Proud history shared By Alesha Capone World War II veteran Pu Bordy Weeku, who celebrated his 101st birthday last month, is described by those closest to him as a spiritual and kind man. As Bordy, as he is known, speaks little English, his son Eh Htoo Saw, and Say Htoo, who is related to the family, translated his story for Star Weekly. In 1937, at the age of 17, Bordy – a member of the Karen people of Myanmar – joined the British Army in Burma, as it was then known. He was too young to train with guns, so the army taught him to play the trumpet. Bordy, now a Wyndham Vale resident, became a bugler and would wake the troops at dawn every day with music. Eh Htoo Saw said one of his father’s strongest memories of WWII was the three months he and other soldiers spent marching 3000 kilometres from Burma to Karachi in British India – now Pakistan. “He always talked about the very tough journey,” he said. Eh Htoo Saw said his father, who became a Lance Corporal, once had a lucky escape after an underwater torpedo fired at his ship by the Japanese failed to explode. Bordy met his wife Poday while she was serving as a nanny for a British officer. The pair had five children. One of their children was stillborn and another died as a young child. Poday died in 1953. During the 1980s, Eh Htoo Saw and Bordy became refugees, as the Karen were targeted by the Burmese Army for remaining loyal to the British during WWII. Eh Htoo Saw said that while living in a refugee camp, his father would clean the church and ring the church bell. In 2007, Eh Htoo Saw and Bordy were granted refuge in Australia. They moved to Wyndham, where Bordy met Richard Dove, from the Wyndham Community & Education Centre, at a Karen New Year celebration. Mr Dove invited Bordy to attend the Werribee RSL Sub-branch’s Anzac Day parade. He has since attended the Anzac Day march every year, under the banner of the Karen-British Alliance. Eh Htoo Saw said his father “was so happy and proud” to participate in the annual parade. However, he said that due to his father’s age and health, he was not likely to attend an Anzac service this weekend.

$35m plant to boost recycling By Goya Dmytryshchak Privately-owned packaging and recycling company Visy will build a $35 million glass recycling centre at Laverton, paving the way for a Victorian container deposit scheme. The upgrade to the Dohertys Road centre is expected to create 92 jobs during construction and six ongoing positions once built. The state government said it has invested more than $515 million to deliver the biggest ever transformation and reform of Victoria’s waste and recycling industry, encouraging investment and growth in the sector. A separate glass recycling service is being introduced across Victoria to reduce contamination in the other recycling streams like paper, cardboard and plastic.

Schedule in some culture Comedy stars, chorales and concerts are scheduled for the Wyndham Cultural Centre, which has reopened following a hiatus due to COVID-19. More than 12 shows featuring local and international acts are planned for the next two months. The Wyndham Art Gallery will also be open between 11am to 4pm from April 23 to 25, giving visitors a last chance to see the exhibition FLUID featuring LQBTQI+ artists from across Australia. Wyndham’s creative city portfolio holder, Cr Marcel Mahfoud, said the council was thrilled the centre and gallery have opened their doors to the public again. “Wyndham Cultural Centre is one of our city’s most iconic venues and is where the arts come to life in Wyndham,” Cr Mahfoud said. “The centre is a place of expression and creativity and enables residents to engage in quality art and cultural events.” On Saturday, May 1, famous comedian Jimeoin will bring his show Turn it Up! to the centre. A theatrical experience titled Grace Under Pressure will be staged on Tuesday, May 4. The show, based on interviews with doctors and nurses about their experiences of training and working in hospitals, is described as a “surprising, intimate, and deeply moving theatre experience that reveals these hidden stories of health professionals in their own words”. On Friday, May 14, theatre show The Merge’r – which is also an Australian feature film – starring comedian and actor Damian Callinan will come to the centre. The show is about life in Bodgy Creek, a township that has seen better days, where a coach tries to save the local football club. Later in the month, singer and pianist Tim Freedman from the band The Whitlams, will present his Man About a Dog Tour’on Friday, May 28 at 7.30pm. Freedman will tell stories, plus play past hits and tracks from The Whitlams’ forthcoming album, which is due for release later this year. On June 1, the Spooky Men’s Chorale will perform at the cultural centre. Wyndham council will run an Energy Smart Homes program designed to help residents save money on household energy. The initiative will run as part of the council’s Green Living Series, an annual calendar of events aimed at providing participants with skills and tips to live a little greener. Wyndham’s climate futures and environment portfolio holder, Cr Robert Szatkowski, said: “With this program, no matter what your budget is, you can make changes in your home to reduce your energy, save money and act on climate change”. “During April and May, we will be running workshops and providing information on the latest government grants and incentives to support households in reducing their energy use and saving money. “The program will also take you through topics such as understanding your energy bills and monitoring your energy use, low and medium-cost home upgrades and solar and battery use.” The council will host an online event titled ‘Understanding your energy bills, rebates and monitoring’, on Wednesday, April 28 from 7-8.30pm. Another internet workshop, ‘Reducing your energy use without spending a cent’, will be hosted by Jo Taranto, from the Good for the Hood social enterprise start-up, on Thursday, May 6 from 7-8pm. Cash call to help population boom By Alesha Capone As Wyndham’s population continues to soar, the council has called on the state and federal governments to invest more funding into local education, roads and public transport. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recently released its Estimated Resident Population report, which showed that Wyndham’s population grew by 4.7 per cent – or 12,687 new residents – to reach 283,294 people in 2020, despite the coronavirus pandemic and reduced immigration.
Wyndham was home to 270,607 residents in 2019. According to the ABS figures, Wyndham experienced the largest population increase in the state. City of Casey in Melbourne’s south-east was second, with 10,638 new residents. Mayor Adele Hegedich said Wyndham’s fast-growing population was one of the reasons it needed greater investment from the state and federal governments. “Our population has already boomed, and we can’t sit idle while our population continues to grow at such a fast rate,” Cr Hegedich said.
She said the council would like the government to fund four new Regional Rail Link stations at Sayers, Black Forest and Davis roads and Truganina. “Wyndham is also seeking funding for stage one of Wyndham Westlink, which would include construction of a four-lane Ison Road bridge over the railway line, the duplication of Ballan Road and other key road projects.” Cr Hegedich also called on the state government to fund more schools. “More than 100 babies are currently being born each week in Wyndham, which means we
need to plan for at least three new classrooms every week just to keep pace,” she said. A state government spokesperson said: “We’re investing like never before in our west, especially in the Wyndham community … and making unprecedented investments in infrastructure, education and health – initiatives that Victorians voted for”. The state has invested $1.5 billion in the Footscray Hospital and the construction of a new community hospital Point Cook; $75 million for planning for the Western Rail Plan; and an $1.8 billion Western Roads upgrade package.

