Pantry doors are open Two Seaholme neighbours have joined the Pataka Movement, providing food and essentials in a street pantry for those struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Virgin Australia airline captain Daniel Thom and Kate De Marco started the Seaholme Community Pantry after seeing how quickly people’s circumstances could change, both financially and emotionally. Mr Thom said he was stood down at the height of the pandemic but considered himself one of the lucky ones. “I saw colleagues at work all of a sudden not getting a wage in and how financially things can change overnight,” he said. “I could see a lot of pressure and how even though we might be living in a nice house and have a nice car, behind the doors you don’t know what people are suffering.” Melbourne’s Pataka Movement was founded by ground crew member Hollie Smith with her friend Gayle Crawford, both Wyndham residents originally from New Zealand. Arcare outbreak concern By Goya Dmytryshchak A growing COVID-19 cluster linked to the Arcare Maidstone Residential Aged Care facility has been linked to the City of Whittlesea and Port Melbourne outbreaks. Victoria recorded two new locally acquired cases and one in hotel quarantine on Tuesday, bringing the total number of active cases to 92. One of the new cases was an Arcare worker’s household contact, bringing the total number of cases linked to the facility to 10. Deputy chief health officer Allen Cheng said an Arcare worker had infected other staff and residents. “Someone has worked while infectious and

infected three residents and then there has been transmission within the home to other workers,” he said. “What we do know is that genomically it seems to be linked to the general City of Whittlesea/Port Melbourne outbreak, so it is the Kappa variant. “But the first person in that outbreak doesn’t live anywhere near Whittlesea and as far as we know hasn’t been up in that direction … we haven’t been able to identify any other epidemiological links at this stage.” COVID-19 testing commander Jeroen Weimar said health authorities were particularly concerned about Arcare and another exposure location, a construction site on Queen Street in the CBD.

“We have over 490 primary close contacts,” he said. “Over 400 have returned a negative test result, an encouraging step forward, but there are a few more to chase down.” The Department of Health declared all workers in Arcare’s Magnolia wing to be close contacts of Sunday’s infected worker case, and they were required to self-isolate for 14 days. Arcare chief executive Colin Singh said Arcare was working with the federal government to ensure the facility had enough workers. “To specifically address the issue of team members working at more than one site, a new package has been introduced to ensure all staff only work at their primary place of work, with Arcare agreeing to compensate them for any

income they forego as a result of lost shifts at other locations,” Mr Singh said. “COVID-19 has been contained to the Magnolia wing, with strict procedures in place to ensure team members don’t cross over into other areas of the residence, including utilising a separate entrance to the building.” Victoria’s list of exposure sites has grown to more than 300, including 7-Eleven stores at Yarraville and Maribyrnong, the Werribee and Sunbury train lines and Williamstown Post Office in the past week. Dr Cheng said Melbourne was “on track” for restrictions to be eased at 11.59pm Thursday provided there are no unexpected cases. Council bin checks slammed By Goya Dmytryshchak Some Hobsons Bay residents have taken to social media to protest about council workers inspecting their mixed recycling bins for contamination and what they label a “confusing system”. Hobsons Bay council is checking the yellow bins for non-permitted items, which can send a whole truckload of recyclables to landfill. The move comes after the council last year introduced Recycling 2.0. The council cut the weekly garbage collection to fortnightly and introduced a four-bin system to separate general waste, mixed recyclables, glass, and food and green waste. Items accepted in the

yellow bins include plastic bottles with code 1 or 2, plastic containers with code 5, unwaxed paper or cardboard, aluminium and steel cans. Kim Browning posted she was angry after her yellow bin was found to be contaminated and went uncollected. “So angry that my bin wasn’t emptied today along with loads [of] others in my street,” she stated. “The ridiculous reason on the sticker is out of control.

“So by the time they come back in two weeks’ time it will be a month’s worth of recycling for five people in one small bin. “Causing more trouble than a couple of pieces of waxy paper would.” Ms Browning told Star Weekly the council said she could put the bin out six days later on a Saturday to be emptied for landfill or sort out her bin and put it out in a fortnight for recycling. Laura Robinson posted that she didn’t know what had contaminated her bin. “We got a non-descriptive letter saying we’d put something wrong in our recycling in the letterbox but didn’t say what it was and they still collected it.”

Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the bin checks were part of a community education campaign. “There has been a lot to take in and one area that still needs work is helping people understand which items can go in mixed recycling bins,” he said. “Council has a number of education activities under way to help households improve their recycling, and make recycling easy. “One aspect of this is checking bins for contamination. This is the only way that we can give households feedback on what is happening in their own bins.” The council is inviting anyone not sure about what to put in their bins to call 1300 179 944.

The awards celebrate the best beer in the world and are conducted by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV). For the 2021 awards, more than 75 judges tasted 2500 entries from 402 exhibitors from 21 countries.

RASV chief executive Brad Jenkins said: “As the world’s largest annual beer competition judging both draught and packaged beer, the [awards are] the pinnacle benchmarking opportunity for brewers. “After the challenges of 2020, it was fabulous to conduct the awards again this year and receive 2500 entries from more than 400 exhibitors and then see the beer industry come

An Altona Meadows woman has this month won $852,000 in TattsLotto as one of seven division one winners nationally. The woman plans to use her win to speed up her retirement and maybe buy a new vacuum cleaner. When told of her win by an official from The Lot, the winner initially thought it was a scam and hung up. After checking her ticket, she called back. “This isn’t even registering right now, I can’t believe this,” she told The Lot official. “It’s absolutely fantastic. It’s a huge, huge shock. I just can’t believe it. “I need to take the day to let it all sink in. “We’re in lockdown at the moment so we can’t do too much to celebrate but we might get some takeaway and crack open a bottle of wine tonight.” The woman said the windfall had sped up her retirement plans and she might “do a few little things to spoil myself”. “I might get some nice jewellery or even a new Dyson vacuum,” she said. Help for Newport family By Goya Dmytryshchak A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to support the family of Newport dad Jim Vasiliadis who last month lost his fight with cancer. Mr Vasiliadis, 56, was well known for his family’s involvement with Newport Power Junior Football Club and basketball with Williamstown Magic Basketball. Newport Power coach Jason Cranage organised the GoFundMe campaign to support Mr Valiliadis’ wife Angela and children, Zoee, 15, and Luke, 12. “I’ve coached Luke for a number of years now and as such I’ve got to know the family,” said Mr Cranage, who also manages a group called DONS (Dads of Newport and Surrounds). “Just before Jim died, he approached me personally and just asked if I could be there to support the family when he was gone,” he said. “Jim lived for his family, loved his Ford cars. “He was a proud family man who wanted to do the best for them.” Mr Cranage said the family had been overwhelmed by the community support received so far. “In the last three days, it’s gone over the target amount [$10,000], which is absolutely

Cinema set to open Reading Cinemas plans to open its doors at Altona North on June 17 – as long as Melbourne isn’t in lockdown. The six-screen complex, at Millers Junction at 290-298 Millers Road, will be Hobsons Bay’s first major cinema complex. There will be full recliner seating and the latest in 4K digital projection and sound. It will have two titan luxe auditoriums, with Dolby Atmos immersive sound and screens measuring some 20 metres. The first films to screen will include Fast & Furious 9, A Quiet Place 2, Cruella, The Conjuring 3, Dream Horse and Spirit Untamed. Reading Cinemas Australia’s managing director Mark Douglas said he was excited “to bring such an advanced cinema to the inner western region of Melbourne”. “Altona North is a thriving area and we look forward to providing a theatrical experience for our new guests that is of a world-class standard, starting at just $12 a ticket,” he said. The cinema is part of a $70 million shopping centre built by property fund manager Charter Hall as the last stage of the $250 million Millers Junction precinct. Pandemic books help ease children’s fears Children’s storytime has changed with pandemic books being read during the COVID-19 crisis. Books such as Pandemic by Jackie French and illustrated by Bruce Whatley and Villony Virus comes to town by Janice McKay are being read at sessions hosted by Hobsons Bay Libraries. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council had quickly moved to adapt. “Throughout the pandemic, we have invested in new books to entertain and inform such as [these],” he said. “We have also significantly increased our collection of e-books and audio books, which can easily be borrowed online 24/7 even when our library doors are closed.

