Kruze 4 Kids is a car show and family day held on Good Friday to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

The event was the brainchild of Bradley Radclyffe, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at seven years of age, and spent much of his childhood as a patient at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Over the years, Bradley suffered from a myriad of health complications, before he died in January 2020.

Bradley had a passion for all things motorsport and wanted to create an event that captured his love of cars and to give back to the hospital that he held close to his heart. Bradley’s dad Alan Radclyffe said he was proud to be continuing his son’s legacy.

“Kruze 4 Kids is much more than just a car show. It is also a fantastic family day out,” he said.

Kruze 4 Kidz has helped to raise more than $100,000 for the Good Friday Appeal since the event began 10 years ago. Kruze 4 Kidz will be on April 2 at Langama Park, 10am-4pm. Gold coin donation for entry.

Soil plan approved, again

By Jessica Micallef Toxic soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project is a step closer to being dumped in Bulla.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approved waste management and recycling company Hi-Quality’s second Environment Management Plan (EMP) earlier this month.

The decision paves the way for Hi-Quality to receive PFAS and asbestos-contaminated soil at the Sunbury Eco-Hub on Sunbury Road in Bulla.

The company’s original EMP was approved

in September. However, Hi-Quality was invited by the EPA to resubmit an EMP in December, after a legal review into the regulator’s process resulted in all tenderers’ EMP approvals being revoked.

The EPA assessed the new plan for potential environmental impacts, such as run-off, odour and potential land, surface water and ground water risks and considered that there were appropriate measures detailed in the plan to keep the environment and the community safe.

EPA chief executive Lee Miezis said the health and the local environment and

community was EPA’s highest priority.

“We put the health of the environment and community first,” he said.

“We will have a rigorous approach to ensure all safety measures are followed.”

A Hi-Quality spokesperson said the latest EMP was developed under the new regulations for the management and disposal of the soil excavated by the tunnel boring machines on the West Gate Tunnel Project.

“Hi-Quality developed its EMP with a commitment to upholding the highest environmental standards,” the spokesperson said.

“While this is an important step in the process, Hi-Quality requires approval from the Minister for Planning of its Planning Scheme Amendment application, and the competitive tender process run by CPB John Holland for the contract is still under way.”

Melton council and the Moorabool Environment Group have launched legal action in the Supreme Court against the state government’s approval for the soil being dumped in Ravenhall and Bacchus Marsh.

Gudinski memorial planned

By Jessica Micallef The man responsible for bringing live music to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges could be permanently honoured in the area.

At last week’s Hume council meeting, deputy mayor Jack Medcraft asked for a report on the process to have a future bridge in Sunbury named the Michael Gudinski Bridge.

Mr Gudinski died on March 2, aged 68.

in the 1970s with business partner Ray Evans and was responsible for bringing some of the world’s biggest artists to the iconic Hanging Rock.

Cr Medcraft said the bridge, part of the

Sunbury South Precinct Structure Plan, will cross Jacksons Creek valley and overlook the Sunbury Pop Festival site.

“I think that is fitting,” Cr Medcraft said.

“It is better than putting a plaque on a rock or something out the front of the gate where the event took place.

“Michael Gudinski was the driving force for the Sunbury Pop Festival. He was ahead of his time in trying to promote Australian music.

“Sunbury is known for two things – The

Ashes and the Sunbury Pop Festival. A lot of artists owe it to Michael Gudinski and the Sunbury Pop Festival for starting their careers.”

Council officers said there is no projected date as to when the bridge will be built.

“It could be between five and 10 years away, but it’s going to be built,” Cr Medcraft said.

“It [the bridge] will be there forever and it’s to recognise the involvement he had in our area.”

Mr Gudinski will be honoured with a state funeral at Rod Laver Arena on March 24.

Hume council has appointed Roslyn Wai as interim chief executive following the resignation of chief executive Domenic Isola.

Mr Isola, who was appointed as chief executive in August 2007, had been with the organisation for more than 20 years.

In August last year the council reappointed Mr Isola to the top job for another four years.

Hume mayor Joseph Haweil said Ms Wai has 30 years’ experience working across the media, tertiary education and water sectors in public relations, community engagement, customer service, business management, strategy and governance.

“Roslyn is a highly regarded senior executive, with strong experience in delivering organisational strategy, stakeholder engagement and people management,” he said.

“The council has great confidence in Roslyn to lead the organisation through this interim period, and with the support of the executive management team, will continue to deliver stable and consistent management of Hume council until a permanent appointment is made.

“As our communities recover and reconnect from the impacts of COVID-19, council will continue to deliver the critical services, programs and projects our growing community needs and seize opportunities to accelerate economic recovery of businesses, employment and local investment.”

Ms Wai joined Hume council in 2019 as communications, engagement and advocacy director.

Regional property in demand

By Jessica Micallef House prices across Victoria reached their highest in 17 years last month, with property values in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges following a statewide trend.

The latest data from CoreLogic revealed that Australian and Melbourne home values surged 2.1 per cent higher in February – the largest month-on-month change in CoreLogic’s national home value index since August 2003.

The data also revealed that Macedon Ranges property values increased by 2 per cent in

February, 3.5 per cent in the last quarter and 1.8 per cent over the past 12 months.

The median property value in the Macedon Ranges is more than $800,000.

In Sunbury, home values have also surged over the past month, with a 1.9 per cent increase.