Laverton’s Block Party returns next month after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In partnership with Woods Street Arts Space, Laverton P-12 College students have been working with renowned artist and costume designer Anna Kolusniewski to create costumes and sculptures from recycled materials. The students will showcase their works in a fashion parade at the Block Party and an exhibition titled Recycled Wasteland at the Woods Street Arts Space. Kolusniewski said 28 students in years 10 and 11 had been involved in making
The Lawrie Emmins Reserve in Laverton North and Wyndham Cultural Centre will share in $4.5 million funding from the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said the government would provide Wyndham council with $1.5 million towards a youth precinct and gateway, including a skate park, at the reserve. The precinct will also include a large plaza with seating, barbecue and picnic facilities, outdoor exercise equipment, outdoor basketball and netball courts, lawn areas, public toilets and car parking. Ms Connolly said Lawrie Emmins Reserve was a fantastic open space for young people to enjoy. “This revamp will ensure it will be for many years to come,” she said. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the council would receive $3 million to upgrade the Wyndham Cultural Centre in Werribee. The creative hub will be relaunched as the Wyndham Arts Centre, including a refurbished 497-seat auditorium, a 200-seat black box theatre and a new gallery space. “I’m delighted the Victorian government has continued its support for our thriving community with these significant investments – the arts centre is a really exciting project to take place in Werribee,” Mr Pallas said. Local Government Minister Shaun Leane said that since its establishment in 2015, the Growing Suburbs Fund has resulting in $913.2 million of local infrastructure built in Melbourne’s fastest-growing areas.

