Cafe born out of COVID A Caroline Springs couple who had to shut their cafe in the city due to COVID-19 are back in business as co-owners of a new cafe at the Bunnett Business Park. Peshala Liyanagamage and Nixson Thambithurai have joined forces with co-owner Ange Marinakis to open The Rogue Squirrel Cafe. The Sunshine North cafe opened last week. Mr Marinakis said the cafe was meant to open in October but was put off until last week due to lockdown. “When we started the concept last year it was during COVID,” he said. Mr Marinakis said Ms Liyanagamage and Mr Thambithurai were on JobKeeper until they decided to get involved in the new venture. They had run a cafe at Victoria University in the CBD, which closed due to a lack of international students and foot traffic. Other locals have been employed at the business as well. Mr Marinakis said the cafe provided high quality food that you wouldn’t expect to find in a business park. The company will look to host functions, high teas and other events. Record pokies spend By Tara Murray Brimbank council is calling on the state government to reduce gaming venue opening hours following the biggest monthly spend on poker machines in the municipality since the introduction of machines in 1992. Data released by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation shows $14.7 million was spent at Brimbank’s 15 gaming venues in December 2020 and $13.8 million in January 2021. The amount of money fed into poker machines in January was 26 per cent higher than the same time last year – the largest

increase of any Victorian municipality. The top three venues in Victoria, ranked according to increased daily expenditure, are all located in Brimbank. Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said that the area can’t maintain such a high pokies spend. “Brimbank has been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with increasing unemployment, growing reliance on income support, and significant impacts on local business. “Following my letter to the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation in December, the importance of reform has been reinforced with the

continuation of distressing losses shown in the January figures. “On behalf of council, I’m calling on the Victorian government to act immediately to modify the licensing conditions of all gaming venues in Victoria, to limit operation to a maximum of 16 hours per day.” In September 2020, Brimbank joined 12 other councils in signing an open letter to Premier Daniel Andrews calling on the Victorian government to limit operating hours for gaming venues when they re-opened. Through the council’s 19 Point Action Plan for COVID Response and Recovery, the council is also advocating for the government to invest

in a dedicated Community Resilience and Fairness Response for Brimbank. As part of this the council is seeking funding for improved gambling harm prevention measures. Gambling reform advocate Anna Bardsley said it was imperative that the government learned from the pandemic. “The amount lost in Brimbank says so much about how dangerous these machines are, and how much damage they do to our communities,” she said. “Almost $30 million has been lost in Brimbank alone in just two months. Imagine the harm that is coming with that, and the loss that represents to the local economy. Our communities deserve better.”

Brimbank ‘hoon laws’ working By Tara Murray Brimbank council’s local anti-hoon laws have resulted in a decrease in the number of hoons on local streets, according to latest data. In January 2018, the council was the first in the state to introduce laws which gave police powers to issue fines to anyone caught conducting or spectating at illegal, dangerous or harmful activity involving vehicles on council property or in a public place. Fines can be up to $800. Since the laws were introduced, 327 infringements have been issued – there’s been none issued so far this year, and just three in December, 2020. Brimbank council city development

director Kelvin Walsh said a number of councils were considering introducing similar laws before COVID-19 hit. “Brimbank council has received consistently positive feedback in response to the laws, both from Victoria Police and from the community. “The prospect of a fine seems to be working as incidents of hooning events in Brimbank – including complaints to council – have reduced since the introduction of this local law. “Prior to this change, council received weekly complaints from the community about hooning events. This has now drastically reduced. “Brimbank council’s first priority is the safety of our community. Hoon events … are

Mum seeks answers A Keilor Downs mother has been left feeling defeated as she struggles to find a school that best fits her autistic son. Linda Justin, who has three sons on the autism spectrum, says she has spent many years trying to find the best opportunities for her children to ensure their needs are met. She said the closure of special schools when her oldest son was still in school had affected his health, she’s now facing the same situation with her 15-year-old son Luke. Luke had been attending the Wattle Education Intervention Program in Niddrie until it closed last year. Ms Justin said the closure of the program left many parents feeling like they had nowhere for their children to go. “At the end of last year the wattle adolescent program was shut down,” she said. “It was shut down without notice and we were left asking where else we can go. “There was no support and no one would tell us why it was shut down.”