In the last quarter, Sunbury house values increased 3.4 per cent and 1.8 per cent, with a median property value of more than $594,000.

CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless said Melbourne’s outer west was one of Melbourne’s most affordable markets. “Housing values were up 2.8 per cent across Melbourne’s outer

west over the three months ending February, which was a slightly softer growth rate than the broader Melbourne average which recorded a 3.5 per cent lift in values,” he said.

“However the past 12 months has seen housing values rise at a faster pace than the broader Melbourne average, up 2.5 per cent.

“With a median dwelling value of $608,840, it’s also one of Melbourne’s most affordable markets.

“With first home buyers so active and flexible working arrangements becoming more popular, affordable detached housing markets

Revving up support for Calder Park A Sunbury resident wants the Calder Park Raceway to be returned to it’s “former glory”.

Sarah Allen has started a petition to save the raceway from “sitting abandoned” and “slowly wasting away.”

“Every time I drive pass the raceway, I feel sad because of how much it has deteriorated,” she said. “I want it to be restored to it’s former glory because the site has a lot of history. When I was a kid, my dad took me there to see races and it’s sad to see where it is now.”

The track has been mostly unused in recent years following a family dispute between former owner Bob Jane and his son Rodney Jane in the early 2010s.

In December, tumble weed from the site invaded nearby properties, while a fire in January damaged fences of nearby houses.

Ms Allen said the raceway had the potential to hold events that attracted a big audience.

“New South Wales has Bathurst, why not have something of similar significance here in Victoria to help boost revenue?” she said.

“We would undoubtedly attract a lot of tourists and help stimulate our economy.

“And if the drag strip was open to the public, less people would die on the roads from reckless behaviour.”

More than 1000 people have signed Ms Allen’s petition.

Brimbank councillors raised concerns about the track and the overall site at a council meeting last month, following concerns from residents.

Mayor Ranka Rasic said residents are concerned about the condition of the site and what appears to be a lack of maintenance.

“This includes not only the race track component but also the open paddocks,” she said. “Residents are concerned about the apparent deterioration of the racetrack, buildings and the safety of the race track site.”

Mr Lawless said the divergence between metro and regional housing demand in Victoria and New South Wales was more substantial than in other states. “Internal migration data shows more people are leaving Melbourne and Sydney for regional areas, resulting in a transition of activity from the metro regions to the outer fringe and regional markets,” he said.

“Better housing affordability, an opportunity for a lifestyle chance and lower density housing options are other factors that might be contributing to this trend.”

‘Selfish’ drivers put lives at risk More than 100 drivers were caught breaking the law on Macedon Ranges roads during the Labour Day long weekend.

Police were out in full force on Victorian roads during a four-day crackdown between Friday, March 5 and Monday, March 8.

Police intercepted 110 drivers on Macedon Ranges roads, including 82 speeding motorists, 11 unregistered vehicles, five unlicensed drivers and seven people caught without a seatbelt.

Two people were caught using their mobile phone while driving and one motorist was nabbed driving under the influence of alcohol.

In Hume, 34 speeding offences were handed out to drivers, seven unregistered vehicles were caught on the road and eight disobeying traffic control.

Two cars were impounded and one cycling offence was also detected.

Across the state, more than 6700 traffic offences were detected and four people lost their lives, during the weekend.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy road trauma was preventable.

“While police saw the majority of people do the right thing on our roads, too many people were selfishly putting their lives, and the lives of others at risk,” she said.

“All we ask is for people to have a little patience and care on our roads so that everybody can arrive at their destinations safely.”

Push for JobSeeker increase

By Jessica Micallef Hume councillor Jarrod Bell wants a “real and meaningful” increase put towards the current JobSeeker rate.

The Jacksons Creek ward councillor raised a motion during a council meeting last week, asking the council to write to Prime Minister Scott Morrison to further increase the JobSeeker rate.

The JobSeeker payment was increased from $282 to $557 per week during the COVID-19 pandemic, before being gradually decreased.

Currently people on the JobSeeker payment are receiving a $150 coronavirus supplement but the payment is due to end at the end of the month. Last month, the federal government announced a $25 per week increase to the JobSeeker payment taking the payment to $307 per week from April 1.

Cr Bell said the increase was “woefully inadequate” and “unacceptable”. “Our welfare safety net is exactly that – a safety net,” he said.

“It’s not an opportunity for us to make struggling peoples struggle even harder.

“The increase equates to just over $3 a day. I challenge anyone who thinks they can live on $40 a day.”

Cr Naim Kurt said Meadow Heights, Broadmeadows, Roxburgh and Somerton were in the top five suburbs in Victoria that had residents on a “miniscule” JobSeeker payment.

“It is relevant for us as a council to speak

up about this matter and let the federal government know that they need to do a little bit more in this space for our community.”

Deputy mayor Jack Medcraft said more attention needed to be focused on getting people jobs and supporting pensioners.

“Who pays for it [JobSeeker]? The taxpayer does and you can’t keep taking money from the taxpayer to pay for the lifestyles of people who don’t want to work,” he said. “I agree it is very difficult to live on that sort of money [but] pensioners are the ones who should be looked after … they have paid taxes their whole lives.”

Study shores up water security Coliban Water is conducting field investigations south of Kyneton to identify a potential groundwater supply for Kyneton and Tylden.

The water company’s climate and population adaption executive general manager Steve Healy said the need to secure an alternative supply source was identified in Coliban Water’s Urban Water Strategy 2017.