Witness appeal Four people, including two children, were injured in a two-car collision in Tarneit about 8.30am last Wednesday. The accident, at the intersection of Tarneit and Sayers roads, resulted in a five-month-old, a two-year-old, a 24-year-old woman and a 31-year-old woman being taken to hospital. Market makes the grade A market that offers plus size clothing that is ethically and environmentally conscious is coming to Werribee. A Plus market creator Erin Cox has made the market the only regularly available market for plus sized women, and said it was born out of her own need. “I wanted to shop for affordable, environmentally-friendly, and ethically-produced products,” Ms Cox said. “I found it wasn’t available … so I made it. “[There have] been on and off events for plus size of environmental focus … but we’re the only ones that run regularly and at this scale.” Ms Cox said the response to the “bargains galore” market since it first ran in 2013 has been “overwhelming”. “We had a lot of people really excited about
it on our first day, and a lot of those people still come. “People find the place to be a safe and accepting place to be … we attract other marginalised groups, such as LGBTQI+, which is excellent.” The market showcases “pre-loved” clothing, along with clothing from local designers. Designer from BeKeane healthy and fit Brenda Keane said said she loves the A Plus market as it provides a great opportunity to broaden her customer base. “The A Plus market provides an opportunity for people to look, feel and try to see how it feels and fits,” she said. Police are investigating after a group of people assaulted a man as he walked towards the carpark at Wyndham Vale train station about 7pm last Tuesday. The victim, a 48-year-old Manor Lakes man, was not injured. The man alerted protective services officers at the station, who patrolled the area for the offenders, but no arrests were made.
Reserve lighting Lighting poles have been installed at a Wootten Road Reserve oval to allow the Tarneit Titans Football Club and others to use the ground for night training. Wyndham council contributed $276,000 to the project and the state government provided $196,000. The council has also installed eight new park bench seats along the perimeter of Hummingbird Reserve in Tarneit. Dawn service cancelled Werribee RSL Sub-branch will not host an official Anzac Day dawn service for the public on Sunday, but will send a small delegation to the Station Street cenotaph for an unofficial ceremony. Sub-branch manager John Kot said the RSL had started planning a COVIDSafe 2021 Anzac event with Wyndham council and other groups earlier this year, but the five-day lockdown in February had “curtailed” the preparations. Mr Kot said the sub-branch and council had all made “a mutual decision” not to go ahead with a public event. He said that COVIDSafe government requirements which went with planning a public event for up to thousands of attendees would have created a “logistical nightmare” for organisers of the dawn service, which usually attracts between 5000 and 8000 people. “Because of those vast numbers, everyone who wanted to attend would have had to pre-register,” Mr Kot said. He said the event would also have needed muster points, ID checks for all attendees and one exit and entry point. Mr Kot said an “unofficial small gathering” of RSL representatives would meet at the Werribee cenotaph to lay a wreath, about 6am. He said if members of the public felt comfortable to attend the Werribee cenotaph on the day and obeyed requirements such as social distancing, they would not be turned away. “If you didn’t feel comfortable, I’d advise people to do what they did last year and stand in their driveways,” Mr Kot said. Mr Clifton said he enjoyed seeing children attending the badge stalls with their parents and asking questions about Anzac Day. “It’s not all about the money, although that is very important as we use it for our welfare program,” he said. The RAAF base at Point Cook will also not host a public service on Anzac Day.
Executive officer of the Point Cook RAAF base, Squadron Leader Jason Wirth, said COVID restrictions prevented the community from taking part in this year’s service. “The plan this year is to have a small local group of defence members, and commemorate appropriately as allowed under COVID requirements.”