It is believed many of the events are being held just outside Brimbank’s borders. Hume councillor Jack Medcraft, who last week called for the cars of hoon drivers to be crushed, said he had “absolutely” noticed an increase of hoon activity in neighbouring Hume. “You can’t have one council [Brimbank] with a hard stance, that’s not going to stop them … they’ll just move to the next block. “The problem I have with fines is a lot of

these [people] wouldn’t have the money to pay or just wouldn’t pay. “But if you take their car off them, they’d react pretty quickly.” Victoria Police have launched Operation Achilles, following a rise in the number of illegal hoon meets and other intentional high risk driving (IHRD) events over the past few months. As part of Achilles, investigators across the state will work together to reduce and disrupt hoon activity and identify those responsible for organising hoon meets. Police will also patrol known hoon hot spots. Fourteen people were arrested and charged late last month in relation to an alleged illegal hoon meet.

Cheques not in the mail Some Fraser Rise residents are being forced to drive more than 10 kilometres to pick up their mail because there is no mail delivery service in their area. A number of residents, including those in the Westwood and Sienna North estates, took to a local Facebook group recently complaining that their mail is being delivered to Melton post office and not the nearby Caroline Springs post office. One resident, Sally, who didn’t want her last name printed, said the whole thing was beyond a joke. “I don’t receive mail and was told I won’t until July at least,” she said. “Redirection has been a nightmare and they take my mail to Melton instead of Caroline Springs. They don’t even let me know if there’s mail there. “It’s a joke and I’m not sure why I had to spend $300 on a new letterbox when we can’t get mail.” Sally said that she spent an hour at the Melton post office recently trying to set up a PO Box but was told that it had to be approved. Her mail redirection from her previous address has also been stopped. Another resident, Kaleb Dovale, said he wasn’t told that his mail wouldn’t be delivered when he moved in. He said it was only after complaining about some issues about parcel delivery, that “a whole lot of letters“ were dropped at his house. “I had a lot of fines and official notices,” he said. “It caused me a lot of trouble.” Other residents have complained to Australia Post on a number of occasions. One resident said they were told that mail was being returned to senders. An Australia Post spokesperson said some areas of Fraser Rise were not getting delivery because of safety concerns. “In Fraser Rise, over 4000 households and delivery points are receiving a street mail delivery service, with 530 of these commencing as recently as March 1,” the spokesperson said. “While there is ongoing construction in parts of Fraser Rise, some areas are not safe for our people to deliver at the moment. “Once these areas are safe, delivery will start in these parts of Fraser Rise as well.” The spokesperson said any mail that can’t be available for collection at Melton post office and any carded items will go to Caroline Springs post office. Residents who are not receiving street delivery can also access a PO Box at Melton post office for a reduced rate.

Ms Justin said in an email from Education Minister James Merlino, he states that the decision to close the program was based on issues with school registration, substantially higher rental costs associated with the venue and advice from the Disability and Inclusion Branch that better and more evidence-based programs are available. The email, seen by Star Weekly, stated that no student would be disadvantaged by the decision to shut the program. But Ms Justin disagrees. She says both hers and Luke’s mental health has suffered. She said her older son’s mental health suffered when his school closed a number of years ago and she was starting to see some of those signs in Luke. “My mental health is at crisis point with what is happening,” she said. “My biggest fear is how am I going to support him. I can’t go through this again.” Ms Justin said she was offered a place for Luke in the Jacana Autism School, but she felt the school wasn’t suitable for him. He is now transitioning to a school in South Melbourne which requires an hour and half of travel each way. “They say there are better opportunities around for the children,” Ms Justin said. “Please explain what the better options are? “They say they’re building schools in growth areas, in Melton and Wyndham, which is fair enough, but they haven’t been built yet. “I’m still waiting for a letter to tell me what schools are around. There is a lack of schools for [special needs] adolescents. Why isn’t there a school in the region?” The education department was contacted.

Health merger gets green light By Benjamin Millar A permanent merger of the western suburbs’ two health services has been given the green light by both the Western Health Board and Djerriwarrh Health Services administrator. The approval follows a report on the proposed voluntary amalgamation of Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health Services that recommended proceeding with a voluntary amalgamation based on “clear community benefits” from such a move, especially in light of the state government decision to hand

operation of a new Melton Hospital to Western Health. The recommendation for amalgamation has been sent to the Secretary of the Department of Health for consideration, paving the way for the merged entity to be responsible for almost one million people living in the fast-growing corridor. Western Health and Djerriwarrh Health Services currently service the healthcare needs of 985,000 people from Footscray and Williamstown to Bacchus Marsh, employing more than 7600 workers across 13 sites.