“Kyneton and Tylden are currently supplied by water from Lauriston Reservoir, which is treated at the Kyneton Water Treatment Plant,” he said.

“Supply to these towns is secure, but securing a groundwater supply will provide an alternative source to manage climate change impacts and supplement the current supply during the drought.

“Water security is also a strategic direction in our Strategy 2030, our 10-year plan to guide us to ensure there is enough water to sustain and grow economic activity and investment for our region.”

Initial field investigations to identify potential drilling sites south of Kyneton took place earlier this month.

“Our investigations are mindful of existing groundwater use and value in the area,” Mr Healy said.

“Goulburn-Murray Water regulates groundwater and we will meet all its regulatory requirements.

“If we identify potential test drilling sites, we will provide information to the community on any further works.”

To market, to market Sunbury’s Gumboots Early Learning Centre is doing its bit to raise money for the Good Friday Appeal.

The centre will be hosting a five-day market, offering silent auctions and items for sale, with funds going towards the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, on April 2.

The centre’s educational leader Corrine Brown said the market will have children’s artwork and local goods and services up for grabs.

“We will be holding multiple silent auctions that include a family photo shoot, artificial flower arrangements and somebody to mow your lawn,” she said.

“We will have our own items to purchase … such as children’s art work, clay sculpture and fresh chicken eggs. We are also accepting cash donations and we will have [donation] tins at the market.

“All items donated will be coming from our families at Gumboots Early. Learning and the Sunbury business community.”

The centre hopes to raise $500 for the appeal across the five-day market.

Ms Brown said the work the Royal Children’s Hospital provided was incredible.

“Working with children, we know how vulnerable they can be,” she said.

“The work the Royal Children’s Hospital does to support families and children, regardless of their circumstances … is super important.

The market will be held between March 22-26 at 730 Elizabeth Drive, Sunbury, 6.30am-6.30pm.

Minister asked to step in to get toilet block rebuilt Calls for a toilet block to be reinstated at Bulla Recreation Reserve have made it all the way to State Parliament.

Western Metropolitan MP and Bulla resident Bernie Finn earlier this month asked Local Government Minister Shaun Leane to speak to Hume council to ensure it returns the “much-needed” toilet block to the reserve.

“Locals want them back. If the Jack McKenzie Hall is not open, there is no public access to toilets and that is a truly deplorable situation,” Mr Finn said.

Cr Jodi Jackson raised a motion during last week’s council meeting to look at reinstating the toilet block, saying Bulla residents had expressed a “deep desire” to have them open and accessible for residents and visitors.

“I know that Bulla does get a lot of traffic, people are going through and making their way somewhere,” Cr Jackson said.

“I think it is a reasonable request … so we can start having a discussion about what is available, what we can provide for them and consider whether that can be done in the next 12 months.”

Deputy mayor Jack Medcraft said he was responsible for having the original toilet block at the Bulla Recreation Reserve demolished more than a year ago because of the “unsavoury characters” that hung around there.

He said he couldn’t justify the council spending money on a toilet block where only “half a dozen” people passed through.

“That toilet block was only used for illegal activities. Very rarely did anyone go out there,” he said.

“We are looking at nearly $300,000 for a

toilet block that will only be used occasionally.

“The cost is not warranted.”

Cr Carly Moore said there were many sites across Hume competing for a new toilet block.

“We need to make sure that no toilet or no site is jumping the queue because a councillor is requesting it,” she said.

The council will consider reinstalling the public toilets, as part of its budget deliberations.

Cafe burglary Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the alleged theft of tools from a Mount Macedon business last month. Sunbury Women’s Shed members have found a new home to meet.

The group has been given access to the Sunbury Men’s Shed on Thursday afternoons, including full use of all equipment and power tools.

Women’s shed founding member Noelene Jones said they had been looking for a more permanent place to meet for four years.

“We are so excited to have use of the Sunbury Men’s Shed workshop and finishing room so we can progress some of the projects we started at home pre-covid,” she said.

The Sunbury Women’s Shed has taken part in a number of community projects including work at the Goonawarra Neighbourhood House, creating a street library box and

running workshops in local hardware stores.

Shed president Margaret Cassidy said the shed was a great way for women to enhance their practical skills.

“The key things we are able to gain through the skills we are learning at the shed are the confidence and sense of empowerment to be able to fix things ourselves as well as the enjoyment of creating something,” she said.

The women’s shed is open to anyone over 18. The group meets on Thursdays between 12.30-3pm at Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, 12-28 Macedon Street, Sunbury.

Pokies spend continues to alarm

By Jessica Micallef More than $11 million has been fed in to poker machines in Hume, according to the Alliance for Gambling Reform.

The latest data from the alliance reveals $11.01 million was spent on Hume poker machines in January this year, up 19 per cent compared to January 2020 ($9.29 million).

However, the data also showed a six per cent decrease in money spent on Hume poker machines in January this year when compared

to December 2020, with $11.76 million fed into machines.

In the Macedon Ranges, gamblers spent $791,768 across the shire’s poker machines in January this year – 0.2 per cent less than January 2020 ($792,985).

Macedon Ranges gamblers also spent $16,816 less on poker machines in December than in January this year.

Across the state, more than $7.7 million was spent on poker machines daily in January this year – $500,000 more a day than January 2020.