Residents to hire town planner By Alesha Capone A group of Werribee residents concerned about a Wedge Street development have launched an online fundraising campaign to hire a town planner to argue their case at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The GoFundMe page has raised $1100 so far to help fight the construction of three double-storey units at 34 Wedge Street South, each with four-bedrooms and a single car garage. The development, which attracted 28
objections about its impacts on neighbourhood character and heritage and increased traffic and on-street parking, was approved by Wyndham council in December. Residents have appealed the council’s decision to VCAT. The appeal is set for mediation in May and a hearing in August. A town planner has agreed to present on their behalf at VCAT for whatever amount they raise through the GoFundMe campaign. Residents Kristey Bradley and Neil Gilbee said the plans for 34 Wedge Street South showed the three dwellings would look like
“stacked shipping containers”. “Our complaint isn’t with the developer, it’s more the council allowing the developer to put a development out of character with the area,” Mr Gilbee said. Ms Bradley said residents would prefer the development to be single-storey and have a pitched roof rather than flat roof. The existing house at 34 Wedge Street South will be demolished if the development proceeds. The house has been listed in a review of gaps in Wyndham council’s heritage records, as part
of a precinct “characterised by 1920s bungalows and 1930s houses” but the council has not yet formally recognised it under a heritage overlay. A town planning submission and compliance statement submitted to the council, along with the Wedge Street South plans, stated that “the proposed development is generally consistent with the neighbourhood character”. A Wyndham council spokesperson said: “As the matter is currently before VCAT, it would be inappropriate to comment further”. Housing project begins A $30 million, 74-home social and affordable housing development will be built in Werribee. Werribee MP Tim Pallas and Housing Minister Richard Wynne helped turn the sod at the site of the Cottrell Street development last Thursday. The project, a partnership between the state government and social housing provider Unison, will create 50 new jobs. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2022. The development has been funded by the state government’s Building Works package, which was announced in May last year. Under the package, $498 million has been allocated to repair, upgrade and construct more than 23,000 social housing units across Victoria. “These projects are providing new and improved housing for people in our community as well as valuable employment for
local job seekers and businesses hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic,” Mr Pallas said. Once the Cottrell Street complex is built, support services will be provided on-site by Jesuit Social Services and Bolton Clarke’s Homeless Person’s Program, in collaboration with Unison and the Wyndham Health Housing and Homelessness (H3) Alliance. In October last year, Star Weekly reported that Unison had purchased the Cottrell Street site to build social and affordable housing on. Unison’s chief executive James King said the development would “provide much-needed social housing for people who are homeless and affordable housing for people who are employed but on a low income”. “This new development has been designed with a focus on renters’ wellbeing, safety and quality of life,” Mr King said. Luxury home sets record By Alesha Capone A five-bedroom house in Sanctuary Lakes has set a new residential property price record for Point Cook after selling for $2.7 million. Sanctuary Lakes, Point Cook and Wyndham Residential Real Estate agencies director Fadi Saad said 22 Greg Norman Drive took about one week to sell. Mr Saad said the house was purchased by a local who had been searching for their “dream house” for years. The house boasts golf course views, five bathrooms, a formal lounge room, a swimming pool and basketball court. The previous record for Point Cook was $2.65 million, for 21 Greg Norman Drive, in 2017. The new record is likely to be broken soon with 19 Panorama Way, Sanctuary Lakes listed for an indicative selling price of between $3.3 to 3.5 million. On-the-job experience recognised The state government has honoured local businesses across Victoria for giving students vital on-the-job experience in the past year. Multiskills Training in Werribee was among a list of honourees recently acknowledged for helping local students. The company developed a package which allowed integration aids to accompany students to construction induction training. Healing through song By Alesha Capone Hope, faith and hard work have helped Wyndham man Dan Phipps turn his life around and achieve musical success. Phipps, a vocalist, musician and songwriter, said he played the trumpet in school and wrote rock and grunge music. However, becoming involved in drugs in his youth put a temporary halt to his hopes of becoming a professional musician. “For a long period, about 20 years, I was stuck in addiction and health issues,” he said. “Two years ago I hit rock bottom and ended up in hospital, I went to a rehab program from there. “Around 18 months ago, I started writing music again and taught myself to play guitar.” He has supported artists such as Tim Henwood from The Superjesus, Brian Mannix and the Androids and the Chantoozies. On May 1, Phipps will support Henwood in his Now & Then show at Bannockburn Railway Hotel. Phipps – who plays music at church every Sunday – has also recorded an EP, titled Shifting Sands, at Universal School of Music in Point Cook with the assistance of his mentor, producer Michel Kroll. The EP features his debut single, ‘Sweet Ocean View’, which has become the theme song for Australian surf company Dirty Lickings, of which Phipps is an ambassador. ‘Sweet Ocean View’ won last year’s Surf Coast Song Contest run by Art of The Minds. Earlier this month, Phipps’ first big show at Musicland in Fawkner sold out. “My ultimate dream would be to be a touring musician and get played on the likes of [radio

station] Triple J,” he said. Phipps, a father of three, said his favourite aspects of music were performing and writing. “I find it really quite healing, sitting down by myself writing songs,” he said. Phipps, who has written songs about his recovery from addiction, said he openly talked about his battle with drugs and mental health
on stage. “The dream is also to be a good role model to people and anyone with life-controlling issues or mental problems, and show them it is possible to follow your dreams,” he said. 5G comes to Point Cook Point Cook has become one of the first suburbs in Australia to gain access to 5G technology. Residents and business owners in the area can access faster, more reliable internet from the Optus 5G home broadband. 5G-enabled mobile devices will also be able to use the network on the go. Pledge to boost police numbers Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien has committed to increasing the number of police officers based in Wyndham if he wins the next Victorian election. Mr O’Brien visited the municipality last Tuesday at the invitation of Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn. The pair visited Point Cook’s town centre, farmers in Werribee South and Werribee Mercy Hospital. Mr Finn spoke of concerns related to youth gangs, hoons and thefts in Wyndham. sometimes could not attend crime scenes in a timely manner. In response, Mr O’Brien said he would increase the police presence in Wyndham if he is elected at the next state election, which is due to be held on or before November 26, 2022. He would also “bring forward” the timing of the Point Cook police station’s construction. The state government last year spent $4.5 million to buy a site on Point Cook Homestead Road for the future station. At a public question and answer session,
held in Point Cook, local advocate Dr Joe Garra asked Mr O’Brien if the opposition had plans for East Werribee, after state government plans to build a $31 billion education city there fell through. Mr O’Brien said he hoped the state government did not “flog off” the site for a housing development. A state government spokesperson said: the government has provided $45 million for design and construction of the Wyndham Police Complex in Werribee and funding for 100 new police officers in the Westgate
division, which covers Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay and Wyndham. “The City of Wyndham, which includes Point Cook, is serviced by a 24-hour police station in Werribee and a non-24-hour station in Wyndham North and residents should be in no doubt that they are well protected,“ the spokesperson said. The spokesperson said construction of the Point Cook police station’s “is currently being considered and will follow the same budget process that all police infrastructure funding allocations follow”.