Talks about a potential merger began early last year but stalled during the COVID-19 crisis. A joint statement released by the services stated that the immediate priority remains certainty and confidence for staff and communities. “While the department makes its reviews, both health services have prepared the way for a joint transition team to be put in place to drive change in the event the minister for health approves the voluntary amalgamation,” it stated.

The statement promised that Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital will continue to operate as a community-based hospital, Grant Lodge residential aged care at Bacchus Marsh will be retained and that there will be no reductions in overall health staffing numbers, and no losses to frontline clinical staff as a consequence of amalgamation. “There will be ongoing community participation and engagement with local service planning, clients and patients will continue to have choice as to where they access care.”

From Tour de France to trails of Hillside Six-time Tour de France rider Matteo Bono has made the most of the local riding paths since moving to Hillside. The Italian, who moved to the area two years ago to be with his fiance, said he has enjoyed exploring his new home on the bike. He has been pleasantly surprised to see many other locals on their bikes since the COVID-19 pandemic started. “It’s actually really interesting what has happened during COVID-19,” he said. “I was surprised to see the participation of a lot more people cycling. It’s been people of all ages from five years old to people who are 70 to

80 years old. “You could really see a boom of cycling … I hope it will continue.” Mr Bono said bike riding was good for both your physical and mental health, and good for the community. He said Hillside provided the perfect backdrop for a ride with a number of cycling paths in the area and he was still finding new paths all the time. With the lockdown over, Mr Bono said he hoped that people would stick with bike riding. “It’s good for everyone and it’s nice to see

more people on the bike,” he said. “Be confident on the bike and to keep going and learning. You might get problems but be confident and the problems will pass.” As well as continuing to ride, Mr Bono has set up a new business, Bike Hotels – an online platform connecting cyclists with bike-friendly accommodation and services. He said he had started working on the project before lockdown and was hoping it was something that would help the local community.

Brimbank speeding drivers are lighter in the pocket after being caught out during Victoria Police’s Operation Arid. The operation, which ran over the long weekend, nabbed 139 speeding offences in Brimbank. Overall, there were nearly 3000 speeding offences across the state. In Brimbank there were 12 unregistered vehicles, 14 seat belt offences, 11 drug drivers and six unlicensed drivers detected during the four-day blitz. There were no drink drivers caught. Across the state there were 6762 traffic offences, 215 drink drivers and 195 drug drivers caught. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said while the majority of people were doing the right thing, the message wasn’t getting through to everyone. “This long weekend, we saw tragedies on our roads with four people dying and four others left with life-threatening injuries,” she said. “Heartbreakingly, their families and friends will now be left to pick up the pieces, and four families will now be mourning the loss of their loved ones. “Road trauma is preventable. While police saw the majority of people do the right thing on our roads, too many people were selfishly putting their lives, and the lives of others, at risk. “All we ask is for people to have a little more patience and care on our roads so that everybody can arrive at their destinations safely.” Tara Murray

New emergency department opens its doors Patients would have noticed a change at the Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department last week, with the first stage of a redevelopment and expansion open. The $34.9 million redevelopment started in 2019, with the completed project expected to open later this year. The first stage, opened last Wednesday, includes a new entrance closer to the Furlong Road end of Majorca Street. The old entrance and triage, which was also on Majorca Street, are no longer accessible. Western Health said the project would support the hospital to provide people in the growing western suburbs with timely and world-class medical care.

The emergency department treats about 85,000 patients each year, making it one of the busiest in the state. It’s expected that an extra 59,000 patients will be treated each year after the redevelopment has been completed. The redevelopment will double the number of beds available in the emergency department and provide an expanded kids-only section, specifically designed to provide about 19,700 children a year a calmer, more compassionate environment to receive emergency care. The department will also include a mental health and alcohol and other drug crisis hub which can fast-track patients who need urgent assistance, freeing up the emergency

department for other patients. It will have a 24-hour short stay unit to treat people with mental health or issues with alcohol or other drugs. An official opening of the new entrance is scheduled for this week. The opening of the new entrance means there have been changes to access routes in and around the hospital and emergency department. Focus on mental health Mental health advocate and former Western Bulldogs star Tom Boyd is helping spearhead this year’s Sons of the West program when it kicks off later this month. Since hanging up the boots at the end of the 2019 AFL season, the premiership player has openly discussed his own experience battling mental health. Boyd will join each Sons of the West group for a session dedicated to decreasing stigma and encouraging those who need help to reach out. Boyd said last year’s COVID-19 lockdowns and the continued fallout of the global pandemic mean there has never been a more important time to shine a light on mental health. “If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that things change quickly, and being able to deal with