Gambling venues across Victoria were closed between March 16 and November 8 last year as a result of the state government’s coronavirus restrictions.

Alliance for Gambling Reform chief advocate Tim Costello said the astounding losses were occurring at a time when the Victorian economy desperately need stimulus.

“These increases are hugely concerning and show just how important it is for the Victorian government to reinstate restrictions they had in place when poker machines were switched

back on in November 2020, such as reduced poker machine operating hours,” he said.

“Those restrictions worked. That was a real-time, real-life experiment showing that gambling harm is reduced when opening hours are shortened.”

Mr Costello said it was “simply absurd” that Victoria had the worst pokies opening hours in Australia at 20 hours a day. In September, councils wrote an open letter to Premier Daniel Andrews, requesting poker machines be closed between midnight and 10am.

Swim schools popular Hume parents are ensuring their children are safe around water.

There’s been a surge in demand for swimming lessons following the coronavirus pandemic putting a stop to classes in 2020, according to Hume council.

Acting director of corporate services Gavan O’Keefe said educating the community about safety in and around water is “essential”.

“Once [lockdown] restrictions eased across Victoria and we were able to reopen, we ran two intensive programs, focusing on water safety to help families prepare for the summer season,” Mr O’Keefe said.

“We knew that some students would regress after almost nine months between lessons, so it was great to see many eager to return, as well as many new students who’ve chosen to start their swimming journey with us.”

Mr O’Keefe said leisure centres across Hume – Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Splash Aqua Park and Leisure Centre, and

Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre – have had an influx of student enrolments following the COVID-19 shutdown last year.

“Late last year, we had 4893 students enrolled across all three leisure centres and this has now increased to 5471.”

As at February 28 this year there have been 84 drowning deaths reported in Australia this summer compared with 66 drowning deaths recorded for the same time in 2020. Twenty of this year’s drownings have been in Victoria.

‘Inspiring guides’ for women

By Michaela Meade Hume mayor Joseph Haweil held a morning tea last Thursday, in celebration of International Women’s Day. Cr Haweil said being able to host an event in person for the occasion was a privilege.

“I am … absolutely delighted … After being elected mayor last November, one of the first things I put [into action] was a large and fitting celebration of this international day,” he said.

He noted the council and its role in the movement that the day signifies.

“As leaders of this community … it is critical that we exercise our civic duty in proudly and prominently celebrating the achievements of members of our community and addressing the challenges that we should be working on,” he said. “It should not be strange that a male express such interest in honouring the achievements of women.”

Several women from the community addressed the gathering, sharing their stories.

Chair of the Victorian Multicultural Commission Vivienne Nguyen said women have played a major role in the community’s development.

“I thank the people that came before me to create this space,” Ms Nguyen said. “[We] will continue to develop the space into one where everyone can have the opportunity to rise.”

Young Hume local Rihan Rafaeel said, “there is no age, gender, or background requirement necessary to make a difference and bring about positive change”.

Marie Younan gave an emotional retelling of her life with blindness, highlighting that, “[she has] always been a fighter”.

Artist Lisa Buckland’s pieces were on display at the event, and she described how the various paintings were influenced by her life experiences.

MP Maria Vamvakinou said the three women who spoke were “inspiring guides” for the assembly. “[You show that] with support, with opportunity, and with belief in self, you can virtually overcome absolutely anything.”

Call to help share the dignity Supermarket giant Woolworths and national charity Share the Dignity are calling on Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents to help end period poverty as part of the first Share the Dignity Drive of the year.

Throughout March, Woolworths will donate five cents from each sanitary item sale to support the installation and maintenance of Dignity vending machines, to make sanitary items more accessible for women across the country.

Shoppers are also encouraged to donate sanitary items via pink donation boxes at the front of each Woolworths store.

Woolworths has been in partnership with Share the Dignity since 2019, and has raised more than $1.8 million for the charity, with more than a quarter of a million sanitary items also being donated by customers.

Woolworths operations manager Wally Ghanem said the support of shoppers went a long way to getting Australian women out of period poverty.

“Together as a community, we can make a difference so we are encouraging all our Sunbury and Macedon Ranges customers to get involved in the March Dignity Drive,” he said.

In 2020, Dignity Drive donations were impacted by COVID-19 and restricted access to vending machines resulted in a growing number of women experience period poverty, according to Share the Dignity. Share the Dignity founder Rochelle Courtenay said more than half of their vending machines were closed in the height of the pandemic.

“We will work to ensure women have access to the products they need,” she said.

5G network grows Telstra has expanded it’s 5G coverage in Lancefield and Gisborne.

The telecommunications company has rolled out it’s 5G capability to existing sites at Mount Gisborne, Gisborne and Lancefield Central.

Telstra regional general manager Steve Tinker said more 5G coverage meant customers with 5G devices can access faster download speeds and enjoy greater capacity during busy periods on the mobile network.

“We’ve added Telstra 5G to our site at Lancefield Central, which builds on our existing 5G coverage places like Kyneton and Kilmore, and we’re added Telstra 5G to our sites at Mount Gisborne and New Gisborne, bringing 5G coverage to Gisborne and large parts north of the Calder Freeway for the first time,” he said.

“We are continually expanding our 5G network across Melbourne and regional areas of Victoria and we’re adding up to 60 new Telstra 5G sites to the network every week across the country.”

Telstra has also expanded its 5G coverage in Melton to reach from Kurunjang down to High Street and Melton South, including the Western Freeway.