Tributes flow for former cop By Alesha Capone Tributes are flowing for former Werribee policeman Ron Fenton, who died last week following a long battle with cancer. Ron’s son, who has been stuck overseas due to the coronavirus pandemic, posted on Facebook about his father’s death last Tuesday. His son, who also goes by the name Ron, wrote that his dad “was a hero to many – myself included”. Ron Fenton was well-known for many things, including his 40 years with Victoria Police, serving in the army reserve, his advocacy for people diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and his prolific volunteering. In 1984, Ron was shot in the head after pursuing a man who had murdered a security guard in Clayton. He was not expected to survive the night but he did. He later returned to duty, joining Werribee police in 1996. In recent years, Ron developed PTSD. He credited his assistance dog, a Labrador named Yogi, with helping to ease his nightmares and reliance on medication. About four years ago, Ron launched a legal
case against WorkSafe, Victoria Police and insurance company Gallagher Bassett, for refusing to fund the cost of Yogi’s food and veterinary bills. After receiving an out-of-court settlement in 2020, Ron told Star Weekly that the important thing was not the money, but that the case had set a legal precedent, which means that emergency services workers – who have a WorkCover-accepted PTSD claim related to their employment – will be able to claim expenses related to accredited assistance dogs. A service celebrating Ron’s life was held on Monday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, Ron and his family requested donations be made to K9s 4 Valour, a not-for-profit organisation which provides service dogs to emergency services workers with PTSD. Members of the Wyndham community also recently started a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money so that Ron could to fly to Spain to visit his granddaughter. The campaign raised $20,020, with more than 300 people donating to the cause. The money will now be donated to an organisation which trains PTSD-assistance dogs.

I was very saddened to hear of the recent passing of local legend Ron Fenton. Ron had touched so many people in Wyndham. MY WYNDHAM Trev Ryan’s family has lived in Werribee for three generations. He runs Dirt Road 4x4 & Autophix Australia in Werribee and is a long-time member of the Werribee District 4WD Club. He chats with Alesha Capone.
Are you involved with any community groups? I’ve sponsored the Werribee Angling Club and Werribee & District Collectable Vehicle Club. I’m really into Monaros, I have been into them for a long time. When I was 22, which was many years ago now, I had a Monaro. I’ve been in the Werribee District 4WD Club for a long, long time. I’ve been president three times, on the committee for about 11 years and
I’m the current trip co-ordinator. I’ve got a real passion for that – I’ve been all over Australia and I like going on track less travelled which others don’t see as much, because they don’t have a 4WD. You have a strong family connection to Werribee? My uncle Jack was the Australian singles champion in lawn bowls. My mum, Audrey, was a Hosking before she married. Mum’s family house where she grew up, is where Bridgestone is on the main street now, with the river at the back. My grandfather Gilbert was a local firefighter and electrician. Grandpa Hosking ran the old cinema, the Picture Palais, on Station Street. Mum was an usher and she was known for riding her bike everywhere. On the Ryan side, my grandfather was one of the first people in the RAAF and an aerial photographer. He received an MBE from the king, Queen Elizabeth’s father, for his service. What has changed in Werribee, since you were young? I’ve always lived in Werribee. Everything’s changed – some things not really for the better. I remember when Heaths Road was a dirt road. I remember the old bluestone ford (near Werribee River), which goes back a long time. I think the council has made some mistakes along the way, all the estates going up along Ballan Road.

How did you start out in the business? I lost my dad in 2018 and I took some time off. I felt that I’d made a lot of money for a lot of people and moving forward, I wanted to do something for myself. I opened the shop in December, I’d been operating as a home-based business since the February before that. Unfortunately, COVID really killed us as a business. I had invested a lot of money in the business but COVID came almost straight away, so I couldn’t get out and do what I do best, which is selling and being on the road. I’m the national distributor of Autophix Australia, that’s how I started (with this business). You had to sell a lot of stock, so I was stuck with $60,000 of goods when COVID hit. I thought I’d diversify and I had been dabbling in 4WDs for a bit, after being involved with 4x4s for more than 20 years. I have a friend who does camper trailers, Goldfields Campers, and I had a shed, so we teamed up for that side of the business. We really market to tourers. Not getting people through the door here is a big problem, so every waking hour I find that I’m on social media and selling online. My customers are Australia-wide, but I’d love more locals.
Would you like to add anything else? I have two beautiful daughters, one is a triple-0 call taker and the other is at university.