“Our libraries have quickly moved many programs and events online in response to state government restrictions. “I encourage families to jump onto the library website and book into the Stay-at-home sessions.” Werribee’s Daniela Lim has written a free online children’s book and video explaining the pandemic, Mia the Magpie and Rex the Rabbit fight the coronavirus. “Speaking to friends of mine with kids, I realised that some children have been worried or anxious and parents did not always know what to say,” Lim said. “So, I created a book that would address what kids could do to stay safe without it becoming an overwhelming issue which they feel like

Thieves have stolen nine acacia and eucalyptus trees planted in an Altona Meadows reserve as part of a council plan to increase Hobsons Bay’s canopy. Residents first noticed the trees missing from the reserve and notified the council. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said tree theft and vandalism cost all ratepayers. “Council recently planted 40 trees at the reserve on the corner of Victoria Street and Roach Drive in Altona Meadows as part of our Urban Forest Strategy,” he said. “The strategy aims to reach a city-wide tree canopy of 30 per cent by 2040. “Replacing vandalised and stolen plants and trees costs council around $10,000 every year – this money could be used on a range of things, including planting more trees for the municipality.” It comes as the council organises numerous free tree giveaways in various suburbs. Pfizer jab at GP-led clinic By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona North clinic on Thursday became one of the first GP practices in Melbourne’s west to administer the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine. The Altona North Respiratory Clinic was expected to vaccinate 120 people with Pfizer on Thursday. The federal government has released an extra 130,000 COVID-19 vaccines statewide.

There will be an immediate release of 40,000 doses this week and an extra 15,000 doses each week for six weeks. The Altona North clinic’s partner and Australian Medical Association state council chairman, Mukesh Haikerwal, said the pilot aimed to empower more GPs to administer vaccines closer to home. “The state has decided to give access to everybody 40-49 without any questions to

Pfizer so that’s a good thing. “We’re also helping the state to see how that works in the general practice setting, not in the hospital or a hub – the mass vaccine setting – alone. “It’s about trial and seeing if we can empower general practice to do more of this so people can have their vaccines nearer to home rather than having to go queue up for hours at a mass hub”

‘I’ve got nothing left’: Restaurateur pleads for help A Seddon restaurateur said he “was on his knees begging“ Maribyrnong council for help after two of its officers threatened to call police over a marquee. In an emotional Facebook post, Eamon Walmsley from Charles & Gamon bar and kitchen said that in April, after gaining planning permission from the council, he erected an igloo marquee to weatherproof the venue for winter. “On Friday, two representatives of Maribyrnong council came to C&G and informed us the marquee was a permanent structure and had to be removed,” he posted. “In the most breathtaking confrontation I have had in my professional life, I was informed if the structure was not down in seven days the police would be called.”

Mr Walmsley said that without the marquee, the restaurant couldn’t meet patron density limits when it reopened after the fourth COVID-19 lockdown is lifted. “ … I don’t know how many more times I can get up from the mat guys,” he posted. “I have emailed everyone from the mayor on down … City of Maribyrnong did a goddamn post on their social media about how lovely we all were. “So, I need help, please. I’m not writing this in anger, but hope … I am on my knees begging @cityofmaribyrnong please please help me. “I’ve got nothing left.” After being contacted by Star Weekly, Maribyrnong mayor Michael Clarke apologised and said he was confident the matter could be resolved.

“We’re working with Charles & Gamon to resolve the safety issue that has arisen with the erection of the large marquee that’s been installed to support outdoor dining at the venue,” he said. “We apologise for any distress to the proprietor but the marquee, as erected, inadvertently created a public safety risk for patrons by blocking access out of the restaurant in the event of an emergency. “Throughout the week, council has worked with the owner to ensure the correct emergency exit guidelines can be met. “More importantly, council is committed to work with the owner on an ongoing basis to reach a workable solution.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Residents keen to have their say Maribyrnong Cr Cuc Lam It is pleasing to see the levels of engagement from residents of the Stony Creek ward on some of the key strategic documents council is considering for adoption on June 15. As well as the Council Plan, this includes the proposed redevelopment of Skinner Reserve in Braybook, 500 people viewed the draft plans on council’s engagement portal, Your City Your Voice, of whom 51 filled in the attached survey. Most of the feedback came from immediate neighbours or ward residents. There has also been a lot of interest in the proposed upgrades to Pennell Reserve, which will also be considered by council in the coming weeks. These are examples of how members of the Stony Creek ward can be part of council decision-making and I encourage you all to seize the opportunities to provide feedback wherever possible. As Stony Creek ward councillor, I am also always available to listen to any feedback directly and to offer assistance to residents who may need support. The Victorian Planning Authority has also been undertaking community engagement on the Braybrook Regeneration Project, designed to improve the quality of social housing in the suburb. Council is awaiting with interest the results of this engagement to understand our community thinking around this project. It is wonderful to see the return of more children’s programs to our libraries, especially our Bilingual Story Time sessions, which had