Cursed Child. She spoke with Jessica Micallef.

What is your connection to the Sunbury and/ or Macedon Ranges area?

I was born and raised in Woodend. I have done so many things here, made friends, started my dancing, singing and acting dance classes, performed in local theatre performances, and I go to Braemar Collage. My mum owns a small clinic and my brother plays basketball so we are very active in our little community.

What are your passions?

My main passion is acting, but I enjoy all things creative. I love gardening, design, environmental issues and history, especially about France. I enjoy art galleries, especially MONA in Tasmania, and cultural street festivals.

This was my professional debut at age 11. In 2019 I won National Royal South Street Music Competition – Stage Solo. I was also in the 2019 Melbourne City Ballet – Youth Theatre: Cats the Musical, playing Jemima (semi-professional); Glee Club with Adam Przewlocki; elite extension program with Sprout productions; 2019 Braemar School Production playing Marilyn Monroe; school band; Chemist Warehouse TV commercial; Mouth Players Production – Les Misérables, played petite Cosette; Sprout Theatre production of Alice in Wonderland playing Alice; and Mary Poppins.

I’ve also performed in previous productions of Annie, Peter Pan, Shrek, Wind in the Willows, I sang on the Macedon Ranges Music Festival Youth Stage and at Woodend Carols by Candlelight as a solo singer What do you like most about performing?

Almost my whole life. I started dance from age two then discovered singing which finally lead me to musical theatre and acting. Each time I perform I discover a little more about myself. I have a very strong work ethic, and enjoy learning.

What musical and theatre productions have you been involved in?

I am heavily involved in performing arts. I landed a 12-month contract in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, playing Lilly Potter Jr.

Performing on stage is a highly rewarding experience, there is some trepidation beforehand and much euphoria afterwards.

The things I like most about performing is the surreal feeling on stage, I am guided by the lights and sounds, and the energy from the audience. Being a performer also helps me at school, it teaches me many skills like how to improvise, knowing the importance of a deadline, know how to be present and read others, know how to multi-task, and to work long hours to achieve a goal. I was honoured that during COVID-19 I was awarded class captain and 2020 academic excellence whilst still rehearsing and performing in Harry Potter.

Library’s ‘dynamic’ design hailed

By Jessica Micallef The Sunbury Library at the Hume Global Learning Centre Sunbury is in the running for a national design award.

The library is one of 33 sites across the country shortlisted for the 2021 Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) Library Design Awards.

The awards are presented every two years and highlight the achievements of Australia’s leading architects, designers and library leaders and celebrate design excellence in new and refurbished libraries.

Hume mayor Joseph Haweil said the council was proud that the Sunbury library had been shortlisted.

“The Hume Global Learning Centre Sunbury, where the library is located, is one of the largest projects undertaken in Hume council’s history,” he said.

“Our growing community needed a space that would meet their changing needs and we aimed to deliver one that would honour the past, value the present and imagine the future.”

ALIA chief executive Sue McKerracher said the library, coupled with the dynamic architectural design, was well deserving of its place in the shortlist.

The Hume Global Learning Centre Sunbury opened on December 16, 2019 and is the third facility in Hume council’s suite of global learning centres.

The Sunbury centre cost $21.5 million to build, with the council contributing $18.5 million towards to the project for the purchase of land, building design and construction and a new carpark.

The state government contributed $3 million through it’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

The winning libraries will be announced at the Changing Spaces Library Design Conference as part of the Asia-Pacific Architecture Forum virtual event on March 18.

Connecting through COVID The new National Communications Museum found itself in a unique position last year – a museum thrown into a pandemic with no physical space for exhibitions. Michaela Meade spoke with some of the people involved about how the COVID-19 pandemic informed the inaugural exhibition.

“C

ommunication has never been so important.”

That was the biggest take away Jo-Anne Cooper had from the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was while working from home, like the rest of Victoria, that the director of the National Communications Museum (NCM) realised what role the new museum could be playing.

“I thought, here we are in the middle of the biggest communication story … of the century … and we weren’t doing anything,” Jo-Anne said.

That thought sparked the NCM’s inaugural exhibition – Connecting through COVID – available completely online.

Jo-Anne said it was important to put 2020’s pandemic in context.

“There are these amazing ups and downs, seismic events in world history that former generations have been part of, and now we’re part of one, for better or for worse.”

The museum decided to draw comparisons between the COVID-19 and Spanish Flu pandemics.

“We’ve done this before, not that long ago,” Jo-Anne said.

According to Jo-Anne, people living through the Spanish Flu pandemic didn’t have the ease of communication tools we have today; they had to display a sign of “SOS” in their windows, and hope.

“Council officers were employed to patrol the streets [looking for SOS signs].

“You wonder how thorough that could be.”

Jo-Anne said we now have the tools to get through the pandemic with more ease. We are able to catch up with family and friends virtually, and call for – and receive – help quickly.

Emily Siddons was brought on last year as exhibition and programs manager.

“In times of crisis, it is human nature to seek a comparative historical example,” Emily said.

“We wanted to provide … a way for audiences to navigate the challenges [and] provide some critical context.

“I wanted to use [the pandemic] as an opportunity for our museum to critically think about how we could approach digital engagement and stage digital experiences.”

Emily, as a millennial, said she wanted to capture the lived experience of 2020 for future generations in a way not possible during the Spanish Flu. “The changing definitions of privacy, intimacy and community in this time and how we all were propelled into this digital way of living and working [was important to remember].