Surrounded by beauty Point Cook photographer and poet Pranay Lodhiya says he enjoys “finding beauty in the worst situation”, writes Alesha Capone.
T
he chief financial officer at the Bureau of Meterology started going on early-morning runs when working from home during last year’s coronavirus pandemic lockdowns. Lodhiya said, while on these runs, the feeling of being alone with his thoughts and music was a great way to start the day – like a “meditative space”. Listening to audio books also inspired him to think about “self-awareness and the internal challenges everyone goes through”. “It’s been part of the way to centre myself, rather than rushing all the time,” he said. “I was one of those people who struggled to work from home, at first.” During his exercise routine, Lodhiya began taking photos of sunrises on his phone. He later picked up his DSLR camera to catch the morning scenes in all their glory, as well as sunsets and moonscapes during evening walks. “The photography, post-editing and all that was a very meditative state for me,” Lodhiya said. The many stunning images he captured of Point Cook and its surrounds during the pandemic showcase the beauty of the lonely landscapes and natural world. Lodhiya said he started posting his photographs in the Point Cook Residents Facebook group last year, as a way to bring cheer to others during the lockdowns. “I received a lot of love and encouragement from the group,” Lodhiya said. He is now publishing a book of the images and his poems, titled Lockdown – A Poetographic Journey Though My Eyes. Lodhiya says there are more than 100 photographs in the book, alongside about 50 poems. “For me, it is a way to express what I was thinking in different situations,” he said. Many of the photos in the book were taken in the Cheetham Wetlands, including views from a bridge in the coastal park. A particularly striking picture features drops of melting frost, hanging from the bridge’s railings, against the sunrise. Another image shows tree branches at the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Course silhouetted against a colourful sky. “Trees that don’t look like anything spectacular

on their own, against the sunset, look amazing,” Lodhiya said. He described other images of weeds and barbed wire as “like finding beauty in the worst situation”. Lodhiya said the book’s cover photo, of a bench where he would finish his runs (pictured top right), was especially meaningful to him. “The book was truly a labour of love for me, the fact that people actually appreciate it and have brought it is amazing,” Lodhiya said. “The fact that I can put a smile on someone’s face, is very humbling.” He has donated $10 from each of the first 100 copies sold to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, where he previously volunteered. Lodhiya thanked his publisher Samantha and her team for being “fantastic” and helping to find an Australian printer for the book. Schools can be found by typing in a residential address or searching by school name. Findmyschool will show the zone for the current enrolment year and the 2022 enrolment year. Every child has the right to enrol at their designated neighbourhood government school or, if there is capacity, at another government school of their choice. No student currently enrolled in a school will be required to change schools. When the site was launched in 2019, it was the first time school zones were easily accessible in one place. Acting Premier and Minister for Education James Merlino said the updated
website includes school zones for the 14 new schools and campuses opening in 2022. “We will deliver 100 new government schools by 2026 and when a new school opens, the zones around nearby schools have to change to accommodate it,” Mr Merlino said. “The website takes the guesswork out of identifying their closest government school, giving families the clarity they need when deciding which school to enrol their child in.” In the past five years, the government has invested more than $9 billion in more than 1600 school upgrades – creating more than 10,000 construction jobs – and is now ahead of schedule on its commitment to open 100 new schools by 2026, with 48 new schools opening between 2019 and 2022. Ingredients 125g unsalted butter 200g chocolate buttons 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 cup caster sugar 1 cup plain flour 1 tsp baking powder Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C and line a 20cm x 31cm baking tray with foil and spray with cooking spray. 2. In a small saucepan, melt butter and chocolate over a low heat. Once melted, add eggs and vanilla essence and beat to combine. 3. Add sugar, flour and baking powder, stir well to combine then pour into the baking tray. 4. Bake for 30 minutes. 5. 1. Cut the bottom off the stockings. Keep a toe piece about 20cm long. 2. Shake some lawn seed into the toe of the stocking. 3. Stuff the stocking with moss, sawdust or potting mix until it’s about the size of a tennis ball. 4. Close the bottom with a rubber band. 5. Give your grass head a face using craft items, waterproof markers and anything else you like. Use rubber bands to create bubbles for a nose and ears. 6. Fill the cup with water and put the head upside-down on the cup, so the top is just sitting in the water. 7. Turn the head up the right way and sit it in a well-lit spot, out of direct sunlight. 8. Keep the top damp over the next few days (a spray with a water bottle is fine). 9. After about a week, grass shoots will start to sprout out of the top of the head. Nicholas wins championships Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club hosted some of the best all-ability golfers in the nation last week, for the annual two-day Victoria Inclusive Championships. Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club manager Shaun Bakker, who also played in the championships, said: “It’s great to see competitors merging together at our club for such an event. “Events like this provide us players with a goal and feed our drive to be successful and to succeed not only in golf but in life.” Bakker said the club prided itself on being an inclusive facility, and leads the way in providing all-ability golf programs and pathways in Melbourne’s west. “If you have ever thought of playing golf but weren’t sure if you could, please come see our all-ability coaches at our academy who will show you that it is most certainly possible,” he said. Defending Victoria Inclusive Championships champion Cam Pollard was leading the field on Thursday, after the first round of the event. Pollard fired 75 to lead by one stroke over fellow New South Wales players Geoff Nicholas and Lochie Smith, who each carded 76 after the first round on Thursday, which was played in windy and winter-like conditions. “The conditions were brutal and it’s easy to rack up big numbers on the card if you miss greens in the wrong place,” Bakker said. Nicholas went on to win the competition. Golf Australia operations general manager Therese Magdulski said all-abilities events were popular with competitors at the traditional