Bulldogs great turns 102 By Goya Dmytryshchak The Western Bulldogs’ oldest past player, a former club president, has celebrated his second birthday in a row locked down. Jim Miller, who was born in West Footscray and now lives in Altona North, was 102 during Victoria’s fourth COVID-19 lockdown. Born a year after World War I ended and the Spanish flu pandemic started, Mr Miller has also lived through the Great Depression and World War II. Mr Miller was part of the first Footscray team to play in a VFL final in 1938, his first season at the highest level. After playing more than 130 games during 11 years, Mr Miller became vice-president of the Footscray Football Club from 1957-63 and president from 1963-66. Speaking to Star Weekly by phone from TLC Aged Care – Marina, Mr Miller said he was “like a cricketer”. “I’m 102 not out but the next ball might get you,” he said. “We were very fortunate where I am – they’ve been very, very good about it and not one person here has had it [COVID-19]. “No one’s allowed in and we’re not allowed out. You feel quite safe here. “You know, I’ve a lot of time to think sitting here in this room and the difference to when I was young and today are unbelievable. “Melbourne here, when I went to the Footscray Technical School in 1931, ’32 and ’33, one of those years a teacher taught us that there were 750,000 people in the whole of Melbourne, which took in Dandenong to Sunshine and all the suburbs, and now there’s six million.” Most of his childhood was spent growing up in Footscray’s Pilgrim Street and by age seven he was often at the football ground of a

weekend selling Football Records and watching games. After leaving school, he moved to First Street in West Footscray, where he met his future wife, Jean, who lived across the road. They were married just before Christmas in 1940 and moved to Suffolk Street, West Footscray, where they lived for the next 77 years.

During WWII, Mr Miller enlisted in the army and air force and was stationed at Perth before returning to Benalla in country Victoria, becoming a flying instructor. He later became self-employed as a transport operator of chemicals, bullets and dynamite around Australia. Mr Miller said he watched every Western

Bulldogs game, and other games, in his room at Altona North. He said the secret to a long life included “good women and good food”. “I’ve had broken bones and things during my life, like most people get, but by and large I’ve been very fortunate health-wise,” Mr Miller said. “I can’t recall ever having a cold.”

Jobless youth numbers soar By Tara Murray Youth unemployment in Melbourne’s west has grown to more than 20 per cent due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Western Melbourne Local Jobs Taskforce, Jobs for young people, women over 45 and refugee migrants are among those who have been hardest hit, according to Western Melbourne Local Jobs taskforce head Terry Kennedy. Mr Kennedy, who is a local employment facilitator, said there had been some negative impacts of the pandemic across the west. “Youth unemployment is up around the 20

per cent mark in March this year, it was about 11 per cent before COVID-19,” he said. “The youth unemployment issue is ongoing. Women 45-plus and refugee migrants are others who have been affected. “We’re focused on getting as many opportunities as possible for particular groups. We want to try and bring those people into employment and work with them if they’ve been retrenched to try and stop them from being unemployed long term.” Mr Kennedy, who has worked in employment across the west for the past 10 years, said the taskforce will play a key role in helping to try and bring some co-ordination between

different parties in employment. “We’re trying to get a co-ordinated approach to fill skill shortages in the west and get disadvantaged workers in roles, whether through government investment or private investment.” Mr Kennedy said there were many key industries in the west that were booming and they were looking to place workers in those jobs. “They’re always calling for people in the health sector,” he said. “Whether it’s in hospitality, catering or transport, we’re always looking to get people in the region qualified for allied health types of roles. Health is growing

in terms of demand and services are increasing. “Transport and logistics is also huge at the moment. Manufacturing in the region has gone up. There will be a big need for workers in construction in the next 10-15 years. “We’re working with some of the big companies as well to make sure local people are getting opportunities.” Brimbank council was due to host a meeting of the taskforce late last month, but the meeting was held online because of COVID-19 restrictions. Mayor Ranka Rasic said the taskforce is a welcome step in contributing to the region’s economy and creating more job opportunities.