“Hashtags [for example] … are so representative of our shared experience.

“I … tried to identify what [was] going to stand the test of time.”

Historian Mary Sheehan aided the exhibition through her role as a doctorate candidate with a broad knowledge of the 1919 Spanish Flu. “The Spanish Flu [has been] largely forgotten,” Mary said.

“There’s no proforma and no manual for managing pandemics, but much can be learned from pandemics when they do occur.”

Mary pointed out one aspect of people’s responses to pandemics that has not changed in a century.

“Some smart people made the comment [in 1919], quite erroneously… that masks were as efficient at keeping out germs as barbed wire fences were at keeping out flies.”

Mary said she hoped the exhibition was effective in quelling anxiety in the community.

“It’s so informative … And I think that’s a vital thing in times like this where there’s so much uncertainty, and people need some actual facts and information to make them feel more secure.”

world should prepare for the long haul.

“I think it’s an impact that will resonate for years, if not, forever.”

One of the “subjects” of the exhibition is the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s scrub choir.

Chief music therapist and creator of scrub choir Dr Emma O’Brien said she had noticed a dramatic increase in the level of stress in her colleagues.

After 200 staff wanted to be a part of the initial production of scrub choir, which involved filming themselves at work or at home singing or dancing to a song chosen by Emma, she knew “caring for the carer” was important.

“I realised how much staff really needed that time, that sort of permission to have a bit of fun,” Emma said.

“The time to have their own music therapy.

“It was an opportunity to remind people to

have just a small moment to themselves … and to be a part of something.”

Emma said the opportunity to be featured in NCM’s exhibition was fantastic.

“I was so honoured … I totally love the exhibition … it makes perfect sense to capture what happened last year.

“Scrub choir helped us stay connected when COVID … tried to rip us apart.”

Emma offered a final reflection on the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the world will pull through.

“The reality is it’s communities that solve pandemics. It’s the community that is going to see us all through.”

There was further action at 6pm outside Hoppers Crossing Uniting Church, where a conch shell blast sounded the alarm. The events were part of a global multi-faith day of action, involving more than 100 faith communities across the country.

HOKEY POKEY CHOCOLATE Ingredients 1 block Cadbury Caramilk chocolate 1 Violet Crumble bar Method 1. Cut the chocolate off the Violet Crumble and break up the honeycomb.

2. Break the Caramilk block into squares and put in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt the chocolate in 30 second bursts, stirring in between, until completely melted.

3. Add honeycomb to melted chocolate and stir to combine.

4. Pour mixture into a shallow tin lined with baking paper and refrigerate for 4 hours.

5. When set, cut chocolate into pieces and enjoy!

TIP: Sprinkle chocolate shavings from the Violet Crumble on top of the mixture before it sets for a little something extra!

You will need Cardboard or Wooden letters Glue Beads, ribbon, glitter and craft items to decorate Method 1. Trace a letter onto the cardboard and cut it out (ask a grown up to help if this is tricky).

2. Put glue on one part of the letter and use the craft items to decorate.

3. Continue adding glue and decorating in sections (so the glue doesn’t dry too quickly).

4. Once all done, let it dry and stick or sit your letter where you want it displayed.

TIP: Wooden letters can be found at most department stores and craft shops.

Hybrid SUV pioneer going strong

By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Resistance is futile: Mitsubishi recognised this years ago when it became the first automobile maker to ‘electrify’ the sports utility vehicle (SUV), taking the hybrid road with the Outlander on its journey to an alternative power source.

The Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) hit the road in 2017 running on electrical power with the back-up of a petrol engine used to charge the battery or add extra performance to the vehicle.

The thinking behind this, says Mitsubishi, is that the Outlander PHEV gives owners driving that most family cars encounter in the school drop-off or daily commute, which often involve stop/go traffic – conditions in which the internal combustion engine is least efficient.

Late in 2020 the two-model mid-size SUV was given a drivetrain upgrade with the addition of a Sport mode. MY21 has added a third variant blessed with a Bilstein premium suspension package tuned to enhance the driving experience.

Also, with the introduction of two-directional chargers in 2021, the Outlander PHEV will be the first SUV to be able to store electric power and return it to the home or grid.

The technically sophisticated SUV now comes in three highly specified variants – Outlander PHEV ES selling from $47,990, plus on-road costs, Outlander PHEV GSR, $52,490, and or top Outlander PHEV Exceed, $56,490.

All Outlanders are covered by Mitsubishi’s ten-year 200,000 kilometre warranty and capped price servicing when all scheduled services are done through the authorised Mitsubishi Motors Dealer Network. Some customers, such as government, taxis, rentals and selected national business, are excluded.

Styling The Starlight White test vehicle took the popular road to SUV exterior design with contrasting black mica roof, rails, rear spoiler, plus front and rear bumper skid plates and rear-view mirrors.

Not to be left out of the contrasting colour scheme were a black chrome plated radiator grille, front bumper air ducts and tailgate garnish. Highlights of a different nature up front were LED auto levelling headlamps and front foglamps.

The modern look was emphasised by 18-inch black machined two-tone alloy wheels.

Engines / transmissions Interior Styling included (you guessed it) black accents, in the form of shift knob and steering wheel, roof lining, a-pillar trim, silver stitched armrest and door trim. A four-way power seat with micro-suede facings and synthetic leather bolsters offered the drive a deal of comfort.