the stress associated with change is more important than ever,” he said. “With this in mind, a huge priority for all of us moving forward is taking care of our mental health, looking after our physical health and investing in the interpersonal relationships we have in our lives and our communities.” Widely considered to be Australia’s most successful men’s health program, Sons of the West has been delivered annually by the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation since 2014. Police arrested a woman in St Albans following an alleged erratic driving incident through multiple north-western suburbs last Wednesday. Officers were called to a property at Cairnlea Drive, Cairnlea just after 7pm to reports of a woman asleep inside a vehicle. Registration checks on the vehicle confirmed it was stolen from a shopping centre carpark on March 6. Police attempted to intercept the vehicle, however it allegedly drove off at speed. The vehicle was tracked to an address in Marsden Crescent, St Albans where a 51-year-old Moonee Ponds woman was arrested. The woman faces 13 charges including theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop upon police direction and reckless conduct endangering life. Revving up support for raceway By Jessica Micallef A Sunbury resident wants the Calder Park Raceway to be returned to it’s “former glory”. Sarah Allen has started a petition to save the raceway from “sitting abandoned” and “slowly wasting away”. “Every time I drive past the raceway, I feel sad because of how much it has deteriorated,” she said. “I want it to be restored to it’s former glory because the site has a lot of history. When I was a kid, my dad took me there to see races and it’s sad to see where it is now.”

The track has been mostly unused in recent years following a family dispute between former owner Bob Jane and his son Rodney Jane in the early 2010s. In December, tumble weed from the site invaded nearby properties, while a fire in January damaged fences of nearby houses. Ms Allen said the raceway had the potential to hold events that attracted a big audience. “New South Wales has Bathurst, why not have something of similar significance here in Victoria to help boost revenue?” she said. “We would undoubtedly attract a lot of

tourists and help stimulate our economy. “And if the drag strip was open to the public, less people would die on the roads from reckless behaviour.” More than 1000 people have signed Ms Allen’s petition. Brimbank councillors raised concerns about the track and the overall site at a council meeting last month, following concerns from residents. Mayor Ranka Rasic said residents are concerned about the condition of the site and what appears to be a lack of maintenance.

“This includes not only the race track component but also the open paddocks,” she said. The council will write to Calder Park Raceways Pty Ltd as owners of the Calder Park site, outlining concerns about the general condition of the raceway grounds and surrounding land and requesting site and fire management plans. They are also seeking a meeting with owners to discuss the site, the recent serrated tussock seed (tumbleweed) event and recent grassfires. To view the petition: bit.ly/3l4BEEC

Leadership recognised Three Caroline Chisholm Catholic College teachers are leading the way for their peers. The school’s director of professional learning, Monique Dalli, and careers and VET co-ordinator Julie Pilioglou recently became two of the first teachers in Victoria to be nationally certified by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools and authority for Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). Ms Dalli said 60 people started the process for certification, just 12 people finished. “The impact of remote learning and working towards this accreditation was not easy,” she said. “Part of gaining this certification required us to reflect on our teaching journey, analyse our leadership and consider our work output that is part of our day-to-day operations. “We are very honoured to be in the first cohort of nationally certified, highly accomplished and lead teachers.”

For Ms Pilioglou, completing the certificate wasn’t a small task “My youngest child told me whilst I was completing the certification requirements that I was always on the computer,” she said. “When I told him, I was studying after my day at work he was curious to ask me what it was all about. As I told him what I was doing he realised, as did I, that the process required an enormous amount of commitment, dedication, and time but it gave me the opportunity to reflect on my many years of work.” Meanwhile, the school’s head of learning [mathematics] Colin Chapman has been awarded the Adem Foster Award for Leadership in Technologies Education by Design and Technology Teachers Association (DATTA). Cemetery trees cut down By Tara Murray The removal of more than 50 trees at Keilor Cemetery is distressing, according to Keilor Historical Society president Susan Jennison. Mrs Jennison said she was driving past the cemetery when she noticed that a number of trees had been removed, leaving the border of the cemetery looking bare. “They had been there for a long time, going back to the 19th century. It has caused so much distress to see,” she said. “They’ve been destroyed, and how will they be replaced? This has been handled poorly. “We’re also confused as there’s a heritage overlay over the site.” Mrs Jennison said she spoke to the arborist who was conducting the work and was told that

the society and neighbours had been notified that the trees would be removed in January. “To my knowledge, we never received an email about the trees, I would have remembered receiving that,” she said. “We’ve taken a big interest in the Keilor Cemetery and were set to launch a heritage walk up their last year … we didn’t know anything about [the tree removal] it.” The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT), which runs the cemetery, said it was in the process of removing and replacing 56 declining Monterey cypress and eucalyptus trees, primarily located along the Cemetery Road boundary. It applied to Brimbank council for a planning permit for the works, due to the site being under a heritage overlay. This was approved last April.

