him to play soccer. “As we were coming up against this, we thought lots of families would be as well,” she said. “At our club, we want to involve everyone, no one has to sit on the sidelines – we will facilitate a way for everyone to take part.” Mrs Gallagher-Smart said her son enjoyed the friendship aspect the ASD program provides, with the players also having their own

handshake and songs. “I feel like the kids really get something out of the social side of it,” she said. Mrs Gallagher-Smart said Kaine Sheppard’s involvement in the academy has been great. She said she had been talking with Shepherd about taking the ASD Academy players to watch a Western United game. Children interested in the ASD Academy can take part in a trial. After that, the cost is $15. Mrs Gallagher-Smart said if there is enough interest, HCSC might set up a program for teenagers with autism. Second time lucky By Tara Murray It’s second time lucky for new Melbourne recruit Kye Declase. The 24-year-old, who trained with the Demons earlier this year, missed out on a rookie spot. But he has since attracted plenty of attention playing for Werribee in the Victorian Football League and was last week selected by the Demons in the mid-season rookie draft. Declase had been enjoying his best season at the VFL, averaging 22.2 disposals including 16 kicks, 7.4 marks and almost five inside 50s, while also adding six goals, across Werribee’s first five matches. Demons recruiting manager Jason Taylor said they had seen Declase’s development this year. “He came and did a little trial with us in the pre-season and we decided to not go in that direction at that very time,” Taylor said. “Mark ‘Choco’ Williams, having coached

Kye before, was not pushing him by any means, but he was strong he would improve in a full-on experience. “We’ve been able to watch him and he’s been able to produce his best football at state league level, so at 24, really starting to blossom. “He’s a player we’ve watched over the years and showed his talent in small snippets, he’s starting to mature.” In a video to Werribee fans, Declase thanked the club for the support it had given him. “To the playing group, it has been an incredible journey, all been amazing, not only the boys, but the whole community,” he said. “You’ve made my time there unforgettable. “To the fans, you’re the heartbeat of the club, thank you for supporting me and showing me love through rain, hail or shine. “To the whole Werribee family, I wouldn’t be where I am without you guys, so excited to start the next chapter at the Melbourne Football Club.”

Werribee coach Michael Barlow said he was thrilled for Declase. He said the credit needs to go to former Werribee coach Williams who helped Declase identify his AFL potential. “He was probably disappointed initially to miss out [earlier in the year], but he came back to Werribee and continued his good form from a couple of years ago, the AFL traits have shone through and now he gets his opportunity,” Barlow said. “Choco in the 2019 season really opened up Kye’s observations in terms of his own abilities and traits and where he could go with it. “He was a genuine winger for us and was ‘Mr Fix-it’ essentially. “For someone like Kye, who is fully invested and has done a lot of things right in a semi-professional environment, to now be going into a full-time footy environment, it’s going to be pretty exciting to watch the next level he can go to.”

Point Cook Cricket Club has appointed a new head coach and assistant coach for its 2020-21 season. Hari Krishan, who recently moved to the west and spent three years as a captain and coach at Dandenong West Cricket Club, has been appointed as Point Cook’s head coach and First XI captain. James Peterson, who debuted at Point Cook in the Under-11s, has been appointed as an assistant coach and continues in his role as First XI vice-captain. Krishan has 20 years’ experience, including first class cricket in India and as part of an Indian Premier League camp with the Kolkata Knight Riders. “I will be developing some comprehensive training programs to understand the existing skill level and areas I’d need to work on,” he said. Peterson said he has watched the club grow across the past 15 years. “The depth of young talent we have at Point Cook makes it such a desirable place to stay and I cannot wait for the challenges of being an assistant coach,” he said. “The prospect of working alongside our new senior coach Hari and all our fantastic junior players is one of the main reasons I wanted to become an assistant coach at Point Cook.” Point Cook Cricket Club president Adrian Farrier said the club did not formally appoint coaches last year becuase of the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. “Instead, individuals stepped up from within the club to collectively perform the head coach roles,” he said. Werribee takes lockdown in its stride By Tara Murray Werribee vice-captain Matt Hanson had a feeling the Victorian Football League season would come to a halt at some point this year because of a snap COVID-19 lockdown. But having been through three lockdowns, including one that resulted in all VFL commitments being cancelled last year, he said the Werribee playing group knows what it needs to do. While a fourth lockdown presents challenges, Hanson and his teammates are focused on the small stuff. “It’s not ideal,” Hanson said. “We’re 3-0 in the last three games, so it’s not great timing for us. “We expected it to happen at some stage during the year. We had Sods [Michael Sodomaco], Gribbs [Tom Gribble] and Coughs [Nick Coughlan] take us through a workshop with the potential of what might happen. “We’ve kept the mindset that you essentially control what you can control and there’s things outside football. “Footy is always going to be there.” Hanson said going through last year’s lockdown made it easier for them to know now what they need to do to stay prepared for the rest of the season. “Everyone is pretty diligent in their training,” he said. “We’re training with one other person and doing really basic skills sessions. We’re also doing strength and conditioning work to keep the muscles going.” Werribee football manager Mark Micallef was living in Perth last year, so this latest snap lockdown is a new experience. He says he’s been impressed by how the playing group has handled it. “They just knew what to do when we told them we were going into lockdown,” he said. “They grabbed stuff out of the gym, all grabbed a football each … We’ve been really strong in the communication through Zoom or Whatsapp …they’ve been fantastic … to be quite frank.”

Micallef said while they were keen for the players to continue their ﬁtness and skills, ensuring the mental health of the group is looked after is even more important. “It is absolutely huge,” he said. “It’s at the forefront of us at the moment, because we are dealing with young men and we understand they have a lot of time on their hands and a bit more going on in their lives than just football. “These guys are either studying and working and have personal things as well.

We have to make sure we are across all those areas and take care of the person ﬁrst and foremost and the footballer second. “We check in every second night over Zoom and run some interactive games, to keep their minds ticking over, along with some ice-breakers.” With a lockdown end date still unknown, Werribee has been planning for all scenarios. Micallef admits they are at a slight

disadvantage compared to the AFL-aligned clubs, whose AFL-listed players can train throughout the lockdown. But he said the way the players prepare week in, week out, will hold them in good stead. Hanson said they’ll be ready to return to the ﬁeld once given the green light. “We take it as it comes,” he said. “We’ve already spoken about playing without training as a group. It’s something we’re prepared for.”