Chalk drawings brighten lockdown Children – and adults – from the 4th Williamstown Sea Scouts are brightening up the streets during the fourth COVID-19 lockdown by competing for a chalk drawing prize. Joey Scout, Ruby, age 6, and Cub Scout, Rosie, age nine, were among those who took part in the competition.

Sailmaster Robert Hague, who is the group leader of all 145 Scouts, said the contest aimed to help the children cope with lockdown. “We all cope with lockdown differently but for the young it can be particularly hard to process,” he said. “Last year, we learnt the value of creative engagement through art prizes and right now,

at the start of winter, yet again under lockdown, there could be nothing more perfect than a rainbow of chalk on the footpath. “Plus having our little chalk drawing prize judged by the national art critic, Dr Andrew Frost, is just the icing on the cake.”

Maribyrnong council’s chief executive Stephen Wall has been appointed to lead Wyndham council from August 9. Mr Wall has served as Maribyrnong’s chief executive for six and a half years. “I am thrilled to be appointed as Wyndham city’s chief executive officer,” he said. “I’ve watched the work of Wyndham for many years now and I’m looking forward to joining the organisation and working with the council to serve the needs of the Wyndham community. “I chose many years ago to commit to working in the local government sector as I firmly believe it to be the level of government that has the most direct impact on the lives of residents. “I will bring energy and enthusiasm to working at Wyndham and can’t wait to roll my sleeves up and start working with councillors on the exciting and challenging agenda for the city.” Former Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby resigned in March to work for the city of Hobart. Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said the municipality would benefit from Mr Wall’s experience in the local government sector for more than 23 years, including as chief executive at Surf Coast Shire. Planned two-way bike path dangerous: Cyclist The head of a major Hobsons Bay cycling group has criticised the council’s plans for a two-way bicycle path in Spotswood, where riders in one lane would be travelling towards oncoming vehicles. Hobsons Bay council is proposing the path along Hall Street to provide a major north-south cyclist link from Federation Trail to Newport. Hobsons Bay Bicycle User Group convenor Noel Dyson said the proposed path would be dangerous for cyclists. “It resembles what’s on Beaconsfield Parade, Albert Park, where you have a two-way bicycle speedway next to pedestrian footpaths,” he said.“Two-way bicycle paths or lanes are really

scary when riding seemingly head-on towards a car, bus or truck less than 50 centimetres away from the end of your handlebar. “If a truck is coming the opposite direction … you’ve got nowhere to go. If you collide with a bicycle, you’d go under the truck head-first. “They’re dangerous, I don’t like them.” Mr Dyson said the path could also place cyclists at risk from left-turning vehicles. “What motorists and bicycle riders don’t know is that cars etcetera can be driven in the bicycle traffic lane for up to 50 metres for cars to turn left, and to overtake on the left of a right-turning vehicle they are following, provided it is safe to do so,” he said. Its peacefulness, the parks and gardens, and friendly, multicultural people. We also enjoy the birdlife, from the occasional swamp harrier wheeling majestically in the sky to the tiny, beautiful blue wren flitting about in a park in delightful tranquillity. What would you change or what could be improved? As COVID-19 has devastated the world, and as the world shrinks into a neighbourhood,

more contact between people within a local neighbourhood might be conducive to sharing experiences and support, regardless of age, nationality and culture. Building rainbow bridges In the Macedon Ranges, a new project is connecting queer people across the generational divide, writes Oliver Lees.

unded by the Australian government’s Regional Arts Fund and facilitated by Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s (SCCH) WayOut program, the Rainbow Bridges project provides a forum for young and old members of the LGTIQA+ community to share their experiences. SCCH project worker B usually specialises her work toward people more than 25 years of age, but said the idea to create an intergenerational program came after consulting her colleague, Mez, who typically runs programs for the youth.