A GMCT spokesperson said the trees that had been removed had experienced branch failures and structural failures in recent years. All affected trees had been independently assessed as having reached the end of their life span. “GMCT takes the health and safety of all cemetery visitors seriously, and we consider these works essential to safeguarding the health and safety of the communities we serve,” the spokesperson said. “Each tree removed as part of these works will be replaced with native species in accordance with the planning permit issued by Brimbank council.” GMCT says it reached out to 25 businesses in the vicinity of the cemetery, installed about 40 signs to notify visitors to the affected areas, published notices on its website, and emailed

key stakeholder groups, including the Keilor Historical Society. GMCT said once it had become aware of the Keilor Historical Society not receiving the email, their arborist contacted Mrs Jennison. Brimbank council city development director Kelvin Walsh said the permit meant that replacement trees had to be planted in the same location as the previous trees. “Whilst council is very disappointed to see these trees removed, expert arboricultural advice indicated that the trees were in poor condition and had a limited life expectancy. “The replacement trees have been specifically selected as they are known to be tolerant to the local conditions but are also nominated as a suitable species within the Conservation Management Plan for the Keilor Cemetery.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has kept parents out of the classroom for the past 12 months – that changed last week with the school holding a parents meet and greet event. During the event, parents participated in some games, including some that involved getting to know the teachers more. “This is the first [event] for a while where we can have parents at the school and we want to let the community know they are very welcome

Brimbank SES leader hands over reins Outgoing Brimbank SES unit controller Phil Jordan steps away from the role knowing the unit is in a better place than when he took over. Mr Jordan, who has been a member of the unit since it started, became unit controller two years ago after having held the position in the 1990s. Mr Jordan said he was happy to pass the job on to someone else. “I’ve got the unit to where I wanted to get it. I achieved all the goals I wanted to in the last two years,” he said. “The management team will be able to continue the way it has been and it’s in good hands.”

Mr Jordan said some things had changed from the first time he was unit controller. He said the technology had changed and there was a lot more training required of the members. Mr Jordan said the training team had done a really good job over the past 12 months especially, with the COVID-19 pandemic meaning they couldn’t run normal training sessions. “We produced weekly training in some form. We didn’t become disassociated, which was good,” he said. “We still responded to calls and the team was

Clearing out your gutters now could save a whole lot of pain and money down the track, according to the local SES unit. Brimbank SES controller Phil Jordan said gutters full of leaves and rubbish can cause a lot of trouble when heavy rain falls. He said it was important to get the message out that gutters needed to be cleaned to prepare houses for the wet weather. “We do on average 300 calls a year due to storm-related damage and most of them due to flooding,” he said. “We would say 50 per cent of the flooding is caused by roofs and gutters not being cleaned. It’s important to have your gutters cleaned.” Mr Jordan said they were encouraging people to be proactive, with wet weather predicted in the next few weeks. “Lots of calls we get are people getting water through their light fittings, when most of the time the gutters have not been cleaned,” he said. “It saves us from being called out and it cuts down the extra expense as well. So make sure that gutters are cleaned out and not full of rubbish.”

What is your connection to the Hillside community? I have a very strong connection to the west. I was born in the west, I live in the west and have a deep passion, commitment and drive to give back to the west. I have taught in the Hillside community for almost 15 years and that deep connection to the families and the Hillside community is what I missed over the past seven years. So when this opportunity came up, I just had to go for it. I didn’t even have to think about it. What is your teaching background and why did you want to become a teacher? Over the past 21 years, I have dedicated my life to education through various roles such as a classroom teacher, specialist teacher, leading teacher, learning coach, welfare co-ordinator, assistant principal and principal. In each of my roles, I have sought to ensure the success of each student and the school, by providing the best instructional and extracurricular opportunities and support possible. I have worked in several schools over my career. I have taught at Taylors Lakes PS, Sydenham Hillside PS, Dinjerra PS (assistant principal), principal of Epping PS and now principal of Parkwood Green. I am thrilled to bring my skills as an educational leader and work with such an amazing school community equally as a partner to develop future success. What do you love about the local community? The more I work in the Hillside community, the more I love how caring and supportive our community is. I feel a huge sense of community here. The ‘family friendly’ atmosphere in the community and at Parkwood Green is so infectious.