SPORT City West Falcons raring to get back on court After the longest pre-season ever, the City West Falcons will take to the court this week in the Victorian Netball League. The Falcons, like all other teams in the competition, spent last year on the sidelines due to COVID-19. While there was no netball, Falcons coach Marg Lind said they still did a lot of work behind the scenes. “It’s a weird feeling,” she said of preparing for their round one match. “The pre-season was the largest on record. We did a full year on Zoom, with three online fitness sessions a week. “We got the Altona Netball Association involved, with all the young kids doing it as well. It kept the club going and together and kept the team spirit together.” The core group of the Falcons’ 2020 squad has returned, but the team had a couple of key departures. Molly Jovic and Jacqui Newton have both secured contracts with
Collingwood’s Super Netball team and won’t be with the Falcons this season. Maggie Lind has also signed on with the Magpies as a training partner. Nicole Richardson, a long-time coach with the Falcons, is the Magpies new head coach. Marg Lind said they expected to see Maggie at the Falcons throughout the season. She said having the three players involved in Super Netball is good recognition for the club. “It’s very pleasing,” she said. “These girls deserved opportunities a long time ago. “We’re stoked and it reflects well on the club.” Lind said an expansion of the second-tier Australian Netball League competition, with Collingwood Magpies and Tasmania now fielding separate teams, meant more players could gain opportunities at a higher level. She said Jane Cook, the tallest goaler in Australia, was one player who should be getting
opportunities at ANL level. For the Falcons, Cook, Sarah Szczykulski, Zoe Davies, Maddi Gray and Tee Salanoa are among the key players returning. Montana Holmes has come across from Ariels and will fill the void in the midcourt left by the departure of Jovic. Rising star Melissa Oloamanu will step into the defensive end, while Emma Walters has been promoted into the championship side. Lind said the Falcons would again have some good young talent across all three sides. “We have 13 players in the state squads for the under-17s and under-19s,” she said. “Our 19s are raw, but showing a lot of potential. If we keep them at the club, we’re in a good spot for the future.” She said the Falcons had their sights set on playing finals this year. Tara Murray

By Tara Murray Altona continued its strong start to the Western Region Football League division 1 season with a win against Hoppers Crossing on Saturday. After a first-up win against Point Cook, the Vikings overcame a slow start against the Warriors to win 15.5 (95) – 7.6 (48). The Vikings looked in trouble early, with the home team kicking five first quarter goals. But after quarter-time it was all Vikings, kicking 13 goals to two. Mitchell Norton and Mitchell Van Den Berg kicked three goals each for the Vikings, with Sean Tighe named their best. Nathan Williams was the standout for the Warriors. The Vikings are one of three undefeated teams after two rounds, along with Werribee Districts and Caroline Springs. Werribee Districts defeated Point Cook 27.15 (177)–3.5 (23). The Tigers kept the Bulldogs goalless in the first half, as they piled on 12 goals of their own. The pain kept coming with the Tigers kicking another 15 goals in the second half. Trent Lee kicked six goals in a best-on-ground performance, with Dillon Viojo-Rainbow among the standouts. Lochlan Allen was best for Point Cook. Caroline Springs followed a round one victory over Deer Park with a win against Yarraville Seddon Eagles. The Lakers started the better of the two teams, but the Eagles hung on and were just 15 points down at three-quarter-time. A seven goal to two last quarter for the Lakers sealed the 14.14 (98) – 8.5 (53) win. Jy Lambley kicked four goals for the Lakers, with Lewis Tudor continuing his good form. Deer Park capped off a special day with its first win of the season. The Lions were finally able to unveil their 2019 premiership flag, the seventh in their incredible premiership run. They defeated Spotswood 11.8 (74) – 9.9 (63), having trailed by eight points at three-quartertime. Scott Greenhough was the standout for the Lions. Nicolas Aleksovski and Lachlan Smart kicked three goals each in the win. The loss leaves Spotswood sitting 0-2 for the first time in nearly 40 years. In the other match, St Albans opened its account against Sunshine. It was a low-scoring match, with just four goals on the board at half-time. St Albans dominated the third quarter to take control of the game. While the Kangaroos fought back in the last it wasn’t enough, with the Saints winning 7.16