“We felt it was important to bring people together and do something really meaningful,” B said. “There are few organised situations in which older and younger LGBTIQA+ people have the opportunity to come together and build a sense of shared belonging. “We wanted to give people positive role models, so that younger people could learn LGBT history from older people and vice versa.” The project began in 2019 as younger individuals were paired with older counterparts. After being disrupted through 2020 during the coronavirus lockdown, the program resumed and the pairs started to meet again. The project wrapped up with the creation of a photographic exhibition and video clips that highlighted the connections they had made. Mez said the final product did the project justice. “Across the board what was reflected in the film was the respect they had for each other, the reciprocity of it all was really important,” Mez said. “Everyone came together with an understanding and willingness to participate.

“And that was captured really well, I think many were actually surprised about how much they got out of the process and all of the interviews were quite different. “I think ultimately they felt seen.” As an older participant, Drew can attest to the value of the project. “In some ways there were a lot of commonalities,” he said, explaining his experience of getting to know the younger participants. “Obviously some of the cultural change is enormous. “I think that’s absolutely wonderful, the fact that most families accept homosexuality and that was demonstrated with the Yes vote. “But for kids that feel different, there are no obvious role models, so in order to grow up with a sense of belonging you have to find your

queer peers, and that’s the same today as it was for me.” Living in Bendigo in the 1970s, Drew lived with his partner and was open about his sexuality at a time when homosexuality was illegal. He attended St Paul’s Cathedral in the area, but said he decided to leave after feeling unwelcome. “On one occasion, the Vicar pulled me aside and told me I was living in sin,” Drew said. “I thought to myself, this seems to be more of a problem for you than it is for me, and I left.” Decades later, Drew was welcomed back into that exact same church group. In 2019, Drew married his partner, Noel, who is a member of the clergy at St Paul’s Cathedral in Bendigo.

“I’m accepted by that community now,” he said. “It’s quite bizarre, the church that I was estranged from is now something I love and am a part of, but it just shows how much things have changed.” Noel, who was also a participant in the program, said he had a much different experience, as he only came to terms with his sexuality later in life. “Once I realised, I had this terrific feeling of knowing who I am,” he said. “I’m now physically, spiritually and emotionally free, and I know I can fully love myself because I know who I am.” After running for two weeks at the Old Auction House, the photographic exhibit has been shifted to the SCCH office in Kyneton, where it will stay on permanent display. The project was celebrated with a private opening where participants, project workers and friends and families were invited to view the works. Younger participant and Sunbury resident Brittany said it was valuable to hear of the experience of others. “I thought watching the other interviews that it turned out brilliantly,” she said. “How much people [in the past] had to lean on each other and the fact they didn’t have as many safe spaces. “My friends have had quite safe spaces in comparison.” Looking ahead, Mez said this project was just the beginning. We have learnt so much and we definitely want to do more intergenerational things,” she said. “We recognise the importance of creating connections between community members.” The photographs can be viewed at the SCCH office at 1 Caroline Chisholm Drive, Kyneton from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Out and about Penguins are popping up all over Altona beach during lockdown. The penguin sand sculptures are the creation of Melbourne Minor’s Kel Devoil. “I’ve been making these with my kids on our daily walk at Altona beach to cheer up people who see them,” she said. “Lockdown was getting us down and we thought it would be a fun way to lift all our spirits. We plan on making them all through lockdown.” Community members have since been adding their own sand sculptures along the beach.

Plan ahead and be road safe this long weekend Operation Regal 2021 is a state-wide Road Policing Operation over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend period. It aims to increase driver awareness and journey planning, while reducing road trauma during this high risk time on our roads. This four-day road policing enforcement campaign will run from Friday, June 11 to Monday, June 14, 2021. Road Policing Advisor Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol advises that the operation will be conducted throughout all operational police regions and police service areas, using all available personnel from local road policing units, general duties and other regional resources. Police will be targeting the main causes of lives lost and serious injuries in crashes: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint and seat belt non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug) Fatigue is one of the biggest killers and a major cause of the loss of life on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure they take at least a 15-minute break at least every two hours – simply don’t drive if tired. Sergeant Wallace says that road trauma isn’t just about the lives that are lost. “It’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones,” he says. “The entire community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.” RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings notes it has been demonstrated time after time that speed

is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained.