Rear occupants also were well looked after with above average head room for adults and ample leg room with the front seats accommodating.

With the rear seat backs folded, cargo space extends to 1741 mm in length, a completely flat 463 litres of luggage room. A power tailgate makes for easy access.

An under-floor compartment provided space for the charging cable and other small items.

Infotainment The conventional Outlander’s multi-information system is augmented with a PHEV-dedicated menu which provides access to functions and displays for electric vehicle usage.

This includes a 7-inch display screen with a navigation system that includes a charging station search, charging cost, scheduled charging and air cooling and remaining cruising area display.

A PHEV Driving Information Display incorporates an energy flow display, energy monitoring and ECO system information.

A Mitsubishi eight-speaker sound system is included.

Petrol power comes from the tried-and-tested 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while twin electric motors – 60 kW, front; 70 kW, rear contribute to combined maximum power of 157 kW (parallel hybrid mode) and combined maximum torque of 332 Nm (all modes).

Drive battery capacity is 13.8 kWh, giving the vehicle a claimed potential electric driving range of up to 54 km.

around fast bends and tight corners with a level of driver confidence unheard of in a similar vehicle.

Add to this, the upgraded safety systems and the ability to go beyond the 54 kilometre electric motor range with the petrol engine kicking in, the latest Outlander PHEV offers minimum anxiety on most on-road (and soft road) travel.

The PHEV makes the best use of petrol and electricity by delivering power in three modes – EV Drive Mode, Series and Parallel Modes – that operate without any intervention from the driver.

EV mode is all electric driving, using only electric power from the drive battery. Carbon dioxide emissions and petrol consumption are zero up to 120 km/h.

In Series Mode, the petrol engine is used to recharge the battery which supplies the electric motors to drive the wheels. The system switches to Series mode when the battery

charge falls below a predetermined level or more performance is required, such as during overtaking or on a steep climb.

The switch to Parallel Mode occurs when the vehicle reaches highway speeds, or extra power is required. In Parallel Mode, the petrol engine provides drive to the front wheels with help from the electric motors.

The electric motors also manage Outlander’s dynamic stability, the integrated S-AWC system ensuring it has the same levels of roadholding as a conventional four-wheel drive.

The electric motors act as generators during deceleration. They recharge the drive battery when the driver releases the accelerator or when the brake pedal is applied.

The degree of energy recovered can be controlled using the gear lever or paddle shifts on the steering wheel. The driver can increase energy uptake by moving the lever from ‘D’ to ‘B’ where two levels – B3 or B5 – are available. Alternatively, by using the steering wheel paddles, the driver can adjust the level of regenerative braking to any of the six levels, from B0 to B5.

Consumption figures obtained on test were: 6.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and six kilometres per kWh on a mix of city and motorway driving.

Summary If superior ride and handling are requirements, the Bilstein advantage Outlander PHEV GSR is the SUV for you. However, patience could pay off by waiting for the all-new Outlander due for release later this year.

Diggers set for action

By Tara Murray Diggers Rest footballers are raring to go, ahead of the Riddell District Football League season kicking off on April 17.

After a season of no footy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. the Burras have been busy putting in work behind the scenes.

Burras’ coach Jamie Lobb said the club’s pre-season had been one of the strongest they’ve had in recent years.

“We’ve got double the numbers we would normally have on the track at this time of year,” he said.

“We’ve had 50 to 55 on the track each night, we would normally get about 30. All the guys have enjoyed being able to see each other.”

Lobb said they kept their training program the same as they normally would, with it ramping up after the Christmas break.

The Burras, who made the preliminary final in 2019, will have a similar list to the one they put together for last year’s cancelled season.

“I’m pretty happy with it,” Lobb said.

“Most of the players from last year are back and the couple of guys we recruited last season are returning. “[Bowen medallist] Jaidyn Caruana was the big-name signing for us last season. We’ve added a couple of young kids from Melton.

“We’ll have two or three guys up on what we had in 2019.”

David Morrice and Corey Wright have both moved to other clubs, while Alec Del Papa has retired. Lobb said they were unsure whether Lachie Langford would be in Melbourne and whether he would play.

Lobb said it would be business as usual for the club, which is always among the premiership mix.

“We’re setting standards high for ourselves and not selling ourselves short,” he said.

“We have a lot of volunteers and people putting in the hard work to get to the big day.

“There’s no lay down for us.”

With reigning premiers Rupertswood having moved competitions last year, Lobb expects the premiership race to be different this year.

But he said because the finals would be top

five instead of six, you won’t notice having one less team as much.

The Burras face Woodend-Hesket in round one on April 17.

They then face Macedon the following week on Anzac Day. Traditionally, the Cats faced Rupertswood on Anzac Day. Lobb said that it would be a special day. The club has had a long tradition of heading to the

Sunbury RSL dawn service.

He said he hoped they could now make a tradition with the Cats to play on April 25 every year.

“It’s something we’re looking forward to,” he said. “We jumped on the front foot pretty quickly [to fill the vacant spot]. I’ve gone to the game the last three to four years and it’s always a good day.”

SPORT Riley’s walking for glory at national championship

Sunbury’s Riley Coughlan has taken the next step in his athletics career, qualifying for his first national championship.

The teenager will be walking for gold at the Australian Track and and Field Championships later this month, after a strong performance at the Athletics Victoria State Championships recently.