The untapped brilliance of General Dodge was unleashed at Geelong on Saturday night and within a couple of stunning strides Parwan trainer Mick Chircop’s hard-luck horse reminded of his top-tier talent. The eight-year-old Courage Under Fire gelding, who was bred by Alabar Farms to Sheza Keeper, was having only his 18th trip to the race track but delivered his 13th win, with Jason Lee unleashing his exceptional speed at each end of the TAB Captain Sandy Free For All. “He’s had such limited racing and usually it’s hard to go out against a field like that,” Lee told Trots Vision. “His preparation has been very limited and he did it with absolute ease.” It was the headliner on a night full of headlines at Geelong, including Riley Butt steering his first Victorian winner for dad Tim; Big Jack Hammer returning to the winners’ list over Tornado Valley; two-year-old filly Irish Black Label stamping herself one to watch on debut; and then Teetreetommy boxed home brilliantly to salute for Mick Barby and Anne-Maree Conroy. And that doesn’t even include James Herbertson’s rare double, clipping Geelong’s mile record with Steel Screens in the fifth (1:53.5) and then smashing it in the last with Honolua Bay (1:51.9). But it’s General Dodge whose name will be most uttered around water coolers this week and he certainly had Lee buzzing post-race. “I was pretty excited when I got the opportunity to drive him in the trials and was then offered the drive on him race night,” Lee said. “Always watched him from afar and thought he was very good. “I always said Chilli Palmer, I only got to drive him once, was probably the quickest horse [I’d driven] for point-to-point speed, but I think this guy’s definitely probably got him. He’s freakish what he can do within 50 metres.” It was a stunning performance for a horse who hadn’t raced since February last year and was having only his third start since June 2018, gifting trainer Chircop some reward for perseverance. Werribee suffers tough first-up loss By Tara Murray Excitement was aplenty at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, as Werribee took to the field for the first time in more than 600 days. After no Victorian Football League action last year due to COVID-19, players and spectators were eagerly awaiting the bounce of the ball against Collingwood in the new-look competition. Werribee put in a determined performance, but was left to pay for poor execution in the 10.9 (69) - 9.8 (62) loss. It was the Magpies who jumped out of the gates early and led by two goals at the first break. The margin remained the same at half-time. Werribee pegged the margin back to a point at the last break but a lapse early in the last quarter proved costly and would ultimately decide the game. Werribee coach Michael Barlow said they were made to pay for not playing a full 120 minutes. “It was a slow start from us, and in the last quarter when we revved up and we thought we were ready to go, we lapsed for five or six minutes and gave Collingwood a couple [of goals]. “They held the lead and we were scrapping and clawing to get back into it. We had our chances. “The pressure is what playing an AFL-aligned club provides, we knew that was coming and there were some key moments where we lapsed. “There were some poorer decisions than we would have liked and we let Collingwood back into the game, off our own doing essentially.” Barlow said those poor decisions and execution were something they would work on at training throughout the week. Despite the loss, Barlow saw plenty of positives against a side which had plenty of AFL experience. “We had our chances, which was pleasing. We walked away with a real opportunity to win,” he said. “In all the KPI’s, we put a lot of green up [ticked a lot of boxes].

“When you put a lot of green up at the end of the day a lot has gone right, execution and key decisions we will have to address and look at and we’ll get better playing games. “Our midfielders stood up and got the ball … We won the clearances and the contested ball, it was just a bit of polish in the end and grabbing onto some opportunities. “A lot of our guys essentially haven’t played footy for over 600 days.” Matthew Hanson was the most prolific for Werribee, with 28 disposals, while Tom Gribble contributed 27. Wylie Buzza kicked four goals on debut for Werribee. He was one of eight players to pull on the Werribee jumper for the first time. Barlow said Buzza looked likely every time the ball was in the air. Among the eight players making their debut for Werribee, were three making their VFL debut. “Jay Dahlhaus had some moments,” Barlow said. “Lucas Rocci is just a competitor who hates to lose and Jesse Clark got given a really good job against an experienced 10-year AFL player and got the result, his side of the ledger. “That was pleasing.”
Louis Pinnuck said it was good to finally get back on the field in front of their fans. He said the guys were frustrated and disappointed about the loss. “When push comes to shove they had a bit more polish than us,” he said. “In the midfield in the first half, it was a really contested game and not much open footy at all. “We turned the ball over a fair bit coming outside 50 which didn’t help at all. We’ll work on our skills during the week, work on that polish.” Werribee’s task doesn’t get any easier this week, as it faces Williamstown under lights on Saturday night at Avalon Airport Oval.