“And put your phone away where you can’t be tempted to use it - for example, in the glove box or in the boot to avoid being distracted.” Mr Giddings adds that the work of his group,

along with initiatives such as Operation Regal, will hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asks the community to report speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The first thing anyone commented about when they saw this week’s road test SUV – the Genesis GV80 – was its size: “It’s big isn’t it?”. Though it’s almost five metres long and two metres wide, which is large but not exceptionally so, it’s shaped to look bigger than it really is. Bigger is better is often a sales incentive in the SUV field.

Styling Bold is the first word that comes to mind. The front is totally dominated by a huge grille with headlight housings that seem to be a couple of sizes wider than they need to be. Funnily the lights aren’t all that large, it’s just the housings that make them look that way. The rear lights follow the style of the fronts and the tail has a bold centre section. The roof slopes sleekly to the rear and the side windows sweep upwards to give a streamlined look.

Interior Inside the bold look continues, but it has a good combination of upmarket class at the same time. Our test Genesis had a luxury package that includes quilted Nappa leather. It had suede on the pillars and dash as well as timber trim on the centre console. There’s space for three adults in the centre row seat, though it’s shaped for two individual seats, with the one in the middle being for occasional use only. The two outer rear seats can be adjusted electrically in the manner that we normally only associate with front seats. Given the size of the vehicle there’s less legroom than you would expect. The front seats are fine but if they’re set back for a tall driver there is barely enough kneeroom for those in the second row. Getting into the third row of seats isn’t easy because of the height of the vehicle off the ground. Again, there’s not as much legroom as we would like. There appears to be too much emphasis on boot space, which is positively cavernous, resulting in the aforementioned missing legroom. Perhaps it’s the sweeping style at the rear that has the third-row seats rather limited for headroom.

Infotainment The very wide infotainment and navigation screen is excellent and simple to see at a glance. Apple Car Play or Android Auto can be easily accessed. Sound comes from 21 Lexicon speakers and Quantum Logic surround sound technology. It is supported by a 14-channel high output external amplifier.

Engines / transmissions Our test vehicle was powered by a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine with 279 kW, and 530 Nm of torque the latter with a very wide spread from 1300 to 4500 rpm. So, the torque is in the rev range that’s being used virtually all the time in normal driving.

Safety When the driver uses the indicators to signal a change direction the speedometer or tacho shows a picture taken by an outside camera of what’s beside and behind the Genesis at that time. We found ourselves still using the door mirrors, but with more time in the driver’s seat we might come to rely only on the pictures and keep our eyes on the road ahead. There’s not only advanced collision avoidance if other drivers make a mistake, but also a feature that stops you making a driving error. Try to change lanes into another vehicle and it prevents you from doing so by using the brakes or not replying to your steering. Obviously, you can still get into trouble, but the big Genesis does its best to save you. It almost goes without saying that the GV80 has been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

SPORT Funding plea goes to Parliament By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition to federal Parliament is calling for a review of funding for sports projects including Williamstown Football Club’s $4 million facility project. Works at Downer Oval, aka Williamstown Cricket Ground, were deemed crucial to cater for the state league, female participants and community users. The club is using a storage area as a gym for its Williamstown players and has been hiring portable rooms (with no toilets, showers or medical /property rooms) to house VFL and VFLW teams on match days. The petition, being promoted by Federal Labor, states: “The ‘Sports Rorts’ saga surrounding the 2018 Community Sport Infrastructure grant program lead to the Senate Select Committee on Administration of Sports Grants”. “The recommendations … included that ‘the Australian government immediately fund in full all projects that were assessed

as meritorious and recommended by Sport Australia, but dismissed in the final ministerial funding decisions.’ “We therefore ask the House to immediately fund in full all projects that were assessed as meritorious.' The state government last month allocated $1 million in its 2021-22 budget to upgrade change rooms, training and administration facilities at Downer Oval.