He finished in second place, four seconds behind the winner Liam Hutchins. Both boys have qualified for the national titles.

Going into the state championships with one of the fastest times in Australia in his age group, Coughlan had set his heart on making nationals for the first time. The nationals will be held at Sydney Olympic Park in Sydney between April 12 and 21.

“It feels pretty good,” he said.

“I’m happy to make it and I felt like I had a good chance of making it this year.”

Coughlan, who represents Knox Athletics at senior athletic events, said his focus at the national would be to enjoy the experience and take it all in. He hoped he could finish in the top five.

“My time is ranked fourth in my age group at the moment.”

The 14-year-old, who attends Salesian College in Sunbury, said he became interested in walking events after contesting them at Sunbury Little Athletics Centre.

“I got interested in it through the junior development squad through little aths. I find it easy now, it was a bit harder when I started. I got more into it as I got to the higher levels.

“My [now] coach came and asked me to train with her in Knox. Mum now takes me over on Tuesdays and Sundays and sometimes Thursdays.”

bronze medallist Dane Bird-Smith was the person he looked up to in the sport.

Coughlan has been competing in the 3-kilometre event, a long way shorter than the open age international events of 20 kilometres and 50 kilometres. He said he might consider taking up the longer events when he’s older.

It’s a busy few weeks for Coughlan, who at the weekend competed at the Little Athletics Victoria State Championships. He was due to compete in the under-14 1500km run and the 1500km walking events.

Overall, 11 Sunbury Little Athletics athletes were set to compete at the event: Logan Carroll, Ellora Clements, Isabella Jordan, Liam Joyce, Oliver Long, Oliver Smyth, Michael Sparks, Georgia Stepanoski, Zachary Stevens and Indiana Stott.

Bramble realises dream

By Tara Murray New Hawthorn rookie Lachlan Bramble had moments where he had given up on his dream of playing AFL. So when Hawthorn gave the 22-year-old the opportunity to train with them and potentially earn a rookie spot for this year, the Sunbury resident was keen to give it a good crack.

It didn’t take long for the Hawks to sign Bramble as part of the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP), becoming the final player on their list.

“At stages I didn’t think it would happen,” he said.

“I did a few Wednesdays training with Hawthorn during the week … and then got asked to train two weeks full-time with the club.

“It was awesome and I was blown away they had asked me to do it. I thought this was my opportunity.

“It was one last crack and it paid off. It is awesome and [is] starting to settle in.”

Being on an AFL list is a far cry from 2019 when Bramble decided to step away from VFL to play local football.

He had played 11 senior games in two years with Williamstown, but starved of consistent opportunities he returned to his local club, the Sunbury Lions, in the Ballarat Football League.

“Previously I didn’t play as much VFL as I would have liked and I got quite frustrated as I thought that I could have been playing,” he admits.

“There were a few other little things going on and my mates got me back to play with Sunbury. It was nice not having to worry about structures and clear my head and just play footy.”

While Bramble enjoyed his time playing with the Lions, he said there was still an urge to play at a higher level.

He signed with Williamstown for the 2020 VFL season, which would later be cancelled.

Bramble said the lead-up to 2020 was the best pre-season he had completed.

While COVID-19 ended the footy season without a game being played, Bramble hit his home gym with the aim of putting on some more muscle, while trying to keep fit.

Bramble joined the Box Hill Hawks for the 2021 VFL season.

It was a familiar face in former Williamstown and now Box Hill assistant coach Andy Collins that convinced him to make the move.

“Andy Collins rang me one day and said he would love to coach me again,” he said.

“I had made a strong relationship with Collo and took his word and took the opportunity to play with Box Hill.

“I jumped at it and it has paid off.”

Bramble said it had been an easy transition to Box Hill, where he was one of the older guys at the group. Now part of the AFL list, Bramble said his aim was to continue with the same motto that had seen him earn his spot: playing with confidence.

Bramble played in Hawthorn’s only official practice match against North Melbourne,

finishing with 12 possessions and kicking two points.

“It’s pretty surreal and I never thought I would play an AFL game, let alone be on an AFL list,” he said.

“I took a lot out of the game. Hopefully I’ll build from there and hopefully I’ll get to do it in a few weeks time.”

It was a perfect debut season for Williamstown CYMS in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Women’s competition.

Fielding a women’s side for the first time, the CYs went through the season undefeated, capping it off earlier this month with a grand final victory.

CYs president Leigh Hillier said the first season exceeded all expectations.

“It’s our first women’s side in 135 years at the club,” he said.

“It’s an awesome achievement to win in their first season. We wanted to be a more diverse club and wanted more women to be involved.”

Hillier said their female playing numbers had grown throughout the season and they had finished with a group of 16 players.

He said there were mixed emotions after the grand final win against Glenroy, winning by two runs.

“There was a sense of relief,” he said.

“Having not lost a game all season, there was pressure on us going into the grand final not to lose. It got closer than we would have liked. We had the runs on the board and we kept at it.

“It was a tense finish, but that’s what you want in finals.”

Sally Burt was named player of the match for her 25 with the bat as she stuck around and brought stability to the batting as others went out around her.

Hillier said the club was already better for having a women’s side.

He said they would look at having two sides next season, while they would like to field junior girls’ sides too.

He also thanked Hobsons Bay council for its support in helping guide the club in setting up the team.