What legacy are you looking to leave at the school in your term as principal? I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich tradition of education. My commitment is to work hard to continue the legacy of success established by past, current and future Parkwood Green staff by building

Connecting through COVID The new National Communications Museum found itself in a unique position last year – a museum thrown into a pandemic with no physical space for exhibitions. Michaela Meade spoke with some of the people involved about how the COVID-19 pandemic informed the inaugural exhibition.

“C

ommunication has never been so important.” That was the biggest take away Jo-Anne Cooper had from the COVID-19 pandemic. It was while working from home, like the rest of Victoria, that the director of the National Communications Museum (NCM) realised what role the new museum could be playing. “I thought, here we are in the middle of the biggest communication story … of the century … and we weren’t doing anything,” Jo-Anne said. That thought sparked the NCM’s inaugural exhibition – Connecting through COVID – available completely online. Jo-Anne said it was important to put 2020’s pandemic in context. “There are these amazing ups and downs, seismic events in world history that former generations have been part of, and now we’re part of one, for better or for worse.” The museum decided to draw comparisons between the COVID-19 and Spanish Flu pandemics. “We’ve done this before, not that long ago,” Jo-Anne said. According to Jo-Anne, people living through the Spanish Flu pandemic didn’t have the ease of communication tools we have today; they had to display a sign of “SOS” in their windows, and hope. “Council officers were employed to patrol the streets [looking for SOS signs]. “You wonder how thorough that could be.” Jo-Anne said we now have the tools to get through the pandemic with more ease. We are able to catch up with family and friends virtually, and call for – and receive – help quickly. Emily Siddons was brought on last year as exhibition and programs manager. “In times of crisis, it is human nature to seek a comparative historical example,” Emily said. “We wanted to provide … a way for audiences to navigate the challenges [and] provide some critical context. “I wanted to use [the pandemic] as an opportunity for our museum to critically think about how we could approach digital engagement and stage digital experiences.” Emily, as a millennial, said she wanted to capture the lived experience of 2020 for future generations in a way not possible during the Spanish Flu. “The changing definitions of privacy, intimacy and community in this time and how we all were propelled into this digital way of living and working [was important to remember]. “Hashtags [for example] … are so representative of our shared experience. “I … tried to identify what [was] going to stand the test of time.” Historian Mary Sheehan aided the exhibition through her role as a doctorate candidate with a broad knowledge of the 1919 Spanish Flu. “The Spanish Flu [has been] largely forgotten,” Mary said. “There’s no proforma and no manual for managing pandemics, but much can be learned from pandemics when they do occur.” Mary pointed out one aspect of people’s responses to pandemics that has not changed in a century. “Some smart people made the comment [in 1919], quite erroneously… that masks were as efficient at keeping out germs as barbed wire fences were at keeping out flies.” Mary said she hoped the exhibition was effective in quelling anxiety in the community. “It’s so informative … And I think that’s a vital thing in times like this where there’s so much uncertainty, and people need some actual facts and information to make them feel more secure.” According to Mary, Australians and the

world should prepare for the long haul. “I think it’s an impact that will resonate for years, if not, forever.” One of the “subjects” of the exhibition is the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s scrub choir. Chief music therapist and creator of scrub choir Dr Emma O’Brien said she had noticed a dramatic increase in the level of stress in her colleagues. After 200 staff wanted to be a part of the initial production of scrub choir, which involved filming themselves at work or at home singing or dancing to a song chosen by Emma, she knew “caring for the carer” was important. “I realised how much staff really needed that time, that sort of permission to have a bit of fun,” Emma said. “The time to have their own music therapy. “It was an opportunity to remind people to

have just a small moment to themselves … and to be a part of something.” Emma said the opportunity to be featured in NCM’s exhibition was fantastic. “I was so honoured … I totally love the exhibition … it makes perfect sense to capture what happened last year. “Scrub choir helped us stay connected when COVID … tried to rip us apart.” Emma offered a final reflection on the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the world will pull through. “The reality is it’s communities that solve pandemics.