Williamstown Football Club chief executive Jason Reddick said the project would enable Hobsons Bay’s premier sporting oval to cater for state league football games as well as community football users. “Following the Hobsons Bay City Council’s investment into the ground surface we have a great ground to play on, however we now need the accompanying infrastructure to cater for the females, umpires and various community users groups that can be fixtured to play at Downer Oval,” he said. “As the facility project requires $4 million to complete, we are now looking to the federal government to support the project with funding, knowing that Sport Australia has previously assessed and recommended our project for federal funding,” he said. “The recent state government budget announcement to commit $1 million to our facility project is fantastic news that reflects the state government’s recognition of what these facilities are going to deliver, and we are thrilled that in a tight budget they’ve actually

found a way to provide us with some funding. “We’re now going through the process of seeing what we can do with that $1 million state government funding plus a further $200,000 facility contribution that we have remaining from the AFL. However we’re also looking for further funding support from the federal government to reach the full potential of the whole project.” Federal Gellibrand MP Tim Watts took to social media to urge people to get behind the petition. “Sport Australia independently assessed Williamstown Football Club’s application for funding to support the construction of women’s change room facilities at Downer Oval and rated it highly enough to be funded,” he posted. “Then the minister intervened (after dozens of emails with the Prime Minister’s office) and over-ruled this assessment. “Sign this petition to tell Scott Morrison to repair the damage and fund deserving clubs like Williamstown Football Club!”

Footscray hockey hits its Strapp Footscray has appointed Tim Strapp as it’s new Hockey Victoria premier league men’s coach, while Alex Shirley will embark on his first season coaching the women’s side. Strapp will also be the junior director of coaching for the next four years. The current Victorian Institute of Sport women’s hockey and HC Melbourne coach replaces Jarrod Lester. “I haven’t coached men’s premier league for a few years now, so it’s been really good getting back into coaching men again,” Strapp said. “To have the opportunity to coach a good men’s team, which Footscray are, it’s a really good challenge. “Two years ago, when they were in the last full season, they were in the grand final so they’re a reasonably strong side. “I’d be hoping that we’d be pushing finals

again this year, with the hope of going pretty deep in the finals, but we’ve had a few injuries recently and we need to get healthy again before we can merge back in with a number of the boys.” Shirley, who replaces Lachie Anderson, was appointed last year but will embark on his first season this year after COVID-19 grounded last year’s season. After playing with Essendon’s state league 1 team from 1999-2013 (winning two premierships), Shirley coached the Essendon Ladies premier squad from 2014-16 making the finals and one grand final each year. He was recently within the Bulldog’s coaching structures as assistant to men’s coach Phil Merriman in 2017 and 2018. Among those he will be coaching at Footscray Hockey Club is his wife, Anna Burns, who has represented Victoria at all levels.

“There’s been a lot of change,” Shirley said of the women’s side. “The last season they played they made the grand final side, then there’s been 17 players, I think, leave for various reasons – some taking up scholarships in America, some being offered scholarships in other clubs within Melbourne. “So, we’ve had a significant change in players from that side but maintaining a really good group of core players. “We’re looking to make the finals but at the moment we’re still trying to find out what sort of team we are with all the changes. “My hopes as the team leadership coach is to make the finals in at least one final, which would be really positive with the number of changes we’ve had.”

Jordan Boyd has achieved his AFL dream, the hard way. Having started his football with Spotswood before joining Footscray VFL, Boyd now finds himself a Carlton player after being taken at pick 20 in last week’s mid-season rookie draft. Boyd’s journey to the top level is different from most. He was never part of the Western Jets and the talent pathway growing up and has only ever played two representative games. But his form with Footscray in the VFL put him on the radar of AFL clubs, and the rest is history. Boyd told Carlton media that he thought he had made it by playing local football at Spotswood. “Then I was fortunate enough to get a gig at Footscray [in 2019] and thought that I’d really like to try and push even higher,” he said. Boyd has played every game for the Bulldogs this season. Yet he said he is as surprised as anyone to be drafted. “It’s pretty insane. I never thought that it would really happen to be honest. It still hasn’t quite sunk in yet: It’s been a hell of a day and a bit so it’s still pretty surreal to me,” he said. “I was in my room just watching it online and my family were in the main room just watching it. “I wasn’t really paying too much attention around pick No.20 because I was pretty nervous, and then I just heard dad start yelling out and I looked down and my name was there.” Carlton list manager Nick Austin highlighted Boyd’s penetrating kick and vision as just the start of his abilities. He said his ability to adapt to new roles was also impressive. “He impressed straight away with his attack on the ball, his ability to make things happen and just his attitude.” “He showed us something that we hadn’t seen and we know what he can do as a mid-forward, which is where we think he’ll land at the Carlton side.” Tara Murray
